SIDELIGHTS

Cathy Woodman initially found her professional footing as a veterinarian before launching her writing career. Her interests primarily cater to both fields, as she leads courses in the handling of animals and is also affiliated with the Romantic Novelists’ Association. Woodman’s main genre is romance. She has a series of novels based in a small English town inspired by her own childhood home of East Devon. Her work as a vet also influences each of her works.

Springtime at Cherry Tree Cottage

Springtime at Cherry Tree Cottage stars protagonist “Flick,” or Felicity, who is trying to piece her life back together after suffering through total devastation. With virtually no money and no fiance, Flick is forced to work as a horseshoe crafter to try and rebuild her life to some semblance of normalcy. However, she soon meets Robbie Salterton, a professional horse rider and stuntman, and the two develop an instant attraction.

Despite their mutual desire to proceed with the relationship, two things stand in their way. Robbie has a young daughter who views Flick’s presence as a threat, while Flick is still dealing with the emotional fallout of her fiance’s abandonment and isn’t so sure about starting a new romance so soon. The final decision of her fate, and her potential romance with Robbie, lies in her hands. “Fans will rejoice as veterinarian-turned-novelist Woodman continues her Talyton St. George series,” wrote Carol Haggas in an issue of Booklist.

Accidentally in Love

Shannon is the star of Accidentally in Love. As a veterinarian, Shannon is perfect at her job and always able to lead a situation toward a positive outcome. She can’t say the same when Dr. Ross, a new animal surgeon, comes to town to work at their animal hospital. Shannon is ruffled by his arrival. However, the two are able to look past their differences and develop first a friendship, then romantic possibilities. Fate takes a turn for the worse when Shannon falls victim to a horrific accident thanks to Ross’s pet, in turn throwing their relationship into jeopardy.

Booklist contributor Carol Haggas remarked that longtime readers “will enjoy revisiting favorite characters and welcome new charmers into the fold in this winsome, frolicsome tale.” A Publishers Weekly reviewer wrote that the main character’s “angst is balanced by Ross’s nurturing and the love of their furry friends, leading to a sweet finale.”

The Three of Us

The Three of Us: Short Story is a sequel to one of Woodman’s previous novels, and revisits the story of Jack and Tessa, two friends who have become lovers. While the two have always been close, their relationship as a couple is visibly perfect – perhaps even more so once they learn of Tessa’s pregnancy. However, all is not happily ever after. Signs point to future struggle with the pregnancy and their baby, which leaves Jack shaken to the core. While Tessa wants to proceed with the pregnancy, Jack is hesitant and begins pushing away from her. This turn of events leaves Tessa at somewhat of a standstill. She loves and wants to keep her baby, but she doesn’t want to risk Jack leaving her in the process. Together the two of them will have to do what is best for themselves, as well as for their baby, whose arrival is fast approaching.

Only time will tell what Jack’s final decision will be, and what this could possibly mean for himself, Tessa, and their brand new family. With the clock winding down, the two of them must consider their situation and figure out what to do. “I did enjoy this short story and I would recommend you to read this if you are a fan of Cathy Woodman,” commented one reviewer on the Rea’s Book Reviews website.

In the wake of an engagement in which her fiance broke not only her heart but also her finances, Felicity, better known as Flick, hires on as an
itinerant farrier in Talyton St. George, while Mel, the village's regular farrier, recuperates from back surgery. Out for a ride on her beloved horse,
Rafa, Flick falls head-over-heels, quite literally, for Robbie Salterton, an area superstar of sorts, known for his daring stunt work with horses at
shows and in movies. As Flick and Robbie's flirtation escalates, they are nonetheless hampered by Flick's deep-seated mistrust of new
relationships and Robbie's precocious daughter, Maisie, who simultaneously wants a mother, since her own died in childbirth, and chafes at
sharing her father with anyone else. With her finances in ruins and her emotions in tatters, Flick must decide whether she can pursue a career,
follow her heart, or both. Fans will rejoice as veterinarian-turned-novelist Woodman continues her Talyton St. George series (Accidentally in
Love, 2016), creating another set of winning characters to populate her fictional country market town.--Carol Haggas

Accidentally in Love. By Cathy Woodman. Nov. 2016.448p. Pegasus, paper, $15.95 (97816817723871.
A model of efficiency, kindness, and tact, veterinary nurse Shannon has no problem dealing with the rabbits, snakes, cats, and dogs that come to
Devon's Otter House clinic for everything from routine nail trims to emergency surgery. She can even sweet-talk the grouchiest village elder into
doing what's best for his or her beloved pet. But when newly hired Dr. Ross rolls into the village of Talyton St. George on his motorcycle and
swaps his leathers for surgical scrubs, Shannon is less-than-thrilled to work with this hot-shot upstart, no matter how good-looking he is. Their
working relationship gets off to a rocky start but quickly evolves into an abiding friendship and an even more promising romantic liaison. When a
freak accident caused by Ross' beloved dog, Bart, disfigures Shannon for life, she doubts the sincerity of Ross' true feelings for her. Fans of
Woodman's English country vet series, including Vets in Love (2012), will enjoy revisiting favorite characters and welcome new charmers into
the fold in this winsome, frolicsome tale.--Carol Haggas

Accidentally in Love
Cathy Woodman. Pegasus, $15.95 trade paper (448p) ISBN 978-1-68177-238-7
Woodman's leisurely latest Talyton St. George contemporary (after Follow Me Home), set in a fictional town in Devon, England, highlights the
charm and romance of a small country village. Shannon is working as a veterinary nurse at Otter House, a practice that sees just about every type
of animal from rabbits to large dogs. When she meets the new vet, Ross, their personalities clash at first, but their chemistry is intense, and soon
they become friends. Shannon and Ross both need new places to live, so they decide to move in together; when Shannon feels jealous over his
ex-girlfriend, she realizes she might be hoping for the friendship to turn into romance. Woodman's expertise as a veterinarian imbues the novel
with a sense of realism. Though the story gets off to a somewhat slow start, it gains momentum when the relationship between Ross and Shannon
heats up, especially after they struggle with emotional attachments to the patients they treat and Shannon suffers a disfiguring accident. Her angst
is balanced by Ross's nurturing and the love of their furry friends, leading to a sweet finale. (Nov.)

August sees the p/b launch for Headline's literary list Tinder about which I am most excited. Three titles launch, Maggie O'Farrell and two
wonderful debuts, the first-timers coming just three months after their hardbacks, a move I favour. Del Rey, Ebury's new SF and fantasy imprint,
also launches into p/b with an impressive young British debut author, Liesel Schwarz.
Now a book missed from July. Sadly some hitch made it late else I would have read it, but I think it needs mentioning: viz Kate Forsyth's Bitter
Greens (Allison & Busby, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 29th July, 9780749013233). It mixes history and fairytale in the retelling of Rapunzel through
three Renaissance women. It and her next proof arrived on my desk bound by a black ribbon encasing the two between glorious bookends
designed by Heather Alstead. Quite the most attractive piece of marketing I've seen for a long time. Bravo A&B.
Now for an apology and correction. I have been bemoaning sloppy editing recently and noticed one in my column! One little changed word and
the whole meaning is altered. I refer to Bonnie Nadzam's Lamb (July) where the copy read "she runs away from ..." and should have read "she
runs away with"! Sorry, (for it was I who read the book and do know exactly what it was all about).
BOOK OF THE MONTH

Saskia Sarginson
The Twins
Piatkus, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 29th, 9780749958695
A perfect R&J summer read, a psychological thriller of sisters and a dreadful childhood incident, the details of which are drip fed to us
throughout the book, building layers of complexity to the story at each revelation. We get happy rural childhood memories contrasting with one
twin severely anorexic and hospitalised, the other recently redundant and digging up the past. An unstable mother, boys from the "bad" family
and an unwelcome possible step-family, the tragic incident could be any of a fistful of problems. Highly compulsive, it is Piatkus' super lead of
the year, the one it really gets behind.

Black Swan, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 15th, 9780552775311
Say Ben Elton and inevitably humour springs to mind but there is little humour here. This is dark, frightening, powerful stuff full of terror,
prejudice and fear. Set in Nazi Germany from 1920-1945, centring on twins in love with the same Jewish girl, it is probably his best book.

Very untypical for the author, rather as Tulip Fever was for Debbie Moggach, so certainly able to pull in a new audience. This is the life of a
companion, Nellie, to Princess Sophie, daughter of George III. Spanning some 60 years of eventful court life and secrets and Nellie's fairly
unremarkable and not unhappy life, this is a fascinating portrait of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a long read but a good one. Just don't
recommend it as a new Laurie Graham! Devoted fans may be disappointed.

Alex
Maclehose Press, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 1st, 9781782060796
This is the book of which Quercus gave away 1,000 copies! Interestingly my female blood-and-guts reader couldn't stomach it; my male foreign
crime reader couldn't rate it highly enough. It is split into three parts and your perception changes as you progress. It's grim, disturbing, full of
twists and where most authors might have finished it, Lemaitre takes us at breakneck speed through a web of ambiguity and morally challenging
episodes to a surprising and wonderfully plotted conclusion. First rate.

Tinnder Press, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 29th, 9780755394388
One of Tinder's launch titles coming three months after the hb. It is a riveting read, a mother and her two daughters are on the run from their
religious cult where she was one of 50 wives. The girls know no other life. Fluctuating back and forth in time we learn of their past and how
struggle with their new life. The conclusion is terrifying stuff. Highly recommended.
Brian Kimberling
Snapper
Tinder Press, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 15th, 9780755396214
The third of the Tinder titles and strangely my favourite. It's small town Indiana, full of oddballs, prejudice and poverty with some truly lovely
anecdotes, rather Lake Wooegon-esque. It is about orienting (fascinating) and love and belonging. A delight.
Liane Moriarty
The Husband's Secret
Penguin, Original, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 29th, 9781405911665
The letter Cecilia came across was to be opened after her husband's death, she couldn't resist it...its startling content really does change a lot of
people's lives. This is very clever, described by my reader as "one of the best books I have read in the last year"! Penguin is hoping to make it as
successful as it did Jojo Moyes' Me Before You. It is certainly unexpected in its twist.
Mary Simses
The Irrestistible Blueberry Bakeshop and Cafe
Review, 6.99 [pounds sterling], 15th, 9781472203878
An addictive love story of tracing a grandmother's past, fulfilling her dying wish and finding your future. It's American, pretty predictable,
Headline's summer debut and beautifully packaged for this area.

His fourth but Penguin is giving it a big spend, deservedly so, it's terrific. Starring one David Raker (they all do), a missing persons' investigator,
and with a huge body count (12), it is impossible to put down. Harking back to the Second World War and revolving round a mysterious
photograph, it's fantastic. Penguin aims to raise awareness of the series, reissuing the backlist simultaneously.
Luke Delaney
Cold Killing
Harper, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 29th, 9780007486083
This debut comes highly recommended by a reader. It's scarily realistic and very unsettling with twists that turn unexpectedly, keeping your
stomach in knots. It is serial killer stuff with a cat-and-mouse thriller edge, a killer who is forensically aware and very clever set against a
damaged DI Sean Corrigan who has an uncanny ability to identify darkness in others.
Dick Wolf
The Intercept
Sphere, Original, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 25th, 9780751551136
A fast, gripping debut on which Sphere is most keen. It stars NTPD Special Agent Jeremy Fisk, very formulaic according to a different reader but
good escapist stuff involving terrorists, a clever decoy and the inevitable last-minute saving from huge disaster.
Daniel O'Malley
The Rook
Head of Zeus, 7.99 [pounds sterling], 1st, 9781908800985
The beginning of a series, The Checquy Files, the Rook name comes from chess and depicts a high-ranking member of a supernatural force

When I started work at The Bookseller as a reporter many moons ago, I used to gaze with secret, burning envy at Benedicte page and Sarah
Broadhurst, who were surrounded with delicious, desirable books. I can't quite believe I'm now writing my first paperback preview. I have
thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with April's titles; I'm also entirely overwhelmed with the brilliance and sheer amount that you all do. Kudos.
So I couldn't cram nearly as much as I wanted into my personal picks. I would have loved to find room for Lisa Jewell's latest, which had me
avoiding family over Christmas to finish it; Kadian's Journal, meanwhile, made me cry. I'd also like to highlight the launch of Faber's new
Modern Classics list, which uses a 25-year rule to ensure that "these are books that have stood the test of time". Ranging from Ariel to Pincher
Martin, the range has a striking look, almost French in its eye-catching simplicity.
But I want this preview to be useful. I want to know what you want to know. So email me (paperbackpreview@gmail.com) or tweet me
(@alisonflood), tell me what you would like to see here. Just don't send me anything by post, because I live in Norway (random, I know). Bring
on May!

Coutts describes the 18 months between learning of her husband Tom Lubbock's brain tumour, and his death. "The news falls neatly between one
moment and another. You would not think there was a gap for such a thing. You would not think there was room." They have a small son. It is
heartbreaking. "Time hasn't stopped even now. But it spools new. I can feel it--not faster, not slower but with an undertone, a tiny subjective
pulse." Coutts' writing is raw, honest, hard to look straight at. Extraordinary.

SAPIENS

I liked this so much that I gave it to my brother for Christmas. Harari takes on no lesser subject than the history of humankind, looking at how
homo sapiens came out on top when 10,000 years ago there were at least six human species on earth. Were we happier in the Stone age? Why did
we start believing in gods? What did the development of language do for us? a mind-broadening and thoroughly engaging slice of non-fiction.

The Dylan Thomas prize-winner's second novel is just glorious. The Times called it "the first ballet novel for grown-ups"; it's the story of New
York ballet dancer Joan Joyce and the affair she had with a Russian ballet star, Arslan Rusakov, which will echo through the life she ends up
living far from the stage, with the boy who has loved her since she was a child. Shipstead, one of Zadie Smith's first students, draws her readers--
including me, a total ballet philistine--effortlessly and entirely into the world of dance. Magnetic stuff.

TANA FRENCH
THE SECRET PLACE
HODDER, 9TH, 6.99 [pounds sterling], 9781444755619
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
I have loved Tana French's writing ever since I picked up a proof of her debut, In the Woods, back when I worked as a reporter at The Bookseller.
Her subsequent thrillers have all been wonderful; The Secret Place is something else altogether. I think it was one of the best books of 2014
across all genres, not just thrillers.
The novel is set in an exclusive boarding school, as Detective Stephen Moran and his new partner attempt to breach the girls' walls of secrecy to
find out who murdered a boy from the neighbouring school a year ago.
"Posh girls' school: lovely and safe, I'd've thought ... But I was starting to see it, out of the corner of my eye: the shimmer in the air that says
danger." The case went cold with no leads, but a photo of the boy has come to light, with a caption reading: "I know who killed him."
A fantastic thriller, with layers and layers of lies and secrets to be peeled away, The Secret Place is also one of the best reminders I've read of
teenage girldom. Hodder has totally changed the look for the paperback (it's great) and has "a big and very innovative marketing campaign"
planned.
It should be, and deserves to be, huge.

This winner of the Crime Writers' Association's New Blood Dagger, based on the true story of a serial killer in New Orleans just after the First

Heady with jazz--the killer, known as the Axeman, even warns the city that he'll spare those "in whose home a jazz band is in full swing"--it puts
three people on the Axeman's trail: a detective with secrets of his own; his former mentor, now working with the Mafia again; and Ida, a secretary

The Irish Book Awards' Book of the Year, this is a haunting, unforgettable first novel. In elegant prose, Costello tells of Tess Lohan, from a
childhood ruptured by the death of her mother in west Ireland, to New York. An intriguing and moving heroine, Tess inhabits the edges of even
her own life when she falls pregnant, and Costello tells us: "Never in her life had she had one iota of courage. She had sought, always, silent
consent for everything she had done--as if she were without volition." Short, but perfectly formed.

You are unlikely to read anything quite like this novel this year. Elmear McBride, no stranger to experimental fiction, called it "brutal and
wonderful"; it opens as 13-year-old Nikki's mother falls off a cliff, and is swiftly followed by the teenager having sex with her late mother's
boyfriend. "Nikki is all to hell," writes Morris, aptly, as she begins her story of extreme poverty, drugs, prostitution and growing up all too
quickly. Stark but stunning, I've found it has lingered for weeks.

The Three Of Us by Cathy Woodman

Tessa and Jack live at the animal sanctuary in Talyton St George. They had been friends for years, but it wasn't until Jack interrupted Tessa's wedding that she discovered his feelings for her were stronger than she ever knew.

Now, a year on, they could not be happier. And when Tessa discovers she's pregnant, it's as if all their dreams have come true. But a scan shows that there are complications, and suddenly Tessa realises that Jack has always had doubts about having a baby. Supported throughout by Zara, the village midwife, Tessa and Jack have some tough decisions to make.

However, as the baby's birth draws closer, Tessa and Jack grow further apart. Will he feel differently when the baby is born? Or will having her wonderful child mean losing the man of her dreams?

I have been looking forward to Cathy Woodman’s up and coming release Follow Me Home, and as I was browsing through Netgalley I came across a short story by the author about a few of the characters that are going to be in the new book so I didn’t hesitate in downloading it to give me a little fix until the new book is released.

I have to admit I am not a big fan of short stories as they usually always leave me on a cliff hanger or feeling ripped off because of the price of a book that you finish in five minutes but for me The Three of us was a great read that gave us a bit of background on some of the characters who are going to be in the new book. It was quite an emotional storyline in truth and I found myself taking a dislike to Jack in this book because of his way of handling the situation it really made me feel for Tessa. It was great to catch up with Tessa and Jack who we met in The Village Vet, and it was also nice to be introduced to our new character Zara who will be the lead character in Follow Me Home.

It looks as though we can look forward to seeing another path to the authors writing, whilst animals are still involved in the storyline it seems to me that judging by this short story the new book will be about babies and pregnancy and I am looking forward to seeing what the author has in store for us this time.

I did enjoy this short story and I would recommend you to read this if you are a fan of Cathy Woodman, I don’t see that you need to read this one in order to enjoy the new release but it is a great little fix, my only downside is I still feel it is overpriced for a short story as personally I wouldn’t pay more than 99p for a short story.
