WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Julie Ann Walker writes novels that combine romance with action, pairing tough, heroic men with equally tough, heroic women. Her “Black Knights, Inc.” series follows the adventures of bikers who double as government agents, operating out of a motorcycle shop. The “Deep Six” series is about a group of former Navy SEALs who are in the business of salvaging valuables from sunken ships, but often find themselves involved in espionage-related missions.
Hell on Wheels
Hell on Wheels inaugurates the “Black Knights, Inc.” series. The members of the Black Knights are former special-operations military men, using their high-end bike shop as cover as they save America and the world from various enemies. One of the Knights, Grigg Morgan, is killed in such an effort, and his sister, Ali, finds that she is in danger from a corrupt senator she is trying to expose; she has just barely eluded a kidnapper. She seeks help from Grigg’s friend Nate Weller, a fellow Black Knight, who has been attracted to Ali for years. He fears she will hate him if she learns how her brother died, so he fights his feelings while doing his best to protect her.
Several critics thought Hell on Wheels a top-notch romantic suspense novel. “The duo’s chemistry sizzles,” Spencer A. Freeman wrote of Nate and Ali in a piece posted online at RT Book Reviews, adding: “The dialogue is as snappy as it is convincing.” A Publishers Weekly contributor called the book “riveting” and a “first-rate thrill ride.”
In Rides Trouble
In Rides Trouble focuses on a different pair. Becky Reichert is the owner of the motorcycle shop the Black Knights use as their front. A tough, independent woman, she longs to go on some of the Knights’ missions, but the group’s leader, Frank “Boss” Knight, will not permit it. He feels extremely protective toward Becky, partly because he harbors romantic feelings for her. He has never acted on those feelings, though, and he believes they are unrequited—for one thing he is thirteen years older than Becky, which he thinks means she could not be interested in him. Becky actually is attracted to Frank, and their relationship develops amid a crisis. Becky and a friend are kidnapped by pirates while vacationing in the Seychelles Islands, and Frank must organize a rescue effort. In the course of the action, Becky has a chance to prove herself.
This novel received critical praise as well. “Walker has knocked it out of the park once again,” remarked Freeman, again writing online at RT Book Reviews. He had positive words for the characters, their chemistry, and the suspenseful story. A Publishers Weekly commentator termed In Rides Trouble a “superlative second installment” in the series, featuring “deft characterization, skillful pacing, touches of humor, and red-hot love scenes.”
Too Hard to Handle
A later entry in the “Black Knights, Inc.” series, Too Hard to Handle finds the group in Peru, trying to capture traitorous American spy Luke Winterfield. Former Secret Service agent Penni DePaul has come to Peru, too, as she is interested in Dan “The Man” Currington, a Knight she met when they were on assignment in Malaysia. She also wants to apprehend Luke, as his betrayal resulted in the deaths of several of her associates. She joins the Knights in their pursuit of the traitor, while pursuing Dan’s heart at the same time.
Several commentators again commended Walker’s work. Too Hard to Handle “combines a heart-racing thriller with a gripping romance” and, with its unexpected plot twists, “is a nail-biter from start to finish,” observed a Publishers Weekly critic. At the RT Book Reviews site, Freeman summed up the novel as “another exhilarating, not-to-be-missed addition to the bestselling series.”
Hell or High Water
Hell or High Water begins the “Deep Six” series. The six Navy SEALS turned salvagers are planning to retrieve treasure from the Santa Cristina, a ship that sunk in 1624 off the coast of Florida. The mission changes, however, when one member of the crew, Leo Anderson, gets a request from federal agent Olivia Mortier. She needs help in finding chemical weapons that were lost at sea by bumbling terrorists. She and Leo have worked together previously, and he has been unable to forget her. Their attraction intensifies amid the dangers they face.
Several reviewers considered this a promising series opener. Walker offers a mix of “well-plotted adventure,” “tender romance,” and “lusty sex scenes,” noted a Publishers Weekly contributor. An online critic at the Good, the Bad, and the Unread found the author “has a mean pen when it comes to action scenes,” but thought she took too long to get Leo and Olivia together. The critic still dubbed the novel “a really good read,” due to its “action, suspense, and camaraderie.” Freeman, once more writing at the RT Book Reviews Web site, added that, judging from Hell or High Water, the series “is going to be one exhilarating ride.”
Devil and the Deep
This entry has the Deep Six team still pursuing the Santa Cristina‘s treasure but interrupted again. Team member Brando Pallidino hears from Madison “Maddy” Powers, an heiress he recently saved from kidnappers; she wants him to visit her when she takes some teenagers on a camping trip in the Dry Tortugas. He reluctantly agrees to go, accompanied by fellow crew member Mason McCarthy and historian Alexandra Merriweather. Even though Bran is attracted to Maddy, he has reservations about getting involved with anyone. Growing up, he saw his father abuse his mother, physically and emotionally, and he is afraid he may repeat this pattern in relationships. As he and Maddy try to sort out their feelings, he is called on to rescue her once again. The story takes place over just twenty-four hours and is told from various characters’ viewpoints.
This novel found favor with several critics. It offers “don’t-stop, read-faster action-packed scenes that rev up all the senses and bring tears at times,” reported a contributor to the Long and Short Reviews Web site, while Bran and Maddy’s relationship is “fun, a touch raunchy, and always shimmering with love.” Another online commentator, at Scandalicious, called Devil and the Deep “an expertly written romantic suspense novel” with an imaginative premise, appealing characters, and “snappy and clever” dialogue. A Publishers Weekly reviewer praised the “emotional complexity”of Bran and the way Walker “seamlessly” shifts points of view, summing up the novel as “gripping.”

Biography
A little about Julie…
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Julie grew up in a house full of women – she has three older sisters. As you can imagine, there was no lack of drama… or romance. Her mother enrolled her in a book club as soon as she began to read and it was the small spark that ignited her voracious appetite for the written word. Because of Julie’s early immersion in literature, she found writing came quite naturally. In high school, she won multiple writing contests and was the proud senior editor of The Tiger’s Tale – her school newspaper. During her college years, however, she longed for a challenge. “Reading and writing felt like second nature to me, so I looked for a way to flex my mental muscles,” she recalls. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree, Julie began teaching advanced high school mathematics. “I loved working with the students and facing the challenges of the classroom, but I longed for the occasional snow day when I could race to the local book store, buy two or three new novels, and curl up in front of the fire to read.” It wasn’t until a fortuitous move to Chicago that Julie once more returned to her first passion. “Thankfully, my husband – my own personal hero – encouraged my decision to write full time.” Now Julie lives on beautiful Lake Shore Drive with a view that sometimes competes with her deadlines. When she’s not writing, she enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, cooking, travel, and…reading, of course!
Julie Ann Walker is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of award-winning romantic suspense. Her books have been described as "alpha, edgy, and downright hot." Most days you can find Julie on her bicycle along the lake shore in Chicago or blasting away at her keyboard, trying to wrangle her capricious imagination into submission.

In Walker’s gripping second Deep Six contemporary romantic thriller, six former Navy SEALs continue their search for the sunken treasure ship Santa Cristina off the waters of Wayfarer Island, located between Cuba and Key West. Handsome Brando Pallidino has carried on a long-distance friendship with oil heiress Madison Powers since the team rescued her from a hijacking three months earlier. Now she’s taking three teenage scholarship students to the Dry Tortugas on a camping trip and asks Bran whether he can visit them there. Mason McCarthy, a partner in the salvage operation, and historian Alexandra Merriweather sail with Bran to see Maddy, but stumble upon her kidnapping in progress. Obstacles multiply in a thriller that takes place in roughly 24 hours, with each chapter heading giving the exact time, allowing Walker (Hell or High Water) to move seamlessly to different characters’ points of view. Bran struggles to come to terms with his troubled family history, and his emotional complexity lends an intimate feel to the steamy sex scenes. (July)

Returning with the second installment in the Deep Six series, Julie Ann Walker thrills and excites with DEVIL AND THE DEEP. Possibly one of the more interesting Romantic Suspense I've read, Walker follows Bran Palladino as he undergoes a rescue mission to retrieve the one woman he can't seem to forget.
Maddy Powers' life is filled with charity events and fundraisers but since that moment Bran and her shared a kiss, her life has gotten so much more complicated. Although you can read this book as a standalone, I would highly suggest reading the first book in the series. There we get a little bit more about Bran and Maddy, plus readers will become more acquainted with the legend of Santa Cristina to create a fuller reading experience.
DEVIL AND THE DEEP read like a movie. If you're a fan of action comedy films, then I think you will absolutely love Walker's writing style. She combines the high-octane suspense with a heady dose of her trademark humor. The jokes and the non-stop bantering happen throughout the novel and for me, it is both the greatest strength and weakness of the book. The lightheartness of the book is what sets Walker's books apart from others in the genre. But I will also say that it works as a double-edged sword because too much of it can affect the pacing as well. So while I do think it is an essential part to Walker's writing, there were some moments where I think it became too much.
Nevertheless, the entire premise of this series is unlike anything I've encountered in Romantic Suspense and for that reason alone, I think you should give this series a shot. DEVIL AND THE DEEP will certainly have readers panting for more!

DEVIL AND THE DEEP is an enjoyable book! It caught me off guard (probably because I read some reviews before I started it…shame on me!) Set in the Florida Keys and the Gulf of Mexico, it is about an ex Navy Seal team on a treasure hunt. Come on…hot Navy SEALS, lost treasure…where can you go wrong? When I opened the book, the prologue threw me…I thought I picked up the wrong book. It sets up the lost treasure back in the 1600s. No joke, I flipped the book back to the cover to make sure I was reading the correct book. When the story picks up at Chapter 1, we meet Maddy and Bran in current day. Now, Maddy and Bran know each other. He previously saved her from a hostage situation, and since this is book 2, I’m assuming it was all the way back in book 1 of the Deep Six series. But no worries, I picked up the story fine so I didn’t find it completely necessary to have read book one of the series. Maddy and Bran kept in touch through some emails and phone calls. He helped her through some PTSD that she was suffering because of the kidnapping. And they became friends, the kind of friends that want to see each other naked. When she takes some teenagers on a camping trip to a nearby island, she invites him for a visit. Little did they know she was about to be kidnapped…again. And this is how they reconnect.
The suspense in the story is very good. There were a quite few scenes that had my heart beating. The chemistry between the characters is very good. The dialogue is snappy and clever. Maddy is a hoot! She is a Texan with a sharp tongue and she talks…a lot. And there is no lull in the story; it is told over the course of a day but of course no worries needed, they were able to squeeze in the sexy times. This is an expertly written romantic suspense novel, well done to Julie Ann Walker. The action and suspense are top notch. The storyline has imagination (hello, lost treasure!) and mixed with current events in today’s news, I found it believable and easy to follow. I look forward to future stories in the series and I can’t wait to see if they find the treasure. And with Navy SEALS on the hunt, along with the brains, beauty and bravery of the ladies they pick up along the way, I’m thinking you cannot go wrong.

Contemporary Romantic Suspense published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 05 Jul 16
The premise of this series is very appealing: former comrades-in-arms retire from the military, but instead of working in security or any form of covert ops, they form a deep-sea-salvage company with the aim of finding one particular treasure. Along with the main story, we also get to see snippets of how the ship carrying that treasure came to be sunk and why the treasure has remained lost for so long. Of course, with this series occupying the same political setting as Walker’s Black Knights series, our heroes’ retirement is never going to be as uneventful as they think they want, particularly given some of the women whose paths cross theirs.
Maddy Powers met the guys from Deep Six Salvage once before, when her yacht was hijacked by terrorists. She’s tried to put the incident out of her mind, but has kept in touch with one of her rescuers: Bran Pallidino, with whom she shared a kiss; however, their relationship is now strictly a platonic one, much to Maddy’s frustration.
Bran is attracted to Maddy, but grew up in a household dominated by his abusive father and is traumatised from seeing the physical and emotional damage done to his mother by the man she claimed to love. As a result, Bran is wary of the irrational decisions love causes people to make and is convinced that his occasional bouts of temper are a prelude to his becoming just like his father, should he ever enter into any kind of committed romantic relationship. When Maddy emails Bran to tell him she’s taking three scholarship students on a camping trip to an island not far from the Deep Six base, Bran tries to find excuses not to visit; however, the fates and his colleagues are conspiring against him and he ends up making the trip anyway.
Meanwhile, Maddy and her three students have introduced themselves to the island’s only semi-permanent resident, a park ranger named Rick, and are planning where to set up camp when a group of gunmen attack and take them all hostage. While this is a remarkably similar scenario to that in which Maddy and Bran met, the politics and motivations of the group behind the kidnap are very different to that of the previous organisation, and Maddy has learned a lot about herself since then. She also has an idea that Bran is on his way, and so fights doubly hard to escape in order to help rescue the others later.
I like the way Bran and his colleagues couldn’t have attempted the rescue without Maddy’s extensive knowledge of the island’s main buildings – gained during her pre-trip research – and that Maddy is very insistent on helping them, as is Alex – the third member of the Deep Six party, and another woman engaged in a slightly confusing-to-her friendship-cum-potential-relationship with one of the Deep Six guys. I hope we get to see the conclusion of that one soon, as Alex came across as an even more multi-layered heroine than Maddy.
All in all, a strong addition to the series, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the Deep Six guys and gals, as well as learning more historical details about the elusive treasure they’re searching for.

Cocktail parties, political fundraisers, and charity events are Maddy Powers’ way of life. But the daring man who appropriated her father’s yacht a couple of months ago is still out there, somewhere, and she wants to pay him back for the scorching kiss they shared.
Behind his suave smile and ladykiller eyes, Bran Palladino carries a dark secret that keeps him from pursuing Maddy… even though he can’t get her out of his head. But when Maddy is kidnapped as part of a grand scheme, it’s time to put up or shut up… because Bran can’t live without Maddy now.
Julie Ann Walker and her SEALs serve up spicy fare flavored with spark-flying sex and gunfire danger. The humor, euphemisms, dark secrets, and most of all the love that refuses to be denied make Devil and the Deep an exciting, spellbinding story.
Bran Pallidino, while no longer in the military, is still a SEAL from the core out when danger threatens. The “monster” inside him roars to life, eclipsing all his charm, wit, and swagger. Because he fears the “monster” inside himself, he states firmly he does NOT do relationships.
Madison (Maddy) Powers, the little Texas-tornado-of-a-blond, whom Bran rescued earlier from terrorist on her father’s yacht, is ever on his mind. The one kiss they shared left him reeling. Their emailing and talking on the phone afterward, as Bran helps her through the PTSD she suffers, keeps his libido in an uproar.
Maddy sets her mind to see him again. With four older brothers, she is no shrinking violet when it comes to dealing with macho men. She gives tit-for-tat. Fun, a touch raunchy, and always shimmering with love, Maddy and Bran’s journey into total commitment makes heart-melting reading.
Then there’s “motor-mouth” Alexandra (Alex) Merriweather, red-hair, green eyes, and smart. She spends considerable time harassing the big, tough SEALs she works with and has the courage to tell Bran that “..it’s the love we withhold we regret the most.” However, she particularly likes to bedevil the taciturn Mason McCarthy. He claims she drives him crazy, but he’s aware of where she is always.
The heart-in-throat battles to keep Maddy from being kidnapped and held for ransom are don’t-stop, read-faster action-packed scenes that rev up all the senses and bring tears at times.
Devil and the Deep has its share of vulgar language and some very adult scenes, but it entertains from start to finish.
My goodness, I wanted to tell the Deep Six Salvage Company crew where to look for the treasure from the Santa Christiana. From the foreshadowing in the Prologue and the Epilogue, I just know they’re looking in the wrong place. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series to see if I’m right.

The title for this novella is so apt! Michael is SO hot! The chemistry between Michael and Harper is explosive! From the first page, this story is full throttle excitement, danger and suspense. You don’t know what’s going to happen!
I was glued to my Kindle screen until the very last word! Bombings, attacks, hostage situations, and smack dab in the middle of it all is the blistering passionate explosion that is Michael and Harper. While all this craziness was going on, the dialogue was upbeat and so funny. I laughed constantly! The only problem, it was WAY too short!
This is an amazing start to what will hopefully be an action-packed, laugh-out-loud fiery hot series!

Thoughts on Hot as Hell: This is a short little introductory story that lets us get to meet some of the SEALs who would go on to treasure hunt and do other fun things later on. As it turns out, Michael isn't one of those planning on joining his treasure hunting brothers. Which really has no bearing on this story since there's no treasure hunting involved.
Unless you count the treasure in their pants. *snickers at myself*
Anywho. There's nothing better than locking two people with chemistry and some unresolved relationship issues in a room together while danger lurks outside. THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU DO THAT. Sexy things. As they should.
Short, but enjoyable. I kinda dig how whole-heartedly these SEALs throw themselves into relationships. *thumbs up*

Romantic Suspense published by Sourcebooks Casablanca 7 Jul 15
I’m sorry to say that Julie Ann Walker’s Black Knights Inc. series was one I enjoyed, but was also one that suffered when life got busy for me. I just didn’t keep up with it, unfortunately. I’m hoping to avoid that with her new Deep Six series. Not only does it feature former SEALs, but if the rest of the books follow in the same steps as this one, the action and romance will be taking place somewhere in the deep waters of our oceans. I love military heroes and I love the water, so it seems as though this series might be made just for me!
I like the way this book begins, with what happened to the La Santa Christina, a ship and its treasure from hundreds of years in the past, both lost in a storm. Then we meet Leo and Olivia. Leo and his men are in the midst of planning a salvage mission to hunt for the treasure. Before they can actually get started, however, the one woman Leo can’t get out of his head shows up with a problem, one that pulls them back into the action they left behind.
Olivia and her boss at the FBI have had a mission go awry on them, a chemical weapon in enemy hands, and she needs Leo to get it back. They both keep remembering their last moments together more than a year before and have convinced themselves it’s better that nothing more happened between them. Now it’s a test of their mettle to keep feelings and emotions and hands in check, because their old team is back in the saddle and headed to a showdown with an unexpected enemy.
Ms. Walker has a mean pen when it comes to action scenes. Those tense and suspenseful scenes on the yacht in the middle of the ocean are some of the best I’ve read in a very long time. Even though you know our guys aren’t going to end up on the wrong end of a bullet, there’s moments when you’re really not sure. Their SEAL training is still very much a part of them, and I could just see them seamlessly moving through the water for their next take-down. I also enjoyed the usual banter and teasing between these men who consider each of them his brother. It’s all in fun, but when the business gets rough, they have one another’s backs, no questions asked.
The one issue I have with the story is actually the romance. I know it’s the norm anymore to build the tension between the hero and heroine, work them up to fever pitch but actually get them into bed much later in the book. Don’t know if I’m just tired of the same old thing or what, but since these two had a little bit of a history, I’d like to have seen them get between the sheets earlier than what actually happens. And I would have preferred a different spot than where they end up. All I could think was cramped quarters and very uncomfortable. That all bothers me because I really like both of these characters a lot. Something more fierce and edgy would have been welcome, especially after what they’d just been through.
Despite that, though, this is a really good read – the action, suspense, and camaraderie scene stealers every time.

Review: Hell on Wheels by Julie Ann Walker
August 30, 2012
Hell On Wheels Julie Ann WalkerBlack Knights Inc.—Behind the facade of their tricked–out motorcycle shop is an elite special ops team assigned the jobs too hot for anyone else to handle.
Hold On Tight…
Ex–Marine Nate “Ghost” Weller is an expert at keeping his cool—and his distance—which makes him one hell of a sniper. It’s also how he keeps his feelings for Ali Morgan in check. Sweet, sexy Ali has always revved his engine, but she’s his best friend’s baby sister…and totally off limits.
Rough Road Ahead
Ali’s never seen anything sexier than Nate Weller straddling his custom Harley—or the flash of danger in his eyes when she tells him she’s in trouble. First something happened to her brother, and now she’s become the target of a nasty international organization. With Nate, her life is in the most capable hands possible—but her heart is another story altogether.
Quick Rundown: Ex-marine Nate Weller is haunted by the recent death of his best friend, Grigg Morgan. Friends since high school, Nate fell in lust with Grigg’s sister, Aly when she was seventeen but never acted on his feelings due to Grigg’s initial brotherly warning. Years have passed since their spark ignited but Nate refuses to give in to his feelings, fearing that if Aly learns the truth about her brother’s death, she would never forgive him. Now, Aly is in serious trouble due to her brother’s secretive past and she knows Nate is the only person she can turn to for help and protection. Once they are forced to work and live together at the Black Knights compound, both are frustratingly aware their attraction for each other has not diminished, which leaves the question of who will give in first?
First Impression: I was totally on board for ex-military, bad boy bikers. Hell on Wheels has an enjoyable concept with fast pacing, an executable set up and a tight knit cast of characters. However, it lacked something that would have catapulted it from enjoyable to fabulous.
The Hero: A man of few words, Nate Weller is the stoic, brooding alpha male you just want to make squirm. I felt like the whole time reading his edgy demeanor and sexual frustration, that he was a man Aly needed to tie to the bed post and just have her wicked way. Nate has formed a wall between himself and Aly to block his lust for a woman he believes he is not worthy to obtain. He is determined to do his job and not let his emotions or desire get in the way.
“He was too solemn, too remote, too…something. She could never determine just exactly what that something was—which was extremely irksome.”
The Heroine: Although we learn Aly Morgan is a kindergarten teacher, her demeanor is far from the calm and composed stereotypical professional. After being stalked and mugged, she is smart enough to know she is in over her head and needs Nate’s help, yet her spastic nature bordered on over the top and her maturity level was in question many times. I found myself wanting to smack her on several occasions. On one hand she was mature in all of the craziness she faced ie: her brother’s death, being mugged, stalked, etc. Yet, on the other hand she was very immature in coping with her feelings for Nate. Her excessive use of “h-e-double hockeysticks” and “crimeny” was annoying as well as her habit of puking in a crisis.
“He never talked, instead remaining constantly and aggravatingly aloof, which was a state so totally foreign to her that she, in turn, started jabbering like her mouth was attached to a motor.”
What worked: Ms. Walker laid a foundation of well developed characters and their history. The concept of the Black Knights and their mission is intriguing and action packed. I immediately felt a bond and unity of the characters and the fact that they had each other’s backs, both physically and emotionally. The secondary characters play a prominent role and get plenty of page time within the story of Aly and Nate. The author clearly sets up the main couple for the second book and I was actually more engaged with Becky and Frank’s story, than Aly and Nate’s.
What didn’t work: The abrupt scene changes. There were several secondary stories being told as well as sudden jumps into a new scene which was frustrating and confusing. I found myself re-reading the start of a scene to grasp who and where the book was at. Also, the angst and sexual tension of the main couple lacked luster when reading their internal dialogue as well as witnessing their constant denial of feelings toward each other. There is a silly, lighthearted tone throughout the book that was not bad but not what I expected either. That being said, when I finished the book my feelings were more of a cute, fluffy exaggerated read as opposed to an emotional, suspenseful, realistic setting.
Final Conclusion: The ending of the story felt very cliché and an easy wrap up. Hell on Wheels was a nice debut novel and I hope the series improves with each book.

REVIEW: In Rides Trouble by Julie Ann Walker
JaneB- REVIEWSContemporary / friends-to-lovers / law-enforcement / paramilitary / romantic-suspense / unrequited-love7 Comments
Dear Ms. Walker:
This book came to my attention when it was listed as one of PW’s romances of the summer. Fortunately the book was on NetGalley and I was able to download and read it straight away. Interestingly, this is the second in the Black Knights Inc. series but it is the first that I read. It is fun and filled with action and for fans of the friends to lovers trope, this delivers a sexy and believable romance. The downside is that we spend more time with the characters’ emotional backstory than the developing romance.
In Ride's Trouble Julie Ann WalkerThree and a half years ago, Frank Knight showed up on Becky “Rebel” Reichert’s doorstep wanting to use her custom motorcycle fabrication business as a front for a special operatives team that sometimes contracts with the U.S. Government. From the beginning Becky developed a huge crush on Frank that she believes is unrequited. Frank knows better. Not only is it not unrequited but he’d like to meet every heated stare of Becky’s with reciprocal action.
Standing in the way of their romance is Frank’s own personal sense of propriety. Becky is his business partner, the little sister of one of his best operatives, and far, far younger than Frank. (He feels “like he was just one step away from Metamucil and Viagra” and has to pop Iboprofen tablets like a kid at the pool eating candy tarts.
His resistance crumbles after Becky’s life is placed in danger while she and her wealthy best friend, Eve, are vacationing in the Seychelios waters and taken captive by pirates. The first half of the book involves the pirate rescue and the second half of the book is concerned with the ongoing threat to Becky’s life after the rescue. The book moves by speedily, interspersed by humorous dialogue, Frank’s impending heart attack (and by that I mean he’s going to give himself a heart attack being so wound up about Becky’s safety), and Frank’s teams’ interaction.
I loved Becky. She is a fun, confident heroine. She runs a successful business, competing in what is traditionally a male dominated business environment. She commands her own against the team of toughs that run around her shop. She’s not afraid to pursue what she wants.
Your welding is complete crap,” she said, running a finger along a weld he’d thought was actually pretty damned good. “But it’s obvious you’re a decent mechanic, and that’s really what I need right now, more decent mechanics. Plus,” she stood and winked, “it might be nice to have a big, strong dreamboat like you around the place day-in and day-out. Something fun to look at when my muse abandons me.”
He opened his mouth… but nothing came out. He could only stare and blink like a bewildered owl.
He was saved from having to make any sort of answer—thank you, sweet Jesus—when Bill grumbled, “Cut it out, Becky. Now’s not the time, and Boss is definitely not the guy.”
Frank as the old soul he feels like he can’t tie Becky down with a pain ridden old soldier is her perfect contrast. Whether the book portrayed the military tactics used by Frank and his team accurately is unknown to me. It felt authentic which was sufficient. None of the believability issues that plagued the first book or the extreme dialect that plagued the first and third books existed here. Becky has conned most of the team into teaching her operative tactics such as fighting, hacking, and mission planning. During one scene, Becky tries to balk at doing something Frank commands and her brother, Billy, tells her that being an operative means taking orders.
I did wish that I could have seen the two fall in love, but that takes place in the three and half years that exist off paper between the prologue and the first chapter. Instead, we are treated to several hundred pages of Frank denying himself and Becky wanting what Frank refuses to give her. Becky’s static behavior toward Frank belied her initial gumption. She wasn’t afraid to proposition him but she either didn’t read him well or refused to take more of the initiative.
The secondary plotline involves Billy and Eve who apparently shared a past romance but Billy broke it off because of Eve’s money and upbringing or so we are led to believe. In Ride’s Trouble is a fun and fast action story that could have used more internal focus but was still a good read, particularly for those who enjoy the military suspense type love stories. B-

Jane

In the superlative second installment of the Black Knights Inc. romantic suspense series (after Hell on Wheels), Walker brings together Becky Reichert, “a tattooed, sharp-tongued, Harley-riding motorcycle designer,” and alpha male and former SEAL Frank Knight, who now runs a covert military contracting operation disguised as a motorcycle shop. Becky’s ready to jump into romance, but Frank has a litany of excuses: she’s a co-worker, his buddy’s sister, and 13 years his junior (reminding Frank uncomfortably of his philandering father’s taste for teenagers). Becky heads to the Seychelles with a friend, but their boat is commandeered by pirates. Frank organizes a rescue and Becky knifes one of the pirates in the process, leaving him determined to get revenge. Review: In Rides Trouble by Julie Ann Walker
September 5, 2012
In Rides Trouble Julie Ann WalkerQuick Rundown: In Rides Trouble picks up immediately where Hell on Wheels left off. Becky Reichert, owner of the bike shop that covers for Black Knight’s Inc., is on an extended vacation with her friend Eve. Her escape to relaxation is short lived when they are both taken hostage by pirates. Level headed Becky is certain the best way to handle their current predicament is to tame her usual sharp tongue and play it cool with the enemy until her brother and the Black Knights arrive to the rescue. Frank Knight, leader of the Black Knights, is beside himself once he learns of Becky’s kidnapping. Frank has held a torch for Becky since they first met, but do to their age gap, he has never allows that torch to take flame. Becky fell for Frank the moment they met, and is frustrated with his mixed signals and lack of communication. Once Becky is rescued and they return home, the danger is far from over. Becky’s abductor is out for revenge and Frank is determined to protect Becky from danger but will Becky allow his protection, or has she had enough of Frank’s rejection to drive her away for good?
First Impression: We got our first taste of Frank and Becky in Hell on Wheels and at the time I was actually more intrigued with their story than the main characters of the first book. The older man/younger woman pairing is one I always enjoy. This couple already displayed a heavy sexual tension in the first book to the point that Becky took a leave of absence to escape not only her job, but more importantly, Frank. Now, she has been kidnapped by Pirates and Frank along with the other Black Knights are on a mission to rescue her unharmed. Once the rescue attempt was set into motion, I was excited to see how Frank’s feelings and attraction to Becky would change after he found her and they returned home.
The Hero: Frank “Boss” Knight is your typical brooding, caveman, Alpha male who has a fierce protective streak when it comes to Becky. She stirs his emotions and libido like no other woman has and he has danced around his feelings for her for three years. Not only is the age factor a reason why Frank will not pursue a relationship with Becky, but also deep seated childhood issues play a factor which we learn more about as the story progresses.
The Heroine: Independent, self-sufficient, ballsy Rebecca “Rebel” Reichert is the head mechanic of the Black Knights Inc. It’s her garage that fronts for the special ops organization and she is the only female of the group. Becky knows that Frank is attracted to her and is furious that he uses their age gap as a convenient excuse. She finds herself battling continuous aggravation and sexual frustration knowing there is a mutual attraction between the two and yet Frank won’t give an inch when it comes to pursuing anything beyond the job.
What worked: The overall flow of the story was much better than the Hell on Wheels. Less abrupt scene changes and I never felt lost with the multiple storylines. Becky and Frank had serious sexual chemistry that we witnessed in Hell on Wheels which continues strong throughout the story. There was a good balance of action and humor and the author kept the overall lighthearted toned she established in the first book. This series has more of a fluffy, funny, over-the-top vibe without heavy emotion so it hits the mark when you are looking for that type of story.
What didn’t work: I felt like we were cheated in witnessing the couple’s romance take flight. There is no description of courtship or development of feelings and love. We only witness their long term lust for each other which finally consumes them both. What we do observe is miscommunication and misunderstandings by two stubborn characters that are scared to admit their attraction. When they finally give into their feelings, I questioned what attracted them to each other to begin with, other than their excessive sparing/arguing.
Final Conclusion: The story was fun and enjoyable, however I expected to see the couple fall in love and we never witness it on the page and that was my biggest disappointment.
Favorite Quote:
“First of all, he said, scowling, as he watched her wrestle herself into her clothes. You and I do not diddle. We make love. Secondly, I love Shell, but I’m not in love with her. I think there are laws against that.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking there are no flowers in my family’s attic, he said as he shoved himself back inside his jeans and fumbled one-handed with the buttons.”

REVIEW: Rev It Up by Julie Ann Walker
JaneC REVIEWSContemporary / paramilitary / reunited-lovers / romantic-suspense / unrequited-love2 Comments
Dear Ms. Walker:
I really enjoyed book 2 in the series, but the problems that affected my enjoyment of book 1 and in book 2 were magnified in this one and I am sorry to say I will be leaving this series behind after “Rev It Up”.
Rev It Up by Julie Ann Walker“Rev It Up” like the two books before it in the series is about unrequited friends to lovers. I wished there had been some kind of change in the dynamic. Why three books with such similar tropes?
Jake the Snake* Sommers and Michelle Carter had feelings for each other but Jake pushed Michelle away, fearing he would not be good for her. She ended up marrying one of his Navy SEAL teammates who subsequently died in gunfire in Afghanistan. Jake is beset with guilt but five years later, Jake is working for Michelle’s brother and determined to win her over. The series centers around a paramilitary organization, Black Knights, Inc., headed by Frank (“Boss”) Carter which is headquartered in Chicago and operates out of a custom bike and car shop. Jake has left the SEALs to join the group.
The dialect that everyone spoke with in the book was distracting. The number of apostrophes used in place of letters in this book must be a new record. Everyone was dropping letters from Shell thinking about Jake (A California surfer ’til the day he died) to a Cajun member of the team (How d’ya think she’s gonna feel about havin’ you back around?”) to Jake (“Dunno, brohah,” he wheezed).
The romance read weak for me and and I suppose that is why there is plenty of time given to a secondary unrequited love storyline that I presume is a sequel and the suspense angle which involves a bounty being placed on each one of the BKI operators and conveniently places Michelle in danger so that she is in need of protection from Jake.
There are at least five different points of view in the story: Michelle, Jake, Vanessa (future heroine), Rock (future hero) and the villain. I wasn’t even sure why we got the creepy villain’s POV as it did not add tension to the story.
The storyline involving the kid seemed ridiculously over the top and used only to provide conflict in the relationship in order to elongate the romance given that Jake was chasing Michelle around declaring his undying love from the opening of the book.
In the end, I was just worn down by the predictability of the romance. It didn’t bring anything new to the table, not in terms of the villain driven by revenge, nor in the “I’m not good enough for you” romantic conflict.
This may be a case where “Rev It Up” would work better for newcomers to the series than long time series readers. I was frustrated with the lack of series continuity, the repetitive emotional trope, and the overuse of dialect to create flavor and character differences. Newbies to the series wouldn’t be as adversely affected. C
Best regards,
Jane

Thrill Ride is exactly as the name reads…one heck of a Thrill Ride! The story picks up where Rev It Up ends. No time to catch your breath. So hang on tight as we try to live up to the story and keep you engaged for the review!
Ex-Navy SEAL Rock Babineaux has two jobs and a very heavily guarded past. Trained in interrogation he is the best, but with each interrogation, a piece of his soul seems to become lost. With a side mission in the works, the entire thing starts to blow up when his marks start showing up dead. Labeled a rogue, on the run from the government and even the Black Knights. But one feisty woman won’t let him escape that easily both from the team that can help him and the attraction she knows both of them feel.
Vanessa Cordova recently joined the Black Knights as a communications specialist. This probably was my most confused issue of the story. I just didn’t feel Vanessa fit in with the team. Not that she wasn’t a wonderful woman, just she didn’t seem to fit the role the team assumes in an agent. She does fit in personality wise, she is also a great communications specialist, but you never really feel she has any real time in the trenches. Suddenly she is dressed up as a boy following Rock into a jungle, which was confusing, not knowing what she really is capable of.
The Knights are convinced Rock isn’t guilty, but slivers of unrest seem to be there for a few. In the end, no matter what they think, they are there to protect and stand by Rock. The action scenes were a little hokey, but in a way they were still really fun to read.
It was exciting to see some past characters get in on the action. Comedy is also not left behind, imagine vibrators taped to windows. We also get to meet the next love story, which we have seen in a past book as well.
Packed with action, suspense, love and sweaty times between the sheets, Thrill Ride delivers the awesome experience that lets your forget your own life for a while and immerse yourself in a world where you can enjoy the ride.

Even his teammates at BKI aren’t sure they can trust him—with the exception of sassy communications specialist Vanessa Cordero, who knows that the sweet guy who patiently taught her to ride a motorcycle couldn’t possibly be on the wrong side of the law. Rock does everything he can to push Vanessa away, believing he’s doomed. But is he? After a hair-raising firefight, BKI operatives spirit Rock away while searching for the truth, which comes in a surprising and suspenseful series of twists. The feisty heroine and her honorable hero will be impossible for readers to resist. Walker’s best yet. Agent: Nicole Resciniti, the Seymour Agency. (Apr.)

She's got three rules:
1. Trust no one… Eve Edens has been abandoned, used, or manipulated by almost everyone she's ever met. Born into ridiculous wealth, she's dealt with the petty jealousies and sordid little resentments for nearly thirty years. But after three botched attempts on her life, she can no longer ignore the truth. Someone wants her dead.
2. Avoid the bad boys at all costs… William "Wild Bill" Reichert, the wonderfully sexy boy who abandoned her years ago, is back in town. Only he's no boy. Now he's a covert operative - and he's all man. When Eve hires Bill to help her discover who is behind the attacks, Bill soon comes to suspect it's someone much closer to Eve than she dares to believe.
3. And never fall for the same ruse twice… The search for the killer takes Bill and Eve deep into the dark secrets and strange world of the rich and famous, and into the heart of red-hot passion re-ignited by the peril that threatens to consume them both. But does Eve dare risk her heart on Bill a second time?
Why I Read this Book: Born Wild is THE book I’ve been waiting for. Bits and pieces of Eve and Bill’s backstory have been mentioned here and there in previous books but I’ve been waiting to find out their entire story. There’s tension and angst settling between the two and I wanted to find out the root of it all. And I did.
What I Liked: There’s still chemistry between Bill and Eve, even after all the years that have passed since they were a couple. It was evident in previous books and it’s clear in Born Wild. There’s good reason for the tension, very good reason. Things weren’t quickly patched up, yet, it didn’t take forever and a day for them to straighten things out either.
Delilah is fierce! She has an eye for Mac and she isn’t afraid to let him, and everyone else, know. She comes on strong and lays it thick. Like when Mac walks into her bar and she says “Somebody slide me a glass, will ya? Because I just spied me a tall drink of water!” I like how the author sets up another romance yet doesn’t complete it. There’s enough there to establish a foundation, with its faults, that makes me excited for the next book in the series. As long as the author doesn’t make me wait too long for their book. And I love how Delilah isn’t fooled by the bike shop façade. She knows something else is going on behind those walls.
What I Didn’t Like: I kept going back and forth on who I thought the villain was. (I’m always trying to figure out who the bad guy is.) In Born Wild, I felt like I was being taken on a bit of a wild goose chase, trying to figure out who was behind everything. Particularly when a specific item was mentioned, an item that had been mentioned only once before (thank goodness for the search function on ebooks!), which I thought was linked to the villain but turned out to be incorrect.
Memorable Moment:
“And lest you think I’m bluffing, let me first inform you that I did two tours in Iraq and three in Afghanistan. I killed and maimed my enemies, and I did it all with a song in my heart. So, rest assured, I have no problem pulling this trigger and turning your greasy head into nothing more than spatter patterns.”
Overall Impression: Born Wild gave me what I’ve been waiting for - Bill and Eve’s story – but I was more into the romance part of the story than I was the suspense element. I did like the setup for a romance between Delilah and Mac. I just hope I don’t have to wait too long for their book.

Synopsis:
Only the most urgent crisis could force Delilah Fairchild to abandon her beloved biker bar and ask the surly Bryan “Mac” McMillan for help. Her uncle—the man who raised her—has vanished into thin air, and Mac is the only person with the right connections to help her find him. What the ex-FBI agent has against her is a mystery…but when the bullets start to fly, Mac is her only chance of finding her uncle alive.
Mac knows that beautiful women can’t be trusted, but he has to put his natural wariness of Delilah aside in order to help her. With the clock ticking, Mac and Delilah find themselves holding on to each other in the wildest adventure of their lives.
Quick & Dirty: Bikers, CIA, abductions, and one heck of a thrill ride!
Opening Sentence: “Mac was drunk.”
Excerpt: Yes
The Review:
Mac is a former FBI agent drinking in a bar one night with a former CIA agent, when Delilah comes in and tells them her uncle is missing. Right away the men know that something is wrong. On top of her uncle being missing it is clear that Mac and Delilah are fighting one heck of an attraction. When they realize that Charles, a friend of her uncle’s, is missing Delilah knows this has something to do with his past.
As they try to hunt down who abuducted her uncle, they soon find out this is bigger than just a kiddinapping. It is also a twisted revenge plot and a possible terrorist attack. Soon they are joining forces with others who have their own agenda in the situation. All the while Mac and Delilah fall deeper and deeper in love with each other. Soon they are giving in and getting in bed.
But when Delilah disappears will Mac be able to find her before they kill her or worse? Will Delilah be able to hold out until Mac can save her?
I don’t know about bikers who were former members of various different agencies. It was an alright book other than that premise. Although I am not sure how a terrorist could or would learn about who ordered or operated a drone strike, so for me some things were just a little hard to swallow. All in all though, this was a fast paced, easy read. Interesting romance, pretty good main characters.
Creepy villians and interesting backstory, so pretty good over all. I have not read any of the other books in the series, so I don’t know if some of my confusion would be cleared up if I do read the first five books, or if they are kind of like a series with different romances in each book and a connecting backstory.
Notable Scene:
Her head whipped to the side. Her lip split open. Pain Seared. Blood trickled and dripped from her chin. She could smell it, the iron richness of it. But she didn’t cry out. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. The Bastards. Slowly turning back to face the learer. She didn’t attempt to hide her hatred. It was there in the hot glow of her eyes, in the wide flare of her nostrils.

Walker’s heart-pounding seventh Black Knights Inc. contemporary (after Hell for Leather) is her best yet. Abby Thompson, daughter of the U.S. president, has long held herself responsible for the bombing that killed her mentor, Rosa Soto. She’s also helplessly in love with Rosa’s twin brother, Carlos. After his beloved sister is killed, Carlos ditches med school and signs up with the Army Rangers. Then he joins the black ops organization known as Black Knights Inc. Nicknamed “Steady,” he can remove a bullet from a team member with ease—but he can’t keep from loving Abby. While Abby is at a horticultural conference in Kuala Lumpur, militant radicals kidnap her. She knows Carlos will rescue her—if she can stay alive until he gets there. In Full Throttle (Black Knights Inc. #7) by Julie Ann Walker, Abby is the president’s daughter. She sometimes Full-Throttlecraves a ‘normal’ life, not having to be surrounded by security, but she accepts what is her life. Abby carries a lot of guilt about a tragedy from years ago when her friend and mentor Rosa died, blaming herself and pushing away Rosa’s brother Carlos in a misguided attempt to protect him.
Carlos has never forgotten Abby, or the feelings she stirs in him. When a kidnapping plot is discovered and one of the president’s daughter appears to be the target, Carlos and the covert operations team he works with is brought in to protect Abby. In a place far from home, where Abby is for a work event, the unimaginable happens. With help far away, Carlos is determined nothing will stop him from rescuing Abby. And against all odds, Carlos finds Abby…but that is not the end of it. In a race against time and danger, Abby and Carlos find that neither of them has ever gotten over the other. Misunderstanding and secrets have to take a back seat to survival, but even the past can’t be out run. Will Abby be safe? Will she ever feel safe enough to free herself from the past for a second chance with Carlos?
Full Throttle is the perfect name for the seventh book in the Black Knight Incs. series. Julie starts the book with a bang and goes full throttle from there. The main characters are both strong, and actually complement each other very well. Carlos is strong, protective, and caring. I loved him! He would do anything for Abby. Abby is smart and as independent as she can be in her life circumstance. She tries to protect others from the dangers that come with her life, but this misguided sense of responsibility was at times overwhelming, and drew out through Full Throttle, in particular with regards to her previous relationship with Carlos. At the same time this is an integral part of the plot surrounding Abby and Carlos and the distance between them over the years. I did like how Abby doesn’t try to be the hero when there is trouble…she actually listens to the people trying to protect her. This is a very refreshing and likable characteristic in a heroine for me!
Julie Ann Walker gives a great background on Abby and Carlos so that I really felt I knew how things were in the past with them, and it made the feelings that still existed between them easy to believe and realistic.
Julie Ann writes with great detail to the setting, and picturing Abby and Carlos in the jungle country is easy. I really liked the change of setting from previous Black Knights Inc. books. It really makes Full Throttle stand out and easy to read as a stand alone. There are various secondary characters, some new, some you will recognize from previous BKI books. They all fit well with the plot and make sense to the story.
There is a strong sub plot in Full Throttle that makes it about more than the relationship between Abby and Carlos, giving Full Throttle dimension and a real edgy feel that kept me guessing! Julie Ann Walker gives us a great mix of everything romantic suspense needs…action, conflict, suspense, danger, and great chemistry between the main characters.
Full Throttle is fast paced and easy to lose yourself in. I’d recommend Full Throttle to any romantic suspense reader.
