SIDELIGHTS
Erica Vetsch is a writer based in Minnesota. She writes historical romance novels geared toward the inspirational market. Her books have received recognition by periodicals and organizations including the New York Times, Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, American Christian Fiction Writers, and Romantic Times.
In addition to writing books, Vetsch is the company bookkeeper for her family’s lumber business. She is married and has two children. Vetsch is a lover of history and enjoys going to museums. She is originally from Kansas.
The Cactus Creek Challenge
In The Cactus Creek Challenge, the reader is introduced to Cassie Bucknell, the local teacher in a rural Texas town in 1888. Cassie has been in love with the local sheriff, Ben Wilder, since they were children. Unfortunately, Ben views her as a little sister and treats her as such.
Cactus Creek has an annual fundraising event, the Cactus Creek Challenge, in which two individuals are chosen to swap jobs for a month. At the end of the month, the town votes on who did a better job taking over the work of the other. The winner receives money to fund their chosen cause. This year, the council members have changed the rules. They have invited women to participate instead of limiting to the event to men, and have decided that there will be two swaps, so four individuals altogether, participating in the event.
This year Cassie and Ben are chosen to swap. Cassie is ready for the challenge, but Ben is outraged that the council thinks Cassie could fill his shoes as sheriff. He doesn’t think Cassie can do his job, and is worried about the security of the town and concerned for her safety, as well. The other swap will be between bakery owner Jenny Hart and livery stable owner Carl Gustafson. While Jenny isn’t excited by the idea of working with livestock, she is determined to prove that she is as capable as any man.
Both stories lead to humorous clashing of characters and personalities and romantic tension as each character tries to prove they can perform just as well as their pair. “The pair of love stories flow beautifully as the reader is immersed in the joyful adventure of life in a simpler, more faith-filled time,” wrote a contributor to Publishers Weekly.
His Prairie Sweetheart
His Prairie Sweetheartpresents the story of Savannah Cox, a teacher and recent arrival to the wild prairies of Minnesota. Arriving from the south, she was recently left at the altar and seeks to have a new start in Minnesota, teaching the local Norwegian immigrant community.
Local sheriff Elias Parker is instructed to help Savannah acclimate, but he has doubts that she will be able to handle the long winter, the harsh prairie lifestyle, or the challenge of working with a mostly non-English speaking community.
Savannah is immediately met with mishaps, though proves to herself and to Elias that she is able to step up and overcome whatever hardships come her way. As Savannah adjusts to her surroundings and surprises Elias with her perseverance, a romance begins to develop between the two. Susannah Balch on RT Book Reviews website described His Prairie Sweetheartas being “well-written, well-researched and [providing] interesting insights into the Norwegian immigrant community.”
My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas
My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas is a story of love and war. The book takes place in Texas in 1874, a time when tensions between white soldiers and local Native Americans were high. The protagonist is Priscilla Hutchins, a fashion artist living in Cincinnati, Ohio. When she hears of the death of her Fort Bliss based brother and his wife, she feels it is her duty to go to Texas to retrieve his two orphaned children and bring them back with her to Cincinnati. Fort Bliss is a military town, and Priscilla hates the military, so she comes to Fort Bliss with preconceived notions about the town and its inhabitants. Upon arriving at Fort Bliss she discovers that the seven-year-olds have been under the care of Major Elliot Ryder, the Fort Bliss doctor.
Priscilla is insistent that the children come with her, but the doctor is uncertain of her intentions. Misunderstandings and misconceptions lead Priscilla to clash with the doctor and the other soldiers at the fort. Both the doctor and Priscilla turn to their Christian faith to understand one another. A contributor to Publishers Weekly penned: “Vetsch does a fine job fleshing out the protagonists, and the ancillary characters are all endearing in their own brusque or innocent way.”
The Bounty Hunter's Baby
In The Bounty Hunter’s Baby, the reader is introduced to Texas bounty hunter Thomas Beaufort. Thomas is on the hunt for cattle rustler and murderer Jase Swindell. When Thomas thinks he’s finally got Jase captured, his attempt is thwarted by Jase’s pregnant girlfriend, who promptly goes into labor. Thomas attempts to help the woman, but she dies in labor, leaving Thomas with a baby and Jase still on the run.
Thomas turns to Esther, the woman whose heart he’d broken five years earlier. Esther lives on her father’s ranch, struggling to keep it afloat. Following Thomas’ abandonment, Esther’s father’s ranch was robbed by Jase Swindell. Her father responded by taking his own life, leaving a note for Esther urging her to keep the ranch. Esther has attempted to make ends meet, but in the subsequent five years she has fallen into financial despair.
Esther is mistrustful of Thomas, and people in general, but she knows she is Thomas’ only option in caring for the motherless baby. Following the death of her father, Esther has pushed away from help from the townspeople, assuming they all disapprove of her due to her father’s actions. In reality, her cold behavior and isolationist attitude has made her unapproachable. Allowing Thomas back into her life allows her to see how much help she really needs, and that pushing away from helping hands will not serve her.
As the story progresses, Esther begins to learn the importance of second chances, and the romance between the two characters reemerges, just as dangerous elements enter back into the ranch.

My Heart Belongs in Fort Bliss, Texas: Priscilla's Reveille
Erica Vetsch. Barbour, $12.99 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-6340-9930-1
Vetsch takes readers back to the 1870s, in an unsettled west with rocky relations between Native Americans and white soldiers in this first
installation of her My Heart Belongs In series. Upon hearing about the death of her brother and his wife, Priscilla Hutchins leaves the comfort of
her Cincinnati home and heads west with the single-minded goal of consoling her nephew and niece (who are twins) and rescuing them from
what she sees as the horrors of military life, after they are placed under the guardianship of Major Elliot Ryder. Ryder, the Fort Bliss doctor, has
his hands full with the hospital, building relationships with the Kickapoo Tribe, learning about the medicinal local fauna, and watching over the
two exuberant seven-year-olds. Though the ending is telegraphed from the moment Priscilla arrives in town, Vetch's humor, description, and
dialogue make the journey entertaining. When Priscilla arrives, Major Ryder challenges her intentions and her plans for the twins. Though her
intentions are honorable, miscommunications and her own misconceptions put her at odds with Ryder and the other soldiers at the fort. Although
they're from vastly different worlds, Hutchins and Ryder both rely on their Christian faith during hard times, which is tested as well as
strengthened. Vetsch does a fine job fleshing out the protagonists, and the ancillary characters are all endearing in their own brusque or innocent
way. A promising start to a new series perfect for fans of inspiring historical romances. (Jan.)

Blending laugh-out-loud humor into a story of life on the Texas frontier is a difficult job, but Vetsch (Colorado Dawn) manages to do it with
plenty of faith and panache in this historical romance set in Cactus Creek, Tex., in 1888. Cassie Bucknell, the town's teacher, has been in love
with Sheriff Ben Wilder since she was in pigtails. Ben, however, can only see the tomboy she once was. When they become one of the two
couples to switch jobs as part of the town's month-long fund-raising challenge, Cassie's stubbornness leads her into interesting predicaments.
Jenny Hart, a baker in town, is a woman with a young daughter fleeing the past. For her part of the challenge, Jenny takes over the livery, while
livery owner Carl Gustafson is put in charge of the bakery with mixed, and hilarious, results. The pair of love stories flow beautifully as the
reader is immersed in the joyful adventure of life in a simpler, more faith-filled time. Agent: Rochelle Gardner, Books & Such Literary
