Bernie Van De Yacht is a writer, screenwriter, director, and animation casting director. Van De Yacht grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin, alongside his twelve older brothers and sisters. He attended college at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where he received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and theatre. Following graduation, he pursued a master’s in fine arts degree in acting from California Institute of the Arts. After graduation, Van De Yacht stayed in California to pursue acting. While doing so, he worked at an animation studio. One of the artists at the studio noted Van De Yacht’s resemblance to Prink Derek from The Swan Princess, and asked him to pose as the character. As a result, Van De Yacht was invited to travel the country, posing as Prink Derek.
During this time, Van De Yacht pursued acting in both films and theater. He also began working as a animation casting director, a career that he has maintained for nearly twenty years. Later in his career, Van De Yacht began casting in live action films as well as directing and screenwriting for films.
A Man Walks into a Hardware Store is Van De Yacht’s first book. Terry Boyle has an unhappy home life. His wife is depressed and unstable and he tries to avoid spending time with his seven-year-old daughter. He finds himself constantly running across Renee Patrick, a pretty woman with a bad reputation. She is known around town as a floozy. Terry just needs to breathe some life into his life. Despite her reputation, Terry enjoys being around her. Renee, however, is having a crisis of faith and desperately want to lose the “floozy” reputation. Over time, however, the sexual tension between Terry and Renee increases, and when Terry suddenly loses his job, emotions are brought to the forefront. As they get closer, Terry realizes that there is a lot more to Renee than he thought and more issues with his family than he wants to admit.
A Kirkus Reviews contributor remarked of the book: “The novel’s conclusion, flush with the kind of redemptive overtones found in Christian fiction, should satisfy readers, as both Renee and Terry seem ready for renewal, forgiveness, and the blessings of a fresh start.” The reviewer called the book “An unassuming yet potent novel about the power and possibilities of personal transformation after traumatic events.”

Bernie Van De Yacht hails from Green Bay, Wisconsin, the youngest of 12 children. He earned a BA in Psychology and Theatre from The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). After graduation, Bernie began working at an animation studio while he pursued his acting career. During that time, he was spotted by one of the artists and asked to pose for the character of Prince Derek in The Swan Princess. This opportunity allowed him to promote the movie all over the country, travel to the Cannes Film Festival, appear on a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and even have a doll made in his likeness. During this time, Bernie did theatre in and around the Los Angeles area. He eventually became an animation casting director and has been casting films for over eighteen years including The King and I, Trumpet of the Swan, Alpha and Omega, all the Swan Princess sequels, Happily N'ever After II and the upcoming Ribbit and Norm of the North. He has cast for Crest Animation, Morgan Creek, Warner Bros., Columbia/Tri-Star, Sony and Lionsgate. Recently he has branched into live action features and in the past two years has cast Blackjacks, Five Souls, The Speak and No Tell Motel. He is a proud member of the Casting Society of America (CSA) and was recently nominated for an Artios award for casting the animated feature film, Alpha and Omega. He is also a screenwriter and director. In 2004 he directed a short film called, There's Something About Meryl, which was the Official Selection at many film festivals around the country. Recently, he directed his first full-length feature film, Salvation, from his original screenplay. It has won multiple awards on the film festival circuit. In addition, he is prepping his next feature, Midwest Farmers' Daughters, once again based on his original screenplay. He and his wife have been married for twenty years and are the proud parents of two young sons.

Van De Yacht, Bernie A MAN WALKS INTO A HARDWARE STORE Manuscript (Indie Fiction)
A careful, reclusive family man becomes unhinged after a chance meeting with an aggressive seductress.
This fiction debut by a Southern California screenwriter offers interpersonal melodrama and complicated relationships. The story follows Terry Boyle, a conservative married man who repeatedly encounters curvaceous, aggressive, fearless Renee Patrick, owner of the local Hardware California supply store. Renee's reputation as Porterville's resident floozy and remorseless, brazen homewrecker has been well-established throughout the years: she's a woman who doesn't particularly enjoy the company of men outside of the bedroom and doesn't believe in marriage because "she'd never seen one work." Terry's life at home with a depressed, unstable wife and 7-year-old daughter has become laborious, so making excuses to see Renee seems to breathe new life into his stagnant world. Though she's depicted as an angry, insatiable man-eater, Renee soon emerges as a multifaceted character. She's a horse owner who spends time in a barn compassionately tending to her stallion. And she eventually begins to come to terms with her present situation, her future, her critical mother, and a childhood spent with a sexually abusive father. All of these issues surface at a church service after the death of her mother when Renee admits to a desperate need to rehabilitate her image. Meanwhile, Terry's paranoia about his job stability becomes a reality when he is let go from an insurance company. Aside from visiting his therapist, he embarks on a much-needed period of self-reflection. Midway through, Terry's and Renee's personal catharses overshadow the mounting sexual tension between them. This narrative element elevates the story from a raunchy seduction yarn to a deeper, more introspective work of fiction, despite an awkward revelation about Terry's family that he has yet to emotionally process. Van De Yacht's talents as a storyteller are solid and impressive. Well-structured, the appealing book delivers polished writing and multidimensional characters (Renee says of Terry: "His face had a haunted look. It was eerily reminiscent of the lost potential and unforgiving harshness of a mug shot, yet there was residual evidence suggesting he hadn't always looked this way"). The novel's conclusion, flush with the kind of redemptive overtones found in Christian fiction, should satisfy readers, as both Renee and Terry seem ready for renewal, forgiveness, and the blessings of a fresh start.
