Novelist Kimberly Stuart has always wanted to be a writer, but she found her voice after becoming a mother. As she told an interviewer on the Mike’s Blog & Notes Website, “for a long time, I wanted to write books that I thought I SHOULD be writing. My coveted genre was dark literary fiction, accompanied by reams of horrible poetry. Turns out, God did not wire me to write stories like that, try as I might. I’m about as dark as Pollyanna. Once I started writing in my most natural voice and cadence, I found contemporary comedic fiction to be the best fit.” Stuart went on to explain: “I write during the afternoon, which is not naturally my best body time but I’ve had to force it into accommodating that schedule. I have three young children and I am blessed (most days) to stay home with them. So I write while they are napping or at school. I’m also a deadline and goal girl, so I set a word count I need to reach each day or week and I plug along until I reach it.”
Stuart’s first novel, Balancing Act, was published by NavPress in 2006, and it serves as the first installment of the “Heidi Elliott” series. The second installment in the series, Bottom Line, was published by NavPress a year later. The book was followed by the standalone novel Stretch Marks in 2009 and the standalone novel Operation Bonnet in 2011 (both books were published by David C. Cook).
Operation Bonnet
Operation Bonnet follows twenty-one-year-old Nellie Monroe, an aspiring private investigator. As Nellie focuses on her career goals, she must contend with her quirky and dysfunctional family. She also has to deal with her former literary aspirations; Nellie was once deemed a savant as a child, but she’s no longer interested in becoming a writer. As she perseveres, Nellie is offered her dream job: Working as a private investigator for Amos Shetler. Nellie’s new employer is a former member of the Amish community, and Nellie’s job is to spy on Amos’s former lover (who’s still a member of that same community). This means that Nellie will have to pose as Amish and infiltrate the very town that excommunicated Amos.
Reviews of Operation Bonnet were largely positive, and critics noted that the book offers lighthearted and entertaining, yet thoughtful, fare. For instance, a Publishers Weekly contributor stated that “Stuart’s work certainly provides amusing spiritual takeaways for readers to privately file away for later reference.” An online Pililla Writes correspondent was also impressed, asserting that the novel is “an enjoyable read with tasteful humour; not totally predictable.” The correspondent went on to advise that “Stuart writes with humour and heart, creating believable characters and realistic dialogue that I think you will enjoy.”

Commenting on her 2017 standalone novel, Sugar, Stuart told online Huffington Post interviewer Brandi Megan Granett that the protagonist, Charlie, “is a pastry chef and is hustling to make it as a strong, capable woman in a very male-dominated career. I loved researching what her days would hold, how she came to have her position, and what it takes to stay on top of the restaurant game. Her work and her fierce commitment to doing it well was a great place to start the story and, as it turns out, build an environment that led to a great romance.” Indeed, the pastry chef is so focused on her career that she has time for little else, but that doesn’t mean that love can’t find her. After years of being promised the role of head pastry chef by her boss, Charlie finally stops waiting and accepts a job in Seattle. The job means being part of a reality show that films kitchen crews, and Charlie immediately clashes with Avery and the rest of the crew. Yet, Charlie is determined, and it definitely helps when her friends set her up with the diner owner, Kai.
Like its predecessor, Sugar fared well with critics, and an online Lady Katie Reads reviewer praised the characters, remarking: “I really liked Charie’s story from the start. It might be because I have a sister heading into the pastry chef career, but I thought it was nice that Charlie had a pretty no-frills life in New York City because that aspect could have been unrealistically played up.” The reviewer added: “I loved Kai’s character because he really was everything that Charlie wanted in a man, and she almost lost him because of Avery and his show’s crew members.” Fresh Fiction Website columnist Sharon Salituro also lauded the characters, and she found that “Charlie is a very strong women in a man’s world. And Avery and Kai, both very good looking men with brains to back it up. I can only image what the hustle would be in a restaurant.” In the words of a Publishers Weekly critic, however, “Stuart . . . has some talent with prose, but there’s nothing sweet about this bland romance.”
A far more positive assessment was provided by a critic on the That Book Lady Blog, and they found that “the author did a good job of developing Charlie’s character. Her change of heart about being on a reality show comes about in such subtle ways.” As an online Nocturnal Book Reviews columnist put it, “this is a great story of self-discovery with scrumptious desserts in between. The romance is sweet and very realistic.” The columnist then stated that “all the characters in the book are very engaging and easy to sympathise with, and overall, it’s a feel-good story, well-researched on a matter of chefs’ lives and the world of reality TV shows. I totally enjoyed it and won’t hesitate to read Kimberly Stuart in the future.” Offering further applause on the Veracious Reads Website, a critic declared: “Final touchdown on Kimberly’s writing. IT IS SENSATIONAL. Her storytelling is beyond imagination and her attention to details is engaging and doesn’t bore you to death . . . I’m. A. New. Fan. Will definitely look forward to reading more of her works.”

Stuart is the author of five published novels, including the Heidi Elliott series, Act Two, Stretch Marks, Operation Bonnet and a sixth, Sugar, set to release February 2017. She is a frequent public speaker and is passionate about helping others live great stories.
Kimberly lives, plays, works and eats lots of chocolate in Des Moines, Iowa, where she makes her home with one forgiving husband, three wily kids and a black Schnauzer named Scout.
I love a good story. Always have. And I think happy endings are seriously underrated.
I am Dutch. This explains a lot of really complicated things about me, including my love for almond paste in baked goods. Also, I’m not very complicated.
Writing was my second choice for a career. Originally I planned to be Amy Grant. I can still sing any one of her songs on command. I’m a huge hit at parties! Can I get an El Shaddai?!
I have an uncanny ability to choose flattering hairstyles. It’s a gift.
I tried being sad and deep for a long time. I tried Serious Kim, Dark Poetry Kim, Sylvia Plath Kim, and most regrettably, Pretend-Artsy Kim.
But when I look at the evidence, that was never the real me.
The real me loves to laugh. Often at inappropriate moments, like during piano recitals...
and when posing for three-generation photos...
or when it is definitely NOT my birthday.
When I finally figured out I should knock off the act and just be myself, that’s when I started writing books. And turns out, I’m not the only one in the market for a good story, a gut laugh, and a very happy ending.

The one-sided first-person narrative and lack of romantic chemistry make this romance difficult to swallow. Pastry chef

Charlie Garrett is tired of holding out for a promotion at the Manhattan eatery where she’s been slaving away for years as an underappreciated pastry chef. But then her ex-boyfriend and culinary school classmate Avery offers her a position as head pastry chef at his new restaurant in Seattle, and he won’t take “no” for an answer.
Initially, this new career change and cross-country move appears to be beyond Charlie’s wildest dreams. The staff at Thrill respects her, she makes over the restaurant’s pathetic dessert menu, she has a luxurious apartment, she now lives in the same town as her best friend, and she meets an amazing guy. But it’s all too good to be true – turns out that Avery’s restaurant is the subject of a new reality TV series. He forgot to mention that little detail, and Charlie isn’t, well, “thrilled” about it. She eventually finds herself enjoying the spotlight more than she had expected, but at what cost?
I don’t often read books like “Sugar.” But the cover just looked too delicious (seriously, if I could eat it, I would), and the synopsis sounded equally appealing. I found myself enjoying this book a lot more than I thought I would, thanks to some of the laugh-out-loud dialogue between the characters and zany predicaments Charlie gets into.
The romance between Charlie and Kai seemed a bit rushed and underdeveloped, but otherwise I think the two of them balance out well as a couple. Kai, a diner owner and head cook, sees right through Charlie’s elitism and calls her on it every time. He’s straightforward but not cruel about it – I loved that.
The author did a good job of developing Charlie’s character. Her change of heart about being on a reality show comes about in such subtle ways that I was almost as surprised as she was at the way she “sells out.”
I feel like this book has all the makings of a great romantic comedy, one I would definitely watch.

3. Stuart writes comedic women’s fiction that has an infusion of faith. However, she seems to make Christians nervous. Read at your own risk, then, and e-mail her publisher if you must.

I read a foodie book a while back that I didn’t love, so this might be one that I normally wouldn’t pick up. But now after seeing this review I think I might! It looks good 🙂 thanks for sharing.

I won this book from somewhere, I think perhaps on Twitter.
This is the first Kimberly Stuart book I have read, and I enjoyed it. I wasn’t sure if a book written about the Amish community would hold my interest, but it certainly did. It isn’t even all about the Amish, but gives some insight into that lifestyle, while also following the main character in her own life in the mainstream community.
Operation Bonnet is about a young woman, Nellie, who wants to be a private investigator, but living in a small community she can find no one needing a PI. That is, until she meets Amos, a young man who, of his own accord, left the nearby Amish community and the girl he loves. He is forbidden to visit so hires Nellie to spy for him. To do that Nellie has to somehow infiltrate the strict community, so she pulls some trickery in order to get herself into the home and kitchen of the feared and respected matriarch of that community. It’s a nerve-racking experience for Nellie, for although she is quite good at keeping up in the kitchen (she loves to cook) she has trouble keeping out of trouble.
Even though Nellie is trying to help another in the romantic front, her own heart is tried because of her best friend, the guy with whom she grew up. As smart as she is she just doesn’t see what is happening in her own relationships.
What added another interesting dimension to this story, for me, is the fact that Nellie is trying to take care of her aunt who has dementia and resists allowing her parents to place her aunt in a home.
I don’t want to tell you anymore about the story because it is worth your reading it yourself. Kimberly Stuart writes with humour and heart, creating believable characters and realistic dialogue that I think you will enjoy in Operation Bonnet.
