WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Tess Stone, who was also known the female Tessa Stone, is a comic book artist, writer, and illustrator based in San Jose, California. He has provided illustrations for several comics and is the author and illustrator of Hanna is Not a Boy’s Name, a webcomic about a human character who investigates paranormal activities. In this role he interacts with zombies, werewolves, selkies, and ghosts, and learns about the powers of dark magic. Fans of the webcomic have enjoyed its engaging mix of horror, fantasy, suspense, and unexpected humor.
Regular Show and Mages of Mystralia
Among the works for which Stone has done illustrations is Rachel Connor’s cartoon book for middle-grade readers, Regular Show: Hydration. It tells the story of a blue jay and a raccoon who discover a magical water park where the sinuous water slides are actually the arms of a giant hydra. Booklist writer Sarah Hunter described Regular Show as a work of “off-the-wall cartoon wackiness” enhanced by Stone’s “manic” and action-packed page layouts and illustrations.
Stone has also provided the lettering for Mages of Mystralia, a 2018 comic book based on a story by Ed Greenwood and tied into a Borealys Games video game of the same title. Set in a medieval-type fantasy kingdom in the aftermath of a devastating plague, Mages of Mystralia is the story of the bloody revolt against a tyrant. The plague has killed the entire ruling family, and when an inexperienced young mage is suddenly placed on the throne, his lust for power soon threatens the entire realm, forcing four fighters to lead a rebellion against him.
Not Drunk Enough
Stone’s first published book, Not Drunk Enough: Book One, follows the misadventures of Logan, a night repairman who is trapped inside an abandoned industrial lab filled with monsters. With a few other survivors of the monsters’ rampage, Logan must find a way out. But every turn seems to bring the survivors deeper and deeper into a labyrinth inhabited by gruesome and deadly creatures.
A writer for Publishers Weekly praised the book highly, commenting that Stone excels in both narrative and visual storytelling. Describing Not Drunk Enough as a “cross between The Walking Dead and Die Hard” with a twist of macabre humor, the reviewer admired the book’s sharp and fast-paced narrative, and observed that the author’s vibrant manga-style drawings of humans and scary creatures “explode on the page” with deep dark color and lines. Stone’s lettering, too, received praise for conveying the visceral violence of the story.

Not Drunk Enough
Tessa Stone. Oni, $19.99 trade paper (160p)
ISBN 978-1-62010-414-9
Hapless overnight repairman Logan finds himself fighting his way through a lab crowded with
monstrosities: manmade crimes against nature lurking down hallways and around corners. What's turned
this industrial laboratory into an urban battlefield? Logan leads the survivors (not many of them) in a quest
for the answers and the exit. Collected from Stone's (Buzz!, Hanna is Not a Boy's Name) webcomic, this
blood-spattered thrill ride is a cross between The Walking Dead and Die Hard with a dash of The Evil Deads
black humor. Rapid-fire action and sharp-as-an-axe dialogue drive a page-flipping narrative. Manga-style
angular humans and monsters explode on the page with deep blood-reds, shadowy darks, and thick black
panel borders that wall Logan in like an endless labyrinth. Even Stone's expressive lettering brings a violent,
tagged language to screams, growls, and bone crunches. The raucous fusion of smarts and shivers elevates it
above the average crowd of gory monster comics--a bloody good frightfest. (July)

Mordecai and Rigby, a blue jay and raccoon, respectively, are two slackers who stay inside to play video
games on a superhot day. This sets off a manic string of events--first, Rigby cools off inside the fridge only
to punch his way out while battling creatures inside. Then he wishes on a shooting star for some coolness,
and--presto!--a water park springs up the next morning. But the snaking slides of the water park are actually
a giant hydra, bent on destroying anything slovenly! It's useless to look for sense here, but that's OK because
the frenetic pace, crazily slanted panels, and weird jokes all play into a particularly popular brand of off-thewall
cartoon wackiness. Stone's manic page layouts are overstuffed with action, capitalizing on the absolute
absurdity of the story. Fans of the cartoon and others like it will eagerly turn out for this laugh-a-minute riot
that perfectly captures the spirit of the show, and they'll be stoked that this graphic novel, at more than 150
pages, packs more punches than any episode.--Sarah Hunter

HiNaBN is a webcomic written and illustrated by Tess Stone. The comic is a "sugarcoated horror" Urban Fantasy about a wannabe paranormal investigator named Hanna Falk Cross, who is visited at the beginning of the story by the main character. The two become partners just in time for Conrad Achenleck to complain about a vampire in his flat. Long story short, Conrad gets bitten and they completely fail their first mission, setting the vampire free from a curse of some sort. Some other vampires aren't so pleased about that, starting the main story arc.
Currently contains zombies, vampires, weird magic, ghosts, werewolves and selkies. There was more to come, but don't hold your breath. As of February 14, 2016, it has officially been 5 years without an update.
Also, the original site's domain expired, this means you'll have to read the comic on Tumblr and the links to the pages won't work anymore, so there's that.
Update: Tess has illustrated a new comic written by Ananth Panagariya called Buzz! In the meantime, it seems like he's given up on Hanna. There were rumors about some sort of legal trouble between Tess and 4D Entertainment, his publisher, that resulted in Tess being unable to continue Hanna, but this rumor appears to be untrue.
Tess is now working on a new webcomic called Not Drunk Enough.
This series has a character sheet.
