Maybe This Time

Maybe This Time, the second of the “Colorado Ice” novels, follows the story of Abigail Jansen, a recent divorcee, returning to her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado. The background story leading up to Abigail’s return to her hometown encompasses the beginning chapters of the book, offering the reader a sense of Abigail’s emotional state and her disdain for anything having to do with ice hockey. Abigail is love weary and bitter, having discovered her former husband, a professional hockey player, cheating on her. Abigail and her nine year old daughter, Dani, move into Abigail’s parent’s home and Abigail takes a job at the local school. Dani is upset about the move, and, to Abigail’s displeasure, joins the local hockey team. Dani shows a knack for the sport, and moves up to join the co-ed hockey league.

The coach of the team, Jackson Westmore, and Abigail, are far from strangers. The two went to junior high together and Jackson was, and seems to still be, Abigail’s ex-husband’s best friend. Just as when they were younger, Jackson is cold and dismissive toward Abigail. Little does she know, Jackson had a huge crush on Abigail, and as the story progresses, it becomes clear that his feelings have not faded.

Stephany Evans in Publishers Weekly described the book as “quietly humorous, profoundly moving, and captivatingly seductive, with supportive secondary characters, this novel is sure to enthrall fans and newcomers to this series.” While Jackson and Abigail bicker and clash, Abigail begins to develop an attraction toward him. Jackson continues to try to suppress his feelings, leading to friction and comical moments in the book. The story is interspersed with flashbacks from the two character’s younger years, offering the reader an understanding of how the characters ended up where they are now.

When Abigail’s ex-husband comes into town for a father-daughter dance, his questionable moral structure becomes clear to Jackson, leading to the possibility that the suppressed attraction between Jackson and Abigail may blossom into a full romance.

Maybe This Love

In the third book of the “Colorado Ice” novels, we meet famous hockey player Ben Westmore and powerful divorce attorney Olivia Davis. At thirty-four, Ben Westmore is nearing the end of his hockey career. He is focused on leading his team to winning the NHL championship, especially since he messed up in the two previous NHL playoffs. With nothing but hockey on his mind, he’s shocked when he finds out that a woman is pursuing him to get a divorce, when he has no memory of ever marrying her.

To make matters more complicated, Ben feels a strong attraction toward the woman’s attorney, Olivia. Olivia feels the attraction too, but she tries to brush it off as a hormonal blip. She’s just begun in vitro fertilization treatments. In her mid-thirties, Olivia wants a family, and will pursue this goal with or without a man at her side.

Alexis A. Goring on the RT Book Reviews website described the book as “a riveting romance with believable characters and plenty of cinematic quality drama.” As Ben and Olivia keep on running into one another, they can’t resist their attraction and a secret romance unfolds. Attempting to keep personal and professional separate, the stakes are raised with the reality that a paparazzi photo may destroy them both, professionally and personally.

    My Story
I started writing as soon as I could hold a pen. I've always been in love with books and there was never any doubt about what I wanted to be, what I wanted to do with my life. I wrote poetry and short stories in my youth and at fifteen, I submitted my first YA handwritten manuscript to Harlequin. I have no idea where the courage to that came from-probably a young arrogance. The rejection letter was so encouraging and kind that I continued writing until I graduated high school...Then real life happened lol. Multiple jobs to pay rent, university courses stealing my time and focus and boys...oh the boys that stole my heart:) Who had time for writing??
When I had my son, I decided it was time to pursue my passion again. I wanted him to see that dreams can come true if you work hard and believe in yourself. And I wrote my first published manuscript with my baby boy sitting on my lap.
Six years later, I'm doing what I love-writing uplifting stories with Happily Ever After endings!

Maybe This Love
Jennifer Snow. Forever, $7.99 mass market (304p) ISBN 9781455994870
Snow's third Colorado Ice contemporary (after Maybe This Time) is a wonderfully tender and soulful story of two
individuals pondering taking an emotional risk against their better judgement. At 34 years old, NHL star Ben
Westmore knows everyone expects him to retire soon. He needs to stay focused to lead his team to winning the NHL
championship, especially since he choked in his prior two NHL playoff appearances. Then he's hit with a double
distraction: a woman he does not remember marrying demands a divorce, and he feels a powerful attraction to her
lawyer. Divorce attorney Olivia Davis also feels the attraction, but she dismisses it her hormones being out of whack,
as she's just started in vitro fertilization treatments so she can have the family she always wanted. As Ben and Olivia
keep running into each other, their minds battle with their hearts. Sincerity and trust push fears aside and they become
confidants and lovers, but a paparazzi photo could destroy it all. Entertaining secondary characters add enjoyment as
the story pulls readers' heartstrings. Agent: Stephany Evans, FinePrint Literary Management. (June)

Snow's perfect second hockeyinspired Colorado Ice contemporary (after Maybe This Kiss) is a tender romance about
life handing two bruised, vulnerable people an unexpected second chance. Divorced from her highschool sweetheart,
who's now a superstar NHL player, Abigail Jansen hopes that her hometown, Glenwood Falls, Colo., is the right place
to restart her life. Then Dani, her nineyearold daughter, makes the local junior hockey team, and the coach turns out
to be her ex's best friend, Jackson Westmore. Jackson's snarky attitude hides his true feelings toward Abby; he knows
"the only thing more offlimits than your best friend's girl was your best friend's exgirl." As Abby and Jackson's lives
become more intertwined in that smalltown way, their sizzling sexual' chemistry leads to frustrated emotions and
difficult choices. When Dani's father comes to town for a fatherdaughter dance, he shows his true colors, prompting
Abby and Jackson to make some serious decisions. The emphasis on romance will make this book appealing even to
readers who aren't into sports. Quietly humorous, profoundly moving, and captivatingly seductive, with supportive
secondary characters, this novel is sure to enthrall fans and newcomers to this series. Agent Stephany Evans, FinePrint

    MAYBE THIS LOVE
    Author(s): Jennifer Snow
The latest in the Colorado Ice series is a riveting romance with believable characters and plenty of cinematic quality drama; plus Jennifer Snow is one clever writer. The author aptly captures the world of sports and infuses that atmosphere into the life of her hockey player hero. She portrays the heroine as a powerful lawyer with a tough exterior and soft heart.
Olivia Davis wants a family and as a woman in her mid-thirties without a romantic partner, she decides to do it the unconventional way. However, when asked to represent the case of a client who spontaneously married a famous hockey player, Ben Westmore, Olivia becomes taken by Ben’s charms. It becomes difficult to deny the chemistry between them, so she removes herself from the court case. But removing herself from their budding romance is the most challenging obstacle she’s ever faced. Maybe This Time is the second installment in Jennifer Snow‘s brand new Colorado Ice series. The author entangles such romantic tropes as finding a second chance at love, transforming a dismal situation into the best turn-of-events that could ever happen to a character, and discovering happiness after returning home. The contemporary romance brings together two would-be high school sweethearts who become true sweethearts over a decade after their graduation. The author offers readers hope that missed chances in youth can re-enter once maturity makes one ripe for a lasting romance to blossom.
    maybe-this-time
Worn out and distrustful of men, Abigail Jansen returns home to her parent’s house in Glenwood Falls, Colorado with her nine year old daughter Dani. Her decision is a reaction to catching her husband Dean in a ménage a trois with two women, and wishing to return to a simpler time in her life. Without hesitation, she divorces Dean and at the same time she crushes her faith in men while fostering a deep dislike for hockey players, Dean’s profession. This background information is laid out concisely for the reader in the opening chapters.
Not surprising, Abigail’s daughter develops a passion for the sport and shows a desire to play on her new school’s hockey team in the hopes of joining the Junior Hockey League someday. Dani’s choice causes conflicts with her mother, which the author works out through heated dialogue and moments of introspection among the characters. Their arguments force readers to be involved, making them choose between the protective mother or the adventurous daughter who feels a connection to her father through the sport.
The hockey coach at Dani’s school is Jackson Westmore, a would-be pro hockey player who comes from a family of pro hockey athletes. To complicate the plot, Jackson graduated with Dean and had a crush on Abigail since he was fifteen. The reader learns that Abigail chose to date Dean in high school but she never knew that Jackson harbored romantic feelings for her. Their relationship is complicated by Jackson’s repressed feelings coming to the surface, causing friction with Abigail.
Snow keenly weaves flashbacks from Abigail and Jackson’s youth, inviting readers to relive these moments that brought the characters to where they are in the present. She intertwines drama and humor between Jackson and Abigail with fragments of role reversal. Jackson acts like the sensitive and nurturing motherly figure who understands Dani’s passion while Abigail comes off as the overbearing fatherly figure who believes she knows better than her daughter. Their reaction to choices made and the dynamics of their relationship are relatable to the human condition, presenting situations that real people face daily and feelings that readers can share with the characters.
Snow writes the story in a way that allows readers to identify with either Jackson or Abigail as a parent figure while drawing them into the conflict and sharing the joy the pair experience when their romance blossoms. The happily ever after ending makes for a credible conclusion for two would-be high school sweethearts.

    Summary

Starting over means a second chance.

Abigail Jansen is done with hockey . . . and hockey players. After leaving her two-timing NHL-star husband, Abby decides to start over in her hometown of Glenwood Falls, Colorado. There she doesn’t have to deal with people gossiping behind her back or hear the word “hockey”—until her daughter tries out for the junior hockey team. Now Abby has to face her fears . . . and coach Jackson Westmore. He’s tall, dark, handsome—and happens to hate her.

All through high school, talented hockey player Jackson Westmore had a crush on Abby, but he would never make a move on his best friend’s girl. He gave her the cold shoulder out of self-preservation and worked out his frustrations on the ice. So when Abby returns, newly divorced and still sexy as hell, Jackson knows he’s in trouble. Now even the best defensive skills might not keep him from losing his heart.

    Review

As I continue on my journey that is the writing of Jennifer Snow I am truly delighted and amazed. How can an author so fully engage me? I will tell you how: by creating a world with charming characters with depth of character and some quirkiness (after all – aren’t we all a bit quirky in our own way?).

The story of Abigail Jansen begins with her 9-year-old daughter (Dani) giving her the silent treatment. Apparently Dani was not thrilled to be moving from California back to Abigail’s home town – Glenwood Falls, Colorado in the wake of her parent’s divorce. Abigail gets a job (at least temporarily) at the local school, where she runs into the Westmore clan. Two of the Westmore “boys” are professional hockey players in the same league as her ex. The third Westmore boy (Jackson…and he is definitely no longer a ‘boy’) is the local hockey coach and best friend (or is he?) of her ex. Abigail has a history with Jackson so she has vowed to avoid him at all costs but then her daughter tries out for the junior co-ed hockey league….and makes it. So avoiding coach Westmore is not an option. And let me tell you…the sparks fly.

I love how honorable Jackson tries to be in the beginning, like he is respecting some time honored teen code to not hit on your best friend’s girl (even though he was interested in her first). But as time goes by and Jackson learns of the ill treatment Dean bestowed upon Abigail, you can sense Jackson’s loyalties shifting. The electric energy between the two is palpable and I could not but hope that they could come together, regardless of their fighting the attraction. Make no mistake, Abigail fights this attraction tooth and nail (so to speak).

“The only thing holding him back from making a move was her obvious disdain for him whenever they were forced to share the same air.”

When it finally seems like Abigail and Jackson have set up ground rules to be able to interact together as parent and coach, you get passages like the following which definitely tell a different story:

“He stared at her mouth. Damn, a kiss from those beautiful pink lips would be worth a slap in the face. One taste of her would be worth unraveling any progress they’d made in becoming friendly. Who the hell wanted friendly?”

When Jackson finally confesses that he has feelings (and actually has since the second grade), things get very sticky (and hot):

“..Jackson, why did you kiss me?”

“Because I have feelings for you.”

    “Like good feelings?”

“No, terrible, unwanted, unreciprocated, completely wrong feelings…but they’ve always been there, and now it seems they have a mind of their own.” he said.

It seems that Jackson has always carried a torch and did not know how to act upon it nor express it, before his best buddy Dean fell for Abigail. Now he has his opportunity. Let’s hope he can be the man that Abigail needs.

I found the progression of the relationship (once it got started) both plausible and proper for a single mother. I really liked Jackson’s caring behavior not only towards his own niece, Taylor, but also towards Dani. Both Jackson and Abigail took into account the kids when proceeding with their relationship. A plus in my books.

The plot moved at a good pace and kept my interest throughout. I enjoyed the professional hickey game where brother was pitted against brother! Who doesn’t love a good match up. I really liked this second chance romance between two childhood ‘friends’. I cannot wait for the next book in this series…..I am hooked 😉
