SIDELIGHTS

Harper Sloan has made a name for herself through her work as a romance novelist. She has penned multiple works, including three books under the “Coming Home” series of romantic westerns.

In Lost Rider, the first book of the series, Leighton and Maverick are former childhood friends who reunite through unexpected circumstances. Leighton was actually the best friend of Maverick’s sister, but she held feelings for Maverick for most of her life. However, her chance of building a deeper relationship with him is quickly threatened when Maverick, fed up with his parents’ abuse and neglect, begins making plans to move from their small Texas town to start a rodeo career. While Leighton wants to catch Maverick’s eye more than anything, she fails; in fact, she hears him openly expressing his disinterest, and her feelings are crushed in the process.

After a decade of separation, Leighton and Maverick meet again at the funeral of Maverick’s father. Leighton has matured and changed so much that Maverick scarcely recognizes her, and while he has realized his feelings for her by now, he cannot bring himself to act on them. In the meantime, Leighton has never lost her feelings for Maverick, but she also will not put up with his rude treatment of her now. Nevertheless, their mutual attraction to each other is hard for either of them to ignore.

In Publishers Weekly, a reviewer stated: “This absolutely spectacular effort catapults Sloan to the top of her genre.” A Kirkus Reviews contributor remarked: “There’s no question … that Sloan knows her way around sexual tension and emotional intensity.” The reviewer called Lost Rider “sexy and mostly satisfying.” Booklist reviewer Amy Alessio recommended the book “for fans of Carolyn Brown’s contemporary westerns.” On the Smexy Books website, a writer commented: “Maverick [and] his southern drawl and all his ‘darlin’s’ and his Stetson and dusty boots are going to make you swoon.” The reviewer went on to add: “And Leighton is such a fun heroine.” A contributor to the Good, the Bad, and the Unread blog remarked: “Family secrets, dysfunction, abuse, love, second chances, and two characters who will forever take up space in your heart and in your mind.” The reviewer added: “This is one of those books that you will re-read again and again.”

Kiss My Boots

Kiss My Boots is the next book and follows Quinn, Maverick’s sister. Quinn spends her days working in an auto shop as a mechanic, and she loves her job. She also loves Tatum, a man she has known since childhood. Tatum used to visit her small Texas town during the summer to see his grandparents. Gradually over the course of each visit, Quinn and Tatum developed feelings for each other, but their budding love was unable to come to fruition.

Tatum is from a wealthy family, and while he has grown up with privilege, he has been exposed to just as much responsibility. Tatum’s parents want him to pursue a medical career. Tatum originally planned to attend university in the same town Quinn lived in, so he could be close to her. However, his parents not only refused to support this path, but they threatened the well-being of Quinn and her family if Tatum kept entertaining the thought of being with her. Tatum chose to obey his parents and cut contact with Quinn entirely.

Years later, Tatum suddenly returns to the town to claim the private practice of his grandfather, who has recently passed. Quinn is thrilled to learn Tatum has come back to town, but she has some reservations. He has already broken her heart before, and that old wound is still present in her mind. Quinn’s brothers are also against her pursuing a relationship with Tatum because of what happened between them so many years ago.

Smexy Books reviewer called the novel “a really fun and sexy read.” On the Harlequin Junkie blog, a contributor said: “If you enjoy second chance stories in a small town western setting, you may want to check this one out.” Patti Loveday, a writer on the Fresh Fiction blog, commented: “Sloan writes with such a creative and unique way that makes you want to visit Pine Oak, Texas.” She added: “The setting is well thought out and together with the plot line it makes for a romantic summer read.”

Cowboy Up

Cowboy Up follows Maverick and Quinn’s older brother, Clayton. Being the oldest child has shaped Clay into a level-headed and responsible person—perhaps to his detriment. He does not see any need to break out of his stoic demeanor and open up to others, especially since doing so has hurt him deeply in the past. However, everything changes when Clay meets a young woman by the name of Caroline. Just like Clay, Caroline is dealing with some catastrophic fallout from a toxic relationship, and she intends to enjoy her newfound independence. However, when the two meet, their chemistry quickly yanks them into a passionate one-night affair. While the two are deeply attracted to one another, neither of them wants to be caught up in a relationship after such terrible prior experiences. But fate seems to have other plans in store for the couple—plans that will inevitably draw them together and make it hard for them to suppress their feelings. Before anything more can grow between Caroline and Clay, however, they must first push past their fears.

“This is an emotionally satisfying series wrap-up,” commented a Publishers Weekly contributor. A writer on the Steamy Reads blog commented: “Harper Sloan sure knows how to draw you in with her plot, humor, steam, emotion, romance and let’s not forget those broody sexy cowboys that she creates that I just can’t help but fall in love with.” On the Smexy Books blog, a reviewer stated: “I had so much fun reading this series,” and a Romance Junkies contributor wrote: “If you like a sexy cowboy story with a lot of sass then Cowboy Up will satisfy you.”

    About

Harper Sloan is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal & USA Today Bestselling Author of the Corps Security series, the Hope Town series and the stand alone novel, Perfectly Imperfect.

Harper lives in Cumming, Georgia just a few hours north of her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed ‘Estrogen Ocean’, much to her husbands chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero–the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy, it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.

Harper Sloan. Pocket, $7.99 mass market (384p) ISBN 978-1-5011-5527-7
Sloan's third Coming Home Western contemporary (after Lost Rider and Kiss My Boots) tops even the superbly done first two books in the series. Book nerd Caroline Michaels returns to her tiny * Texas town of Pine Oak, fresh out of an abusive relationship. She renews her acquaintance with her childhood crush: rancher Clayton Davis, a white knight in jeans and a cowboy hat who will stick up for his woman no matter what. He is sensitive, strong, and eager to settle down with Ms. Right. But an evil ex threatens to end the happily-ever-after that Clayton and Caroline yearn for. Corny dialogue ("I like you lookin' at me like this a whole lot more than I like you doin' it with feat in your eyes") sometimes detracts from Sloan's red-hot love scenes and tight plotting, but not enough to put off most readers. Alternating the protagonists' points of view and providing a song suggestion with each chapter, Sloan crafts a heart-tugging tale. This is an emotionally satisfying series wrap-up. (Dec.)

Sloan (When I'm with You) hits it out of the park with her first Coming Home contemporary western romance, the tale of a lonely cowboy and the hometown sweetheart who has never stopped loving him. Rodeo rider Maverick Davis hightailed it out of Pine Oak, Tex., the minute he could, desperate to escape his abusive father. But in leaving, Maverick deeply wounded Leighton James, the shy girl who had loved him since they were children. A decade after his departure, Maverick's father has died, and Maverick's high-profile rodeo career is ended by a serious injury. He returns to his hometown hoping to forge a new life for himself. Leighton has closed herself off from love, instead channeling all of her energy into her successful bakery, the PieHole. Now that Maverick is back, she struggles to overcome the hurt and to trust the love of her life to treat her more kindly the second time around. Maverick is a perfect hero: multilayered, complicated, deeply damaged, yet blooming with the new promise of love. Leighton is appealing and real, as are a strong supporting cast of characters whom readers will be glad to follow into sequels. Sloan enhances the gripping story with country songs that open each chapter. This absolutely spectacular effort catapults Sloan to the top of her genre. Agent: Marisa Corvisiero, Corvisiero Literary. Sloan, Harper LOST RIDER Pocket (Adult Fiction) $7.99 4, 25 ISBN: 978-1-5011-5519-2
A rodeo champion returns to his small hometown and has to figure out how to repair the relationships he damaged years ago when he left, both with his siblings and with his soul mate.Days after a career-ending injury, Maverick Davis gets word that his father has died and makes his way back to Pine Oak, Texas. Arriving just at the end of the funeral, he immediately antagonizes his family and insults Leighton, his sister's best friend and the girl he's never forgotten. Maverick left to follow his rodeo dream and to escape his father, who was abusive to all his children but brutal to Maverick. Now that his father is gone and his career is over, he needs to figure out what to do next, and he'd like to plant new roots in Pine Oak, but between his uncertainty about his work life and everyone's mistrust of his declared intentions to stay, it's hard. Yet he knows that his future lies with Leighton, and her future is in Pine Oak. Establishing a sexual relationship bonds them in a new way, yet it also confuses them, given their prickly past. Sloan begins a new Western series with engaging characters and an appealing small-town setting; her second-chance-at-love romance resonates emotionally even though the conflict becomes problematic as Maverick and Leighton continually overthink their own and each other's motivations and choices. The back-and-forth dance about what they may or may not want, and whether or not they can trust each other to be honest about their feelings and hopes, gets a little tedious. There's no question, however, that Sloan knows her way around sexual tension and emotional intensity. Sexy and mostly satisfying.

Maverick left his small Texas town 10 years ago for a life as a professional bull rider. Now a series of injuries and a death in the family bring him home, and he doesn't recognize the only person outside of his family who he really missed, Leighton. Although she hasn't forgotten him, the way he hurt her before he took off is still in her thoughts as she works at her successful pie shop. Sloan brings plenty of heat to this otherwise very thoughtful, building love story, the first in her Coming Home series. After losing her parents, Leighton doesn't think she can trust that Maverick means to stay this time. Maverick's pursuit of Leighton and her slow acceptance ignites the vivid ranch and small-town settings. Contemporary western romances are challenging to write, and Sloan makes it fun to read about realistic ways cowboys can fit into modern society. Readers will look forward to learning how the uncovered family secrets affect siblings Clay and Quinn in future books. For fans of Carolyn Brown's contemporary westerns.--Amy Alessio

Favorite Quote: “Are you drunk, baby?” Maverick smirks at me.

    I nod.

“You want to keep getting drunk or go home?”

“That depends,” I whisper huskily, crooking my finger so he’ll bend closer to me. “Do I get to ride my cowboy in both scenarios or only one?”

I’ve never read Harper Sloan (I plan to hit her back list hard after this one) and when I saw in the blurb the hero is a retired rodeo star, I decided to try it. I’m so, so glad I did because I really enjoyed this book and this author’s voice. The way she writes her hero (and maybe even her heroine) reminds me a bit of Kristen Ashley, which is a good thing.

Maverick is an asshole to start – and I have to say, an asshole hero done right is my catnip. Two things happen that make him a successful asshole: one, he is redeemed by the end of the book (dare I say, he turns quite mushy after starting off VERY intense) and two, Leighton, our heroine, stands up to him and gives it back just as good as he dishes it out. I adored her.

Maverick and Leighton grew up together in Pine Oaks, Texas, and Leighton crushed hard on Maverick who is a few years older than her. When he is eighteen, Maverick decides he needs to leave this town and explore his dreams of being a rodeo star. In a desperate attempt to gain his attention, Leighton goes to a bonfire shortly before he leaves, dressed in a more…mature fashion..and overhears Maverick saying how she is trying too hard and she has the body of a boy. Devastated, Leighton flees, and Maverick leaves for rodeo stardom, not to be seen again for years.

But Maverick won’t be gone forever. Ten years later, he has had one too many concussions and can’t ride anymore. At the same time, he learns his father has died, so he grudgingly goes back home for the funeral, and to see his brother Clay, his sister Quinn and back to the family ranch. He doesn’t like ranching, but he also feels like with his rodeo career over, it’s time settle down and help out his brother and sister. Maverick had an abusive father and a mother who abandoned the family – so there is no love lost over the death of his father. His father never once supported his rodeo career:

Instead, all I can focus on is the fact that, even at my peak, I wasn’t good enough for him to be proud of me.

No matter what, the silence from him over the years said it all. He couldn’t give two fucks what I accomplished out there on the circuit.

It took me a long time to realize that I had been pushing myself for so long to prove to him I was worthy, but even when I fucking knew it wasn’t worth it, something inside me still wanted to matter to Buford Davis.

When Maverick arrives back in Pine Oak he is bitter, pissed off, and in no mood for friends or family. And then he sees Leighton at the funeral.

Leighton has spent the years with Maverick gone, well, thinking about him. She has opened a very successful pie shop in town, and is happy – but her love for Maverick has never wavered. She is extremely close with both Quinn and Clay – they have become her family and she knows the tension with Maverick being gone so long and not really part of the ranch or family is pretty intense. She knows Maverick will be back for the funeral and her tension is ramped up too. Their reunion at the funeral however, doesn’t go so well. Maverick doesn’t even recognize her at first, thinking she is a random girlfriend of Clay’s:

“How well do you even know her? You haven’t said one word about have a new piece of ass so she must not have been in the picture long. Best I can tell, I’m not too far off the mark.”

“How well do I know her?” He laughs bitterly. “I’d say pretty well, considering she’s been Quinn’s best friend for twenty-six fuckin’ years. Why don’t you let that sink in, you fuckin’ asshole?”

My eyes leave his instantly and I look over to his truck, trying to see past the black tint that hides her from my view. No fucking way. It couldn’t be.

But even when he realizes this random woman is Leighton, he still can’t be nice. He is such a jerk – because he obviously secretly loves her, but he is so bitter over his past with his dad, and feels guilty over how he treated Leighton all those years ago – it’s easier to be a big jerk than to apologize

“Yeah. Like I said, you ain’t over shit. I was out of line. We need to put it behind us so I can go back to the ranch.”

His words hit me, the meaning clear, and I’m suddenly even more pissed than I was just a second before.

“So you can go back to the ranch?”

    “That’s what I said.”

“Why, you good-for-nothing jerk. You didn’t come over here to apologize for showing your ass, but to what? You get put in time-out by Clay? Or Quinn? You could have saved us both the trouble and just driven around in that flashy little truck of yours for a red-hot minute before heading back and reporting to them like a good little boy that you had done as ordered.”

“Now, you listen here—” he starts, stepping forward, our chests just a foot apart.

“Oh, I don’t think so, mister. You might think the sun came up just to hear you crow, but I assure you that I don’t need your cocky ass lighting my doorstep.”

I love Leighton SO much. She can take his surly attitude and throw it right back in his face. She never gets whiny or acts immature – her feisty attitude made me smile over and over again. She fully admits to herself that he is still so damn sexy, even when he is scowling and shooting off his mouth. She doesn’t deny their attraction, but doesn’t let him get away with anything either. Heck – she even throws a pie in his face!

“You want your pie?!” I yell, my voice coming out more like a high-pitched screech. My ears roar as my heart picks up speed with my anger and I feel like I can actually hear the blood rushing through my veins. “You want your blasted pie?” I knock him in the gut with my shoulder hard enough to make him shuffle back a step as I push past him and walk over to the fridge that’s closest to my office. The one that I keep all my special pies in. Wrenching the door open, I grab the closest cookie dough creation before slamming the door back.

    {…}

“You want your pie, Mav?” I ask again, this time hiding my anger behind a sticky-sweet voice and a little smile.

He doesn’t speak, and honestly, I’m not sure I’m capable of giving him a word in anyway. Without a second thought, I bring my arm back before I swing it forward and slap the whole pie into his face.

“There’s your goddamn pie, you good-for-nothing jackass!”

Have I mentioned yet that this book is sexxxxy?

With quick and impatient movements, he pulls his hips back, moves his hand from my hair and down to my hips—mirroring the hold of his other hand as he lifts me from him and slams me back down over his hard cock, impaling me completely.

He growls deep in his throat.

I scream loud enough to wake the dead.

His head falls forward, forehead to my sweat-slicked chest.

My head falls back, forehead to the ceiling.

They have explosive sex pretty quick…and then they take a step back and sort out their true feelings. Maverick goes from pissed off asshole to a pretty mushy romantic hero pretty quick in this one. I kind of wanted him to stay jerky for just a bit longer because the sexual tension was just so delicious, but his romantic side and they way he decided to court Leighton properly made me smile as well.

I also loved Clay and Quinn (her book is next). Clay is just as intense as Maverick and is extremely protective of Leighton – he squares off against Maverick when he first comes back home and their scenes are so well done. There is a lot of growly words between them.

And Quinn is a riot – when she learns that Maverick and Leighton are giving it a go at a relationship she made me laugh:

“Ohmigod. Ohmigod. Oh. My. God,” my sister mutters under her breath, eyes even wider. “Clay,” she says with a gasp, reaching out blindly behind her to find him, not looking away from the two of us. “Clayton!” she screams when her hand can’t find him.

“Jesus, Quinn, take a breath,” he grumbles, grabbing her hand before she can slap him.

    “It’s happening,” she breathes.

“You are the weirdest person in the world,” Leigh says, laughing.

I highly recommend this one. Maverick, with his southern drawl and all his “darlin’s” and his Stetson and dusty boots are going to make you swoon. And Leighton is such a fun heroine. Dying for Quinn’s book.

REVIEW: Lost Rider by Harper Sloan

    by Samantha | May 5, 2017 | Review |

Book CoverSammy’s review of Lost Rider (The Coming Home, Book 1) by Harper Sloan
Contemporary Western Romance published by Pocket Books 25 Apr 17

I have a deep abiding love for Westerns. Contemporary or Historical, I will give that book a chance. It’s the Cowboy factor for me. The tip of their brim, the “yes, ma’am,” the broken-in jeans hugging all the right places, could be the twang, and quite possibly all of the above. Harper Sloan dropped me into Texas and I could actually smell those bluebonnets and I actually wanted some pie and I hate pie! What I loved most about this book is that saga feeling. The meatiness of the story reminds me of the Travis books by Lisa Kleypas.

Maverick Davis is a bull rider. One of the best bull riders to be exact. After his last ride and being thrown so many times, his doctor urged him to find a new way of life. All Mav ever thought about was getting off his family’s ranch and riding. Maverick has an older brother, Clay, a younger sister, Quinn, and a mean drunk bastard of a father. Their mother ran away with a cowboy and never looked back. There are so many layers to this family’s dynamics it makes an onion look like an orange. Maverick has been spending his time in a drunken stupor, when he gets the call that his father is dead and he needs to come home. This is the last thing he needs right now, especially that he didn’t leave on the best of terms. Not so much with his siblings. But with the girl next door whose ranch borders the Davises’.

Leighton James thought the stars and the moon paled in comparison to Maverick. At a young age she spent a lot of time with the Davis clan, but her heart was deeply rooted to Maverick. In the last ten years that Maverick has been gone, she lost both parents in a car accident, opened up Piehole in honor of her mom, and she remained very close to Quinn and Clay, even taking care of their ailing father when she could – always with Maverick in the back of her mind and deeply rooted in her heart, but also understanding why he had to leave. Unfortunately, Mav also thought the best way to break it off clean was to completely break Leighton’s heart and, boy, did he ever.

Ms. Sloan does a superb job of switching between the past and the present at the beginning of the book. There is no doubt how much these two people truly care for one another. Leighton is the calm and safety in Maverick’s life and Maverick being Leighton’s everything. There is so much family drama to unload and it’s dark and ugly. Maverick is grumpy and quite often an asshole, but he has so many layers that is so well written that you know without a doubt there’s that goodness deep down that Leighton fell in love with. It’s just buried under bruises, lies, and a sense of not belonging.

Leighton has a great relationship with Quinn and the woman who works with her at the Piehole. With all the doom and gloom, they are a breath of fresh air and downright funny. They are Leigh’s support. The whole community as well. That’s another thing I love about this book. I’m sure in real life having everyone and their grandmother in on your business is a pain in the ass, but it works for me in my book world. There is not one word that is wasted on the page, every sentence and paragraph building a world that grabs you by your heartstrings and doesn’t let go.

“Yes, my hooha, as you so lovingly put it, is most definitely broken. Even I can’t get it to work because HE BROKE IT!” She starts laughing just as I finish. I should have known I would regret telling her all of that. She holds her hand up when it becomes clear that she can’t control her hilarity and just points behind me. I spin. Then die. “Now, I highly doubt I broke anything, but I would be more than willin’ to check, darlin’.” Oh, my God. Kill me now.”

Maverick makes it back for the funeral and he has a lot to make up for. Not only to his family but Leighton as well. When you read about their young love, you can feel it all the way to your toes, So when he strolls into that church and mistakes Leighton for a stranger and Clay’s girlfriend, the fireworks begin. Leighton is no longer that shy, unsure-of-herself sixteen year old. Leigh knocks him off his boots. The truth of the matter is they never stopped loving each other. That’s what makes this book so special. This book is 400 pages or so and I could have read another 400.

“It feels like heaven. That was the last thing I thought before a peace unlike anything I had ever felt washes over me and I fall asleep in his arms, the loneliness that had been dragging me down for so long lifting with each beat of his heart under my ear.”

Maverick sets out to win Leighton back and come to terms with his ghosts. Boy, oh boy, he doesn’t disappoint. Family secrets, dysfunction, abuse, love, second chances, and two characters who will forever take up space in your heart and in your mind. This is one of those books that you will re-read again and again. Everything I love about romance books in general is between these pages. That feeling when you read the very last page and take a moment to take it all in and sigh. That’s this book. Epic and timeless.

    Genre: Fiction, Contemporary Romance
    Release Date: December 19th 2017

New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan returns with the third in her sultry, Western-set Coming Home series, in which the eldest Davis sibling Clay may have finally met his match—but will he be able to give up the solitary, quiet life he’s built in the name of love?

As the eldest of the Davis clan, Clayton has always tried to lead by example. Along with taking his job as head of the family business seriously, he is also determined to keep his brother and sister in line. Clay is known for being serious, silent, and stoic—completely in control of his life. And with the way he grew up, coupled with a disastrous end to the last relationship he was in, he’s just fine with his quiet, solitary life.

What he hadn’t counted on was Caroline Michaels. She’s the proverbial woman next door—the town next door, that is. Caroline hasn’t lived an easy life, but after escaping from an abusive relationship, she’s finally living for herself and no one else. The last thing the quirky, shy bookstore owner expected was a steamy one-night stand with Clay Davis.

When Caroline and Clay meet, the connection is instant, both falling into one heated night of passion before parting ways—both driven by their own reasons to deny what they clearly wish didn’t have to end. It isn’t until Caroline falls on hard times and Clay comes back into the picture that they realize just how impossible it will be to stay away from each other.

Will Clay be able to give up his rootless existence in favor of finally settling down? And, more important, will Caroline want him to?

    Megan’s Review

“No one can hurt me if I don’t let them have the power to do it. Which means I’m better off alone.”

Well… I do love me some Cowboys and Harper Sloan has fast become my go to girl to give me my fix. But seriously though, I have adored this series from the very first book and have waited with baited breath for Clay’s story. There was just something that always intrigued me about him and I just knew Harper would pull out all the stops to deliver his story better than expected. Even though I have loved all the books in the Coming Home series, if I had to choose one, I would probably say Cowboy Up is my favorite.

Clay is the eldest of the Davis siblings and hence a lot of responsibility rests on his shoulders. He has always been the one to take care of the other Davis clan, the family business, he takes his responsibilities seriously. Poor, serious and moody Clay has not had the easiest of lives and history with past relationships and as a result has become quite the loner, but that’s ok because he likes to be by himself. He works too hard and has no time or the inclination for a relationship, until now that is…

Caroline has not had the easiest of lives either. She has had to pack up and leave due to her ex, but this mammoth move was made easier thanks to her two best friends. Now is her chance to live her life for herself and no one else. What she wasn’t counting on though was a steamy one night stand with dark cowboy named Clay.

“I’m not ready to let the woman in my arms go. I’ve never felt this connected to someone. I felt it the first time I had her in my arms, ignored it, but I won’t make that mistake again. I’m sick of living a shadow of a life because I let my fucked-up past cloud my way toward some sort of normal future. Even if nothing comes of this, I’m going to try.”

The attraction and intense chemistry between Clay and Caroline was instant and I just knew this was the beginning of something beautiful. After their initial one night of passion they went their separate ways, but I read with anticipation for fate to step in and bring these two back together again.

I absolutely loved this series and to say I’m sad that it has ended is a massive understatement. Harper Sloan sure knows how to draw you in with her plot, humor, steam, emotion, romance and let’s not forget those broody sexy cowboys that she creates that I just can’t help but fall in love with.

If you’re anything like me and love your possessive and sexy cowboys that will make you swoon beyond all belief, then look no further than Cowboy Up, book three in the Coming Home series. Each story can be read as a stand-alone, so be sure to check it out… you know you want to 🙂

    Book Excerpt:

I push my hands from his shoulders and palm his jaw as his stubble prickles against my fingers while my hands wander up to his hair. His hat falls to the ground with a thud and I know he’s just as lost in me as I am in him, because he doesn’t even make a move to pick it up. He lets out a deep grunt when I mold myself against his body, seeking some sort of friction. The next thing I know, my back is against the door and he’s gripping my bottom. His mouth hits my jaw with a bite of his teeth, making a squeak of pleasure shoot up my throat, and his deep rumble of laughter reaches my ears as he presses me harder into the door with his hips. The heavy bulge of his erection against that spot makes me so desperate for him that I whimper in relief when his mouth finally closes over mine in a wet tangle of tongues.

I’ve never been kissed so thoroughly.

This is the kind of kiss that sets the bar for any that might follow.

The kind that shows you everything you’ve been missing and everything you never knew you wanted. I’m going to be comparing every kiss I ever have to my dark cowboy’s, even though I know there’s a good chance no one will ever compare. The sounds coming from my mouth, the ones being swallowed by his, are nothing short of needy. My hips move in tandem with the thrusts of his, and even though we’re both fully clothed, I know it won’t take much more of this for me to go off like the town’s fireworks on the Fourth of July.

“Fuck, you taste just like apple pie,” he whispers against my lips, breaking away with a gasp.

    “Huh?”

“Goddamn, I love apple pie,” he says before his mouth is back on mine, this time with a whole new kind of hunger deepening his kisses.

I’m held captive, enraptured. Then his hands move from my bottom to glide up my torso. He lifts his hard chest off mine and suddenly those delicious fingers are at my breasts. Even if I had big boobs his hands would dwarf them, I’m sure, but as it is he covers both with a firm grasp before adjusting his hold with a deft twist of the wrists. His mouth continues to feast on mine while his huge hands learn my body with slow movements. I tear my mouth from his with a breathy moan when he pushes my shirt up and slips his fingers into the cups of my bra to tweak my nipples.

“Oh, God,” I moan when he does it again.

“I can’t get enough of you,” he rumbles.

“Please,” I beg, not with the slightest clue as to what I’m begging for.

His hips dig even harder into mine as he leans back, supporting me against the door with that connection alone as he pulls my shirt off. The darkness makes me feel more confident than I normally would be, almost half naked with a man—no, a stranger.

“Yours too,” I tell him as his fingers move to unclasp my bra. “I want to feel your skin on mine,” I breathe, taking over the task so he’ll hopefully give me what I want.

I fumble in my haste to feel more of this dangerous arousal he’s creating in my body, but the second my bra is free and dangling toward the floor, his naked chest collides against mine, pushing me into the door with a force that sends the air rushing out of my lungs.

His mouth hits my collarbone at the same time his hands grasp my bottom, sliding me up the door until I feel the wet heat of his breath against my breast.

    Then he stops.

Favorite Quote: “I knew it was time to cowboy up the second my good girl gave me her bad and together we made magic.”

The third and final book in this trilogy featuring the Davis siblings – and I licked up this book like it was made from sugar. Listen – it’s sappy. It’s over the top in the emotional department. There is insta love and an over protective hero and a sibling relationship that is – over the top. But it’s the book I needed this holiday season!! I adored the first two books in this series, and this one just made me feel squishy happy and I’m sad we are done with this family but I look forward to more from this author. I had never read her before I picked up book one, and she makes me happy with her grumpy, grunty heroes…

“Pleasure,” I rumble, my voice just as thick as my cock.

…and heroines who make me smile.

Clay Davis is that grumpy and grunty hero. He wears a Stetson low on his head. He runs his family’s ranch. Once a womanizer, he is done with sleeping around. He watches his brother and sister find the love of their lives and realizes that he may be missing out. One night while having a drink at the local bar, a woman sits next to him – and there is an instant flirtation.

This woman is our heroine, Caroline. Getting out of a super controlling relationship, and having that same ex still harassing her with phone calls, Caroline drives the short distance back to her hometown for a drink at a bar, which one of her best friends owns. Caroline has a small, very close-knit group of friends that are also her family. Estranged from her mother, Caroline owns a bookstore and lives above it. When she plops herself down on the bar stool, her best friend vouches for the cowboy sitting next to her, but she doesn’t know his name and she can’t really see his face with his Stetson so low. But she notices his long fingers, and muscled thighs. Caroline is a bit shy, but for some reason, this low talking cowboy gets her going

    “Want to?”

Pulling my eyes from the strangely erotic sight of his hand, I look toward his shadowed face.

    “Want to what?”

    “Be bad, sugar.”

Heat hot as fire washes over me with his words. Holy cow. My jaw works, but words elude me. I don’t even know this man’s name, let alone anything about him, and if my rusty knowledge of flirting is right, he just propositioned me. Why I find that as hot as I do, I’ll never know, but before I even know what’s happening, my brain finally figures out how to get the words past my shocked jaw.

    “I think I do.”

She ends up in a motel room with him. After sex in the dark, a shower in the dark (do people really shower together in the dark??) and this cowboy leaving before the sun comes up, Caroline has no idea who rocked her world that night. But she is sated and content.

When a fire erupts in her store, and burns down her apartment above as well, she is devastated. Moving in with her best friend from her hometown, she runs into Clay Davis – and he runs into her – and she realizes he is the one she slept with! They know each other from years earlier, and Caroline is close with his sister and sister in-law. Clay sees her again and knows he can’t let her go a second time. They basically fall in love immediately and I was there for it.

The rest of the book is a lot to do with Clay’s brother and sister, as they are both expecting babies and there are a lot of emotions. The siblings are VERY close. They have deep talks all the time – like when Maverick is terrified about his wife giving birth and Clay is there for him….

“I won’t be able to move on if I lose her,” he continues, completely ignoring my attempt at lightening the mood and I realize just how much this has been weighing on him.

“Maverick,” I hiss through the thickness in my own damn throat and pull my brother into my arms. His own come around me with bruising force.

“Can’t talk to her about this shit, Clay. I don’t want her worryin’ about it when she should be focusin’ on all the happy shit, but it’s tearin’ me apart just thinkin’ about losing her.”

    “Fuck, brother.”

Clay doesn’t think he ever wants kids, and Caroline is not sure she can be with a man who doesn’t want a family – don’t worry – it gets settled pretty fast. There isn’t a ton that happens in this book, as Clay and Caroline are basically in love by the half way point. But it held my interest. Since book one, I’ve been invested in this family so spending time with the siblings and their drama with having babies made me very happy. It would probably be best not to read this as a stand alone so you can experience all of the family dynamics leading into this book.

There is some ridiculous suspense at the end which I could have lived without. But we get a lovely epilogue and then another epilogue and it made my heart smile. Damn it.

I had so much fun reading this series. Totally escapism, which I need now and then.

Clayton Davis is the eldest sibling of the Davis clan. He takes his job seriously and works hard to provide the ranch with expert management. They own an auto repair shop as well and it keeps his sister and brother busy. Clay grew up in a disastrous life and likes his solitary life just fine.

Things change when the owner of the closest bookstore, Caroline Michaels, hooks up with Clay for a one-night stand and they can’t forget the experience. Caroline has an abusive ex-husband and doesn’t want another relationship as yet. When she loses her bookstore to fire and ends up rescued by Clay, she finds her feelings are stronger than she figured.

Both Caroline and Clay are not sure about their feelings or giving up their solitary lives. The story takes an unexpected turn that will bring them closer together. If you like a sexy cowboy story with a lot of sass then COWBOY UP will satisfy you.

After one SERIOUSLY sexy dance at Dirty Dog, these two make a deal that’s mutually beneficial and kills two birds with one stone. They get rid of their exes and thoroughly enjoy each others company. A fake relationship for the public but can that really work in private when these two have such a long standing burning attraction?

It’s hard not to love Nikki. She’s a dedicated teacher and friend. She’s beloved by all the Corps Security families and is seen as one of their own. When she gives, she gives everything. There’s no way that Shane can resist his draw to Nikki with her strong independent streak and her need to please and care for those that she loves. She is the perfect submissive compliment to his dominant nature. After a horrible breakup, Nikki wants to enjoy her life and part of that is indulging her needs with the dirty French talking, sexy hips wiggling bartender. It doesn’t take long for these two to see that what they have isn’t just a simply friendship with some great times burning the sheets. This is more and so much deeper than either expected with a lot more to lose. Suddenly what’s supposed to be fake becomes very real.

Insecurities arise and miscommunication takes its toll not only on Shane and Nikki but on their other friendships as well. Shane is a deep well of secrets and past hurts that demand that he have total control in all areas of his life. But what happens when once, just once, he lets it all go? Can Nikki give everything to Shane and finally have all that she’s ever wanted?

I finished Drunk On You with a smile on my face and immediately flipped back to read the ending another time. Then I flipped back to other scenes in the book that made me want more of Shane’s dominating personality and Nikki’s need for him. This trip to Hope Town has been my favorite so far. This book has a mix of everything that has made Harper one of my favorite go to authors – steamy sexy scenes, sweet heartwarming romance, a leading man that wears his alpha so well and a leading woman who I just had to cheer on as she fought for and then got her man. It was amazing to have Nate and Ember back as they supported their best friends in finding their own happy ending. Let’s not forget Shane’s little sister, Liberty. She’s a female version of her brother, strong willed and has deep hurts. I’m so excited to read her story on my next visit to Hope Town.

We may have been disappointed that we didn’t get this book earlier this year, but it was definitely worth the wait. My hat’s off to Harper and the absolutely divine Shane Kingston! Don’t miss this one. FANTASTIC, Harper!

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I’m a broken man. A broken man with too much darkness in his soul to ever let her light shine upon me. But even that doesn’t stop me from craving her with every single breath in my body.

**This is the final book in the Corps Security series. This book is not suitable for younger readers. There is strong language, adult situations, and some violence.*

    I love Maddox Locke!!!

I really loved this book and I really love Maddox Locke. He’s such a great person, and such an alpha male that it makes swoon.

Locke stars with him finding Emmy in Florida and where he finds her just makes you have to read the book. Chapter 1, is Emmy’s past, and how she grew up, and what she had to endure in her childhood. You don’t realize that she’s a tortured soul and it makes you see her in a different light. Chapter 2 is Maddox’s past, and how he lost his leg and what his childhood was like when he was younger. And let me tell you that when you find out, it makes you want to cry, cut a bitch, and hug Maddox for a long time.

I don’t know if you remember in “Cooper” when, Asher and Chelcie had a “family dinner” after her ordeal, and Emmy flashes on Maddox, well if you don’t then re-read the book :), but if you do, they mention the follow up to what happens, and it’s just so heartbreaking/felt that again, you get emotional and just want to hug them.

There is so much to say about this book, and I don’t want to give the whole thing away, but all I know is that I HIGHLY recommend reading this book, and even the series. You will fall in love with Maddox Locke and all the CS boys (Sway included), that you won’t regret it. (oh, btw…MINE!!! I claimed him). Maddox was such wonderful ending to the Corps Security series, and the very last chapter was such a great way to introduce Cohen Cage and Dani Reid’s story…it’s going to be interesting to say the least.

    About Harper Sloan

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City.

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn’t take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.

    REVIEW: Cage by Harper Sloan

    JaneD ReviewsContemporary / domestic abuse / law-enforcement / self-published11 Comments

    Dear Ms. Sloan:

This book was recommended on the basis that it was in the vein of Kristen Ashley. I avoided the first book because many reviews indicated that the heroine was weak and somewhat twee, spending her time being held by all the big handsome men in her life while she weeped. Not my thing.

The male protagonist is Greg Cage, a big security professional, who lost his sister to a domestic abuser. The story opens with Greg having sex with a “bitch” named Amanda. Greg treats this person cruelly. While he bills himself as super protective and caring about women, it’s only a certain type of woman that is deserving of that type of treatment.

This is how Greg views himself:

Some of us are put on this earth to heal, to make others’ lives brighter, and when those people don’t want our help, our love? We feel it deep.

Yet this is how he treats the woman he has sex with in the first chapter.

Why do I put up with this bitch? Oh, that’s right, because if I wait any longer to get some, my dick will shrivel off. “Amanda,” I roar her full name. “Hear me right now. You do not get to sit here and sling that shit. My sister calls and I’m done. Get that now, if you ever plan on revisiting my bed.”

“You’re done? Your dick is still hard,” she shrieks at me.

I don’t have to look down to know that my dick is screaming at me to finish. I reach down and caress my balls, trying unsuccessfully to ease the ache that is coiling in my gut. Fuck… I need this so bad.

“Babe. I don’t have time to take my time. You want to finish? Fine, but it will be hard and fast.”

This feeling of not helping is new to me. For the last almost five years, I have been the rock, the go to, the strength to help, and it almost makes me feel like I am doing something that would make Grace proud of me. Something better than all those years that I spent wasting away, living off booze, and whores on the road.

Cage’s attitude toward Amanda is stomach churning. He is so mean to her and why? Because she opens her legs to him. She pursues him avidly and doesn’t take no for an answer. Why should she? He goes from sticking his fingers in the female protagonist’s sex on a dance floor to punishing Amanda by boning Amanda in the back room. Mandy is clearly mentally unbalanced but instead of treating this as a serious concern worthy of someone’s “help” she’s referenced as thus:

I don’t care what happens to the bitch, but according to him, she is back on her meds and seeking help. ‘Back on the meds’ should have been clue enough that she really is a psycho bitch. Maybe next time, she will keep up with those damn pills. All that matters is he says that she won’t be a problem, and I believe him.

I took from this that a person who may take medication (such as a person who is bipolar, depressed, manic, etc) is a psycho. I found this just one of many distressing characterizations. Probably the worst, though is Sway.

Sway is the only gay character in the book and his depiction is over the top and stereotypical of a certain type of gay (none that I’ve ever encountered). He’s constantly making lewd comments about all the assets of the Corps Security. He dresses in skin tight pants and shirts. He calls people “darlin’.” In one scene he is painting the sidewalk in front of the security offices in gold glitter and throws the glitter onto these men. Sway has no role within the book other than to be the comic relief. He is in two scenes, one going crazy over a baby and this one where he is painting the sidewalk in glitter and throwing it on the hot men of the Corps Security.

A clear sign of my distraction is my missing Sway’s presence when I pull up at Corps Security. I am busy picturing Melissa bent over my kitchen counter, but when I look up and see Swag waving like an idiot, the hard on I have been sporting all morning dies a quick death.

    What the fuck?

Over the last few years that I have known this man, I have learned he is as unpredictable as they come. But the sight that meets me this morning is like nothing he has ever done before. There he is, standing on the sidewalk wearing those camouflage skintight pants things that chicks wear. The ones that make a man fall all over himself to follow her ass around the world, but on this man, they might scar me for life. If that isn’t enough, the sparkling burgundy shirt hugging his round stomach might get a good laugh. Then, I notice what he is doing.

“Sway? Why are you painting the sidewalk?” I question, looking down into the bucket of golden shining paint, “Is that fucking glitter?”

“Don’t you start with all your alpha hotness, Gregory. Of course, this is glitter! You can’t paint the sidewalk gold without glitter!” He’s serious, bobbing his head left and right, and waving his hands all over the place.

“This is for real? You’re painting the sidewalk fucking gold? Does Axel know about this shit?”

“Of course he does, my king of hotness. Don’t be such a tight ass. Actually, never mind that darlin’, be a tight ass… just let me see it.” He starts laughing like a loon and all I can do is look around and notice the explosion of fucking glitter.

“Sway, my man, you wouldn’t know what to do with me.” He sobers instantly and I kick myself for encouraging him. “Forget I said that. Tell me why you feel the need to throw glitter all over the damn place?”

“Because my hunk of fine, glitter makes everyone happy!” When he starts dancing around his paint bucket, I have to leave. There is only so much Sway that I can handle when he is acting like this. I might joke, but that man is the funniest little shit I have ever met.

The second Coop steps out of the out of the jeep, Sway attacks, throwing glitter in the air and screaming ‘good morning’. When he leaps into Coop’s arms, I fear I might hurt something, laughing as hard as I am.

The plot is essentially Melissa and Cage dealing with “psycho”, learning to overcome the loss of their sisters to the same domestic abuser, and learning to trust each other. As for the romance between Cage and Melissa, there mutual lust was apparent but even with their similarities (and crazy coincidences) I didn’t really understand why they loved each other. Their animal attraction was the primary driver of their connection for so much of the story and the love rested almost solely on the fact that they’d both lost someone due to domestic violence. But the love? I have no idea what the one loved about the other outside of the bedroom activities.

There are a lot of references to sad women and the other men in the Corps Security group and how their love for each other is kept unconsummated through some secret angst. These scenes were awkwardly inserted throughout the story in a very repetitive manner. Cage would see one of the ladies looking distressed and the corresponding Corps Security would be either destroying their office or stomping around tragically unhappy. Cage’s heart would hurt for all involved. I guess because unrequited love is not psycho and therefore worthy of his big heart.

I know I’m supposed to see Melissa as this awesome chick who stands up for herself and takes care of herself, her mom, and her nephew; yet Melissa spends every night at Cage’s house and Cohen, the nephew, makes only a few appearances. Given that Melissa was essentially her nephew’s mother since Melissa’s sister died, her inattention to Cohen seemed weird and only served to enforce that Melissa was more interested in physical pleasure than anything else. There’s nothing wrong with that, but Melissa was supposed to be this awesome self sacrificing heroine who was taking up the yoke of motherhood. The showing never matched the telling.

Finally, Melissa’s treatment toward Mandy was disturbing. Yes, Mandy slashed Melissa’s tires but Melisssa’s constant references to Mandy as “demented” and “fucking nuts” and “psycho bitch” just served to reinforce this idea that those who suffer from a mental illness are somehow lesser. I’m sure that this isn’t what I was supposed to take away from the book. I know I was supposed to see Mandy as the villain because she kept trying to interfere with Cage and Melissa and became increasingly unstable and dangerous, but Mandy was written with such a heavy hand (with her fake tits and her complete lack of self esteem and her wild eyes) that I couldn’t help but feeling sorry for her. The insults thrown Mandy’s way actually distressed me rather than made me want to cheer Melissa.

This book has received glowing reviews and maybe there’s a story here I didn’t see but the characters’ actions as written revealed a completely different set of individuals than the reader was told existed. D

    Best regards,

    Jane

A few months ago I read Lost Rider, the first book in this series and fell for this author’s voice. She reminds me a bit of the way Kristen Ashley writes – and I like it. This series focuses on four siblings – two brothers and a sister, and the sister, Quinn gets her HEA in this one in a second chance at love trope.

Quinn is a car mechanic – it has been her passion her entire life. Some may call her a tomboy but she argues that while she likes to be under cars, she is still all woman. One thing people don’t argue about is her fiery attitude. Quinn holds nothing back – whether it is full on laughing, or full on arguing with her brothers, she is full of passion and life.

Years ago, she met and fell in love with Tatum Montgomery. Tate would come to Pine Oak every summer and stay with his grandparents. His wealthy and snobby parents back home expected great things from him – following in the footsteps of his doctor grandfather. Being a doctor was fine with Tate, but not having Quinn in his life was not okay. Over four summers they fell in love. Quinn’s mother abandoned her family long ago, so it took time for Quinn to come to trust Tate, which made it even worse when he was forced to leave. When he told his parents he wanted to go to a college closer to Pine Oaks to be nearer to Quinn, they used their high connections to threaten to destroy her family if he pursued that path. Tortured himself, Tate chose to walk away from Quinn, and hasn’t seen or spoken to her for ten years.

But now Tate’s grandfather has died, and his house is for sale, and Tate is coming back to Pine Oak to take over his practice, no longer under the control of his parents. Both Quinn and Tate have not had a serious relationship all this time – and when he comes back to town, Quinn can barely believe it. She also freaks out:

    Taking over Fisher’s practice.

    Oh. My. God.

I slam on the brakes and stop dead in the middle of the road that Leigh’s drive is off of and stare out the windshield in front of me in horror. Thankfully, no one is traveling behind me.

“Jesus Jones. He’s a gyno,” I moan into the empty cab. “Tatum Montgomery isn’t just a doctor. He’s a lady doctor.”

All then men in this book are so alpha. The amount of growls stack up – and I liked it. Quinn’s two brothers are very protective of her and they do not want Tate waltzing back into town to crush their sister’s heart again. Tate though can handle them, and through a series of grunts they work it out. But Quinn is a spit-fire and her own woman, and while she doesn’t need her brothers approval, she respects them so much she likes to have it. From the get-go, Tate and Quinn are pretty much in love but this set-up worked for me. There isn’t really a conflict – besides the fact they have to trust each other enough to move forward in a serious relationship. Even without conflict, this book was engaging. And fun and sexy. Quinn makes me laugh – she is such a goof. Her best friend Leigh (heroine from book one) and her have the best girlfriend relationship. They are silly, and always there for each other and I loved them together.

    “You’re a hell-raisin’ badass, remember?”

I choke on a laugh, her words warming me from the inside.

“Yeah, I am a hell-raisin’ badass,” I agree through wobbly lips.

“You betcha ass you are. Now what are ya gonna do about it?”

Tate and Quinn have great sexual chemistry in this one. They are so attracted to each other, it’s torture until they finally give in and admit they still love each other and get naked! This whole book has a ramped-up sexual vibe.

“Hello?” he calls, clearly impatient, if his tone is anything to go by.

Shit, I haven’t said a word. I bet I’m breathing heavy. Like a creepy stalker or something.

“Hey,” I squeak, rushing the word out to quiet the panic Inner Quinn is going through.

“Quinn,” he breathes. Literally. He breathes my name in the most sensual way, and I feel it go straight to my gut.

My one complaint is a very small side-story involving a woman Tate is dating when he decides to move to Pine Oak and take over the practice. This woman, while Tate and her had agreed was just casual dating and sex, no strings – wants more and is upset he is moving. I feel like Tate treats her poorly when he decides to move, and later when she shows up in Pine Oak, Quinn treats her poorly too. This woman’s actions in the book, while yes she gets clingy and then shows up unexpectedly on Tate’s doorstep – but those actions didn’t warrant the verbal treatment she got from both Tate and Quinn in my opinion. It rubbed me the wrong way. But it’s a small part of the book – honestly, I don’t even think it needed to be in the book.

Otherwise a really fun and sexy read. I’m loving this author’s voice.

REVIEW: Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan

Posted August 18th, 2017 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, Contemporary Romance, Cowboy Romance, Review / 4 comments

Kiss My Boots by Harper Sloan Quinn Davis has only loved one man in her life: Tate Montgomery. He may have disappeared nine years ago, but she’s held herself back from getting attached to anyone else. When he reaches out to have her auto shop work on his vehicle, Quinn can’t believe it.

Tate didn’t want to leave Quinn years ago, but he had no choice. Now he’s back in town, taking over his grandfather’s position as the town’s gynecologist and he’s determined to win Quinn back.

I liked how determined Tate was to convince Quinn that he was going to fight for their relationship. He even takes the initiative to speak with Quinn’s protective brothers to let them know his intentions. He proves, through everything he does, that he’s not going to take off on her again.

I also admired how strong Quinn was. From having a poor excuse of a father , having a mother who abandoned her family, and a brother who took off for years before returning, she doesn’t let it get her down. Instead she faces all her issues head-on. Even though giving Tate another chance scares her, she’s willing to do it. And despite Maverick’s hesitation, she demands to confront their mother so she could have closure.
==”I felt sorry for her because she left. She left and because of that she missed this,” she says, lifting her hand and pointing between the three of them. “She’ll never know what a strong man her eldest son is, how he protects us and worries about us like a parent and not a brother. She won’t get a chance to know the proud and courageous man her middle son is. How he beat all the odds to take back the life he wanted. And, well…she won’t know me. So yeah, I feel bad, because in my book, we have the whole world together and she’s got nothin.”==

I haven’t read the first book in the series, Lost Rider, which is about Quinn’s brother Maverick and her best friend, Leighton. There are references to Maverick’s leaving and return in this book, as well as some past tension between Quinn and Maverick, but it doesn’t go into detail. I’m curious enough about what happened and how Quinn and Maverick became close again that I’m planning on going back to read Maverick’s book. That being said, while it made me curious about their relationship, it didn’t take away from this book at all so I feel this can be read as a standalone.

Kiss My Boots is about second chances and family bonds. If you enjoy second chance stories in a small town western setting, you may want to check this one out.

Quinn Davis prefers to live her life quietly. She’s the stereotypical tomboy with two overprotective big brothers who have always been there to protect her, especially from devilishly handsome cowboys with silver tongues. That is, until Tate Montgomery comes riding into town. Their first meeting, however, is far from something out of a fairy tale and only further convinces Quinn that men aren’t worth her time.

The only place Tate Montgomery ever truly felt at home growing up was during the long, sweltering summer months he spent at his Gram and Paw’s farm in Pine Oak, Texas. Now, Tate has returned to his childhood sanctuary seeking a fresh start—but if he’s being entirely honest, he’s not just back for the wranglers and Stetsons. During those summers, Quinn was a friend-turned-young-love who Tate lost when life threw him a curveball and he cut all ties to his past; but all it takes is one glance at the raven-haired beauty he did his best to forget for him to realize just how much he’s been missing….

KISS MY BOOTS by Harper Sloan is the second book in the Coming Home series and a romantic Western. This book is all about second chances, do overs, mending broken hearts and correcting the wrong that was done while growing up.

Sometimes things seem good at the time but you look back and realize what you have done wrong. Some people just choose the wrong path and live a life with regrets. I like how this book is full of hope, faith and the courage to correct your wrongs. The main characters are Quinn (Maverick's sister from the first book in the series) and Tate who is returning home after leaving many years ago.

The two shared many summers together in Pine Oaks, Texas growing up from the time they were eleven years old. They were inseparable until they each turned eighteen. While they both had different family lives, their friendship grew into love becoming even more intense as they grew older. This first love they shared was full of promises and hope. Then one-day Tate just up and left without an explanation or goodbye for Quinn. The unexpected leaving of Tate caused Quinn's heart to break and left her devastated. Can nine years apart cool down this intense love they once shared or will it only ignite the flames?

Sloan writes with such a creative and unique way that makes you want to visit Pine Oak, Texas. The setting is well thought out and together with the plot line it makes for a romantic summer read. You can easily read this book as a stand-alone because it features different characters with a truly romantic story line and a hint of western flair that we all love. I really enjoyed reading KISS MY BOOTS. I look forward to reading more from Harper Sloan and the Coming Home series.

    Kiss My Boots
The Coming Home Series Book 2

"Kiss My Boots" is so different from the other stuff I have read from Harper Sloan. Take note, I have read just about everything she has put out. This sexy sweet read was a nice change of pace. This is the second book in the Coming Home Series but I was able to read this without any problems or feeling lost since I hadn't read the first book. The first one is "Lost Rider". I wasn't sure how she was going to make her cowboys as alpha and sexy as her other characters like Axel, but I’m happy to say that she did it well. Tate was Quinn's teenage love, but nine years ago something happened that tore them apart. I'm happy to say that Harper knows how to do second chance romance just as good as she does her sexy alphas.
Book Blurb for Kiss My Boots

In this second of the sultry, Western-set Coming Home series from New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan, Quinn Davis might finally have a shot at her own happily-ever-after—but will she let love in, or will she tell it to go ahead and kiss her boots?

A STARLET REVIEW: PERFECTLY IMPERFECT BY HARPER SLOAN

    Synopsis:
Mirror, mirror ... who's the fairest of them all?

I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn't grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all 'mean girls.'

And those mean girls were right - it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world - and I knew the answer would never be me.

The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.

The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.

Well, that's definitely not Willow Tate.

No. That will never be me.

    Because I'm completely imperfect.

    And ... I hate myself.

I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

    “Are you nervous right now?”

    I nod.

“Tell me why.” His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him. To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.

    “I’m not perfect,” I whisper.

“And neither am I, Willow. I don’t want perfect. What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake. Perfect isn’t achievable naturally. No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”

I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.

“No, let me finish. There isn’t beauty in perfection. It’s as fake as the image the word projects. Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute. When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better. To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there. You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”

When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing. How am I supposed to respond to that?

“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.

“Yes, Kane. Nerves or not, I do.”

“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”

He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of. His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue. I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system. I’m all in.

    My Review

Okay, I admit it.. This cover SOLD me before I even knew the premise of this story. It’s so beautiful and unique and now that I’ve finished PI- it’s absolutely the perfect representation of this story. Broken beauty that may not seem perfect to everyone but to my eyes- it is.

Willow is going through a nasty divorce. Broken hearted, discouraged, unhappy with her ownself, and feeling really unattractive- she swears she’ll never open her heart again. Then she meets Kane, a famous bachelor who every woman is swooning over. She believes she could never catch the eye of a man like Kane but she feels an immediate pull to him.
Kane isn’t the kind of man to settle down. After running into the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen, Kane is smitten with everything about Willow. He knows she’s not ready for a man like him but he has his sights set on making her his.

I truly believe we all have a little Willow in us. I felt for her.. I felt like I was her… I sympathized her pain because I’ve felt that inadequacy.. What is perfect anyways? Who defines perfection? Maybe we all have a little perfect in us, it just takes the right person to bring it out. Kane saw that in Willow.. He just had to get her to believe it herself.

This story is made for woman to read. Harper has stated a huge part of herself is in this book and when you read it, you feel that. The personal importance of Willow’s voice is something truly special that you don’t read often. This (IMO) is Harper’s best work. It’s not just another romance- it’s a life lesson.

“There isn’t beauty in perfection. It’s as fake as the image the word projects. Beauty is found in imperfection.”

Jaded Hearts (Loaded Replay #1) by Harper Sloan
    petra's reviews

Signing with Brighthouse Records was supposed to be everything we ever wanted—our better life. Our chance at everything we never had but always wanted. All our dreams would finally come true and we were on top of the world. It was our chance at the happiness we never had in life.

Our every desire was at our fingertips and the power of that feeling was all consuming. But then it took every dream we thought would come true and it slapped us in the face with the cold hard reality.

Dreams were just that…something that floated on the cusp of untouchable, taunting you with every graze of your fingertips before slipping even further away.

    Happiness…that feeling is a joke.

In the end it became painfully obvious that each of us would always have each other, but we would forever be alone.

I must be completely oblivious because I didn’t realize that this book was about Chase. In case you were just as clueless as I was, or it’s been a while since you’ve read the Hope Town series, Chase was charged with protecting Dani in Unexpected Fate, which is also where he first came across Loaded Replay and fell a little bit in love with Wrenlee.

Of course Chase works for Corps Security, which is a nice tie in to all the guys we already know and love, while still allowing this series to stand on its own. I really liked Chase. He was pretty intense and focused on keeping Wren safe from all the crazies that surround an ultra successful rock band. And there are a lot of them…

The connection that Wren had with the rest of the band was what you’d expect from a group of siblings and that came across well in the writing. I really expected the neglectful and jealous parents to be more of an issue in the book so it was a pleasant surprise that it never came up other than as background filler. There also wasn't a lot of groupie angst in this book although you definitely got a realistic impression of band life. I did briefly think Harper might have lost the thread of the original reason Chance was brought into the group as security. But, she looped it back in seamlessly towards the end with a plausible explanation for why it appeared it had been forgotten when nothing else threatened Wren after Chase had been hired.

I will definitely be looking for the follow up books in this series.

A STARLET REVIEW: BLEEDING LOVE BY HARPER SLOAN

    Synopsis:

I've loved once. I gave everything that I had to that love. Blindly believing that nothing could ever take that feeling away from me. Away from us. And when my little world of happiness was ripped from my fingers, I felt a loss that still haunts me to this day.

Now I use that lingering grief as a shield to keep my heart from loving again. It's that fear that keeps me from letting anyone, except my daughter, get close enough to make it hurt. To make my heart bleed when I inevitably lose again.

Until the day I met Liam Beckett and everything I thought I had protected myself from was shoved back in my face.

He's on a mission to prove to me that a love worth having is a love worth fighting for.

His mouth leaves mine and with his hand still on my leg, he demands, “Dig your heels in deep, baby.”

I give him what he wants, but not because he told me to. I give him what he wants because when his hand leaves my leg and pushes into the mattress, bringing his body up he goes even deeper into my body and those heels push hard.

Just as he demanded earlier, my hands go to his shoulders on my own accord and as he takes my body hard, my nails dig in with my heels still pushing hard against the small of his back. Our eyes never leave each other’s probing gaze. Never once do I take my eyes away from his, so full of lust that I know there isn’t an ounce of control left in his body.

He drops his head and I lift up to meet him in a kiss so sweet it doesn’t match the powerful way that he’s taking my body. A kiss that gives me more than words ever could at this moment. His hips slow and as his tongue rolls against mine, his hips start to take me in slow, deep rolls. He doesn’t pull back, just rocks his hips against mine.

I push up and cry out when he slips even deeper.

His lips come from mine and his hooded eyes open a sliver. “Feels like heaven,” he says softly. “Everything, darlin’. Feels like everything.”

    My Review

I’m going to be honest here. It took me a little bit to get into this book. At first I wasn’t sure it was for me, which was surprising because I have thoroughly enjoyed many of Harper Sloan’s other books. However, once I hit 23% I was ALL in and could NOT put my Kindle down. What changed my mind, you ask? Easy…

Liam Beckett. Holy sweet mother of baby Jesus in a manger! Liam “Mothereffing Panty Melting” Beckett. I’m not exaggerating here, y’all. It isn’t every day that a specimen of book boyfriend this perfect comes along. This incredible man is the perfect mix of everything a book boyfriend should be. He is gorgeous, sexy, determined, protective, great with kids, loyal and dear LAWD can he bring it in the sex department. I’m pretty sure he could teach a class on dirty talk, he is such an expert. I haven’t swooned this much in a while. How can I not when he says things like THIS…

“The smell of you, God damn. I thought I was starving for you before. I’m going to eat you until you can’t breathe, Megan. Fucking drown in you.”

Um…yes, please!! And that’s just the teeny, tiny tip of the iceberg!

Ok,now that I’m done swooning and gushing over Liam, here is a little story summary. Liam is a sexy as hell (oops, there I go again!) police officer who has found the perfect woman for him and her name is Megan. Megan is a widowed single mom to an adorable 5 year old little girl named Molly. She has had a really tough life up to this point. I’m talking some seriously bad stuff has happened to this poor woman. As a result, Megan has some major issues about just letting people in, let alone letting someone in enough to fall in love.

Luckily for all of us, Liam is one determined man. He simply refuses to take no for an answer and comes up with a Feel List to make Megan come alive and start living again. Thankfully, Megan finds him as hard to resist as I do and doesn’t hold out for too long. I mean, how could you?? He doesn’t only deliver multiple orgasms, but there is also this happening…

“I’ll say it as many times as you need it, but it won’t change. I’m in love with you. I love you. I love you, Megan-you and Molly. So fucking in love with you that I knew it before you said your first word to me.”

Do I really need to say anymore here?? Get the book, read it, fall in love with Liam and enjoy their story. I promise you will be happy you did! This one is a solid 4 shiny stars for me!

    WhenImWithYou_FrontCover_LoResNate:

It’s nearly impossible to be surrounded by love but not understand it. My parents, my sister, and just about everyone around us has no trouble accepting that love. To give your trust to someone else and believe they would die before hurting you. I’ve witnessed it—I’ve seen the power of it—but I’ve also seen the pain. Because for me, I’ve only loved someone I could never have, and my biggest fear is that by giving her my love, all I would do is ruin her. I should have tried harder, but I’m not sure I can because I only feel complete when I’m with her.

    Emberlyn:

The only time I feel like I belong is when he’s near. His infectious smile warms me straight to my bones. Any insecurities I have vanish with just a wink from him. A sliver of his attention makes me feel invincible. But all it took was one drunken night of truths for me to lose everything I had begun to crave. Now, I’m not sure how to move on because I only feel complete when I’m with him.

He said I was too young. I said he was perfect. He said our families wouldn’t understand. I said we could weather any storm. He said he would ruin me. And he was right.

    Michel’s Review

When I’m With You by Harper Sloan is the third book in the Hope Town Series. Not only is the Hope Town Series a fabulous spinoff of the Corps Security Series, it easily stands on it’s own merit. When I’m With You is my favorite book in the Hope Town series because it features two of my favorite offspring in the Corps Security crew. I also love seeing one of my favorite characters in the Corps Security Series, Maddox Locke, handing over his little girl to another man. Is Nate Reid strong enough to stand up to Maddox Locke and win Emberlyn Locke’s heart?

Nate and Ember have had a special connection even though they are six years apart in age. At the tender age of eighteen Ember finally had the courage to confess her heartfelt feelings to Nate. Rather than embracing Ember’s heart, Nate rejected her confessions of love because of the age difference and he wasn’t ready to settle down in a relationship. This strained their precious friendship and sent it down a new path. Ember gave Nate one more chance at his sister’s wedding but once again Nate fell short of her expectations and this time she’s done.

Three years can make a huge difference in people’s lives. It gave Ember time to grow up, mature, and become a real woman. It gave her the opportunity to study art and pursue a career as an artist. It also gave Nate time to get himself together. He is finally pursuing his professional aspirations and is becoming his own man, not a man that lives in the shadows of Corps Security. He’s reached the point in his life where he’s ready to settle down with one woman. The only woman he wants is Emberlyn Locke and she wants nothing to do with him. She has gone out of her way to avoid him. She has been absent from all of the family functions. He intends to turn it around.

Ember has moved on from Nate. Although she has a boyfriend, he’s not what she wants. He’s turning into someone that she’s beginning to fear. After a heated break-up, Emberlyn is ready to move on.

Nate and Ember are finally getting a chance to make more of their special connection. Everything is happening at warped speed. Nate is busy with his new business and Ember is busy preparing for her art show. They barely have time for one another let alone anything else. As far as Nate is concerned he will make the time for Ember no matter what obstacles stand in his way. He will have to deal with one scary father, a group of meddling family members, and a crazy ex boyfriend. Not a problem, he is Nate Reid, a man to be reckoned with.

I loved Nate and Ember’s story. It was everything I hoped Harper Sloan would give these two dynamic people. It was perfection.

For the record… Nate Reid can put me in time out anytime he pleases. And… I still love daddy dearest, Maddox Locke. These two men make me swoon!
