Under Your Skin and In Your Arms

Shannyn Schroeder is an English teacher turned romance novelist. Her “For Your Love” series follows members of the O’Malley family, and it begins with twenty-two-year-old Norah O’Malley in Under Your Skin. Norah is pregnant, and she decides not to tell her ex-boyfriend that she’s carrying his child. Instead, she returns to her family in Chicago. As soon as she moves back home, Norah meets and falls for Kai, an ex-con and tattoo artist. Kai is reluctant to return Norah’s feelings, not because he doesn’t feel the same way, but because he’s reluctant to love anyone. The best he can do is offer Norah a job as his mother’s caretaker, and he also listens as Norah decides whether or not to give her child up for adoption. Will Kai finally let himself love her, and will they raise Norah’s child together?

Unfortunately, a Publishers Weekly critic announced that the “steamy sex scenes may appease some readers, but this lackluster entry is far from satisfying.” A Kirkus Reviews Online correspondent was far more positive, asserting that “Schroeder has written a warm yet sexy contemporary romance with down-to-earth characters who share an unexpected attraction that turns to fascination, respect, and love.” The correspondent then went on to call Under Your Skin “a surprising, bighearted romance.” As an online Reading Cafe writer put it, “Norah was a great heroine; sweet, fun, beautiful, independent and determined to live her life the way she wants to. . . . This was a very slow build romance, which was also fun watching Norah do all she can to seduce Kai.” The writer added: “Under Your Skin was an enjoyable read . . . I suggest you read this book and join the fun when we get more stories on the O’Malleys.” Offering further applause on the Ever After Web site, a columnist noted that the novel “was a very interesting read. I’m not sure how to describe the book or even how to classify it. I just know that I really enjoyed it.”

Sean O’Malley takes center stage in In Your Arms, and the Chicago native meets his love interest when her car breaks down. After escaping a terrible childhood and periods of homelessness, Emma is working as a kindergarten teacher. Her life is finally on track, and she’s ready for true love, so when Sean pulls over to help her with her car troubles, Emma believes he might be the one. Sparks fly, but Emma soon believes that Sean is too immature to serve as her life partner. Sean admits that he’s a bit rough around the edges, but he’s also willing to grow into the man that Emma needs him to be. Before their romance can progress, both Sean and Emma must face their damaged pasts. Both Emma’s and Sean’s “families are as well drawn and compelling,” Amy Alessio remarked in Booklist. Furthermore, “Schroeder infuses plenty of emotion into this strong love story.” Donna M. Brown, writing in RT Book Reviews, was equally laudatory, declaring that “Schroeder assembles a strong strong cast of characters in this sassy novel about growth and familial dynamics.”

Her Best Shot and His Work of Art

Schroeder’s “Hot & Nerdy” series features intellectual and college students (i.e. nerds) as they meet their matches, usually in an “opposites attract” scenario. Her Best Shot follows math major Layla Sharpe. Layla is a homebody who prefers studying to partying, but it’s her last semester and her friends have convinced her to meet them for a few spring break shenanigans. Layla’s car breaks down on her way there, and she’s stranded at a bar in Georgia while she waits for a tow. There’s a pool shark named Phin Marks at the bar, and the chemistry between him and Layla is off the charts. He offers to give her place to stay while her car is repaired, and as the days mount, it’s clear that the new couple never plans to part.

Unfortunately, an online Slanted Bookshelf reviewer remarked: “This book was most definitely a disappointment. Right from the start Her Best Shot didn’t quite click for me. I felt like I’d been thrown straight into Layla’s life but instead of the author working to make me feel connected I was expected to catch up and know Layla. Yeah, that didn’t quite work for me.” The reviewer then conceded: “Despite all my complaining I didn’t hate the book. I just definitely wouldn’t recommend it or reread it.” On the other hand, an online Dark Faerie Tales writer declared: “I did love this book. It was super cute, and while I am not a fan of instalove, I kind of overlooked it because it was such a good read. I will say I thought it was odd that a girl as smart as Layla would be willing to leave school and make huge life decisions five seconds after meeting a guy.” A Smut Book Junkie Web site correspondent praised Layla and Phin, advising that “these two will be thrown together and find that they are the perfect balance for one another. These two will have to overcome the hurdles that separate their lifestyles. They may go about it the wrong way but when they finally get on the same page it is sizzling hot.”

Reese Carter, the heroine in His Work of Art, prefers game nights to frat parties, and she befriends fellow comics nerd Adam to illustrate the comic she’s been writing. As the pair work on their project, they begin to fall for one another. They flirt over the difference between DC comics and Marvel comics, but Adam is afraid that he’s misreading Reese’s signals. She hired him and she’s technically his boss. If he makes a move, he could lose the best job of his life, and a chance to be around the woman he loves. Adam and Reese are haunted by their respective pasts, and both are afraid to risk another heartbreak. “I would like to have heard more about Adam and Reese’s stories, particularly since what happened to them as children has such a huge impact on them as adults,” an online Hermit Librarian critic commented. “I did enjoy their interactions and their resolution though, as well as the interaction with the other men from the ‘Hot & Nerdy’ series.” Lauding the novel further in the online Book Briefs, a critic observed: “Adam’s roommates are up next, and I can’t wait to check out their story. His Work of Art will have you nerding out over this cute romance.”

    About Shannyn

    shannyn-7Shannyn is an occasional English teacher, who also works as a part-time editor while raising her three kids.

    Even though she wrote from high school through college (mostly poetry), she’d never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused her energy on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. One group in particular dubbed her “The Torture Master,” a title she carried into motherhood.

    After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. She read so many books so quickly that her husband teased, “If you’re going to read so many damn books, why don’t you just write one?”

    So she did.

    That first book is safely buried on her hard drive, but the process set Shannyn on the path to where she is today. The 6-book O’Leary series has wrapped up, as well as 2 Hot & Nerdy new adult trilogies. She’s currently working on her next series.

    She is recovering from her Diet Coke addiction, fears putting her foot in her mouth on social media, and has a renewed appreciation for the bad girls of the world.

    Shannyn is represented by Frances Black of Literary Counsel.

Schroeder continues her For Your Love series, following Under Your Skin (2016), and exemplifies the best of new
adult romance with this realistic and sexy Chicago tale. Emma is a kindergarten teacher determined to have a secure,
steady relationship to erase memories of working in bars with her mother and enduring periods of homelessness. When
her car breaks down, Sean O'Malley rides over on his motorcycle to help her. They start casually dating, enjoying
BBQs and sleeping together until Emma tells him she needs to find a mature, steady man. Sean has gone through three
mechanic jobs in a year and is not sure he can be the trustworthy man Emma wants, though he is willing to try. Emma
knows she has to deal with her insecurities about the past, and the two try to forge a future, even as they cope with
some breakup bumps. Their families are as well drawn and compelling as Emma and Sean, and Schroeder infuses
plenty of emotion into this strong love story.Amy Alessio

Under Your Skin
Shannyn Schroeder. Kensington/Zebra Shout, $4.99 mass market (330p) ISBN 9781420139495
In the middling first entry in Schroeder's For Your Love series, 22yearold Norah O'Malley is pregnant and back home
in Chicago after 10 years away. Although she still hasn't told her exboyfriend that she's pregnant, she's immediately
attracted to someone new: Kai, a quiet but strong excon who owns a tattoo shop. Kai tries to deflect Norah's attention,
even though he feels the sizzling chemistry between them, but Norah won't give up, especially once he offers her a
muchneeded job as a caretaker for his mom. Meanwhile, Norah needs to decide whether she wants to place her baby
for adoption. Kai's small gestures of kindness convince Norah that there is more to him than his gruff exterior, but her
obsession with him, a selfish, nononsense, and sometimes nasty man, is difficult to comprehend. Furthermore, despite
her pronouncements of independence, Norah comes across as passive and immature. Steamy sex scenes may appease
some readers, but this lackluster entry is far from satisfying. Agent: Frances Black, Literary Counsel. (July)

    Shannyn Schroeder’s debut novel proves she knows how to craft a romance. Although the lead characters have great chemistry, the plot is a bit trite for the average reader. Reserved teacher Quinn Adams is unlucky in love, and has always dreamed of having a husband and children. She gives up on finding a man and devises a plan to get pregnant during her summer off. In the meantime, her friends encourage her to complete a list of adventures including a passionate summer romance. Enter handsome bar owner Ryan O’Leary. This new toe-curling, spunky romance series will satisfy fans of slightly messy love stories. The characters are full of fun and passion with an undeniable chemistry. The protective Irish family subplot and realistic sensitive subject
    of adoption was fantastically written.
    Ten years after Norah O’Malley’s father and brothers sent her off to live with her aunt, she’s finally home in Chicago and more alone than ever. She never would have thought she’d walk into a tattoo shop seven months pregnant and find herself blown away by an instant attraction. Kai Ellis is a big guy. Rough, rugged and all together sexy. Of course he has a past, but so does she. Best of all, Kai makes her feel less alone. All the desire in the world can’t make Kai believe in happily ever afters, and it can’t help Norah make the most important decision of her life, but time has a way of changing things in surprising ways. The next installment in the For Your Love series features a damaged girl who is rescued by an even more damaged boy. Schroeder assembles a strong strong cast of characters in this sassy novel about growth and familial dynamics. Highly erotic, In Your Arms is well worth the read and sets the scene for the next chapter, when Sean’s brother Tommy takes centerstage.
    When Emma’s car overheats and she’s stuck on the side of the road, a man on a motorcycle comes to the rescue. Sean O’Malley gives the car a temporary fix and offers to take it to his shop. Reluctant at first, she caves because, on top of being helpful, he’s also quite cute and sexy. Slowly, the kindergarten teacher’s naughty side starts to emerge. Normally, Emma would consider Sean off-limits, but after her horrible day, she’s ready to cut loose. Try as she might, she can’t shake the fireworks exploding between them. KIRKUS REVIEW

    Norah O’Malley, a college student who's seven months pregnant, meets Kai Ellis, her brother’s boss, at his tattoo parlor and is stunned by the immediate attraction she feels. But when he offers her a job as a companion to his ailing mother, Norah and Kai both find that it may be time for some life changes.

    Ten years ago, Norah's family sent her from Chicago to Boston to live with an aunt; her mother had died when she was a baby, and when her oldest brother, Jimmy, joined the Army, he thought she'd be better off living with Bridget. While Boston never felt like home, she was not quite sure she was welcome in her father’s house, either. Now she's back in Chicago, since Aunt Bridget threw her out when she got pregnant, but her father’s hardly a font of wisdom, and her four brothers are too busy being angry at the father of her baby—who doesn’t know about it yet—to give her any help or practical advice. So when she meets Kai, who owns a tattoo parlor and has a criminal record, she jumps at his offer of a job as a companion to his mother, who's recovering from knee surgery. Kai is sexy as sin and a fierce loner, and Norah senses that his bark is worse than his bite; coming from an angry, overprotective family, she also appreciates that, having made his own mistakes, he’s pretty silent and nonjudgmental about other people’s. As she spends more time at his house, their quiet attraction grows, and Kai discovers that his highly compartmentalized life might be made better through outreach and that Norah has somehow made him feel like that's not only possible, but positive. Schroeder has written a warm yet sexy contemporary romance with down-to-earth characters who share an unexpected attraction that turns to fascination, respect, and love as they help each other through big life choices.

    A surprising, bighearted romance.

    Description:
    Blood Is Thicker Than Ink. . .

    Norah O’Malley has been alone for a long time. It’s been ten years since her father and four brothers shipped her off to be raised by her aunt. Seven months since she’s seen the guy who got her pregnant–who still doesn’t know. And it’s two weeks since she came home to Chicago and discovered none of her family wants to talk–or listen.

    She never expected to walk into a tattoo shop seven months pregnant and get her socks knocked off by instant attraction. She can’t even see her socks. But Kai Ellis is big and gruff and sexy as hell, and if he has a past, well, so does she. Even more, Kai knows how to listen so that Norah feels just a little less alone . . .

    All the chemistry in the world can’t help Norah make her decisions. And no sizzle of desire will make Kai believe in happy endings. But a little time with someone who understands might just change everything . . .

    Review:

    Under Your Skin by Shannyn Schroeder is the 1st book in her new For Your Love series. I loved the O’Leary series by Schroeder, and I am happy to say that Under Your Skin is a wonderful start to a new series. We even get a member of the O’Leary family in this book; Moira O’Leary is dating Jimmy O’Malley, who is the brother of our heroine.

    Norah O’Malley is our heroine, who has returned home after 10 years. Norah had been sent at the age of 12 to live with her aunt, since her father and 4 brothers could not take care of her. Now she is pregnant, and comes home to be with her family, as she decides what to do about her pregnancy. We meet Norah and her family from the start, giving us a chance to learn about the O’Malley’s.

    Norah was a great heroine; sweet, fun, beautiful, independent and determined to live her life the way she wants to. She decides she needs to get a job, as she is bored with being home. Visiting her brother Tommy, at his job in a tattoo parlor, Norah meets the boss, Kai, our hero.

    Kai has had a rough childhood, spending much time in gangs, and eventually going to jail. But he has learned from his past mistakes, and now runs a good business, and determined to keep himself clean. Norah begins to crush on Kai, but he wants nothing to do with her, as he feels he is unworthy. With his mother coming home from the hospital, Kai needed someone to take care of her during the day. When he is desperate, he hires Norah, which will turn into a mistake…..a good mistake.

    A major part of this story was Norah making difficult decisions on what to do about her baby. The father of her child makes an appearance, and they remain as friends only. Norah will stand firm that she will do what is best for the baby. Very nicely written.

    This was a very slow build romance, which was also fun watching Norah do all she can to seduce Kai. It was nice to see Norah become friends with Moira, her first friend since she came home. I enjoyed meeting all her brothers, with Jimmy and Tommy my favorites. I look forward to future stories on them all, though there will be no story on Jimmy, since he and Moira had theirs in the O’Leary series (you do need to read that series). Kai’s mom was also a great character, as she was fun at times. . I loved Norah, and did like Kai, but his constant refusal to open himself to love was annoying at times. He had to let go of his past to move forward with Norah.

    Under Your Skin was an enjoyable read, great characters and very well written by Shannyn Schroeder. I suggest you read this book and join the fun when we get more stories on the O’Malleys.

    Blood Is Thicker Than Ink. . .
    Norah O'Malley has been alone for a long time. It's been ten years since her father and four brothers shipped her off to be raised by her aunt. Seven months since she's seen the guy who got her pregnant--who still doesn't know. And it's two weeks since she came home to Chicago and discovered none of her family wants to talk--or listen.

    She never expected to walk into a tattoo shop seven months pregnant and get her socks knocked off by instant attraction. She can't even see her socks. But Kai Ellis is big and gruff and sexy as hell, and if he has a past, well, so does she. Even more, Kai knows how to listen so that Norah feels just a little less alone . . .

    All the chemistry in the world can't help Norah make her decisions. And no sizzle of desire will make Kai believe in happy endings. But a little time with someone who understands might just change everything . . .

    UNDER YOUR SKIN was a very interesting read. I’m not sure how to describe the book or even how to classify it. I just know that I really enjoyed it. I liked Norah and Kai as well as the secondary characters. I thought the story flowed well and couldn’t put it down. I would definitely read this book again and continue on reading the series. There’s a lot of emotion and tough themes dealt with in the story and while some might not have made sense, they worked well with the plot.

    I know I’m sounding very vague; I just can’t put into words how I feel other than I liked the story. It may not be for everyone, but I worked for me.

    I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own.

    When at war, aim for the heart…

    Connor Duffy is desperate. His tell-all book on corrupt Chicago alderman Brady Cavanagh isn’t telling enough to get publisher interest, and in order to get the hot dirt, he must find a way to get closer to the man who let Connor go to prison to cover for his own son’s misdeeds. So when fate puts Cavanagh’s lively, artsy daughter across Connor’s path, he decides to take advantage of the first bit of good luck he’s had in a long while.

    … but don't forget to keep your own under guard.

    Fiona Cavanagh needs a break. Between assisting with her father’s political campaign, trying to please her unpleasable mother, and dealing with an ex who won’t go away, she has no time for a life of her own. One night she meets sexy and mysterious Connor and everything looks like it’s about to finally turn around… until she discovers that the one man she thought she could love was using her to get to her father. As dark family secrets unravel around her, Fiona finds herself caught between love... and loyalty.

    As the Presidential election nears, what better type of romance to read than one with a political background? I won't go into more detail, but let's just say that with this election, Between Love and Loyalty could not have found better timing. I've had the pleasure of reading some of the author's previous books and I love how Shannyn gives a voice to complex characters. Connor and Fiona were not the most likable characters. While there were moments when I was not their biggest fan, I always found myself wanting to root for them. They kept a lot of secrets from each other, and while that is not necessarily healthy for a budding romance, it is how they come together in spite of their different backgrounds and how they rise above those secrets that made me stand firm in their corner by the end of the book. Connor was dealt a shitty hand when he was too naive to realize how it would impact his future. He has since learned the ramifications of his decisions and fights back in hopes that he'll someday be able to right the wrong. Fiona is no shrinking violet. She's got claws and she'll use them. They do start their sexual relationship wanting to use each other for their own personal reasons, but as they spend more time together and are able to break down the walls, they realize that there is a deeper connection between them and that scares them. That was when I really started to like both more, once they started getting real with each other.

    Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent reading Between Love and Loyalty. It actually took me a bit longer to read it than I thought it would and I think that's because of the intense attraction between Connor and Fiona. There were a couple times where they just wore me out. It is a bit different from the author's previous works, but that worked great for me. It gave me a fresh outlook on Shannyn's writing and now I want to get back into her current series.

    Shannyn Schroeder is the author of the O’Leary series, contemporary romances centered around a large Irish-American family in Chicago and the Hot & Nerdy series about 3 nerdy friends finding love. Her new series (For Your Love) will release this summer with the first title Under Your Skin. When she’s not wrangling her three kids or writing, she watches a ton of TV and loves to bake cookies.

    ***Our Thoughts***
    Fiona needs to release some steam from her complicated life when she meets Connor, a mysterious guy who is much more than he seems. Connor has a vendetta against Fiona’s father and is writing a tell-all book to expose him. He uses Fiona to get the dirt he needs for his book.

    This is a perfect time to read this political thriller. The storyline for this story was very good, and I was interested in what was going to happen. Though this couple had some really steamy scenes, I didn’t like either one of them. They were both wishy-washy, and I honestly would have been fine if they hadn’t ended up together.

    A fast-paced story filled with political corruption and just how far someone is willing to go to expose it, Between Love and Loyalty is a good choice for fans of suspense-filled romance and opposites attracting.

    My rating:
    When Reese Carter bands together with Adam, fellow comic enthusiast and illustrator, it appears that they have formed a dream team sure to propel them into the comic hall of fame. Adam Hayes has never met a girl like Reese. She’s sassy, smart, and loves talking comics, although he can’t see why she’d choose DC over Marvel. But this relationship is strictly professional. Or so he tells himself…

    Sydney Peters can’t wait to finally drop the cymbals in marching band and devote time to her true love: drums. She’s blocking out the cacophony during practice, especially sax serenades from Hunter Reed. But when Hunter offers her a paid gig as a drummer in his band, Sydney quickly changes her tune. Hunter is fascinated by Sydney’s distant allure. When he sees how passionate she is behind the drums, he orchestrates a plan to find out if she kisses like she plays.

    Free Mitchell loves the theater. But so far he’s played against character by following in his father’s footsteps as an investment banker. But nothing’s prepared him to play boyfriend to Samantha Wolf. Samantha isn’t quite sure what to think of Free. He’s cute, sweet, and quirky, but his outlandish costumes make him seem crazy. The more time they spend together, the more their steamy romance begins to take center stage.

    his-new-jamThis is a series review for His Work of Art, His New Jam and His Dream Role, three novellas that all revolve around three best friends in college. The stories overlap somewhat and it’s hard to talk about them separately, so I thought I would just mash them together and see what happens. These are apparently also sequels to other similar novels (novellas?) but they function quite well on their own.

    I liked all three couples – they are smart, talented young people who (mostly) know what they want.

    I thought Adam from His Work of Art was a bit of a scaredy cat – he’s a black guy (yeah about that – can you tell he’s black from the cover? I sure can’t…) who has real issues when dating a white girl, which prevented him from truly enjoying his time with Reese, even though she didn’t seem to care about it. I know that interracial couples can still encounter difficulties but I wish the topic was dealt with in a more profound manner – but this is difficult because novellas don’t exactly offer a lot of breathing room. I would love to see their comic, though. I’m a newbie when it comes to comics and graphic novels but their work sounds amazing.

    his-dream-roleI think His New Jam was my favourite – I have a soft spot for musicians despite the fact that I can’t play any instruments. Sydney and Hunter’s story was one I like in general – the tough girl who can’t seem to open her heart to anyone because she’s been burned before and the flirty boy who has to convince her that she is not just a fling.

    But I didn’t really connect with Free (Humphrey) and Samantha from His Dream Role, as their problems seemed to be the most superficial – Sam is a social work student who wants to disconnect herself from her very wealthy family. She thinks Free is a struggling actor, while he’s really an heir to an investment banking empire and when she finds out, she freaks. Well, okay, so he never told her about his family – but then she never asked. *sigh* You see what I mean?

    All in all, these three would probably work better if they were actually parts of one story, as in one single book. There would be less repetition and probably more cohesion, but they were still entertaining and sweet.

    FTC : I got this book for review from NetGalley.

    Why I picked up this book : I haven’t read much from Shannon Schroeder but this one piqued my interest; I wanted to know how this lovable, cosplaying geek found love in, what looked like, a fun and light read.

    What I liked

    I liked Free but it wasn’t so much him but the Cos-playing aspect of himself that I liked. I loved that someone would make himself the centre of attention for the sake of someone they loved and it was all done in such a way that the geek in me could enjoy this side to him and swoon a little 🙂

    What didn’t work for me

    Mainly, the issue I had with this book is that I didn’t actually feel the chemistry between the two characters in anything other than sex scenes. I really wanted to, but I couldn’t help feeling that all the lust and longing was coming from Free and that Samantha mainly saw Free, and his quirky behaviour, as a novelty. The whole plot seemed to build towards a particular misunderstanding, that was the major source of conflict for the relationship, but the issue was that I found that conflict to be absolutely ridiculous and I lost all respect for Samantha because of it. It was pretty much downhill for me from there.

    Would I read it again?

    No

    Would I read the author again?

    I’d try something else, yes.

    Favourite quote

    She eyes dim up and down, taking in his pin-striped suit and red Converse. He extended a hand, “I’m the Doctor”

    “Doctor who?”

    “Exactly.”

    ★ MY REVIEW ★

    His Dream Role is the 6th book in Shannyn Schroeder’s Hot & Nerdy series. It has a great plot, fun characters, and is a nice, easy read. There is no cliffhanger here, folks, and you will have an HEA at the end. The story is told from a third person point of view between the main two characters. It can be read as a standalone.

    Now let me hop onto Free and Sam. These two were just fun and for me this book took a different turn than the 4th and 5th book in this series did. Free is an actor who dresses up in costumes to draw attention away from his brother. It is sweet, but it also shows so much personality on his part. The problem is, while playing all these roles, he’s never sure if a girl will like him for who he actually is. Sam, on the other hand, is one of those characters you just like. That is the best way I know to put it. She’s fun, she’s caring and kind-hearted. She reads like she has an old soul too, while still being young.

    These two are not without their struggles however, and assumptions or omitting things unintentionally can throw a wrench in the works. The chemistry between them is different in this book. It isn’t what I would call instant. In fact, at first I thought to myself, he likes this girl, but he seems to zip off within five minutes of talking to her every time. I came to like and understand that. The chemistry definitely has a slow build but when it goes off, it really goes off.

    I’m sad to see this is the last of the Hot & Nerdy series! I actually hope there will be more because the topics and different plot lines make for fun and interesting reads. You really got to sort of jump into Free’s acting here, as well as what Same does for her job. (Yes, I’m being vague, no spoilers!)

    I would most definitely suggest you pick His Dream Role up and give it a go. It is a sweet story that will stick with you.

    Synopsis:

    Sydney Peters can’t wait to finally drop the cymbals in marching band and devote time to her true love: drums. With the semester coming to a close, she’s blocking out the cacophony during practice, especially sax serenades from Hunter Reed. But when Hunter offers her a paid gig as a drummer in his band, Sydney quickly changes her tune. The two favor different styles, but they make beautiful music together…in more ways than one.

    Hunter is fascinated by Sydney’s distant allure. He might be a ladies’ man on campus, but the sarcastic cymbalist is impervious to his advances. When Hunter sees how passionate Sydney is behind the drums, he orchestrates a plan to find out if she kisses like she plays. What he doesn’t anticipate, however, is falling so hard. But will the repercussions of his past crash down on his chance at something real?

    My Take:

    Sydney Peters is passing her time with the cymbals in the marching band which she hates just because she needs the credit and so that she can move on to her real love, i.e. drums. Hunter Reed plays the sax in the marching band and is a ladies’ man but has a rule of not dating anyone from the marching band but somehow he wants to change that rule for Sydney.

    They are opposites and, well, they say that opposites attract! 😛 They have same interests and same love for music despite their differences, that is what brings them close in the first place. Hunter sees Sydney play the drums and is mesmerized by her passion. He requests her to teach him and also be a part of his band. Sydney isn’t sure at first because-

    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-40-05-1

    But then her love for music and the chance of working with a real band grow upon her insecurities. She has always wanted to be a part of a band and has unsuccessfully tried to put together a band. She finally agrees and goes to his place for band practice and for his drum lessons.

    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-40-05-2

    While the lessons are in session, she learns more about him. He isn’t what she thought, he has more personality than she expected him to have.

    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-40-19-1

    Her past has instilled a fear in her and she has built a wall around her. It is fun to see how Hunter breaks that wall down and captures her heart.

    His past threatens their relationship. Whenever there is a player trying to settle down, we can almost everytime expect some drama from their previous lovers. Hunter trying to apologize and make things right between him and Sydney is well-written. 🙂

    Why would I pick it up?

    People overcoming their fears to move on in their lives and to find love is a concept that will never get old. Conquering your fear helps you see your life in full potential. A story with that moral is hard to pass on. 😀 😀

    Rating: 3 Stars

    Having read the other two Hot & Nerdy books from this "trilogy", I wanted to jump right in to this one. It is Hunter's story, a character that has been mentioned in His Work of Art and His Dream Role. Having read those two books first, I fully expected Hunter to be some sort of playboy character that wouldn't be sympathetic at all. It turns out he was the best part of the book.

    I didn't agree with a lot of what Sydney seemed to feel and act upon. She was incredibly negative about a lot of things, least of which was the marching band that she was in due to a scholarship. Being there gave her this incredible opportunity to get an education, but she looked down her nose at it the entire time.

    I thought that her character also went a bit back and forth. One minute she's a fairly confident young woman who loves to drum, the next she's reduced to a bit of a whiner. I understand that she has a history of bad decisions, mostly centering around her high school sweetheart, but she never lets herself move on. It seems like she's about to multiple times, but then she runs away emotionally and sinks back into this version of herself that is much weaker than the face she puts on the rest of the time.

    Also, she is admittedly extremely jealous, even though Hunter has proven that he can be trusted multiple times. I'm not sure whether this stems from her experience in high school, but it felt unrealistic to me. I think that, had the story continued, Hunter might have gotten sick of her jealously, assuming she doesn't figure out a way to deal with her insecurities.

    The story moved along as a good pace and the characters, despite their flaws, were amusing and engaging. I wanted very much to find out how things would end for them, again despite the problems I had with their personalities.

    I've noticed something about this series, though. With the exception of Adam from His Work of Art, neither Hunter nor Free (His Dream Role) want to make careers out of what we are introduced to as their main passion. I can't decide how I feel about that. In most novels, if a guy wants to be an actor or a musician despite his wealthy family's wishes, he is going to do it. In these novels, the passions are more hobbies than true loves. It's a different perspective that, while refreshing, is a bit confusing and disheartening. This is what would happen in the real world and when I'm reading a book, I don't always want reality to show itself in this way.

    Music Recommendation

    The funny thing about this book is that the song Let Her Go by Passenger, which I recommended for His Work of Art, makes an appearance in this book as played by Hunter. Since I couldn't recommend the same song twice, I had to think about this for a bit and finally decided on Waiting for Love by Avicii. I heard this song before I watched the videos, so perhaps the story in the music video doesn't quite sync with what you'd see happening in His New Jam, but from the lyrics alone I heard a bit of Hunter and a bit of Sydney.

    Synopsis:

    Reese Carter is definitely not your average college girl. She’d prefer to spend Saturday nights playing Hero’s Crusade than attending a wild frat party on campus. When she bands together with Adam, fellow comic enthusiast and illustrator, it appears that Reese has formed a dream team sure to propel her writing into the comic hall of fame.

    Adam Hayes has never met a girl like Reese. She’s sassy, smart, and loves talking comics, although he can’t see why she’d choose DC over Marvel. He’s thrilled to finally put his artistic chops to use in their upcoming comic project. But. this relationship is strictly professional. Or so he tells himself. When the two combine forces, they churn out magic in more ways than they had planned; they never expected to develop a steamy romantic sub-plot of their own…

    My Take:

    Reese Carter and Adam Hayes are huge comic fans. Their interactions are limited to arguments over comics in Adam’s mom’s shop where Adam works and Reese is a regular customer.

    They don’t agree with some of the other’s choices in comics and that’s what makes their conversations fun. 😛

    Once Reese sees Adam work with his drawings and decides to approach him to illustrate for her comic books. At first Adam hesitates but then gives in because working with Reese will give him the work experience and will look good on his CV when he heads out to find a job. Having credentials for a book published, most probably won’t hurt.

    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-41-02-1

    They both are attracted to each other. Reese wants to explore that feeling but Adam feels uncomfortable because of their racial differences. This story shows how Adam overcomes his fear, of going through the things his parents went through being an interracial couple, and accepts his love for Reese.
    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-41-10-1

    Reese’s characters tell Adam much more about Reese than she lets on. When he confronts her, she is surprised and pleased that Adam caught on her fears from the story she wrote. They both help each other overcome their respective fears. That’s one of the most intimate things in a relationship, being comfortable with stripping away all the fears. After this they were destined to be together. 😉

    Screenshot_2015-09-24-09-41-19-1

    Why would I pick it up?

    Love is a strong feeling that can’t be put off by deciding to ignore it. One day or the other, if it is true, it will get you. Reading people shed their fears and accept their emotions is inspiring. 😀

    Rating: 4 Stars

    I accidentally started reading this series in reverse order, having started with His Dream Role, but luckily that doesn't seem to matter. I thought that Free from His Dream Role would have been my favorite character, what with his fascination with pop culture and the constant costumes that he wore. However, having since read His Work of Art, I think that Adam and Reese are a more interesting couple to read.

    Adam had relationship issues from the start because he was attracted to Reese, a problem for him because she was white. He wasn't prejudiced himself, but rather his father had abandoned the family because he couldn't take the constant comments and insults that he got because his wife was white and he was black. Being a mixed race child, this made Adam particularly sensitive to what it might be like if he were openly involved with Reese. He's genuinely interested in her, but even before they begin dating they meet up for coffee and he hears a racial insult directed toward Reese. He becomes protective of her, but he goes about it in all the wrong ways, figuring that distancing himself from her without really telling her why is the right way to go.

    Reese, now that I think back on it, was slightly underdeveloped. We get her basic history: she and her mom are living on their own because her mom left her dad due to his abuse. This sets up her distrust of men, but it's a very bare bones backstory. It isn't fleshed out much, which is more annoying after the fact than a real problem during the course of reading the story.

    I would like to have heard more about Adam and Reese's stories, particularly since what happened to them as children has such a huge impact on them as adults. I did enjoy their interactions and their resolution though, as well as the interaction with the other men from the Hot & Nerdy series.

    Music Recommendation

    This music video by Passenger reminded me of some of the hangups that Adam had regarding his relationship with Reese. His problem was that he thought that because his dad abandoned his wife due to racial intolerance of their marriage, he would be subject to the same situation. He didn't know what he was doing to himself, though, by letting the past cloud his view of a relationship with Reese until he nearly lost her.

    NA Review My Thoughts
    If you guys remember from my 3 reviews of the original Hot & Nerdy trilogy by Shannyn Schroeder, you know that I really enjoyed the was a series formula. First, I love that the books are told in dual narrative between each of the main guys and girls and I think you all know by now that is my favorite story telling narrative method. and Second, the trilogy follows a group of three friends. The books are each of their stories, BUT the cool part is that each of the books take place in roughly the same time period. So there will be a bit of overlap in each of the stories, but from a different characters perspective. What a cool concept right? I loved reading them all and seeing how they each fit together. The first three books in the Hot & Nerdy trilogy followed a group of girls. Well, Shannyn has decided to do another three books with the same series concept, but this time following a whole new set of friends- this time guys!

    I love it. Up first is Adam. Adam works in his mom’s comic book store. and in comes Reese, a college student that is in love with Batgirl. I really liked that Adam and Reese thought they were a forbidden couple for two reasons- One I will touch on later, but second the cute reason was that one of them loved DC comics and the other one loved Marvel. HA! Too cute. Reese is writing a comic for one of her college classes and she has scoped out Adam to be the comics artist. It also didn’t hurt that she had a pretty big crush on him. I liked that Reese was the one trying to pursue a relationship.

    The other issue that comes up in the book, and the one why Adam was so reluctant to date Reese is that He is part black and she is white. I know a few of people have criticized this and think that it is an annoying or lame relationship conflict to have, but I think that Adam felt like it was a valid concern in his head because of things he has gone through in his life. From his perspective it was a true conflict- and whether that is right or is wrong was for him to work out. That was part of his backstory and his journey. I think Adam and Reese’s conflict is just as valid as any number of other roadblocks they could face. Now did I always agree with Adam? No. Did I think he was being stubborn or pig headed at times? Yes, but he is certainly not the first character that has made me think something similar- no matter what the subject of their “conflict” is. (ok rant over.)

    I am really excited that the Hot and Nerdy trilogy is going to see another set of three books featuring a group of guy friends. Adam’s roommates are up next, and I can’t wait to check out their story. His Work of Art will have you nerding out over this cute romance.

    Spring break was supposed to be a last blast of fun for three friends before the reality of adulthood set in. But for the trio’s science whiz, it’s an education in instant attraction…
    Chemistry major Felicity Stone can tell you everything about the way chemicals interact, but when it comes to social interaction, she needs schooling. Abandoned by her friends, Felicity is faced with spending spring break alone—unless she accepts a gorgeous stranger’s invitation to pose as his girlfriend at a family wedding. Not one to turn down a research opportunity, Felicity never expected it to produce such breathtaking results…
    Teacher and baseball coach Lucas Tanner is fascinated by Felicity’s potent mix of spirit and scientist, not to mention her delicious curves. When Felicity asks him to return the favor by teaching her how to pick up guys, he can’t refuse—but he’s not at all happy with the idea of her using a formula for flirting on anyone but him. Can he convince her that together they have the perfect chemistry?
    ~~~
    Out of the whole Hot & Nerdy series Her Winning Formula is by far my favorite. I was easily able to relate to Felicity, much more then I was able to with Charlie or Layla. In my personal opinion I loved the ending to this one the most, the other two books ended in a similar matter that this one didn't.
    Lucas is also my favorite male character from the whole series. There was something about him that drew me to his character more then the others. But the story short, leaving me hungry to know more about Lucas and Felicity. I felt that the first two books were a bit rushed in certain parts, but Her Winning Formula flowed smoothly at a pace that kept you reading.
    Felicity, Charlie, and Layla's friendship is something I hope to have with my friends have in the future. Overall I really enjoyed the Hot & Nerdy series. They were short, easy reads that where perfect for a rainy day.
    Review
    While in route to her spring break destination Felicity meets Lucas. Since her plans have been changed and she’s no longer meeting her best friends Charlie and Layla, Felicity decides to go along with Lucas’ plan to have her play his girlfriend while he attends his brother’s wedding. Not much of a hardship since he’s gorgeous, she just has to remember that’s she’s just laying a part and keep her distance.
    Lucas is drawn to Felicity’s smarts and understated beauty. So having her playing his girlfriend for a few days sounds like a win-win situation for him. He gets to keep his ex-girlfriend at bay while spending time with a sexy, intriguing woman. But what he wasn’t counting on were the emotions that would arise with spending time with Felicity.
    I liked the premise behind the story and thought that the author did a great job in bringing something different to this popular trope. But what I couldn’t get over was the insta-love scenario coupled with the lack of connection between the characters.
    Usually I can overlook the insta-love in a story if the connection between the two individuals is firmly established on the page. However, that was not the case with Her Winning Formula. Yes, there was a connection between Felicity and Lucas, but it wasn’t expanded upon. Although I enjoyed their interactions, I felt there was something missing–that essential ‘thing’–needed to take their relationship to the next level.
    Having said that, I did enjoyed getting to know the characters, the chemistry they shared and how the author went about bringing it all together in the end.
    Review:
    I received an eARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
    I had previously read Her Best Shot and I enjoyed it, so when I noticed the second and third book in the series were on Netgalley to request, I knew I had to request both books.
    Her Perfect Game is a very lovely story. The two main characters are Jonah Best and Charlie Castle. If you have read Her Best Shot, Charlie may seem familiar seeing as she made an appearance in a conversation on the phone with Layla.
    Charlie dropped out of college because she realized it wasn’t something for her—she would easily get distracted and not pay any attention in class. Also, a tragedy had hit Charlie and she turned to Jonah so he could help her figured out how to hack into computers and find the one that caused this tragedy. Jonah realized that Charlie was being eating by revenge and he left because he didn’t want to see Charlie self-distract.
    Three years later, they meet at the Hackfest, a convention where gamers/hackers get together to compete for a prize—a prize Charlie needs since she’s a college drop-out and doesn’t have a job.
    Jonah and Charlie are definitely nerds with their gaming skills, talking about it like any other normal conversation and having fun with it. Their story is another one that I enjoyed—probably enjoyed it even more than Layla and Phin’s story in Her Best Shot.
    I really liked both characters, especially Jonah, wanting to take care of Charlie and watching out for her at all times. Even after three years, it is noticeable how their sexual tension is definitely still there and intense and leaves the reader fanning themselves over the hotness. The romance in this story was wonderfully written.
    If you are looking for a fun, lovely, romantic and short story, I recommend Her Perfect Game.
    NA Review My Thoughts
    Her Perfect Game is the second book in the new adult Hot & Nerdy trilogy by Shannyn Schroeder. I knew after I read the first book, Her Best Shot, that this was a series formula that I was going to love. Her Perfect Game starts out at the same time that Her Best Shot starts out, but from a different friend’s point of view. This is Charlie’s story and I loved her and her hacking con even more than I loved Layla. I have always had such appreciation for people that know their way around computers. I am decent myself, but some of the things people can do just blow my mind. Plus, I have a bit of a nerdy streak in me when it comes to computer games as well. So this was the perfect storyline for me to get into.
    Her Perfect Game was almost completely about Charlie, Win, and Jonah. Her friends only showed up in phone call cameo’s and she still never told them her secret- that she had dropped out of college. I kind of wish that got addressed more. The book was split between a con and hacking convention, both of which took place in Chicago over the same weekend. I loved that you had to passed a series of secret tests and challenges before you were even invited to participate in the hacking competition. Charlie is good. Really good. It was so cool to get a little insight into the things that she could do. I have no idea if these types of conventions exist for hackers, but I am so hoping that they do. And the fact that companies send people to scout them for jobs, is so freakin’ awesome!
    I love how Shannyn Schroeder has created the perfect blend between a shorter story that reads really fast, and enough detail to make the story feel full and complete. This one felt more fleshed out than Her Best Shot. I am super excited to read the next book, but I don’t want the series to be done yet. I am really hoping for a fourth book that has all the girls together. Maybe the can finally go on that trip together that they always wanted. Or maybe it could be an NSA/computer security issue that Charlie, Layla and Jonah need to tackle. I just want more. If you like new adult, this is a series that you should be reading. The Hot and Nerdy series is such a great premise and I love how it was executed. I want to read 50 more books like these.
    Synopsis:
    With college graduation looming, three childhood friends vow to make spring break their last blast of pure fun. But at least one of them didn’t count on such incredible heat…
    Layla Sharpe is definitely more math ninja than bikini babe, and her future has been calculated with razor precision. Convinced to let loose over spring break, Layla is finally ready to party—until her car breaks down halfway to her destination, leaving her stranded in Georgia with a mouthwateringly hot pool shark. She knows more than enough about angles to learn the game, but this week she wants him to appreciate her curves…
    Phin Marks has never met a girl like Layla. She’s more Star Wars geek than seductress, and when he offers her a place to stay while her car is in the shop, he’s counting on the attraction between them to set the nights ablaze, no strings attached. But every moment he spends with Layla makes it harder to let her go. Can he persuade her to gamble in the most dangerous way possible…on forever?
    Quick & Dirty: One MIT girl heading for fun, and one pool shark avoiding trouble, what can go wrong?
    Opening Sentence: “Layla Sharpe held her composure until she reached her car.”
    Excerpt: No
    The Review:
    Layla Sharpe is just about to graduate from MIT, when she makes a call to the NSA about an internship and it turns into a job offer. She calls her friends Felicity and Charlie and they make plans to celebrate over spring break. Layla decides spur of the moment she is going to drive all the way to Texas. While driving there her car breaks down, and she ends up in a bar for drink while waiting to hear how bad it will be, when she notices Phin playing pool with another person. Soon he is offering to help her learn, and help with her car! Then her backpack is stolen and Layla loses all her money.
    However, Phin comes to the rescue, as he actually works at the place where her car is being fixed, and he offers to let her stay with him. Soon they fall into bed, and Layla falls in love. So does Phin, but he doesn’t want her to make huge changes to her life so he takes some drastic steps to ensure Layla heads back to MIT to graduate. Will they see each other again? Will their love find a way?
    This was a cute quick read. My guess is the girls in this series are nerdy and hot, and all the guys are a little bit bad and smoking hot! I am not 100%, but that’s the vibe I got from this one. Since I am a bit of a fangirl, I did love this book. It was super cute, and while I am not a fan of instalove, I kind of overlooked it because it was such a good read. I will say I thought it was odd that a girl as smart as Layla would be willing to leave school and make huge life decisions five seconds after meeting a guy.
    That is my only complaint though, because Phin was a good guy and totally unwilling to have her ruin her life for him. Felicity and Charlie were only minor characters in this one, and I was hoping Layla would actually make it to hang out with them. I wanted to know more and learn more about them, especially since they are the focus for the other books.
    “Phin nodded. He didn’t know what he’d been thinking, offering to play with this girl. She had trouble written all over her. He’d noticed her as soon as she entered the room.
    First, this bar rarely had pretty girls walk through; second, she paid as much attention to the game as she did the players, so he wasn’t quite sure what she was looking for.
    Her short, dark hair was a mess, and she wasn’t wearing any makeup. She wore her clothes comfortably, and he liked the Star Wars joke on her shirt. The problem was he’d managed to avoid trouble for a long time. She was different, and that alone caught his attention.”
    Layla Sharpe is definitely more math ninja than bikini babe, and her future has been calculated with razor precision. Convinced to let loose over spring break, Layla is finally ready to party—until her car breaks down halfway to her destination, leaving her stranded in Georgia with a mouthwateringly hot pool shark. But every moment he spends with Layla makes it harder to let her go. Can he persuade her to gamble in the most dangerous way possible…on forever.
    (Summary from Goodreads.)
    This book was most definitely a disappointment. Right from the start Her Best Shot didn’t quite click for me. I felt like I’d been thrown straight into Layla’s life but instead of the author working to make me feel connected I was expected to catch up and know Layla. Yeah, that didn’t quite work for me.
    Layla is a math and computer major who’s just been offered a job with the NSA so she and her friend decide to celebrate with a spring break trip. When I initially heard about the Hot & Nerdy series a couple of months ago, with each book focusing on a different girl in one friendship group, I thought friendship would play a large role in the characters’ lives. I wanted to see the relationships within the friendship group, meet the other girls and really fall in love with them but that didn’t happen. I think Her Best Shot would have been much better if I’d been able to see Layla interact with her friends more because the way the book was written she felt pretty flat.
    So Layla’s car breaks down, she meets a hot guy named Phin, and she ends up staying with him while he fixes her car. This might have been me stereotyping (in which case shame on me) or just the way the summary or the book portrayed Layla, but I had expected her to be less comfortable around guys. Instead she was confident in herself and her sexuality as well as around Phin so go her :) Phin and Layla started off with amazing chemistry, which I was all for, but unfortunately the book went even more downhill from here.
    Layla wasn’t the only character who felt two-dimensional and I really didn’t connect with Phin either. It was more like these characters were play a role – a lot of it either wasn’t that genuine or it just failed to capture me. Unfortunately I thought the book took a turn down the insta-love route. It’s weird because it wasn’t really insta-love at all – they’re just attracted to each other, which doesn’t bother me, but suddenly they realise it’s more than sex and then Layla is thinking of just staying with Phin indefinitely. Again, this could have worked but then she doesn’t talk to Phin about it at all (hello, communication!!!) and just expects him to be on the same page. Uh no. This led to both Layla and Phin doing stupid stuff. Kind of annoying if you ask me.
    My other big problem with Her Best Shot was that the author didn’t show me stuff I wanted to see. That sounds kind of vague but, for example, let’s say something big happens, there are supposedly a truck load of feels, and the characters are left trying to sort through those emotions. Usually this is where I connect most with the characters but the author skipped it! It was like, here’s a twist, oops they’re both suffering, but let me just fast-forward a couple of months and just show you the toned down aftermath. Hello, that doesn’t do anything for me!
    But despite all my complaining I didn’t hate the book. I just definitely wouldn’t recommend it or reread it. Her Best Shot started off okay and if it had continued that way it might have been a 3 star read. Instead it’s a 1 star read.
    4 starLayla is celebrating landing a great job and finishing school by having a wild and carefree spring break with her best girlfriends. She has spent the four years dedicated to her studies and future career. She is a bit apprehensive of what her future has in store for her. She has never been a spur of the moment or fly by the seat of your pants kind of person. Everything in her life has been planned out step by step. With the upcoming graduation and future job, Layla is fearful of getting stuck in a rut going to a 9 to 5 job and not experiencing any spontaneity in her life. Spring Bread is her last chance at life on the wild side. Her plans for spring break get derailed when she has car trouble in a small town outside of Atlanta. While she is waitng for her car to be repaired she decides to hit the bar.
    She finds herself captivated by a pool player in the bar. He keeps winning game after game. Not only is he a hot shot pool player, he is one of the sexiest guys she has met. What starts as a fun way to pass the time ends up being a night that will change her life. Between the dancing, the flirting, and fiery kiss, Layla and Phinn are winning a game with higher stakes than a friendly pool game.
    Phin is also captivated by Layla. He has never had that much fun and an immediate connection with a woman. His carefree lifestyle, moving from one pool tournament to another has started to wear on his soul. He is tired of the gypsy lifestyle and life without roots. He’s been saving to have that life.
    These two will be thrown together and find that they are the perfect balance for one another. These two will have to overcome the hurdles that separate their lifestyles. They may go about it the wrong way but when they finally get on the same page it is sizzling hot.
    I loved this novella and am looking forward to Layla’s girlfriends getting derailed on spring break as well.
    Review:
    Just a Taste by Shannyn Schroeder is the 5th book in her wonderful O’Learys series. The O’Learys is a wonderful enjoyable series about a close knit Irish family, and in each book, we get to spend time with them all, as well as watch one of them find their mate.
    Just a Taste belongs Liam O’Leary, who is a chef. Liam has always wanted his own restaurant, and is now working at high clientele establishment as the head chef. However, he is not happy, as he feels his boss does not appreciate him, and makes changes without his knowledge.
    Our heroine is Carmen Delgado, the daughter of an old friend, who Liam worked for when he was young, and he taught him everything. We find out early on, that Carmen’s father, Gus has died, and has left his food truck to both Carmen and Liam. They need to run the truck for a year, before they can even attempt to sell. Needless to say, this brings Carmen and Liam together, as it has been years since they have seen each other.
    What follows is sweet, slow to build romance between Liam and Carmen. It was fun to watch two friends work together, and learn from each other how the truck business works. While they end up enjoying their partnership, they begin to discover there is something more between them. Carmen has her own private issues, one being able to handle the loss of her mother and father in a short period. The other being her lack of self confidence in herself and her looks. When she was young, she was overweight, and though Carmen is now very beautiful, she does not see that. It will take Liam to show her how beautiful she is in every way.
    I enjoyed the romance, as it was sweet, and soon became sizzling. I loved Liam, as he is exactly what every mother would want for their daughter. He was sweet, caring, loving and determined to win Carmen. They made a great couple. Most of all I loved seeing all the family again, as well as the fun of the truck. This really was wonderful story, and a great series. If you love romance, great couple, family atmosphere, then look no further than the O’Learys series. Just a Taste continues the trend of wonderful stories by Shannyn Schroeder.
    I absolutely loved that Liam is a chef, no surprise there. I liked the food aspect, the starting off on the food truck again and the routines it involved, working it out, finding what they could do with it. Intriguing, interesting and fun.
    Liam and Carmen had a believable connection and attraction, it was endearing how they took care of each other during the crisis in their lives from the beginning. The body image and food issues that Carmen had were real, but workable, and Liam was willing and able to tackle the issues. Once again a story that shows how important open and honest communication is in a relationship. There were times when they made me smile, and sigh, and at times go 'did he really just say/do that'. Definitely an engaging story, that get a reaction from the reader.
    The big families around them were both fun and stressful. Liam's mom's reaction to their relationship was at first a surprise to me, but realistic, in after thought. I get that Rosa, Carmen's cousin/best friend, was a total opposite of her, but I also got the feeling that she was jealous of the relationship, not a very loyal friend, and was working against Carmen towards the end, I was not a big fan of Rosa.
    Just a Taste is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel, but it did make me curious of the other stories. The author writes well, and the flow of the story was pleasant and the people were realistic and charming.
    Even though the ending was satisfying, how they both found the balance in the new situation of their lives, I wasn't ready for it to end, I wanted more. Captivating story, with real life issues, an interesting theme, big families, and hot romance.
    Review:
    Catch Your Breath by Shannyn Schroeder is the 4th book in her wonderful O’Leary series. This series is pure romance, and enjoyable fun books to read. The nice thing about this series is that even if you have not read the previous books, you can read anyone of these books as a standalone without missing too much. Shannyn throughout the book shows many of the O’Leary family members and you do not miss too much. Though it is always nice to start from the beginning.
    Moira O’Leary is our heroine, and I loved Moira in this story. She is a strong, tough, independent and very passionate heroine. Moira is a reporter trying to get her big break, but is stuck at covering parties for the rich. At one of these parties, Moira sees Jimmy O’Malley, and wonders why he is at one of these parties. She has had a childhood crush on Jimmy, and even now she still finds herself very attracted to him. However, Jimmy wants nothing to do with his best friend’s (Liam O’Leary) little sister, even if she is now a gorgeous redhead.
    Jimmy is a young detective, and he wants to move up the ladder. He is given an undercover job covering thefts at homes of the very rich. Jimmy is determined to use this as his stepping stone to help him rise up, and will let nothing stand in his way. Especially the familiar young lady who spots him at his first party acting undercover.
    Moira jumps on the opportunity to get a big scoop, not to mention spend time with Jimmy and use her wiles to make him notice her. Jimmy though will be a tough nut to crack, since he considers her off limits because of his close relationship to her brother, whom he is afraid will not approve. But it will be easier said than done, as Jimmy finds himself unable to ignore Moira, and the sparks fly off the wall between them. In between this passion fill romance that sizzles throughout, there is a mystery. As Jimmy works to find the leaders behind the thefts, Moira begins to work on another angle for a story. This causes much conflict between them, as Jimmy doesn’t like her getting anywhere near his case, not to mention getting into danger.
    As I noted, I loved the character of Moira. She was perfect in every way. Jimmy however, left me with mixed feelings. He was a hunk, and truly a nice guy, who really did care about Moira. But I also found him to be too macho or arrogant in his beliefs. He was one of the guys who wants full control of his woman, certainly not an independent one like Moira. A few times I wanted to smack him. I also thought the angst between them was a bit redundant. Will Moira, who has a lot of experience with her brothers at handling alpha males, be able to change Jimmy’s stubbornness? Is it possible that they can rise above their obstacles?
    Catch Your Breath was a lighthearted, refreshing and fun read. The romance was sexy and hot, with a couple that despite their obstacles were perfect for each other. Shannyn Schroeder has written another wonderful storyline that continues with her O’Leary series, and I look forward to the next book.
    Review of Catch Your Breath by Shannyn Schroeder and a giveaway
    My Thoughts:
    Catch Your Breath is the fourth book in the O'Learys series. It was a great stand alone book so don't worry if you haven't read all of the previous books. That is not to say that you won't want to read them. Just that you could read this one and then work your way through the others if you chose to. Which would probably be the case. :D
    This book had some danger, mystery, a childhood crush, a cop, a reporter, and lots of family interaction and banter.
    I love the characters, the neighborhood, the camaraderie, the setting. It was a really enjoyable story.
    When you add in the fact that there is some major attraction between Moira and Jimmy, the flirting, and the way they get under each other's skin. Oh my!
    If you like some mystery with your romance, a career minded heroine who won't back down, or a great family dynamic in your books, you want to read this book.
    I received an ecopy in exchange for my honest opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I laughed, wanted to strangle Jimmy and couldn't help but admire the relationship between the family members.
    Book Review: More Than This by Shannyn Schroeder
    Just a little side note: My blog is currently under some major construction. I began this as a class project a couple of years ago and have deleted a lot of the creative writing posts and even some of the book reviews I did back then. I will be bringing in a new layout, content, and random book giveaways soon. So spread the word, y'all! Free brownies and free hugs will be involved. Did I mention I am a pastry chef and a professional hugger? I am.
    Now . . . Onward to the review!
    Title: More Than This
    Author: Shannyn Schroeder
    Genre: Contemporary Romance
    Spoilers: No way! Y’all get your own copy. : D
    Note: This book contains steamy, beautiful, sweet, sexy love making that may not be suitable for anyone who is offended by such things.
    Please Read My Book Review Disclosure
    Summary:
    “Someday had become her mantra for years. Someday had already taken too long.”
    High school English teacher Quinn plans everything—right down to the month she wants to be artificially inseminated in order for her work schedule to comply with the month her baby is born. When she decides to carry out her “My Someday” list, she reluctantly hands over the reins to her sister and best friend to write out the list for her. Quinn must carry out this list of eight things before the end of the summer.
    Quinn and her colleagues frequent O’Leary’s, a bar owned sexy, family-oriented Ryan. When Ryan makes it his goal to become more than a bartender to Quinn, he gets a little more than he ever expected from the shy English teacher. Between a sister who she thinks is prettier, more talented, and more experienced in the Man Department, and an ex-husband who worked at a bar throughout their marriage—which for him meant staying drunk all the time and countless infidelities—Quinn is reluctant to be anything more than friends with an unrelenting Ryan.
    My Opinion:
    Ryan and Quinn develop a friendship that inevitably gets Ryan stuck in the friendzone. Family, friends, a wallowing ex-husband, and numerous horrific internet dates get in the way of a story that could have held more. Since I do not want to add any spoilers, (not to mention I am very stealthily making you decide to get your own copy . . . gah, I'm like a book ninja!) the only thing I will say is the ending was so abrupt I had to go back and re-read a few pages to see what I missed. That was one of the only cons I felt about this book.
    I like the author’s style. She has a good mix of steamy and funny and seriousness to her characters that makes you want to give up your plans for the day and find out what happens. This book, I believe, will appeal to readers who are looking for a romance that develops slowly, then all at once. More Than This is not a story that is all-conclusive. I’m a sucker for a good epilogue. I love to see what the characters are up to—be it tomorrow or five, ten, twenty years down the road. I did not get an epilogue with this book, but a preview into what’s going on in Quinn’s sister’s life. I am pretty excited about that. Actually, I would love to know what is going on with Kate, as well. Oh, and throw some Colin in there, too. I feel there are so many books that can come out of this one story and I will most definitely read all of them.
    I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
