Split

Split tells the story of Shyann Jennings, returning to her hometown of Payson, with her head hung in shame. She left home five years earlier to attend college and pursue her lifelong goal of becoming a broadcast reporter. Those dreams came to a swift end when she messed up her chance to make it big. She was offered the opportunity to cover a story that would make her a known name, but when the camera turned on, she froze up. Further, she lashed out on-air at her cameraman as she tried to get him to stop filming her. Shyann lost her job and now the world knows what happened, so she will likely never have a chance to work in journalism again.

Back in Payson, Shyann takes a job in the family company with the plan of  saving up some money and then leaving to start fresh somewhere else. That plan changes when she meets Lucas, an employee of her father’s. Lucas is quiet and polite, and Shyann finds herself drawn to him. She can tell that Lucas is curious about her too, but he seems intent on keeping his distance. Lucas is attracted to Shyann, but he has a secret that he holds dear, which prevents him from getting too close to anyone. Shyann becomes persistent in pursuing him, and eventually his hard exterior begins to soften.

As the two embark upon a romance, Lucas is unable to hide his secret forever. Shyann understands that there is something that he is keeping from her when he begins showing serious memory lapses and his personality seems to shift periodically. When she finally uncovers the mystery behind Lucas’ behavior, the two must decide if the attraction they feel is strong enough to survive Lucas’ condition.

A contributor to Harlequin Junkie website wrote: “Split is an intriguing tale with surprises, drama, suspense, heat, and healing,” while a contributor to Smexy Books website noted, “this book had a deep emotional quality that I felt throughout the story.”

Wrecked

In Wrecked, the reader is introduced to twin sisters Sawyer and Celia. Sawyer has always been the more cautious of the twins, leading a steady, predictable life and never taking risks. Celia is the opposite. She has traveled around the world and lived her life to the fullest. When Celia is diagnosed with fatal brain cancer, she does not want to tell her friends and neighbors, so she asks Sawyer to pose as her to pack up her San Diego bungalow. This is out of the norm for Sawyer, but she will do anything for her dying sister.

While Sawyer adjusts to life pretending to be Celia, she meets Aden Colt, Celia’s landlord and a war veteran who spends all of his time on a fishing boat. Colt is traumatized from the war, and chooses to live in isolation on the boat than have to face the emotional rollercoaster of dealing with people. The two recognize kindred spirits in one another, and an attraction forms. “Aden and Sawyer both have fragile psyches, but Salsbury… brings them together thoughtfully with enough heat so that readers are rooting for their happy ending,” wrote a contributor to Publishers Weekly. A contributor to Harlequin Junkie website added: “Salsbury pulls you into the story from the first page.”

    About

Before I started writing all I did was read. There wasn’t a contemporary romance out there that I wouldn’t pick up. One day I realized a lot of stories I was reading seemed to follow the same formula. I got frustrated with predictable outcomes and unimaginative storylines and decided that rather than scour the Internet for the kind of story I wanted to read, I’d just write it.

    JB Salsbury
    New York Times Bestselling Author

When I published my first book I didn’t intend to write more than the one. If I could sell six books to six people I didn’t know I considered myself a success. But that first book sold well over six copies and I knew I couldn’t stop there.

I was bitten by the writing bug and have poured my soul into every novel I’ve penned since. Some of my books have become USA Today Bestsellers, New York Times Bestsellers, and Fighting to Forgive won a RONE Award. I couldn’t be more proud of where my writing has taken me.

I live in Phoenix with my husband and two daughters where I’m lucky to be able to do something I love and still be home to juggle carpool, field trips, and fifth-grade homework.

When I’m not writing, reading, or spending time with my family I can be found on any of the local mountain trails hiking, or at the gym when the desert temps become unbearable. I love being outside, beach vacations, and spending time with friends.

Imperfect people overcome real emotional obstacles to build a future in this uplifting contemporary. The Ocean Beach section of San Diego has a laid-back, hippie vibe that doesn't fit Sawyer's cautious personality. But her vibrant, identical twin sister, Celia, is dying from brain cancer and wants to keep the news a secret for now, so Sawyer reluctantly agrees to masquerade as Celia and to pack up her rented bungalow. Celia's friends believe she's merely clearing out the house so she can go on an adventure. Veteran Aden Colt, Sawyer's temporary landlord, isolates himself on his fishing boat because he can't escape the memories of war and his violent tendencies, but Sawyer's willingness to overcome her timidity in order to mimic Celia's outgoing personality makes him want to try to battle his own demons. Aden and Sawyer both have fragile psyches, but Salsbury (Split) brings them together thoughtfully with enough heat so that readers are rooting for their happy ending. REVIEW: Split by J.B. Salsbury

Posted November 15th, 2016 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, New Adult, Review / 2 comments

Split by J.B. Salsbury: Shyann needed to get out of her small, mountain town after losing her Splitmom. It was impossible for her to process that loss when everyone was so aware of what had happened. She headed to college and was determined to hit the big time as a reporter. When she made a mistake, she had no choice but to head home and re-group. Swallowing her pride and working in the family business again was her only option.

Luke has found his place in the small community of Payson. He’s a creative artist with a gentle soul and has a deep need to protect others. He’s afraid of getting close to anyone with his history of blackouts and memory gaps. He’s found good work and people who don’t seem to pry too much. Luke has a past that he knows from experience that he can’t outrun, so deliberately keeps to himself as a form of self-protection.

Shyann is intrigued by Luke. He seems to be quiet and a bit of a loner. She feels connected to him through his own loss, but she also feels challenged when he is so determined to avoid her. Avoiding Shy is impossible since they work for the same business. He’s reluctantly drawn to her and struggles to handle her questions and what she makes him feel.

“If I did something to upset you-”
“You didn’t, I’m…I’m not good with-” he waves his hand back and forth between us-“this.”
    “This?”
“Small talk. Or any kind of talk. I’m not good with people.”

Shy is very persistent. When she sees something she wants, she just doesn’t give up. With the palpable chemistry between them, Shy manages to crack Luke’s shell and gets to know him. Their relationship has plenty of ups and downs as Shy comes to learn his secret.

I shove the money at her. “Doesn’t feel right. Let me.”
Her eyes narrow. “If you pay, it’ll feel like a date.” The way she looks at me with an eyebrow raised in challenge makes me heart thunder in my chest.
I want this to be a date. I pass her the money and she takes it, a soft blush coloring her cheeks.
    “Thank you.”

Split is an intriguing tale with surprises, drama, suspense, heat, and healing. JB Salsbury created complicated characters that you want to find happiness, love, and understanding. Ms. Salsbury wrote a well-paced story with good character development. Fans of Molly McAdams and Marquita Valentine will enjoy Split.

Shyann Jennings left the small town of Payson five years ago to attend college and pursue her dream of broadcast journalism. But when she’s given the chance to cover a news story that could make her career and put her on the map for her dream job, her emotions get the best of her and she freezes up, unable to do the broadcast, assaulting her cameraman in an effort to stop him from filming. Following her on-air mishap, she finds herself jobless, possibly blacklisted in the newsworld, homeless and broke. She has no choice but to tuck tail and move home, something she never planned on doing.

Back in Payson, her plan is simple; find a job, save some money, and get out of town. But all her plans change when she meets Lukas. Lukas intrigues Shyann and she puts herself in his path every chance she gets in the hopes of getting to know him. Quiet, polite and handsome, there is something about him that calls to her. She senses that Lukas wants to get to know her too, but holds back and she wants to know why. Just when she thinks she has made some headway, something happens to push them apart. But Shyann can’t give up trying, even when she thinks she might be in danger.

This book had a deep emotional quality that I felt throughout the story. I could feel the pain, anguish and confusion Lukas felt when he’d attempt to explain things to Shyann. But I could also feel the hope and love of a man who wanted more, needed more and was willing to fight for it. This is the story of a man who suffers from multiple personality disorder. Having suffered a heinous childhood of abuse at the hands of his own mother; abuse of such horrific proportions his soul created an alternate identity in order to protect himself. This alternate identity would come forward when Lukas was threatened or scared. He’d take the punishments, bear the illnesses, deal with everything Lukas was not strong enough to handle.

I had no choice but to fall in love with Lukas. His initial scenes with Shyann are sweet and I felt his longing on every page. Shyann’s strength endeared me to her immediately as well. It would be so easy to walk away and give up when things don’t quite go as you expect, but that was not the Shyann I came to know. Tough-skinned and determined, her journalist’s heart could not let her rest until she figured out exactly what was going on with Lukas.

That said, my brain could not stop from doing a reality check during some of the early scenes when Lukas’ alternate personality would come forward, allowing Shyann to too easily deduce that what he was experiencing was multiple personality disorder. It is to the author’s credit that I could stop myself from totally losing faith in these uniquely complex characters; in the way she handled Shyann’s gentle prying with Lukas’ timid side only to stand her ground with his more aggressive and volatile side. Shyann’s ability to reach the heart of both personalities in spite of her fear, won me over time and time again as she refused to give up.

As secrets of the past are revealed, I could not help but to share in Lukas’ hope that Shyann was the real deal, that she would stay and not be frightened off by things that Lukas himself could not explain. When the horrific truth is revealed she proves herself to be a person Lukas can count on:

“Never in my life have I been shocked senseless. I’ve seen things, bore witness to the torture of children, experienced pain and mental abuse no human could fathom. Been cast out, treated as trash and spit upon by the one person in the world who is supposed to protect me. I never lost my head, never struggled for ways to fight back. Always remained in control. But as I stare wide-eyed into the hateful glare of the woman before me, I’m stupid. Completely incapable of a response. Not only does she not hate me, judge me, or at the very least pity me…but she also supports me. The concept in itself is insane. Women like Shyann, her big heart and tender soul, should see me as a plague. Run for her life and never look back. The fact that she doesn’t strips me raw and leaves me exposed.”

The catalyst that brings forth the ultimate truth had the perfect amount of treachery and suspense. Even though I found my suspicions of the actual bad guy to be true. The epilogue made me so happy even as it balanced on the fence of disbelief. Here again this author succeeds in proving the vow that love can conquer all. My heart was happy to know that in spite of such unforgivable pain and suffering, Lukas found happiness and true love.

I may have had an inkling of what this story was going to be about from the blurb and the very telling title, but in the end it was so much more. I really fell into this story; something that hasn’t happened in my reading for months now. I look forward to checking out this author’s backlist and I hope that her future works will continue to take us outside the romance box.

    REVIEW: Wrecked by J.B. Salsbury

Posted June 22nd, 2017 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, Contemporary Romance, HJ Recommends, Review / 2 comments

    HJ_Recommends

Wrecked by J.B. Salsbury: Sawyer has always been the more cautious twin. It’s been Sawyer who has the steady, predictable life while Celia went off on jet setting adventures and living life to the fullest. Sawyer is a planner, germaphobe, and doesn’t take risks. Their family is devastated to learn of Celia’s life-ending diagnosis, but Celia challenges Sawyer to be more like her and really live her life.

Aden prefers to keep to himself. He can’t outrun or drown the memories of his last op or the pain and guilt over losing his men. Now that’s he’s out of the Army, he tries to stay away from people and anything that could trigger his outbursts, anger, and paranoia. Fishing is the one thing he can do while escaping the crowds and noise.

Living more like her sister is harder than Sawyer expected. It used to be much easier to swap places as kids, but now Sawyer has to fight against her inclinations of taking the safer route. Meeting Aden is another of the surprises waiting for her. He may be the sexiest guy she’s seen, but his gruff demeanor can be off-putting.

“Are you always this high strung?”
“Do you always feel it’s important to point out my flaws?”
“Why do you care if I point out your flaws?”
“Why do you care about where I’m going?”

Making decisions by a flip of a coin leads Sawyer into spending more time with Aden. He definitely pushes her out of her comfort zone and into really living life like Celia would want. Aden finds at least some comfort just by being around Sawyer. They form an unlikely friendship that leads to more with chemistry they can’t ignore.

“Aren’t we going to throw him back?”
“Throw him back, are you kidding? This is dinner, freckles.”
Her jaw falls open, and those lips taunt me.
“Feel like lunch on the fly bridge?”

Wrecked is emotional, heartwrenching, and captivating. JB Salsbury pulls you into the story from the first page and doesn’t let go as two flawed characters are trying to find a way to live. Ms. Salsbury created a unique story with a great characters, family, angst, heat, and romance. Fans of Nicole Jacquelyn and Chanel Cleeton will love Wrecked.

It’s been months since Aden Colt left the Army, and still the memories haunt him. When he moved into a tiny boat off the California coast, he thought he’d found the perfect place to escape life. Then Sawyer shows up and turns his simple life upside down. Beautiful and sophisticated, she seems out of place in this laid-back beach town. Something is pushing her to experience everything she can-including Aden. But as much as he wants her, starting a relationship with Sawyer puts them both at risk.
