SIDELIGHTS

Abbie Roads works primarily as a counselor, her specialization being mental health. On top of her counseling career, she also pens novels.

Hunt the Dawn

Hunt the Dawn is part of Roads’s series of novels, “Fatal Dreams.” It is the second book in the series. The novel focuses on Lathaniel “Lathan” Montgomery, a detective who lives simultaneously with disability and a profound, extrasensory talent. Lathan has impaired hearing, but a phenomenal smelling ability. Even the smallest of scents can allow Lathan to detect the memories of others. It is through this ability that he has been able to crack countless cases. The only mystery Lathan has yet to solve involves “The Strategist,” a murderer who remains on the prowl. His efforts to catch The Strategist drive the events of the novel, and lead him into meeting Evanee Brown.

Like Lathan, Evanee lives with a potent psychic ability. She has somehow become connected to those The Strategist has murdered on a spiritual level, and is capable of communicating with them through her already troubled dreams. Once she falls asleep at night, she travels to a realm of the dead she has come to know as “The White Place.” After one night of dreaming, Evanee awakens to discover a disembodied eye clenched in her hand, one that matches the injuries of one of The Strategist’s victims. As a result, Lathan ends up recruiting Evanee in helping him solve the case. At the same time, an attraction develops between the two that is too strong for them to resist, and may be closely linked to the spirits Evanee is in contact with. Booklist contributor Amy Dittmeier remarked that the book “delv[es] deeper into the mystical forces that unite Lathan and Evanee.” A reviewer in Publishers Weekly wrote: “It largely succeeds as a fantasy of good versus evil.”

Saving Mercy

Saving Mercy is the first book in the “Fatal Truth” series. The book follows protagonist Cain Killion, an FBI worker who investigates murder cases. He is also still reeling from childhood abuse, and the case he is tasked with at the beginning of the book triggers painful memories for him. Because the case feels so familiar to him, he decides he must pursue the murderer. In the process, he meets Mercy Ledger, a young woman who may be the key to figuring out the hints left behind by the culprit. However, Mercy is fighting some personal demons of her own, and the last thing Cain wants to do is rip open old wounds.

At the same time, Mercy welcomes the chance to work with Cain, and considers him a kindred spirit due to their painful pasts. This path won’t be easy for her to follow, however. She is well aware of the dangers of them working together, as well as pursuing the romantic feelings developing between them, and must decide whether to stay close to Cain or part ways with him for his own good. On the Harlequin Junkie blog, one reviewer commented: “A haunting story about love, redemption, overcoming the past, and acceptance, Saving Mercy will stick with readers long after they’ve read it.”

    Seven Things about Abbie Roads:

    1. She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what’s most important, right?

    2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending… after torturing them for three hundred pages.

    3. By day she’s a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well… Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does—the keyboard might get a little warm.

    4. She can’t stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That’s major annoying. Right?

    5. She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.

    6. She’s represented by Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary.

    7. Her first book RACE THE DARKNESS was a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Pick for Fall.

HEA welcomes Abbie Roads, whose romantic suspense Hunt the Dawn (Fatal Dreams book two) arrives Tuesday.

hunt-the-dawn-abbie-roadsFirst, please tell us about your new release.

Abbie: Lathan is the hero of my heart. Maybe it’s because I spent two and half years writing his story. Maybe it’s because I love that he’s hearing impaired — my grandma was hearing impaired. Maybe it’s because he seems like a tough guy, but really he’s got the heart of a puppy — he just wants to be loved.

    Let’s get Down & Dirty …

Favorite ice cream? Snickers Parfait from the Jer-Zee Drive-In in Marion, Ohio.

What’s in your coffee? Lots of cream and one Truvia.

    First celebrity crush? River Phoenix.

Last picture you took? Me with Race the Darkness, the Advanced Reader Copy for Hunt the Dawn and a margarita! I’d just found out the audio rights to my next series had sold. I was celebrating with my men!

Biggest fear? Snakes. I have nightmares about them!

Least favorite food? Every kind of melon. Blech.

    Favorite junk food? Cheese balls.

Favorite meal? Either cheese pizza or mashed potatoes. And yes, I can make a meal out of mashed potatoes.

Last audiobook you listened to? Viking Warrior Rebel by Asa Maria Bradley.

Last concert you went to? Paul McCartney.

Last movie you saw in a movie theater? Inferno.

Last person you texted/e-mailed? My critique partner Brinda Berry.

    Favorite cookie? Oatmeal raisin.

Favorite dessert? My mom’s homemade strawberry pie.

What TV show must you absolutely see, no matter what? The Walking Dead and Supernatural

Last TV show you binge-watched? Lucifer.

Favorite TV show when you were a kid? Golden Girls.

Is that your real hair color? It’s been so long … I’m not even sure.

I’m really good at … looking on the bright side for other people.

I’m really bad at … looking on the bright side for myself.

I don’t know how to use … my TV remote.

I have a neighbor who … every time she calls — my husband thinks she’s her husband and calls her “Frank” because her voice is so deep.

I fear I’d act like a total idiot if I ever met … Stephen King.

For the heroes in my books, I often picture … tall men with good teeth.

My favorite thing about Christmas is … our Christmas tree. Every year we buy a live tree with a giant, heavy root ball as our Christmas tree. In the spring, we plant it. We enjoy walking through our yard and seeing all our past Christmas trees growing and enjoying the sunshine and seasons!

    About Hunt the Dawn:

    Out of darkness and danger

You can’t hide your secrets from Lathan Montgomery-he can read your darkest memories. And while his special abilities are invaluable in the FBI’s hunt for a serial killer, he has no way to avoid the pain that brings him. Until he is drawn to courageous, down-on-her-luck Evanee Brown and finds himself able to offer her something he’s never offered another human being: himself.

Dawns a unique and powerful love

Nightmares are nothing new to Evanee Brown. But once she meets Lathan, they plummet into the realm of the macabre. Murder victims are reaching from beyond the grave to give Evanee evidence that could help Lathan bring a terrifying killer to justice. Together, they could forge an indomitable partnership to thwart violence, abuse, and death-if they survive the forces that seek to tear them apart.

Q&A Session with Author Abbie Roads
Q&A Session with Author Abbie Roads
From agent rejections to publishing contracts, “dark romance” author Abbie Roads reveals the marketing and mindset strategies behind her success.

Could you share your background as an author?

abbieI started writing with the purpose of publishing in 2009. It was a decision I should’ve made years earlier, but looking back I wasn’t ready for the challenge until 2009. And it’s been a challenge—both learning my craft and emotionally.

Learning the craft of writing took a lot of time. I started out knowing nothing about how to write a book. I’m not exaggerating. I knew nothing. I read books on writing. I attended classes, conferences, workshops. I soaked up anything a writer was willing to teach me. I learned as I wrote. That’s the only way.

The emotional challenge came in the form of contest judges who hated my writing, editor/agent rejections, and critiques that hurt. There was a lot of negative that happened, but it’s how I learned and grew. The trick is to not get bogged down in that negativity, but see it as a growth opportunity.

On the other side of all that negative was a world of positive. I signed with an agent and then a publisher who offered me two 3-book contracts! Balance, my friends. Don’t give up when the bad happens. Good is just around the corner.

My first novel Race The Darkness just came out in October, and my second novel Hunt The Dawn came out last week. They are best described as dark romantic thrillers.

What do you use your mailing list for?

abbieI use my mailing list to share personal stories, let readers know important things happening in my book world, and to get the word out on social media. For example: last week Hunt The Dawn came out. I sent a “Happy Holidays and HUNT THE DAWN in the Wild” Newsletter to my subscribers. To be entered into a giveaway, my subscribers have to take a picture of my book in the bookstore, or library, or a copy they purchased and post it on Facebook or Twitter. In a manner of speaking, I’m using them to advertise my book!

The only drawback to my mailing list is the lack of group interaction. So I formed the Dangerously Dark Darlings Facebook group. It’s comprised of newsletter subscribers who want social interaction with each other. I’ve enjoyed getting to know them in a more personal fashion.

Do you have any advice for aspiring or new authors?

abbieI have two pieces of advice:

    1. Start building your mailing list early. Like right now. Even if you don’t have a book out, start building your list. I started building my list about seven months before my first novel came out. Looking back, I wish I’d started earlier. It takes time to grow a good list. And your mailing list is invaluable. It’s a surefire way of communicating with people who are interested in your books.

    2. Don’t be afraid to talk about your book! If people don’t know about your books, how are they ever going to read them? Share excerpts. Share reviews. Share your feelings during the writing process—both the ups and downs. Because there’s plenty of both.

Hunt the Dawn. By Abbie Roads. Dec. 2016.352p. Sourcebooks/Casablanca, paper, $7.99 (9781492639206).
With one whiff of a woman's perfume, Lathan Montgomery can see her most intimate secrets through his whirling left eye. His special abilities to
detect scent memories make solving cold cases for the FBI a breeze, but there's one killer who has continually eluded him, the Strategist.
Evanee's life of sexual abuse has always led to nightmares, but it wasn't until she met Lathan that these nightmares turned into something more.
Her White Place now allows her to see inside the mind of a serial killer, the very one Lathan has been hunting. When Evanee awakens from her
first dream with an eyeball in her hand, Lathan knows that with their powers they can finally stop the man that haunts him. Roads continues her
suspenseful, paranormal Fatal Dreams series, begun by Race the Darkness (2016), delving deeper into the mystical forces that unite Lathan and
Evanee. Though both are loners at heart, they find themselves drawn together by their powers and something more, an older force that neither can
deny.--Amy Dittmeier

Hunt the Dawn
Abbie Roads. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-1-4926-3920-6
The pursuit of a serial killer becomes a twisted, macabre trip in Roads's gritty, fantastical second Fatal Dreams romantic thriller (after Race the
Darkness). Lathan Montgomery is an FBI consultant with a genetic anomaly that burdens him with the power to read people's emotions through
their scent. He's currently tracking a serial killer nicknamed the Strategist, a quest that has brought him to rural Ohio. Waitress Evanee Brown
survived a harsh childhood with her sexually abusive mother and stepfamily. Evanee suffers from nightmares, born of trauma, that turn even more
ominous as the ghosts of the Strategist's victims reach out to her through a parallel universe. Lathan and Evanee, caught up in the serial killer's
orbit, become lovers, with a powerful physical connection that's tied to a Native American spirit. Roads's grim novel has ample suffering; it
largely succeeds as a fantasy of good versus evil, but its heavy-handed depravity becomes tedious as the story progresses, and readers may look
askance at the use of Lathan's paranormal abilities to balance out his hearing impairment. (Dec.)

    THEME: Trauma

Sometimes I can only take so much crazysauce and wtfery before I have to tap out. I know, I know, you good folks rely on me to read this shit so you don’t have to, but even I have my limits. I DNF’d Hunt the Dawn, but I did get far enough to share some prime F+ moments with you.

Hunt the Dawn is a romantic suspense novel featuring Lathaniel (yes, yes, that is his actual name) Montgomery, a man who can smell peoples’ memories.

I’m going to pause and let you soak that in. Lathan can smell peoples’ memories.

    Smell. Their. Memories.

You see, Lathan had some kind of tragic event happen in his life (I didn’t get far enough to learn what it was) that left him partially deaf but also with an extremely heightened sense of smell. And by extremely heightened I don’t mean identifying all the ingredients in a boiling soup. I mean he can smell emotions, and yes, memories. In fact, when he smells a memory, he relives it–a scent memory or “SM.” As a result, it’s hard for him to be around people.

Oh, and when he’s in the midst of a SM, his eye rolls around in his head uncontrollably.

The left one. In case you were wondering.

    So. Yeah.

Anyway. Lathan does what anyone with the ability to smell memories amid uncontrollable eye movements would do. He helps the FBI solve murders. He is specifically on the hunt for a serial killer named The Strategist.

Am I the only one who thinks we need to stop giving serial killers cool names? What about giving them dumb names, thereby removing any sense of power or importance from these guys? Instead of “The Strategist” why not “The Guy Who Shits His Pants On The Regular.” Yeah, it takes awhile to get out, but I think it sets the right tone.

Anyway, Lathan goes to some profiling seminar but he can’t make it through the event because the ASL translator is sending him some seriously pornographic SMs:

“I should go.” Her voice lacked as much conviction as her will.

“Baby, come back to bed, just for a little while.” Cara threw back the covers. She’d strapped Big Johnnie around her waist. He pointed proudly perpendicular.

She glanced at the bedside clock. She was going to be late. It’d be worth it.

The SM continued to play in front of his left eye. His right eye focused on Dr. Jonah. Lathan pressed his left eye closed with his fingers to block out the images, but they projected on the back of his eyelid. Hard to lose focus on reality. Disorienting as hell. Don’t lose control.

I need to break this down just for my own sanity and understanding: Lathan apparently smelled the interpreter’s memory of having hot sex that morning and then saw it projected on his eyelid.

    But just the left one.

Jessia Williams from the Daily Show is wearing an expression that clearly reads "WTF"

Right. (Or left?) So he flees the seminar because of the strap-on memories invading his brain–sorry, left eyeball–and then we cut to:

Evanee Brown, waitress at a knock-off Hooters. Evanee has just gotten done with work, which sucked, and thinks to herself:

The hardest part of the day wasn’t the eight hours in heels. It was this moment, when she had time to remember her belly flop off the cliff of comfort into the cesspool of white trash. From a safe, easy life to this truck-stop waitress existence. From trendy apartment to living behind Sweet Buns at Morty’s Motor Lodge. From privacy to sharing a room with Brittany, the town whore. From profound ignorance to the realization that everything good she used to have came from being a whore, too.

    Jesus H Christ.

A kitten hangs from a tree branch. The words "Hang in There" appear above him.

So Evanee’s roommate is with a client and Evanee decides to go sleep in her car for awhile. Except she’s accosted by a man named Junior who is also her former rapist. They get into a struggle and Lathan happens to come by on his motorcycle and kicks the shit out of Junior and saves Evanee.

He also notice that he gets no SMs from her:

He didn’t believe in God, but maybe, just maybe she was created for him. An Eve to his Adam.

Incidentally he thinks this like ten seconds after saving her from her rapist who HE KNOWS is her rapist because gets a scent memory from Junior.

    Britney Spears squinting in confusion

So he takes Evanee back to his cabin where she falls asleep, exhausted, on his couch. When she dreams she goes to a place she calls The White Place, “an endless plateau of white.” Apparently she’s had these dreams before. But then she sees a little girl:

She could only see the side of the girl’s face, but that was enough to see her beauty. She was the kind of child women were jealous of because they knew how stunning she’d be when she matured.

WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE WOMEN?

I have a lot of thoughts when I look at kids, namely “why so sticky?”, “thank god I don’t have one” and “is she going to bite me?” but I’ve NEVER been pissed at kid because I thought she might grow up to be pretty.

You know, Evanee has some serious internalized misogyny going on. She needs to do some reading and maybe talk therapy.

But don’t worry, when the little girl turns her head, her face is ravaged and she’s missing an eye and Evanee freaks out and wakes up.

Lathan comes to see what’s the matter only to FIND EVANEE HOLDING A FUCKING EYEBALL IN HER HAND.

Like, she went to sleep, dreamed about a kid missing an eye, and WOKE UP HOLDING THAT EYE.

A man stands against a background of stars in the night sky. He touches his forehead and an explosion eminates from his head, not unlike the one I experienced reading the eyeball thing.

Everyone freaks the fuck out. Lathan thinks:

He had questions and not one answer. What was her name? Why didn’t he get SMs from her? Why was he able to touch her? Where the fuck did she get a human eyeball?

YOU REALLY BURIED THE LEDE THERE LATHAN.

Like “Where the fuck did you get a human eyeball” should ALWAYS be the first question. And you know what, I bet the fucking answer is Amazon.

So then Evanee starts vomiting blood–but not her own apparently. She’s like able to conjure other people’s awful body parts or something. Man, she’d be the shittiest birthday clown ever.

Lathan is able to comfort her:

Heat spread up her arms to her shoulders, across her chest to her heart, then pumped outward to her extremities. His hands were twin IVs of feel-good plugged directly into her veins.

Note: If anyone offers you an IV of “feel-good,” they are not an actual medical doctor, okay?

Lathan’s FBI buddy shows up and is understandably concerned by the woman vomiting blood and holding a human eye. He’s there to ask Lathan for his help solving a case where a little girl is murdered and DUN DUN DUN she’s missing an eye.

(On a side note, I really, really want this to be a movie starring Tom Cruise. He’s so lacking in self awareness that I think he could really lend gravitas to the “smelling the strap-on memory” scene.)

Honestly, I felt bad for FBI guy. He’s just trying to do his job and he walks into the blood-vomit, scent memory WTF emporium.

And that’s where I stopped. Once Evanee started randomly generating other people’s body parts, I noped the fuck out. I rubbed my face for a little bit, and then I went and ate some Christmas chocolate and didn’t talk to anyone for awhile.

If you have the stamina to finish this book, by all means, let me know if it gets better. I can only handle so much.

REVIEW: Saving Mercy by Abbie Roads
Posted April 14th, 2017 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, HJ Top Pick!, Paranormal Romance, Review / 12 comments
    HJ_TopPick

In Saving Mercy (Fatal Truth #1) by Abbie Roads, Cain Killion’s horrific childhood is something he’d rather forget, but every time he works a case as a profiler for the FBI he’s drawn back into that dark world of blood and death. The most recent murder scene he’s investigating hits a little too close to home and so Cain sets off on the trail of a killer with possible ties to his past. And to a woman, Mercy Ledger, who endured trauma of her own as a child. He knows she may have some insight into the clue the killer left, although Cain isn’t sure that meeting Mercy face to face will be a good idea. After all she’s been through, he wants to be a positive force in her life–not a reminder of the trauma she’s tried to push behind her.

‘Life had been perpetually unfair to her. He ached for the pain she’d endured. The pain she still experienced.’
Mercy has been in mortal danger before and knows what suffering truly is. And to find herself yet again in a position to have to fight for her life is almost more than one woman can take. But she’s not willing to stop fighting. And now with the appearance of Cain in Mercy’s life, who is probably the only person on the planet who could understand her so well, she knows she finally has an ally. But as she finds herself falling more and more for Cain, Mercy also knows that their newfound relationship could be used to harm them. So she must decide if she’s willing to let him be in harm’s way or if this is a fight that she’ll have to finish on her own, to make sure no one else she loves ever gets hurt again.

‘No one else could ever understand her the way he did. And he needed her to show him he wasn’t a monster, but a beautiful soul who’d survived some bad shit.’
Twisted and intense, dark and yet still hopeful, Saving Mercy was a romantic suspense novel that had me utterly captivated. Full of psychological drama and with even a bit of the paranormal thrown in, author Abbie Roads has outdone herself with this masterful tale.

‘Blood did that to him, was a pleasure and a pain. A gift and a curse.’
Trigger warning: This story will likely be too much for some readers. It deals with gory murder scenes, just about every type of abuse there is, mind control, and torture. And blood. Lots and lots of references and scenes involving blood.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love Abbie Roads’ detailed, emotional writing style–or how much it messed with my mind! Not only did she create a complex story with intriguing plot twists, but she also created characters who were so real and flawed, who had such emotional depth, that as a reader I felt every emotion along with them. It’s not often that an author can draw me so deeply into a book, but so far each one I’ve read by Roads has had that same effect.

I wasn’t kidding when I said this was an intense, twisted story. There was a serial killer on the loose. A brave woman locked up unnecessarily in a mental ward. And our hero, actually an anti-hero, who survived a torturous childhood and decided to use his insight into a killer’s mind to help the FBI solve crimes. And we got those three different POVs throughout the story: from Mercy, Cain, and the killer. I must say that once I got to the end and could see how everything happened, I just wanted to turn around and read it all over again to pick up the clues I didn’t the first time around.

Our hero and heroine, Cain and Mercy, were truly tortured souls. Roads conveyed their feelings and thoughts so openly, in such an honest way, that it was easy to empathize with them right from the beginning. The romance that blossomed between Mercy and Cain was basically the bright spot, the lightness in the dark that was their journey. But I *loved* their connection. With the way their background intersected, it was a tangled relationship, but it was also one that ended up being so wonderfully tender that it melted my heart. I just thought Cain and Mercy both were such good, caring individuals who had been through things in their childhood that no one should ever have had to endure. And the fact that they were able to function at all as adults was a testament to their inner strength.

A haunting story about love, redemption, overcoming the past, and acceptance, Saving Mercy will stick with readers long after they’ve read it. And as this is just the beginning of the Fatal Truth series, I cannot wait to see what Roads has planned for us next!
