SIDELIGHTS

Vashti Quiroz-Vega is a writer, novelist, short-story writer, blogger, and book reviewer.

The Basement

The Basement is Quiroz-Vega’s first novel. Subtitled “Robbie’s Right of Passage,” the story concerns Robbie and his brutal, alcoholic father’s misguided attempts to toughen him up. Preteen Robbie has spent much of his life trying to prove himself to his father, his friends, and even to himself. He considers himself an ordinary youngster, but he is often the victim of bullying and harassment by other kids. When his father sees this happen to him, he becomes determined to give Robbie a way to become stronger and more determined. The lesson involves forcing Robbie to spend the night in the dank, creepy basement of the apartment complex where he and his father live. He will have no company—to prove his courage, Robbie must spend the night in the basement alone.

Terrified by the prospect of his ordeal, Robbie works to prepare. He recalls the stories of the giant rats that are rumored to live in the basement. He remembers all the tales of haunted basements, gloomy cellars, and other subterranean places that can harbor killers, creatures, or ghosts. When unexpected help comes his way, Robbie believes he might actually be able to endure his rite of passage without harm. Before his harrowing ordeal is over, however, Robbie must find out what actually dwells in the basement while drawing on reserves of courage and determination that he never knew he had.

In a post on the My Train of Thoughts On . . . Blog, Quiroz-Vega called The Basement a “tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, of treasure hunts and adventure, and of facing your fears.” Val Muller, writing in a review on the Val Muller Website, commented that the “situation presented in the tale is creepy, at times even terrifying,” and that by the end of the book, the story “will have you burning through the pages to see if your worst suspicion is correct.”

The Fall of Lilith

The Fall of Lilith is the first book of a projected fantasy series, the “Fantasy Angels” series. Self-published by Quiroz-Vega, the novel concerns the fate of a group of rebellious angels, particularly Lilith. The angels live in a beautiful area called Floraison, located in the lowest level of Heaven. They have free will, but are required to remain obedient to God and to maintain their physical purity. The angels in Heaven are assigned to a hierarchy. Lilith, however, isn’t happy with this situation, and though she wishes to be God’s favorite angel, she still rebels against the requirements and becomes disobedient to God.

The final insult for Lilith is the creation of humans, a group of beings she fears will alienate the angels even further from God’s grace. Angry and jealous, Lilith enlists the aid of the most famous fallen angel of all, Lucifer, in starting a rebellion against God. When the rebellion is over, Lilith, Lucifer, and their allies have been defeated and banished from Heaven to exist on Earth. Many of the angels are changed physically, given monstrous characteristics and fewer abilities than they had in heaven. Lucifer becomes the stereotypical image of Satan, while Lilith finds herself transformed into a half-snake being. In their exile on Earth, the fallen angels become even further corrupt, suffering from their decision to rebel. Undaunted and unchastened, Lilith plots revenge against God, along with the remaining angels, the burgeoning race of humans, and her one-time ally, Satan.

With The Fall of Lilith, Quiroz-Vega “has captured the essence of Dark Supernatural Fantasy,” commented Suzanne Burk on the website Welcome to the World of Suzanne Burk. The story “spins an engaging and fresh perspective on the biblical tale of creation, making it a story you can get swept into,” remarked a reviewer on the Readers Favorite Website. A Kirkus Reviews writers found the novel to be a “well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.”

Hello, and welcome to “WHO’S ON THE SHELF?” with yours truly, Nonnie Jules! Since we are a book club, you know we had to offer something that included a bookshelf. A lot of interviews merely cover an author’s work or an individual’s career stories. Here on this “SHELF,” we get down and dirty and ask the questions no other interviewer dare ask. We ask the questions that you want to open up a book and find the answers to on your favorite authors and fellow book club members, but, no one has dared to cover them. We get personal! Because when you sit on this “SHELF,” YOU are an open book! Even if I have to pry you open!

Today, we have a very special guest on the SHELF with us, RRBC member, VASHTI QUIROZ-VEGA! Vashti is our 1st “SPOTLIGHT” Author of the new year! It’s January and we have been celebrating her all month long. This week, she gets to sit on the shelf with me!

(Just as an FYI: This year I will not be editing the responses of my guests. I will post their responses to each interview question, just as they have written them.)

    227545_10150597633450724_3524451_n

NJ: Before we get started, how do you like the design and feel of my new shelf? We’ve made it more comfortable in 2018, and I’ve added a few bars to make it a bit safer. Some of my guests in the past have had some very unfortunate accidents and I don’t ever want that to happen again. So, are you comfy?

Vashti: I’m extraordinarily comfy and cozy. I feel right at home on your shelf.

NJ: Good, good! Now, let’s start by confirming whether or not your author name is your birth name or a pen name?

Vashti: Vashti Quiroz-Vega is my real name. Vashti Quiroz is my maiden name. I took my husband’s name when we married. It’s a bit scary to use your full real name but I went ahead and did it anyway.

NJ: It really is scary giving out so much information on this world wide web. But once you’ve given that much, your full name, I think everything else should be limited. Notice how Nonnie has no photos swarming around this place. That’s to keep all the “crazies” at bay. Vashti, tell us where you were born? Do you still live there now? If not, what city and state are you calling home these days?

Vashti: I grew up in NYC. As a teen, my family and I moved down to Florida. I still call Florida home. I’d like to live in North Carolina someday. I visited once and fell in love with the people and I always said I would live there someday.

    NJ: Married or single?

Vashti: Married. My husband is amazing. He’s very loving and supportive and someone I feel proud to call my partner in life.

NJ: That’s awesome news on the hubby front! Any kids? What kind?

Vashti: We have a fur baby named Scribbles. He’s a very sweet and smart Pomeranian.

NJ: I think I saw a photo of Scribbles. Cute kid! What’s the food that’s so good to you, you go to bed dreaming about it, and you forego breakfast just to get to it?

Vashti: I love pizza. I know I should have outgrown it by now, but I could live on it (I don’t, don’t worry). I try to eat healthily, and for the most part, I do. However, occasionally I do indulge with a couple of slices of pizza.

NJ: Haha! We own pizza parlors so I don’t eat much pizza, although I do enjoy it on occasion. Vashti, what’s your favorite color?

Vashti: When I was very young it used to be green. In my twenties, it was red and gold but now it’s blue––specifically turquoise.

NJ: OK. How about your favorite sport…

Vashti: I enjoy watching basketball. The movement on the court, the size and speed of the players, it’s mesmerizing.

NJ: Basketball is the favorite sport in our home (loved by hubby, not me). Right now I can hear the Boston Celtics and The Golden State Warriors playing. (I love Kyrie Irving and I love Steph Curry, by the way). Vashti, do you have a favorite TV show?

    Vashti: Game of Thrones. Duh.

NJ: Duh? I don’t even like the title of the show so you know I wouldn’t even attempt to turn it on to watch. But, I hear a ton of folks talking about it so there must be something there (just not my cup of tea). Who’s your favorite Actress/Actor?

Vashti: Kevin Spacey, Viola Davis, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Russell Crowe, Morgan Freeman, Julia Roberts, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, and Sigourney Weaver.

NJ: Seriously? We’re going to mention Kevin Spacey here on my show? I’ll pretend as if I didn’t hear his name.

    Judge Judy rolling eyes

Moving right along…do you like to exercise to stay fit OR do you not mind just letting it all go?

Vashti: I’m an outgoing person. I enjoy being active. Although I haven’t worked out as much as I used to in the last couple of years. I’m going to improve on that this year.

NJ: That’s awesome that you’re making your health a priority this year, Vashti! Good for you! What’s your biggest pet peeve that makes you want to spit nails? (For the record, NJ does not condone violence, but she does believe in being honest so she admits that there are those times and there are those people, who do cause her to want to spit a few nails in the direction of their foreheads. Hey, just being honest. It’s the only way I roll).

Vashti: I’m pretty laid back for the most part. There are certain things that really bug me, like when people don’t cover their mouths when they cough. I fantasize about stuffing cloth (or something) in their mouths. I worked in the medical field many years and I know what comes out of that mouth, so please cover it!

NJ: OMG, Vashti! One of my biggest pet peeves is when people yawn without covering their mouths! I hate that and I find it horribly disgusting! Every time I see it, no matter the age of who’s doing it, I always think “What poor home training that must have had.”

Vashti: I also think it is terrible manners when someone says “ew” to the food on your plate. Line cutters drive me nuts. Were you raised by wolves?

Okay, last one. My husband is a compulsive door opener. I think he was a doorman in a past life. I can’t stand it when he opens the door for someone and not only do they not say thank you, they also glide straight past him as if people should open doors for them. Makes me want to pull out a cane, hook it to the back of their shirt/blouse and yank them back through the door so that they can open it themselves.

I think you opened up a can of worms here.

    shutterstock_29964307( Are you OK?)

NJ: So, are you neat or messy?

Vashti: For the most part, I’m neat. I can make a mess, but I do clean up after myself quickly.

NJ: Good response although I felt you for a minute, leaning towards the left. That’s the direction of that island I recently purchased to send all messy folks to. So, Facebook or Twitter?

Vashti: I use both but prefer Twitter.

NJ: We’ve come to realize that the internet is giving way to tons of budding friendships. Who would you say is the one person you’ve connected with the most…your internet BFF or buddy?

Vashti: This is a tough question because I’ve met so many wonderful people online in the last four years since I began blogging. Since I joined the RRBC I’ve met so many talented, kindhearted, inspiring and supportive people, many of which I consider friends. It would be too difficult to name them all and I would feel terrible if I left someone out.

    Handclapping gif

(When you realize she’s going to pass on the question because she doesn’t know how to name just one.)

NJ: Vashti, who do you favor most… Nonnie Jules or WonderWoman? It’s OK to be honest.

Vashti: I’ve never met WonderWoman, so I’d have to say, Nonnie Jules. 😉

NJ: Oh, thank you, Vashti, how sweet of you to say. (Although it seems I won the toss by default… “I’ve never met WonderWoman.” Yeah, right!)

    eye rolling gif.gif

We all know that WonderWoman has her truth lasso and Nonnie has…well, just her truths, in the no-nonsense way she forces us to be honest and tell it like it is, especially in our reviews of books we’ve read, whether it makes others uncomfortable or not. In your opinion, which one does a better job of making the world a better place? You can be honest here, too.

Vashti: I believe in being honest and being your true self and not whom others deem you should be. Since Nonnie is a real person I’d have to go with her.

NJ: You’re awfully kind, Vashti. But, WonderWoman IS a real person, too! Now, ONE good INDIE book you’ve read that was so good you wished the entire world would read it.

Vashti: EMPTY CHAIRS by Stacey Danson (Suzanne Burke) is a must-read.

NJ: What was so great about it?

Vashti: EMPTY CHAIRS opened my eyes to many things I didn’t know and taught me many lessons. I’m a fan of books that teach me new things.

NJ: After you read books, do you post reviews?

Vashti: I do most of the time. If the book has a lot of issues and I can talk to the author and communicate my concerns to him or her, I’d rather do that then give them a bad review.

NJ: What do you think readers should base their reviews on?

Vashti: A book review is an opinion that someone has written about another written work. I base my reviews on whether the work I’ve selected fit well within the genre chosen for it. A horror book that doesn’t give you a single chill is disappointing. I also review a book based on the plot, characters and writing style. Is the book entertaining or boring? Are the characters interesting and well developed? Does the story have a good pace or does it drag? Does the book have something unique to offer or have I read this same story a dozen times? There is no book liked by everyone. It doesn’t matter how well written it is.

NJ: That’s true, but you can’t beat a well-written book, no matter how many dislike it. Every time, I’m supporting the well-written book! Vashti, are you one of those who is afraid to be honest in their reviews lest the author becomes upset with you, or, is honesty your best policy, especially in reviews?

Vashti: I’m never afraid to write or speak the truth. However, I believe that if a book is well-written for the most part but has many typos I can better help the author by talking to him/her via email, Skype––whatever, rather than give him/her a 1 or 2-star rating on Amazon. If a book is poorly written from start to finish and makes no sense I have no choice but to give it a low rating. I rarely come across a book like that nowadays, because I’m very selective about the books I read. The books I’ve read lately have been highly recommended.

NJ: Vashti, I’m going to have to offer my opinion here which is a far reach from yours, just to offer clarity. If a book is well-written, there won’t be many typos, if any at all, and yes, I’ve read books from start to finish where there was not ONE typo found. And, I went back to make sure! Typos, missing words, confusion in a story…anything that slows my reading pace when I’m in a story, I can’t label as well-written. Just as the wind is blowing thru my hair as I round the bend of a long stretch of beautiful road, is just the feel I want when I’m reading a book. I want it to just flow. Now, there’s my two-cents. Now, Vashti, how many poorly written books have you read that you gave a high mark to in your review when you knew it was horrible? Be honest, I won’t ask you to name the books here in public.

    Vashti: I’ve never done that.

NJ: Well, Kudos to you! Tell us, are you an author? If so, are you a good one? C’mon, we love honesty here.

Vashti: I am an author. It’s what I was born to do. Yes, I am a good writer but I can always be better, so I will continue to learn and improve. It’s in my nature to always strive to be better.

NJ: That’s good to hear! How long have you been writing?

Vashti: I’ve been writing since I was a kid.

NJ: Are you able to take constructive criticism of your written work?

Vashti: Yes, if a critique will help me improve my writing I’m all for it.

NJ: What’s the name of one of your books?

    Vashti: THE FALL OF LILITH

The Fall of Lilith by Vashti Q

NJ: Vashti, do you have a blog or website? I love GREAT blogs, so would you say that yours is written well enough for harsh critics like me to enjoy?

Vashti: Well, blogs are all about personal preferences. If you enjoy short stories in the fantasy, horror and thriller genres, poetry and occasional articles about issues that I’m interested in such as, bullying, teen depression, child abuse, elderly abuse and animals then you will like my blog.

NJ: (All I wanted to know was is it well-written.) Vashti, which online resource or organization has helped you as an author the most?

Vashti: The Rave Reviews Book Club has been an enormous help to me as an author.

NJ: We’re always super happy when we hear that! Thank you! Why don’t you share with our guests who may not be members, how you’ve been helped by RRBC.

I have met so many inspiring, supportive and like-minded people in the RRBC. They’ve become my online family. I have received so much support in the form of book reviews, social media growth, interviews, podcasts. I believe my author brand has grown more in the last six months since I’ve joined than in the last four years that I’ve been blogging. It’s been great!

NJ: What an amazing testimonial, Vashti! Good for you! But, you know what? I will say, you weren’t just given all that amazing support. You had to do something to get it. In short, you’re an amazing supporter here and when you wear that title in RRBC, so many great things are placed at your feet and so many wonderful opportunities just seem to fall in your lap! Good for you! Is there anything else you’d like to share about RRBC?

Vashti: The RRBC is a community of talented and supportive readers and writers and I couldn’t be happier to be a part of it.

NJ: Have you come across any other online entities like it?

    Vashti: Not at all.

NJ: Neither have I. Lots of copy-cats but none successful or sustaining, it seems. Would you recommend RRBC to your friends and family?

Vashti: I have been recommending it to my writerly friends and bookish friends too.

NJ: What’s your most favorite program or place here in RRBC? (#PUSHTUESDAY, RAVE WAVES shows, Block Parties, Writers’ Conference & Book Expo, BOOKS OF THE MONTH discussions, “ON THE SHELF” interviews, etc.)

Vashti: I enjoy the Rave Waves shows, the Writers’ Conference was a lot of fun and I got to know members I didn’t know before, and it’s been pretty cozy up here On The Shelf! Can I stay a while longer?

NJ: Vashti, although I’d love to hang out with you here all day, this shelf is getting hard on my hiney, so we’re going to wrap this interview up. As they say, you don’t have to go home, but you have to get the heck off of my shelf! LOL! Any final words for our guests today?

Vashti: It’s been an honor to be invited to sit On The Shelf with you Nonnie, thank you very much. I’m excited about being selected as Spotlight Author too. Thank you, everyone, for stopping by and for your fabulous support. I appreciate all of you.

NJ: Vashti, thank you so much for hanging out on THE SHELF with us today! And, thanks for being an awesome member! This has been so much fun! Not once did you come close to having an accident! That’s an amazing feat.

To my guests, please pick up a copy of Vashti’s book.

Have you joined RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB yet? Well, here’s your chance! And, since Vashti was on the “SHELF” today, tell them she sent you.

Hello! My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I'm a writer of Suspense, Thriller, Fantasy and Horror. I also enjoy mixing in some Humor and Romance into my stories.

From the time I was a young kid, writing has been my passion. I've always been a writer I just didn't know it until much later. For me, it is easier to express my thoughts on paper than with the spoken word. I enjoy making people feel an array of emotions with my writing. I like my audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.

My love of animals and nature are often incorporated in my stories. You'll read intriguing things about various animals, nature and natural disasters commingled in my character driven novels.

I love to read almost as much as I love to write. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.

Hello! My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I know, my name is a mouthful, but if you can learn Arnold Schwarzenegger, Saoirse Ronan, Charlize Theron, M. Night Shyamalan, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau––mine will be a snap. ⇒JUST KIDDING!

I share quite a bit about myself on this page (maybe too much?), I don’t know. I’m an open book (no pun intended) to the dismay of some of my friends. Pretty much what you see is what you get with me. I have been told that I have a bizarre sense of humor, a funny laugh and a raspy voice (you’ll hear for yourself when I post vlogs). I apologize in advance. Ha,ha! I hope you enjoy the info..

I blog about my writer’s life and experiences I’ve had. I write fantasy, suspense and horror short stories, articles about current events, social media, writing, anything and everything, and poetry which I share on Fridays (Haiku Friday). I also feature authors, bloggers, poets, artists and other creative types on my blog.

Why is my blog called ‘The Writer Next Door‘? I consider myself a people person and someone who’s very approachable. I try to see the good in people. I’m not easily influenced and I hate malicious gossip. I believe in ‘girl power’ and sisterhood between women, but I also respect and admire men. I’m not scary, although I can be a little weird at times. I’m a kid at heart and love to have fun, but I also take my responsibilities very seriously and work hard to achieve my goals.

  • My train of thoughts on… - https://mytrainofthoughtson.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/10-statements-vashti-quiroz-vega/

My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega, and I’m a writer of Fantasy, Suspense, Thriller and Horror. My first novel, The Basement, was released in August 2013. It was one of the happiest and proudest moments of my life. It was not easy getting my book published. Once upon a time, I was very naive when it came to the publishing process. I thought all I had to do as a writer was to write the book. Soon, I had a rude awakening when I found out that my manuscript had to be edited. Then I discovered I had to get an agent in order to interest a publisher, and I had to write a query letter in order to get an agent! Well, after many months of querying, I finally got my manuscript in the hands of a publisher… who wanted it edited some more. Phew! A year later, my book was finally published. Then I discovered that the ‘good old days’ when the publisher did everything for the writer are over, and I had to do a lot of the marketing myself. It’s been a rough, but weirdly enjoyable ride.

The Basement is a suspense/thriller aimed at a pre-teen/teen audience, but many adults have enjoyed it as well. It is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, of treasure hunts and adventure, and of facing your fears. Its focus is the small-but everything-world of a pre-teen named Robbie, who must pass a terrible test set for him by his alcoholic and abusive father. The boy eventually succeeds, and his courage helps to transform his father. The Basement has been incorporated into the library and curriculum of two middle schools in Florida (my home state). In addition, I have been approached by several other teachers who consider the book a good candidate to be read to their middle grade classes. I am quite excited that I have recently been invited to participate in an event hosted by a Barnes and Noble bookstore in my neighborhood.

I’m working on what I call my Fantasy Angels Series, written for the Adult (18 and older) market. The first installment, Lilith, depicts angels in a unique way. It is a story of many twists, surprises and a bit of controversy. Lilith is currently undergoing the editing process, and I’ve already begun writing the second installment, Dracul.

I love to read almost as much as I love to write. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.

I currently live in sunny Florida, where I work as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Although writing and reading are my passion, I also have other interests. I’m a shutterbug–I love photography–and I also love to travel, draw, hike, kayak, dance, bake, and to watch movies, basketball and UFC fights. As a woman, I’m entitled to enjoy girlie things once in a while, right? I also love fashion, make-up and shopping.

    Guest Author Vashti Quiroz-Vega
970594_405793276204758_797328340_nMy name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega, and I’m a writer of Fantasy, Suspense, Thriller and Horror. Then I found out I had to get an agent in order to interest a publisher, and I had to write a query letter in order to get an agent! It’s been a rough, but weirdly enjoyable ride.

bad160f0ed980ad8986c8f.L._V368839666_SY470_Vashti's Web PhotoThe Basement is a suspense/thriller aimed at a pre-teen/teen audience, but many adults have enjoyed it as well.

From the time I was a young kid, writing has been my passion. I’ve always been a writer—I just didn’t know it until much later. For me, it is easier to express my thoughts on paper than through the spoken word. I enjoy making people feel an array of emotions with my writing. I like my audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.

1044958_396520217132064_555271917_nMy love of animals and nature are often incorporated into my stories. You’ll read intriguing things about various animals, nature and natural disasters commingled in my character-driven novels.

1098126_417221198395299_1347990719_nI currently live in sunny Florida, where I work as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

    THE BASEMENT
    by Vashti Quiroz-Vega

    Book Description
Robbie is a meek boy in New York City who struggles with the desire to prove himself to his friends, his enemies, and himself. Robbie’s father is a stubborn man determined to teach his son through tough love. When he witnesses Robbie being bullied, he forces his son to face his fears. Robbie is sentenced to a frightening challenge––staying in the basement alone for a night. But what lies in the dark recesses of the basement? Will Robbie make it out alive and well? Will the urban legend about the terrifying creatures that hide in the dark basement prove to be true? And most importantly, will Robbie prove to his friends and his father that he is brave enough to take on the challenge? The Basement is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, treasure hunts and adventure, and facing fears. It focuses on the small world of one group of preteens and the very real and wondrous challenges they face.

I never expected a book like this from a lady like this. When I first approached Vashti, who I met through her blog, about an interview I wanted to learn more about the author behind The Basement. I still want to learn more but in truth, I want to know about this book and how it came to be and what else this author has planned for us. I’m going to get out of the way of this interview, simply ask the questions and let you meet . . .

    VASHTI QUIROZ-VEGA

    Vashti's Web Photo@VashtiQV

Ron Cover ShotRW: Vashti Quiroz-Vega. Love the name. Tell us a little about your ancestry. I am very into history. And your name spins all sorts of imagery through the echoes of my mind. And is there a meaning behind your name?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: My first name, Vashti, is Persian in origin and has very little to do with my ancestry, I’m afraid. Vashti is the name of a queen in the old testament of the bible in the book of Esther.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Your book, The Basement available on Amazon, where did the idea come from?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: The Basement began as a short story I wrote in high school. I won an award for it and put it away in a box, along with a bunch of other stories. Years later, I came across it. After reading it again and with the encouragement of others, I decided to expand the short story into a novel.

Ron Cover ShotRW: The book is about an 11-year-old boy and his troubles, how did you connect with the character?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: I have a brother and two sisters. I’m close to all my siblings, but I grew up especially close to my brother (maybe determined by the fact that I was a tomboy). The Basement is loosely based on memories I have from childhood. The main character, Robbie, was inspired by my brother and my nephew, Joshua.

Ron Cover ShotRW: And the abuse parts?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: There has been no abuse in my household, but I did know a child growing up who was verbally and physically abused by a parent. The parent did not try to hide this from anyone. I saw and heard this child being abused on many occasions. This experience and the memory of this child have stayed with me till this day, which is why I tolerate no kind of bullying or abuse of any kind.

An ex-boyfriend once told me that I was a perfect mix of femininity and masculinity because I am feminine and very much a woman, but I am also assertive, straightforward and I love basketball, action movies, UFC and camping.

Ron Cover ShotRW: What did it feel like writing the character of Robbie, the 11 year old boy in the book, as you had to basically become him for periods of time?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: When I wrote The Basement, I essentially became an 11-year-old boy. I felt vulnerable––like my life was not in my control. I guess I felt like a child in a scary world.

Ron Cover ShotRW: For those reading who may not be familiar with you can you give an example of an author and perhaps a book that would give them an idea of what this book is like as far as feel and style?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: That’s a tough one. Some people have compared my storytelling to that of several other writers, including Stephen King and Anne Rice, who are two of my favorite writers and whose books I have been reading for years. So I don’t doubt that there is some of their influence in my writing, but I believe that I’m developing my own style. Not that I wouldn’t love to write as well as Stephen King and Anne Rice, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Are you a character in The Basement?MC_99732309_4

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: Let’s just say that several of the characters in The Basement have some of my personality traits.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Tell us about your writing process. You took a short story and turned it into a full-length novel. How did you go about that?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: As I re-read the story, I added, changed and rearranged sentences, and I replaced and deleted words. I had read so many books and learned so much since writing that story in high school that expanding it was not that difficult. Even now, I feel that I have learned so much since publishing The Basement. I guess that’s how it is with writers. We are constantly reading, learning and improving. I feel that my second book, Lilith, will be much better written than my first, and my third book, Dracul, will probably be better written than my second, and so on. That doesn’t mean any of my books are badly written. It just means that as I learn and gain experience, my work will reflect that. I have noticed this when I compare Stephen King’s earlier books with the books he’s written in the last couple of years. But I have always enjoyed all of his books.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Can you walk us through how you went from complete and satisfied manuscript to now available for purchase? Many will be reading this who haven’t gone through it yet, and since you have on a number of occasions, I know I would personally like to hear it from a pro like you.

Vashti's Web PhotoVASTHI: Wow! You flatter me, Ron. 😉 I’ve actually gone through the entire process only once with my book The Basement. The best advice I can offer anyone who has finished writing a story is to give the finished manuscript to several trusted people and ask for their honest opinions. Then after revisions (if any), hire a professional editor.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Ah, I get the impression you have published several because of how professional everything seems. What other works do you have available and what are you working on presently?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: I have written a variety of short stories, from horror and dark fantasy to sci-fi and romance. You can check them out on my blog.

I’m in the final stages of editing my book Lilith. This is a dark fantasy about angels aimed at a young adult/ adult audience. I’m hoping to have it available in early 2015.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Is there a lot of romance in your work or sensuality?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: There’s always a little romance because I believe that’s part of life and reality. There’s also some sensuality in my work-in-progress because that’s part of who I am, and that part of my personality comes through in the story.

Ron Cover ShotRW: How understanding are your friends and family when the writing mania takes hold of you?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: Some are very understanding, especially other writers because they’ve been there. Others––not so much.

Ron Cover ShotRW: What would be your ideal agent be like to sign with?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: I would love an agent who truly enjoys my story. The editor that’s working with me on my second book ‘Lilith’ truly loves the book. It is obvious by her enthusiasm, the comments she’s made and the questions that she’s asked me. It makes a difference when the agent loves the genre and story. Also, an agent that is hardworking and self motivated is great. One that will stop at nothing to get you the best deal possible for your book. I would love to get into one of the big publishing houses.

Ron Cover ShotRW: Now for a few fun and trivial questions. What’s your go to beverage while writing?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: Water. I know you’re thinking, “boring,” but I prefer to be sharp and focused when I write. Being well-hydrated does that for me. I don’t drink much coffee, beer makes me bloat like a blowfish, wine puts me to sleep, margaritas and rum are fun, but put me in the wrong frame of mind, and I get distracted easily. So while I’m writing, it’s water for me.

Ron Cover ShotRW: What is your escape from writing when you need that break before burnout happens?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: Reading, cooking, baking, hiking, kayaking, getting together with family and friends, watching one of my favorite shows on TV (Criminal Minds, Law and Order, Castle, Modern Family . . .) or going to the cinema, playing with my dog, and other things I shouldn’t mention––not necessarily in that order.

Ron Cover ShotRW: And finally, as a writer, what is your favorite word and why?

Vashti's Web PhotoVASHTI: Wow! There are several words I love, but the first word that comes to mind is “Dulcet.” Why? Because it’s a beautiful word, I enjoy pronouncing it and writing it down. Meaning: 1: sweet to the taste 2: pleasing to the ear 3: generally pleasing or agreeable.

Thank you, Ronovan, for inviting me as a guest author to your awesome blog. I appreciate you.

I want to thank Vashti for taking the time to answer a few questions for us. And I hope she comes back when her next book is due out.

Her various contact information appeared in some links throughout the interview but I am putting them all here together so you can follow her everywhere. Also here are some some fan art of her and one of her characters from The Basement, Natasha. Don’t worry, she won’t mind, I already do and if she will let me follower her she’ll let you too. And we are all about supporting each other here, right?

Quiroz-Vega, Vashti THE FALL OF LILITH Manuscript (Indie Fiction) 8, 1

Fallen angels battle for survival in Quiroz-Vega's (The Basement, 2013) fantasy novel. In the beginning, God created angels. His companions reside in Floraison, a beautiful and joyful location in the lowest level of heaven. Though given free will, they must be obedient and remain chaste. For the angel Lilith, this is a difficult proposition. Though she longs to be first in God's eyes, Lilith questions the rules. Her slyness and disobedience cause turmoil and division among the angels. When God sorts the angels in a hierarchy, Lilith is unhappy. When God creates humans, Lilith is enraged and jealous. She sows the seeds of an uprising, eventually seducing Lucifer and encouraging him to revolt against God. A vicious battle ends in defeat for Lilith, Lucifer, and their allies. They are cast out of Floraison and banished to Earth, changed in form and ability. Some are given monsterlike characteristics, including Lilith, who is now half serpent. Lucifer becomes Satan, complete with red visage and spiky horns. The fallen angels struggle to find each other and battle to survive on the alien planet. They are vulnerable and able to be wounded by elements in their ecosystem. Though the angels can now enjoy pleasures of the flesh, it's often violent and painful, especially for Lilith. Rather than experience heaven on Earth, the fallen angels lie, deceive, and suffer. Lilith craves revenge upon God, the angels, humans, and ultimately Satan himself. Quiroz-Vega offers a dark creation tale, a prologue of sorts to Adam and Eve. It's a compelling narrative that provides background on several well-known, supernatural figures. Though obviously religious in nature, Quiroz-Vega's book strays far from traditional biblical text. Sea monsters, mermaids, and vampires share the stage with angels and demons. And illicit (and explicit) affairs, violent battles, and graphic injuries abound. Quiroz-Vega's prose is incredibly descriptive. The fallen angels, including a transformed Beelzebub, whose "arms and legs appeared gelatinous, punctuated by lumps of broken and calcified bone," are painted with horrifying clarity. A well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.

The Fall of Lilith (Fantasy Angels Series), a high fantasy by Vashti Quiroz-Vega, starts with Book I: Heaven, where Lilith and her fellow angels reside in the bright realm of Floraison. Their life is peaceful but not entirely carefree, as God has set many rules for them. Lilith is not fond of the rules. She likes to manipulate others, and the gift of sight that she received from God fuels her desire for divine power. She’s the catalyst for the rebellion against Him. In Book II: Earth, Lilith and her defeated angels are banished to Earth and their angelic forms are changed. Personally, I prefer book two’s development and intensity. I was more intrigued about what the fallen angels would do next and how they would cope with their new surroundings.

The overall effect of The Fall of Lilith is that it spins an engaging and fresh perspective on the biblical tale of creation, making it a story you can get swept into. Despite its theme, I don’t find it preachy. Instead, as a fan of the fantasy genre, it appeals to me, particularly with the incorporated concept of vampirism and the undoing of Adam and Eve. Characterization is impeccable and character development is distinct, complex, and makes readers invest in them emotionally. You might find yourself lamenting that it’s over too soon, but the great thing is that more can be expected from the Fantasy Angels Series. On the whole, this is a commendable and imaginative work from Vashti Quiroz-Vega.

BOOK REVIEW The Fall of Lilith by Vashti

    BLURB.

In The Fall of Lilith, Vashti Quiroz-Vega crafts an irresistible new take on heaven and hell that boldly lays bare the passionate, conflicted natures of God’s first creations: the resplendent celestial beings known as angels.

If you think you know their story, think again.

Endowed with every gift of mind, body, and spirit, the angels reside in a paradise bounded by divine laws, chief of which are obedience to God, and celibacy. In all other things, the angels possess free will, that they may add in their own unique ways to God’s unfolding plan.

Lilith, most exquisite of angels, finds the rules arbitrary and stifling. She yearns to follow no plan but her own: a plan that leads to the throne now occupied by God himself. With clever words and forbidden caresses, Lilith sows discontent among the angels. Soon the virus of rebellion has spread to the greatest of them all: Lucifer.

Now, as angel is pitted against angel, old loyalties are betrayed and friendships broken. Lust, envy, pride, and ambition arise to shake the foundations of heaven . . . and beyond. For what begins as a war in paradise invades God’s newest creation, a planet known as Earth. It is there, in the garden called Eden, that Lilith, Lucifer, and the other rebel angels will seek a final desperate victory—or a venomous revenge.

    “[A] compelling narrative that . . . strays far from traditional biblical text . . . A well-written, descriptive, and dark creation story.”—Kirkus Reviews

MY REVIEW 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Dark Supernatural Fantasy at its Best!

When I had finished reading this book, I sat back and thought about what exactly it was about it that had totally captured my attention and kept me riveted until the early hours of the morning, long after I should have flipped off the light.

Author Vashti Quiroz- Vega has undertaken a mammoth task in “The Fall of Lilith” and she could have quite easily opted for the easy road in depicting the eternal battle of Good .V. Evil. The fact is that she has not done that. Make no mistake, that is indeed the premise on which this well-written book is based, but this author has none of the stereotypical tried and true characterizations that frequent many books attempting to cover that dark premise.

Instead, we are given a deeper insight into the urges that drive these characters, with Lilith’s character being only one of many that frequent this epic. Lilith, of course, is pivotal and as such her driving characteristics are what influence the narrative. She is multi-faceted with her initial desire to do as her ‘God’ had instructed being overridden by her passionate nature, her guile, and her inability to accept that she was all she could ever hope to be in the ‘heavenly’ sphere.

It is that dissatisfaction, that boredom, and her driving and at times overwhelming desire for something more that drives her. Her clever manipulation of the other supernatural beings (Angels) is a joy to read. There are no boundaries that she does not attempt to tear down by the sheer force of her will. She uses her beauty as a weapon, and the forbidden acts only lead her forward with her need to experience more than this life in ‘heaven’ permits.

I have long been fascinated by the supernatural. This author has delved deeply into the religious aspects that permeate any story that focuses on the ‘angels’ being cast out from heaven, she has acknowledged that, and then taken those understandings and beautifully crafted a vision of the alternative possibilities.

Much has been written by other reviewers that cover the plot very adequately, I prefer to focus instead on the driving force behind the individual characterizations. None of the characters in this book fail to engage me as a reader, they are each capable of arousing my understanding of the ‘demons’ that drive them. I by turns laughed at the dialogue, then caught myself tearing up when hurt was dealt out in the coldest of ways.

This book is not for the faint-hearted reader. The author has clearly stated that it is written with an adult audience in mind.

The scenes in this book that capture the essence of lust and desire are written with a clever hand, I found them totally necessary in the plot development and as such, they were never a grab for the ‘sex sells’ probability we so often find in fiction.

We witness the struggle to overcome the initial hardships on a dangerous ‘Earth’. The need to belong to another being, and the ultimate desire to survive at all costs, regardless of who may get caught in the trap of our own making along the way. The thirst for revenge is hovering darkly as the book reaches it final pages. This is the first book in a series. I will most certainly be back to read the remainder.

Author Vashti Quiroz-Vega has captured the essence of Dark Supernatural Fantasy. She should be proud of her accomplishment.

Review: In the reimagining of heaven and earth, Vashti Quiroz-Vega has created a vast and rich story with characters that leap off the pages. Taking names of angels we know from the Bible she has brought them brilliantly to life. Rebelling against God, Lilith seeks to cause discord amongst her fellow angels, in order to rise above her creator. Not to go into too much detail, but the motives, actions, and fallout are well mapped out and give the story believability.

With a unique twist on the fall to Earth, Ms. Vega builds on her creation. The Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve, is the final battleground over Lilith’s need for vengeance against God.

I could not put this book down. The story hooked me and kept me glued to the pages. I highly recommend The Fall of Lilith.

Book Review: The Basement (Robbie’s Rite of Passage) by Vashti Quiroz-Vega
July 15, 2013 | Filed under: book reviews
This book follows the tale of a boy whose drunken father wants him to “man up,” forcing him to spend a night in the creepy basement of the apartment complex as a rite of passage, killing all the giant rats rumored to live there. The book begins in a rather pleasant way, with the terror end-loaded into the last 40 percent. The strength of this book is the situation. Robbie is a sympathetic character, and his dad (and some other characters) are bullies enough to make us root for Robbie. There are also some characters that join Robbie, making us like him further.

The weakness of this book is the telling of the story. It’s told in third person omniscient, so there’s a lot of “head hopping” from what one character is thinking to what another is thinking—sometimes even within paragraphs of each other. As a result, I never felt like I got to know any of the characters well enough—I wasn’t shown much through their perspectives. Rather, there were lots of scenes comprised only of “telling” me what a character was like, stating an adjective and then following up with an example. As a reader, I much prefer being shown. For such a short novel, I also found a lot of repetition of words and sentence structure that sometimes served to slow down the plot in places where I wanted to be tearing through the pages to see what happens to the characters.

Still, the situation presented in the tale is creepy, at times even terrifying—and at the end (in the basement), it will have you burning through the pages to see if your worst suspicion is correct.

I would recommend the book to a younger readership, provided they like scary stories. I can see this story as a “gateway drug” to harder horror.
