WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
John Marshall is an Emmy-nominated comedian and television writer who has written for such well-known programs as The Chris Rock Show, Politically Incorrect, and Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. Marshall is also the author of the satirical novel, The Greenfather, which combines the environmental movement with mobsters. Commenting on his book in an interview posted on the Three Rooms Press Website, Marshall told Constance Renfrow: “I decided to write a novel because I wanted to write something longer than the jokes and sketches I had done for TV. I’ve written sitcom pilots and film scripts, but I wanted to see what I could do in this format. I found I had more control over my characters and situations, which facilitated my style of humor better. I’ve been a stand-up for twenty years, and the book has a stand-up flow. It sounds good out loud, which is why I’ve been doing public readings. I also wanted to write about the environmental movement, which needs more humor.”
The Greenfather follows organic grocery store owner Simon, who runs Good Eggs. Simon runs the best organic outfit in New York City, and his father, Francis Raccione, runs the city’s most dangerous crime syndicate. After Francis is murdered, Simon is tapped to take over the family, and while Simon would rather run his store, it’s an offer he can’t refuse. To make the best of things, Simon tried to incorporate sustainable environmental practices into the mafia, and he instructs all of his inherited shell companies to recycle. He also puts his henchman, such as Fat Tony, Bulbous Benny, and Diabetic Reynold, on an organic diet. Despite his best efforts, Simon’s new role as mob boss leads the Nutritional Security Council to cancel his store’s license. Simon is also targeted by an overweight hitman, which forces Simon and his wife, Marla to go into hiding.
As Barry Wightman noted in the online Washington Independent Review of Books, “this terribly clever, trying-so-hard-to-be-a-nonstop-laugh-riot debut novel is, mercifully, a lightning-fast read, best suited to a beach.” Wightman went on to advise: “With no pretentions for lit fic, no aspirations for high-end satire, veteran Emmy-nominated comedy writer Marshall goes straight for the gags, the tasty, groan-worthy puns, the joke-a-minute pace of 21st-century TV.” A Publishers Weekly critic was even more positive, asserting that “Marshall’s debut novel is a hilarious satire,” and concluding: “Even Don Corleone’ would laugh at this clever, funny story.”

The Greenfather
John Marshall. Three Rooms, $15.95 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-1-941110-51-5
Emmy-nominated TV writer Marshall's debut novel is a hilarious satire, delightfully poking fun at the
Godfather movies, organized crime, organic food, health food stores, vegans, and society's goofy
fascinations with gangsters and granola. Simon owns Good Eggs, Incorporated, New York City's top organic
grocery store. He is also the son of mob boss Francis Raccione, head of the city's most feared crime family.
When Francis is killed in a mob hit, Simon is forced to take control of the family, becoming the exclusive
caterer to the mob. He hates being the capo, but declares he'll make crime green. Instead of shakedowns and
hits, he orders proper trash collection, responsible recycling, and better eating habits, confusing overweight,
unhealthy goons like Fat Tony, Bulbous Benny, Diabetic Reynold, and Plus-Size Paulie. Because he is now
considered an unsavory character as a crime boss, Simon loses his store to a shady competitor, and the NSC
(Nutritional Security Council) revokes his store license. When the city officials complain that the city is too
clean, disrupting the function of government, Simon and his mob wife, Marla, go into hiding, attracting the
attention of the inept FBI and a chubby hit man who runs out of bullets. Even Don Corleone' would laugh at
this clever, funny story. (May)
