Maryam Mafi is a writer and translator living in London, England. She was born in Iran and lived there until 1977, when she moved to the United States to attend college. She studied at Tufts University and Georgetown University. Mafi is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association.
She has written, edited, and translated books, many of which have to do with Rumi, the Sufi poet who lived during the 1200s. Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin are the translators of the 2012 volume, Rumi’s Little Book of Life: The Garden of the Soul, the Heart, and the Spirit. This work contains 196 of Rumi’s poems, none of which had previously been translated to English. The poems guide readers on how to take part in their individual inner journey. On her own, Mafi translated Rumi Day by Day, which was released in 2014 and contains poems from the Sufi mystic, which are arranged to be read each day. They are meant to heighten one’s spiritual connection, to inspire, and to aid with one’s meditation practices. She collaborated with Kolin again to edit and translate Rumi’s Little Book of Love: 150 Poems That Speak to the Heart. This volume also includes poems that had not previously been translated. The two also edited the 2016 work, Rumi’s Little Book of the Heart. This volume feature poetry from Rumi on the subject of relationships.
In 2017, Mafi released A Little Book of Mystical Secrets: Rumi, Shams of Tabriz, and the Path of Ecstasy. This volume differs from Mafi’s other works in that it focuses on figures other than Rumi. Specifically, it chronicles the life of Shams of Tabriz, also known as Mowlana Shams. Shams was one of Rumi’s most influential teachers. Mafi divides the book into two parts. In the first, she offers biographical information on Shams. Born in Tabriz, Iran in 1185, he was the son of an imam. Shams became an itinerant artisan, traveling throughout the region selling his wares. In 1244, Shams came to Konya, Iran, where he met Rumi. The two had a tense initial exchange, but Rumi ultimately came to respect Shams’s wisdom. The two remained close friends for many years, until Shams moved to Khoy, where he died. In the second half of the book, Mafi includes quotes from Shams.
A contributor to Publishers Weekly offered a favorable assessment of A Little Book of Mystical Secrets. The contributor asserted: “After reading this insightful work, readers interested in Sufism … will be delighted to have further insight.”

Maryam Mafi was born and raised in Iran. She went to Tufts University in the U.S. in 1977 where she studied Sociology and Literature. Biography
Maryam Mafi left Iran in 1977 to study Sociology and Literature at Tufts University in the United States. While reading for her Master’s degree in International Communications in Washington DC, she began translating Persian literature. Her thesis on the relationship of literature and social change and the bridging together of cultures has been a pivotal force in her work.
Reading Rumi’s poetry has led her to a ‘re-education’ in her own language and connecting with her spiritual heritage. She has participated in many readings of Rumi’s poetry and has brought forth the beauty of Rumi’s words in the original language. Maryam lives in London and travels to Tehran several times a year to study with her teacher who is an Iranian authority on Rumi.
Together with Azima Melita Kolin they have two books of Rumi poetry published by Thorsons: ‘Whispers of the Beloved’ and ‘Hidden Music’. At present they are working on their third book of Rumi ‘The Four Gardens’.

A Little Book of Mystical Secrets: Rumi, Shams of Tabriz, and the Path of Ecstasy
Maryam Mafi. Hampton Roads, $25.95 (194p) ISBN 978-1-571-74-745-7
Mafi (Rumi's Little Book of Life) turns the spotlight on some of Rumi's most notable and influential
companions to provide a richer picture of the Sufi poet's milieu. In this easily readable and slim volume,
Mafi tells the story of Mowlana Shams, aka Shams of Tabriz, who was arguably Rumi's principle catalyst
and inspiration. In the book's two principal parts, Mafi amasses a brief and illuminating biography and a
collection of notable sayings from Shams of Tabriz. Readers will appreciate how the peripatetic Sufi went
into seclusion with Rumi and led the poet to let his heart sing through music, dance, and poetry; his
instigations distinctly shaped the Rumi known today. After reading this insightful work, readers interested in
Sufism, poetry, or Rumi himself will be delighted to have further insight and clarity about the influence that
an otherwise almost unknown Muslim mystic had on one of the most celebrated poets of all time. (Apr.)
