Juliet Lyons is a British writer. She is the author of novels in the paranormal romance genre.
Dating the Undead
In an interview with Joyce Lamb, contributor to the Happy Ever After website, Lyons discussed the plot of her first book, Dating the Undead. She stated: “Dating the Undead is a light paranormal romance set in a world where vampires are recently acknowledged members of society. The heroine, Silver, meets Logan, a vampire, after being kicked out of a party one New Year’s Eve and the pair share a steamy kiss. Silver, convinced that vampires are the way forward in the dating stakes, joins V-Date.com, a dating website specializing in human/vampire relations. Disappointed when none of her deadly dates compare to her New Year’s Eve hunk, she allows herself to be recruited by a special police division investigating vampires.” Silver begins informing the Scotland Yard division on her interactions with vampires she has met through the dating website. Meanwhile, Logan’s master, called an evil maker, sends Logan on a mission of revenge. Logan and Silver finally reconnect. Thought they tell themselves they do not want a serious relationship, they cannot help but develop strong feelings for one another. The two become even closer when both of their lives are in danger. Lyons explained how she came up with the idea for the story in an interview with Elicia Hyder, which appeared on Hyder’s self-titled website. Lyons stated: “I had just completed my first story, a YA paranormal romance, and didn’t plan on writing another for a long time. But the idea of writing a vampire novel wouldn’t go away. I started to imagine a world where vampires were ‘out of the closet’ and no longer a threat and how they might fare in the dating world alongside humans.” Lyons continued: “After that, it came together pretty quickly. I wanted a heroine who would only date vampires because they were better looking than human guys. Silver was born! My original plot line was very different to the one I ended up with though.”
Critics offered favorable assessments of Dating the Undead. “Relatable characters and a well-crafted setting make this a promising start to an intriguing series,” asserted a Publishers Weekly writer. Kristina Giovanni, reviewer in Booklist, noted that the book featured “hot and heavy scenes that take the sexy-vampire trope to an all new level.” A Kirkus Reviews contributor described the novel as “a fun introduction to a paranormal series that combines the familiar with the new to bring a fresh spin on the vampire romance.”
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Drop Dead Gorgeous follows Dating the Undead in Lyons’s “Bite Nights” series. This volume focuses on the relationship between a vampire named Vincent Ferrer and a human woman, Mila Hart. Vincent is still pining for the love he lost 300 years ago. He has been distracting himself with his work as an investigator for Scotland Yard. He is handling a case of a serial killer vampire, who meets his victims on the V-Date.com website. Vincent catches the vampire as he is on the verge of killing Mila. Mila’s traumatic experience leaves her wary of vampires, but she makes an exception for the dapper Vincent.
Drop Dead Gorgeous received mixed reviews. A writer in Publishers Weekly suggested: “Despite the predictable story, the novel’s titillating erotic scenes and witty characters will continue to draw readers in.” A Kirkus Reviews critic remarked: “There’s an element of suspense, though it quickly gets lost between the main characters’ constant ogling.” The same critic described the book as “a tad superficial, but at least it doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Juliet! Please tell us a bit about your new release, Dating the Undead.
Juliet: Dating the Undead is a light paranormal romance set in a world where vampires are recently acknowledged members of society. Disappointed when none of her deadly dates compare to her New Year’s Eve hunk, she allows herself to be recruited by a special police division investigating vampires and their potentially dangerous ways. This throws Logan back into her life. He is sent by his overlord boss to counteract these human ‘honey traps’. Much hilarity and snarky banter ensues …
Joyce: What distracts you the most when you’re trying to write?
Juliet: The Internet usually, and I seem to spend an awful lot of time just staring out the window.
Joyce: Do you write by the seat of your pants, or do you carefully plot your stories?
Juliet: I’ve tried both, though usually I fall somewhere in between. I’ll start with a rough plot and character arcs but usually end up deviating from the path. I think most writers expect this to happen. The characters come to life as you write them so it stands to reason they’re going to slowly start running the show and taking the story in a different direction.
Joyce: Who are three romance authors who turn you into a fangirl?
Juliet: Marian Keyes is my favorite author. Her books are full of wit and charm and I’ve read everything she’s ever published. The day she followed me on Twitter was one of the best moments of my life!
I’m also a J.R. Ward fan. I’m on book 11 in her Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I’m always blown away by how real her characters are. She weaves such an awesome blend of light and dark moments.
Modern authors aside, I’m a complete Bronte fangirl. Last summer I visited the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth where the sisters lived and it was absolutely amazing. I even jumped a rope so I could touch the table where Emily wrote Wuthering Heights. Yes, I’m a rope jumper. Beware.
Joyce: Is there a TV show that you’ve recently binge-watched?
Juliet: I’ve just finished watching Outlander season two. I watched the whole thing in a few days and I loved it! The acting and everything about the show is so slick. I’ll never understand why it doesn’t win more awards.
Joyce: What TV show or other activity interferes with your writing schedule?
Juliet: At the moment I’m watching Vampire Diaries season two, and Gilmore Girls. I try not to get too addicted to TV because it eats up too much writing time. Reading probably interferes with writing more than TV. I read at least a book a week. It grounds me.
Joyce: What are three romance novels on your to-be-read list?
Juliet: My to-be-read list grows bigger by the day… But at the moment I really want to read Wanted and Wired by Vivien Jackson, Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet and Under Her Skin by Adriana Anders.
Joyce: What are you working on now?
Juliet: I have just finished writing Loving the Undead, the third book in the V-Date.com series. The heroine of this novel is a vampire and I had a lot of fun switching the roles around and getting to know her and her past. As for what’s next, I’m not too sure. I would definitely like to write more paranormal stories. I’m toying with an idea about angels…
Thank you so much for having me!
Joyce: Thanks, Juliet!
About Dating the Undead:
Woman seeking vampire:
Likes to keep things casual
Absolutely no poetry
Zero romance required.
Silver Harris is over clingy men—maybe men altogether. But when she shares a toe-curling kiss with a sexy Irish vampire on New Year’s Eve, she wonders if maybe it’s human men she’s fed up with. Silver turns to the popular vampire dating site, V-Date, only to discover that vampire men are just as unimpressive as their mortal counterparts. And her mysterious hottie? He’s nowhere to be found.
Can’t a girl catch a break?
Logan Byrne can’t get that sassy redhead—or that kiss!—out of his head. When his boss assigns him to spy on V-Date, he meets Silver again. Turns out, the police are recruiting humans to snitch on vampires through the dating site. As the snark and sparks fly, feelings between Silver and Logan deepen. But, when old demons resurface—literally—Logan isn’t sure he can shield either of them from the dangers that have been lying in wait for centuries.

DATING THE UNDEAD
Silver Harris lives in a world just like ours, but with one key difference-vampires are a reality. Indeed, a very sexy reality, as Silver discovers when she meets Logan Byrne, a cocky, yet lovable Irishman, who is a member of the undead. Unable to forget their steamy encounter on a London Street, Silver decides human guys will simply no longer cut it. She joins a special dating site to meet more of his kind-think Match.com for vampires. This draws her into a world more dark and sinister than she has ever imagined. When Logan shows up with a warning, Silver is undeterred, and the pair soon begin a passionate affair. But for them, love comes at a deadly price.
INTERVIEW WITH JULIET LYONS
Me: What was it like participating in Harlequin’s SYTYCW contest?
JULIET: To be honest, it was pretty painless. Unlike some of the other authors, who wrote books specifically to enter the competition, ‘Dating The Undead’ was already complete. I added my tags and BOOM! Job done. However, it was VERY exciting to get the email saying I’d made the top 50. I’m still on a high about that. Even if I go no further than the top 50, I’ll die happy, haha.
ME: Where did you get the idea for Dating The Undead?
JULIET: I had just completed my first story, a YA paranormal romance, and didn’t plan on writing another for a long time. But the idea of writing a vampire novel wouldn’t go away. I started to imagine a world where vampires were ‘out of the closet’ and no longer a threat and how they might fare in the dating world alongside humans. After that, it came together pretty quickly. I wanted a heroine who would only date vampires because they were better looking than human guys. Silver was born! My original plot line was very different to the one I ended up with though.
ME: Who is your favorite Dating The Undead character and why?
JULIET: My favorite is probably Silver, my main character. I wanted a feisty, over confident heroine. One who had been around the block a few times. Silver is the type of girl who was always in trouble at school—smoking behind the bike sheds, making out with boys in the park—the one the teachers said would never come to any good. I like that she isn’t afraid to say exactly what she thinks. She isn’t a role model for young girls by any stretch of the imagination, but I like to think there’s a little bit of Silver in all of us. As a feminist, I’m tired of all these weak, goody two shoes heroines. Why should the men characters get to have all the fun?
ME: What makes Dating The Undead unique in the world of vampires?
JULIET: Well, I could say that it’s unique because in their world vampires have been accepted, but Charlaine Harris did that long before me. Without tooting my own horn, I like to think it’s quite amusing in parts. Not many vampire stories have humor. I’ve tried to combine myth and fantasy with an everyday chick lit sort of feel, sort of a Marian Keyes meets True Blood vibe.
Also, there are no abusive alpha types in this story. Yes, Logan is hot and Irish and cocky, but he is always on an equal footing with Silver. The whole angle of the dating site is perhaps the most unique part of the story. That bit is my hook for sure.
ME: Other than Dating The Undead, what is your favorite vampire novel?
JULIET: My favourite vampire story is a book called ‘The Silver Kiss’ by Annette Curtis Klause. Back in the early nineties, this book was the one being passed around at school. Mostly because of the title (the promise of a kiss!) and the fact that on the cover, a hot guy and a girl were in a clinch. So I borrowed it from someone or another, and promptly fell in love. Aside from the kiss, it’s a beautiful story about a vampire and a human girl falling in love. I can’t recommend it enough—though of course, it might be considered rather dated for today’s teens. I regularly cyber stalk the author, but she doesn’t seem to have a website. I would love to tell her how much I adore her book and that I named my main character ‘Silver’ after its title.
ME: When you sign a publishing contract, what will be the first thing you do to celebrate?
JULIET: Haha. Good question! I would probably go out for dinner with friends, the ones who have been putting up with all my writing crap, and then afterwards get incredibly drunk in a bar and tell them how much I love them. Though if I don’t get a publishing contract, I’ll probably end up doing that anyway. It’s a win win 😀
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU, JULIET! Remember us little people when you’re a big, famous author. And I expect an invite to dinner and drunken mayhem to celebrate! 🙂

Charming and racy romance meets rousing mystery in the deft launch of Lyons's paranormal erotic V-Date.com series,
set in present-day London. Silver Harris doesn't let the men she dates get too close, and they still manage to let her
down. When she meets stunning Irish vampire Logan Byrne, she's swept away despite herself, but she doesn't get his
number. Her stepsister nudges her toward V-Date, the online dating service that connects humans and vampires.
Meanwhile, Logan's boss, believing Scotland Yard is using V-Date to gather intelligence on the recently revealed
vampire world, assigns Logan to monitor V-Date matchups, which brings him face to face with Silver again. As they
grow close (to their mutual surprise), enigmas from both their pasts surface. The book sometimes treads well-worn
paths--the descriptions of Logan's Romani heritage are full of mystical "gypsy" cliches--and the pace can drag a bit, but
Lyons nevertheless keeps readers invested until the end. Relatable characters and a well-crafted setting make this a
promising start to an intriguing series. (May)

Dating the Undead. By Juliet Lyons. May 2017. 352p. Sourcebooks/Casablanca, paper, $7.99 (9781492645306).
Lyons launches a new paranormal-romance series set in modern-day London and introducing Silver Harris, the ultimate
single girl who can flirt her way out of any situation but whose charms prove to be no match for the preternatural allure
of Logan Byrne. An Irish Gypsy vampire with sexy green eyes and deceptively innocent dimples, Logan is not your
typical bloodsucker. These two are perfectly matched in their mutual desire for a fun fling, and Lyons delivers with hot
and heavy scenes that take the sexy-vampire trope to an all new level. But things take a dangerous turn when Logan's
evil maker returns for revenge and Silver is recruited by Scotland Yard to pass along supernatural secrets she gleans
from her V-Dates (arranged on a vampire dating site), while working undercover. Fans of paranormal-romance pioneers
Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer will enjoy the not-so-subtle nods to the popular Sookie Stackhouse and Twilight
series scattered throughout Lyons' steamy vampire adventure.--Kristina Giovanni

Lyons, Juliet DATING THE UNDEAD Sourcebooks Casablanca (Adult Fiction) $7.99 5, 2 ISBN: 978-1-4926-4530-6
In a London where vampires publicly exist, a young woman takes to online dating to try to reproduce a magical
experience. On a New Year's Eve that's going nowhere for her, Silver Harris meets vampire Logan Byrne and has quite
an encounter. Knowing she'll never see the handsome vampire again, Silver decides to try out V-Date, an online dating
service connecting humans to vampires, in search of him--or at least someone who could reproduce that marvelous
feeling. When Logan shows up seemingly at random (but with an agenda of his own--or more, his vampire leader's), the
two fall into a whirlwind relationship. Neither is looking for anything permanent, but both have stronger feelings for the
other than they would care to admit. When dangers related to both the dating site and Logan's past present themselves,
the two have to figure out what they want and how they want to proceed. Debut author Lyons, who first made a name
for herself on Wattpad, introduces readers to a new universe in which vampires are known to exist, though that of
course does not take away from government agencies' suspicion of them. Silver and Logan may be the first in this new
universe, but with the combination of fun, angst, and sizzling, sexy times, they are not going to be the last. A fun
introduction to a paranormal series that combines the familiar with the new to bring a fresh spin on the vampire
romance.

Romancing the Undead: V-Date.com, Book 2
Juliet Lyons. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-1-4926-4533-7
The second V-Date.com paranormal erotic romance, set in a version of our world in which vampires are well integrated
into human society, delivers the same charm, steam, and suspense as its predecessor, Dating the Undead. Vampire
Vincent Ferrer lost the only woman he ever loved more than 300 years ago and has held himself apart from romance
ever since. In present-day London, he's a Scotland Yard inspector. He manages to intervene just before a murderous
vampire who's been finding victims through V-Date, which matches vampires with humans, attacks human Mila Hart.
Mila tried V-Date on a whim, but after barely surviving the attack, dating a vampire seems like a particularly terrible
idea. Nonetheless, she can't resist Vincent's old-world appeal, especially since he's the only one who can protect her
from the killer, who's still at large and hunting her. Vincent and Mila's romance hits familiar beats as they pretend to
date, then give in to their profound attraction, then worry about their future. Despite the predictable story, the novel's
titillating erotic scenes and witty characters will continue to draw readers in. (Oct.)

A woman gives up on human men to give vampires a try, namely in the form of a hot, blond, and fanged detective. Mila
Hart was devastated to learn that her boyfriend of two years happened to be married and had two children. To get back
in the saddle, she hits up V-Date, a dating website with vampire clientele. Her first date with the undead seems to be
going swimmingly until the vamp tries to kill her. In the nick of time, Mila is saved by law enforcement, which includes
the devastatingly handsome Inspector Vincent Ferrer. Unfortunately, Mila's date escapes in the fray, a disappointment to
the team that's been tracking him for months; Mila wasn't his first victim. Vincent's immediate attraction to Mila's calm
under pressure is palpable, and he takes a vested interest in seeing to her well-being after the attack. But as a man--even
an undead man--dedicated to his job and hundreds of years old, he realizes love is only a fleeting distraction. However,
mutual attraction is another story. Mila is a quirky heroine with her deep love of movies, constantly making
comparisons to how events in her life might mirror famous scenes in cinema history. This also works as a coping
mechanism for Mila as she tries to regain her life after heartbreak. Despite being a vampire, Vincent is rather normal,
unlike typical overbearing alpha heroes of paranormal romance. He's easygoing, reassuring Mila that not all of his kind
are killers out for blood, but as a leading man he needs a bit more...bite. Since Mila's attacker is still out there, there's an
element of suspense, though it quickly gets lost between the main characters' constant ogling of one another during
rather tense moments. A tad superficial, but at least it doesn't take itself too seriously.
