WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Sheryl Lister is a pediatric occupational therapist who loves to read and loves to write. In 2009 she decided to devote herself to writing contemporary inspirational romance fiction. She found success with the Harlequin “Kimani Romance” imprint, which was created in 2006 to showcase fiction featuring African American characters. Lister’s readers appreciated stories of professional women reluctant to risk their careers in the name of love—and the men who convince them that they are worth the risk.
Kimani Romances
Lister made her debut with Just to Be You. It is the story of Janae Simms, a special education teacher whose romantic ventures have left her with no desire to repeat the failures of the past. Jazz musician Terrence “Monte” Campbell harbors similar reluctance, but he cannot deny his attraction to her. He would need a lot of patience to convince the skittish object of his affection that he is worthy of her love.
It’s Only You introduces emergency room nurse Simona Andrews, who fled the notoriety of a public breakup scandal in Northern California for the anonymity of Los Angeles. When she encounters music executive Donovan Wright in a hospital hallway, they feel an instant attraction for each other, but his status as a media celebrity makes Simona wary and secretive about her past. When the old scandal resurfaces with an ugly twist, Donovan must consider whether he can trust her in the future, and Simona wonders if he will be able to keep his promise to protect her. “Simona and Donovan make a great match,” observed Susan Plummer at Romance in Color. B. Nakia Garner reported at RT Book Reviews: “This tale hits on every emotional level and will leave readers feeling inspired, romantic and thoroughly satisfied.”
In All of Me, teacher Karen Morris trades the angst of a failed relationship for a relaxing Caribbean cruise with the rest of her best friend’s wedding party. She doesn’t expect to cross the path of handsome widower Damian Bradshaw, and he is not looking for anything more serious than a shipboard fling. “All of Me is focused on the building up of the relationship,” noted a writer at Hot Sauce Reviews. She rated the book as “decent,” albeit formulaic, while noting that “the romantic moments have their charms.” At RT Book Reviews, Garner rated the book “tame” but also mentioned that “the story has a natural flow.”
Lister continued to hone her skills with miscellaneous e-books and novellas. Her readership continued to grow. Fans appreciated the theme of reluctant characters who transcend past heartaches and learn to trust in love. They also enjoyed learning about women in unusual occupations: industrial hygiene in the case of Perfect Chemistry and professional event planning in Made to Love You. Another frequent bonus: becoming reacquainted with characters who first appeared in secondary roles in previous stories.
The Grays of California
In 2016 Lister introduced a winning combination with the potential to become a continuing series. The anchor of the series is the highly successful family business of Gray Home Safety based in Los Angeles. Tender Kisses is the story of beautiful but aloof public relations executive Siobhan Gray. She has been the target of several opportunists who would use her to wiggle their way toward the family fortune. Siobhan is still recovering from the last attempt when she meets Justin Cartwright. She can’t resist his charms, but she uses a phony last name to protect her privacy and family connections. Justin has a secret too. Coincidentally, he has developed a state-of-the-art security alert system that he desperately wants to pitch to Gray Home Safety, and he dare not be distracted by this tantalizing woman who is gradually taking over his life. “Sweet kisses, amazing dates and great conversation make both Siobhan and Justin reevaluate what they want out of life,” Garner noted at RT Book Reviews. When they learn the startling truth about each other, they must decide if there is any hope for a happy ending. “Don’t worry,” commented a blogger at Harlequin Junkie. “It’s just going to take some communication and a lot of trust.”
Places in My Heart reveals that Siobhan is not the only family member whose future hangs in the balance. Corporate attorney Morgan Gray intended to work for the family business until her impossible dream of becoming a sports agent comes true. Football star Omar Drummond hires her to replace his potentially crooked agent, and sparks fly between them from the beginning. Morgan turns out to be a tenacious negotiator, and Omar turns out to be a phenomenal lover. With tabloid journalists nipping at their heels, they try to conceal their growing passion for each other, but self-restraint can only go so far: “capitulation is inevitable,” reporter Plummer at Romance in Color. A Publishers Weekly contributor observed that “the emotional conflict … lacks any real depth,” but Plummer pointed to “Morgan’s loving and genuine nature” and Omar’s sensitivity and dedication to his mentally troubled family member as evidence of “three-dimensional characters with depth and real-life emotions.” The author of Reading in Black and White mentioned that “Lister does an excellent job of not only developing Morgan and Omar’s romance but also showing their growth as individuals.”
Siobhan and Morgan also have three brothers: Brandon, Khalil, and Malcolm. Giving My All to You shines a light on Brandon, who is pouring all of his energy into plans to take over the family business someday. His plan hits a snag when he rescues beautiful Faith Alexander from a car crash and finds himself falling in love. He doesn’t realize at first that Faith came to Los Angeles on a mission to reunite with her absent father or that her father happens to be a partner in Gray Home Safety. The author of Reading in Black and White hinted: “There’s another storyline in this book outside of the romance and it completely tugs at your heartstrings.”
Khalil is the star of A Touch of Love. He is a loyal customer at Lexia Daniels’s café, and the beautiful former model is determined to seduce him. Khalil is happy to oblige, but only if there is no real emotion involved. He is convinced that true love will always remain beyond his grasp. Lexia is willing to move on from a bitter divorce, but Khalil is unable to put his past behind him—so far. Readers hope to learn more about the third brother, Malcolm Gray, in the next installment of the family saga.

In Lister's unsatisfying second Grays of Los Angeles contemporary (after Tender Kisses), attorney Morgan Gray finally gets a chance at her dream career of being a sports agent, putting her at odds with the original plan of her staying in the family business. Morgan knows football as well as the players do; however, being a woman' makes it difficult for her to break into the business. Then football star Omar Drummond hires Morgan to replace his agent, whom he suspected of embezzlement. She proves to be a fierce negotiator who doesn't indulge in league politics, and Omar feels her physical beauty only enhances her intelligence. His gentlemanly nature soon thwarts Morgan's plans to keep their relationship strictly professional, but the tabloids are eager to portray him as a philanderer, and Morgan doesn't want her career to be tainted by gossip of sexual favors, so they attempt to keep the relationship secret until after he signs his contract. The emotional conflict is based on a double standard--Morgan demands unquestioning trust from Omar but refuses to give him the same--and lacks any real depth, and it's difficult for readers to empathize with the cranky, unyielding heroine. TENDER KISSES (4) by Sheryl Lister: Siobhan Gray spends her life working at her family’s business to prove they can count on her. She makes no room for dating since most men tend to only want her for her money and her family’s connections. Her guard is up when she meets Justin Cartwright, a self-made man who is also focused on his career. Though neither are in the market for anything serious, they can’t seem to stay away from each other. Sweet kisses, amazing dates and great conversation make both Siobhan and Justin reevaluate what they want out of life. The author provides a lot of background on both of the characters and allows their relationship to naturally progress. Readers will revel in the journey from strangers to love.

ALL OF ME (3) by Sheryl Lister: Karen Morris is taking a break from dating to focus on her teaching career and her goal of becoming a principal. While aboard a cruise for her best friend’s wedding, Karen locks eyes with Damian Bradshaw, a widower of five years looking to finally let go of his grief. Both are reluctant to start up a relationship that extends beyond the cruise, but passion prevails. Back on the mainland, the issue of Karen living in California and Damian living in North Carolina is one of a few problems the couple must overcome. There is a lot of repetition, and the conflict introduced is tame at best. Some parts were predictable, but the story has a natural flow.

REVIEWER: Susan Plummer | RATING: AREVIEW: In Sheryl Lister’s latest novel, IT’S ONLY YOU, a young couple’s love is tested by their inability to trust. Life is finally settling down for emergency room nurse, Simona Andrews, following a year of heartbreak and tragedy. Even her love life improves when a handsome stranger comes to her rescue. Music Exec, Donovan Wright, is immediately drawn to the caring and capable nurse. After a few dates, however, he senses she is holding something back. Simona wants to tell Donovan about her personal life but after discovering his connection to the media world, she is doubtful about continuing their relationship.
A sudden crisis forces Simona to come clean with Donovan. He cannot believe Simona would hide something this important and wonders whether he can trust her going forward. Then Simona is unexpectedly tossed in the middle of an old scandal and new fabrications emerge. Her first instinct is to run again until Donovan sets aside his misgivings to protect her. The stakes are higher this time and Simona doesn’t know if she can trust Donovan to protect her. Donovan realizes his promise to love and protect Simona may not be enough to make her stay. Throughout the story, Lister reveals enough of the plot to keep the story engaging without feeling rushed. The story is set in Los Angeles which makes sense because the city is big enough for Simona to achieve anonymity.
Simona and Donovan make a great match even though she appears more introverted while he lives in the spotlight. They are similar in that neither trusts easily. Simona remains wary until Donovan slowly and lovingly whittles away her reluctance. When Simona shakes Donovan’s trust he has to come to grips with his own issues before he can approach her again. Simona’s character is giving and selfless and her best gift is receiving a first class partner and protector in Donovan. Rediscovering earlier characters and how they have evolved is always refreshing. The title perfectly describes Donovan and Simona’s feeling of completeness with each other.
Communication is current and the diction very contemporary. The various exchanges read like everyday conversations overhead in a hospital or coffee shop. Having Simona and Donovan communicate with others in their career field also contributes towards character development and to the realism of the overall plot.
IT’S ONLY YOU is a must read and will quickly become a favorite. The characters are realistic and their backstories emotionally wrenching. The plot, while not overly complex, is lightly laced with subplots that subtly enrich the story. IT’S ONLY YOU is a consistently, and completely pleasurable read.

REVIEWER: Susan Plummer | RATING: B+REVIEW: In Sheryl Lister’s latest novel, Places in My Heart, (The Grays of Los Angeles) a sports agent may win big or lose it all by falling in love with her first high profile client.
Attorney Morgan Gray enjoys corporate law but her true passion is being a sports agent. When football superstar, Omar Drummond, approaches Morgan to take over as his agent; she cannot believe her luck. Working with Omar is the perfect opportunity Morgan needs except for one predicament; their instant attraction. While Omar sees no problem in Morgan’s ability to negotiate his new contract while they are dating; Morgan fears the sport industry will not take her seriously if she dates a client. Walking away from her feelings for Omar is not an option but Morgan is troubled whether she can mix business with pleasure and still come out a winner.
Places in My Heart progresses at the perfect pace for romance, transitioning between the storylines surrounding the main and secondary characters; overall, keeping the story interesting and entertaining.
Omar Drummond presents an intriguing character because, while he comes across as cocky and confident, he is also grounded. Having a family member with mental problems Omar cannot solve; despite his wealth, provides a constant reality check. Morgan Gray is a good fit for Omar because she is beautiful, assertive and knows what she wants. It is apparent Omar and Morgan’s romantic relationship is bolstered by a friendship based on mutual interests. Other characters from Lister’s previous novel, TENDER KISSES, give the novel and the reoccurring characters a welcomed sense of continuity.
The communication throughout Places in My Heart is engaging and contemporary. Each character’s tone matches the image created by the author. Omar and Morgan exchanges are vivid, playful and heated. It is clear from the onset that while business brought them together; love would solidify their bond. Pure chemistry exudes between Omar and Morgan and their capitulation is inevitable.
I enjoy novels that bring the real world into their stories. Tackling PTSD gives realism to the plot and portraying three-dimensional characters with depth and real-life emotions. The issue humanizes everyone affected regardless of socio-economic background. The title, PLACES IN MY HEART, is made clear after comprehending Omar’s initial reluctance to trust love again after a disastrous first attempt. However, due to Morgan’s loving and genuine nature, all the places in Omar’s heart he purposely “closed off were starting to open, one room at a time.” PLACES IN MY HEART also applies to Morgan as she harbors misgivings about athletes because of a former cheating ex who was also professional athlete. This is truly a good follow up to TENDER KISSES.

Omar Drummond is a pro football superstar with a body that’s a pure work of art. But Morgan Gray is forbidden to act on their chemistry, or repeat their impulsive kiss. Proving her worth as a sports agent means securing the notorious celebrity as a client, not a lover. Yet between flowers, sweet notes and heady hotel interludes, Omar is shamelessly seducing her…
Other agents—and exes—have tried using Omar as a meal ticket, and he’s closed himself off from emotional entanglements. With Morgan, it’s a whole new playbook. Smart and tough, she can negotiate a contract and turn him on all in one go, and he craves more. But in matters of trust, he’s just fumbled badly. To win her, he has to show her the man he can be away from the pitch and the limelight, and hope that this time they’re both playing for keeps.
“I can’t wait to sample your sweetness again. This time I think I’ll conduct a thorough taste test. I don’t want to miss one spot. Would you like that?”
Places In My Heart is the perfect book to read to escape into a world of romance for a few hours. Morgan is at a crossroads because she living the life her father wants her to live but she’s itching to follow her own dreams. And, when opportunity knocks in the form of athlete superstar, Omar, she can’t pass it up.
Omar is perceived as a playboy and it is an image that he wants to change especially when Morgan enters his life. Omar must be on his A-game to win over her heart. Lister does an excellent job of not only developing Morgan and Omar’s romance but also showing their growth as individuals.
Places In My Heart is a very quick read and will hold your attention from beginning to end. It was quite surprising to see the issue of soldiers readjusting to civilian life and PTSD played such a integral role to the storyline. It added a layer of depth that took this book beyond the typical cookie cutter romance book. I have now read a few books by Sheryl Lister and it’s safe to say that she is an author that I will continue to support!

How hard is it come up with story after story, something that you hope will enthrall readers?
So far, I don’t have a shortage of storylines in my head, thank goodness! Sometimes, I wish I could turn my brain off for an hour or two because a plot line will come to me in the middle of the night. Like musicians hear music in everything, I hear plots. As far as enthralling readers, it is always my hope that they will enjoy the stories I write. The readers have been so supportive and I appreciate every one of them!
What one thing are you most proud of in your life?
Wow, that’s a tough one, but I’d have to say my girls. I am so proud of my three girls and am amazed watching them grow into the women God created them to be.
But she’s also very personable and humorous…
Out of all your college experiences, what was the most fun?
It would have to be going to all the home football and basketball games…screaming in the stands, riding the rooter bus…big fun!
If I came to your home and looked in your refrigerator, what would I find?
If you looked in my refrigerator, you’d find fresh fruit and vegetables (especially during the summer), lots of water (because I will drink half a gallon or more per day), some leftovers and stacks of my Sargento Balanced Break 190 calorie snacks, which is my go to food with half an apple when I’m on deadline.
What did you want to be when you were 12 years old?
When I was twelve I wanted to be a pediatrician or a sports medicine doctor who worked with athletes, specifically football players. Yep, been a football fan all my life!

A hero’s touch
Faith Alexander’s guardian angel has a body built for sin. Ever since she woke up in the hospital after a car crash, her rescuer, Brandon Gray, has been by her side—chivalrous, caring and oh-so-fine. Faith came to Los Angeles to find her long-lost father, only to learn that he’s a partner in Brandon’s family business. How can she reveal that her inheritance stands in the way of Brandon’s career dreams?
All Brandon’s focus is on his long-coveted role as CEO—until he stops to help a mysterious beauty. With chemistry this irresistible, he’s ready to share a future with Faith, but he feels beyond betrayed to discover what she’s been hiding. If desire and trust can overcome pride, he’ll realize he’s found the perfect partner in the boardroom and the bedroom…
img_3372.jpg
“When he started dating, his friend had drilled into his and his brother’s heads how they should treat a woman – always open doors, stand when she enters the room and never expect her to pay when you take her out. Brandon had taken those instructions to heart and didn’t see that changing anytime soon.”
BRANDON!!!! He was a supporting character in previous books in the Grays of Los Angeles series, but this was his time to shine and he definitely does!! He isn’t “broken” or hurt from a previous relationship. He is a strong, alpha male that simply believes in being single and is the love ’em and leave ’em type until he meets Faith.
There’s another storyline in this book outside of the romance and it completely tugs at your heartstrings so be prepared for that. Back to the romance, Lister writes a tale that is full of heat, passion, and love. The story is so well-written that you get completely lost in it and you’re at the final page before you’re ready for it to end. Giving My All to You is the perfect reminder that when you least expect it someone will come along and change your opinion about love!

PERFECT CHEMISTRY - Sheryl Lister

EBOOK
JULY 2016
Reviewer: Brenda Larnell | Rating: A
CONTEMPORARY ROMANCEREVIEW: PERFECT CHEMISTRY by Sheryl Lister is another Novella is the collection titled Hot Undercover Bosses: 12 Sensuous Romance Books. This story is set in Sacramento and the Bay Area of California, and it is the perfect backdrop for this contemporary romance.
The heroine, Victoria Daniels, and the hero, Michael Avery, are attracted to each other at their first meeting. Their instant chemistry sets the tone for some very hot and steamy interludes. Victoria and Michael are employed in the same profession, the field of Industrial Hygiene. Who knew? Victoria works in the lab testing samples, but her goal is to be certified in this field which would allow her to collect samples in the field and not just be confined to lab work. This dilemma becomes a critical subplot of the storyline as we discover that Victoria’s career goal is being derailed by her previous lover and underhanded supervisor, Curtis Smith, who refuses to certify two years of work experience that Victoria needs. On the other hand, Michael is not only a Certified Industrial Hygienist, but he is the owner of the firm and lab where Victoria unknowingly goes for an interview. If she accepts the job, Michael will be her boss. For Victoria, it’s a Déjà vu Curtis Smith moment all over again, and she is not a happy camper with Mr. Michael Avery. At this point, the chemistry is not so perfect. Why didn’t Michael reveal his real status? He withholds that information from Victoria because of a hurtful past experience that affected him deeply. It’s complicated.
The minor characters take on the roles of advisors and confidants. Michael’s longtime friend and partner, Tyler, and Victoria’s cousin, Alicia, are two that come to mind. They each help our hero and heroine navigate the rocky road of romance.
The dialogue is crisp and contemporary allowing the storyline to flow smoothly. Kudos to author, Sheryl Lister for stepping out the box and giving her hero and heroine an occupation that is not the usual billionaire CEO, doctor, nurse, lawyer, etc. that we find in stories. It gives PERFECT CHEMISTRY a fresh take.
This is the second story I’ve read in the Hot Undercover Bosses series, and if they are any indication of the remaining Novellas, this series is a sure fire hit! I liked PERFECT CHEMISTRY, and I believe you will enjoy it, too. It’s a great read!

Tender Kisses by Sheryl Lister will grab your attention with its well-written words and fully Tender-Kissesdeveloped characters, who may leave you breathless while they embark on an engaging romance despite their reservations.
Siobhan Gray is a public relations goddess for her family’s company. Gray Home Safety is very successful and many men have tried to get in her good graces just to get a piece of the company. In fact, one man actually came pretty close until Siobhan discovered how low down and dirty her fiancée was and called off the wedding before it was too late. Because of that life lesson, she doesn’t date. She holds herself away from life and concentrates on work. She’s gun shy about getting into another relationship and refuses to let herself and her family down over a man again. When she meets Justin Cartwright, the sparks are there but in the back of her mind, she knows she can’t risk her heart again.
Justin is innovative, seductive, and very persistent. He knew he wanted Siobhan from the moment he saw her and he wasn’t taking no for an answer. It took some time, but eventually he got Siobhan to lower some of her walls and meet with him for coffee, then dinner and so on, until a relationship developed. Their relationship was a slow burn since both Justin and Siobhan are workaholics and each have their own reasons for wanting to stay casual.
“He was falling for this woman and wasn’t sure a casual, no-strings-attached relationship was really what he wanted anymore.”
The more they saw each other, the hotter the chemistry became, but career aspirations have put the relationship in a tight spot. Justin has developed an alert system that any company would love to back, but Justin is after Gray Home Safety and neither he nor Siobhan realize what a small world it is, especially since Siobhan never gave Justin her real last name. Misunderstandings happen and their relationship is threatened, but don’t worry a happy ending is at the end of the horizon for these two, it’s just going to take some communication and a lot of trust.
I really enjoyed reading about Siobhan and Justin’s relationship and thought the romance was very nicely done. I’m looking forward to more books about the Gray family in the future. Fans of Brenda Jackson would enjoy checking this book out.

We get a hint of a connection between our hero and heroine in ALL OF ME after the wedding ceremony of Damian Bradshaw, Kyle’s partner in their safety consultant firm and, Karen Morris, the principal at the same school that Melissa works. In IT’S YOU THAT I NEED, Damian and Karen take on the role of side characters. IT’S YOU THAT I NEED unfolds the story of Kyle Jamison and Melissa Tucker who, after a ten-month separation, come together again because of a threat on Melissa’s life. Melissa is a school psychologist by day, a women’s shelter counselor by night, and someone is threatening her life.
In spite of the fact that she is the one who ended their relationship, she calls on Kyle for help. Kyle gladly becomes Melissa’s personal bodyguard. He sees it as an opportunity to also rekindle their relationship. While Kyle and Melissa are navigating through the love reconnection waters, the threats escalate. As the heroine comes face to face with the villain, our hero appears, and BAM the threat is over! The remaining 31% of the story centers around Kyle and Melissa solidifying their relationship. The one and only negative that I find in the story is there is no character development of the person who tried to off the heroine. There’s nothing like a devious, psycho villain you love to hate. We don’t get the opportunity to find out what makes this villain tick. A little back story or indirect characterization is in order. On the plus side, we are reunited with Terrence and Janae Campbell of JUST TO BE WITH YOU, the book that started this series.
If you are not familiar with this series, I suggest that you add the books to your TBR list. IT’S YOU THAT I NEED is the last one, and I recommend it.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
REVIEWER: Susan Plummer | RATING: B+REVIEW: In MADE TO LOVE YOU by Sheryl Lister, two people are given the rare chance to rediscover the love they lost. Events planner, Vivian Michaels is discovering true love with Architect, Devin Simms, until someone from her past heartlessly ruins everything. Fearing shame and discovery, Vivian abruptly ends their flourishing romance. Devin never understood the true reason Vivian ended their relationship. A few years later, while traveling to attend his friend’s wedding in Jamaica, Devin and Vivian’s paths cross again and this time, he is determined to get answers. Vivian’s feelings have not changed even after two years but she is still ashamed of what happened and doesn’t know how to tell Devin. She wants another chance with Devin but the only way to truly begin again is if she tells him the truth. Unfortunately, the truth may set Vivian free but it may also free Devin of any feelings he still has for her.
MADE TO LOVE YOU is very interesting as it moves through the twists and turns of Vivian and Devin’s story. Devin is a solid guy who seems ready to settle down until Vivian breaks up with him. Vivian is a self-made success but remains embarrassed by her past. By not being upfront with Devin from the beginning, she is now afraid of any reprisal. Despite concealing such an important secret, Vivian is a good person. This is clear from the sacrifice she makes to prevent further intrusion into Devin’s life. Vivian and Devin have a close-knit group of friends who add further depth to the story, whether they are being good or not so good.
The story is set on an island which is the perfect place for a steamy romance. The dialogue is very realistic to the characters because Devin comes across as an honest and direct person and this is how he interacts with Vivian and his friends. Vivian is more mysterious and her way of communicating is more thought out and self-conscious; maybe because she is afraid of revealing too much.
MADE TO LOVE YOU is another installment of the Reunited in Paradise series which includes ALL OF ME. In both novels, Lister creates realistic characters that pull you into their situations and keep you entertained. The story is a fast and fun read and the title MADE TO LOVE YOU perfectly illustrates Devin and Vivian’s unbreakable connection.

Made to Love You by Sheryl Lister
I enjoyed reading this book and here’s why:
The story line was there and believable. It embodies the idea that second chances and sometimes even third are warranted and can lead you to the person you really love. You just know and Vivian and Devin knew even if they didn’t want to admit it to themselves. I thought it was well written and very romantic. I loved that the sex scenes were minimal and that the story kept me guessing and wanting to know what was going to happen next. A great romantic story. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

All of Me, huh? It takes guts to title a book so soon after that song by John Legend, which just refuses to die even now. Fortunately, there is an element of slow burn romanticism in this story to make the story seem less like a wannabe.
Karen Morris is currently not looking for a boyfriend or even a fling after having some bad experiences with an ex who couldn’t keep it in his pants. She goes on a cruise to the Caribbean and, sure enough, meets Damian Bradshaw, who in turn is egged by his friends to find someone to have a fling with. Damian has been celibate since the death of his wife a while back, and now his friends are pestering him to sleep with anyone but Karen, who apparently wears a sign on her that only men could see, a sign that says, “Enter here and be married to me forever!” Damian, however, finds that Karen is the only woman on the cruise that intrigues him. He is thinking of wooing a girl back home, however. So what now?
All of Me is focused on the building up of the relationship, and it’s a pretty decent read. No one does anything particularly dumb here, and the romantic moments have their charms. There is nothing too memorable about them or their actions, I’m afraid, as they are pretty much standard where the romance formula is concerned: the same over-analysis, the same insecurities, the same “I just want us to be friends!” drama, et cetera. Still, everything comes together pretty okay.
The author doesn’t seem to trust her romance being able to convince anyone by itself, however, as she also introduces so many people insisting that Karen and Damian are meant to be. Given how little they know about Damian or Karen, they come off more like the author’s mouthpieces blasting into my ears about her characters’ true love rather than believable secondary characters in their own right. Also, Damian’s friends can be quite juvenile in their talk about hooking up. Yes, guys may trash talk about women and sex all the time, but there is something about these guys’ conversations that feel artificial and forced.
At any rate, All of Me, is a decent read that has its moments, but at the same time, it doesn’t rock the boat or shake things up much. It’s not telling any story that hasn’t been told by many other books in this line in the past.

oogie-1
Just to Be With You, Sheryl Lister’s debut effort for the Kimani line, plays out like a familiar song and dance: elementary school teacher Janae Simms meets jazz crooner Terrence “Monte” Campbell at his concert, gets invited backstage, and eventually lets him into her life and heart. I almost said “backstage” instead of “life and heart”, but I figure that may mislead you folks into thinking that this is that kind of romance, and no, no thanks is necessary for my restraint.
It’s a simple story, and under any other circumstances, it could have worked wonders. For some reason, however, the author has to turn Janae into an over the top caricature of the humorless killjoy heroine who acts as if anything fun would simply kill her, with unfortunate results. At the start of the story, Janae is dragged to a concert of a hot and talented guy, without having to pay for the good seat she ends up planting her rear end on, and she acts like she’s a cow being dragged to the abattoir. But the moment she sees the hero, she feels a connection to him as quickly as she starts coming up with excuses as to why the two of them simply won’t live happily ever after. Janae can’t take things easy – everything is do or die – and her pessimistic attitude suggests that she’s bound for a nervous breakdown soon. Everything about her screams “crazy stalker in the making”.
The poor dear jumps quickly to conclusions, flounces when she could have just yelled at the man and cleared some communication issues in the process, and generally acts like she knows she would be dumped soon and that would be the most awful thing ever. The smallest thing could make her fly off the handle. Okay, so she has had one lousy relationship in the past, and it’s very likely that her job has left her unhinged, but here’s the thing: she doesn’t need romance. She needs stress management classes. Janae is crazy.
If just dating Monte turns her into this wildly melodramatic and paranoid creature, can you imagine how she’d be after she’s married him? He’d hit the road, meet women who would throw themselves at him. Tabloids would link him to hot women regardless of whether he’s really sleeping with them or not. And here poor Janae would be stuck in her special ed classroom, steam coming out of her ears as she imagines her man with those other women. She’d have to be committed before the year is out.
Given that Janae is already making plans for forever just because she’s dating and sleeping with Monte, poor Monte comes off as pretty cruel because the poor man just wants a good time with a beautiful woman. He doesn’t do that long-term thing. With another woman, that kind of attitude is perfectly okay, but since he’s doing this to Janae who is clearly not capable of dealing with normal relationships, the whole thing feels… I don’t know, it’s like seeing a grown-up playing basketball with a baby. The whole thing feels horribly lop-sided and I can’t help feeling sorry for the baby.
The biggest problem with Just to Be With You is the horribly mismatched couple. The author’s one-dimensional characters are all wrong for one another, and the happy ending is not believable at all as a result. For a romance novel, it never feels right from start to finish.
