SIDELIGHTS

Chalon Linton works as a fiction writer. Her major influence is the work of Jane Austen, and the themes Austen employs feature frequently in Linton’s own work.

An Inconvenience Romance serves as Linton’s introduction to the fiction world and centers on protagonists Charles Brumley and Leah Hastings. The two of them have been betrothed since they were very young and spent the whole of their lives in one another’s company with this end goal in mind. Their fate takes a sudden turn when Charles develops cold feet following the death of his father. He rejects the prospect of marriage, instead choosing to live a different and freer life. Leah lacks such options, and instead busies herself with trying to find a new suitor who is more willing to take her hand in marriage.

This pursuit lasts for nearly a year until Charles makes his return, eager to pick up where he left off with Leah. What he does not expect is that Leah has moved on. Charles is torn. Despite his initial unwillingness to marry, he has always held deep feelings for Leah. At the same time, Leah cannot deny how strongly she feels for Charles, and decides to try to fix the damage caused to their relationship. The two begin to keep company with one another again, yet soon find not all is as picturesque as they had hoped. One of Leah’s other suitors approaches with a dastardly plan. He intends to blackmail Leah by publicly shaming her family with information they have long tried to keep hidden from the world. Leah immediately finds herself at an impasse. While she desperately wants to be with Charles and fulfill her destiny, she does not want to risk the well being of her family.

A Publishers Weekly reviewer said: “Regency readers seeking a chaste story will find it here.” A reviewer on the Books Are Sanity blog remarked: “An Inconvenient Romance is well worth your time if you love the regency era!” Bonnie Harris, a writer on the Bonnie Gets a Say blog, commented: “Overall it was a wonderful story that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good regency romance.” On the Just Commonly blog, one contributor expressed that “themes of love and forgiveness [are] presented in a seamless fashion.” A reviewer on Min Reads and Reviews stated: “An Inconvenient Romance is a very enjoyable story with fantastic characters.”

It takes more than a passing familiarity with Jane Austen to craft a Regency romance, as demonstrated by
Linton's debut, which is weak in plot and style. Leah Hastings and Charles Brumley, childhood friends and
neighbors, squabbled growing up but always expected to wed as adults. However, when Charles inherits his
father's country estate at age 22, he flees to the city, declaring it too soon to settle down. Leah, wounded by
his defection, encourages the attentions of another man. Charles gets the immaturity out of his system and
returns to Derbyshire 10 months later, but it may be too late to regain Leah's love and trust. The book suffers
from overwrought characters who always believe the worst of each other. Leah and Charles narrate
alternating chapters in first person, which only serves to make the reader want to lock them in a room
together to put an end to their misunderstandings and anachronistic fondness for the word okay. A
predictable romance does little to mask Linton's inexpert employment of several words where one would
suffice, and inaccurate use of historical terms. Regency readers seeking a chaste story will find it here but
may wish they had looked further. (Mar.)

Book Summary:

The countryside of England provided an idyllic backdrop for Charles Brumley's and Leah Hasting's childhood. Neighbors and best friends, the pair passed many happy days racing through the rolling hills of Derbyshire. Everything was perfect—until Charles ruined it all and abandoned Leah for university.

Six years later, the former friends are thrust into each other's paths once more. Leah had been looking forward to the ball, an opportunity to further her acquaintance with the handsome Mr. Wilkins—but when she sees Charles's familiar face through the crowd, her traitorous heart leaps.

Charles faces his own struggle: he has loved Leah since he was fifteen years old, yet it seems he is too late—it appears that her affections are otherwise engaged. As the pair tentatively renews their friendship, the spark between them in undeniable.

After so many years apart, leah endeavors to reconcile her feelings toward her once cherished companion. But when a conniving revival for Charles's attention approaches Leah, the threat is clear: give up her association with Charles or a devastating secret about her family will be revealed. Faced with an impossible decision, Leah must make a choice—the ruin of her family or the ruin of her heart?

My Review:

An Inconvenient Romance by Chalon Linton

I really loved the beginning of this book where the author gives us a glimpse into the lives

of Charles and Leah when they were younger and carefree in their friendship. Then we fast

forward to their parting when he goes off to school and all of a sudden society dictates that

they treat each other with formality instead of familiarity. A series of misunderstandings

and arguments ensue and the remainder of the book becomes the hero and heroine trying

to work these misunderstandings out. Added into the mix was a very awful meddling old

biddy and the story takes another twist. Well written and interesting, An Inconvenient

Romance is well worth your time if you love the regency era! I received a copy of this book

via the publisher and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rating: sweet romance

AN INCONVENIENT ROMANCE by Chalon Linton

AN INCONVENIENT ROMANCE by Chalon Linton. This was a very cute story. I had a smile on my face through most of it. I liked the how the stakes kept getting higher. The character development was great. Once I got past the Prologue, which had some POV issues, the story flowed nicely. There were a couple more places that had POV issues, but overall it was a wonderful story that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good regency romance.

The countryside of England provided an idyllic backdrop for Charles Brumley's and Leah Hasting's childhood. Neighbors and best friends, the pair passed many happy days racing through the rolling hills of Derbyshire. Everything was perfect—until Charles ruined it all and abandoned Leah for university.

Six years later, the former friends are thrust into each other's paths once more. Leah had been looking forward to the ball, an opportunity to further her acquaintance with the handsome Mr. Wilkins—but when she sees Charles's familiar face through the crowd, her traitorous heart leaps.

Charles faces his own struggle: he has loved Leah since he was fifteen years old, yet it seems he is too late—it appears that her affections are otherwise engaged. As the pair tentatively renews their friendship, the spark between them in undeniable.

After so many years apart, Leah endeavors to reconcile her feelings toward her once cherished companion. But when a conniving revival for Charles's attention approaches Leah, the threat is clear: give up her association with Charles or a devastating secret about her family will be revealed. Faced with an impossible decision, Leah must make a choice—the ruin of her family or the ruin of her heart?

With a sweet beginning of childhood memories, An Inconvenient Romance by Chalon Linton drew readers in, hoping to see the liveliness and courteous manners of a Regency period romance. We are not disappointed. As we read on, we are now driven to continue not by the tender fancy of childhood friendship, but the development of misundertandings, miscommunications and heartaches. Protection of one's love ones may spur a decision that one may regret, but we can be sure the sound and oftentimes "hit in the gut" wisdom from family and friends will drive through. I enjoyed the plot very much, though it's not as lovey-dovey as I'd expected, but it brought about reflection.

The plot was a strong element for me, yet I couldn't bring myself to connect or love our main characters, Leah and Charles. There's a certain amount of disconnect and assumptions, but it could be the constant change of their point of views. I felt it was a little too much, to a point that it confused me a bit until I return to the chapter heading to see. So that was a little out of sorts for me. Yet, I think the story itself made it up for sure. Themes of love and forgiveness presented in a seamless fashion.

"We all need forgiveness...the good Lord knew that from the beginning." (199)

My Review

An Inconvenient Romance is a very enjoyable story with fantastic characters. I loved the point of view changes. It really helped me truly get to know Leah and Charles and appreciate their intentions and how each felt about each other. My heart broke for each of them as their misunderstandings would hurt feelings even more. There were a couple inconsistencies that were bothersome. If they knew each other so well growing up, I felt they would have communicated a little better during all of this. Leah was put in a tough situation by a cruel woman, so I do see the problems that made it hard for her to confess her feelings. That being said, I enjoyed Leah and Charles's back and forth banter with each other. That did fit the part of them knowing each other so well when they were younger. I did appreciate the supporting characters and their roll in the book, to help push things along and encourage.

4 out of 5 stars. I look forward to more from this author.
