SIDELIGHTS

Keely Brooke Keith has become most well known through her contributions as a musician and writer. She plays bass guitar alongside her husband, John Martin Keith, as well as numerous other artists. She has also penned several books, all of which draw from her Christian faith as well as her interest in old frontier settings. “I try to tell stories that are comforting, thought provoking, and encouraging,” she explained to an interviewer on the Engrafted Word, in reference to her intentions for her books. “I hope readers get to the end of my books feeling like they’ve gone on an adventure and they’re better off for it.”

The Land Uncharted

According to Keith, her inspiration from one of her earlier novels, The Land Uncharted, came from two major interests. “I’ve always loved maps. […] Then as an adult, I researched my family history. Most of my ancestors moved west in the middle of the 19th Century,” she said to Kate Fisher, an interviewer on the Huffington Post website. “They traveled in groups like so many Americans at the time and it made me wonder: what if instead of going west a group of families wanted to find a whole new land and got on a ship?”

The Land Uncharted takes place in a world that is both futuristic, yet rooted in the past. Its central protagonist is Lydia Colburn, a young woman who works as a licensed doctor in a remote island village. However, she soon encounters Connor Bradshaw, having arrived there unintentionally after living through and fighting a devastating war. Connor soon takes to the village, its customs, and the chance to build a life with Lydia. However, numerous obstacles stand in their way of a life together. A Publishers Weekly contributor felt that “[a]n inadequate background for Connor leaves his character and his quick adoption of the Land incomplete.” A reviewer on the Will Bake for Books website remarked: “If you enjoy intriguing suspenseful romances, The Land Uncharted is for you!” She added: “I highly recommend to anyone looking for something both fresh and interesting.” To Be a Person blogger Miranda A. Uyeh commented: “Keith has a way with words that provokes humor so that you raise your brow and while you chuckle.”

Uncharted Inheritance and Aboard Providence

Uncharted Inheritance centers on another member of the Colburn family. Bethany is on the verge of adulthood and eager to begin her life on her own terms: defying her community’s marriage traditions in order to embark upon an independent career. However, Bethany’s life is turned askew when she encounters a man who is new to her village and carries a dangerous illness. He also threatens the well being of the community through his differing beliefs, which Bethany finds exciting. She finds herself being pulled in by him, yet this attraction may lead her toward nothing but trouble. Robin E. Mason, a writer on the robinsnest212 blog, expressed that the book is “[a] compelling read, with every bit as much intrigue and mystery as the first two books in the series.”

Aboard Providence focuses on a group of families, all of the Christian faith, who aim to emigrate from the United States to the country of Brazil. However, one member of one of these families—a young man by the name of Jonah Ashton—finds himself being pulled unwillingly back to his home state in order to take part in the journey. He doesn’t want to join his family, but feels he has no choice but to at least temporarily honor their requests. Yet while he plans to eventually go back to the state of Pennsylvania, where he can finish his medical degree, a burgeoning attraction to a young and intelligent woman threatens to derail Jonah’s goals. On the Christian Chick’s Thoughts blog, one contributor wrote: “I found it diverting but not enthralling.” Other reviews expressed more positive sentiments. One Publishers Weekly reviewer remarked that the book “features a faithful, colorful cast that face the unknown with grit and determination” and, in conclusion, called the book “a fresh and satisfying story.”

All Things BeautifulAbove Rubies, and Uncharted Hope

All Things Beautiful stars Hannah, a young woman who wants to become a writer. However, her familial duties keep her from pursuing this dream. She eventually gains the chance to publish some of her work, yet the man who has agreed to help her out wants to first ensure her work is up to snuff. “This is a sweet story with a message of overcoming self-doubt to find your true potential,” remarked Remembrancy contributor Suzie Waltner. “Sure, there are some hiccups along the way, some disappointments, but in the end, those things just make the outcome more rewarding.”

Above Rubies follows the life of Olivia, an ambitious woman whose calling lies in teaching. However, her community disagrees with her goals. On the Life, Love, Writing blog, Keith talked with S.B. Williams about what led her into writing the novel. “As I wrote Above Rubies, the story gripped my heart,” she remarked. “Actually, if you read Aboard Providence, you’ve met these two, but it was a superficial meeting. Their depth and strength has left an indelible mark on my soul.”

Olivia finds herself struggling to find support in terms of offering her village’s children an official education—until she meets Gabe, who wholeheartedly supports Olivia’s efforts. However, Olivia must also contend with her burgeoning feelings for Gabe as well as a secret that could topple her goals. A reviewer on the Iola’s Christian Reads blog called the book “a must-read for all Keely Brooke Keith fans, and anyone who enjoys historical Christian romance.”

Uncharted Hope centers on Nicholas and Sophia, who have the potential to start up a wonderful and fulfilling relationship, yet Sophia’s personal issues stand in their way. It is up to Nicholas to convince Sophia that their relationship is worth pursuing. On the To Be a Person blog, Miranda A. Uyeh remarked: “Keith has mastered the sophisticated art of handling plots, characters, and all the elements between sci-fi and frontier-style fiction—and garnished with romance!—with a finesse that allows her to delicately but sturdily fuse them all neatly to reveal a stunning display of literary bliss!”

    Biography
Keely Brooke Keith writes inspirational frontier-style fiction with a slight Sci-Fi twist, including The Land Uncharted (Shelf Unbound Notable Romance 2015) and Aboard Providence (2017 INSPY Awards Longlist). Keely also creates resources for writers such as The Writer’s Book Launch Guide and The Writer’s Character Journal.
Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Keely grew up in a family that frequently relocated. By graduation, she lived in 8 states and attended 14 schools. When she isn’t writing, Keely enjoys playing bass guitar, preparing homeschool lessons, and collecting antique textbooks. Keely, her husband, and their daughter live on a hilltop south of Nashville, Tennessee.

Keely blogs about writing, faith, and bookish news here.

Where did the idea for the Uncharted series come from?
The books in Keely’s Uncharted series are known for their mix of historical fiction, science fiction, and romance, but her desire to write stories started long ago. As a child, Keely would paper her bedroom walls with maps out of National Geographic Magazine. She often stared at the wide blue swaths of ocean on the maps and wondered if land existed that no one knew about.
While researching her family history as an adult, she became fascinated by the group migrations to the American West. She wondered what would happen if instead of going west, a group of families left the United States on a ship, got lost at sea, and ended up on that hidden land. She wrote down the idea and put the story aside to continue her family research.
Then in 2013 her husband, Marty, challenged her to write the book. She accepted his challenge and looked over her story notes. That’s when she decided to start the series a few years in the future (2025), have the rest of the world embroiled in World War III, and drop a modern navy pilot into the Land to show the cultural contrast. Once she started writing The Land Uncharted, it only took a few months to write each of the first three books in the Uncharted series.
In 2014, while The Land Uncharted was being released, Keely was busy writing the founders’ story. The Uncharted Beginnings series starts with Aboard Providence, which was released in October 2016.
Keely also writes resources for writers, including The Writer’s Book Launch Guide and The Writer’s Purpose Journal.

Keely Brooke Keith on Inspiration, Writing a Series, and Fan Mail

    By Kate Fisher

Keely Brooke Keith is the author of the Uncharted series. Her novels are known for weaving together elements of history, science fiction, and romance. We recently collaborated to produce the audiobook version of her first novel, The Land Uncharted. I sat down with Keely to talk about her series, audiobooks, and life as an author.
The Land Uncharted is centered on a young doctor living in a preindustrial society untouched by the outside world since 1860. Where did you find inspiration for the story?
I’ve always loved maps. When I was a kid my grandma saved National Geographic maps for me. I would paper my bedroom walls with them. I often stared at the wide blue swaths of ocean on the maps and wondered if there was any land there that we just didn’t about. Then as an adult, I researched my family history. Most of my ancestors moved west in the middle of the 19th Century. They traveled in groups like so many Americans at the time and it made me wonder: what if instead of going west a group of families wanted to find a whole new land and got on a ship? I wondered what that settlement would be like several generations later and decided to drop a modern man into the middle of it to find out.
The next novel in your Uncharted series is out now, and book 3 is slated for release in May. Did you plan on writing a series from the very beginning?
Yes. I wanted to write a series about one family where each book focused on a different sibling. This series arc is so multi-faceted that after telling Lydia’s story in The Land Uncharted, I was able to continue the threat of the outside world while focusing on Levi’s story in Uncharted Redemption. And Bethany’s story in Uncharted Inheritance... well that’s when it all breaks loose!
I had a blast working with you on the audiobook of The Land Uncharted. What initially got you thinking about releasing an audiobook?
When I told friends about signing my first publishing contract, several remarked that they didn’t have time to read so they’d wait for the audiobook. I’m not sure if they were kidding or not, but I immediately started researching audiobook creation.
What has surprised you about being an author?
Reader response! I never imagined I’d get fan mail. Well, it’s not mail these days—it’s emails and Facebook messages and links to reviews they want me to see. Every little encouragement is huge to an author because we spend most of our days writing alone. I also love the questions from readers about the Land. The Land is a product of my imagination, but I ended The Land Uncharted by putting geographic coordinates in the epilogue. Readers have messaged me that they’ve looked it up on Google Earth or they send me links to articles about the South Atlantic Anomaly or things that they think make the existence of the Land plausible.
What do you wish someone had told you when you were a new author?
That’s a hard question to answer because the authors and agents and publishers I’ve met have been extremely generous with advice, so I felt prepared.

What books are you reading right now?
I don’t have a very presentable reading list at the moment. I just finished writing the story of the founders of the Land, which required a ton of research (Balfour’s Class Book of Botany or Naval Surgeon: Blockading the South, 1862-1866 anyone?), plus I also critique for other authors, so I get to read books before they are books.
What are you writing next? Is there another series in the works?
Good question! The founders’ story (working title: Aboard Providence) will be released sometime in 2016, but I’m not sure what I’ll write next. I’m keeping a notebook handy and it’s already full of ideas. It’s only been a week since I finished writing my last book. This is the longest I’ve gone between stories and I already miss writing, so I’m sure I’ll start a new story soon. I don’t think we’ve heard the last from the Land just yet!

    Author interview: Keely Brooke Keith
    Posted on April 6, 2017 by S B Williams
I have the pleasure of interviewing Christian fiction author Keely Brooke Keith. Her new release Above Rubies is now available!
Here’s the blurb for Above Rubies:

It’s 1863, and schoolteacher Olivia Owens believes education should be a top priority in the newly established settlement of Good Springs. Between planning lessons and helping out on her family’s homestead, Olivia doesn’t have time for Gabriel McIntosh’s charming advances. When the council denies her request to build a schoolhouse, Olivia must challenge their ruling and teach private lessons—all while hiding frequent bouts of word blindness (dyslexia). If the council knew the new teacher couldn’t always read, they wouldn’t allow Olivia to teach anymore.
As a carpenter, Gabe McIntosh is working hard to help build the settlement of Good Springs, and once his land is granted, he begins constructing his own house. When Olivia discovers he plans to share it with her, she guards her heart from him. But Gabe is determined to win her affection and figure out what she’s hiding
Now that we’ve read the blurb, can you tell us if this book is part of a series?
Yes, Above Rubies is the second book in the Uncharted Beginnings series, which is the prequel to the Uncharted series.
What inspired this particular book in general?
As I wrote Above Rubies, the story gripped my heart. Olivia’s unique struggle forced me to write things I never dreamed I’d write. And Gabe… well, you’ll have to meet Gabe for yourself. Actually, if you read Aboard Providence, you’ve met these two, but it was a superficial meeting. Their depth and strength has left an indelible mark on my soul. I hope you will be captured by their story too.
Can you give a brief description of your next planned work in progress?
I’m currently working on what will be Book 5 in the Uncharted series. Since it the story still morphing as I explore all the angles, I can’t give a description just yet
Are you traditionally or independently published? Why did you choose to publish this way?
I’ve been traditionally published, but with the current state of the Christian publishing industry and the benefits of independent publishing, when I have the opportunity to get publishing rights back, I take it.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself.
I collect foreign coins, especially pre-1900. It’s fun to me
Thanks to Keely for stopping by, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to chat!

Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Keely was a tree-climbing, baseball-loving ‘80s kid. She grew up in a family who frequently relocated. By graduation, Keely lived in 8 states and attended 14 schools. Keely is a bass guitarist and plays on worship teams and for solo artists. She is married to singer/songwriter John Martin Keith, and they frequently perform and tour together. When she isn’t writing stories or playing bass, Keely enjoys dancing, having coffee with friends, and sifting through vintage books at antique stores.

    ————————————————————————————————————————-

Savanna: Welcome to The Engrafted Word, Keely. Congratulations on your upcoming release, Uncharted Redemption. I sure enjoyed it! 🙂 What do you hope readers will take away most from your stories?
Keely: I try to tell stories that are comforting, thought provoking, and encouraging. I hope readers get to the end of my books feeling like they’ve gone on an adventure and they’re better off for it.
Savanna: Can you tell us what first sparked the ideas for Levi and Mandy’s story?
Keely: I always wanted to write the stories of several siblings and as I was writing Lydia’s story in The Land Uncharted, it became obvious that Levi carried so much baggage it affected his every movement. Though they’d been through the same tragedies, Levi saw things differently from Lydia and it made him bitter. Also a big chunk of his baggage was his unfulfilled longing to be with Mandy and even though she seemed superficial at first, there was much going on beneath her pretty surface. I wanted to mine the depths of them both for Uncharted Redemption.
Savanna: After reading your first book, I know I couldn’t wait to dive in to the second one. 😉
I love the playlists you included on your website. How fun! If you had to pick just one song to describe each of the books in the Uncharted Series, what would they be?
Keely: Love is Waiting by Brooke Fraser for The Land Uncharted
How Emptiness Sings by Christa Wells for Uncharted Redemption
Fire and Dynamite by Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors for Uncharted Inheritance
Savanna: Fun! Now I’m going to have to go look those up. 😉
Can you name an author who challenges and inspires you?
Keely: Wow—just one? The answer to this question changes with whatever I’m currently reading. At present Eleanor Catton’s writing captivates me. Her command of language inspires me.
Savanna: What is one of your most unforgettable moments from your writing career to date?
Keely: When I received my first publishing offer, my husband was so happy he got a little teary eyed. Man tears—especially happy man tears—are always unforgettable.
Savanna: Aww, love that! 🙂 Is there anything else you’d like to add? Any upcoming projects you can share with us?
Keely: I just approved the final edits of the third book in the Uncharted series, Uncharted Inheritance. I’m super excited about this story; it delivers some long-awaited answers in this series.
And I’m currently writing the founders’ story—those who’ve read The Land Uncharted know what I’m talking about. No title yet. It’s all new characters, but a familiar history. I’m taking my time with it and loving every minute of writing it.
Savanna: Wow! That sounds great, Keely. Thanks for being my guest this week. Have a blessed 2015!
    GIVEAWAY!!

Interview with Keely Brooke Keith, Author of the Uncharted Series

HG: Tell us about your Uncharted series…they are adult fiction, but also coming-of-age stories. They are sci-fi and yet feel like historicals. They have romance, to boot. I love genre-benders of all kinds, so please fill us in on this world you write about!
KBK: A group of antebellum families sailed away from America in December of 1860. Their ship was blown off course and ran aground on an uncharted land in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. They called the uninhabited place, simply, the Land. They founded a society there and seven generations later it’s flourishing, but antiquated compared to the outside world. This is where our story begins. The people of the Land have no contact with the warring 2025 world and no idea their land is undetectable until Unified States Naval Aviator Connor Bradshaw is ejected from his aircraft and his parachute carries him to the shore of the Land.
HG: Sounds intriguing! Could you share some of your journey to publication? I know many authors are becoming increasingly diverse in the way they’re getting their out-of-the-box stories out there.
KBK: When I decided to try to get The Land Uncharted published, I received a lot of great feedback from literary agents. I was repeatedly advised that The Land Uncharted was an independent press project due to the difficulty in marketing a unique genre blend. So I submitted directly to a few small presses and immediately had offers. This book’s small press history is a novel unto itself, but suffice it to say The Land Uncharted was released by Edenbrooke Press in October 2014. Uncharted Redemption was released in February and the third book, Uncharted Inheritance, will be released May 5, 2015. Audio versions of all three books are currently in production.
HG: I’ve heard that “difficult-to-market” response before myself so I totally relate. As this is a series, did you have all the books written before going to publication? Or are you writing as you go along?
KBK: I had the first two books complete before I started submitting The Land Uncharted and I was working on the third. My goal was to have the whole series written before I had a contract, because I was afraid any kind of deadline would stunt my creativity. It was both fortunate and freaky that I had my first offer just weeks after I started querying. Before long, I found myself getting ready for my first book launch and editing a book and writing another book all at the same time. It was overwhelming, but I had so much support from my husband and family and friends.
HG: You’re working on audiobooks for all three books. I know what a thrill it is to hear your book read aloud for the first time. How is this experience going for you? And you have different narrators for each?
KBK: When I had to approve the first portion of the first audiobook I was so nervous and didn’t want to hear it. I’m not sure why. I’d heard the narrator’s audition and loved it. Still, I had that same feeling you get as a kid right before you have to get a shot. Finally, I listened to it and once I heard it, I was in love with the process. Now when one of the narrators has completed another chapter for me to listen to, I feel like it’s Christmas morning!
And yes, I have different narrators for each book. I know some authors want one narrator for an entire series, which works when each book is based on one main character. But even though these three books have one series arc, each book focuses on a different member of the Colburn family. So with three different and complete stories, I wanted a different voice for each book. All three narrators are terrific. They love the stories. That comes across in a narrator’s voice.
HG: That is such a blessing to find unique narrators for each book! Could you share some of your best marketing strategies with us, as well as something that didn’t pan out the way you’d hoped? I know I could make a list of things I’ve tried that didn’t work! LOL.
KBK: Let’s see… don’t get a tattoo of your book cover. I’m totally kidding. I’ve done so much marketing in the past few months and it’s ongoing. I wish I had a “best strategy” but I’m new at all this. I’m still throwing things at the wall, hoping something sticks. I’m told the best marketing is simply writing more books and I’m doing that–not because of marketing though, but because I love writing. I am considering hiring a skywriter for the launch of Uncharted Inheritance. I was thinking he could draw a QR code in the sky over Manhattan and it would link to the series’ page on my website. There couldn’t be a breeze at all though or the skywriting would just be an expensive cloud. Again, kidding. See, you don’t want me in a marketing meeting.
HG: Call me gullible because I was falling for that tattoo and skywriting thing… Finally, you have two books out in the Uncharted series now…when is the final release? And what are you working on after that, if you can share?
KBK: Yes, The Land Uncharted and Uncharted Redemption are out now and Uncharted Inheritance comes out May 5, 2015. That’s the final book with this particular series arc, meaning all the questions up to that point are answered. I do have tons of ideas for future stories. I’ve created a whole world and plenty could happen there.
I’m currently writing the story of the founders–the group that ran aground on the Land in 1861. It’s a lot of fun to write and also a ton of research. I had to learn more about sailing and schooners than I ever wanted to know!
HG: Sounds very well-researched! Thanks for visiting today, Keely, and all the best with your series and all your books. Readers, please read on for a chance to win the first two in this series!

I have met a great many wonderful people. I always have interesting stories to tell! Last summer, I had the pleasure of meeting the author of the Uncharted Series and was able to teach her daughter riding lessons. Mind you, when I first began giving Ms. Keith’s daughter lessons, I had no idea that the friendly (and oh-so-understanding when I had to cancel lessons due to rain-outs) Keely Keith was actually an author! So imagine my delight when I learn that one of my students’ mothers is an author!
As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, I began to read the first book of Ms. Keith’s immediately, because I do so love my books. And if you’ll look to your left, you’ll notice that I have made the first book’s cover nice and large because I happen to love the simplicity of the photo.
So, before I delve into the interview, let me start off by giving a brief review of Ms. Keith’s book, since I have yet to review it.

Lydia Colburn is a young physician dedicated to serving her village in the Land. When injured fighter pilot Connor Bradshaw’s parachute carries him from the war engulfing the 2025 world to her hidden land, his presence threatens her plans, her family, and the survival of her preindustrial society. As Connor searches for a way to return to his squadron, his fascination with life in the Land makes him protective of Lydia and her peaceful homeland, and Lydia’s attraction to Connor stirs desires she never anticipated. Written like a historical, set like a scifi, and filled with romance, The Land Uncharted weaves adventure and love in this suspenseful story of a hidden land.
Personally, I don’t think the synopsis does the book justice. When I first read the synopsis, I was a little wary simply because this genre of book (as described in the synopsis) strays quite a bit from what I’ve read before, but do you want to know what I loved most about this book? The Land Uncharted is like every 1800s-1900s book I have ever read. It is classic, romantic, and completely innocent. The Land Uncharted has something ― don’t ask me what! ― in it that I’d thought we, as writers, had lost long ago.
Ms. Keith’s book was a breath of fresh air. Despite being set in the future, Ms. Keith’s book has all the pure elements of books like Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and all the other amazing classics. And there was just enough “action” in the book and concern for the main character to keep the reader glued.
    [Slow clap]
Well done, Ms. Keith. Well done.
Something else that I liked about The Land Uncharted was that Lydia was not your typical, teenaged, annoyingly perfect, do-it-herself woman. Lydia understands her limits and she submits to her father!
What a strange concept, right guys?!
    **cough cough** sarcasm **cough cough**
Lydia is well established within her community but she respects people and people respect her. I love the sense of propriety within the book. You really just feel happy reading it, the entire time! When you read the celebration/party scene, you’ll understand what I’m talking about.
(By the way, guys, that was an amazing part of the book But then again, I happened to enjoy a few other parts as well so …)
And then Connor’s character. Amazing. I absolutely loved Connor. Lydia is a dim bulb burning in an already-lit room when compared to the bright and shining light in the darkness that is Connor Bradshaw. Not really, I loved Lydia, but seriously. Connor. He’s perfect, right? Those who have read the book must agree.
Connor wants to protect everything that is wholesome. He has a hero personality. I’ve read and been told that most men want to be able to save a damsel in distress, slay a dragon, and go on a daring adventure.
This is definitely true for Connor.
And I know I’ve probably said this quite a few times but Connor totally captured my heart.

**Note** I have a serious problem. Because when somebody asks me if I have a boyfriend, I say,
“Yeah. It’s [insert latest book crush].”
And people respond, “Oh really? Can I meet him?”
I reply with, “Well, that’d be kind of impossible. He’s in a book. See my dilemma?”

    So there’s my brief review.
    It could have been longer.

Anyway, let’s move on to the real reason you clicked on this post. You want to hear from the author, right? Great. Let’s hear from her! (Interview will be in blue because … look at that cover! The theme seems to be blue.)
What inspired you to write The Land Uncharted? And when did you first come up with the idea?
“I’ve always loved maps. When I was a kid my grandma saved National Geographic maps for me. I would paper my bedroom walls with them. I often stared at the wide blue swaths of ocean on the maps and wondered if there was any land there that we just didn’t know about. Then as an adult, I researched my family history. Most of my ancestors moved west in the middle of the 19th Century. They traveled in groups like so many Americans at the time and it made me wonder: what if instead of going west a group of families wanted to find a whole new land and got on a ship. I wondered what that settlement would be like several generations later and decided to drop a modern man into the middle of it to find out.”
How long did it take for you to publish the book? Did you go about publishing it independently or

    Book 2

through a publishing company? How was your experience writing and publishing this book? What was the most difficult problem you had to overcome?
“When I decided to try to get The Land Uncharted published, I received immediate response from literary agents and a lot of great feedback. I was repeatedly advised that The Land Uncharted was an independent press project due to the difficulty in marketing such a unique genre blend (histori-fi-mance anyone?), so I submitted to a few small presses and quickly had offers. The Land Uncharted was first signed with a small press. That contract fell through, which is common in publishing, but it’s painful nonetheless. I soon had offers from other publishers, but by then I’d read several books on publishing and realized I could it. It seemed counterintuitive to turn down publishing offers, but I prayed about it and got not only peace about starting an independent press, but also excitement. I started Edenbrooke Press and I haven’t looked back.
The Land Uncharted was released by Edenbrooke Press in October 2014. Uncharted Redemption came out in February of this year and the third book, Uncharted Inheritance, is scheduled for release in May. All three books have been released as audiobooks in the past month and The Land Uncharted is currently under consideration for film rights.”
The cover is gorgeous! Can you say where you got the photo from? A stock photo company? Did you take it and have it edited? Did a friend take it?
“I’m fortunate to have one of the best cover designers in the business. Najla Qamber designed the covers for The Land Uncharted, Uncharted Redemption, and Uncharted Inheritance. She’s amazing!”
What advice would you give to young authors?
“I often hear people tell aspiring authors to read more than you write. I disagree. I’ve seen far too many manuscripts from new writers who read so much that all they do when they write is regurgitate what they’ve read. Yes, read a lot, but also spend plenty of time alone in the quiet with your thoughts. Captivity breeds creativity. If anything you write reminds you of anything you have read in a book or seen on television or in a movie, delete it and go in a different direction.”
Where did you get the idea to have several key surnames?
“All of the last names in the Uncharted books are from my genealogy. The first names are either from my family history (of ancestors born before 1860) or they are Bible names, but no character is named after any particular ancestor of mine.”

    Book 3

In your dedication, it says, “To Marty: Challenge accepted.” Is there an interesting story behind that?
“Marty, my husband and greatest encourager, has joyfully listened to my stories and ideas for stories for years. In January of 2013, we were driving through the pristine back country of Williamson County looking for an estate sale when he up and said, “Here is a challenge for you: I challenge you to write your book.” That was all it took for me to start writing it.”
If this book were to be made into a movie, who would you want to star in it as Lydia and Connor?
“This is crazy hard for me to answer. When The Combined Book Exhibit made the trailer for The Land Uncharted they asked me to name actors that looked like the characters and I couldn’t. I love what they came up with. Here is a link to the book trailer.”
Have you hosted any writing workshops? If not, have you considered hosting one?
“I haven’t taught a workshop yet and that’s probably because I have aspiring writers asking me for advice almost daily. My life is a rolling writing workshop!”

For the sake of being cliché, I happily say, There you have it, folks.
Do you guys see Book 3’s cover? Can you say beautiful?
Please go watch the trailer for Ms. Keith’s book; it’s simple but well-crafted and accurately portrays the book. But why, Ms. Keith?! Why could we not see their faces! Maybe you’re doing us a favor. Sometimes it’s good to be able to put faces to the characters, sometimes it takes away the imaginative element. Maybe I should be saying “thank you,” …. maybe.

I figure that since I’ve given you the covers of Ms. Keith’s other books to gawk at, I should also reveal their synopses. It’s just the right thing to do.
    Uncharted Redemption
Levi Colburn, resentful of his father, haunted by his mother’s tragic death, and pained by his love for the unattainable Mandy Foster, breaks from the Land’s tradition and begins to build a life of his own. When rebels tear through the village of Good Springs, Levi vows to deliver justice and restore the woman he loves. As tradition stands in the way of redemption and threats from the outside world begin to appear, Levi must learn his greatest battles cannot be fought with his fists. Romantic, suspenseful, and filled with adventure, Uncharted Redemption weaves dramatic new layers into life in the Land.
    Uncharted Inheritance
Bethany Colburn finally turns eighteen and Everett Foster is about to confess his love for her. When a new man arrives in the village of Good Springs, he brings charm Bethany has never encountered and illness the Land has never known. While the medicinal power of the gray leaf tree is put to the test and the Colburn family’s strength is stretched thin, Bethany must learn to protect her true inheritance. Uncharted Inheritance weaves heartbreak and hope while delivering long-awaited answers in this suspenseful story of life in a hidden land.

Brooke Keith (The Land Uncharted) returns to the frontier settlement featured in her previous Uncharted series in this inviting prequel about an expedition from Virginia to Brazil in 1860. Eight Christian families make a plan to pioneer a new, peaceful settlement in Brazil, far from the civil unrest brewing in America after Abraham Lincoln's election. Jonah Ashton, a medical student studying in Pennsylvania, has been called home to Virginia to join the expedition. But a desire to graduate and clear his name after false allegations are lodged against him creates a conundrum for him. Unwilling to disappoint his father, he devises a plan he believes will allow him to appease his family by going on the trip while also finishing school. Marian Foster, a self-taught botanist who is also part of the expedition, sees the trip as a new adventure full of promise. Despite an immediate attraction, their relationship is hindered by Jonah's desire to eventually return to Pennsylvania. Brooke Keith's abundantly detailed and romantic adventure tale features a faithful, colorful cast that face the unknown with grit and determination, making for a fresh and satisfying story. The simple life of physician Lydia Colburn expands with the introduction of an enigmatic stranger in Keith's (Aboard Providence) chaste Christian romance that insufficiently blends science fiction with Amish-style culture. In 2025, a world war rages over natural resources. Navy pilot Lt. Connor Bradshaw ejects and parachutes into the Land, an isolated, preindustrial island in the South Atlantic Ocean. The settlers are descendants of. pioneers who left America in 1861 and maintained a society of horse and buggy and prairie dresses. Unfortunately, it's also a society in which Lydia fears that her reputation will be destroyed because of deranged stalker Frank Roberts. Meanwhile, Connor embraces his peaceful new life and virtuous courtship of Lydia. He also encourages local inventors to stop experimenting with electricity, so the outside world won't discover the Land and its abundant fresh water. Science fiction elements intrude on the idyllic life of the villagers adding little to the story of a peaceful people and their homespun troubles. An inadequate background for Connor leaves his character and his quick adoption of the Land incomplete. (BookLife)

    Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5 out of 5 stars)
    My Thoughts:
Lieutenant Connor Bradshaw is a naval aviator fighting a worldwide war in the year 2025. On a mission to secure much-needed water, a malfunction causes Connor’s plane to crash into a mysterious, hidden place called the Land. Lydia Colburn has lived a relatively peaceful life in the Land as a physician, with the exception of her mother’s death and a man who won’t stop following her around. When she spots a man falling from the sky, she rushes to his side despite her fear and confusion. This event leaves Lydia wondering what the consequences of Connor’s arrival will be for her Land, which has remained undisturbed for seven generations—and Connor wondering how he will possibly make it back to his world. Soon Lydia and Connor realize they are attracted to each other and Connor would do anything to protect her…both from the war outside and an escalating stalker right in her village.
I was immediately intrigued when I first read the synopsis for this novel. Suspense, romance, mystery, intrigue, world war, mysterious lands…everything about this book sounded compelling and that is exactly what it was! Though confused at first by the strange Land, I soon realized that the strangeness and mystery were essential to the story. Unwrapping clues little by little in order to uncover the big picture made this book all the more intriguing as well as engaging. The characters were authentic and true souls, making me want to know as much about them as I could. I especially loved Lydia’s protective, kind family. I’m not one to spoil endings, but I will say that this one left me curiously surprised…and wanting more!
If you enjoy intriguing suspenseful romances, The Land Uncharted is for you! I highly recommend to anyone looking for something both fresh and interesting. Keely Brooke Keith is an author to watch out for and I am eagerly anticipating book two in the series, Uncharted Redemption, coming February 2015.

All Things Beautiful by Keely Brooke Keith – Book Review and Deal Alert

If you happened to drop by the blog yesterday, I shared the first line from All Things Beautiful. Today I’m going a bit more in depth with my review of the book. Don’t miss the sale of the boxed set of the first three eBooks of that series is on sale through May 2 for $0.99!
    In My Opinion…
Have you ever ignored or given up a dream because you feared you weren’t good enough? That’s exactly the theme of Keely Brooke Keith’s All Things Beautiful.
First of all, let me say that this was my first visit to the Land Uncharted. I’ve heard great things about Keith’s series but until now have not read any of them. That said, at no point in this book was I lost. This book stands well on it’s own.

Hannah Vestal’s deepest longing—one she shared with her mother and a friend who helps her out—is to write. Her main focus is on caring for her younger siblings but she takes any private moment (mostly in the wee hours of the night) putting words on paper.
After a conversation with her father and the encouragement of her friend, Hannah decides to print her book and strikes up a bargain with Henry Roberts. The only caveat? He insists on reading it before determining if it’s worthy to be printed. After all, he’s got an even bigger project to complete.
Henry and Hannah are so cute together! They’re both a little shy, both doubt themselves in their own way, but their attraction draws them together despite their hesitations. And *sigh* that scene of them together outside at the Good Springs dance!
This is a sweet story with a message of overcoming self-doubt to find your true potential. Sure, there are some hiccups along the way, some disappointments, but in the end, those things just make the outcome more rewarding.
Now I’m off to read more about the residence of Good Springs…

Hannah tries to arrange the printing with the settlement’s pressman, but the witty and dapper Henry Roberts won’t make it easy for her to prove her writing is worthy of his ink.
If Henry Roberts did nothing else for the rest of his life but print and bind books, he would die a satisfied man. In order to secure settlement support for his printing press, the elder council says Henry must print an error-free copy of the New Testament before the settlement’s 8th anniversary celebration. Book Review: Above Rubies by Keely Brooke Keith

Back in the Land in the 1860’s

Above Rubies is the second book in Keely Brooke Keith’s Uncharted Beginnings series. It is set in the 1860’s, two years after the settlers arrive in The Land.

The story focuses on Olivia Owens, who has a calling to be a schoolteacher. Unfortunately, the people of Good Springs don’t see the need for formal teaching—they need their children to be contributing to building the settlement. And they certainly don’t see the need for a dedicated schoolhouse. It seems the only person supporting Olivia is carpenter and flirt Gabe McIntosh.

And Olivia has a secret (all good characters have a secret). If people knew her secret, they’d never let her teach their children. Because Olivia has what we now call dyslexia: some days she can read words, and some days the monster comes and mixes up all the letters. And who’d want a teacher who can’t read?

Above Rubies was an enjoyable read. I liked the interplay between Olivia and Gabe, both in terms of their developing personal relationship, and the way he supports her to achieve her dreams.

The one fault was that the ending was somewhat abrupt. I’d been thinking there were a couple more chapters when the book just finished—the remaining pages were teaser chapters from The Land Uncharted.

Above Rubies is a standalone novel, although it’s probably best to read Aboard Providence first, so you understand the background and family relationships. However, it’s not necessary—all you need to know is the community have settled an uncharted island, and have no way of leaving.

A must-read for all Keely Brooke Keith fans, and anyone who enjoys historical Christian romance.

Thanks to the author for providing a free ebook for review. You can find out more about Keely Brooke Keith at her website, and you can read the introduction to Above Rubies below:

BOOK REVIEW – UNCHARTED INHERITANCE by KEELY BROOKE KEITH
    May 19, 2015 by Robin E. Mason

BOOK REVIEW – UNCHARTED INHERITANCE by KEELY BROOKE KEITH

The Land has its traditions. The way things have been for seven generations, for the good and safety of its people. None have questioned before, none have resisted. None have defied.

Bethany Colburn, the youngest of her clan, turns eighteen but is not ready for courtship – per tradition; she is not ready to settle down. After all, she has two examples to follow: her sister Lydia became the first female doctor and had no intention of marrying either, and brother Levi built his own home and chose his own career rather than take up their father’s stead.

Evil threatens the town of Good Springs in a different way this time: by corrupting established values. The arrival of a stranger in their midst only serves to whet Bethany’s appetite for adventure, for different. For daring. The fact that he brings an unknown disease to The Land and the two of them are quarantined together established a bond between them.

But Bethany doesn’t fully grasp the safety of their traditions, nor does she realize the foreign values of the newcomer. A man thrust from a troubling and turbulent 21st century world to a land steeped in morals and godly values. A man who delights in the company of a young – and naïve – young woman.

Will Bethany grasp the danger of this man who disregards the traditions and values of The Land? Or does she fall prey to his dishonorable and base intentions? Can she escape the web of conflict and confusion to embrace her inheritance – and the man who loves her.

I was given a copy of this book in return for my honest review.

Keely Brooke Keith does not disappoint with the third in this series. A compelling read, with every bit as much intrigue and mystery as the first two books in the series. Will The Land be discovered after all these years? Or does it remain safe from outside influence? Does Bethany give in to her longing for adventure? Or does she respond in kind to Everett Foster’s declaration of love?

"Aboard Providence" by Keely Brooke Keith

Just prior to the Civil War, a small group of Christians departs the United States for a new settlement in South America.

In November 1860, Jonah Ashton boarded the Providence with a plan to escort his family to their new settlement in South America and then return to medical school in Pennsylvania before rumors of Southern rebellion erupt into all-out war. What he didn’t count on was getting lost at sea and falling in love. When they finally reach land, Jonah makes a startling discovery that changes everything, but will it change his heart?

As the book's title would indicate, the vast majority of Aboard Providence does, in fact, take place aboard the Providence. The travelers encounter several difficulties on their trip, including becoming horribly lost at sea. When they finally arrive on land, they are not where they had planned to be ... in fact, I'm entirely unsure of where they ended up. I'm sure if I had read The Uncharted Series, I would have better understanding. (Aboard Providence is a prequel to the Uncharted Series, which is set in the present and is about the settlement the group in Aboard Providence founded.) While the vague nature of their location feels purposeful, I would have appreciated knowing where the settlers ended up.

The final third or so of the novel is set on land—dubbed the Land by the settlers. This portion I found to be far more interesting than the rest of the novel, as the settlers faced adventure and danger. Also in this section, Marian, the girl Jonah falls in love with, makes some fascinating discoveries regarding a tree in the Land. I'd imagine this tree is an integral part of the Uncharted Series—it certainly seems important, though it's not fully explored in Aboard Providence.

While I found myself intrigued by this novel, one aspect fell flat to me, and that was the romance between Marian and Jonah. I'm not sure if it's that the characters weren't fully fleshed out or that they fell in love too quickly without enough explanation, but I had a hard time buying their relationship. I can't go into detail without giving things away, but it felt like their "happily ever after" was mainly due to circumstances beyond their control, rather than a selfless love for one another.

I had no idea Aboard Providence was a prequel; I have a feeling if I had previously read the Uncharted Series, I would have liked this book a lot more. As it was, I found it diverting but not enthralling. 3 stars.

    About the Book
Lydia Colburn is a young physician dedicated to serving her village in the Land, a landmass in the South Atlantic Ocean undetectable to the outside world.

    My Review
This story started a bit slow for me, but quickly picked up pace, and then wound up being a delightful whirlwind of a read. I especially enjoyed following the love story of the hero and heroine—Connor and Lydia—while being intrigued by the suspense created around the creepy character, Frank. Although I already knew the end romantically speaking, it was entertaining to see the romance, and, the rest of the story play out. Each character—main and secondary—was distinctively well crafted to suit the story. And although some parts of the plot were predictable, there were those parts that weren’t, which altogether added to the excitement of the story.
Keith displayed an adept skill with her secondary characters by dropping trickles of hints throughout the story, which she eventually wove into a premise for her next book. Despite a satisfying end, this story, obviously, isn’t finished yet.
There’s a simplicity to Keith’s writing that eases the reader into an enjoyable read, and at the same time her writing maintains a strong voice. It is impressively illustrative, and the entire story is generally well paced. I can rightly say Keith has a stellar imagination, as she created a world out of nothing that exists—similar, though, in culture to the pioneer times—but very much believable. Also, Keith has a way with words that provokes humor so that you raise your brow and while you chuckle.
Altogether, this was a delightful read. I’m looking forward to other books by Keith.

    Review

The story of Sophia Ashton and Bailey Colburn—as well as a mention of our favorite old characters in the Uncharted Series—showcases a message of hope and positivity in a world where, though, each woman felt alone, they pressed on in their desire to better their life and the lives of those around them, leading each woman to a place of hope and satisfaction.
Sophia and Bailey are two worlds apart, but their journeys are not so different. They each work to overcome the odds slated against them with a resilience that doesn’t surrender. In the end, they are blessed with brighter hope in the way they are able to rise above their circumstances, and are further inspired to trust God because of it.
The softness and subtleness with which the theme is laid and planted in the heart of the reader as they traipse along with the characters, is itself an endearing element. This is how to write a story—passing your message across without brutally beating it into anyone. Keith has mastered the sophisticated art of handling plots, characters, and all the elements between sci-fi and frontier-style fiction—and garnished with romance!—with a finesse that allows her to delicately but sturdily fuse them all neatly to reveal a stunning display of literary bliss!
Another well done story by Keely Brooke Keith!
