SIDELIGHTS
Vi Keeland is a tax attorney by day and has written numerous New York Times and USA Today best-selling erotic romance novels by night, including the “Cole,” “MMA Fighter,” and “Rush” series. She has sold millions of books that have appeared in over a hundred best-seller lists and have been translated into twenty languages. She lives in New York with her family.
Keeland teamed up with frequent collaborator Penelope Ward, a former television news anchor, to publish the stand-alone novel, Cocky Bastard, in 2015. Aubrey is driving across country when her car breaks down in the middle of Nebraska. Here she meets the Harley-riding Australian hunk, Chance. Deciding to travel together, they spend their sexually-tense nights in hotels and enjoy their trysts until things get too intense and Chance wants to move on. As for the book’s racy title, the authors admit it was a gamble but believed it would attract more readers than it deterred. Keeland told Jennifer McCartney in an interview in Publishers Weekly that because they are independent publishers without the marketing budget of a large company, “it’s even more important for us to convey the feel of our book with our title, cover, and synopsis alone.”
Keeland’s 2017 Egomaniac finds love in an office building. When divorce lawyer Drew Jagger returns from a vacation, he notices a light on in the office he was having renovated in his absence. He tackles the intruder, fiery redhead marriage counselor Emerie Rose, recently arrived from Oklahoma, who claims that he is the intruder and this is her office. Come to find out, a scam artist “leased” Jagger’s office to her for ten thousand dollars, her life savings. Jagger allows her to stay and share the office until she can move into another one. With their contradictory occupations, they engage in shouting matches and have little in common except sexual attraction. “Fans of humorous contemporaries will find this a delightful diversion,” according to a writer in Publishers Weekly. A reviewer online at Harlequin Junkie commented: “It’s a sublimely satisfying romance that hits all the right spots. From the first page, Vi Keeland hooks the reader with heartfelt comedy, emotional storytelling and simmering sexual chemistry.”
Keeland and Ward also teamed up to write the “Rush” series. In Rebel Heir, Gia is spending the summer in the swanky Hamptons and has planned a perfect vacation, but she did not expect to fall for Rush, the leather jacket wearing, scruffy-faced bad boy with tattoos that she learns owns the company she works for as well as half the town. Rebel Heart continues the romantic adventures of Gia and her new boss, Rush, who have doubts that the relationship will work.

A few things most people don't know about me!
A boy with platinum blond hair and light green eyes pushed me off my bicycle when I was eight, I have a small scar on my left knee to prove it. I married him anyway.
I'm short, my license states 5'1"...but that's stretching the truth. I wear heels and have big boobs and a matching big mouth, so most people don't notice.
I wasn't a good student in high school. My worst subject...Science. Absolutely hated it. I married a Science teacher.
My favorite thing in the world to do is sit on a quiet beach with a glass of wine, the sun hitting my face, toes buried in the sand, and read.
I've had the same best friend for thirty years. She comes over on release day at 11 a.m. and we drink Bloody Marys.
I love to travel. Favorite vacation spot ever...Santorini, Greece.
Four years, fifteen books, more than 60 bestseller lists.

Mutual indie icons Vi Keeland and Carly Phillips both have new contemporary romances out this week (Vi’s Bossman came out yesterday, and Carly’s Going Down Easy arrived today). They join us to chat each other up about the joys of indie publishing, raising teenage girls and yummy heroes.
Going Down Easy by Carly Phillips
Vi: I’m so excited to have this opportunity to pick Carly Phillips’ brain today! Not only is she a successful indie author, but Carly is also an icon in the traditionally published romance world, having published 50 novels in over 18 years!
Carly: I’m blushing. Thanks for calling me an icon. Coming from someone I consider an Indie Icon, I’m humbled. xo
Vi: Carly, after such a long career in traditional publishing, what do you miss most when you self-publish? What do you miss least?
Carly: Vi, Can I say I ❤ you for doing this with me! To be brutally honest, the only thing I miss about traditional publishing is having my books in a bookstore (but I’ve managed to solve that problem and all my Dare and NY Dare books will be print published by Spencer Hill Press starting January 2017 without me losing my indie/e-book rights.
What I miss least is what I love about indie publishing. I love control (who knew?). I can set my prices. I can pick my covers. I can choose my release dates. I can change the prices, covers, release dates, run sales, do whatever I need to do at any given time to shake things up and help my career. I love being indie and I love the readers and bloggers who make it so much fun and easy.
Vi: A lot of people don’t know we have a few things in common — we’re both New Yorkers, each have two daughters (although I have a son, too!), both attorneys and our dogs think they’re human.
Carly: I have to say this is so cool. I don’t know about you, but I don’t miss being a lawyer at all. Of course I didn’t do it for too long, but that’s another story. And I want to know more about your dogs. I have three. Two wheaten terriers and a mutant-sized Havanese.
Vi: Our dogs are cousins! I have an Airedale terrier — he’s over 100 pounds. You know the panagram The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog? Well, he’s the lazy brown dog.
What do you think was more difficult — writing your last book, passing the bar exam or raising teenage girls?
Carly: BAHAHAHAHA. Raising teenage girls is by far the most difficult thing I’ve done. They’re in their 20s and it is still difficult. Don’t let their beautiful faces fool you. (I know, I know, I’m biased.) They are a handful. And a half. Is your boy easier?
Vi: So much easier! I always joke that having 20 boys would be easier than having one 16-year-old girl — but I’m really not joking. LOL
You have more than 50 books out! That’s absolutely incredible in this industry.
Carly: Thank you! I’ve also been around a long *cough* long time.
Vi: Does one hold a special place in your heart more than the rest?
Carly: I can’t answer that. Well, yes, I can. Right now I’m finishing up Going Down Easy, and I am so in love with my hero, Kaden Barnes, that I can’t even describe it. He’s unique in that he’s a combination of alpha and sensitive, he’s got some OCD and ADD/ADHD issues that define him but he’s overcome it. Mostly. With some lingering emotional scars. I love it because Kade is such a yummy hero and because it touches on so many issues I, along with others, can relate to.
Bossman by Vi KeelandVi: Writers often say that their books own a piece of their heart. How much of your last book is Carly on paper?
Carly: I have to say, without going into too much detail, there is a lot of life experience in this book. Not all mine, but I am very close to a lot of the details and issues in this story. And I’m very proud of it, too. I can’t wait for readers to get their hands on it.
Vi: I cannot wait to read Going Down Easy. Billionaire stories are my weakness. What is your favorite trope to write?
Carly: I change my mind all the time. Sometimes I think, Oh, it’s so much easier to write a couple with a past, they know each other. Then I sit down to write them and I think, Ugh, there’s nothing to write about because they already know each other, LOL. Every book is different. Every book brings its own challenge. Some write themselves, but those are a gift, and they don’t happen often. When they do I celebrate. But I never know which story, which trope, will be a gift book or a tough one until I’m in the middle of it.
Vi: You recently co-wrote the popular Dirty Sexy Series with Erika Wilde. Writing is such an individual thing, every writer has their own process, their own way that their characters “talk” to them.
How do you two make it work? Do you each write a different POV or section? Do you develop an outline? What is the Carly/Erika process?
Carly: Erika and I have been working together for more years than I’ve been published. We know each other’s processes. We can predict how the other will react. So when it came to writing a book, we already know what it’s like to go in and work on what the other person wrote. It just clicks with us. It’s strengthened the friendship (which I didn’t think was even possible we’re so close), and it has taught me a lot about working even harder. I love writing with Erika.
Vi: You are the queen of writing swoony heroes.
Carly: Blushing again. Seriously. You’ve called me an icon and a queen. I adore you!
Vi: What does it take in a hero to get you, as a reader, to swoon?
Carly: I Iove a hero who stands up for the heroine. I’m also brave enough to admit I like a hero who rescues the heroine, too. I want that “oomph” feeling in my stomach about the couple because the hero is just too delicious to be denied. He can have flaws of course, don’t they all, but in the end that’s what makes him special and unique and meant for just that one woman. 🙂
Vi: Thank you so much for letting me interview you! I can’t wait to read Going Down Easy. That title alone has me hot and bothered, and now that I know a little more, I’m even more excited. XO

Egomaniac
Vi Keeland. C Scott Publishing, $3.9.9 e-book (301 p) ASIN B01N40EZRB
This contemporary standalone is romantic, sexy, and just a little sentimental. When playboy divorce attorney Drew Jagger returns from vacation on New Year's Eve, he decides to make a quick check on renovations to his Park Avenue office before heading up to his penthouse apartment. Construction progress looks good, but someone left a light on in the file room. Opening the door, he's surprised to see a comely redhead leap onto a chair and threaten him with some serious krav maga moves. When her skirt falls down around her ankles she starts to look a lot less threatening. It turns out that some con man rented Jagger's office to the redhead, Emerie Rose, an Oklahoma transplant and marriage counselor. Taking pity on her, the confirmed playboy lets Emerie use some of his office space until she can either retrieve or replace her lost deposit. In the meantime, he fights a losing battle against committing to her. Fans of humorous contemporaries will find this a delightful diversion. (BookLife)

From Hurricane Sandy to hot sex: bestselling romance authors team up for a 'cocky' new novel

After Hurricane Sandy flooded her Long Island home with four feet of water, destroying almost everything she owned, Vi Keeland and her family were forced to relocate to a FEMA trailer. It was during this period, she says, that she began to re-evaluate what was important to her. A tax attorney by day, she realized she had always wanted to be a novelist. Three years later, Keeland is a New York Times--bestselling indie author of almost a dozen books, including the MMA Fighter series and the Cole series. Earlier this year, she embarked on a new project: a coauthored romance with friend and author Penelope Ward called Cocky Bastard. The novel, which features a Harley-riding Australian hunk named Chance, has been a hit with readers. The book made the New York Times bestseller list, the USA Today bestseller list, and the top 100 Kindle romance titles within a few weeks of their releasing it through Amazon on August 15.

Like Keeland, Ward says she began writing during a particularly stressful time in her life. It was 2013, and coping with her daughter's autism, her mother's illness, and the death of her grandmother meant that life was a challenge. After reading Fifty Shades of Grey, the Rhode Island-based author was inspired and wanted to give romance writing a try--if only as a means of escape from daily stress. Soon, she too was a New York Times bestselling author, with novels like Stepbrother Dearest and a number of other successful self-published titles. After meeting online, the two authors began a friendship and decided to embark on a writing project together.
Keeland and Ward admit that the racy title was a gamble, but decided it would attract more readers than it might deter. "As indie publishers, we don't have the luxury of a large marketing and promotion budget that can help explain our story to our readers," Keeland says, "So it's even more important for us to convey the feel of our book with our title, cover, and synopsis alone." In fact, this was the first step in the coauthoring process. They quickly realized the potential of the unique title and began exchanging a Word document in which they'd suggest plot points until they had a solid outline for a novel. "Once we were fairly certain which direction the story was going to go from start to finish, we alternated chapters," Keeland says.

Big Decisions--Together
"I wrote on the schedule of Friday through Sunday, and Vi took over on Monday through Thursday," Ward says. Neither knew what the other had written until the document arrived on the appointed day. Such cowriting is not for everyone, the authors say. In order to be successful, they each had to be willing to give up some creative control.
The biggest challenge, according to both authors, was establishing their business together. The endeavor required them to set up new vendor and bank accounts in addition to drafting legal agreements. It was important to them that they each had access to the accounts and that the financial split from the royalties and other revenue streams was equal. After initially offering Cocky Bastard For $3.99, they set the price for the digital book at $4.99, which is slightly higher than their individual titles. Keeland notes that the novel is still below the traditional publishing price point for similar books, but adds that the slightly higher price helps cover advertising costs. The duo has also sold foreign rights to Book Plaza, a publisher in South Korea.
The finished manuscript for Cocky Bastard attracted the attention of several traditional publishers. Both Keeland and Ward were intrigued by the idea of a publishing deal and shopped the novel around to see if there was interest. What they discovered was that the advances offered by major publishers couldn't match what they were expecting to earn through self-publishing. "After a combined 17 indie books, we feel we know the monetary value a solid self-published book can bring," Keeland says. The authors are already planning their next collaboration. They say their follow-up will be a standalone novel with all new characters, but with elements readers will find reminiscent of Cocky Bastard. A sexy Australian? A Nebraska rest stop? Readers will have to wait to find out.

REVIEW: Egomaniac by Vi Keeland
Posted January 19th, 2017 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, Contemporary Romance, HJ Top Pick!, Review / 4 comments
HJ_TopPick Egomaniac by Vi Keeland: I am still smiling like a loon after finishing Egomaniac hours ago– it’s a sublimely satisfying romance that hits all the right spots. From the first page, Vi Keeland hooks the reader with heartfelt comedy, emotional storytelling and simmering sexual chemistry. It’s only January, but Egomaniac is already marked for my Best of 2017 list.
Emerie Rose is an Oklahoma girl who recently moved to New York City and just got conned. She leased the perfect Park Avenue office space for her marriage therapy practice, but her landlord wasn’t the landlord and didn’t have any right to rent out the space. He took her $10,000 in cash and now Emerie is out her savings and staring into the sexy eyes of her office’s rightful owner – Drew Jagger.
Drew returned from a two-week vacation to discover he has a beautiful squatter. He’s a cynical divorce attorney but he’s not so mean to as kick a girl when she’s down, especially one as unassumingly sexy as Emerie, and he offers to temporarily share his office until she can find another one. Even though their jobs put them at cross purposes – she’s working to keep marriages together and he’s taking them apart – these office mates work great next to each other and find they enjoy each other’s company.
Enjoy is too tame a word – Drew and Emerie have unrestrained fun together and are fiercely attracted to each other. The sexual tension between them intensifies with each therapy session completed and divorce settlement negotiated, and both consider taking their relationship from the office to the bedroom.
If Egomaniac sounds like fun, sexy times – it is. But it’s SO much more. Between Emerie and Drew’s witty banter, Kindle-fogging sexual interludes and amusing antics, Vi Keeland weaves a touching story that gives this romance a complexity and depth that will resonate. If there were Oscars for romance novels, Drew would get my nomination for Best Hero in a Contemporary Romance. He’s a little bit alpha-male and a little bit dirty-talking bad boy with a lot of hidden unpretentious, compassionate man underneath it all. There is not anything simple about Egomaniac – except it is simply a wonderful book.
