SIDELIGHTS
Born January 1, 1967, Eric Kaufmann is an executive coach who guides leaders to think beyond the obvious so they can make better decisions. He is president of Sagatica, a leadership advisory firm for executives and innovators who want to succeed in personal or organizational transitions. The name Sagatica is derived from the Latin word for wisdom, sagacitas. Kaufmann blends strategic thinking with Zen practices to help leaders improve priorities, relationships, and leadership skills. Kaufmann draws on university degrees in business and psychology, decades of Zen practice, experiences living in Israel and South Africa, and private practice as a certified hypnotherapist. His corporate clients have included Sony, T-Mobile, Verizon, Genentech, and Alcon Labs. He also serves on the board of the San Diego Zen Center.
In 2016 Kaufmann published The Four Virtues of a Leader: Navigating the Hero’s Journey, in which he assures that business executives and innovators can learn to exhibit the same essential attributes found in the classical hero’s journey. The four key traits are the following: Focus from self-awareness and vision; Courage to move ahead and face what you would rather avoid; Grit to overcome fatigue and discouragement to achieve long-term goals; and Faith to cast aside doubt and stay committed. On the Sagatica Web site, the four virtues are further described. Focus means leaders should be intentional and purposeful about where they, their team, and the organization concentrate effort. Courage means initiating a journey by purposefully setting out to create something new and challenging. Grit means dedication and perseverance that are predictive of future achievement. Faith means the “hero” title is given to those who have made great contribution at some personal cost.
Kaufmann’s wisdom and insights are field tested from his experience working with Fortune 500 companies. Business leaders, coaches, and managers must be willing to leave the familiar, safe business structure to look beyond, embrace a path to personal evolution, and adhere to goals. He describes how leaders can be heroes in their own organization, transcend chaos and uncertainty, create a clear and calm direction for the company, engage in continuous learning, recognize that uncertainty yields the potential for innovation and growth, achieve their full potential, and find purpose. He explains how to look inward, become self-aware, find courage, and incorporate value into leaders’ daily lives. A contributor to Publishers Weekly noted that what Kaufmann’s advice lacks in novelty, “he makes up for in enthusiasm and encouragement, challenging readers to ‘embolden your path.’” The contributor added that Kaufmann’s interest in Zen contributes to an emphasis on mindfulness, and that Kaufmann is earnest and thoughtful.

What leadership consultant Kaufmann lacks in novelty, he makes up for in enthusiasm and encouragement, challenging readers to "embolden
your path--your leadership as a hero's journey--by asking yourself a few simple, but profound, questions." His guide to leadership philosophy and
psychology is intended for those who seek self-improvement and leadership acumen. Evolving into a great leader takes both thought and action,
and Kaufmann addresses this formidable task with the titular four virtues: focus (what are you working on?), courage (what are you afraid of?),
grit (what are you sustaining?), and faith (what are you yielding?). The method requires substantial self-examination and self-discipline, relying
largely on the power of thought. His interest in Zen shows in his strong emphasis on mindfulness. Earnest, encouraging, and thoughtful, this
meditation on the soul of a leader will help readers looking for a path to self-understanding along their journey to greatness. (Sept.)
