SIDELIGHTS

Author Kelly Jamieson has predominantly made a name for herself through her prolific amount of romance fiction. Her work has been acknowledged by USA Today. In addition to her interest in romance, Jamieson is also fond of hockey. This latter pastime informs many of her novels.

Slap Shot and Cross Check

Slap Shot centers on a protagonist by the name of Max Hall. Max works in the hockey industry as a professional player. However, while his career is going extraordinarily well, he is dealing with immense personal struggles. He lost his wife some time ago, and is still picking up the emotional pieces. At the same time, Max is interested in seeking out companionship—but only in the physical sense. When he encounters a woman named Kendra, sparks fly between the two of them on multiple levels. However, as their relationship begins to deepen, Max finds himself at an impasse between moving on and his lingering feelings for her late wife. A Publishers Weekly reviewer said: “This story of healing is touching and the intensity of the sensual encounters swoonworthy.” On the RT Book Reviews website, Bridget Keown remarked: “The book’s opening offers some fun twists on genre traditions, giving these characters a fresh, surprising relationship.”

Cross Check focuses on Ella Verran, a college student, and Ben Buckingham, a fellow college student who has built considerable notoriety for himself as the school’s best hockey player. Ella hasn’t had nearly as much success at school, and is currently struggling with her grades. Ella and Ben happen to know each other through their friends, who are in a relationship with one another, yet Ella and Ben can’t bring themselves to get along. At the same time, despite their belligerent relationship, the two also feel a strong sexual attraction to one another that they find hard to resist. Over time the two come to bond with one another, and their attraction starts to become just as romantic as it is physically charged. However, the two also have several personal demons to face if they’re going to be happy together. Hypable website contributor Sonya Field stated: “If you like new adult and sports romance, then the “Bayard Hockey” series by Kelly Jamieson might just be for you.” On the Smexy Books website, one reviewer commented: “It was great to see [Ella] grow as a character and I felt like the depiction of her grief was true to life, but not overwhelming.”

Hot Shot and Major Misconduct

Hot Shot centers on protagonist Marco Solis, who starts off in a bit of a conundrum. He has been tasked with putting together an engagement party for his business associate and close friend, but he can’t do it alone. He enlists the aid of Carrie Garner, best friend of Marco’s friend’s bride-to-be, in composing just the perfect get-together. While the two are able to work together, Carrie does her best to keep Marco at arm’s length, especially once he begins to express his attraction to her. Carrie has spent years in the modeling industry, and longs to be valued for more than just her beauty. However, Marco is hurt by her negative response to him, as he struggles with deep abandonment issues. Only over time are the two able to get to know each other better and develop their relationship into something more. A Publishers Weekly contributor wrote: “The lovers are likable and their chemistry is strong enough to keep the pages turning.” A Harlequin Junkie website reviewer said: “If you’re looking for a book with very little drama, some humor, and two people putting their differences aside to come together for their friends, then this book may be for you.”

Major Misconduct follows Marc and Lovey, two adults who become roommates by chance and soon find themselves carrying on a secret tryst. Marc is roommates and hockey teammates with Lovey’s brother; Lovey is able to stay with the both of them at their apartment, and immediately becomes interested in Marc. Her propositions reel Marc in, and from there they find their physical interest in each other shifting toward romance. On the Harlequin Junkie website, one writer said: “I’d definitely recommend Major Misconduct for any sports romance lover, or anyone just looking for a fun, quick read.”

No Obligation Required

No Obligation Required protagonist Bailey finds herself with a lot on her plate. She has been tasked with caring for her much younger sister, all while also trying to juggle a lucrative career within the media industry. However, she’s quickly finding that it is very hard for her to make proper time for both of these important roles. She finds that she may have to make room for one more person in her life when she finds herself falling for Mason, her supervisor. The two of them settle into a “friends with benefits” situation, but soon find what they have threatening to develop into something more.

Xpress Reviews contributor Vicky Coffin recommended the book to “fans of hot contemporary romances.” On the RT Book Reviews website, Jacqui McGugins wrote: “There’s more depth to these characters, which will keep readers intrigued and entertained.”

Reward of Three and With Strings Attached

Reward of Three deals with a polyamorous trio by the names of Kassidy, Chris, and Dag. While they have been going strong for quite some time, their decision to become parents may put more strain on their relationship than they could have ever anticipated. On top of this, personal problems building between the three may further threaten their happiness and their futures together. In an issue of Xpress Reviews, Judy Garner said: “Be forewarned: this family keep things hot and very explicit!”

With Strings Attached focuses on three friends: Dylan, Matt, and Corey. At the start of the novel, Matt and Corey are friends with benefits who are comfortable with their arrangement. However, things begin to shake up when Dylan comes to stay with them following an accident that will hinder his surfing career for the time being. Dylan feels an attraction to both Matt and Corey, and proposes that he joins their arrangement and turn it into a threesome—even if that means sacrificing his career. Joyce Sparrow, a contributor to Xpress Reviews, expressed that With Strings Attached “has sizzling appeal.”

Interview with Kelly Jamieson, author of Hot Shot

    By Grant
    In Author Interviews, News, Romance
    18 May 2017
What can you tell us about your new release, Hot Shot?

Hot Shot is book 2 in my Conquistadors series, which is about three Navy SEALs who now own a tequila bar in San Diego. It’s a sort of friends to enemies story, as Carrie and Marco find each other annoying but are stuck hanging out together because their best friends and getting married. There’s definite heat beneath their banter but Marco Solis knows everyone he cares about will leave him, so he’s not looking for a relationship—especially with a woman who’s about to move to Spain for nine months.

What’s the last book you read?

    American Prince by Sierra Simone.

If you were a teacher, what book would you assign to your class?

    Anne of Green Gables.

    What’s on your writing desk?

OMG a lot of junk! I’m constantly writing myself reminder notes, so there are lots of stickie notes and papers and pens. Also a coaster for my coffee (or wine glass!), a scented candle, my pretty calendar and stickers to mark pages, and file folders holding the notes for at least one WIP.

If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

I would like to have dinner with my mom and dad, who have both been gone for a long time – before I achieved success as a writer. I would like to tell them about it. My dad would be proud of me for writing dirty books and my mom would tell me not to let success go to my head.

What will your next adventure be?

I am off to Chicago on a research trip this month! I set a lot of my books in Chicago and while I’ve been there a couple of times, there are some new things I need to explore.

What scene in Hot Shot was your favorite to write?

I love writing sexy banter between hero and heroine, so the scene in the restaurant where they’re talking about their favorite sexual positions was fun to write

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

Having been through some tough times lately, I like to remind myself that’s not the load you carry, it’s how you carry it that matters.

Interview with Kelly Jamieson, author of Back Check

    By Grant
    In Author Interviews, News, Romance
    12 Jan 2017
What can you tell us about your new release, Back Check?

Back Check is book 4 in my Aces Hockey series. It’s a second-chance romance, which can sometimes be tricky. For me, what makes a second chance story work is what drove the couple apart the first time—if it’s something trivial or immature, I’m not as invested in the couple making it work the second time around. But I think there were pretty compelling reasons for why Tanner and Katelyn didn’t make it when they were first together, and even though they tried to find love with other people, they were meant to be together, and now they’re in the time and place they’re supposed to be.

Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I was just a child when I read it for the first time, but I loved, loved, loved Anne. That’s definitely one of the first books that started my love of reading, and I also think it was the start of me loving romance…I so wanted Anne and Gilbert Blythe to be together! That kept me reading all the other Anne books.

You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?

I would invite my author friends PG Forte, Kinsey Holley and Viv Arend because they are awesome. Is that cheating? If it must be authors I haven’t met, I would invite JK Rowling because she’s so inspirational; Marian Keyes, who has to be hilarious; and Kristen Ashley because I think she would be fun to have a cocktail with.

Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?

Oh I would definitely be a figure skater! (I’d say hockey, but that’s just too far-fetched, LOL). I love figure skating, it’s such a great combination of athleticism and artistry. I wouldn’t be a pairs skater though, because those girls are CRAZY letting their partner toss them up in the air and throw them across the ice.

If you could invent anything, what would it be?

Time machine. I want one so bad. That comes from being impatient. I want to be where I need to be instantly!

What TV show have you binge watched?

House of Cards, Scandal and Suits most recently!

What scene in Back Check was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene where Tanner comes to realize he screwed up and has to make things right with Katelyn. It was fun writing the crazy conversation his teammates are having while they’re sitting in a Nashville bar and Tanner is getting drunk, and I loved how his buddies look after him and guide him through what he needs to do—bare his soul and make himself vulnerable by asking the woman he loves to go with him if he gets traded—when the last time he asked her, she turned him down.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

This one expresses what I’ve always believed. Bad things happen to all of us, and it’s how you deal with it that’s important:

“The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you’re made of, not the circumstances.”

Interview with Kelly Jamieson, Author of Shut Out

    By Ben
    In Author Interviews, Romance
    10 Jun 2016
What can you tell us about your new release, Shut Out?
Shut Out is a story about a couple of college kids who’ve had some pretty ugly crap happen in their lives, and how they deal with it. They’ve made mistakes, like most kids do, but they learn from them, and in doing so they see how they can help others …and while they’re doing that, they fall in love. I would say it’s hot and sexy, funny and heartwarming, but also thought-provoking.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?
Anne and Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables.

What books are currently on your night stand?
Since my eReader is on my nightstand, it’s pretty much my entire library! Right now I’m reading Bounty by Kristen Ashley and up next is Steal Me by Lauren Layne.

    BAM. You’re a superhero. What’s your superpower?
Easy! I want to teleport. No more stuck in traffic, no more waiting in airports…I’m very impatient so this superpower would be fabulous.

Who is your favorite leading man from any of your hockey series?
Aaaah!! I can’t pick just one! I love all my hockey guys!

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?
Love, of course, makes my world go round! My fabulous kids and my husband, friends and family, including all the snuggles from my fur baby, and falling in love every time I write a new book…I love love!

What scene in Shut Out was your favorite to write?
Gosh, there were a few that were fun…I think the sex scene in Jacob’s truck was fun. I love combining sex with humor.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Keep your stick on the ice.

Jamieson's fifth Aces Hockey sports contemporary (after Back Check), written entirely from the hero's point
of view, combines a poignant exploration of grief with unabashed enjoyment of sex. Chicago-based hockey
player Max Hall, mourning his wife's death, finds himself in a precarious spot: he wants to get laid but isn't
ready for a relationship. While attending a teammate's wedding, Max has a mutually satisfying encounter
with like-minded New Yorker Kendra Armstrong. Max cannot get Kendra's alluring smile out of his head,
and they find they enjoy each other inside and outside the bedroom. They enjoy planned and unplanned
encounters complete with snappy dialogue, sexually charged repartee, and tender moments, but turbulent
emotions result in uncaring behavior. Max's self-examination about his relationships demonstrates the
difficulty of healing and the awkwardness of moving on. This story of healing is touching and the intensity
of the sensual encounters swoonworthy.

Cross Check
Kelly Jamieson. Loveswept, $4.99 e-book (276p) ISBN 978-1-101-96895-6
Jamieson's clumsy tale of love and hockey involves Bayard College Bears hockey superstar Ben
Buckingham and sophomore Ella Verran, who's on academic probation. Their respective best friends are a
couple, so Ben and Ella see each other often--much more often than they'd like. Despite having no
legitimate reason to antagonize each other, they just rub each other the wrong way. But all it takes is a
single brief pause in the judgmental verbal swipes for lips to touch and passion to melt the ice between
them. As they both share their dysfunctional, complicated family histories, their connection grows.
Jamieson fills out a slender plot with a cast of generally benign characters, scenes from Bayard's hockey
games, and a dialogue-laden narrative that boomerangs from one topic to another. Unfortunately, many of
those topics--including mental illness, suicide, and rape culture--deserve more than the superficial treatment
they get here. Emily Sylvan Kim, Prospect Agency. (July)

Kelly Jamieson. Loveswept, $4.99 e-book
(241p) ISBN 978-0-399-59442-7
Two beautiful, insecure, artistic protagonists resist their obvious attraction to each other in Jamieson's
predictable but enjoyable second Last Shot contemporary (after Body Shot). Intuitive Carrie comes from a
family of successful type A personalities, and has always felt misunderstood. Years of being objectified in
her modeling career make her suspicious of attention from gorgeous Marco, a former Navy SEAL, who
"clearly regard[s] her as an airheaded blond bimbo." He and Carrie's best friend's fiance jointly own the
Conquistador Tequila Bar. When Marco asks for her help planning their friends' engagement party, she
agrees but keeps her distance, reinforcing his impression that he's "the guy nobody wanted." The slow build
to intimacy gives Marco plenty of opportunities to act the gentleman, and the two come to appreciate each
other's artistic talents (photography and welding) before jumping into bed. The anticipatory tension holds
more erotic appeal than their steamy sexual encounters. Some uninspired secondary plotlines (her mother's
unhappiness with retirement, his efforts to improve the bar's food menu) hamper the momentum, but the
lovers are likable and their chemistry is strong enough to keep the pages turning. Agent: Emily Sylvan Kim,
Prospect. (May)

Major Misconduct
Kelly Jamieson. Loveswept, $2.99 e-book (268p) ISBN 978-1-101-88721-9
Any romance reader who can enjoy repeated utterances of "Sweet cheese-its" and "Oh, for the love of
cheese" is going to love Jamieson's first Aces Hockey contemporary and its Wisconsin Cheesehead heroine.
When Lovey Armstrong moves to Chicago and rooms with Duncan, her hockey-star big brother, it soon
becomes clear that he still sees her as a kid in need of his protection. Dune threatens severe bodily harm to
any of his Chicago Aces teammates who so much as dance with Lovey. That includes his other roommate,
Marc Dupuis. As formula requires, Marc and Lovey predictably hit it off, Duncan disapproves, and foulmouthed
hockey players are jarringly juxtaposed with the euphemism-wielding Lovey. This hockey
romance doesn't quite deserve the penalty box, but the cliched plot and the cast of one-note characters may
only be palatable to diehard genre fans. (Oct.)

Bailey Harris, a young media buyer at the Huxworth Packard Agency, is struggling to balance her
professional and personal obligations. As guardian to her ten-year-old sister, she wonders if racing home
from work each night is jeopardizing her career mobility. The last thing she has time for is an office
romance--even if she is wildly attracted to her boss, Mason Ward--a gorgeous man with a mysterious past
and a reputation as a player. When sparks begin to fly and Mason suggests a casual relationship with Bailey
based solely on sex, it seems like the ideal situation for both of them--until deep emotions bubble to the
surface.
Verdict Jamieson's second book in the "Brew Crew" series (after Limited Time Offer) reads well as a standalone

    Author(s): Kelly Jamieson
In her fifth full-length Aces Hockey romance, Jamieson lets fans into the mind of the Aces’ most brooding player, rounding out a supporting character with some impressive results. The book’s opening offers some fun twists on genre traditions, giving these characters a fresh, surprising relationship. However, the plot is stymied by the protagonists’ vacillations and poor communication, making the relationship feel more toxic at times than incendiary. Nevertheless, there is a good deal of heart, humor and believable emotion in this story that will grab the hearts of fans and new readers alike.

Fifteen months ago, Max Hall lost his wife to a rare form of cancer, and in the wake of his loss, he left the only other thing he ever loved — his hockey career with the Chicago Aces. Now, Max is desperate to earn a place on the team once again, and he can’t afford to let anything — or anyone — distract him. When he meets the irresistible, spunky Kendra at a teammate’s wedding, however, Max decides that a one-night stand can’t hurt. But when one night evolves into more, will Max and Kendra find a way to put their pasts aside for each other? (LOVESWEPT, dl $4.99)

The childish pranks of the Brew Crew mask a smart, savvy group of creative men and women who need to mature a bit, but keep their enthusiasm level high. Glimpses at other Crew members present tantali- zing previews for future stories. There’s more depth to these characters, which will keep readers intrigued and entertained. It’s also an interesting look at the inner workings of the advertising business.

Bailey is a good media analyst at the agency but, up until now, she’s been content with her position. She is the guardian for her 10-year-old sister and chooses to keep that part of her life separate. The problem is that networking, at the agency and with clients, involves socializing. As she navigates the logistics, she draws the attention of Mason, executive creative director. Mason is notorious for his playboy ways, but he is also quite brilliant at bringing out the best in his team and keeping clients happy. After drawing Mason’s notice with some timely account suggestions, Bailey finds herself drawing his personal notice, as well. Since neither wants a complicated relationship, they embark on a sensual journey that works for both — until they discover they want more. Unfortunately, Mason’s secrets run deeper and darker than Bailey ever imagined. (SAMHAINPUBLISHING.COM, dl $5.50)

Unfortunately, the San Amaro Singles series gets off to a rough start. Jamieson catches the wave of a recent trend of couples who discover their love for each other only by adding a third person to their bed, although she may have been the one to start it, as this was a digital-first release. Aside from being hot, Dylan never manages to make the reader see why Corey would look past the guy she has right by her side (and in her bed). The sex is hanging 10, but the rest is all wet.

Candy maker Corey has no room in her life for a relationship. She’s busy developing her business and making sure no one ever disappoints her again. Her friends-with-benefits arrangement with microbrewery owner Matt Ferber is just fine. But when Matt’s friend, pro surfer Dylan Schell, turns up to recover from an injury, Corey finds herself attracted to Dylan as well. The only question she has now is whether her friendship with Matt will survive a steamy night with all of them together. (SAMHAIN, Mar., 288 pp., $16.00)

About ‘Cross Check’ by Kelly Jamieson:
A party girl and a clean-cut college hockey player discover that they’re not so different in this sexy, soulful Bayard Hockey novel from the bestselling author of Shut Out and the Heller Brothers series.

Ella Verran has three goals this semester: get off academic probation, repair her relationship with her friend Skylar, and take some responsibility for her life. All of which are hard enough without hot, snobby hockey player Ben Buckingham around to distract her. Ella can’t stand Ben, and she knows the feeling is mutual. But he’s best friends with Skylar’s boyfriend, so he’s always around—taunting and tempting Ella in ways she never thought possible.

As the star forward of the Bayard College hockey team, Ben has goals too, like playing well enough to land a spot on an NHL roster. Ben is perfectly poised on the ice, so why can’t he keep his cool around Ella? Her wild behavior rubs him in all the wrong ways—and a few of the right ones. But as they skate around each other, Ben learns that there’s more to Ella than her bad reputation. And when the line between love and hate starts to blur, he can’t resist crossing over and sweeping her off her feet.

‘Cross Check’ by Kelly Jamieson review:
If you like new adult and sports romance, then the Bayard Hockey series by Kelly Jamieson might just be for you. Even though the first book in this series, Shut Out, came out last summer I just read it over the spring. So I was excited to find out that the next book in the series was coming out this summer. Because who likes to wait? Definitely not this girl.

Much like the first book in the series, Cross Check deals with some heavily emotional issues. However, it’s balanced out nicely by humor and passion so even the heavier bits of the story line don’t drag down the reader for too long. There were plenty of times where I was laughing out loud at some of Ben and Ella’s lines. Particularly when they were trying to fight their attraction to one another.

When the book starts out, the main characters don’t really like each other. Ella and Ben have mutual friends but don’t like being forced to be around one another. However, when they are pushed together it’s quickly revealed that they have much more in common than they think.

They’re alike in simple ways, like the food that they like to eat, but also in the how they are judged by others. In fact, it takes them some time to accept the fact that they have even judged each other too harshly and maybe they don’t hate each other as much as they think.

Both are going through some tough times too. Ella is on academic probation and has to get her act together, she’s also still mending the fences with her best friend. Ben has some dark family secrets and is also having a hard time navigating the process of getting drafted by himself.

Reading them come together, and getting over all their obstacles was lots of fun and hard to put down. It was also a blast getting updates on the familiar characters from the first book in the series. I did feel like they went from just wanting to be casual to deciding to be a couple pretty quickly, but it didn’t take away from the story over all.

Ella and Ben’s happily ever after wasn’t an easy road for them, but it made it all worth it in the end. I’m looking forward to keeping Kelly on my radar and seeing what’s next in the series!

Cross Check by Kelly Jamieson will release on July 25! Pre-order now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, and Kobo. And don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads!

“Good, baby?” I lick her throat. “Um . . . I think . . . I’m burning.” “Yeah . . . me too.” “No, I’m really burning.” Her hands come to my chest and push as she tries to shove me off her. “Jesus, Ben, my vagina is burning! Something’s wrong! Ow!” Stunned and dazed, I pull out and roll off her, blinking at her in confusion. What the fuck?

The heroine of this book, Ella spent her previous school year using partying and sex as a way to cope with her grief. It didn’t work well so now she is committed to being focused on her school work and being a better friend. She supposedly hates Ben, out hero. She finds him pompous.

This is supposed to be a enemies/haters to lovers type of trope, but I didn’t feel that ever hated each other. I never picked up on true hate, definitely some dislike/misunderstanding of the other, but not hate. Ella’s supposed hate for Ben was because he was came off as pompous and too put together. Ben supposed hate for Ella was because she was a party girl. There was an instance where he may have insinuated that she was a slut, but he never outright called her a slut. There were not several instances/examples of why these two should hate each other, so I never bought into that.

Ben is one of the big stars of the hockey team, very smart, and very handsome- obviously. Ben is actually quite nice. He came from a tough background and was using college as an opportunity to start fresh. I actually liked him a lot. He is also pretty open with his feelings, which is refreshing, especially in New Adult.

Ella and Ben have some chemistry so they decide to do the whole, I am in no position to be in a relationship, let’s just have sex relationship. Quickly it develops to more and Ella and Ben enter boyfriend/girlfriend status. It felt different that when Ben asked Ella, she didn’t protest. Only weird insomuch as she was really adamant when they first hooked up that she couldn’t do more.

I have enjoyed several of this author’s books. She frequently incorporates topics that don’t come up in other books like, rape culture/awareness, slut shaming, suicide, filicide, severe depression. Sometimes it is really well integrated in the story, examples- No Obligation Required and Shut Out which I reviewed last year. This time around it felt a little bulky and took up too much page time. In Shut Out the hero was previously and falsely accused of rape. This book is the second in the series, new couple, but they navigate through some slut shaming issues along with the heroine recovering from the loss of a friend who completed suicide (off page). The slut shaming conversation between the men felt a little forced and like it was there to inform me the reader and not a natural conversation between the readers. And while it is an incredibly worthy topic it felt a little off for me. I think another reason it bothered me was because even though the MC’s fight the good fight against slut shaming, they had no issue referring to other women as bitches. I feel like that is a little bit of a mixed message.

All in all this was a decent read. I gave up on believing that they hated each other and tried to think of it as mild dislike. I really liked Ben. Ella was a good heroine as well. It was great to see her grow as a character and I felt like the depiction of her grief was true to life, but not overwhelming. It felt a little too after-school specialy for me in regards to the slut-shaming. But I applaud the author for confronting these real life issues and concerns in her books and making us as readers more aware.

REVIEW: Hot Shot by Kelly Jamieson
Posted August 6th, 2017 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, Category Romance, LoveSwept, Review / 8 comments

In Hot Shot by Kelly Jamieson, Carrie Garner reluctantly agrees to help Marco Solis plan the engagement party of her best friend, Hayden, and his best friend and business partner, Beck. Carrie isn’t crazy about Marco, while Marco is crazy about Carrie. She only has a few weeks before leaving for Spain for nine months, and he’s determined to make the best of that time.

I liked this book but I didn’t love it. Part of the reason is Carrie and her insecurities. She’s a model, yet when Marco tells her she’s beautiful, she believes he’s making fun of her. Her reasoning behind that is weak and I couldn’t buy it. She feels like she has to go to Spain and participate in the design program to prove something to her family, yet none of them seem to want her to go. She gets a lot of praise for her photographs, yet she can’t seem to believe that her pictures are good enough.

Marco has his own issues. His parents were deported when he was fourteen, he was separated from his sister in foster care, and his then-fiancé married someone else while he was a SEAL deployment. He has trust issues, and he has a hard time believing that he was good enough for anyone, or that anyone would want to stick around for him.
==Okay, so he was aiming too high with her. A blond, blue-eyed model with several sexy swimsuit shoots in her portfolio was probably, no definitely out of his league. Of course she disliked him. He was the guy nobody wanted.==

I was hoping for some closure for Marco in regards to his sister. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t seem to try harder to find her. There’s also a brief appearance of Marco’s ex-fiancé that I didn’t find necessary. It felt a bit like it was thrown in there to try to create some drama, only that drama never materialized.

Carrie’s grandmother was probably the funniest character in the book.

“I bet you look good naked.”
Marco froze and blinked a few times. “Uh…”
Carrie’s grandmother chuckled. “Oh come on. You were in the Navy. You can’t be a prude.”
They were seated in chairs on the patio behind Carrie’s parent’s home the next afternoon.
“No, ma’am. I’m not a prude.” He managed a smile, sure his face was flaming red. “And I do look good naked.”
“Ha!” Mrs. Garner slapped her leg. “I wish I could see. Don’t be horrified. I just appreciate the male body.”

This is the second book in the series but it works as a standalone. I haven’t read the first book in the series and while I could tell that Marco and Carrie had met in the previous book, it didn’t feel like I was missing anything between the two.

While this wasn’t my favorite book by this author, it was still a good read. If you’re looking for a book with very little drama, some humor, and two people putting their differences aside to come together for their friends, then this book may be for you.

Marco Solis knows that if he gets too close to people they disappear. His parents were deported back to Mexico when he was fourteen, his fiancée married someone else while he was in the military, and now his business partner’s spending more time with his girl than with Marco. For better or worse, that’s how Marco meets Carrie Garner. She’s legitimately model-hot. She’s also a nut—a wild, artsy, unapproachable nut. So why is Marco so interested in cracking her shell?

Although Carrie Garner is a natural in front of the camera, her dream is to make it as a photographer. Soon she’ll be heading to Spain for design school, and she’ll miss her best friend, Hayden, like crazy. She’ll even miss Hayden’s boyfriend, Beck—but she won’t miss Beck’s partner, Marco. Bossy, brooding, and annoyingly sexy, Marco really pushes her buttons, though he obviously wouldn’t mind pushing her buttons in an up-against-the-wall, hard-and-fast kind of way. The craziest part is, if Carrie lets him do that, well . . . she may never want to leave.

REVIEW: Major Misconduct by Kelly Jamieson

Major Misconduct by Kelly Jamieson: When Lovey moves in with her hockey player major-misconduct-by-kelly-jamiesonbrother and his roommate, the team’s captain, Marc, she never would have guessed she’d be falling in love. Sure, Marc is hot and she was definitely tempted by his chiseled abs and pecks, but who would have thought seducing the uptight captain would become a slow, passionate journey to love.

Marc knew he shouldn’t. He promised Lovey’s brother he wouldn’t go there with her, but when she makes it clear she’s interested, it’s a bit hard to resist the attraction he feels.

“He couldn’t get out of there before she’d jumped up and rushed at him with a fucking dazzling smile, so damned gorgeous he couldn’t get his feet to move and could barely string two words together.”

Behind her brother’s back they engage in a passionate affair. And as they get to know each other, Marc’s drive inspires Lovey to make a real go of her business plan. And her zest for life inspires Marc to open and have a little fun.

I absolutely loved Marc and his “Captain Codger” ways. How he truly cared about his teammates and the others close to him made him the sweetest guy alive. And, of course, his passion for Lovey made him the hottest guy around.

Lovey was so much fun, but I did feel she was a bit too flighty. I definitely admire her starting her own company and working with what she loves, but, as it says all throughout the story, “What Lovey wants, Lovey gets” and I just don’t feel the explanation made up for it enough. I felt bad she suffered as a kid for her brother’s passion, but it was still a bit annoying watching her flit through life, and then hurt Marc so much at the end.

Otherwise, the story is a lot of fun, and quite hot between the two. I’d definitely recommend Major Misconduct for any sports romance lover, or anyone just looking for a fun, quick read.

In Kelly Jamieson’s seductive new Chicago Aces romance—perfect for readers of Sawyer Bennett and Toni Aleo—a fun-loving free spirit tempts an uptight hockey star into opening himself up to love.

As the captain of the Chicago Aces, Marc Dupuis is all business. The apartment he shares with his teammate and best friend, Duncan, is a refuge from the pressures of fame. But when the sexiest woman he’s ever seen interrupts his early morning coffee wearing only a skimpy cami and matching panties, Marc can’t exactly say he minds. Their chemistry is off the charts. Unfortunately, this girl’s no random puck bunny. She’s Duncan’s little sister—and she’s moving in.

Lovey Armstrong could stare at Marc’s chiseled abs and listen to his French-Canadian accent all day. She just has no idea what’s going on inside his head: When he’s not charming her pants off, Marc makes a Zamboni machine seem warm and cuddly. Lovey knows the team’s bro code says no messing with sisters, but all these mixed messages are hard on a girl’s self-esteem—especially since she’s finally getting her new life together in Chicago. She decides he’s worth another shot . . . because if anyone can melt the ice around Marc’s heart, it’s Lovey

    Reward-of-Three

    Dear Ms. Jamieson,

There’s just no way I can talk about this novella without giving away things which might be regarded as spoilers. So, be ye warned all who read what follows.

I admit to a weakness for m/m/f menage stories and I think Rule of Three was among the best I’ve read in that niche. Reward of Three takes up the story three years after the events of Rhythm of Three and begins when Kassidy announces her pregnancy to Dag and Chris. They had talked about the challenges of raising a child in a poly relationship but had talked to other poly families and decided it’s what they wanted to do. They had also decided that both Dag and Chris would be the dads, regardless of biology.

The beginning of the story felt a bit sparse and I would have liked to have seen some of the discussions about living in a menage and raising children rather than just being told about them.

But then, something happened and it distanced me so much from the story that it was difficult to read the rest and hard to remain engaged at all. This is the potentially spoilery bit y’all. I think the blurb broadly hints at what happens and oh how I wish I had read it more carefully because if I had, I would not have requested this book for review. Kassidy has a miscarriage and the bulk of the rest of the book takes place in the week following as the trio grieve individually and decide whether they can weather the storm together or whether this will break them.

I do have difficulty reading about pregnancy loss. It’s a personal hot button – without going into too much detail, I think it’s easy to guess why. I either have a very strong emotional reaction and lose my shit completely or I withdraw emotionally from the story so as not to lose my shit. The latter happened to me here. I’m not sure that has anything much to do with the way the book was written but it did inform my experience of it. That being the case, my grade probably needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

I wouldn’t want to suggest that each person who experiences pregnancy loss feels the exact same way. Of course they don’t. For an unwanted pregnancy, I imagine a miscarriage could even be a relief. People grieve in different ways and none of those ways are wrong. That said, I found it insulting in the extreme for Dag and Chris to be getting it on the day after Kassidy loses their baby (she’s sleeping in a different room because she wants space). I get that lovemaking can be a way to feel alive and connected after a loss. But still. (Remember, I was pretty shut down when I was reading and I still was pretty flabbergasted by this).

There were aspects of Kassidy’s reaction which rang very true (even as I was reading with my eyes half closed because I didn’t want to know) and I expect that other readers will feel quite moved by her grief. The book is only about 100 pages and most of it covers about a week. One week is just the tip of the iceberg for someone who suffers a miscarriage of a much wanted baby (as was the case with Kassidy). I found it extremely difficult to believe and/or accept that Kassidy would be up for vigorous sex with both men ONE WEEK after a miscarriage. She was 10 weeks pregnant so it’s not like she had a heavy period. She would likely still have been bleeding. Now, some people don’t mind having sex when there’s blood but a) it wasn’t mentioned and b) that kind of blood has a different emotional qualilty to me and I just could not and did not want to go there.

There is a happy ending for the trio as they work through their various griefs. While I don’t think the novella suggests that they’re all fine and dandy after a week (which I appreciated) I did nevertheless get the impression that the worst was over. Um, no.

There is also a happy epilogue one year after and I think readers can guess what happens there. For me, that was almost harder to read.

So, I’m probably the wrong person to review the book and really, I wish I hadn’t read it. I think it had too much sex for the content and tone and I found the juxtaposition jarring. The first book was a little gem but this was a disappointment on a number of levels, some of which had nothing to do with the story really. I’m not sure what use this review is to anyone and the grade is probably pretty rubbery all things considered. But, for what it’s worth, I give Reward of Three a C-.

    Regards,
    Kaetrin
