WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Juan Gimenez is an Argentine comic book illustrator known for his “extremely detailed renditions of machinery, chiefly in the war and science fiction genres,” according to a contributor to the Humanoids publisher website. Born in Mendoza, Argentina, in 1943, Gimenez learned industrial design in high school and then traveled to Barcelona, Spain, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Back in his native Argentina, Gimenez began his career as an illustrator for comic books for various Argentine and Spanish publishers. In 1970 he left Argentina and settled in Spain.
By 1979, Gimenez was making a name for himself with his series “Leo Roa,” published in France and written and illustrated by Gimenez. Published later in book format as Leo Roa: The True Tales of Leo Roa, it tells the story of a young journalist, Leo Roa, who is searching for a major scoop and has numerous silly adventures in space dealing with beautiful galactic women, alien pets, and space pirates. Among Gimenez’s other notable works are The Metabarons, written by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and The Fourth Power, which Giminez wrote and illustrated. Gimenez, who has been repeatedly voted the best artist by his European audience, continues to produce illustrations for various publishers, including the sword-and-sorcery trilogy “Moi, Dragon” in 2010, and “La Dernière Vie” in 2011. He also illustrated the three-part 2011 space opera series “Segments,” written by Richard Malka.
The Metabarons gathers stories from a long-running science fiction series in Europe featuring a dynasty of powerful warriors in a far-future world. The work mixes a bit of Greek mythology with a series of violent encounters; the only way the next Metabaron can assume power is by defeating his father in a fight to the death. A Publishers Weekly reviewer felt that these comics are “both stunningly illustrated and utterly bananas.”
With The Fourth Power, Gimenez serves up more science fiction in a tale of interplanetary conflict. A female fighter pilot, Exether Mega, crash lands behind enemy lines and must make her way through blockades and evade enemy patrols. Along the way, she discovers the secrets of her mission and of the looming war between the Planetary United States and the alien Krommiun race. A Publishers Weekly Online reviewer noted of this work: “While its clean, colorful … artwork delights the eye, there is very little meat to the tales.” The reviewer further termed it a “feast for the eyes that does not tax the brain.”

Juan Antonio Giménez López (born November 16, 1943) is an Argentine comic book artist.
Biography[edit]
Giménez López was born in Mendoza, Argentina. He finished his high school education as an industrial designer and later attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona (Spain).
His first stories, for Argentine editors such as Colomba and Record, were largely inspired by Hugo Pratt (during the years he spent in Argentina) and Francisco Solano López. Back to Spain, he worked for Spanish (Zona 84, Comix International) and Italian (Lanciostory, Skorpio) magazines. His work of this period is mainly related to war and science-fiction genres.
In 1980, he designed the "Harry Canyon" segment of the film Heavy Metal. During the 1980s, he collaborated with several European magazines, including the Spanish 1984, the French Metal Hurlant and the Italian L'Eternauta, experimenting with graphical and narrative innovations. To this period dates what is ranked among his best series, the short science-fictions stories known under the title of Time Paradox. Also noteworthy are The City, written by Ricardo Barreiro and Le Quatrième Pouvoir (The Fourth Power), which he wrote by himself.
Giménez's style has become famous for the extreme attention he devotes to technical and historical details; his series Pik As has been defined as "a comic encyclopaedia of World War II."[1]
Giménez also collaborated with important authors such as Carlos Trillo, Emilio Balcarce, Roberto Dal Prà, and Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky, with whom he authored the popular Metabarons saga started in 1992.

Juan Gimenez ( artist )
Biography :
Born November 26th, 1943 in Mendoza, Argentina.
Gimenez finished his high school education as an industrial design major and advanced his artistic education by attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Spain, where he studied drawing. For the next few years, he dedicated himself to the drawing of comic books, both back in his native Argentina with such publishers as Colomba and Record, as well as in Spain, contributing to magazines such as Zona 84, and Comix International. By this point, Gimenez had made quite a name for himself for his extremely detailed renditions of machinery, chiefly in the war and science fiction genres. His art further propelled him to international collaborations, and it was in 1979 that he was first published in France with a series of titles including “Leo Roa," which he also wrote. The following year, he participated, as a creative designer, on a segment of the film “Heavy Metal." For the next decade, he continued his work in comic book magazines, notably the French comics anthology Metal Hurlant and the Italian L'Eternauta.
The 1990s saw him strengthening his fan base as he was repetitively voted best artist by European audiences, a recognition that was mirrored in the festival and critical realms, with such awards as the Gaudi award at the Feria Internacional del Comics de Barcelone, in 1990. In 1992, he meets Alejandro Jodorowsky for the first time, and the two began work on “The Metabarons," a sci-fi saga of epic proportions in both art and story. It is to this day regarded as one of the true graphic novel classic of the genre and it continues successful sales around the world.
Gimenez currently maintains a consistent yet varied workload, lending his talents as illustrator to covers for CD albums and novels, as well as serving as a concept artist on video games, and motion pictures. He also remains in high demand as a graphic novel artist, collaborating with some of Europe's most acclaimed authors such as Carlos Trillo, Emilio Balcarce, and Roberto Dal Prà, when he is not writing his own stories as he successfully continues to do, as with “The Fourth Power" collection.

Juan Gimenez is an Argentine comic book artist from Spain, who is specialized in science fiction comics for Les Humanoïdes Associés. He was born in Mendoza, Argentina, where he studied industrial design. He later went to Barcelona, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Back in Argentina, he made his first comics for the important Argentine publishing houses Colomba and Record, but eventually turned to advertising and animation. In 1970, he left South America for good and settled at the Spanish Costa Brava. There, he often worked in collaboration with Carlos Trillo or Ricardo Barreiro for Spanish magazines like Zona 84 and Comix International, but also for Italian publications such as LacioStory and Skorpio.

Léo Roa
Giménez first established himself as a master of science fiction with his books 'Léo Roa' (1985) and 'Le Quatrième Pouvoir' (1987), that were published in France by Dargaud. A second 'Léo Roa' book was published by Giménez's regular publisher Les Humanoïdes Associés in 1991. In 1991, he also made the sci-fi one-shot 'Le Regard de l'Apocalypse' with Roberto Dal'Pra for the publishing house Bagheera.
Metabarons by Juan Gimenez
The Metabarons
A year later, he teamed up with scriptwriter Alejandro Jodorowsky to start the sci-fi saga 'La Caste des Méta-Barons' ('The Metabarons') for Les Humanoïdes, a series starring a secondary character from the Incal' series drawn by Moebius. The eighth and final book was published in 2003. From the following year, Gimenez subsequently started to work on new installments in his series 'Le Quatrième Pouvoir', that was also published in English as 'The Fourth Power'.
Moi, Dragon by Juan Gimenez
Moi, Dragon
He moved over to Le Lombard to create the sword & sorcery trilogy 'Moi, Dragon' in 2010 and the diptych 'La Dernière Vie' in 2011. He returned to science fiction in 2011 when he created the ongoing series 'Segments' with Richard Malka for Glénat. Besides comics, Juan Giménez makes illustrations, covers for novels, storyboards for movies and concepts for computer games.

The Metabaron
Alexandra Jodorowsky, Jerry Frissen, and Valentin Secher. Humanoids, $29.95 (114p) ISBN 978-1-59465-153-3
"All this violence and pain fills me with such joy, Tetanus!" If you can get on board with that sentiment, you may be the
audience for the Metabarons series, a long-running Europe'an comics saga conceived by art-film legend Jodorowsky.
The chronicle of a dynasty of super-warriors in the far future, it tosses Greek mythology, Frank Herbert's Dune, and a
bit of the old ultraviolence into a blender and presses frappe. The creators announced the end of the series in 2003 but
have returned with a new volume, which, like its predecessors, is both stunningly illustrated and utterly bananas. The
Metabaron and his faithful robot, Tonto, take on the cartoonishly evil Techno-Admiral, who has cybernetic arms bigger
than his body and dreams of cloning a perfect foe for his nemesis. Dazzling views of spaceships, artificial planets, and
impossibly massive edifices provide a lush backdrop for grimy battles between space jerks. The macho politics and
treatment of women are medieval, but everything becomes futuristic if you put meta in front of it. (Oct.)

The Fourth Power
Juan Giminez. Humanoids, $39.95 (256p) ISBN 978-1-59465-301-8
Having survived a crash landing behind enemy lines during at the start of an interplanetary conflict, female pilot Exether Mega fights her way through blockades and hostiles as the unsavory truth about her mission is slowly revealed. As an impending war between the Planetary United States and the alien Krommiun race prepares to ignite, Mega is hunted by perpetrators of weaponized super-science. Much like the author’s lauded Metabarons series, this volume features planet-hopping narratives for its three stories–also included are “Murders on Antiplona” and “Island-7”–and had the visual spectacle characteristic of European comics. But while its clean, colorful, “recommended for mature readers” artwork delights the eye, there is very little meat to the tales, a fact somewhat masked by tons of action sequences that go on for page after page. If one seeks a feast for the eyes that does not tax the brain, that’s exactly what is to be had in this far-flung space opera. (Jan.)
