SIDELIGHTS

Joseph Fiksel is an academic and researcher with degrees from M.I.T., Stanford University, and La Sorbonne. He serves as the executive director of Ohio State University’s Center for Resilience, which aims to develop a unified approach for modeling risk, sustainability, and resilience in complex systems. In his capacity as a research faculty member of the Integrated Systems Engineering Department, Fiksel works with corporations, governments agencies, and non-profits on collaborations intended to look for new ways of understanding the interconnectedness between environmental, social, and economic interests. He is also principal and cofounder of the Eco-Nomics LLC consulting firm, which also works with sustainable business practices, particularly materials management, supply chain management, product development, and sustainable energy and mobility. He has worked as a consultant in these areas for several decades.

In 2009 Fiksel published Design for Environment: A Guide to Sustainable Product Development. The account centers on advice for corporate development of sustainable processes and products. Fiksel also includes a toolkit for those working in the field of designing for the environment, focusing specifically on product life-cycle management. The account also covers a range of related topics, such as concurrent engineering and product development, ways to employ analysis to evaluate performance trade-offs and design sustainability, and ways to maintain and apply a portfolio of systematic Design for Environment strategies. A contributor to the SciTech Book News labeled Fiksel as being “a recognized authority” in the field of sustainable business practices. The same reviewer insisted that “the book is both well-written and practical.”

Fiksel published Resilient by Design: Creating Businesses That Adapt and Flourish in a Changing World in 2016. Fiksel uses his twenty-five years of experience as a consultant and researcher on sustainable business practices to present his model of how businesses can best adjust to global changes and employ corporate responsible practices at the same time. He illustrates a systems approach that will allow corporations to stay competitive and be able to operate fluidly during periods of recovery and crisis. He guides strategists and risk managers to stay atop potential problems resulting from the instability of a troubled global climate. He emphasizes the need to plan for change in advance and to take advantage of opportunities that would otherwise threaten various aspects of the corporation’s success. In a review in Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, J.P. Miller claimed that the book “will be useful for those taking courses concerned with corporate strategy, risk management … and ecology and society.” Miller “highly recommended” the book for upper-level undergraduate students through professionals in the field.

Building on insights gained from 25 years of research and consulting on sustainable business practices, Fiksel (Ohio State Univ.) provides a
systems approach that will help corporations stay competitive in today's interconnected economy and stressed global climate. To ensure that
business operations perform during crisis and recovery periods, managers must anticipate, prepare for, and respond effectively to marketplace
disruptions and natural disasters. This paradigm fosters resilience and sustainability not only among processes within corporations but also across
the broader, hyper-connected, ecologically challenged competitive marketplace. Fiksel advises established companies to anticipate change and to
recognize and grasp opportunities that threaten the economic, social, and environmental systems on which corporations mutually depend.
Strategists and risk managers in firms dependent on natural resources must adopt a new understanding of adaptability and efficiency to redefine
and redesign their product and service portfolios. With reference to recent and relevant case studies, Fiksel clearly and convincingly lays out a
balanced view of how managers can maximize shareholder value and meet the legitimate interests and demands of global contingencies. This
book will be useful for those taking courses concerned with corporate strategy, risk management, management of ecological changes, corporate
governance, and ecology and society. Summing Up: *** Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, professionals.-
