SIDELIGHTS

Alex Evansley is a writer. After completing a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina, she shifted her focus to writing fiction. In an interview in the From the Journal of a Reader blog, Evansley talked about her recollections of the first book that was recommended to her. She recalled that “my third-grade teacher read the first Harry Potter book to our class every afternoon for about a month that year, and I had no idea it was a series until my dad bought the books for my older sister. Naturally, I stole them, and thus the genesis of my still-alive-and-well obsession.”

Evansley published her debut novel Love Scene, Take Two in 2018. Twenty-year-old television actor Teddy Sharpe has a flight from Los Angeles to Miami to spend the weekend with his occasional girlfriend. He worries that it won’t be a very good weekend, though, since he is upset after doing poorly at an audition for a film adaptation of a bestselling young adult novel. Eighteen-year-old Bennett, the author of that very novel, is on the same flight as Teddy and notices him reading her book. Teddy thinks she looks familiar but cannot figure out where he has seen her. They enjoy their talk on the cross-country flight. After they land in Charlotte, North Carolina, Teddy finds that his continuing flight to Miami has been cancelled due to bad weather. Bennett invites him to her family’s lake house to stay there until he can get another flight. There he begins to relax and drop his Hollywood-actor-in-public personae around her. When he finds out who she is, he wonders if it would be ethical for them to date since the film adaptation of her novel could be the film that makes his career.

A contributor to Publishers Weekly suggested that romance “readers fascinated with Hollywood life (on and off set) should enjoy this flirty of-the-moment tale.” In a review in School Library Journal, Jennifer Rummel commented that “the fleshed-out background characters pull readers into the side plots, tugging at their heartstrings.” A contributor to the Sue’s Reading Corner blog confessed that there were so many things in the novel “I liked: movies, acting, writing, YA novels, a romantic relationship between the actor and writer. But even with all these factors going for the book, I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would.” A contributor to the Buried in a Bookshelf website claimed that “the premise of the book is one of my favorite things ever.” The same reviewer mentioned that Bennett and Teddy “both felt real, because they both had their faults and made their mistakes, but they were still able to move past them and become better versions of themselves.” The Buried in a Bookshelf website reviewer also admitted: “I loved how supportive and positive the relationships between Bennett, her assistant Emmy, and the female lead in the movie, Olivia, were.”

    Love Scene, Take Two
    Alex Evansley
    Published by: Swoon Reads
    Publication date: June 12th 2018
    Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
Debut author Alex Evansley delivers a sweet summer romance in this inventive novel about a young heartthrob and teen author falling in love.
Teddy Sharpe is kind of famous. He might actually be on his way to being really famous, especially if he’d nailed an audition for the lead role in the movie adaption of the newest bestselling young adult book series. There’s just one problem: He totally blew the audition. And he’s stuck in a tiny North Carolina airport. And his maybe-ex-girlfriend kind of just broke up with him.
The weekend isn’t exactly looking good until Bennett Caldwell, author of the very book series he just auditioned for, takes pity on him and invites him to her family’s lake house. Away from the glitz and glam of Hollywood for a few days, Teddy starts to relax . . . and somehow he and Bennett just click. But dating is hard enough when you aren’t the subject of several dozen fanblogs, and the Internet is full of juicy gossip about Teddy and Bennett . . . gossip that Bennett might not be prepared to handle.
Chosen by readers like you for Macmillan’s young adult imprint Swoon Reads, Alex Evansley’s debut novel, written from both Bennett and Teddy’s perspectives, will have teens laughing, swooning, and falling in love along with these fantastically relatable characters.

    Interview with Alex Evansley
If you had to recommend one book to everyone, what would it be?
Hands down, 100% Fangirl, by Rainbow Rowell. I could probably write a novel-length essay on all the things I love about this book.
Do you remember who recommended your first book to you?
My third-grade teacher read the first Harry Potter book to our class every afternoon for about a month that year, and I had no idea it was a series until my dad bought the books for my older sister. Naturally, I stole them, and thus the genesis of my still-alive-and-well obsession. So I’ll give indirect credit where it’s due—Mrs. Cannon, you created a monster.
You go for a blind date and you see your date carrying a book you absolutely dislike, what would you do?
I would actually love everything about this, because I’m all about some healthy debates/arguments.
Is it important to you that your significant other reads/should read?
It’s important to me that my SO wants to share with me something he’s passionate about. I love good stories—books, movies, tv shows…any way I can get them—and I hope that my SO is down with the ridiculous amount of fangirling that comes with that, even if it’s not his thing. And if my SO’s not necessarily into books but loves something else just as much, I want in on that excitement, because there’s intimacy in sharing something close to your heart with someone else, even that person doesn’t love it as much as you do but still gets excited about it because they know it makes you happy.
Tell us about a book that made you weep – downright crying with buckets of tears.
Literally any book in the Harry Potter series (specifically 5, 6, & 7). Just the idea of Harry Potter makes me tear up sometimes, because that was my childhood and the nostalgia that comes with rereading them gets me every single time. I’ve never loved something the way I love those books.

Evansley explores young celebrity romance, texting, and social media in her lively, contemporary debut novel. TV actor Teddy Sharpe, 20, is flying from Los Angeles to Miami for a getaway weekend with his on-again, off-again girlfriend. He's flustered because he 'thinks he's just bombed an important audition for a movie adapted from a bestselling YA book. The attractive young woman across the aisle looks familiar but he can't place her; 18-year-old Bennett recognizes Teddy and the book he's holding (she wrote it), though she doesn't divulge anything. They strike up an easy conversation, and as the plane lands for a stop in Charlotte, N.C., Teddy's flight to Miami is canceled, so Bennett invites him to stay at her family's lake house until he can catch another one. Sweet, intelligent, charming Teddy and accomplished, smart Bennett suffer all the drama and angst of young love, complicated by celebrity status and the power of social media. Romance lovers and readers fascinated with Hollywood life (on and off set) should enjoy this flirty of-the-moment tale. Ages 13-18. (June)

Gr 10 Up--Actor Teddy Sharpe is positive that he just blew the audition his agent scrambled to get him. On a plane to Miami, he meets Bennett, the teen author of a best-selling novel that is being turned into a movie--the very one he just read for. When Teddy's connecting flight is canceled because of bad weather, he's offered a place to stay for the night by Bennett. At her family's lake house, Teddy begins to relax, shed his Hollywood persona, and fall for Bennett. Is it wrong to date the person who could be responsible for making his career? This title showcases celebrity and the inner workings of both acting and writing a successful series. Bennett and Teddy's romance is full of fun and flirty banter, chemistry, misunderstandings and miscommunications, and dealing with fame and gossip. The fleshed-out background characters pull readers into the side plots, tugging at their heartstrings. VERDICT This new adult/older YA title is the perfect summer novel for fans of Jennifer E. Smith, Jenny Han, and Morgan Matson--Jennifer Rummel, Cragin Library, Colchester, CT

    Rating: 5/5 Stars

    Review:
A captivating, humorous, beautiful book, Alex Evansley’s debut novel ‘Love Scene, Take Two’ will leave you tearing through the pages and desperate for more. If you only read one book this summer, this should be it.
Full disclosure, this book has a special place in my heart. I read it two years ago (actually on June 13, 2016, which is only one day off from two years of the release date, which is crazy…), back when it was still called ‘Between Takes’ and was posted on Wattpad. (Side note: I was crazy excited when I learned that it was going to be published, but I have to admit that I was a *little* salty that Swoon Reads decided to change the title. But my favorite cover won, so I can’t complain too much
One of my favorite things about this book is that even though it’s written in third-person, it reads more like it’s written in first-person. Confusing, I know. But hear me out. Alex does such a great job of letting us inside Bennett and Teddy’s heads just enough so that I never felt detached from them, which is a problem that I have run into before with third-person books. So, props to Alex on that one.
The premise of the book is one of my favorite things ever. A book about a teen author who falls in love with the actor playing her book character in the film adaptation of her book? Ultimate goals right there. (Also…can somebody make this book into a movie ASAP? Thanks.) It was also awesome that Bennett got to work on the script too, because that’s actually my dream job — I would love to write scripts and adapt books to media. Until that happens, I’ll just live vicariously through Bennett.
I love love LOVE Bennett, our female protagonist. The first half of the book is more from Teddy’s viewpoint, but in the second half we really get to see who she is, and I love that. Like Teddy, she’s super smart, witty, and sarcastic, but also vulnerable. Another thing I liked about both her and Teddy’s characters was that they weren’t perfect. They both felt real, because they both had their faults and made their mistakes, but they were still able to move past them and become better versions of themselves.
I loved how supportive and positive the relationships between Bennett, her assistant Emmy, and the female lead in the movie, Olivia, were. Even when Bennett was jealous of Olivia, she acknowledged that she had no reason to be and that she didn’t let that get in the way of becoming friends with her. The three of them together were totally awesome, although I would be lying if I said that I didn’t start to totally ship Olivia and Emmy as a couple. Just saying.
Bennett’s cousins, Will and Liz, were also great additions to the story. Will is incredibly kind and sweet, and just all around the person who you would want to be best friends with. Liz is the total opposite of that. Once you read the book, you’ll know what I mean — unfortunately, I think we’ve all had either friends or family members (or both) that have a lot of the same qualities as her. (And if you haven’t, then I hope you never do.) At first, I thought that Bennett was way too nice to her based on all the crap Liz has done to her, but after I thought about it, she just did what most of us would have done in those situations. Liz is her cousin, after all.
I figure I should end this review here, because I could continue on and on and on, and it’s already quite long. Long story short, make sure you go get this book. I’ve included preorder links down below, but it’s always a good idea to stop by your local bookstore to pick up a copy! I promise that you’re going to fall in love with this book just as I did, so do yourself a favor and read it sooner rather than later.
‘Love Scene, Take Two’ will be released by Swoon Reads on June 12, 2018.

    Review
    My rating:

Hello, fellow readers! I’m back with another review! Today’s review is on Love Scene, Take Two by Alex Evansley. From the blurb alone, I knew I wanted to read the book. It had all the things I liked: movies, acting, writing, YA novels, a romantic relationship between the actor and writer. But even with all these factors going for the book, I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would.
Don’t get me wrong; the beginning was pretty great. I loved reading Teddy’s perspective and seeing how nervous he was with things that mattered to him. Also, it allowed readers to delve a bit more into his character to understand the motivations behind his actions. And yeah, I didn’t always agree with his choices, but most of the time, I understood where he was coming from (except this one part where, for the life of me, I can’t wrap my head around).
And then the POV switch happened and Bennet became the protagonist. This is when things started to go downhill for me. I just felt as if Bennett’s POV was too much for me sometimes, because I didn’t understand the reason why she pushed Teddy away. Maybe it was because of trust issues or just because she’s a private person. Either way, it doesn’t explain why acted the way she did after knowing someone for two days! And what’s worse is that we know she can be witty and a joy to talk to, seeing how she was in the first half of the novel through Teddy’s POV, but by the second half, she’s pretty reclusive and is prone to biting people’s heads off. I’m not saying that protagonists shouldn’t have an off day or feel angry or lash out, because that’s the whole point to them being relatable. What I don’t like is the fact that her feelings seem too strong for barely knowing someone. But that’s just my opinion; feel free to disagree!
Well, that’s all I have to say about Love Scene, Take Two by Alex Evansley. It wasn’t as great as I thought it would be, but overall, it was okay. If anyone wants to read it though, the book is coming out this Tuesday June 12th!
    Have a nice day, everyone!
