SIDELIGHTS

Jeffrey Dixon is an academic and historian. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and political science/history from Minnesota’s Concordia College before going on to complete a Ph.D. in 2001 in political science from Rice University, where he wrote his thesis on the way that third-party military intervention contributed to the outcomes of civil wars. After graduation, he served as a senior lecturer at Pennsylvania State University for a year before becoming an instructor at Wright State University. From 2006 until 2009 he served as an assistant professor at Tarleton State University-Central Texas before joining the faculty at Texas A&M University-Central Texas in 2009.

Dixon eventually became the Distinguished Graduate Faculty and associate professor of political science at Texas A&M University-Central Texas. There he serves as the cohost of the Correlates of War Civil War Dataset. His research interests include the causes, durations, and conclusions of civil wars. On these topics and others, he has published articles in academic journals, such as International Studies Review and Civil Wars.

Dixon published his first book, A Guide to Intra-state Wars: An Examination of Civil, Regional, and Intercommunal Wars, 1816-2014, in 2016 with coauthor and Global Women’s Leadership in International Security president Meredith Reid Sarkees. Dixon draws much of his research from the Correlates of War (COW) Project, which posits that those who wish to have peace should study war. The account compiles hard data on interstate civil wars from the COW Project in its unique mix of history and political science. The book is divided into chapters that focus on wars on each continent, ordering the corresponding wars chronologically. The book starts with the First Caucasus War of 1818 to 1822 and continues up to Yemen’s Rada’a War of 2014. The authors construct a narrative on the conflicts and offer other statistics and demographics, such as outlining the participants of the conflict, the dates of the events, how many deaths were recorded on each side, the size of the military forces involved, the origins of the conflict, and what its ultimate outcome was. The authors also discuss how coding rules for the cases were applied and also how the variables of the conflicts were dealt with.

Reviewing the book in Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, J.A. Knapp observed that Dixon presents his information “in true scholarly fashion.” Knapp stated: “Exquisitely indexed and well referenced, the work offers a unique perspective on warfare.” Knapp said that A Guide to Intra-state Wars is “highly recommended” for readers at all academic levels.

Si vis pacem, studium bellum. ("If you want peace, study war.") This is the philosophy of the Correlates of War (COW) Project, from which the
data for this important reference work are drawn. Launched in 1963, COW provides longitudinal data on wars, and this new work by Dixon
(Texas A&M Univ., Central Texas) and Sarkees (president, Global Women's Leadership in International Security) is a collection of their data on
intrastate (what are usually called civil) wars. COW data sits at the intersection of history and political science and provides hard data that can
often prove elusive. Each chapter is devoted to a particular continent, listing all the conflicts therein in chronological fashion. More than 500
conflicts are detailed, from the "First Caucasus War of 1818 to 1822" to the "Rada'a War of 2014 to present" in the Arabian Peninsula. In addition
to a clear narrative on each conflict, the authors list the participants, dates, sizes of military forces, deaths on each side, who initiated the conflict,
and its outcome. In true scholarly fashion, details on how coding rules were applied in each case are provided, and an entire chapter is devoted to
describing how variables are defined. Exquisitely indexed and well referenced, the work offers a unique perspective on warfare. Summing Up:
*** Highly recommended. All academic levels; general readers.--J. A. Knapp, Penn State University
