SIDELIGHTS

Although she currently lives in Minneapolis with her husband and children, romance writer Dylann Crush draws on her Texas heritage for her romance novels All-American Cowboy and Cowboy Christmas Jubilee. Both are set in the small Texas town of Holiday. All-American Cowboy features the burgeoning relationship between the manager of the local bar and dance joint and the grandson of its recently deceased owner. “Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Walker’s only source of funds,” explained a Publishers Weekly reviewer, “is managing a historic honkytonk, Rambling Rose.” Charlie is a local girl, born and bred in Holiday, and she had a warm relationship with Sully, the former owner. When Sully’s grandson Becket Sullivan Holiday III arrives from Manhattan to take charge, however, he brings the winds of change with him. “There were lots of fireworks, too, because Charlie isn’t about to let city dude waltz into town and mess with Sully’s legacy, The Rambling Rose,” explained Sophia Rose in Delighted Reader. “She rides Beck hard at first thinking he ignored his granddad.” Eventually, after numerous complications, Charlie and Beck recognize their mutual interest and an attraction develops. “All-American Cowboy is a fun read,” assessed Randee Green in Randee Green Book Reviews. “The romance between Charlie and Beck is very sweet. There is also a lot of humor in the novel that will have the readers laughing out loud. The scene at the pig beauty pageant had me laughing so hard that I was crying.”

In Cowboy Christmas Jubilee, the outsider is a biker girl from Los Angeles who arrives in Holiday unexpectedly after breaking up with her abusive boyfriend and is forced to stay when her motorcycle breaks down. Joy Jacobs (known as “Jinx”) finds herself “stranded in aggressively quaint Holiday,” said a Kirkus Reviews contributor, where “Deputy Cash Walker has his hands full with his seven-year-old daughter.” Jinx turns to the Rambling Rose to find a job while her bike is repaired, and she and Cash are slowly drawn into each other’s orbits. “She’s falling in love with Cash and his daughter,” wrote a Kirkus Reviews contributor, “and for the first time in her life, she feels like she just may have found a place to call home.” “I enjoyed all the holiday activities that take place in town. I also love the small town of Holiday,” said Randee Green on the Randee Green Book Reviews. “I wish I could take a trip to Texas to hang out with the Walkers.”

Dylann Crush writes contemporary romance with sizzle and sass. A romantic at heart, she loves her heroines spunky and her heroes super sexy. When she’s not dreaming up steamy storylines, she can be found sipping a margarita and searching for the best Tex-Mex food in Minnesota.

Although she grew up in Texas, she currently lives in a suburb of Minneapolis/St. Paul with her unflappable husband, three energetic kids, a clumsy Great Dane, a rescue mutt, and a very chill cat. She loves to connect with readers, other authors and fans of tequila.

Fleeing California, Jinx Jacobs winds up in Holiday, Texas, when her motorcycle breaks down on the way
to New Orleans. Though she's a loner, she becomes entangled with the local sheriff's deputy, his young
daughter, and a town tempting her to give love a chance.
Realizing her sleazy boss (and ex-boyfriend) is involved in dealing drugs, Jinx takes the money he owes her
and begins a motorcycle trek from California to New Orleans, where a friend has a bartending job for her.
During her ride, she discovers a huge stash of gift cards in her bag, the kind that her ex used to launder
money from drug deals. When her bike breaks down in Texas, she's aided by Cash Walker, a local sheriff's
deputy who definitely feels like she's hiding something but is attracted to her nonetheless. Soon Jinx has a
job, a place to stay, and a connection to a growing number of people in the town and to the Walker family.
She's falling in love with Cash and his daughter, and for the first time in her life, she feels like she just may
have found a place to call home and people she can trust. Yet when Jinx's past comes knocking, Cash is
quick to question his feelings for her. Some weak development mars the book. Jinx and Cash fail to
communicate on almost every level other than in bed and through his daughter; a detail about Cash owing
money to a curse jar every time he swears is overused to the point of grating; and the characters can be
uneven. Yet author Crush's sophomore effort still manages charm, humor, a vast array of quirky Texas
characters in a community readers will love, and a couple they'll root for anyway.
Readers will enjoy returning to Holiday, Texas, with another fun, flirty title.

Holiday, Tex., the locale for this uneven contemporary, is full of holiday cheer, kindly characters, and
charm, none of which Joy "Jinx" Jacobs was looking for when she set off to ride her motorcycle from
California to New Orleans. But when the bike breaks down, she's stranded in aggressively quaint Holiday.
Deputy Cash Walker has his hands full with his seven-year-old daughter, Kenzie. The last thing he needs is
for his precocious child to become enamored of the teal-haired, tattooed, pierced Jinx--because then he'd
have to admit his own attraction to the outrageous biker. When Jinx finds she's mistakenly taken valuable
gift cards from her drug-dealing ex-boyfriend and former boss, she decides to use the goods for good, which
lands her in hot water that she'll need Cash to get her out of. Cash and Jinx are an unlikely pair, but their
connection works. However, readers may need a dose of strong eggnog to get them through the slow start.

Crush's small town contemporary debut is amusing, interspersing rural pig hijinks with classic country/city
romance in Holiday, Tex. Charlotte "Charlie" Walker's only source of funds is managing a historic honkytonk,
Rambling Rose. Upon the death of the Rose's owner, Sully, the property is bequeathed to his
grandson, New Yorker Beck Holiday, who never even met Sully. From their initial meeting, when Charlie
uses her dusty truck to pull Beck's shiny SUV out of a ditch, their attraction and compatibility is clear, and
the romance is hindered mostly by Beck's real estate shark father, who opposes it at every turn. Beck's
search for family and emotional connections, which Charlie possesses in abundance, complements his
desire for Charlie, while Charlie's painful past and long-denied need for intimacy are eased by Beck's
generous nature. Last-minute mischief enlivens the expected yet charming climax. The southern Texas town
has a glaring lack of Latino characters, but this story is otherwise recommended for readers hoping for an
idyllic portrait of isolated country life. Agent: Jessica Watterson, Sandra Dijkstra Literary. (July)

    The Delight
City meets Country in this light and frolicking new series about a small town in Texas and its unique and legendary Honky Tonk bar by new to me author. Quirky folk, city guy disasters, secret clauses in a will, and an old legendary place had a bit of magic for a hot summer afternoon of reading.

    Review
All-American Cowboy was one that offered me few surprises. I read the blurb, loved the idea of a new cowboy romance, some humor and misunderstanding, and that was pretty much what I got. It hit me just right with the sunny and sassy writing style, plot, and colorful characters. There was enough depth due to Charlie’s past grief and Beck’s big choice about the old Rambling Rose and his family’s past pain and legacy.

As can be expected when a corporation guy from Manhattan hits ranching town Texas, there was lots of humor. I felt sorry for the poor guy because nobody went easy on him through the adjustment. There were lots of fireworks, too, because Charlie isn’t about to let city dude waltz into town and mess with Sully’s legacy, The Rambling Rose. She rides Beck hard at first thinking he ignored his granddad and only has cold cash inside instead of a heart, but learns things aren’t always what they appear. Just like Beck is hearing about his family legacy and his grandfather in positive terms for the first time and struggles because his hard-nosed father rides him constantly and there is a part of him that keeps trying to make a connection with the man.

I saw where several little secrets and misunderstandings were going to come back and bite them both in the tush and it was just a matter of waiting it out to see when the storm broke. Oh man! And, how!

Incidentally, the pig is the real main character of the story. Sooo cute!

All in all, it was adorable and fun, big-family/small town, and some sassy romancing just the way I like. I will definitely be dropping in for the next installment in the Holiday, Texas series and heartily recommend this to those who love light and slightly spicy contemporary cowboy romance.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY (Holiday, Texas #1) is Dylann Crush’s debut romance novel. The novel is due out on July 3rd 2018 by Sourcebooks Casablanca.

Charlotte “Charlie” Walker and Becket Sullivan Holiday the third couldn’t be more different if they tried. But that doesn’t mean that they can’t fall in love. Country girl Charlie was born and raised in the small town if Holiday, Texas. She’s never traveled beyond the state line, and has pretty much dedicated her life to running the local dancehall and being there for her extensive family. City boy Beck grew up as a spoiled, rich kid in Manhattan. When Beck inherits his grandfather’s dancehall, he takes a break from his job at his father’s company and travels to his father’s hometown to learn about his family’s history. Beck also has to figure out what the heck he’s going to do with his grandfather’s dancehall. Charlie has been managing the Rambling Rose Dancehall for eight years now, and she’s more than a little apprehensive when this city slicker comes to town to take over her dancehall. Charlie find herself torn between helping Beck run the Rambling Rose and running him out of town so that she can inherit the dancehall for herself. Charlie also finds herself torn between loving and hating Beck.

Let me start by pointing out that ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY of full of countless handsome, sexy cowboys. And, if that is your thing, then you are definitely in for a treat. Even if handsome, sexy cowboys aren’t your thing (and I seriously wonder what is wrong with you if you don’t have a thing for cowboys), you’re still going to love this contemporary romance novel. Charlie Walker is a sassy, kick-butt leading lady. Her past slowly unfolds throughout the novel, showing why she is ready but also reluctant to not only move on with her love life but with her life in general. Beck starts out as the annoying, arrogant Yankee from New York City, but he’ll grow on the reader just as he grows on Charlie. As Charlie stretches her wings beyond the limited life she has allowed herself since her last relationship, Beck begins to embrace the past and the legacy that his father tried so hard to deny him. Charlie and Beck are both very likable characters, and their relationship develops naturally over a period of a few months. There are misunderstandings and fights just like in any relationship. The supporting cast is also very likable. Charlie’s brothers are her own personal army of protectors, and the rest of the family and townspeople all added to the story and plot. But it’s the Rambling Rose’s mascot – Baby Back the pig – that steals the show! Dylann Crush also brings the Texas Hill Country to life through her descriptions.

ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY is a fun read. The romance between Charlie and Beck is very sweet. There is also a lot of humor in the novel that will have the readers laughing out loud. The scene at the pig beauty pageant had me laughing so hard that I was crying. I’m looking forward to the second book in the Holiday, Texas Series – COWBOY CHRISTMAS JUBILEE.

A REVIEW OF COWBOY CHRISTMAS JUBILEE BY DYLANN CRUSH

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

COWBOY CHRISTMAS JUBILEE is the second novel in the “Holiday, Texas” series by Dylann Crush. The novel will be available on October 30th 2018 by Sourcebooks Casablanca.

Jinx Jacobs – the tough-as-nails biker chick – is fleeing Los Angeles and her abusive, drug-dealing ex-boyfriend when her motorcycle breaks down outside of Holiday, Texas. Stranded in the holiday obsessed small town until her motorcycle can be fixed, Jinx takes a job at the local dancehall and winds up getting drawn into the lives and various goings-on in Holiday. Deputy Cash Walker – the country boy and single dad – doesn’t know what to make of the new woman in town or the feelings that she evokes in him. What Cash does know is that Jinx – with her dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos – is not the type of woman he would normally fall for. Jinx has never had much of a family and none of her past relationships were stable. Getting drawn into Cash’s life and family leaves her longing for the family she never had and wishing for a future that she never imagined. When Jinx’s past catches up to her, she and Cash have to decide if a future together is worth it.

COWBOY CHRISTMAS JUBILEE is a great follow-up to the first novel in the series, ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY. Cash Walker is the older brother of the leading lady from ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY, and both novels take place in the small town of Holiday, Texas. Charlie and Beck, the rest of the Walker family, and some of the other characters from the first novel make frequent appearances in the second novel as well. This gives the reader a chance to catch up with the characters they met in ALL-AMERICAN COWBOY, and see how their fictional lives are progressing.

Both novels in the Holiday, Texas series are heartwarming, sexy, and funny. The characters are endearing. Jinx and Cash are both lovable characters, as is Cash’s daughter. Kenzie’s antics add extra humor to the novel, and she serves as a driving force in bringing her dad and Jinx together. The romance between Jinx and Cash is very realistic, and the novel is well plotted. I enjoyed all the holiday activities that take place in town. I also love the small town of Holiday. I wish I could take a trip to Texas to hang out with the Walkers.
