SIDELIGHTS
An expert on introversion, Michaela Chung is an author, life coach, public speaker, blogger, and entrepreneur. She has published more than 200 articles on various topics relating to introversion and has written the 2016 book, The Irresistible Introvert: Harness the Power of Quiet Charisma in a Loud World. She has worked in the fields of communication and self-development strategies and created the popular Web site, Introvert Spring. Her work in helping introverted people become more charismatic has been covered by news and business organizations including INC.com, Lifehack, CBC Radio, and The Chicago Tribune. On her Introvert Spring Web site, she commented that introverts are “dreamy idealists who are generally easy going, but fiery and fierce when our core values are violated.” She said that sometimes it’s okay to stand on your desk and just yell.
Before beginning her journey toward a more enlightened life, Chung quit her job, packed a suitcase, sold everything else she owned, and traveled around the world to twelve countries on five continents, where she learned that introverts can embrace who they are and live a fulfilled life. Of herself, Chung says that she lives in furnished apartments and moves every three to four months, mostly avoiding anything that involves commitment. She calls her fellow introverts her innie friends.
In The Irresistible Introvert, Chung provides fresh advice, resources, and exercises for introverts to feel confident, let go of the feeling that they are never good enough, stop listening to people who tell them what they should or could be, and to grasp their inner wisdom and sense of purpose. Introverts no longer have to keep their voice and talents hidden. In this self-help guide, Chung tells readers to let go of feeling frightened and to hold on to valuable emotions.
Like Susan Cain’s Quiet book on introverts, Chung’s book adds to the growing literature on introverts’ position in the world. Calling Chung’s book “A great morale-booster for introverts,” Deborah Bigelow in Library Journal praised Chung for breaking down the myth that extroverts are the only ones who can have charisma. In the book, Chung describes how introverts no longer have to leave their comfort zone and go against their nature to be recognized and respected. Introverts can own their introversion while they learn to let people see their good natured traits including loyalty, intuition, and empathy in ways that don’t require them to do things they feel uncomfortable about. She hopes that introverts will start a quiet revolution.
Chung also attempts to change stereotypes and social norms that reward people who are the most boisterous and extroverted, like celebrities and politicians, and that ostracize or condemn quiet people. She shows how extroverted people can shed their masks and learn to be quieter and more introspective. A writer in Publishers Weekly commented: “This is a useful all-purpose guide, particularly for younger readers” and those who have not had the chance to develop life experiences and public speaking skills. The writer also noted that Chung offers instruction on making slight behavioral adjustments, creating time to recharge, getting the most out of loud or overcrowded social situations without becoming overstimulated or uncomfortable, identifying goals, and project when speaking.
Chung offers tips and tricks to help introverts find their footing and express themselves. She provides compassionate and insightful guidelines as she encourages introverts to love themselves, but also to use their voice to express confidence and assertiveness. Introverts can learn to draw other people in through magnetism, appreciate their own gifts, be appreciated by others, express themselves creatively, and become self-assured, assertive, and powerful. She explains ways to master the art of quiet magnetism, gain self-esteem, become more authentic, manage energy for effective engagement with others, establish intimacy, and cultivate communication skills.

About Michaela
I am an introvert author, coach and entrepreneur. My first real, live, hold-it-in-your-hands book baby, The Irresistible Introvert: Harness The Power of Quiet Charisma in a Loud World, is out now! I also share my best resources and exercises for being a confident and compelling introvert in my two online courses.
But my most important credential is my personal story. Three years ago, I quit my job, sold everything that wouldn’t fit in a suitcase, and set out on my hero’s journey toward a life of greater meaning and purpose. Since then, I’ve visited 12 countries on 5 continents. I’ve lived in Mexico, Australia, and Canada, and spent a good chunk of time in the U.S.A, Thailand and Colombia.
It turns out my purpose is to help other introverts embrace who they are and live their best innie life. As a member of my introvert tribe, you, dearest, have been an important part of my journey. Thank you.
We introverts are in this together.
Now it’s your turn to go on your own hero’s journey. Don’t worry, you can do it right where you are. The true odyssey is the journey inward. Happy travels, innie friend.

If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you probably already know a fair few things about my personal life. You’ll know that three years ago, I quit my job, sold everything that wouldn’t fit in a suitcase, and set out on my hero’s journey toward a life of greater meaning and purpose.
You’ll know that since then, I’ve visited 12 countries on 5 continents. I’ve lived in Mexico, Australia, and Canada, and spent a good chunk of time in the U.S.A, Thailand and Colombia.
If life is a destination, I’m taking the scenic route. Good thing it’s just one long winding journey with sunsets, heartbreak, and cows that offer up blank stares as you whizz by.

It has been a true odyssey, made up of equal parts sunshine and shadows. Tears, too. Sometimes I felt like the uncertainty would swallow me whole. Miraculously, I made it back home. And by ‘home’, I don’t mean a physical space.
With the boons of greater wisdom and purpose in hand, I returned to myself. Not the Michaela that everyone said I should be, or could be if I’d stop mucking about. Not the Michaela who always felt like too much, and never enough at the same time. No, not her.
You see, in the space between being and achieving, I’d forgotten that I am enough. My scenic, winding, manure scented journey brought me back to the truth of who I am. And I realized that the real me is not the frightening, horrible person I thought she was. There was no need to hide her away like a dirty secret for so long.
As a member of my innie tribe, you, dearest, have been part of this whole mess of discovery and creation. Thank you.
Now, enough with the sentimental stuff. Let’s move on to the reason why you came here.
Here are 10 things you didn’t know about yours truly:
1. I’m a mermaid. Growing up, my favorite movie was The Little Mermaid. Just like Ariel, I’m always wondering what’s beyond the edges of my world. I’ve crossed many oceans to find out.
2. I’m INFP to a T. INFPs are known for being hopeless romantics, who are mainly interested in the realm of emotions. We are dreamy idealists who are generally easy going, but fiery and fierce when our core values are violated. Yep, that’s me!

3. I love zombies. Did you know that the best zombie slaying weapon is a sword? The worst is a pickaxe. If we were talking in person, I would go into detail about why exactly this is. Zombies are a great conversation starter, by the way, especially when chatting with the elderly or children under the age of two.
4. My world is wrong when I don’t write. For me, writing is like an itch that I need to scratch. Sometimes it’s painful to do so, but it’s always a relief. Simply put, I’m happiest on days when I write.
5. I’m not a real person. I don’t have any of the credentials for it. I own nothing that won’t fit in a suitcase. I live in furnished apartments, and move every 3-4 months. I mostly avoid anything that involves commitment (except when it comes to my innie community, which shows how much I <3 you).
6. I’m single because …
I’m still deciding if my single status is because:
a) I have daddy issues.
b) I have commitment issues.
c) I haven’t found the ideal zombie apocalypse partner.
It is most likely all of the above.

7. I can’t parallel park. Yet another reason I do not qualify as a real person.
8. My biggest regret is …
In college I had an English teacher who used to teach in an inner city school. She told us a story about how one of her students stood on the table, stomped his foot, and yelled, “no more homework,” after she’d given an assignment. She said that sometimes she wished a student would stand up on the table and yell at her like that again. I wanted to do it, but the moment passed. I wish I had. We all would have had a good laugh.
9. I’m a dog person. Despite my musings about introverts and cats, I am actually a dog lover. My dream is to one day have my own little dog. Of course, I will have to wait until I am a real person – one who doesn’t move and travel so often. This could take a while.
10. Onesies are #1. I have a thing for onesie pajamas. They make it feel like Christmas morning all year round!

Michaela Chung. Skyhorse (Perseus, dist.), $14.99 trade paper (208p) ISBN 978-1-5107-0478-7
Life coach Chung educates her fellow introverts on how to effectively use their innate strengths while making slight behavioral adjustments to
achieve self-esteem and earn respect from others. On a mission to combat a perceived social "bias toward extroversion" where gregariousness is
rewarded and the more withdrawn are unappreciated or ostracized, Chung celebrates the introvert's natural magnetism, loyalty, intuition, and
empathy. She covers coping skills for introverts to cultivate, such as creating time and space to retreat and recharge, and tips to "extend our social
batteries" to get the most out of social activities without becoming overstimulated. For those struggling with emotional roadblocks, she suggests
creative expression and clever mental tricks of personification. She also discusses some introversion-specific problems surrounding intimacy and
how to overcome them. Exercises show readers how to "perform an energy audit," identify their own goals and desires apart from societal norms,
and project when speaking. With public interest in introversion currently on the upswing, this is a useful all-purpose guide, particularly for
younger readers who have not had the life experience to develop these skills on their own. (July)

Ever since Susan Cain’s Quiet, introverts have been released from the closet of embarrassment and have realized they deserve respect. Chung, introvert coach, writer, and entrepreneur, breaks down the myth that charisma is reserved exclusively for extroverts. She maintains that when introverts harness their inner nature, they let people see the good parts of themselves that they usually keep hidden, and they can do that in their own calm way. Chung bolsters the introvert’s approach to life and encourages those of that personality style to rediscover their emotions, love themselves, and use their voice to demonstrate confidence and assertiveness. VERDICT A great morale-booster for introverts.
