SIDELIGHTS

Linda Broday is a Texas-based writer of romance novels. Most of her books are set in her home state.

"Texas Heroes" Series

Knight on the Texas Plains is Broday’s first novel and the first book in her “Texas Heroes” series. A Publishers Weekly writer predicted: “Fans of historical romances will be pleased.” A contributor to the Fresh Fiction website suggested: “Linda Broday basically threw together a strange conglomeration of characters that somehow made sense. … Knight on the Texas Plains is worth a look.”

A struggling single mother falls for a disgraced Texas Ranger in The Cowboy Who Came Calling. “With solid minor characters, exciting plots, and sharp dialogue, this lovely romance is another home run by Broday,” commented a critic in Publishers Weekly. A reviewer on the Addicted to Romance website remarked: “This book features a passionate and drama filled story that will definitely test your emotions and mood.” The same reviewer described the book as “an intriguing romantic tale in the American West.”

In To Catch a Texas Star, Marley Rose discovers wounded Roan and takes him in. Eventually, the two fall in love. Monique Daoust, critic on the Fresh Fiction website, suggested: “There was so much happening, so many plot twists added one on top of the other that it became overwhelming and overshadowed what could have been a delightful romance.” Daoust added: “A more streamlined story would have served our romantic couple better. There was no lack of chemistry between Roan and Marley. They were perfectly charming, and even though Roan had some trust issues, they were understandable and handled deftly.” However, a Publishers Weekly reviewer described the book as “riveting” and asserted: “New readers will appreciate the story’s layered mysteries, emotional depth, and believable scenes of attraction.”

"Bachelors of Battle Creek" Series

Texas Mail Order Bride, the opener of another series, finds Delta traveling to tiny Battle Creek, TX to marry a rancher named Cooper, whom she has never met.”There’s little real history underpinning the story,” remarked a critic in Publishers Weekly. The same critic also highlighted the book’s “sparse character development.” However, a writer on the Fresh Fiction website suggested: “Texas Mail Order Bride is a great story about growth, pride, love and care. … Broday gave us just enough to whet our appetite to get to know these men a lot better. The men are hot and sexy and the women are sassy. All the ingredients for a fine new series.” Shelley Mosley, contributor to the Booklist website, commented: “Readers will enjoy the witty banter, the colorful descriptions, [and] the mystery of the villain’s identity.”

Rand, the new owner of a ranch, discovers a woman named Callie living there in Twice a Texas Bride. He gets to know and eventually falls for the traumatized woman. Mosley, writing here in the physical version of Booklist, suggested: “Broday’s novel tugs at readers’ heartstrings while keeping them on the edge of their seats.” Kathe Robin, contributor to the RT Book Reviews website, remarked: “With a touching and gentle, yet rugged and real story, Broday captures the West—and readers’ hearts.”

In Forever His Texas Bride, Brett, who is half-Native American, meets Rayna when both are in jail. He breaks out and brings Rayna with him. A Publishers Weekly writer commented: “The story bounces back and forth between battles and intimacy with impressive regularity.” Sandra Wurman, reviewer on the Fresh Fiction website, remarked: “Broday’s writing style is gritty and real just like the times and characters of each of her books. When you read Forever His Texas Bride you will once again be treated to some of the best dialog and scenery that totally fits the time and place.”

"Men of Legend" Series

To Love a Texas Ranger is the first book in Broday’s “Men of Legend” series. it is followed by Heart of a Texas Cowboy.

In To Marry a Texas Outlaw, a wanted man named Luke falls for an amnesiac named Josie Mosley, the Booklist critic, described the volume as “an unforgettable journey through the Old West.” “This densely plotted historical continues Broday’s tradition of well-realized, emotionally rich novels,” asserted a reviewer in Publishers Weekly.

Standalone Novels

In 2005, Broday released a standalone novel called Redemption. Twelve years later, the volume was re-released under the title, Texas Redemption. It finds a soldier named Brodie returning home and reconnecting with his former flame, Laurel.

In an interview with Joyce Lamb, contributor to the Happy Ever After website, Broday explained: “I found inspiration for Texas Redemption in a romance-writing workshop. I can’t recall the speaker, but she talked about creating heroines and said that you can make any woman into a heroine if you provide the right motivation—even a prostitute. The wheels started turning in my head and I immediately saw Laurel James.” Broday continued: “Laurel didn’t choose that life but rather it was forced on her. Back then, publishers avoided the subject of prostitution and if a lady worked in a brothel the writer had to make her a maid, cook or she kept the books. The speaker of this workshop encouraged me to go all-out and put Laurel down in the trenches, make it real. So I did and Dorchester Publishing bought it.” Broday told a writer on the Harlequin Junkie website: “One of my favorite scenes is when Brodie finally goes home to visit his brother. War-torn and weary, he decides to make his last stand in the town of Redemption in far East Texas amid the swamps and tall cypress. Here it will end, one way or another. Hungry, he stops at the only café to eat and is startled to find Lavender Lil working as a waitress. She’s even more beautiful than he remembered. A few chapters after this, Brodie discovers she’s engaged to his brother and the pain almost kills him.”

A critic in Kirkus Reviews suggested: “Broday’s charming mix of Texas vernacular, history, and storytelling, along with her earnest characters who care about family above all, makes this an enjoyable if somewhat long romantic adventure.” “Though the subject is difficult, Broday gives it due gravity and the story a believable ending,” asserted Anne Black on the RT Book Reviews website.

I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical western romance. I’m a Texas girl through and through and reside in the panhandle. From an early age, I was lucky enough to discover wealth didn’t exactly pertain to money. Though my parents could barely afford the necessities, they managed to instill deep rooted values and a thirst for books. My favorite memories are the yearly road trips we made to California on Route 66 to visit grandparents. We’d stop at museums, trading posts, ghost towns and anything else that held our interest. I’m sure that’s where my love of history and the Old West was born.

I’ve been a “writer in training” my whole life. As young girls, my sister and I became obsessed with books. Many nights long after the house grew dark and everyone else was asleep, we’d lie beneath our covers and read by flashlight until we either reached the end of the book or our eyes got too heavy to see the words. Books opened up entirely new, exciting worlds that seemed limited only by our imaginations. I never imagined in a hundred years that I could create my own worlds. That undertaking seemed as far-fetched as scaling Mt. Everest. But write I did. It took me five years to finish that first novel and it will never be anything more than fire-starter material. With a small measure of confidence though, I wrote others that found their way onto an editor’s desk and then into bookstores.

Cowboys have always fascinated me so it’s no wonder that I love to write about them and their ladies and the struggles they endure in trying to carve out a small place to call home. It took some awfully tough men and women to settle this great country of ours.

I grew up watching TV westerns and hated that the cowboy always rode into the sunset all by his lonesome. I vowed to write stories that gave the cowboy someone to share his life with besides his trusty horse. I wanted him to marry that pretty woman he fell in love with, not leave her behind. That’s what I’ve endeavored to do and I think in that aspect I’ve succeeded. If I can capture one small portion of his grit and determination, that’s an added bonus. I want to show in my stories people who might’ve lived at one time. They’re ordinary, but they have more guts and more backbone than anyone.

Western romance is my passion. I feel truly blessed. Humble roots and the love of family have become focal points in my stories. I sincerely hope readers enjoy the characters and tales I strive to bring to life on the printed page.

    Spotlight&Giveaway

Hi Linda and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Texas Redemption!

I was very happy when Sourcebooks decided to reissue REDEMPTION, which was originally published in 2005. To get the book (retitled TEXAS REDEMPTION) back into readers’ hands was something I’d longed for.

This story takes place four years following the Civil War and is about Brodie Yates, a spy named Shenandoah. During the war, he meets a beautiful woman known only to him as Lavender Lil in a brothel and loses his heart. Separated by war and miles, he never keeps his vow to get back for her. At war’s end, the Union Army hunts him and he’s been on the run. His skill with a Colt that hangs from his hip is the only thing keeping him alive.

One of my favorite scenes is when Brodie finally goes home to visit his brother. A few chapters after this, Brodie discovers she’s engaged to his brother and the pain almost kills him. He’s unable to bear the thought of her married to a man she doesn’t love—even worse, his brother, where there is no escaping the constant deluge of memories and the truth that he wants her more than anything on earth.

Here is an excerpt of that scene:

Perhaps Shenandoah truly hadn’t recognized her. She’d worn her hair loose and flowing in those days, not pulled back in a severe knot on the back of her neck as she did now. She straightened her shoulders and strode into the dining room.
    Walk briskly. Feel nothing.
Shenandoah’s intense gaze burned, luring her concentration from the brisk, firm walk she’d planned. The faint smell of leather, bay rum, and cheroots jogged her senses.
Nights when her world seemed less hopeless.
Nights when she first dared thoughts of a new life.
Nights of passion. Her steps lagged.
The crooked half smile disturbed far more than the shock of hair that dangled rakishly across his forehead. Rivulets of sweat trickled down her back. That devilish grin touched a longing deep in the locked chamber of her heart where she could lie to herself and pretend she was worth saving.
Laurel willed herself forward, a desperate prayer sticking in her throat. She plunked the meal onto the table and turned on her heel.
    Not quick enough.
He captured her hand. “Much obliged. Sit with me a spell, Lil.”
Cold fingers of doom clawed their way inside, wrapping around what remained of her soul.
Lavender Lil. No one had called her that since…. She gave the other two patrons a skittish glance. Their forks never slowed from the plate to their mouth, indicating they’d not heard.
“Sorry, cowboy.” She meant to add the layer of flint. The bitterness surprised her though. “You’ve got the wrong person.”
Shenandoah pulled her into the chair beside him. Not a forceful tug, but one that offered no escape. The gentle touch spoke of remembrance and insatiable desire.
A crack in the floor came under her intense scrutiny.
How could so much dirt get into such tiny places? It would take a good scrubbing to get it clean.
“Nice try. I’d recognize that silky black hair, those violet eyes in the midst of a horde of saints at a church social, the last place I’d expect to find you…even if I wore a blindfold.”
His husky drawl lodged somewhere in the vicinity of her fickle heart. Dear God, for another lifetime, another chance. “You’re mistaken.”
“And certainly if you spoke.” He brushed aside her denial. “I’ve never heard another with your throaty voice.”
She swallowed the lump. “My name is Laurel James.”
Release of his hold gave false hope, for he merely changed locations. She flinched when he cupped her jaw. Damning the touch that bound without rope or chains, she had no choice but follow where he led. His rebel gaze reflected the futility of her lies. Her stomach knotted.
“Surprised to find you here. A bit far from St. Louis, aren’t you, darlin’?”
    “Please…don’t—”
A loud yell from outside interrupted her desperate plea.
“Hey, you in there! I’m calling you out.”
Jeb Prater. Shenandoah shifted in his seat. A glimmer of disquiet crossed his features before it vanished, replaced by the cold, hard mask of a seasoned warrior.
    * * *
Their secret pasts hold the power to destroy them and everyone else around.

    REDEMPTION

Desperate to escape her dark past, Laurel James agrees to wed the mayor of a small east Texas town. With him, life will be quiet. Respectable. Safe. It should be everything she ever wanted.

And it is. Until Shenandoah rides back into town.

Shenandoah never thought he would find the woman he’s loved and lost…and he certainly never dreamed she’d be pledged to his brother. He knows he should step aside-he has nothing to offer a woman like Laurel James-but the moment their eyes meet, Shenandoah is lost. He can only find peace in her arms…but can redemption be more than a dream for a man who has known nothing but war?

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Linda! Please tells us about Texas Redemption.

Linda: When Sourcebooks decided to reissue Redemption (2005) with a new title, I was beyond excited to put it in readers’ hands again. This post-Civil War, Reconstruction story is set amid the backdrop of East Texas’ swamps and bayous. Brodie Yates, still hunted as the rebel spy, Shenandoah, goes home to visit his brother in the town of Redemption. Hungry, he stops at a café to eat and comes face-to-face with a woman he’d known only as Lavender Lil. He’d met and fallen in love with her in a brothel during the war and vowed to go back for her. Except the war and the aftermath prevented it. She’s even more beautiful than he remembered but it stings to have her pretend not to know him.

Laurel James has only one thing in mind — gaining respectability and finding redemption for what she was forced to become. Being the wife of the town mayor will bring about both. Only one big problem — she’s still in love with the mayor’s brother, Brodie, and he gives her an ultimatum. Break off the engagement within three days or he’ll reveal her past as a scarlet lady.

She knows she should tell Brodie the truth — that she was abducted at 15 and recently escaped the brothel where she was taken, but the secret is too painful and raw. Before she can break off her engagement, her fiancé is shot during a bank robbery and lies near death. As Laurel and Brodie fight the deep love they can’t claim, a sinister man rides into town. Has he come to kidnap and take her back to the brothel? Spread the information and ruin her? Or will he give the army Brodie’s whereabouts? It’s anyone’s guess.

One brother offers the redemption she seeks. The other his heart. Will she survive long enough to choose?

Joyce: Would you like to share a favorite moment from your writing career?

Linda: There have been so many it’s difficult to pick just one, but I think it has to be at a book signing for the release of my first book — Knight on the Texas Plains. First, let me explain what that book is about. A drifter who has no reason to keep living sits down at a poker table and wins a baby that his opponent wagers as his bet after he runs out of money. A lady came to my autographing and told me that she, too, was won in a poker game. I stared at her in disbelief. I didn’t realize that such a thing still happens in this day and age. Knowing it did validated my story more than anything else could. We talked for a bit and she told me the circumstances which were almost exactly as in my story. That book will be reissued in August.

Joyce: Do you write by the seat of your pants (pantser), or do you carefully plot your stories (plotter)?

Linda: I’m a panster. I want the story to unfold as I go and have the spontaneity that it needs to develop. I love to find surprises that almost knock me from my chair. And I want my story to feel fresh and new each time I sit down to write or I have no passion for it. Early on before I was published, I tried to plot everything out, not only the book, but each scene. That killed my creativity. I just can’t do it, but I support those writers who do plot. Everyone is different and there is more than one “right” way to write a book. Each person should do whatever works for them.

Joyce: What inspires your book ideas?

Linda: Everything around me inspires. Ha! If I’m breathing, I’m finding inspiration. I find it when I run across some historical fact that grabs me. From a TV or movie I watch. Commercials. A piece of a song or poetry. In dreams. I especially find inspiration from things that happened in my past. There are pieces of me in every book. But I found inspiration for Texas Redemption in a romance-writing workshop. I can’t recall the speaker, but she talked about creating heroines and said that you can make any woman into a heroine if you provide the right motivation — even a prostitute. The wheels started turning in my head and I immediately saw Laurel James. Laurel didn’t choose that life but rather it was forced on her. Back then, publishers avoided the subject of prostitution and if a lady worked in a brothel the writer had to make her a maid, cook or she kept the books. The speaker of this workshop encouraged me to go all-out and put Laurel down in the trenches, make it real. So I did and Dorchester Publishing bought it.

    texas-redemption-linda-broday

Joyce: Is there anything interesting that’s happened while researching a book?

Linda: Several things happened while researching Texas Redemption. This is set near the actual town of Jefferson on the banks of Big Cypress Bayou. Jefferson plays an important part in the story. It was one of the most important shipping ports in Texas until 1872. So much history there. I stayed in an old haunted hotel, The Excelsior, and what an experience. Although I didn’t specifically encounter any ghosts, I did “feel” something. In the middle of the sultry August night, I awoke and the room was freezing. I snuggled under the covers and a few minutes later it was warm again. The next day I took a ride on a small paddleboat through the moss-covered cypress in the swamps. That was kinda creepy. I came away from East Texas with the perfect “feel” for the story. Walking the land where my books are set has always proven invaluable.

Joyce: Is there a TV show you’ve recently binge-watched?

Linda: Oh, my goodness, yes! Poldark on PBS. I missed the entire first season so I’ve been trying to catch up. The show that’s set in the 1700s in Cornwall, England, is a tale of romance, intrigue, danger and love. Ross Poldark, a man of means, is married to a common scullery maid named Demelza and he offers no apology for it. The flame-haired beauty wants nothing except to be loved. The show is full of historical content, beautiful costumes and breathtaking coastal scenery. And it doesn’t hurt one bit that Aiden Turner (Ross Poldark) is one drop-dead, gorgeous man!

Joyce: What are three romance novels on your TBR list?

Linda: A Thousand Yesteryears by Mae Clair, Luck is No Lady by Amy Sandas, Claim Me, Cowboy by Charlene Sands.

Joyce: What’s your favorite snack or beverage while you’re writing?

Linda: Oh goodness, I’m a bad, bad girl. I always keep something like cookies, candy or pretzels near along with cups of hot tea. I have a horrible sweet tooth and I keep telling myself that the sugar will fuel my brain and provide inspiration — also help me type faster. (Shhh, don’t tell. My doctor will have a cow.)

    Joyce: What’s coming next?

Linda: Next up is The Heart of a Texas Cowboy (book two of my Men of Legend series) on May 2. After suffering a devastating loss, Houston Legend is forced to marry in order to give Lara Boone’s baby a name. He considers this nothing more than a job so isn’t prepared to fall in love. This marriage-of-convenience story is sparked with danger and suspense as he drives a herd of cattle from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. He soon spots a group of riders following them, always staying the same distance back. Anyone who tries to take his cattle — or his wife — will have to face his guns.

Also — the reissue of Knight on the Texas Plains (No. 1 Texas Heroes series) comes out in August. A Christmas anthology in October and No. 3 Men of Legend (To Marry a Texas Outlaw) in November.

I’m currently finishing up the sequel to Knight on the Texas Plains and The Cowboy Who Came Calling (No. 2 Texas Heroes series).

    About Texas Redemption:

    Two brothers

    One woman

    A final chance to find…

He knows he should step aside—he has nothing to offer a woman like Laurel James—but the moment their eyes meet, Shenandoah is lost. He can only find peace in her arms…but can redemption be more than a dream for a man who has known nothing but war?

Broday's riveting third Texas Heroes historical romance (after The Cowboy Who Came Calling) pits a
young couple against frontier violence and long-held secrets at the turrrof the 20th century. Marley Rose
McClain discovers a badly beaten Roan Penny--victim of a hooded mob in neighboring San Saba County--
by the side of the road. The highly competent, artistic young woman nurtures him back to health using the
skills she learned from caring for the endless parade of her parents' foster children. Budding lovers Roan
and Marley embark on a complicated reconnaissance mission to learn the name of the leader of the
exceptionally youthful gang, and they also find a connection between the gang and the cattle rustlers
siphoning hundreds of cows from Marley's unpleasant father. The scheme brings Marley to the attention of
a creepy man named Will Gentry who fixates on her. The search for the gang and the effort to keep Gentry
from kidnapping Marley culminates in a series of perfectly executed shoot-out scenes and an entirely
satisfying happy ending. Fans of the previous books will enjoy returning to the McClain clan, and new
readers will appreciate the story's layered mysteries, emotional depth, and believable scenes of attraction.

Broday brings characteristic charm and expert storytelling to her second Texas Heroes historical romance.
Nineteen-year-old, trouser-wearing Glory Day has taken over providing for her mother and two younger
sisters since her father unjustly went to jail. After she accidentally shoots disgraced former Texas Ranger
Luke McClain, she takes him in and nurses him back to health. The two share an electric attraction, but
Glory's stubborn self-sufficiency and Luke's lingering affection for his brother's bride provide ample,
believable justification for their hesitation to get deeply involved. Then Glory's sight begins to fade after
she's kicked in the head by a mule, she has to cope with her delicate mother's increasingly unstable grip on
reality, and a lecherous banker suddenly calls in a loan on their land. Luke returns intermittently to her
family's farm as he hunts for those who falsely accused him of stage robberies. Broday heightens the
tension of these absences and creates some misdirection. In the last third of the book, the tone shifts to a
gun-slinging romp as Luke infiltrates a band of outlaws, while Glory tries to hide her blindness and spends
most days fretting and longing for the love she thinks she cannot have. With solid minor characters, exciting
plots, and sharp dialogue, this lovely romance is another home run by Broday. (Feb.)

On his way to even the score with the notorious Ned Sweeny, who framed him for murder, gunslinger Luke
Weston rescues a woman who's been kidnapped by two outlaws. He'd love to return her safely to her home,
but she remembers nothing, not even her name. As Luke continues his quest for Sweeny, he discovers
things about this gorgeous woman that make her even more mysterious. For instance, where did she learn
her expert marksmanship, and why is her language so salty? All Luke knows is that he admires her courage
and gumption, and every day on the trail, he's falling for her a little bit more. A gunslinger who's better than
he thinks he is; a lovely amnesiac; a young, wannabe gunslinger; an abused boy; a scruffy dog; and a
sadistic killer make the third book (following To Love a Texas Ranger, 2016, and The Heart of a Texas
Cowboy, 2017) in Broday s outstanding family saga, Men of Legend, an unforgettable journey through the
Old West. Fans of historical western romances by such authors as Jodi Thomas and Georgina Gentry will be

Broday's dramatic third Men of Legend romance (after The Heart of a Texas Cowboy) centers on Luke
Weston, a half-Spanish outlaw on the 19th-century Texas frontier. Luke, who has been falsely accused of
killing a federal judge, wants to clear his name, which means finding the real killer. But rescuing an
amnesiac woman from a posse of thugs complicates his search. As Josie Morgan tries to regain her memory
and they fall prey to their strong mutual attraction, the two travel all over seeking their answers. Luke's
insistence that he is unworthy of love and unable to settle down comes across as a sincere, as do his fierce
protection of the weak and powerful anger toward abusers. The pair encounter boastful bounty hunters and
an abused little boy, navigate Luke's strained relationship with his father and half-brothers, and use Josie's
impressive acting abilities and Luke's steely gunslinging to survive battles. This densely plotted historical
continues Broday's tradition of well-realized, emotionally rich novels. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot Fortune.

In Broday's strong first Texas Heroes historical romance, a marriage of necessity develops into genuine love
in 19th-century Texas. Duel McClain has little to live for until he wins a baby girl in a poker game. The
same night, a blooded, bruised, frantic' woman, Jessie Foltry, rushes into his camp and begs for help. Duel
pledges his protection and offers to take her back home to his family's ranch in Tranquility if she'll help
raise his unexpected daughter. Once settled, she admits to having killed her abusive husband. To help keep
her past a secret, Jessie and Duel stage a quickie marriage, but hiding her crime gets more complicated
when Duel's younger brother, Texas Ranger Luke, comes looking for the fugitive husband-killer. Broday
(the Men of Legend series) has a knack for capturing the hesitations of both Duel and Jessie and unfurling a
twisting plot without resorting to melodrama. Through carefully deployed flashbacks, she slowly exposes
the horrors of Jessie's marriage, culminating in a truly grisly image of depravity without overwhelming the
tender love story. Fans of historical romances will be pleased. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot Fortune. (Aug.)

In an East Texas town called Redemption, actual redemption doesn't come easy.Laurel James has finally
escaped her scandalous past to settle in the small town of Redemption, where she works in Ollie's Cafe and
is engaged to respectable Murphy Yates. Murphy doesn't know that during the Civil War, Laurel was
abducted from her family by a villain named Will Taft and sold into prostitution in St. Louis. Known there
as Lavender Lil, she did what she needed to in order to survive. Yet a Confederate spy named Shenandoah
promised dreams of rescue before he disappeared and left her heartbroken. Now, in 1869, the man she once
knew as Shenandoah has mysteriously reappeared. In fact, he is Murphy Yates' brother, Brodie, and he
holds the power to uncover Laurel's disreputable past. Brodie is opposed to the marriage, of course, but he
can't say whether it's because of Laurel's deceit about her identity or his own buried feelings for the woman
he left behind in St. Louis. He gives Laurel one week to break off the engagement to Murphy, with a veiled
threat to expose her. Before she can come up with a plan, Murphy is shot during a bank robbery and comes
dangerously close to death. Suddenly, both Brodie and Laurel feel a renewed loyalty to him, all the while
embarking on an escapade to seek outlaws and knowledge of their own hearts. Author Broday's charming
mix of Texas vernacular, history, and storytelling, along with her earnest characters who care about family
above all, makes this an enjoyable if somewhat long romantic adventure. The chemistry and attraction
between Laurel and Brodie feels authentic, and their love scenes are fun and sensual, though at times they
can get bogged down with cliched language. Great for fans of history, romance, and some good old Texas
grit.

Broday finishes her Bachelors of Battle Creek trilogy (after Twice a Texas Bride) with this sweet but
faltering story. In 1879, mustang wrangler Brett Liberty seeks solitude on the Texas plains, only to find the
heart of a feisty young woman. A chance meeting as they share a jail cell Is all it takes for sparks to ignite
between Brett and Rayna Harper. He falls for her gentle touch and fiery hair. She mostly likes the moccasins
he's promised that she'll inherit after he's hanged by a racist sheriff for the "crime" of being part Iroquois.
Thanks to a timely intervention, they're both freed and he's able to take her to Battle Creek, Tex., to start her
new life. But where Rayna goes, trouble usually follows. The story bounces back and forth between battles
and intimacy with impressive regularity, with a little bit of every imaginable western romance trope and
Native American stereotype thrown in for good measure. New readers may feel disconnected from some of
the characters, especially since many of them are only very briefly revisited. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot

When Rand Sinclair discovers a ragged woman and a little boy hiding in his barn, he figures they have a
secret. What he doesn't know is how big their secret is and how many more things they're keeping to
themselves. Most important, he doesn't know that this secret could get all of them killed. Broday has created
an honorable hero who has to learn to trust again; a sadistic villain and his evil, outlaw brothers; and a
beaten-down but brave heroine determined to keep those she loves alive, even if it means sacrificing herself
to do so. Broday's novel tugs at readers' heartstrings while keeping them on the edge of their seats in
suspense. Those who enjoy historical western romances by such authors as Kaki Warner and Maggie

Broday's first Bachelors of Battle Creek historical, set in 1878 Texas, is packed with TV western cliches.
Cooper Thorne and his two buddies formed a brotherhood bond during their childhood years at an
orphanage. Now someone's played Cooper for a fool and ordered him a bride. He quickly tells Delta
Dandridge it's all a mistake, but she's escaping her own past and refuses to return to it. After she lands a job
at the mercantile, she charms everyone in Battle Creek--including Cooper. The episodic story jolts from one
melodramatic scenario to the next: someone infects Cooper's cattle with a deadly disease, a man beats his
pregnant wife, and Cooper and Delta abruptly go from standoffish to smoochy. There's little real history
underpinning the story, and much of the sparse character development goes toward setting up Cooper's
brothers to be protagonists of future installments. (Jan.)

Roan Penny was born under a waning moon, which is supposed to be bad luck, and seeing how his life had gone, it seemed true enough. Roan thought his worries were over when Mose Mozeke offered him a place to live until some miscreants threaten Mose for his land. Then one night, Mose is killed. Roan is captured and left to die on a deserted road, but he is rescued by Marley Rose McClain, who was literally passing by. However, the McClains have problems of their own: rustlers have been stealing their cattle. It takes a while for Roan to get back on his feet, he is determined to avenge his friend as soon as he is able to. He has become attached to Marley and Marley, whose marriage prospects are very slim indeed, has become attached as well.

Roan and Marley are both very interesting characters. Marley writes children's books and wishes for them to be published, and Roan agrees. It was nice to see a hero taking a heroine seriously. Marley wrote her stories for one of the numerous abandoned children her parents have taken in, Matt, who is genuinely sweet, even for a reader who is not too fond of children in romances. At first, I felt TO CATCH A TEXAS STAR worked as a standalone, but it seems that Marley was featured as a child in a previous installment of the Texas Heroes series. I wonder if some parts of her backstory had been told in that book, because it was a lot to take in. Some of Marley's past was so over the top that the tone was one to which I'm not accustomed, and I had I known beforehand, I would not have chosen to read this book.

TO CATCH A TEXAS STAR is a book set in the Wild West, and very little was missing. There was so much happening, so many plot twists added one on top of the other that it became overwhelming and overshadowed what could have been a delightful romance. What was in fact a beautiful romance, but the villain acted like he belonged in an old silent movie -- only the train tracks were missing! -- and some turns of events were just a tad too convenient. There was no need, in my opinion, for so much complicated drama. A more streamlined story would have served our romantic couple better. There was no lack of chemistry between Roan and Marley. They were perfectly charming, and even though Roan had some trust issues, they were understandable and handled deftly.

Linda Broday creates vivid images of 1899 Texas. I loved reading about the first sewing machines, the phonograph, and modern contraptions, and everything that had to do with horses was riveting. Maybe TO CATCH A TEXAS STAR is a somewhat realistic view of how it was back then, but I would have preferred a quieter romance rather than cowboy shoot 'em ups.

Capturing the struggle to survive some of life’s most difficult challenges is one of Broday’s talents as she pulls fans into the hard-scrabble aftermath of triumph against all odds. The heroine’s journey through being kidnapped and forced into prostitution may be too much for gentle readers. Though the subject is difficult, Broday gives it due gravity and the story a believable ending.

Brodie Yates, a.k.a. Shenandoah, the famous Johnny-Reb spy, returns home in a desperate attempt to forget the horrors of war. What he finds is the one woman he has never forgotten, though the last time he knew her, she was the star of the Black Garter brothel. Now Laurel James is his brother’s intended bride, and frantic to find acceptance in the town. Sparks, old resentments and long-time enemies fire both Brodie and Laurel into forbidden passion. But even if they are perfect for each other, their pasts and the wreckage from them may be too much for the lovers to overcome. (SOURCEBOOKS, Feb., 448 pp., $7.99)

no humanity and his treatment of Jessie was the proof. Plain and simple. But nothing really is that simple. The laws of the land still held that murder was murder. And Jessie was guilty of shooting Jeremiah Foltry.

Jessie was on the run from what she had done to save herself and from her husband's band of miscreants when she happened on Duel McClain's camp. Neither Duel nor Jessie would ever fathom how that random event would ultimately change the course of both their lives. Or the baby Marley Rose's. Duel needed Jessie's help to get Marley Rose back to his family farm. Duel had basically won this baby. But in actuality Duel had a heart big as the outdoors. He wouldn't think of turning his back on anyone that needed his help. And candidly speaking there weren't any two people that needed Duel more than Jessie and Marley Rose.

KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS is about finding love and making peace with yourself. Linda Broday basically threw together a strange conglomeration of characters that somehow made sense. Broday constructed a very eclectic family that included a dog named Boobie and a goat name Cheeba. Even the animals got credit for contributing to this thrown together family group. If you missed this story first time around KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS is worth a look. Not sure if the second book in this series will also be reissued but I'm going to keep an eye out for it.

In The Cowboy Who Came Calling we have the second book in the Texas Heroes series. this book features a passionate and drama filled story that will definitely test your emotions and mood.

Our key players that take an active role are:

Glory Day, our heroine, who is starting to lose her vision and having to take charge of her family with her father sick and in jail.
Luke McClain, our hero, who is a ex Texas Ranger, he is on the hunt for a criminal that can clear his name.
Glory Day, is responsible for taking care of her family. With her father been arrested and sick in jail, her mother inconsolable, Glory is doing everything she can to take care of her mother and sisters. And soon their home is going to be foreclosed if they don’t come up with the funds. When Glory stumbles across a criminal with a high reward, she faces off with a mysterious cowoby who wants the same man for himself and he then gets shot in the crossfire.

At first these two aren’t a huge fan of each other, more on Glory’s side than on Luke. Despite the fact that Luke has been shot because of Glory, you would think that he would have more negative feelings toward Glory but he doesn’t. There is a strong attraction between them, but Glory is cynical and stubborn especially when it comes to the male species. I wouldn’t say I liked Glory at all. Her personality was a bit too rough for my liking. She is the first heroine from Linda Broday that I really struggled with in ways that I didn’t want to struggle but it kept happening, and she was way too stubborn for her own good.

I did however fall heavily for our hero, who is beyond honorable. Despite the way that Glory is so suspsicious of him and his actions, he tends to prove so kind and understanding and doesn’t judge her at all. I loved that about him, when he was way too nice for Glory in my opinion. I also admired how much he gives back to Glory and her family, in ways that he didn’t even need to but he did it because of his caring and affection for them and because he is a man of honor and I adored that.

There were many wonderful moments between these two, and I just loved the setting and the heroine dealing with being blind and the struggles that come along with that. The romance that built between these two was simply wonderful and once Glory overcame her stubborness and mistrust than their relationship really flourished and once that moment happens I didn’t want to put this one away. AN INTRIGUING ROMANTIC TALE IN THE AMERICAN WEST!!!

ta found herself watching it as if it was the most prized possession. Perhaps it was for a woman who had absolutely nothing and no one.

The last thing Delta really expected was to have any sort of relationship with Cooper -- who vehemently denied any part in the mail order business. But Cooper was enthralled with this sassy woman who stood up to him like no one else seemed to dare. Each confrontation actually increased his pride and if he was being honest with himself -- attraction to this newcomer.

Delta was becoming dear to many of the townspeople because of her kindness and honesty. Cooper's brothers were also getting close to this at times infuriating woman. This did not sit well with Cooper who could not understand these feelings. His plans did not include marriage. He was not marriage material. In his opinion his past did not make him a suitable mate for anyone much less a gracious intelligent woman like Delta.

But just as the town had already accepted Delta as one of their own -- Cooper was beginning to feel somewhat possessive. And when danger visited their little town Cooper realized all bets were off when it came to keeping Delta safe. He might not want to marry her -- but she was his all the same.

Don't you just love big strong rugged cowboys. Linda Broday and I obviously share a great fondness for them. TEXAS MAIL ORDER BRIDE is a great story about growth, pride, love and care. This is book one of the Bachelors of Battle Creek series. In TEXAS MAIL ORDER BRIDE we get to meet Cooper's brothers along with several other bachelors. Broday gave us just enough to whet our appetite to get to know these men a lot better. The men are hot and sexy and the women are sassy. All the ingredients for a fine new series.

"So beautiful. You make it impossible to think." He pulled her against him and found her mouth. "You don't know how long I've wanted to do this."

When he let her up for air, she whispered as though she couldn't trust her voice, "Is this another Texas custom?"

"Absolutely," he growled. "Welcome to Texas."

Rancher Cooper Thorne thinks his life is finally on an even keel-until Delta Dandridge steps off the stagecoach and claims she's his mail order bride. Brash and quick- witted, the meddling Southern Belle is everything Cooper thought he never wanted...and everything his heart is telling him he needs.

But Cooper swore long ago that he'd never marry, and he aims to keep his word, especially now that the demons from his past have returned to threaten everything-and everyone-he holds dear...

    Excerpt
Delta covered the space between them so quickly Bandit scurried for safer territory. She glared up into eyes that reminded her of a cold winter’s day. “I can’t believe this. You have a lot of gall, Mr. Thorne. The way I see it, you gave up your right to meddle in my affairs when you told me in no uncertain terms that you weren’t looking for a wife. Therefore, what I do is none of your concern. If I want to—”
“Do what?” Cooper brushed her cheek with a fingertip. “Women like you won’t throw your reputation to the wind. You want it all or nothing.”

She glared. “You’re awfully sure of yourself.”

“I know more than you think.” His words were soft. “I see the yearning for permanence in your eyes. Dear God, you’re a difficult woman to forget.”

Cooper tugged her against his lean body, lowered his head, and pressed his sensual lips firmly on hers. The long kiss held passion and promise and warmth. Delta’s breath got caught somewhere between the need for more and wishing she’d stayed in town, far away from men who indulged in contradictory behavior.

Her knees grew weak and she clutched the shirt covering his broad chest to keep from falling as the world tilted on its axis.

As the kiss deepened, their breaths mingled in a heated flurry while blood pounded in her ears. She heard a low moan and realized it came from her. Strange how it sounded so very far away.

Her stomach whirled and dipped as though she’d fallen from a great height. Tingles raced up her spine in some kind of mindless confusion. The anger that had propelled her into dangerous territory melted away and left a strange desire in its wake. Before she could unclench her hands from his shirt to take a step back, he released her.

The kiss ended suddenly, leaving her wanting more.

Cooper’s sinful half smile turned her knees to jelly. “And that, Miss Delta, is how we do things here in Texas.”

Delta Dandridge’s prospects are bleak at best. Her mother has died, and she has no means of support. Desperate, she answers an ad for a mail-order bride, and after receiving a few romantic letters, she leaves Atlanta for the tiny town of Battle Creek, Texas. Rancher Cooper Thorne, owner of the Long Odds Ranch, is being targeted by an unknown enemy who is deliberately exposing his healthy cattle to hoof-and-mouth disease. That’s bad enough. Now this woman shows up in town, claiming to be his fiancée. Cooper has plenty of problems without adding a woman to the equation. After all, he is the cofounder of the Battle Creek Bachelor’s Club, and he doesn’t intend to lose his membership. Readers will enjoy the witty banter, the colorful descriptions, the mystery of the villain’s identity, and, most of all, the obstinate hero and heroine. This entertaining war of the sexes seems mighty large in a town so small there’s only one of everything. Broday (Redemption, 2012) will appeal to fans of such authors as Georgina Gentry, Leigh Greenwood, and Jodi Thomas.

    Author(s): Linda Broday
Broday crafts a richly atmospheric Western complete with the grittiness of the frontier as well as the tenderness of blossoming love. With characters from her previous novel, a delightful young boy, an orphaned baby girl and a raggedy dog, Broday proves love and trust can make a family as much as blood can. With a touching and gentle, yet rugged and real story, Broday captures the West — and readers’ hearts.

Callie has every reason not to trust men, but Rand Sinclair might change her mind. Rand has just bought an abandoned ranch when he finds Callie, along with a young boy, in his bunkhouse. He has no idea the ranch was once her home, or that Toby is her nephew — and the outlaw Nate Fleming’s son. Callie’s vulnerability and wariness touch Rand. He is determined to prove to her that he’s one man she can trust, and when she needs his help, he’s there. He’ll marry her to help her keep Toby, save her from her enemies, even help her find her own daughter. Most of all, he’ll give her his heart, and it’s this unconditional love that frees Callie from fear and helps her open her heart to the love she deserves. (SOURCEBOOKS, May, 378 pp., $7.99)

FOREVER HIS TEXAS BRIDE by Linda Broday continues with her Bachelors of Battle Creek series. In FOREVER HIS TEXAS BRIDE we finally get Brett's story. Each of the bachelors has captured my heart and none more than this installment in what is an awesome reminder of Linda Broday's talent as an author of westerns. Broday's writing style is gritty and real just like the times and characters of each of her books. When you read FOREVER HIS TEXAS BRIDE you will once again be treated to some of the best dialog and scenery that totally fits the time and place. Linda Broday brings a sense of realism that is truly appreciated and enjoyed. FOREVER HIS TEXAS BRIDE may be the third in the series but it qualifies as a standalone story with little tidbits of the previous books to whet your appetite just in case you missed them.

Brett Liberty and Rayna Harper did not meet under the best of conditions -- and that's being blatantly honest. Meeting someone through the bars of a jail cell just doesn't qualify as a good omen. But through those bars Brett was actually able to "see" quite a lot of this young woman who was as outspoken as she was downtrodden. Brett was used to people stereotyping him as a half-breed. His Native American heritage was rather obvious in his appearance. As an owner of his own horse ranch, his life was more solitary and for the most part saved from this overt racism.

Rayna was a product of her upbringing that was just as caustic as Brett's youth had been until he was taken under the wing of a caring man. Brett and his three "brothers" were left an important legacy that helped them each develop into strong, good men.

But that wasn't what the sheriff had seen. The sheriff only knew that he hated this half-breed and wanted him dead. Rayna wanted Brett's boots. But Brett quickly realized that this young woman had a big heart and a spirit that wouldn't break. In many ways she reminded Brett of himself and his brothers. If there was a way to escape his captor he was taking Rayna with him.

Unfortunately, Brett and Rayna's pasts were doggedly following them. Both these fine young people just wanted to live in peace but there were those whose prejudices outweighed their sense.

FOREVER HIS TEXAS BRIDE is a story about deep-rooted prejudices. The story takes place in 1879 but certainly still resonates with meaning. Linda Broday writes about the Old West but her stories are current and relevant. The Bachelors of Battle Creek is a shining example of the talent of one of the best contemporary western authors.
