SIDELIGHTS

Mason Donovan has built a career predominantly within the business consulting industry. As the leader of the Dagoba Group, he and his company members strive to improve the environment of other businesses across the country. Their primary goal is to create more cohesive work environments. Prior to launching his formal career, Donovan attended the University of Mary Washington and Webster University, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively. He also appeared in commercials relating to the subject as a toddler. Donovan’s work reaches outside the business world as well. He has worked closely with the national government, having served as a delegate within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Donovan has written extensively on the subjects related to his field, and has released four books: Driven: A Manager’s Field Guide to Sales Team OptimizationThe Golden Apple: Redefining Work-Life Balance for a Diverse WorkforceSET for inclusion: An Underlying Methodology for Achieving Your Inclusion; and The Inclusion Dividend: Why Investing in Diversity & Inclusion Pays Off

The Inclusion Dividend

The Inclusion Dividend deals closely with the subject upon which Donovan has built his career. It is also a collaborative effort, written with Mark Kaplan. In the book, Donovan and Kaplan advocate for the creation of more diversified workplaces and talk about the means employers can utilize to make this happen within their own companies. After defining diversity from a corporate standpoint, the two explain workplace prejudices and the widespread ills it brings. Along the way, they discuss ways employers can eradicate prejudice in the form of group tasks and talks, and narrate anecdotes relating to the subject. Donovan and Kaplan draw heavily from scientific research throughout the book, using psychological and sociological data to present their argument of how prejudiced hiring practices hurt the workplace. They ultimately assert that such prejudices set up a harmful frame of mind not just for the employer, but for the rest of their company.

Donovan and Kaplan conclude the book with a discussion on how employers can nip this sort of behavior in the bud. They list several solutions for this problem in detail, using related narratives to further illustrate their stance. In an issue of Publishers Weekly, one writer remarked that “It’s rare to find a business book that so soundly hits the zeitgeist.”

The Golden Apple

The Golden Apple came to Donovan after an extensive period of cultivating unhealthy working habits. Eventually, Donovan came to the conclusion that his life and work balance needed to be modified, and it is these modifications that form the basis of the book. The titular “golden apple” becomes part of a metaphor for Donovan, which he utilizes as part of a spectrum. On the other end of the spectrum lies a pair of handcuffs—restricting and unhealthy. In contrast, the golden apple is nutritious and far more beneficial. Donovan encourages readers to put away their handcuffs and strive to reach and nurture their own golden apple by evaluating their life and work balance closely. Doing so will allow readers to make better use of their working time, while also allowing themselves more time to enjoy their personal lives.

Donovan addresses this need for balance at every level of business management, while also delving into the need for healthier business practices in other areas. Along the way, Donovan explains the various ways employees can check on their life and work balance as well as improve it. Donovan also works in a discussion on workplace diversity, asserting that his philosophy of the golden apple can and should be applied to workers of all backgrounds. “The writing is quick, crisp, and snappy,” commented one Publishers Weekly contributor.

  • Donovan Digital Solutions - http://www.donovandigitalsolutions.com/about

Mason grew up in the advertising and marketing world. Starting in commercials at two years old, his family continues to own one of the most successful traditional advertising agencies in Atlanta. But with the transition of traditional media into the world of digital he learned by doing. He is a child of the digital age, with a strong background and understanding of how traditional media drives people to digital. That is a powerful combination in today's advertising and marketing dynamic, one that changes daily. Mason stays on top of the constant changes like no one else in the industry.

After feeling overworked for many years, Donovan {Driven), a managing partner at the consulting firm Dagoba Group, decided on a change--and
the results are captured in this enthusiastic but familiar guide to achieving work-life balance. The titular golden apple is Donovan's alternative to
the "golden handcuffs" metaphor: unlike handcuffs, apples are wholesome and tasty. Donovan encourages readers to dig deep into methods of
keeping work and home from bleeding into each other, both to increase job satisfaction for its own sake and to ensure that productivity doesn't
suffer. He covers how leaders can model behavior for employees, such as by eliminating time-wasting activities. Donovan also discusses his

decades of experience helping companies become more diverse and inclusive, while noting that work-life balance impacts everyone, "across
generations, genders, and geographies." There's precious little else here that addresses diversity, and as a result the subtitle feels like a misleading
afterthought. The writing is quick, crisp, and snappy, but Donovan's take on work-life balance is not distinct enough from the many other books
published on the subject for this effort to stand out. (Sept.)

Diversity, like corporate social responsibility, is one of those buzz concepts that managers love to promote, despite not knowing how it fits into a
company's strategic vision. Here, consultants Kaplan and Donovan (DRIVEN: A Field Manager's Guide to Sales Team Optimization) provide a
textbook approach to the "diversity and inclusion" (D&I) topic, down to key takeaways and discussion exercises. The book opens by making the
business case for inclusion, moves onto the psychological underpinning of bias and its effects on business, and finishes with two practical
chapters on "change strategies." Real world examples, like the fact that Facebook only recently added a female executive to its board or H&M's
misguided use of "all blond mannequins in its Thirty-Fourth Street store and all brunettes in its Harlem store," enrich the argument. Less
convincing are fictionalized anecdotes and examples--Kim, a typical senior manager, or Sarah, a generalized first female engineer with a civil
engineering firm. Similarly, the discussion exercises feel contrived and are too brief to expose the complexity of the issues. Despite these
quibbles, it's rare to find a business book that so soundly hits the zeitgeist while also capably applying the best social sciences research to an
important topic. (May)
