SIDELIGHTS

Jeannie Burt is a writer based in the Pacific Northwest. She has written works of nonfiction and works of fiction.

What You Need to Know to Show Your Dog and Lymphedema

In 1989, Burt released her first book, What You Need to Know to Show Your Dog. In this volume, she discusses the desired traits that judges look for in show dogs. The volume is divided into sections on over one hundred dog breeds. Other topics in the book include how to choose a show dog and how to care for show dogs.

Burt collaborated with Gwen White to write the 1999 book, Lymphedema: A Breast Cancer Patient’s Guide to Prevention and Healing. This volume focuses on the titular medical condition, which occurs often in women dealing with breast cancer. In certain cases, surgery on the breast will cause swelling and fluid accumulation, known as lymphedema. Lymphedema affects a person’s chest area and arm(s). It can make moving difficult and uncomfortable. In the book, Burt and White discuss how best to treat lymphedema, how to spot it, and how to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Barbara Reddien Wagner offered a favorable assessment of the volume in Physical Therapy. Wagner commented: “It appears to offer its audience an abundance of information … in a single source. It is designed to complement medical management, including physical therapy and occupational therapy. One of its greatest values is that it offers many options to women by educating them in a holistic manner.” Writing in Library Journal, Bette-Lee Fox described Lymphedema as “an informative lime book that should help all women suffering from the condition, at least to some degree.”

When Patty Went Away

When Patty Went Away is Burt’s first novel. It is set during the 1970s in rural Oregon. Among its protagonists is the titular character, Patty, a teenager whose rebelliousness gets her into trouble in her small farming community.

Nearly all of the residents of Patty’s town blame her for a tragic event, after which Patty goes missing. The only townspeople on Patty’s side are Patty’s best friend and the friend’s father, Jack McIntyre. Jack’s wife is even among the people with a negative opinion of Patty. Jack cannot stop himself from worrying about Patty and ultimately determines to find her. His choice puts him at odds with his wife and the rest of the townspeople. Jack’s mission causes dramatic changes that affect him and those around him.

The Seasons of Doubt

Set in the late-1800s in Nebraska, The Seasons of Doubt, another novel by Black, tells the story of a struggling single mother named Mary Harrington. At the beginning of the book, Mary is married to a man who abuses her. Her husband finally leaves her. Mary is relieved to be free of the abuse, but now she has no source of income to provide for herself and her son. The state of Nebraska requires that a married woman’s spouse approve if she is to work for money or sell her property. Therefore, Mary is forced to barter her time in exchange for food and a place to live. Mary’s boss is unkind to her, but she is fared to challenge her treatment because she desperately needs the work. Finally, the authorities declare her husband legally dead, but her new status as a single woman does not change her treatment at work. Over time, Mary becomes increasingly determined to find a way to give her son a good life. She finally devises a plan that will help them get ahead.

Jeanne Greene, critic in Booklist, presented a favorable assessment of The Seasons of Doubt. Greene asserted: “Readers will understand Mary’s disadvantages and appreciate the courage that sustains her while facing … hardships.”

Jeannie Burt was raised on a farm in Oregon. There were six, counting her, in her high school graduating class. She was related to half of them, a situation that fostered neither romance, nor privacy or adventure, but it did tend to keep her in line.

After college, she lived in San Francisco, New York and Milano where she became passionate about art. She adores Paris and visits often. She now lives in the Pacific northwest.

Through the years, Jeannie always wrote–jotted mostly. But jotting eventually turned to “real” writing and her writing has been published for a long time.

First came two non-fiction titles, “What You Need to Know to Show Your dog” and “Lymphedema”. But her real passion lay in fiction, reading, talking, escaping in, and eventually writing fiction. Her first novel, “When Patty Went Away”, was published February 2013. An historical novel, “The Seasons of Doubt” is scheduled to publish April 2018.

Lymphedema: A Breast Cancer Patient's Guide to Prevention and Healing Burt J, White G. Alameda, CA 94501, Hunter House Inc, 1999, paperback, 224 pp, illus, ISBN: 0-89793-264-1, $12.95.

This book is organized to present very thorough and practical information on the full scope of lymphedema management. The authors are Jeannie Burt, who used to have lymphedema, and Gwen White, a physical therapist with 25 years of clinical experience who now specializes in the management of lymphedema. Their accomplishment is that they have written a book focused on patient education and empowerment while compiling a wide range of information and expertise that offers an excellent resource to clinicians.

The text is divided into 4 parts: (1) "Lymphedema: What It Is and How to Prevent It," (2) "Treating Lymphedema," (3) "Beyond Conventional Treatments," and (4) "Finding Resources." Personal stories of experiences with lymphedema located throughout the book reinforce the content.

The chapters in part 1 describe (including photos and diagrams) lymphedema and its types, illuminate the relationship of comprehensive breast cancer management to lymphedema, and provide a brief and thorough review of anatomy and a functional review of the lymphatic system. Details of signs and incidence of the condition and the history of lymphedema management lead into a comprehensive listing of tips for prevention with a thorough rationale supporting each tip. These tips indicate that life-long adherence is required, and the authors encourage readers "to live even if you do have lymphedema."

Part 2 discusses the general principles of treatment, focusing on massage, bandaging, exercise, and skin care. The procedure of manual lymph drainage (MLD) is described, and the precautions and contraindications are explicitly identified. Massage is suggested as a continuation of the physical therapy program, and descriptions and diagrams for self-massage and partner massage are provided. Scar tissue massage techniques are included as part of holistic management. Part 2 also includes chapters on the rationale and technique of compressive bandaging, the use of compression with special garments, and the use of vasopneumatic pumps. The exercise portion of part 2 begins with breathing and postural activities, followed by a "how-to" chapter that identifies exercises to treat lymphedema, such as lymph drainage exercises, stretching and flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises, and aerobic exercise. Adherence to the exercise regime is supported by the rationale and goals for each exercise component, and the contraindications for exercise are discussed. Readers are advised to seek medical advice prior to initiating exercise and if they experience any problems.

Part 3 broadly discusses emotions and the powers of the mind and spirit, and it briefly presents information on nutritional supplements. Part 4 includes finding resources and where to get help, suggestions on questions to ask while seeking treatment, and a comprehensive glossary.

This book includes current trends in comprehensive lymphedema management. It appears to offer its audience an abundance of information--the significance, care, prevention, and understanding of this complication--in a single source. It is designed to complement medical management, including physical therapy and occupational therapy. One of its greatest values is that it offers many options to women by educating them in a holistic manner.

The Seasons of Doubt.
By Jeannie Burt.

"Women's rights" is an oxymoron in 1873 Nebraska, where a married woman cannot work for wages or sell
her own property without spousal approval. When young Mary Harrington is abandoned by her abusive
husband, she is forced to work in exchange for meals and shelter for her young son. Mary seldom speaks up
for herself for fear of losing the work, even though, after her husband is declared dead, her wages are lower
than her subordinates'. But Mary has a stubborn core, and when she decides to give her son a better life than
hers, in spite of his objections, she finds a risk-free way to do it. The Dickensian setting for Seasons of
Doubt is a small community of people of mostly meager means. They have scant sympathy for Mary when
she is cheated, exploited, or treated unfairly, and, sadly, she expects none. Her story is sometimes
depressing, but readers will understand Mary's disadvantages and appreciate the courage that sustains her
while facing a series of hardships alone.--Jeanne Greene

Lymphedema is a swelling caused by an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in tissues and is common among
women who have undergone breast cancer surgery with axillary node dissection and/or radiation. Yet prior
to surgery, most women are unaware of this condition and the heartache it can bring. Burt, a human
resources consultant and breast cancer patient who has been affected by lymphedema, and White, a physical
therapist, have put together an informative lime book that should help all women suffering from the
condition, at least to some degree. In the past, many women were told they would have to live with the
swollen arm and lack of mobility that appeared after their surgery. Burt and White present treatment plans,
massage therapies (professional and self-administered), and exercise regimens to alleviate or diminish this
surgical aftermath. Though the authors advise vigilance to keep the skin and affected arm as healthy as
possible, unfortunately, lymphedema can strike many years after surgery. Their useful guide will help
women remain active and, one hopes, less obsessed with the "other" results of breast cancer. Recommended
for patient health collections.
