SIDELIGHTS

Canadian writer Helena Hunting is the author of contemporary erotic romances, both stand-alone novels and series. She debuted with the “Clipped Wings” series which was launched with the novel of the same name. Hayden and Tenley are a pair of young lovers afraid to commit because of secrets from their past. An online Bookswoon contributor noted, “Intense, Emotional, Dark, and Erotic . A love story between two very damaged souls.” The reviewer added: “Clipped Wings delivers an emotionally, gut wrenching story and the beginning of an romance between two very different, damaged people. I would recommend this to adult readers who enjoy the New Adult genre, and are looking for a sexy, emotionally darker, and edgier read.” The series continues with Inked Armor, which continues the story of tattooist Hayden and his lover, Tenley. “Hunting’s sequel to Clipped Wings is a dark, intense, emotionally charged story of two tormented characters who can’t believe they deserve love,” noted a Publishers Weekly contributor of this installment. The contributor added: “[A] look into the world of tattoos and piercings, a dash of humor, and a feel-good ending will delight fans and new readers alike.”

Hunting is also the author of the “Pucked” series, romantic novels with a hockey setting. Each of the titles in the series involves a love affair between a strong woman and a male hockey player with a strong dose of sexuality. “If you enjoy witty banter, laugh out loud humour, strong sexy heroes, sweet awkward heroines, minimal angst, plenty of MC and a grovel that requires extreme effort, you need to get Pucked,” commented a Scandalicious website reviewer of the series opener.

Shacking Up

Among Hunting’s stand-alone novels is the 2017 Shacking Up, featuring would-be actress Ruby Scott who is desperate to get a break and launch her acting career in New York. A big audition is coming up but the night before, at a party, a man mistakes her for someone else, kisses her and then coughs on her accidentally. Sick for her audition because of this, Ruby bombs and now a pet-sitting gig is the only thing that keeps her from eviction. But arriving at the job, she discovers her employer, who is headed for London, is real estate mogul Bancroft Mills and the man who mistakenly kissed her and cost her an acting job. Not the best way to meet, but the two tease and flirt across the Atlantic until Bancroft comes back to town.

Shacking Up plays with the reader’s patience as Hunting keeps her lovers an ocean apart for a good part of the novel,” noted Xpress Reviews contributor John Rodzvilla, who further commented, “Yet when the two reunite, the sparks fly.” A writer in Aestas Book Blog also had praise, noting: “I read this sexy, light-hearted romance in one sitting and it kept me laughing, swooning, and chuckling the whole way through! The writing was witty and addictive, the characters were compelling and endearing, the romance was hot, and the whole book was a joy to read!”

Hooking Up

Hunting again offers a sexy romantic comedy with Hooking Up, in which an unlikely couple does–as the title suggests–hook up. Amalie Whitfield is mortified at her wedding to overhear the love-making of her new husband and a wedding guest. She is desperate for revenge and hits on Lex, the first good-looking man she sees. Her embarrassment is deepened, however, when Lex rejects her offer, unwilling to be used for her revenge. Now Amalie needs to get out of town, going on her honeymoon on her own to a remote Pacific island. But en route who should she meet, but the handsome stranger from her wedding who is also headed to the island for work. Once there, Lex is less resistant to Amalie’s charms.

A contributor in the online Aestas Book Blog had high praise for this sequel, commenting: “This romantic comedy was well balanced between funny antics, awkward mishaps, super sexy hotness, and a fair bit of angst! The hero was ultra swoony and he swooped into the heroine’s life when her wedding turns to complete disaster, stood by her side when her world fell apart, and showed her what it was like to be loved the way she deserved. If you’re looking for a hot, light-hearted romance to read, this is definitely a book to check out!” A Harlequin Junkie website writer was also impressed with Hooking Up, calling it “hot, sexy, and fun.” The writer added, “Helena Hunting provides heat, humor, banter, rivalries, and family drama.” Similarly, on online Daily Waffle reviewer felt the novel is “hot, hilarious fun, that leaves you happy with where things end up,” while a Dirty Girl Romance website writer concluded: “The romance was fantastic! I loved Amalie and Lex together. I loved their chemistry, in and out of bed. I loved their banter and watching them fall hard for each other.”

I Flipping Love You and The Good Luck Charm

Long Island realtor Rian Sutter and Manhattan lawyer Pierce Whitfield meet under less than happy circumstances in I Flipping Love You, with Pierce accusing Rian of a parking lot hut and run. Animosity soon turns to romance, but Rian is determined to keep things light so she can concentrate on flipping houses in order to buy her grandmother’s home. A Publishers Weekly reviewer had a mixed assessment of this stand-alone, noting: “This light story relies heavily on the tropes of an antagonistic relationship, but there is little emotional structure built on that foundation.” The reviewer further commented,  “There are hints of potential, but the end result is disappointing.” Others found more to like. An online Book Binge writer observed: “The book was fabulous. Great characters, a charming beachfront romance that will make you laugh, happy sigh and just enjoy the heck out of Helena Hunting’s written word. It would be a great summer read.”

With The Good Luck Charm, the author “sparkles in … a well-plotted contemporary about a struggling and superstitious hockey player, his devastated ex-lover, and the hope and joy of second chances,” according to a Publishers Weekly reviewer. Ethan Kase is a NHL player whose father has a stroke. He heads home to Forest Lake, Minnesota, to try and take care of him, but Ethan also faces a missed opportunity back home, his sweetheart Lilah who he left a number of years before to pursue his professional hockey career. Now, realizing his mistake, he tries to win her back, but she is cautious, especially so as she begins to think Ethan sees her as his good luck charm. An online Harlequin Junkie contributor also had praise for this novel, commenting: “The Good Luck Charm is an absolute delight. Helena Hunting delivered banter, heat, humor, and family as Ethan tries to earn back the one thing he needs. Ms. Hunting crafted an entertaining and sexy story with a relatable cast of characters.”

Hunting (Getting Down) sparkles in this well-plotted contemporary about a struggling and superstitious hockey player, his devastated ex-lover, and the hope and joy of second chances. Just after NHL player Ethan Kase is traded from Chicago to his home state of Minnesota, his cantankerous father has a stroke--and Ethan comes face-to-face with his biggest regret: Delilah Jane, the childhood sweetheart he abandoned eight years earlier. Now a nurse in their hometown of Forest Lake, Lilah sees Ethan's father being admitted to the hospital and knows that Ethan's arrival won't be far behind. Ethan knows that breaking up with Lilah was the biggest mistake he ever made, but he begins trying to woo her back. But having been abandoned first by her father and then by Ethan, Lilah's not sure she wants to try again--especially when she finds out Ethan may just see her as a good luck charm. Hunting imbues her characters, especially Lilah, with quick wit and enjoyable depth, and the curveball she throws into the plot at the end is truly surprising, yet believable. Lively supporting characters, including Lilah's sassy sister, Carmen, add fun to the mix. Readers will hope for a return to Forest Lake. Agent: Kimberly Brower, Brower Literary & Management. (Aug.)

Hunting (Shacking Up) falters with this standalone contemporary. When Manhattan lawyer Pierce Whitfield mistakenly accuses Long Island realtor Rian Sutter of a parking lot hit-and-run, they are both surprised by the immediate attraction between them. Rian is determined not to let Pierce's relentless pursuit distract her from making enough profit flipping houses in their Hamptons neighborhood to buy her grandmother's old home. Their summer fling intensifies, but deliberate and accidental secret-keeping threaten the burgeoning relationship. This light story relies heavily on the tropes of an antagonistic relationship, but there is little emotional structure built on that foundation. Secondary characters such as Rian's twin, Marley, and Pierce's siblings, Amalie and Lawson, are interesting on introduction but quickly forgotten, and faux conflicts around other possible love interests are little more than cliche. Pierce and Rian have backstories that link up in intriguing ways, although key revelations come frustratingly late for the reader. There are hints of potential, but the end result is disappointing. Hunting's sequel to Clipped Wings is a dark, intense, emotionally charged story of two tormented characters who can't believe they deserve love. Tattooist Hayden Stryker hasn't heard from his lover, Tenley Page, in three weeks. He begins to fall apart as he did seven years ago after his parent's brutal murder. When Tenley reappears, she knows she owes Hayden an explanation, but his fear of her leaving again makes it hard for her to freely reveal her secrets. Fortunately, their intense, addictive emotional and sexual attachment, and their similar misery from guilt, allow them to understand and help each other and gives them hope of a future together. Hunting makes it easy for newcomers to dig into Tenley and Hayden's story, which comfortably stands alone. Sensitivity to serious issues, adoring lovemaking, a look into the world of tattoos and piercings, a dash of humor, and a feel-good ending will delight fans and new readers alike. (May)

Ruby Scott has a dream: she wants to make it on Broadway. Or maybe Off-Broadway. Even Off-Off-Broadway would be fine. In fact, any play will do that would pay the rent, allow her to stay in New York, and prove to her father that she can make it on her own and not go back to work at his pharmaceutical firm. Bancroft Mills is part of a real estate dynasty and in the haze of cold medicine and alcohol accidentally kisses and coughs on the wrong girl, one Ruby Scott. When he finds out that his mistaken kiss cost Ruby her big shot, he offers her a job as a live-in pet-sitter for his ferret and tarantula while he takes care of a project in London. Ruby and Bancroft flirt for weeks across the Atlantic, but when he comes home, the fireworks really start. In this new romance, Hunting, author of the "Pucked" series (Pucked; Pucked Up), replaces her hockey player with a retired rugby player, but Ruby embodies the sass and independence her readers have come to expect.

This is my 99th review for the blog and it’s kind of ironic that it’s a hockey book. I’ve never been a huge hockey fanatic, football has always been my number one love, and being Canadian I’m probably in the minority but with the playoffs currently underway and my team still in the hunt I’m willing to cheer loud and proud (especially after their overtime win last night, sorrynotsorry Ducks)! The Edmonton Oilers have always been the arch nemesis to my Calgary Flames and Wayne Gretzky brought a lot of misery to my hometown during my youth. #99 was The Great One and coincidentally, so is my 99th review… PUCKED by Helena Hunting.
Aside from that eye catching cover and the theme of the story, the title and it’s clever play on words completely grabbed me. I’m so pucked, that was pucking incredible, I could go on but let’s suffice to say I was entirely amused and this story absolutely played into my sense of humour. A few chapters in I was positive this was a five star read and long before I was finished the book, I knew that PUCKED would hold a coveted spot on my best of 2015 list. I loved this book! It’s one of those books I didn’t want to end and has me singing its praises to anyone and everyone, encouraging them to read it. Helena Hunting took a vivacious awkward heroine, a charming god-like hockey player, and created a laugh out loud, sweet, sexy love story.
Violet Hall is a fantastic heroine. I have zero complaints about either of the main characters but it’s her sharp wit, complete lack of filter, awkwardness and non-stop nervous rambling that bring about most of the comedic moments. Violet is a completely endearing character, whether playing Xbox and trading insults with her NHL man-whore of a step-brother, who you can clearly see adore each other in that love/hate brother sister kind of way, to her collection of Victoria’s Secret bras and Marvel comic boxer briefs. She has got a lingo all unto her own and The Beave, her words, not mine, is its own entity. She is the complete package, smart, sexy without trying and doesn’t take herself too seriously. As Violet has a front row seat to her step-brother’s revolving door of one-night stands with the scantily clad rink bimbos trying to land themselves a hockey husband, she has zero respect for the puck bunnies and even less for the players themselves. All that changes when Alex Waters charms her with his cute Canadianisms, his big brain and his monster cock (MC), again, her words, not mine.
There’d better be a support group for hockey hookers. I’m going to need it after tonight.
Alex Waters is captain of not only Violet’s hometown team, but the team her step-brother was recently traded to. Puck bunnies may be fair game to anyone in the locker room but messing with a teammates sister is guaranteed to bring the pain. Alex and Violet’s attraction is instantaneous from the moment Alex is checked into the boards and their eyes meet through the Plexiglas. Hockey players with bad-boy reputations do not interest Violet but all that hotness quoting Tolstoy and touching her… she’s a goner. Alex has a lot more going on for him than just the MC in his pants. God Lord, he knows how to use the MC, but he’s also sweet, chivalrous and knows how to woo. For as confident as Alex is on the ice, his vulnerability shows through at times and these two are a perfect nerdy match. Alex isn’t overbearing in the typical alpha-type way, throwing testosterone around and beating on his chest. He has a temper and it usually flares when he’s in a competitive state, jealous or protective but he’s a genuinely nice guy. For the most part, he’s amused by Violet and her antics (unless she trying to cut off the circulation to MC) and never tries to change her or tone her down.
“God you’re sexy,” he says, carrying me to the expensive-looking leather sofa. I have to wonder if he actually heard my ramblings about my waxing malfunction and my plastic penis collection.
Does he screw up? Of course he does! He’s quick on the realization but slow to react and neither of those work to his advantage when it comes to Violet’s firm and unwavering decision. If you enjoy witty banter, laugh out loud humour, strong sexy heroes, sweet awkward heroines, minimal angst, plenty of MC and a grovel that requires extreme effort, you need to get PUCKED.
“I still get to drive your car.”
“If you’re good with stick, sure.”
    “I’m great with stick.”
“I’m not talking about the one in my pants.”

Woohoooo!!! This romantic comedy was well balanced between funny antics, awkward mishaps, super sexy hotness, and a fair bit of angst! The hero was ultra swoony and he swooped into the heroine’s life when her wedding turns to complete disaster, stood by her side when her world fell apart, and showed her what it was like to be loved the way she deserved. If you’re looking for a hot, light-hearted romance to read, this is definitely a book to check out!
Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw.
Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him.
They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical…
Not gonna lie, my heart really went out to Lexington. This poor guy had been moments away from wooing Amalie off her feet when a twist of fate had her leaving the party with his outwardly-charming, but inwardly-slimy cousin and nemisis Armstrong. After years of bad blood between them, he wasn’t looking for another fight and just figured she’d be the one who got away. But years later, after her hours-old marriage to Armstrong ended in pure disaster, they accidentally crossed paths once again. She was just as alluring to him as she’d been the night he’d first met her but he wasn’t about to take advantage of her situation. So he did the one thing he could — he helped her get away.
His voice is in my ear, deep, mollifying. “Come on, sweetheart, you gotta let go now.”
He’s right, but I’m so embarrassed. Not only has my husband humiliated me in front of everyone we know, and about three hundred people I don’t, I’ve thrown myself at Lex and eh turned me down, and now I’ve cried all over him. This is the worst night of my entire life…
He strokes my hair again, then gently unhooks my legs from his waist. “It’s okay, baby, I get it. I know I’m irresistible.” My laugh comes out as a sob. His lips touch my cheek. “No was the very last thing I wanted to say to you.”
But to both of their amazement, they ended up on the same island together after the wedding fiasco and, away from all the drama and judgment of their situation, they were finally able to give in to the attraction they’d felt on the night they first met.
After her world fell apart, he held her together. I loved how much he respected her and how kindly he cared for her… all the while giving her a glimpse into what her life might have been like if she’d have chosen to take him up on his drink offer before meeting Armstrong.
His thumb traces my bottom lip. It’s the gentlest, barely there touch. I almost think I imagine it. “Don’t do that.”
    “Do what?”
“Let him make you feel like you’re anything less than perfect. He has no idea what he’s given up. That he had you at all is a travesty. He doesn’t deserve any part of you, least of all your heart.” He searches my face, eyes warm and honest.
And speaking of that royal asshole. This guy. Armstrong. He was the dick of all dicks. You might want to read this book with some alcohol on hand because he was downright infuriating!! That’s not even strong enough a statement. The good news is that, once she found out what a lowlife he was, Amie stood up to him strongly — and even threw in a well aimed dick punch or two. But still. GRRRRRR.
“We have a couple of options.”
“Whatever is easiest and quickest. I want this over with as soon as possible.”
    “Divorce could be quick.”
I flinch — divorce is such an ugly word in our world. “He cheated on me less than twelve hours into our marriage. It hasn’t and won’t ever be consummated.”
He clears his throat and taps his pen on the table. “Right. Okay. So we’ll proceed with the annulment, which is option two. We’ll cite it as fraudulent, since he entered the marriage without the intention of upholding fidelity.”
I snort. “That’s a nice way of putting it. Is there an option three?”
“Hire a hitman and dump the body in the river, but there’s a lot of loose ends there and it’s sort of a legal nightmare.”
I smile at his horrible attempt at legal humor.
“Let’s go with option two, shall we?”
I will say that I totally do blame her for getting herself into that whole situation in the first place and I have no idea how she could have lasted even one date with him to begin with given the way he behaved. And I did find it annoying the way she kept second guessing everything that was happening between her and Lex but I guess she just wasn’t the best judge of men it seems. And hey… not my circus, not my monkeys. I was just happy that she fought back against Armstrong and did eventually come around to understanding that Lex was completely different.
“Tell me you don’t feel this pull.”
Her gaze stays fixed on my chest. “I can’t.”
“You can’t tell me or you can’t feel it.” … I lift her chin up, forcing her to meet my gaze. “If Armstrong wasn’t in the way, what would you want?”
She tips her cheek into my palm.
“You know what I’d want?” I step closer, until our bodies are almost touching. “You. Not just for a couple of stolen weeks.”
“I don’t trust my feelings right now.”
“That’s okay. Just trust mine.” I close the distance and kiss her.
Lex really was just the perfect book hero. Sexy, swoony, caring, thoughtful, considerate. He was even scarred and had a bit of a bad boy past. Like really, he just checked all the boxes so I promise he’ll make your heart melt!
And oh myyyyy is this book ever hot!!! For anyone looking for a super steamy read, this one is sure to satisfy!
This book can be read as a complete standalone. Technically, it’s slightly interconnected with Shacking Up because the heroes are brothers but honestly, you do not need to read either one with, before, or after the other unless you want. I did however enjoy both of them as fun light-hearted romantic comedies though. And if you’ve already read and loved Shacking Up, then you’re sure to love this book too!

“I feel like I should know your name already.”
… “Well you’ve had your tongue in my mouth.” Not really the best words, or the most appropriate ones, unfortunately.

WHAT A FUN BOOK!! I read this sexy, light-hearted romance in one sitting and it kept me laughing, swooning, and chuckling the whole way through! The writing was witty and addictive, the characters were compelling and endearing, the romance was hot, and the whole book was a joy to read!
So the whole story started when an unexpected – but memorably hot kiss – with a complete stranger at an overly stuffy engagement party led to the flu from hell, the worst audition of Ruby’s life, and thusly no way to pay her rent. At that point, with her options closing, she was sure things couldn’t possibly go more wrong…
But when a second encounter with said same sexy stranger led to a further unexpected offer to babysit his exotic pets while he was away on business for five week, it took her life down a path she couldn’t have expected… including the undeniable sexual tension between her and the no-longer-stranger who, despite his flu-related transgressions, was quickly becoming her uncouth white knight.
    “Do not laugh at me.”
He holds up his hands in mock surrender, his cheek ticking. “I guess it’s a good thing you didn’t wait until tomorrow to shower or you would’ve been stuck in there until the hot water ran out.”
“It was like being blasted by a volcano.”
“It’s not that hot. There’s a sensor that won’t let the temperature get too high. I’m not sure why you didn’t just run past the jets and save yourself, but I’ll take white knight status.”
“I have sensitive skin and I panicked.” I reply.
“Too bad you didn’t panic after you were naked. I didn’t even get to see anything good.”
My mouth drops. “So much for being a white knight.”
His grin widens. “I still saved you from my molten lava shower.”
“Only because you thought you were going to see me naked, apparently.”
His eyes drop again… “I can be a white knight with a dirty mind, can’t I?”
Both Ruby and Bancroft came from wealthy families, but while she was trying to distance herself from that world and family by making her own way without their help or involvement, he was still involved in his family’s company after retiring from a career of professional rugby. Usually someone within her family’s world wouldn’t appeal to her, but his down to earth attitude towards life drew her in. And the same could be said for how he saw her. She was a breath of fresh air in his life — unprimped, uninterested in money, and not out to impress anyone, all she cared about was standing on her own two feet. His whole life had been filled with women throwing themselves at him but despite his sports star status and being such an eligible bachelor, in his own words, he “didn’t leave a trail of fucked fans across the globe” so I really appreciated that he had every opportunity to be a manwhore, and yet he wasn’t.
Despite being oceans apart for the first part of the book, I was pleasantly surprised that Ruby and Bancroft still shared sizzling chemistry, which of course led to the next big question. What would happen when he got home? Would they take their flirtations to the next level? Or part ways for good? HA! This is a romance so of course they take things to the next level… but reading their story was just such a fun experience and I just kept laughing and chuckling to myself over their banter and antics.
“Are you always this antagonistic?” She throws up her hands. “You kissed me. You smelled good and you’re good with your tongue so I went with it. Stop judging me.”
“I’m not judging. I’m just asking. So on top of being incredibly attractive and smelling good, I’m also an excellent kisser.”
“I never said excellent, you added your own adjective. And if you keep talking about how attractive you are you’ll go from a ten to a nine pretty fast.”
    “Oh? So I’m a ten?”
“You were an eleven before you started pushing this angle. That last question puts you at an eight-point-five.”
“I guess I should change the subject before I’m in the negative.”
“You just earned back half a point.”
“Maybe I should stop while I’m ahead, or less behind, anyways.”
    “Good plan.”
If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, then this is definitely a book you’ll want to read! It’s well written, fun, sexy, swoony, and has a hero and heroine I couldn’t help but fall in love with! This is definitely a new favorite 🙂

    Genre: Romance, Contemporary Romance
Theme: Class Differences, Enemies to Lovers, Renovation Romance
I’ve been a rom-com mood lately, a void that Hollywood (despite their plethora of Chrises) refuses to fill, so I picked up I Flipping Love You by Helena Hunting. It was described to me as a romantic comedy with a case of mistaken identity and a lot of sexy fireworks. The problem was, I wouldn’t say this book is actually very funny and some of the devices used to try and make it humorous didn’t work for me. It was a solid contemporary romance and I enjoyed it, but I didn’t get the chuckles I was looking for.
Rian Sutter and her sister Marley are twins. Marley swipes Pierce Whitfield’s Tesla with her own car and then flees the scene. Pierce later sees Rian in a grocery store, assumes she’s Marley, and confronts her about the damage. Rian pays for the damage (and doesn’t chew her sister out the way I would), and Pierce asks her out. She refuses. He seems like an arrogant asshole to her.
Now Pierce asking her out is tied up with the car repair so initially Pierce read as pretty gross to me. Take this scene where Rian realizes Pierce is asking her out:
“Are you asking me out on a date?”
“We can call it a date if that’s what you want.”
It suddenly clicks what he’s trying to do. “Hold on a second. Are you trying to blackmail me into having sex with you over a car repair? Because if that’s your angle, I’m sorry to tell you, but you can’t put a price tag on my vagina. She is not for sale.”
Half of me is flattered that he thinks sex with me would be worth trading for a three-grand car repair. The other half of me is disgusted that I’m flattered at all.
Three grand is still a pretty hefty price tag, but still. Only a few cars have parked in my garage. I’m not interested in letting another in there simply to avoid paying for a repair, even if the car is a nice one and is owned by a seriously hot man.
“Whoa. Simmer down, sweetheart. I’m not trying to blackmail you. You were the one asking about a sexist comment discount. All I’m suggesting is that we discuss how to proceed over drinks. They can be of the non alcoholic variety if you’re worried about being under the influence around me. And for the record, I neither said nor implied that sexual favors would be involved, but I’m quite intrigued that you’ve automatically assumed it would be included in the deal.”
Well, gosh, Piece, when you live in a world where your body is not safe from predatory behavior, it’s kind of easy to jump to the conclusion that the guy who you owe three grand to, and who keeps flirting with you and asking you out, might be hoping to profit sexually from your sister’s mistake. Welcome to being a woman. Every conversation and transaction with a strange man has layers of “am I safe?” running beneath it.
So this scene squicked me out, and I assumed I would hate Pierce for the rest of the book, but he did improve as a character later on.
Rian pays Pierce and fully expects never to see him again. Then she and Marley (whom I still wouldn’t be talking to) head to the Hamptons for a beach weekend. Marley and Rian work in real estate. Marley does the people stuff, and Rian runs the numbers. They’re hoping to get enough liquidity to buy a Hamptons home and flip it, with their ultimate goal being getting enough money to buy the Mission Mansion, a house that once belonged to their late grandmother.
Rian was close to her grandmother, a woman who raised her and Marley after their parents were convicted of fraud and fled the US. Knowing that her parents’ white collar crime would impact their ability to do business in real estate, Marley and Rian try to keep their family connections a secret, and it’s something that Rian feels a lot of shame over. Rian and Marley grew up well off, but their parents’ actions bankrupted the family, forcing them to sell the Mission Mansion, the only place Rian ever really felt safe and loved.
So they head to the Hamptons to snoop around and see what might be coming up for sale, and guess whose house they rented for the weekend? Yup, Pierce. Well, Pierce and his brother Lawson. These dudes are rich (although how rich isn’t revealed until later). Lawson is buying up Hamptons properties and renovating them for rent. Pierce, a patent attorney, fucked up an important patent for his family’s business, is embarrassed by it, and is taking the summer off to reevaluate if that’s even the job he really wants. Basically, Lawson buys houses and then Pierce hits things with a hammer to work out his tender emotions.
So Pierce and Rian run into each other, and now that the car thing is solved, wind up having super hot sex on top of a running washing machine. Front loading, I would assume. Then Rian realizes that Pierce is basically her competition in the local housing market and is like “Oh, fuck.”
In terms of conflict, I think if you removed Lawson and Marley from the book, Pierce and Rian would have been fine having a relationship and being in the same business. It’s their siblings who freak out over the boning-plus-professional-competition thing. Pierce and Rian actually handle it like adults.
And Pierce slowly morphs into more of a beta hero. He doesn’t just want sex. He wants to cuddle and have lazy Sundays and be a good partner to Rian. He’s a hero in pursuit but he’s not gross about it (anymore).
My issue was, there were parts in this book that were clearly intended to be laugh-out-loud or at least snicker-out-loud funny and they fell short. For example, Rian and Pierce have beach sex and she gets eaten alive by sand fleas (Pierce is very sweet and gets her Benedryl and rubs anti-itch ointment all over her). This scene didn’t work for me, but for very Elyse-specific reasons. If I even read about bug bites, I get sympathetically itchy. Having sand flea bites all over your body isn’t funny, it’s terrifying. My sister mentioned mites to me when we brought our kitten, Fisher, home from the rescue and I had anxiety-induced hives until we got him to the vet to confirm he was pest free. I would seriously wake up with hives on my face because I thought he might have mites, and while I’m sure not everyone has my psychosomatic prowess, that scene still made me itchy.
There’s another scene where Rian and Pierce are both trying to cozy up to an “old” lady Muriel to get the inside track when she sells her house. Rian visits with her and Peirce helps her out with odd jobs, including cleaning her pool while wearing a Speedo:
He swaggers–it’s definitely not a walk or a strut–around the pool, grabbing the net. He starts at the other side, giving me time to ask some pertinent questions. I have an idea as to why Pierce is here–likely for a similar reason I am. We both want the house. I want to sell it or flip it, and he wants to buy it and rent it. It could end up working in both our favors, unless Marley thinks this is a better house to flip–then I really will be sleeping with the enemy.
He’s definitely got a leg up, or at least another, more enticing appendage. And showing up in a Speedo is a new level of playing dirty. I can’t compete with his six-pack.
    “Does Pierce stop by often?”
“Every few days or so. He helps me water the plants and take care of the gardens between landscaping company visits. He usually brings his dog, Trip.”
“Trip?” I feign a questioning look.
She laughs and takes another long gulp of her drink. “Poor little broken mutt has three legs. You’d almost think they’re twins.” She nods in Pierce’s direction with a wink and a nudge.
Okay, so first of all, I’d drink with Muriel. Secondly, Muriel is sixty-five which isn’t an age I consider “old.”
What’s really gross here is the fact that both of them are manipulating Muriel in order to get a better shot at buying her house. Pierce even acknowledges that she’s lonely and looking for friendship, like he’s trying to be a nice guy or something. Except he shows up in a Speedo, specifically to titillate her. Rian bakes her cookies. Neither of them have any intention of keeping up with Muriel after she moves. Their motives are selfish and it wasn’t cool. I don’t like it when protagonists think of other characters as devices instead of people, and I don’t like it when protagonists take advantage of another person’s vulnerability for their own profit.
Muriel aside, Pierce and Rian’s summer romance gets complicated by their competing interests, their siblings who aren’t great, and the fact that neither of them wants to talk about their families. For Rian that means admitting her parents committed fraud then abandoned her sister and her. For Pierce that means telling Rian that’s he’s actually a really wealthy guy, not just a dude helping his brother renovate houses.
Overall, I Flipping Love You was okay. It wasn’t really funny and it took me awhile to warm up to the hero. A lot of the conflict revolved around shitty family members, but then a lot of conflict in real life does too. In the end, I Flipping Love You was a decent contemporary if you like home renovation and beach settings, but it didn’t deliver the laughs I was craving.

Hooking Up by Helena Hunting: Amie is horrified, humiliated, and embarrassed to have her marriage fall apart only hours after saying ‘I do.’ She thought she had finally picked the right guy after years of always dating the wrong guys. To escape the scandal and her faithless and unapologetic husband, she goes on their honeymoon to Bora Bora. She needs distance and plenty of alcohol before she can start putting her life back together.
Lex is outraged on Amie’s behalf by the actions of his own cousin. There’s no love lost between them, but Lex wanted Armstrong to be better so that Amie would be happy. He’s the charming, fun loving, sexy, and playful cousin who puts family first. Knowing the drama about to ensue, he heads to Bora Bora to check in on the family resorts.
Both are surprised to run into each other at the airport before heading to the island paradise. Amie struggles to face him after the events at her reception and then the airport, but Lex is a gentlemen and quite helpful. Lex can’t quite help himself from flirting, despite the situation.
“And if you’re bored while you’re working on your tan, or you need any assistance with that treasure chest in your carry-on, I’m more than happy to lend a hand with that, too. Both, actually.”
And we’re back to flirting. “Is that right?”
Lex is more than willing to help out Amie in whatever ways she needs, including an island fling where no one has to know. But their fling is more than just sex and both struggle with their feelings when they’re back in New York. They can’t avoid each other, even if they wanted to, but Amie’s still married.
    “I don’t know what we’re doing.”
He drags gentle fingers down my cheek. “Well, I guess that depends.”
    “On.”
    “On what you want.”
Hooking Up is hot, sexy, and fun. Helena Hunting provides heat, humor, banter, rivalries, and family drama. Ms. Hunting shows another side to Amie and Lex in this standalone set in the same world as Shacking Up. Fans of Sawyer Bennett, Jaci Burton, and Sydney Logan will love Hooking Up.

A new kind of love story about flipping houses, taking risks, and landing that special someone who’s move-in ready…
    SHE’S GOT CURB APPEAL
Rian Sutter grew up with the finer things in life. Spending summers in The Hamptons was a normal occurrence for her until her parents lost everything years ago. Now Rian and her sister are getting their life, and finances, back on track through real estate. Not only do they buy and sell houses to the rich and famous, but they finally have the capital to flip their very own beachfront property. But when she inadvertently catches the attention of a sexy stranger who snaps up every house from under her, all bets are off…
    HE’S A FIXER UPPER
Pierce Whitfield doesn’t normally demo kitchens, install dry wall, or tear apart a beautiful woman’s dreams. He’s just a down-on-his-luck lawyer who needed a break from the city and agreed to help his brother work on a few homes in the Hamptons. When he first meets Rian, the attraction is undeniable. But when they start competing for the same pieces of prime real estate, the early sparks turn into full-blown fireworks. Can these passionate rivals turn up the heat on their budding romance — without burning down the house?
I FLIPPING LOVE YOU, set in the Shacking Up world, follows two people, both working in real estate, who find themselves vying for the same properties in the Hamptons, leading to a sometimes-not-so-friendly competition.
I Flipping Love You is the latest addition to the Shacking Up series by Helena Hunting and it features Amalie’s brother Pierce. Readers of this series will remember Amalie from Hooking Up as she was the heroine in that book. Her brother is a lawyer in Manhattan but after a goof on his part, he’s taking some time off from work to let things cool down and work themselves out.
Now that he’s got a lot of spare time on his hands, he’s in the Hamptons helping his younger brother buy houses and flip them for profit. It is in the Hamptons where he meets Rian Sutter. Her sister hits his prized Tesla and then takes off so he’s been stalking the grocery store where the hit and run happened, in hopes of catching that woman that is responsible for $3k in damages to his car. He catches more than he expected and he’s glad for it because Rian Sutter??? He’s mighty interested in Rian Sutter.
Rian was a strong heroine that has plans. After being stripped of everything and then abandoned by her parents, Rian and her twin sister Marley have only had each other. They have great memories of their grandparents and their grandparent’s mansion in the Hamptons. Rian and Marley have chosen to make a life for themselves in the Hamptons, close to their grandparent’s mansion because Rian has a dream that they’ll work really hard and then the mansion will go up for sale and they’ll buy it and open a B&B. She’s been holding on to that dream for a long time because she wants to hold onto something good from her past. She’s got a secret that she doesn’t like to tell people and while I understood her reasons, it played a part in my annoyance with her character. I’ll get to that a little later.
Pierce has his own stuff going on but he’s focused on the here and the now. He’s really enjoying himself working on these flips with his brothers. They’re buying up beachfront properties, doing little flips on them and renting them out. Becoming a lawyer wasn’t really his idea, it was his father’s idea and he kind of fell into the career path and now that he’s had time away from his day job, he’s starting to think that going his own way is probably what he wants to do. Immediately though, he wants to get to know Rian Sutter. She keeps showing up everywhere that he is and he’s attracted as all get out. He’s not a quitter so he puts in the work.
Pierce and Rian were a fantastic couple and their story kept me laughing from beginning to end. Their story was so much fun. The chemistry was great, the romance was delicious and Pierce, well, he was hot as all get out. I completely adored him. I loved how determined he was where Rian was concerned and I loved getting to know him. He was a great brother, a hilarious man and a dedicated lover. What’s not to love about a guy bringing all of that to the party?
Things were going great in my reading adventure until Rian starts to get her cold feet and the way that she handles the shit that is thrown her way left a bad taste in my mouth and I got pretty pissed at her because she was an awesome heroine and then she went and did something so dumb that I wanted to pull her hair some. Alls well that ends well though because Pierce comes through and just bulldozes over her fears and let’s her know that she won’t be able to push him away because she needs him just as much as he needs her and I was glad that he, at least was able to stand firm in his feelings. He had a lot more faith in them then Rian but other than that, the book was fabulous. Great characters, a charming beachfront romance that will make you laugh, happy sigh and just enjoy the heck out of Helena Hunting’s written word. It would be a great summer read.

    Review
An adult review for mature themes and situations
Intense, Emotional, Dark, and Erotic . A love story between two very damaged souls.
I was really curious about Clipped Wings after seeing it at the bookstore. It sounded like something quite different from the normal New Adult books that I have read before and seen around. I knew immediately from the book's description that it was going to be emotional, and bit of a dark read with some serious sexual chemistry between these two characters.
Clipped Wings is about two people who have suffered each in their own way, and are trying to break free from the hurt and loneliness they feel. When Tenley asks tattoo artist Hayden to ink an intricate design on her back, he is immediately intrigued by her and senses that she is hiding something from him. Something dark and tragic. He feels this immediate chemistry and connection with her. He senses the suffering and loneliness that they both share.
No matter how many times I spoke to him, the intensity of my reaction didn't wane. From a single glance it was clear that he was fearless, unchained and unfettered by the confines of what society deemed acceptable; Hayden embodied everything I wasn't but wanted to be.
With all his ink and piercings, Hayden represents everything that Tenley has long for. A wildness and freedom that she has never dared to take. She sees him as an escape from the pain she is suffering, but the emotional connection they begin to have together is more than she expected. A bond that goes beyond the physical. Both are hiding secrets that may prevent them from ever really experience what they really need in one another, especially when the past comes to visit them.
    What I enjoyed:
Frankly, reading Clipped Wings was like receiving a tattoo vicariously through Tenley. The book describes the art form of tattooing and its unique beauty through Tenley's eyes and her experience with Hayden as he creates a unique and beautiful piece of art for her. Art that becomes a strong and symbolic design that bonds them together and acts as a sort of healing process for Tenley, bringing her and Hayden ever closer.

I liked the fact that the story is told from both Hayden and Tenley's point of view and in alternating chapters. I love alternating pov/chapters and it's something I really enjoy when reading and trying to get inside the characters head, especially with such intense emotions and sexual tension running across the pages.

I enjoyed how the author brought Hayden and Tenley together. Hayden and Tenley would seem to be complete opposites for all intents and purposes, but both are emotionally vulnerable and this comes across as they slowly let down their barriers. I was held captivated by these two who seem so different on the outside, but found such strong chemistry in one another. The romance between these two was seriously hot, exotic and erotic.

I was surprised how well I was able to emotionally connect with both Hayden and Tenley despite it being a dark, edgier read than I usually pick up.

Hayden...Hayden would appear to be the total bad boy with all his piercings and tattoos, but on the inside he is sweet, caring, and as vulnerable and damaged as Tenely. I was surprised by this cupcake addicted, kitten wielding, reformed bad-boy. He's not what I expected at all, on the outside he seems all tough and alpha, but on the inside he's more of the opposite. He's smart beyond the normal textbook college bound guy, reads seriously deep thinking literature, runs his own Tattoo business, and is a very gifted artist. There's a few times though that Hayden lets all his pent up emotions get the better of him, especially when he feels threatened of losing Tenley, and goes a bit Neanderthal on us. I still found him endearing, and through Tenley, a hot, cupcake addicted and somewhat exotic mess of a guy with more than enough emotions to spare.

Tenley, on the other hand, comes off shy and very reserved. Even awkward at times around Hayden. Several scenes had me smiling at her jumpiness and awkwardness around Hayden. Despite the heavy burden she is carrying, it was these moments that really made it easy for me to connect with her. She's intelligent and what you would expect in your from someone attending an ivy league school. But, wow, underneath all those layers, is someone that is suffering, emotionally and physically, that feels both repressed and lonely. Hayden brings out a side of Tenley that she has always been afraid to reach for. A freedom to be what she wants rather than what others expect of her. It was great to see her start to take charge of herself - to be strong, and okay with her wants and desires. To try and look beyond her pain.

Clipped Wings is also about the power of friendship. There's several characters, and a special couple that are really there for and help support Hayden and Tenley. They often added a bit of humor and quirkiness that helped lighten the mood when emotions were running high and at moments of darkness.

I liked the contrast between the two settings that mostly occur in Clipped Wings, which just happen to be across the street from each other. The tattoo shop Hayden owns, Inked Armor and Serendipity, the used bookstore and cafe that Tenley works at. Both are so rich and full of atmosphere, both representing an aspect of Hayden and Tenley.
    What I didn't care for:
There was almost too much negativity going on, coming from several different directions that Hayden and Tenley had to deal with, and the readers as well. So, you really have to be in the mood for some dark periods of turmoil when reading this story.

I wanted to see more positive - emotional growth in Hayden and Tenley before the closure of the story. Luckily, book two, Inked Armour is already here, and I'm hoping to see the growth they each need to find in themselves, in the continuation of their story.

How soon Hayden and Tenley began their relationship. You may think I'm insane, but I wanted less sex. Yes, you read right. Book Swoon, who loves to swoon over the romance wanted less sex and more sexual tension and emotional growth. These two are like magnets to one another, you know its going to be hot and fierce. So, I wanted to see these two hold out longer, teasing us readers longer. I wanted Hayden and Tenley to catch up somewhat emotionally before they jumped in physically. I thinks this is also in part because I knew they were both so seriously, vulnerable, that it was almost sensory overload. Yeah, I said that.
Clipped Wings delivers an emotionally, gut wrenching story and the beginning of an romance between two very different, damaged people. I would recommend this to adult readers who enjoy the New Adult genre, and are looking for a sexy, emotionally darker, and edgier read.
My Rating: 3.5 stars. I liked it.

HOOKING UP BY HELENA HUNTING | 4 Star Review

ARC provided by the publisher for review.
Can we talk about Helena Hunting’s newest, Hooking Up? Sometimes you just need a book that’ll let you get away from it all. Hooking Up was the escape I needed from more serious reads. It’s hot, hilarious fun, that leaves you happy with where things end up. 4 stars.
Amalie Whitfield’s story begins on her wedding day, and it’s going nothing like the way she planned. Her new husband, Armstrong, is caught in a, shall we say, extremely compromising position with one of the wedding guests. It’s bad decision-making all around, but of course, Armstrong gets off easy and somehow it’s on the woman he was caught with to shoulder the shame, ridicule and media scrutiny. To stick it to Armstrong and avoid the gossip at home, Amie goes on their honeymoon trip with plans to find a Hookup Hottie on the island.
Boy, does she find one. Their affair is torrid to say the least. Hooking Up is h-o-t hot. If you’re a reader who likes romances on the racy side, Hooking Up is for you. If you’re a more demure reader, Amie will seem pretty scandalous, but that’s the fun. From the moment Amie steps foot in the airport, the old Anarchy Amie is back in full effect. The airport is also where one of the funniest scenes in the book takes place, I was cry-laughing (laugh-crying?) and cringing all at the same time.
The thing I can’t quite figure out about Amie is how she ended up with her cheating husband in the first place. The book tells you it’s because she was a rebellious teenager and some of that bad behavior spilled over into her 20s. Marrying Armstrong was part of being less of a disappointment and a “better, less rebellious version of myself.” All I can tell you is, she had some serious blinders on not to notice this guy was a stereotypical, richy-rich douchebag. She never noticed his manipulative, competitive side?
Hooking Up is a standalone that exists in the same universe as Shacking Up. Ruby and Bancroft (the names in the Mills family are something else, I kept hoping for a Huntington), make appearances but you don’t need to have read it to follow what’s happening. Ruby and Amie have a great friendship and you get a good dose of it in Hooking Up, which is awesome.
Hooking Up is out now, you can read an excerpt here. For more from Helena Hunting, check out her back catalog.
Fave line: Oh god, the airport scene. The whole thing.

All I wanted was a nice wedding. Instead I end up with a husband who gets a blow job during our reception – and it’s broadcast to everyone attending.
I’ve enjoyed Helena Hunting’s voice in the past – she usually makes me giggle and highlight all of her over-the-top silly quotes. Her books are super fun. Hooking Up is also fun, and a great read, but it’s not as raunchy and goofy as some of her previous books. It has a really sweet hero and a heroine who wants an annulment! For good reason….
Amie was once a bit of a wild child. She likes a bad boy, she has gotten into some trouble – overall just causing her family a lot of stress. When she meets Armstrong at a party one night, he woos her. He comes from a very respectable family. He has a very good job. Her family is very happy she is dating him. A proposal and a wedding soon follow. She has the perfect life! Except when Armstrong is caught getting a blow job from someone who is not Amie – during their wedding reception.
Amie falls apart. She rips Armstrong a new one, cuts her wedding dress off and koala-bear hugs the first guy she sees – which happens to be Armstrong’s cousin, Lexington. Lex met Amie the same night she met Armstrong – but Armstrong won the flirting contest. Lex felt a lot of chemistry that night, but bowed out to let his cousin date her. Armstrong and Lex were very close growing up, but Armstrong has a dark side, and they are more enemies now. So when a distraught Amie starts humping him in the bridal suite – he knows things are seriously wrong.
Everyone goes home – and Amie is convinced to still take her honeymoon by herself to Bora Bora after demanding an annulment from Armstrong. Lex works for his father, and his father asks him to go to Bora Bora on a business trip to look over some of their resorts. Lex and Amie have no idea the other is scheduled on the same plane, both going to Bora Bora – until they arrive at the airport.
Throw in some champagne, and a very long airplane ride, and these two chat away. They end up very far away from all of Amie’s problems and instead of problems, she starts getting a lot of orgasms from Lex.
“I’m assuming you can feel that.” I roll my hips, just to be clear what that is.
    “Yes.”
I lower my head so my lips are inches from hers. “What does that feel like to you, Amie?”
    “It feels l-like—”
“—like I’m playing you?” I skim the length of her throat with my free hand.
    “No.” It’s the softest whisper.
“Does it feel like I’m being nice?” I rest a finger under her chin and tip it up so she meets my gaze. “I assure you, there’s nothing nice about the things I want to do to you, the ways I want to have you.”
“Oh. Well, that’s good to know.” The wide eyes and innocent stare morph into the same wild look I caught a glimpse of in her bridal suite. “Because I’m pretty sick and fucking tired of nice, polite sex.”
But Armstrong is not done causing trouble. Over and over in this book. Armstrong is butt hurt that she dumps him and refuses to let it go. Enter Lex – the sweetest guy. He listens to Amie, he never takes advantage of her. While some feel like he is trying to get revenge on his cousin by sleeping with Amie, he truly isn’t. Bora Bora really was a coincidence, and he has had feelings for Amie for a long time. He gives her what she needs in Bora Bora – an escape. And then they come back home and have to figure out how to have a relationship in the real world.
“You’re going to be fine. You’re stronger than you realize.”
    “I don’t want to go.”
“I know. I don’t want you to go either.” He tips my chin up. His eyes meet mine for the briefest moment before they fall closed, sealing his emotions behind them. Ones I recognize. Ones that feel all too familiar. He dips down to press a soft kiss to my lips.
I’m sure he means to keep it chaste, but the second we connect all the desperation comes bubbling to the surface, erupting like a volcano, and suddenly we’re devouring each other. I feel the loss of him in my chest already. I don’t want to walk away from this, but there’s no other choice.
    Just stay on vacation forever!!
I loved Amie and how she refuses to listen to anymore bullshit coming from Armstrong’s mouth. And that she takes some time for herself, after getting back from Bora Bora to sort her life out and make sure Lex is truly the right one for her. She was hurt so much, and then Lex was thrust into her life so fast, I like that she has to question some things before making that committment.
Lex is charming and flirty – but not sleazy at all. He has manners, and is considerate, and is also a god in bed. *wink*
Really well done – highly recommend this one.

    HOOKING UP
    Series: Shacking Up #2
    Genre: Contemporary Romance
    Author: Helena Hunting
    Release Date: November 7, 2017

Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception ― but for all the wrong reasons.
They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical.
Filled with hilariously scandalous situations and enough sexual chemistry to power an airplane from New York City to the South Pacific, Hooking Up is the next standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Helena Hunting, the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series and Shacking Up.
    AMAZON
He’s sweaty, I’m sweaty, we’re both glistening from the exertion. I glance down, checking out his abs as they ripple. His body is unreal. He should never wear clothes again. Ever.
    “Hungry?” He’s grinning.
“That was my vagina asking for more orgasms. We need to know how long it’s going to be before ‘Oh God’ can provide more of those.”
It’s official: I’m obsessed with Helena Hunting’s words. This series has become my go-to when I need a sexy and feel good romance that’s full of laughs and sizzle. It just never disappoints and I will never get enough of it. Admittedly I did things a little backwards by reading I Flipping Love You before this book, but since these are all interconnecting standalones, I never felt like I lost anything in the story by doing that.
Hooking Up was a totally addicting read full of laughs and sizzle. The premise of the story was a delicious page turner. I was riveted to the pages from beginning to end with a goofy smile on my face the entire time. I simply couldn’t get enough of these characters.
What could be the worst thing to happen on your wedding day? For Amalie Whitfield, it’s hearing your brand new husband getting a bj from someone that’s not you over the reception loud speakers. Talk about your embarrassing disaster. So what’s a girl to do? Cut herself out of her dress with shears and proposition her soon to be ex-husband’s incredibly hot cousin in the bridal room, of course. What? A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. Besides, she did Lex before her groom. It just happened to be that he looked like the epitome of bad boy and too good looking to be good for her. She’s not exactly known for her great choice in men. Her current predicament is a prime example. In an embarrassed and devastated fog, she decides to go on her honeymoon alone to recover…only for Lex to end up on the same tropical island to work a deal for his family’s hotel business. Suffice it to say, steamy moment ensue.
Can I just tell you all of the ways I adored Lex? God, this man was utter perfection. He’s sweet with a side of dirty talker, tatted, muscled, and totally gone for Amelie. They know that all the odds are stacked against them, but a tropical temporary fling can’t hurt, right? Until feelings get involved. And then things get a whole lot more complicated.
Amelie was a great heroine. I loved her sass and how she took no sh*t from her cheating “husband”. As for Armstrong, the douche? I have never wanted a character to be killed off more than I did him. I swear I spent half the book hoping he’d be hit by a bus. Talk about your king of douchebags. This man took the cake. I absolutely hated him.
The romance was fantastic! I loved Amelie and Lex together. I loved their chemistry, in and out of bed. I loved their banter and watching them fall hard for each other.
If you’re looking for a lighthearted, feel good romance that’s full of steam and humor, this series is an absolute must read. Hooking Up was another amazing addition to this addicting series, and I’m already itching for my next fix.

Can these passionate rivals turn up the heat on their budding romance—without burning down the house?

➳Who said one cannot mix business with pleasure? Because Helena Hunting knows how to bring the comedic, extra spicy, and sexy romances that one always looks for to be swooned over…

➳When it comes down to rom-com novels, Helena Hunting is absolutely the queen of them all! There is no other author out there that can truly master the ideal purpose of making the reader laugh in a romance novel, where erotic scenes can be combined together and be brought to be considered such a steamy masterpiece that you can utterly read over and over again. Rian and Pierce are two individuals that during a “hit-and-run” accident met and the chemistry between them both is one that sparkles like a unicorn’s shiny bottom, and crackles like the fireworks on the fourth of July. Their attraction to me seems like an instant one that is not like the normal smutty insta-love stories I read from AR, but Pierce and Rian definitely have those sizzling feelings that of lust, the moment they meet. Being in the environment where beaches are right around the corner for the summer, Pierce— the brother of Amalie from HOOKING UP—leaves his life in Manhattan to spend the summer relaxing with the company of his brother. That’s when he stumbles upon Rian, thinking that she is someone else due to a past accident that happened to his car, when in reality he got himself confused with Rian’s fraternal twin sister.
➳As both characters quickly learn to realize the truth behind the “hit-and-run,” Pierce and Rian constantly keep meeting in locations that are purely through fate, or like Pierce would like to say, through the idea of it being “kismet.” Something that I find rather romantic in every essence. Rian is a strong minded woman, with the pure love of numbers, who wants the best for herself and her sisters. When I mean “the best,” I am not regarding having the best that money can buy, but simply have a stable life that does not include any sort of financial struggle. When she meets Pierce, nothing changes, things do indeed fall more into place when the coincidence of working next to him as a client becomes a puzzling dilemma but also a relief for Rian. Their attraction is one that never diminishes no matter where they are— it could be the beach, a kitchen, a near by restaurant, the outside pool of a horny old lady’s house, or even the laundry room, Rian and Pierce are just the ultimate sex fiends that Helena has written.

    ➳When feelings are being added to the sexual relationship Pierce and Rian start off with, these two become one of the most complex couples I have ever read. But a realization of what is really going on is what truly brings them together as one to enlighten each other that they are just simply meant to be. Both are complete goofballs, making me wish I were Rian for the taking of being with Pierce;
“We’re having a sleepover. We’re going to do this all night, and I’m going to cuddle you like a motherfucker after finishing sexing every last orgasm out of you…”
➳Overall, this is yet again another romance novel by the Queen Hunting that has mastered anything beyond the rom-com category. I don’t just say this because she is one of my favorite authors of all time, but she just simply never seems to diminish in the charisma aspect, and also the passionate factor when it comes down to an ideal romance novel. Thank you so much to SMP for allowing me to take a part in this journey because this series is one that I’ll constantly be going back to for a re-read.

REVIEW: The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting
Posted July 12th, 2018 by Sara @HarlequinJunkie in Blog, Contemporary Romance, Review / 4 comments

The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting: Lilah is having a terrible day. It gets even worse when she finally runs into Ethan again after their break-up eight years ago. A lot has happened in that time, but she’s still very close to his parents who are like her own parents. It doesn’t help that she’s fresh off a divorce, Ethan is looking better than ever, and she’s very definitely still attracted to him.

Ethan is happy in a sense to be traded back to the NHL team in Minnesota. It’ll be good to be closer to his family, but he feels like his career might be over soon. He was quite the phenom in high school and college, but he’s struggling to regain the confidence he used to have on the ice. The best perk of moving home again is seeing Lilah and maybe having a second chance with the only girl he’s ever loved.

Ethan and Lilah were inseparable as childhood best friends that turned into romance in high school. Their lives diverged on different paths when Ethan was drafted and the break-up was hard on both of them. While Ethan isn’t a playboy, he’s also never found anyone quite like Lilah or the connection they shared as teens in love.

She bats it away. “What’re you doing? Don’t do that.”
“I’m trying to calm you down so I can explain myself, and so you’ll actually listen to the words instead of that angry white noise up in your head.”
“I don’t want you to calm me down! I want to be angry! I have a right to be mad at you.”

Ethan is very much ready to discuss the past so they can resume their relationship, but Lilah just about pulls out all the stops to avoid their past. Ethan is certainly persistent and takes advantage of any opening he gets. They have great chemistry and banter and they quickly begin to spend all of their time together. His life is better on and off the ice when they’re together, but they have to adjust as they are different people now with new goals and dreams.

    “I’ve already expressed my interest.”
“But is that all you’re interested in? I need to know exactly what’s at stake with this kiss so I can strategize my approach.”
“This isn’t a hockey game, Ethan. It’s a kiss, which will hopefully also lead to some scoring.”

Lilah isn’t sure what hurt worse: the day Ethan left her to focus on his hockey career, or the day he came back eight years later. He might think they can pick up just where they left off, but she’s no longer that same girl and never wants to be again.

Ethan Kane wants his glory days back. And that includes having Lilah by his side. With her, he was magic. They were magic. All he has to do is make her see that.

Just when Lilah might finally be ready to let him in, though, she finds out their reunion has nothing to do with her and everything to do with his game. But Ethan’s already lost her once, and even if it costs him his career, he’ll do anything to keep from losing her again.

THE GOOD LUCK CHARM by Helena Hunting | 4-star Review
the good luck charmThe Good Luck Charm is everything: hot, sweet, sour and totally satisfying. A relatable, sexy, romance that transcends age.
In The Good Luck Charm, Helena Hunting builds on her trademark hilarity and heat and steps up with a second-chance romance that is much more than a rekindling of an old attraction. It’s also about the heroine’s struggle to put herself first, and it’s handled in a way that makes it relatable for women of all ages.

Ethan and Lilah were high school sweethearts who broke up when Ethan was drafted into the NHL. When he’s traded, he reappears in their hometown eight years after their split. Lilah finds herself reverting to old patterns, shaping her life around his. The chemistry between them is as strong as ever (we’ll get to that in a second), and that’s part of the problem. She knows she’s not the girl she used to be, but it’s so easy to fall back. I was so invested in Lilah that at times I just wanted to shake her and say, “Girl, you know what you need to do. Just do it!” The good news though, is that Lilah isn’t the only one maturing. Ethan goes through his own a ha! moment about their relationship.

The photo for this review was inspired by the Hot Lips chapter and this I-am-dead moment:

His warm breath washes over my lips, and he still as the end of his nose brushes against mine. “Can I kiss you?” The words barely carry. I tip my chin up in response, and then his mouth is on mine, softly, sweetly — at least at first. I taste penance in his gentleness. I feel his regret in the tender way his palm curves along my jaw, and I sense his need for forgiveness in the tentative stroke of his tongue.

The Good Luck Charm is everything – hot, sweet, sour and totally satisfying.
