WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Celia Kyle is a former dance teacher and accountant who turned her hand to paranormal and urban fantasy romance, and also to science fiction with a pinch of romance, writing as Erin Tate. The author of almost a hundred self-published novels, novellas, and short stories in these various genres, Kyle made her mainstream publishing breakthrough with the 2018 Wolf’s Mate. “[This] is the first book in my new ‘Shifter Rogues’ series and it is amazeballs,” Kyle told Joyce Lamb in an online Happy Ever After interview. “Of course, that’s my personal opinion but seriously … amazeballs. There’s lots of action, lots of laughs … sprinkled throughout. The hero (Declan) is all kinds of brooding hotness and is part of a secret shifter agency who does bad, bad things for all the right reasons. (So, he’s perfect, right?) The heroine (Abby) manages to get mixed up in Declan’s operation and goes from unassuming accountant to a 10-key-calculator-wielding badass-ish.”
In an interview on the Evangeline Anderson Blog, Kyle commented on what genre she most enjoys writing: “I love them all equally? That’s what parents say when asked about their kids, right? … I started with paranormal and still love it the most even though I’ve branched out into scifi and urban fantasy. … I write what I love and then hope that readers love what I write! In reality, every day is different, the world is in a constant state of change. The best anyone can do is… try their best.”
No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It and Roaring Up the Wrong Tree
Kyle’s 2013 novel, No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It, “has it all–sexy were-bears, a bit of action, bad guys, laugher and goofy quips all wrapped up with a romance story that made me very happy,” noted a contributor in the San Francisco Review of Books website. This novel is one of many that the author sets in Grayslake, Georgia, featuring various shapeshifters. This novel features a hunky werebear, Ty. Mia has inherited her grandfather’s house in Grayslake, but the house appears to come with a bear cub she discovers in the pantry. Little does Mia know that this cuddly bundle of fur is actually the leader of a werebear clan. Ty for his part is attracted to the good-looking Mia, who is actually–unknown to her–one quarter werebear herself. The contributor in the San Francisco Review of Books website further commented: “Paranormal romance readers can’t go wrong in giving No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It a try. It’s quirky, fun, sexy and highly entertaining. I greatly enjoyed this author’s storytelling voice and heartily recommend this to anyone who likes their shifter romances and heroes on the lighter growly side.” On the other hand, a Book Binge website reviewer was unimpressed with the novel, commenting: “I think what this book really needed was a strong editor. I liked the first couple chapters where Mia rescued the cub and she and Ty go to know one another, but from there the story got choppy and the characters started waffling too much.”
Roaring Up the Wrong Tree is also set in Grayslake and features bear shifter Keen Abrams who is mesmerized by Trista, who is half-hyena. The problem is, the local werebear clan leader has declared a purge of all hyenas, and now Keen and Trista face a desperate future. Online Fresh Fiction writer Miranda Owen had praise for this novel, noting: “I loved how he and Trista stuck together and bonded over these conflicts. This has definitely been my favorite book and couple in this series so far. Roaring Up the Wrong Tree is a super sexy romance full of raw emotion and complex characters. I look forward to the next exciting installment”
Hedging His Bets and Waking Up Were
Kyle teams with Mina Carter in the 2013 novel, Hedging His Bets, featuring werehedgehog Blake, who maintains a human form of a bad-boy biker. Blake is not as bad as he portrays himself and is in lust with the Honey, who runs a bar and grill and who very much dislikes bad-boy bikers who might disturb her business. Now Blake has to figure out how to win Honey’s heart and body. A contributor in the online Smart Bitches, Trashy Books did not find much to like in this novel, noting: “On the whole, … this book is utterly ridiculous and knows it, but not well-written enough to hold that up. If it had been trying to take itself seriously, we might be in the coveted F+ territory, but alas, we are not. If it had been well-written enough to take the ridonkadonk to new levels of ridonk, I’d be all over it! Mostly, I’m sad at missed opportunities. As I wrote this review, I got more and more sad.”
Waking Up Were features the alpha lead of a werewolf pack, Declan Ross, who is on the hunt for a rogue wolf in his territory and for any victims of that wolf’s bite. One such victim is Brenna Davis, who awakens one morning after drowning her sorrows in Margaritas to discover a weird bite on her arm. When Declan finds Brenna, he changes his mission to one of keeping her all to himself. “Waking Up Were is a rollicking good time and I’m really glad I picked it to read,” noted a contributor in the San Francisco Review of Books website. “Kyle has a reputation for clever quips and cute sayings throughout her books and this one is no exception. It’s light, it’s fast paced and, it’s romantic and fun at the same time. This is the kind of story a reader picks if they want to just sit back and be entertained for a bit.”
Wolf's Mate
Declan Reed is a shapeshifter in Kyle’s 2018 novel, Wolf’s Mate. Part of the Shifter Operations Command (SHOC) black ops team, he comes the rescue of sexy accountant and cougar shifter Abby Carter when she becomes the target of an anti-shifter organization. Abby has to trust this good-looking werewolf or end up dead.
A Publishers Weekly reviewer had praise for Wolf’s Mate, noting: “Despite an emphasis on action, Kyle doesn’t sacrifice solid character development, including among other members of SHOC, and the sexual tension between Abby and Decian builds to a satisfying climax.” Similarly, a Book Binge website contributor commented: “This was a cute paranormal story. I liked both Abby, Declan and his entire SHOC team. I read this in one sitting as it was a fast read.” A Genre Minx website writer was also impressed, observing: “There was plenty of danger to be had in this story and a betrayal that made me very wary of a certain character. I really enjoyed reading Wolf’s Mate and I am eagerly anticipating the next book in this series. I would highly recommend this book to all fans of paranormal romance!”

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Celia! Please tell us about your new release, Wolf’s Mate.
Celia: Wolf’s Mate is the first book in my new Shifter Rogues series and it is amazeballs. Of course, that’s my personal opinion but seriously … amazeballs. There’s lots of action, lots of laughs, and a good dose of *bow chicka bow bow* sprinkled throughout. The hero (Declan) is all kinds of brooding hotness and is part of a secret shifter agency who does bad, bad things for all the right reasons. (So, he’s perfect, right?) The heroine (Abby) manages to get mixed up in Declan’s operation and goes from unassuming accountant to a 10-key-calculator-wielding badass-ish.
Joyce: Who are three romance authors who turn you into a fangirl?
Celia: Shelly Laurenston is and always will be my number one. I got into writing after reading Pack Challenge and my dream would be to be in anthology with her someday. I mean, it’s a pie-in-the-sky dream, but it’s still a dream.
Patricia Briggs without a doubt. I have devoured all of her books more than once. OK, at least a dozen times each.
Chloe Neill because ohmahgawd she makes vamps super sexy. Like, even if you want to hate some of them … they still have the hotness going on.
Joyce: Would you like to share a favorite moment from your writing career?
Celia: It’s actually sort of a fangirl moment and is both embarrassing and awesome. I had just joined RWA (Romance Writers of America) and decided to check out my local chapter to see if it’d be a good fit for me. I wanted to get a feel for the group and make sure I wasn’t going to have some muppet flail panic attack — totally a thing. Of course, I walk in the door and feel like the girl without friends at a new school. I sort of stand around, trying to figure out what the heck I was thinking when I decided this was a good idea.
So, I’m standing there by myself, totally semi-listening (but not listening) at the conversations around me and suddenly I hear someone in a group nearby say, “C.L., I just finished reading your Crown of Crystal Flame. I loved it!”
In my head, I’m like “No f-ing way. C.L. Wilson is not in my RWA chapter.” I sort of scoot forward (totes casually) and take a peek at her name tag. You know, just to see if one of my goddesses of fantasy romance is sitting five feet away from me. And … she was. C.L. Wilson was right there — five feet away and in my RWA chapter — and I did what any self-respecting author would do.
I fangirled her like a BOSS. There was hugging, squeeing, more hugging. I really did apologize for all the hugs later, but I’m a hugger, so I think I hugged her even as I apologized for hugging her so much.
As a fan of her work, it was amazing to meet her. As an author, it was amazing to see that someone so successful still attends RWA chapter meetings, works on her craft and has some of the same anxieties as someone who’s still a small fish in a very large pond.
Joyce: Do you have a pet that hangs out with you while you’re working?
Katie Kat loves her some odd positions.
Celia: Katie Kat usually chills with me and does everything she can to keep me from working. She sits on me, walks on me, walks back and forth across my lap while she tries to decide where to lie, and then when she does find a spot, she makes sure she’s in the most awkward position ever. I love her, but sometimes I wish she’d get mad at me and go off and pout so I can get work done.
Joyce: What do you do in your spare time?
Celia: I read! I know, that’s totally an unexciting answer, but it’s true. I’m a hard-core bookaholic with no true favorite genre. I might binge on hard science-fiction this week and then inhale sweet historical romances next week.
Joyce: I don’t suppose you’d want to share a picture of you with your ’80s or ’90s hair or perhaps a prom picture?
Definitely ‘a super ’80s thing going on’ here.
Celia: I was actually born in 1980, so I’m probably 7 or so in this picture, but since I have some super ’80s thing going on, I figured I’d hand it over. I have … no idea what I (or my mother) were thinking, but there ya go. It’s almost like a reverse mullet but with LOTS of hairspray. So, so much hairspray.
Joyce: Aww, but adorable!
What are you working on now?
Celia: Right now, I’m editing book two in the Shifter Rogues series — Tiger’s Claim. It features everyone’s favorite tiger shifter who likes to make things go ka-boom (Cole Turner) and a jaguar gal who enjoys an explosion or two.
Joyce: Thanks, Celia!
About Wolf’s Mate:
Danger shouldn’t be this sexy…
Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That’s why she’s an accountant—no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she’ll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf Declan Reed… or end up six feet under.
Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it’s time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he’s going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he’ll have to embrace the darkness he’s fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there’s no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.

Readers, today I have a treat for you–a brief interview and tasty excerpt from NYT and USA Today best selling author, Celia Kyle. I’m sure many of my reader are already in love with Ms. Kyle’s work–she’s topping all the charts in Scifi romance and paranormal romance with multiple sexy series including The Ujal and the M&M Mating Agency. For those of you who don’t know her yet, you’re welcome. 🙂 You’re going to adore her and she’s agreed to give new readers some FREE BOOKS. Even better! So let’s just jump right in—
Yes! Give me free books!
Interview
Me: You have been a published author for a long time and write several different genres. Which is your favorite? And within that genre, what is your most popular book or series?
Celia: Hmm… I love them all equally? That’s what parents say when asked about their kids, right? (Even though you totally know you love your youngest child more. Mainly because I imagine delivery is a lot easier once you get to kid 3.)
ANYWAY *ahem* I started with paranormal and still love it the most even though I’ve branched out into scifi and urban fantasy. (I mean, I couldn’t NOT write about aliens with tails or an ass kicking heroine. It just had to happen.)
As for my bestselling series… I’ve got a super sekrit announcement coming soon! Grayslake: More Than Mated is by far my most popular series and there’s super amazingness coming at the end of March.
Me: E-book publishing is moving FAST. What are the recent changes/trends in the industry? How have you adapted your writing to meet the current cravings of your fans and new readers?
Celia: I write what I love and then hope that readers love what I write! In reality, every day is different, the world is in a constant state of change. The best anyone can do is… try their best.
Me: Give me a blurb and a tasty excerpt of your latest best seller. And don’t be afraid to make it hot–my readers love that. ; )
Celia: My most recent awesomesauce, kick arse book is Dragons of Preor: Taulan.
He wants to return to Preor and she wants a job, but you don’t always get what you want.
Lana Cooper is down to her last hundred dollars, has no job, and her clunker of a car has finally clunked out. How has her life become such a cluster of horribleness? Oh, right. A guy. Only she doesn’t get a chance to beg for a job. Nope, one walk along the beach changes everything. Oh, she has a job now… as the mate to a hot, hunky Preor dragon male.
Taulan sen Pavon is anxious to return to his home on Preor. Yes, he’d journeyed to Earth in hopes of finding a human mate, but now… Now he would like to heal in the privacy of his aerie. Wings destroyed and body damaged by an explosion, he has no desire to watch others find joy with their mates while he remains unworthy and alone on a ship filled with thousands. But then he finds Lana. Lana with her alluring smile, sparkling eyes, luscious body, and whose mere presence initiates the Knowing.
Can he live long enough to claim her? Can she see past her father’s prejudice to love him? Both questions are pointless because there are still Preor who despise the joining of humans and dragons. They will stop at nothing to drive a wedge between the races. Including murder.

Kyle's enjoyable first Shifter Rogues paranormal starts fast and never slows down. Wolf shape- shifter Decian Reed may not be the alpha of his Shifter Operations Command (SHOC) black ops team, but he doesn't hesitate to take the lead when accountant Abby Carter, a cougar the team's been monitoring, gets cornered by the secret organization determined to eradicate shifters. His instincts tell him that Abby is vital to their understanding of their rival's plans; more importantly, his attraction and connection to Abby drive him to protect her at all costs. Orphaned as a child, Abby relished her solitary life, particularly after being fostered in Alaska with seal shifters who literally left her to sink or swim. But being on the run with Decian and joining his team make her realize that pack life may be what she's been missing. Despite an emphasis on action, Kyle doesn't sacrifice solid character development, including among other members of SHOC, and the sexual tension between Abby and Decian builds to a satisfying climax. Readers of paranormal romance will look forward to future installments. Agent: Holly Root, Root Literary. (Apr.)

Book Review: 'Waking Up Were' by Celia Kyle
WERE
What a cute and sexy story! I laughed and giggled at the heroine’s internal dialogue. With such phrases as “Go team furry!” and mentions of butter cream frosting and cake, there’s such a lighthearted tone to this tale, even when the claws and fangs come out to do serious wolf protection stuff, I had no worries that the book would go dark. The force of nature that was Brenna wouldn’t allow for it.
This novelette was the perfect size for me to enjoy while I had an hour or two to fill. I wanted something breezy, enjoyable, entertaining yet sexy and steamy and I got all of that from reading Waking up Were. I was left feeling happy and satisfied by the end.
Yes, things happen kind of fast in the story, relationship wise, but that makes perfect sense since it is a short. And, since the author slid in the fact that Declan and Brenna knew each other for a good length of time previously, it made the pace of their accelerated relationship more believable. The paranormal aspect certainly sealed it.
For erotic romance readers, this book is on the light side. It has plenty to satisfy but the sex scenes do not take two or three pages to describe. The author gave me just the right amount and balanced it wonderfully with Brenna’s coming to terms with her now being a werewolf, and the fact that her yummy boss, Declan, is not only a wolf but is determined to claim her as his own. That push pull was further complicated by the demands of her own horny wolf. I grinned a lot while reading even while appreciating the heat between them.
Waking up Were is a rollicking good time and I’m really glad I picked it to read. Ms. Kyle has a reputation for clever quips and cute sayings throughout her books and this one is no exception. It’s light, it’s fast paced and, it’s romantic and fun at the same time. This is the kind of story a reader picks if they want to just sit back and be entertained for a bit. I recommend Waking up Were for that reason and more.

Danger shouldn't be this sexy...
Cougar shifter Abby Carter always plays it safe. That's why she's an accountant--no excitement, no danger, and no cocky alpha males. She loves her quiet life, but fate has other plans. When Abby uncovers the shady dealings of an anti-shifter organization, she'll have to trust the too-sexy-for-her-peace-of-mind werewolf Declan Reed... or end up six feet under.
Declan Reed is starting over. After two years with Shifter Operations Command, it's time to put his past behind him. Now Declan is the only thing standing between the gorgeous Abby and an early grave, and if he's going to have any chance of keeping her alive, he'll have to embrace the darkness he's fought to keep at bay. But first he has to convince Abby that there's no safer place in the world than the arms of a big bad werewolf.
Declan Reed is part of Shifter Operations Command. He was once a killer for hire but put his past behind him and was trying to be a better person. SHOC consisted of the most dangerous men who were trying to do good things, so he was in good company. Declan’s SHOC team is on a job trying to get info to see if a company, FosCo, is involved in feeding money into the shifter hate group, Unified Humanity. While observing the building, Declan sees Abby Carter. She’s an accountant that is doing an audit for FosCo, and Declan can’t seem to keep his eyes off of her. When she digs into an account she was told to stay away from and sees that they are indeed filtering money into UH the owner of FosCo is alerted and Abby’s life seems to be in danger. Declan doesn’t wait around but goes to save her. He ends up taking her and hiding her from everyone – including his team and this makes him a rogue.
Abby isn’t sure what’s going on. She knows that what she found at FosCo is horrible and that people are after her to get the info – she just doesn’t know who to trust. She’s pretty sure that Declan is a good guy but she’s not positive. Despite not knowing about him, she’s still attracted to Declan and doesn’t let a little thing like her life being in danger stop her from showing that attraction. Of course she’s not sure either of them will live to do anything about it in the future.
This was a cute paranormal story. I liked both Abby, Declan and his entire SHOC team. I read this in one sitting as it was a fast read.
Abby was a great character. She was strong – she’d had to be her entire life – and wasn’t about to let Declan boss her around. I loved the fact that she didn’t let anyone push her around. Yes, she was scared at times but she still showed her strength throughout her trials.
Declan was alpha male all the way. He wanted what he wanted and no one was going to stand in his way. He was rough and tough and had been a been a killer for hire – not an ideal background – but he was gentle with Abby and wasn’t afraid to show her his softer side.
Overall the book was a good one and I enjoyed the beginning of this new series.

two-half-stars
The first day of Mia’s new life in Grayslake, Georgia is not going as planned. The house her grandfather left her looks ready to crumble, boxes cover every inch of the floor and—oh—there’s a bear cub in her pantry. It gets worse when the cub’s uncle comes by and busts out his fur and claws while on her front porch. Then it gets loads better because suddenly there’s a hot hunk of badge-wearing werebear on her lawn ready to rescue her. Yum. Of course, he has to ruin things by trying to take the cub out of her hands. Ha! The cub is hers… No ifs, ands, or bears about it.
Werebear Ty can’t seem to get the curvaceous, delectable Mia to understand that, even if she is one-quarter werebear, she isn’t keeping the cub. Ty is the Grayslake Itan, the clan’s leader, and the little werebear is going home with him… Unless it isn’t. It’s her smile. If she’d stop smiling and being gorgeous, his inner-bear would support him and Ty would get his way. But the beast wants to make their woman happy, so it’s perfectly content to let her do as she pleases. Then things change. Threats arise, danger comes close, and Ty demands she return to his den. No ifs, ands, or mates about that.
This is a free download. It started out really strong, but went downhill after a few chapters.
When Mia’s grandfather passed away he left her his house in Grayslake, GA. He was a bear shifter and so is her father, but her mother was human so, though she’s half werebear, she can’t shift. She’s looking to start over and doesn’t want to get tangled up with the local bears. When she finds a bear cub in her pantry and his abusive uncle shows up to claim him, she lands right in the middle of clan business. When the sexy sheriff shows up to help, Mia can’t deny her attraction to him. But she isn’t interested in starting something with anyone, much less the clan’s Itan (leader).
Ty doesn’t believe in happily-forever, but he sure wouldn’t mind doing some happy-right-now with the sexy Mia. His bear is in full agreement, especially after the way she protected the cub. Except it isn’t long before he realizes he wants more from Mia than a causal fling..and he’s willing to do whatever he has to to keep her around.
I think what this book really needed was a strong editor. I liked the first couple chapters where Mia rescued the cub and she and Ty go to know one another, but from there the story got choppy and the characters started waffling too much.
Ty is supposed to be the Itan of the clan, which makes him the leader. He’s supposedly the strongest, toughest bear in the clan, but he didn’t really act like it. He roared a lot, but he let those who served under him walk all over him. There was a plot against him and Mia and he didn’t pursue it. Supposedly Mia didn’t listen to him because she was the exception to the rule, but no one listened to him.
Mia seemed like a strong, independent woman. She didn’t let Ty walk all over her and kept her head when things got crazy. Except they drugged her so she didn’t lose it when things started going bad and she admitted she was close to being hysterical. It wasn’t written that way, but I was supposed to buy it based on what she said?
Eh..if the story had been cleaned up and the inconsistencies taken care of, this would have been a stellar read. As it is, I barely managed to finish it.

MARKED
Three sisters, three dynamic personalities with their own special quirks are summoned to appear at a mating event, but one doesn’t belong there with the other two, or does she? Each story tells the tale of how each lady finds her mates and ends with an epilogue that segues into the next until the final story. These were incredibly fast reads that are highly entertaining and enjoyable.
It’s the paranormal aspect that allows the main characters to go from the initial meeting to ‘hot-to-trot’ within minutes of being in each other’s proximity. I like that the author included a valid reasoning and a tradition that all characters on stage have been tutored and trained in. What I liked is how the author interjected a unique conflict and drama in each one to give the plots teeth and motivation. They all worked for me but especially the last one.
Scarlet’s story sets up the world building and the crux of the story arc. Gabriella’s turn was fascinating because for all her humanness, she turns the tables on her combatant and proves she’s not as weak and discombobulated as she sometimes came across. It was a wonderful surprise. It’s amazing what love will motivate a person to do. Finally, Whitney’s exciting adventure wraps up the trilogy in a grand style because it exposes a deeply hidden lie and blows the lid off of an evil conspiracy. Ms. Kyle saved the best for last.
All the male heroes are hunky, totally alpha and aim to please their women. The author saved all the sexy fun hijinks for later in each novella once the heroine and her heroes have jumped the dramatic hurdles they were confronted with. Sex is the goal but love is the prize.
I enjoyed the dialogue, the settings and the discourse between all the characters in each book. None of them were copies of the other but were unique and special in their own ways. Erotic romance readers will thrill to all the three-way action but none of it would have worked without the wonderful plots they were couched in. Yes, they are short but Ms. Kyle focused on giving readers the best experience in the quickest amount of time. So, if a reader can only read a story a day, the enjoyment can be spread out. As for me, I couldn’t stop, didn’t want to stop until I read all three, which meant 1 A.M. Ouch.
The Alpha Marked series was a readaholic’s treat. I had a lot of fun meeting Scarlet, Gabriella and Whitney and their mates and commend Ms. Kyle on giving me a memorable reading experience. I do so love a good growly alpha, or two.

BEARS
This tale has it all – sexy were-bears, a bit of action, bad guys, laugher and goofy quips all wrapped up with a romance story that made me very happy.
Ty and Mia are great together. I enjoyed how they initially fought it, then see-sawed between driving each other nuts while accepting small pieces of proof of their rightness as a couple, one delicious revelation at a time.
I liked the world building, the dialogue, the atmosphere and the relationship between Mia and her dad. I also liked that the author surprised me with hidden layers and depths of her characters. It made up for the speediness of Ty’s manipulations in getting Mia into his house and into his bed. True, the heroine put up a good fight and made Ty work for it, which I appreciated, but there was a quickness to the process that seemed rushed and a tad unrealistic. Then again, this is a paranormal romance and bears aren’t exactly patient creatures with social graces so actually, that impatience of his was part of Ty’s charm.
The bad guys are bad on various levels. I liked that Ms. Kyle stated matter-of-factly the damage that was done to one of the betrayed bad guys. I didn’t need to read graphic descriptions to understand how vile and blood thirsty and deviant they were and I am very glad the author handled it the way she did. It provided drama and suspense and action but the story did not come across as dark. It was a very good balance.
I laughed quite a bit during Ty and Mia’s courtship. Seemed they always got interrupted and Ty’s reaction was funny. There were emotional highlights that stemmed from the little cub and the affectionate term, “little cub”. I won’t say much more than that but it definitely touched my feelings and engaged me and solidified my attachment and caring for the main characters and some of the secondary characters.
I also enjoyed meeting Ty’s brothers. To say they were yummy is an understatement. The author provided just enough character reference to make me very interested in following the brothers to see just what kind of HEA they end up getting. They were a solid hook.
Paranormal romance readers can’t go wrong in giving No Ifs, Ands, or Bears About It a try. It’s quirky, fun, sexy and highly entertaining. I greatly enjoyed this author’s storytelling voice and heartily recommend this to anyone who likes their shifter romances and heroes on the lighter growly side.

Book Review: 'Wanting a Mate' by Celia Kyle and Mina Carter
WANTING
Need a little amusement in your life? Looking for a quick romance to swoon over? Enjoy mothers embarrassing their daughters? How about families that love each other so much they go overboard and cause problems by pulling off over the top stunts in pursuit of protection of their loved ones? Readers get all that in more in this little gem by Ms. Kyle and Ms. Carter. Yes, Wanting a Mate has some sexy hotness within its pages but this story is just plain fun to read. I practically had a smile plastered on my face throughout most of the book. It made me happy.
First I laughed at the term, Mr. Buick, then I giggled at the antics of Chloe’s mom, and just adored the way the heroine was open and accepting of everything about the hero, Holt. I liked that he was a big, bad, scary dude that no one messed with except Chloe. She had no fear of him. It’s that openness and enthusiasm for life that I found charming about their relationship. Holt loved her for who she was, and she him. There were no preconceptions or miscommunications. I think some of that might have been Chloe’s mom’s influence. She wanted grandbabies in the worst way and her support of her daughter’s willingness to mate with a shifter might have made the heroine more open to the possibility than most. Her mom reminded me of a 60s love guru – peace, love, and all that. To top it all off, her mom showed up in the most unexpected places and it gave me fits of giggles. I’ve read many a story about a manipulative parent but Choe’s mom broke the mold.
Wanting a Mate is a crowd pleaser; it really is. It’s quirky, lighthearted, and optimistic, and the sexy shenanigans between Holt and Chloe were well written and entertaining scenes. Mating is a growly, sweaty and sensual business but the authors still managed to imbue those passion filled moments with humor and charm. This is such an awesome story even though it moves at a fast clip. It’s not deep, but it’s huge on appeal and the relationship between the hero and heroine is engaging. I’m a satisfied reader.

QOTE:
On the whole, though, this book is utterly ridiculous and knows it, but not well-written enough to hold that up. If it had been trying to take itself seriously, we might be in the coveted F+ territory, but alas, we are not. If it had been well-written enough to take the ridonkadonk to new levels of ridonk, I'd be all over it! Mostly, I'm sad at missed opportunities. As I wrote this review, I got more and more sad.

Title: Hedging His Bets
Author: Celia Kyle and Mina Carter
Publication Info: Summerhouse Publishing April 2013
ISBN: 9781301234332
Genre: Paranormal
Book Hedging His Bets - a hedgehog totally is on the cover I would like you to know that I hate each and every one of you. And I really hate who ever it was that put this book in my path, because I KNOW it was RHG bait and you KNOW I can’t resist that so…
Oh my god, the pain.
He’s a fucking WERE HEDGEHOG. LIKE. AS IN. A SMALL SOMEWHAT PRICKLY THING THAT WUFFLES AROUND IN HEDGES.
ONLY A WERE.
I can’t even.
As far as plots go….there really isn’t one. Honey (yes, really) owns a bar, and has been in an antagonistic relationship with Blake, who is seriously over compensating for the fact that he’s a WERE-HEDGEHOG by being a bad-ass biker dude who wears leather and beats up any guy that looks at Honey at all. He wants her, she secretly wants him (and fantasizing about him while masturbating, which he finds out because he followed her home one night and snuck into her house).
She also adopts hedgehogs.
Of course she does.
Anyway, Honey has an employee in the bar, Katie, who is also a female were-hedgehog (and Honey knows that she is, so we are spared the whole “What do you mean there are were-things and YOU TURN INTO A FUCKING HEDGEHOG” conversation). Blake convinces Katie to beat the shit out him in were-form so that Honey will take him in and take care of him so he can get into her house that way….
He doesn’t factor in that she’d take him to the vet, which results in getting his temperature taken rectally (which he totally deserved) and then she takes him home and arranges a date with the vet. The vet then says to a buddy of his, while Blake is listening, that he’s going out with a fat chick who is obviously desperate for sex and will totally put out. Blake pees on the vet and chews on his fingers, and the vet throws him against a wall. (This kiboshes the date quite neatly.)
Honey lets Blake sleep on her bed (as a hedgehog still). But he turns back human in the middle of the night and they start making out…. until she wakes up and it’s all awkward. She throws him out, and he promptly gets into a motorcycle accident and Honey… brings him back into her house to nurse him back to health. But they still want to bang eachother, but neither of them know the other wants also wants the banging and Honey is all sneaking into the shower to jerk off….
And then they finally end up in bed and it’s perfect because you KNOW were-hedgehogs are able to BRING IT, and that’s basically the end of the book.
Here’s the thing: I think that the book knows how ridiculous it is. It has a “I am not taking this seriously, so you shouldn’t, either” tone that yes, alpha were-hedgehogs are a silly concept.
[Blake] grumbled low in his throat as she turned the car off and climbed out, being careful not to jostle him. On a normal day, he’d gripe about that; just because he was a hedgie didn’t mean he was that delicate. But after the experience with the vet tech from hell… Just let the bastard try and euthanize a werehedgehog. Blake would show him exactly what hell was.
That is the correct tone to take with this premise. I was deeply concerned that this book thought it was the shit, and once I decided that it, like Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters (IN 3D) knew what it was and made no apologies for it, my reading experience was improved.
But the thing about writing a book with a knowingly ridiculous premise is that you have to be a good writer to pull it off (Hansel and Gretel: Witchhunters (IN 3D!) was awesome at being the precise type of movie it was). And they aren’t. I did a dramatic reading for Alina, one of my podcast co-hosts, and she didn’t even make it through two paragraphs before she made me stop. The writing is just awkward and clunky.
Blake with his tight leathers that outlined everything he had to offer, from a large package to lots of long, lean muscle. He even had the cliche bad boy tattoos on his biceps. Tattoos she’d like to lick all over… when she wasn’t pissed at him starting fights, that is….
…All right, truth be told, she wouldn’t mind a roll in the hay if she could be sure it was no strings attatched. Except she had a feeling that Blake wanted a little more than a straight-forward friendly fuck. He was one of those, she internally shuddered, long-term kind of guys despite his outward short-term attitude.
It’s never clear why Honey has this problem with Blake. She wants him, but she’s sure he doesn’t want her, except that she knows he does, but she only wants him for a FWB situation, except maybe not, and she thinks he goes for skinny blondes anyway, and not curvy chicks like her, so he's not really interested… none of this makes any sense. You need to have consistency in character, even when the book is silly. ESPECIALLY when the book is silly, or it can’t sustain itself.
While it might have been fun to see Honey come to terms with the existence of were-hedgehogs, I can appreciate the decision to make it clear that she already knows about them, and has come to terms with that paradigm shift. Now she only has to deal with the fact that Blake is one (although it wasn't clear to me if he knew that she knew that shifters are a thing.) (Look, it's a very knowledgable cast, okay.)
While I, as a woman who is not small, liked seeing a heroine who is pointedly not skinny, Honey's constant obsession with the size of her butt or how guys only go for skinny chicks was tiresome. Yeah, okay, it's true a lot of us do that some of the time, but that doesn't mean I want to read about it.
I do feel like the authors understand and love hedgehogs, which added a level of sincerity. (I admit that my experiences with hedgehogs are holding one at a zoo one time and watching youtube videos of hedgies taking baths, which are amazing and adorable and worth every second.)

Romance Paranormal
ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE is Book three in Celia Kyle's "Grayslake" series. ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE is my favorite book in this series so far. Keen Abrams proves to be the most cuddly and sexy brother in his werebear family. Keen might be a bear shifter and Trista Scott might be part hyena shifter, but I love the feeling in this book that it's them against the world. A lot of the conflict in ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE centers around Trista having Hyena shifter blood in her, thus associating her with one of the most hated groups in the shifter world. The unfairness of that is gigantic on so many levels.
I like Trista because I like strong female characters and she is incredibly resilient. She's had to deal with so much in her life -- the murder of her mother; running from various groups, including her hyena relations, that want her dead; and the general disgust and prejudice from other shifters who just don't like hyenas. In spite of all that, she doesn't come across as a bitter woman and I found her very easy to like. She is slow, at first, to embrace the connection she feels with Keen. Being forced to lead a somewhat nomadic lifestyle and having to constantly fight for things makes her reluctant to lean on someone and rely on them for help. The chemistry between them is fantastic. However, it's more than just a sexual compatibility. They are able to find in each other the love and acceptance that they have trouble finding anywhere else. So, in addition to the smoking hot scenes between them, there are just as many sweet and tender moments in ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE.
There are many sources of conflict in ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE, but I think they all really worked in the story without cluttering it up or taking anything away from the romance. The enemies seem to come from within and from outside. Most of Trista's enemies spring from the sins of her half-brother and biological father. Keen is in the perfect time in his life to be able to relate on some level to Trista's feeling of isolation. He grew up in a large family and community, but as the youngest brother, he felt marginalized to a certain extent. The friction has only increased between his brothers and himself now that he's older. His sense of identity in his clan is thrown into question. I loved how he and Trista stuck together and bonded over these conflicts. This has definitely been my favorite book and couple in this series so far.
ROARING UP THE WRONG TREE is a super sexy romance full of raw emotion and complex characters. I look forward to the next exciting installment in this Grayslake series!

SUMMARY
What should Trista do when faced with a hunky werebear who can’t decide if he wants to kill her or screw her?
Half-hyena, Trista has spent years rotating between Grayslake, Redby, and Boyne Falls. When the Grayslake Itan—the local clan’s werebear leader—orders a purge of all hyenas, she finds herself fighting to hold onto the hand-to-mouth life she’s created. Her carefully built existence is threatened further when a gorgeous werebear strides into her life and demands not just her heart, but her very soul. She’ll think about it, but not until her shift ends at seven.
Keen seems like a happy-go-lucky, sex-and-sin werebear, but that’s nowhere near the truth. In reality, his inner- animal wants to go on a bloody rampage and kill half of Grayslake—just because it can. After that, it wants to claim the seductive, curvaceous half-hyena female Keen can’t get out of his head. The animal doesn’t care that most bears wouldn’t mind a little hyena tartare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nope, it peers at her through Keen’s human eyes and has one thought: mate.
When push comes to shove, Keen has to decide if he would rather have the family he was born with, or Trista—the woman who makes him realize that true happiness comes in a lush, hyena-shaped package.

Goodreads
Wolf’s Mate is the first book in a new series titled Shifter Rogues. If you love alpha shifters then this is a story that will satisfy you! Declan Reed is no good guy, in fact he is a mercenary shifter who has killed a number of people before he was brought in to work for Shifter Operational Command. Not that working for the SHOC has stopped him from his favorite past-time since he and his fellow team members were actually recruited for their ferociousness as well as their tactical skills.
Declan is not one of the “good guys” and he has never tried to be one either. Ever since he made a fateful choice he has been on the road he set himself on with no regrets until the day he set eyes on a cougar shifter. From the moment he saw her something changed in him fundamentally. Even if he did not understand it his inner wolf did. She was his to protect and Declan took this idea very seriously, even if he was not honest with himself about what he was doing. All he knew was that there was more to this “job” than he was willing to admit.
Abby Carter may have been interested in a “play it safe” lifestyle after her family had been killed by Unified Humanity and she had been sent to live with strangers, but when she stumbled upon some information about the Unified Humanity organization she threw her safe ways out the window. She knew that she needed to get the information she found to the shifter council so that they could destroy the Unified Humanity organization. Unfortunately for Abby, there were safeguards in place that alerted the men in charge if the information was uncovered and before she could do anything vital she was confronted and the jig was up.
Luckily, Declan and his team had been monitoring Abby’s company and Declan had been in the right place at the right time. Although, that is not how Abby saw it and she used his arrival as the perfect distraction for her getaway. Too bad though that Declan was more interested in her than the men who confronted her and he pursued her despite direct commands not to and then captured her but refused to hand her over when he was commanded to. Declan was driven to protect Abby and he was determined to do this at any cost but Abby only saw him as a potential hostile that was dangerous to her. Together Abby and Declan would have to determine who was friend or foe and who they could trust when it seemed betrayal was around every corner.
There was much in the way of sexual tension between Declan and Abby. Their inner shifters knew what the score was but both Declan and Abby had other opinions on the matter. I adored the inner banter between the main characters and their counterparts. It was hilarious! There were many times where the banter in this book, either between characters or internally, made laugh out loud. I also appreciated that things took time to occur between Declan and Abby, it really turned up the romance aspect! There was plenty of danger to be had in this story and a betrayal that made me very wary of a certain character. I really enjoyed reading Wolf’s Mate and I am eagerly anticipating the next book in this series. I would highly recommend this book to all fans of paranormal romance!!
