SIDELIGHTS
Jorge Partida is a writer, speaker, healer, activist, and psychologist. Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, he immigrated to the United States as a boy. He spent the rest of his childhood in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Partida earned his doctoral degree from Argosy University Chicago. In 1996, he joined the Chicago School of Professional Psychology as an associate professor. Partida went on to work as the director of behavioral health and addiction treatment at Chicago’s St. Elizabeth Hospital. In 1998, he became the director of the Psy.D. program at John F. Kennedy University. Partida later served as the deputy director of behavioral health and the director of substance abuse services at the San Fracisco Department of Public Health. He was able to work on behalf of the cause of environment as the executive director for the United States Green Building Council in Los Angeles, California. Partida has gone on to direct aspects of treatment at the rehabilitation facilities, Arcadia Malibu and Alo House. He has appeared on radio and television programs and has created and facilitated workshops. Partido is known for using and promoting the efficacy of treatments based on shamanism and other Latin American healing traditions.
A Week of Awakening
In 2011, Partida released his first book, A Week of Awakening: A Practical Guide to Personal Transformation. In this volume, he speaks to people who have lost faith in themselves and lost hope for their future.
Partida offers lessons on how to control one’s mind. He suggests that by following certain principles, one can regain power over one’s life and live more fully.
The Promise of the Fifth Sun
In The Promise of the Fifth Sun: Ancestral Journey of Self-Discovery, Partida discusses ancient holistic healing traditions. He includes information about the Toltec and Aztec civilizations and shares some of their healing techniques and beliefs regarding destiny and faith. He suggests that Western colonization nearly destroyed their spiritual system, but some traditions have continued to be used. Partida goes on to explain how to incorporate the Toltec and Aztec beliefs into one’s personal life. Among his suggestions is to focus on mindfulness and gratitude and tune out the opinions of others and other social pressures.
A Kirkus Reviews critic offered a favorable assessment of The Promise of the Fifth Sun. The critic suggested: “Overall, the smoothly flowing book takes a complex topic and breaks it down into understandable and enriching ideas, producing a self-improvement guide that teaches rather than preaches.” The same critic described the volume as “a successful exploration of myths and cultural norms.”

Jorge was my direct supervisor for several years. Without question, he was the best boss that I've ever had. Ever compassionate, he held us all accountable to the highest standards through his integrity and example so that we did our best because that's what he brought out in all of us effortlessly.
He inspired, led by example, and elevated the Program in ways that expanded for me my whole understanding of what Psychology could be and should be. He blended his rich life experience with a strong theoretical knowledge in order to make Psychology a profession to be proud of.

Dr. Jorge Partida: Clinical Director and Director of Family Treatment
Meet Dr. Jorge Partida,
Our Silverlake Clinical Director and Family Program Director. These two titles merely scratch the surface of Dr. Jorge’s role at Alo House. He has been a critical part of our team for four years, and in addition to his work in the clinical sector with doctorate students, he oversees psychological and neuropsychological testing and the family treatment program.
Dr. Jorge Partida: Clinical Director and Director of Family Treatment
Education
Before receiving his doctorate, Dr. Jorge worked with addicted youth and families in Chicago as a Director for Families First, a program of the Department of Children and Family services. He also served the role of Director of Social Serves at Latino Youth, an alternative high school and social service organization.
Following these positions and a lengthy education, Dr. Jorge has worked as the Director of Behavioral Health and Addiction Treatment at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Chicago, and Director of Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. It was these positions that eventually led him to Alo House Recovery Centers.
In addition to his years of traditional education, Dr. Jorge has also done work as a Curandero, or a traditional healer. Through this experience he has come to know the importance of connecting to the unseen energies and forces around us, an essential part of holistic healing.
This connection reminds us of our sacred place and strong center that can help us overcome challenges such as addiction. Using this experience and knowledge, Dr. Jorge wrote, “The Promise of The Fifth Sun and A Week of Awakening,” a book integrating psychology with native healing traditions to form an easy to use self-help approach.
Background
Dr. Jorge was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and immigrated to Chicago at nine years of age.
Dr. Jorge Partida Family Background
As the eldest of six children, it became his duty to care for his younger siblings, and also to take care of his dad who struggled with alcoholism for most of Dr. Jorge’s life.
In an attempt to help, Dr. Jorge brought his father to an inpatient program that he oversaw while working as the Director of Behavioral Health and Addiction Treatment at St. Elizabeth Hospital. After witnessing his father’s humiliation and shame, he vowed not to interfere again.
Today, Dr. Jorge’s father has returned to farming in Mexico, a place where he feels welcome and accepted. In the years since, his depression has lifted and he has recovered from alcoholism. It wasn’t AA or any other program that gave Dr. Jorge’s father back his sobriety, it was a feeling of community and a return to the earth.
Through this experience Dr. Jorge developed a new attitude about addiction and substance use, one that we embrace at Alo House: That connection is the key to recovery.
In addition to watching his father struggle with alcoholism, Dr. Jorge has lost many friends to addiction and has seen how a party atmosphere can quickly become deadly.
He has witnessed the devastating impact of trauma and isolation that comes with substance use disorders and strongly believes that addiction treatment is one of the most effective and impactful ways to reclaim a life.
It was this conviction learned through personal experience that brought him to a career in recovery. While he acknowledges that overcoming addiction is not easy, he knows that those who are brave enough to do the hard work of personal transformation will make giant leaps toward their purpose and passion, and he takes great pride in being a part of the process.
It is his mission to help our clients embrace change and overcome stagnation and the pain of the past. He believes that those struggling with addiction are merely trying to find a remedy for trauma and pain, and have turned to a method that is ineffective and more costly than the relief it provides.
“I believe there are many different paths than can lead to recovery. What is most effective is what works for you.”
– Dr. Jorge Partida, Alo House Recovery Centers

Partida, Jorge THE PROMISE OF THE FIFTH SUN BalboaPress (Indie Nonfiction) $35.95 8, 25 ISBN: 978-1-5043-8619-7
In this debut holistic book about human rituals, myths, and ancestral history, a clinical psychologist infuses modern life lessons with ancient ones.
Beginning with a history lesson about the ancient Aztec and Toltec civilizations, Partida delves into these ancient worlds and the ways they were altered forever by the intrusion and oppression of Western cultures. As the author explains, "By controlling the native culture's mythology, rituals and faith, the dominant culture had an ability to control the destiny, the minds and bodies of those who were now servants and workers." The volume then looks at how history and myth affect present-day individual experiences--the conceptions about one's ancestors and the impact of dominant cultures in the subconscious valuation of the self. The author asserts: "A dominant society assigns its expectations to every individual within its confines. Each individual's worth is determined by" his or her proximity and relationship "to wealth and power." Partida encourages readers to sift through the noise of lore and the conflicting information received from family members, the media, and social messages and reconnect with the human values that produce fulfilling and abundant lives: gratitude, awareness, and mindfulness. The book helps readers become aware of both the conscious and subconscious myths that drive perceptions about race, ethnicity, gender, age, and other constructs. Weaving psychology with anthropology, the author reveals the psychological impact of these human stories so ingrained in readers' thinking: "Internalized oppression occurs when we become just like the power that we feel is controlling and directing our lives. When you feel abused or mistreated, you begin to act like the persons or institutions you feel inflict harm on you." The book goes further than simply revealing problematic myths and examines lessons and practices that readers can implement to find healthier perspectives and self-valuations. The author suggests exercises such as defining fears
