Retired professor J.B. Marsden made her debut as a romance novelist in 2018 with Reclaiming Yancy. Marsden, who served for about two decades as a professor of rural health systems research, now lives in a rural location herself; her family home, where she grew up, explained a contributor to the Sapphire Books website, “overlooks quiet, verdant fields in the Mississippi valley of central Illinois.”
Like her creator, Yancy Delaney is a country woman who is also intimately involved in the profession of health care. Reclaiming Yancy is the story of a Colorado rancher who manages a rural health agency and the attraction she feels for the doctor who maintains and runs the agency. “Yancy Delaney is a woman grieving past losses, escaping her past by running from any commitment—except to her beloved horses and her work at Valley View,” stated T.B. Markinson in I Heart Lesfic. As the novel begins Yancy has just lost her partner, Tricia, to breast cancer. She reacts to her loss in a variety of self-destructive ways: she changes her eating patterns (becoming unhealthily thin) and begins a series of one-night stands with strangers who also put her health at risk. Her best friend Roxie takes her to task for the bad habits she has developed and the reputation she has earned. “I found Yancy’s treatment of other women borderline … harassment,” asserted a Lez Review Books contributor, “and in some situations unrealistic.” Her mother Nina, a prominent socialite, is also put off by Yancy’s reputation and by her declining health. In the end, “Yancy’s missteps and risk-taking may finally be catching up with her,” Markinson continued, “resulting in an injury to herself and a path of broken hearts left in her dust.”
Yancy’s situation begins to change with the arrival of the doctor who intends to fix the problems Yancy, in her despair, has allowed to emerge at Valley View. Dr. Genevieve Lambert, the new medical director of the system of clinics, initially is repulsed by Yancy’s reputation as a womanizer and her poor diet. She is also concerned that a relationship with Yancy may make her seem unprofessional—especially in the small-town and rural areas where the clinic has its offices. Over time, however, she comes to recognize an attraction to the lean, grieving rancher that she cannot deny. “Crackling chemistry between the two women,” stated a Publishers Weekly reviewer, “leads to a passionate relationship.”

Her writing studio overlooks quiet, verdant fields in the Mississippi Valley of Central Illinois, where she lives with her wife, her most avid supporter. Joey loves writing, reading, photography, cards, golf, swimming, biking, and being outdoors at her farm.

JB "Joey" Marsden wrote her first short story at age ten, but, needing to make a living, spent many years producing academic tomes that no one enjoyed reading. Now, having published novels, she has realized her childhood dream.
JB lives on her family farm in the beautiful Mississippi River valley of western Illinois, where she grew up. Before that, she lived in urban areas in upstate New York, Michigan, and Kentucky. Her wife and sisters surround her with loving support and compete with her in rousing card games. Aside from writing, Joey enjoys reading, outdoor sports and activities, and classic movies. Even though she can be found most often in the quiet of rural living, she travels for work and fun both in the U.S. and abroad.

Debut author Marsden misses the mark with this angsty contemporary. Rancher Mary Anne "Yancy" Delaney is mourning her girlfriend, Trisha, who died of breast cancer. Unable to face another serious relationship, Yancy becomes the queen of one-night stands. Then Dr. Genevieve Lambert arrives to take the post of medical director at the rural Colorado clinic founded by Yancy's family. At first, Gen is hesitant about getting involved with a womanizer, especially in a small town. But crackling chemistry between the two women leads to a passionate relationship that might just become a romance. Marsden's basic premise is solid, but the book's characterizations--of Yancy, Gen, and the supporting characters, including Yancy's best friend, Roxie, and her mother, Nina--fall flat. There are several hints that Yancy might have very serious health issues, but the payoff is minimal, making the frequent foreshadowing feel unfair to the reader. The tender ending will tug at readers' heartstrings, but it doesn't make up for the novel's flaws. (Mar.)

This is a story about Yancy Delaney, a rancher who is dealing with the bereavement of her partner and brother in a destructive way. She takes too many risks at work, her eating habits are unhealthy and her love life is an infinite series of one night stands. In her capacity of Board Director of her family’s rural clinics, she meets Dr. Gen Lambert. There is an initial attraction but will Yancy change her reckless ways for someone who’s worth it?
‘Reclaiming Yancy’ is a debut novel and unfortunately the reader can tell. Written in third person from the point of view of both main characters, there is a good amount of telling but not showing which is one my pet peeves in literature though I accept that other readers might enjoy. With respect to the main characters, I found Yancy’s treatment of other women borderline with harrasment and in some situations unrealistic. I couldn’t feel the chemistry between her and Gen at all. Additionally, some of the secondary characters are a bit stereotyped and flat.
Overall an ok debut read if you like a good amount of drama. 3 stars
