SIDELIGHTS

An avowed lover of books, F.M. Boughan is a novelist, dancer, and dance instructor specializing in the Bollywood style of dancing. Boughan is also the author of a fantasy series featuring an initial book that is a reworking of the fairy tale Cinderella. In Boughan’s tale, the Cinderella character, named Ellison, learns how to control evil spirits. Boughan came up with the idea for her debut novel, Cinderella, Necromancer, after reading a book titled Magic in the Middle Ages, which included information on a secret Catholic clergy in Europe during the fifteenth century. Boughan went on to read another book by the same author focusing on a fifteenth-century book of magic spells and incantations. “One day when I was thinking about fairy tales and how much I wished that the “heroines” of those tales had a chance to fight back for themselves, instead of relying on princes and fairy godmothers to save them … well, somehow my brain mashed the two things together, and here we are,” Boughan told an OMG Books and More Books website contributor.

Cinderella, Necromancer features sixteen-year-old Ellison, or Ella, whose mother has died years earlier. Her father, however, has just remarried to a woman with two daughters with vicious natures. Except for her father and brother Edward, Ella does not care much for her new family, especially since they essentially treat her as a servant. They do not treat Edward much better. One day, while wandering through her father’s mansion, she comes across a secret passage where she discovers a an ancient manual on necromancy. Intrigued, Ella wonders if the tome could possibly help her fight back against her stepmother and stepsisters.

As Ella studies the guide to necromancy, circumstancess in the home get worse for her and her brother, who suddenly becomes increasingly sick. Meanwhile, Ella meets the handsome, generous Prince William while visiting her mother’s graveside. Prince William’s family later announces they are going to hold a festival with all single, eligible women encouraged to attend. Like the fairy tale of Cinderella, Ella’s mean stepmother and stepsisters try sabotaging her attempt to go to the festival. In Boghan’s retelling, however, Ella decides to use what she has learned about necromancy to fight back, making her stepmother and others suffer. However, in the meantime, Edward continues to turn increasingly ill, leading Ella to wonder if her revenge might have turned her into a monster who cannot really control the spirits she has conjured up to help her get her revenge.

“Boughan weaves a tale so mysterious and magical, harrowing and hopeful, with such deliciously dark villains, readers almost forget this is a retelling,” wrote a Publishers Weekly contributor. A Darque Dreamer Reads website contributor commented: “If you want to satisfy both the fairy tale lover and horror fan in yourself, then look no further than Cinderella, Necromancer!”

    Cinderella, Necromancer by F.M. Boughan
    Publication Date: September 5, 2017
    Publisher: Month9Books

Darkness can only be controlled by those with the darkest of hearts.

Ellison lost her mother at an early age. Now, sixteen, her father has found love again. He’s happy and doesn’t quite notice that Ellison does not get along with his new wife or her vicious daughters.

When Ellison discovers a necromantic tome while traveling the secret passages of her father’s mansion, she wonders if it could be the key to her eventual freedom.

Until then, she must master her dark new power, even as her stepmother makes her a servant in her own home. And when her younger brother falls incurably ill, Ellison will do anything to ease his pain, including falling prey to her stepmother’s and stepsisters’ every whim and fancy.

Stumbling into a chance meeting with Prince William during a secret visit to her mother’s grave feels like a trick of fate when her stepmother refuses to allow Ellison to attend a palace festival where she might see him once more.

But what if Ellison could see the kind and handsome prince again? What if she could attend the festival? What if she could have everything she’s ever wanted and deserved by conjuring spirits to take revenge on her cruel stepmother? And what if she actually liked watching her stepmother suffer?

As Ellison’s power grows, she loses control over the evil spirits meant to do her bidding. And as they begin to exert their own power over Ellison, it becomes harder to tell whether it is she or her stepmother who is the true monster.

    INTERVIEW:

    1) What inspired you to add necromancy to the classic tale of cinderella?

About a year or so before I sat down to write Cinderella, Necromancer, a family member gave me a book at Christmas called Magic in the Middle Ages, written by a professor at Northwestern University. The book has a chapter that talks about the dark magic underground of the Catholic clergy in 15th-century Europe. This led me to another book by the same professor that is dedicated to a specific 15th-century grimoire.

One day when I was thinking about fairy tales and how much I wished that the “heroines” of those tales had a chance to fight back for themselves, instead of relying on princes and fairy godmothers to save them… well, somehow my brain mashed the two things together, and here we are!

    2) Which character was the most fun writing? The hardest?

I had the most fun writing Ella’s best friend, Liesl. I love her so much, and I kind of wish I could write a spin-off book just for myself about Liesl’s adventures in being, well, Liesl—helping to run a small business, brushing off suitors because she’s too busy for their nonsense, eating great food because it makes her happy… it doesn’t get much better than that!

The hardest to write was Edward, Ella’s little brother. I don’t spend a lot of time around very young children, so I had to really listen hard to conversations around me, observe (non-creepily!) how children behaved and talked to their siblings, and do a bit of research online. Ultimately, my research came down to “kids are smarter than people give them credit for,” so I tried to include a bit of banter between Edward and Ella in the story… uh, before everything in their world falls apart, that is.

    3) Do you see any possible spinoffs to this story?

I actually handed in a sequel to my publisher earlier this year. Surprise! So, we’ll have to see how that shakes out. If you thought Cinderella, Necromancer was dark, uh… the sequel takes it to a whole new level. Or at least that’s where it’s at before edits, so you never know!

And like I said, I’d totally write Liesl fanfic for my own work. I wish we could be friends! Haha

    4) What else are you writing?

I’m always working on something, but right now I’m between projects and in the process of plotting out ideas for new work. I like to let ideas marinate in my brain for a bit before starting the outline process, and usually that involves randomly making notes here and there as things come to me. I may do another dark fairy tale retelling, but we’ll see!

    5) Any advice to aspiring authors?

I know that people like to say “don’t let your dreams be dreams!” in a joking way, but it’s actually good advice! If you have a story to tell, tell it. You owe it to the world, and to yourself, to create what’s been put in your heart to create. It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re at or what your background is or what other people tell you to do, the simple fact is that if you have a story that’s bursting to get out, let it out. Don’t deprive us of what you have to offer! It’s not going to be easy, mind you—being an artist of any kind almost never is—but persistence and patience and getting back up when you get knocked down is all part of the process. You can do it!

This "Cinderella" retelling stars motherless Ellison--Ella for short. After her widowed father remarries, Ella finds herself now burdened with a dastardly stepfamily that begins to treat her as a servant. A secret passageway leads her to an ancient necromancy manual that grants her the powers to fight back against the abuse she suffers and that threatens her younger brother, Edward. Seeking solace at her mother's grave one morning, Ella finds herself face to face with the generous, attractive, and heroic Prince William. But of course, when the royal family announces a festival to which all eligible women are invited, her stepsisters sabotage her. Here the story truly diverges from the familiar. To exact revenge on her stepfamily, Ella uses the necromancy tome to conjure spirits to do her bidding--but at great cost. As her brother grows more ill and frail by the day, Ella must look within to see if the monster she should fear is her stepmother or herself. Set in what feels like a largely white 19th-century alternative Europe, the tale is told in deliciously Gothic prose. Although the ending is drawn out a few beats too long and has a preachy overtone, what comes before is enough to keep readers glued for the resolution. Boughan weaves a tale so mysterious and magical, harrowing and hopeful, with such deliciously dark villains, readers almost forget this is a retelling rather than a story of original beginnings. This isn’t just an “inspired by” tale. Cinderella, Necromancer is a retelling, with a character named Ella, a stepmother and stepsisters, and a prince seeking a bride. But this is slightly different from other retellings you may have come across because this particular one happens to be influenced by real 15th century German necromancy. And because of this, Boughan takes us back to the real darkness that existed in the original fairytales (not the Disney version). Except this is far darker, with demons and maggots and the like! It’s not often you find so much gore in a retelling without there being zombies involved.

Retellings can be a tricky beast. Authors need to decide how similar they want their story to be to the original, and which details to change. For the first 10-15%, I struggled to get into the story because it was a bit too much like every Cinderella story I’d heard before. However, things started to get interesting as Ellison began to explore her dark magic more, and soon I was under a spell. (Haha see what I did there?)

I think the same can apply to the characters. It took me a little while to warm up to them, as they were a bit too predictable at first. But I slowly became interested in them. I never really connected on an emotional level, which is a shame, but I could appreciate elements about them. What this book did well was play with the idea of good and evil, and how it’s not as simple as we might like to think.

Overall, however, I did enjoy this take on Cinderella, especially with the historical magic and unexpected twists here and there. If you like retellings, the paranormal, and grey area characters, then give Cinderella, Necromancer a go!

    MY REVIEW

Cinderella, Necromancer is an interesting dark retelling of Cinderella and I immensely enjoyed reading it. I’m actually not fan of Cinderella retellings but when the author asked for an honest review for this book, I couldn’t say no because I loved the synopsis and it’s really a strange combination that I’ve never read before. It’s a dark version of Cinderella. Even though I had few issues, the story is definitely refreshing to read and I have to say that it was a pretty good start for a debut. I really liked the plot, the setting and the wonderful writing style. I’m so glad it wasn’t an exact rip off of the original tale and I liked how the author incorporated the 15th century German Necromancy aspects into the tale.

The story follows sixteen year old Ellison aka Ella who lost her mother when she was young leaving her brother and her motherless. When her father finds happiness in a new wife, she can’t forgive him. If that wasn’t enough, It seems like her new step mother has two evil daughters who are going to be her new step sisters. When her father suddenly leaves the town for some unknown business, he leaves her and her brother in her step mother’s care. After her father leaves the house, her step mother finally shows her true face by replacing her sweet act. Ella soon changed from a noble lady to a servant in her own house. She was forced to serve her step mother and her new evil step sisters. One day, when she gets locked in her room for disobedience, she finds a secret passage that leads to her father’s secret room where she finds a key and a book of Conjuring which holds secrets to dark magic. When she visits her mother’s grave, she meets the alluring prince William who thinks that she’s a servant because of her dirty attire and he warns her not to roam around at night because of the new terrors that attacking their kingdom. Ellison wants to meet the prince once again in the palace festival but her new step mother refuses her request. To have everything she deserved, Ella uses the book of conjuring to raise spirits without knowing the consequences of her actions which later brings huge chaos.

Ellison is a wonderful protagonist and I’m so glad that she wasn’t another damsel in distress character who needs her prince charming to save her. She’s strong, witty, stubborn, spunky, and fun character who absolutely loves her little brother. I really liked Ellison’s little brother who is quite adorable. He enjoys her sister’s company more than others and he always looks forward to their story telling time. The relationship between Ellison and her brother is portrayed really well in the plot and we can pretty much see how much she cares for her brother. I also liked Prince William, he is a fun character who also harbors secrets of his own which is revealed as the story slowly progresses. Even though William played major part in this book, the whole story is mostly focused on Ellison and her family. The romance between Ellison and William is Okay-ish but I quite enjoyed the banters between them. I also liked Ellison’s step mother and step sister’s characters. I’d love to hate them too! I absolutely loathed them when they blackmailed Ellison by threatening to hurt her brother. The spirits Ellison conjures are totally creepy especially Curson. He’s quite dark and seductive spirit who gave me chills.

The plot is interesting and totally refreshing! To be honest, I was actually bored at the slow beginning but the pace eventually picks up when the night terrors starts around the kingdom. The concept of this book is unique. I pretty much loved the dark and gothic feel to it. When I saw necromancer on the title, I expected some raising the dead from their graves but it’s definitely not that. The twists in the plot really surprised me and I really loved the ending but I think it was a bit rushed. Nonetheless, I liked how everything wrapped up in the end. As for the writing, I loved it! For a debut, the author’s writing style is pretty amazing and totally captivating. There’s not much world building in this book but I enjoyed the whole setting and the atmosphere the author has created.

Overall, it was a good read! The story was much darker than I had expected and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s quite a unique retelling filled with dark magic, witch craft, action, intrigue and light romance.

    Recommend it?

    The Review:
Cinderella Necromancer is a gruesome retelling, perfect for lovers of the macabre! It is both unique, and full of details from the original tale. This one is a true classic in its own, horrifying way.

“Blood spilled down the sides of his face in rivers, streaming from the wounds where the blades carved into his skull.”
Cinderella Necromancer was such a dark, gritty, gruesome tale, and I LOVED it! This one is such a unique retelling compared to others I’ve read. I loved the horrific details in the story and the terrifying plot twists. Who would have thought that such a cute fairy tale could be turned in to something of nightmares? And, this retelling is based off the fact that an ACTUAL book on Necromancy was found in Germany from the 15th century!

“And while I didn’t understand its lure, nor why my simple curiosity had grown to a lusting wonder, in that instant I felt compelled to do as the words instructed.”
The plot seemed to follow the original tale, for the most part. And yet, it was full of surprises. The twist on the character personalities and the plot were extremely entertaining and satisfied the horror lover in me. The time period was portrayed well, and the imagery used was outstanding. I really felt like I could imagine everything that happened in the book! The characters were incredibly well written, as well!

“On the morning of my sixteenth birthday, the darkness descended in a form incarnate…”
Ella was a pretty unique character. She fit the tale and time period quite well. She was a kind, caring character that undergoes a major transformation to protect the ones he loves. She started off as an innocent, naive girl and quickly became a force to be reckoned with.

“Only at that moment did it occur to me that I might be playing at something, well, otherworldly.”
William, was a superb character. He did not have a heavy influence in the story, which was a refreshing take to not have the love interest thrown in the foreground, but he still had an important plot role. He was strong, dashing, and oddly mysterious. And the plot twist involving him at the end was pretty unique!

“Like a crack of lightning in the clear night sky, there was nothing sharper in his eyes than pure, unadulterated goodness.”
Celia, Charlotte, and Victoria were oddly satisfying villains! They were horrifically cruel to Ella and very terrifying! They each had a slightly different personality to stand against each other, but they fit the protagonists perfectly! I couldn’t imagine the evil mother and stepsisters written any other way than they were here.

“As cruel as a person might be, only a monster wishes death upon their enemies.”
I believe this has become my new favorite Cinderella retelling! It had terror, gore, action, evil spirits, and magic. If you want to satisfy both the fairy tale lover and horror fan in yourself, then look no further than Cinderella Necromancer! Rating this one 5 stars!

F.M. Boughan is represented by Bill Contardi of Brandt & Hochman.
