Elizabeth L. Carter, who publishes as E.L. Carter, holds an undergraduate degree in creative writing and a master’s degree in psychology. She has worked as a psychotherapist and lives in Hawaii with her husband and son, the latter whom she is busy homeschooling and who, as she notes in her Amazon.com biography, “teaches her new things every day about everything from extinct birds to creating symmetry with Legos.” Carter is the author of one novel, The Running War.
The Running War
In her debut novel, The Running War, Carter employs a poetic voice to follow the trail of the effects of war on a grieving woman’s family and ultimately to find what her own birthright really is. Maddy has been evading her past for years. She not only has run away from her home and family but also has also cut and run on lovers and friends. She and her brother, Kris, shared a close relationship, and his suicide following an injury in the Iraq War sends Maddy back to her home, only to be mystified by a note Kris has left for her about a gift that she needs to find. This leads Maddy on a deep dive into her family history, discovering longtime secrets about their grandmother, of Gypsy or Romani heritage, who survived the Holocaust but was ostracized by the family. Maddy finds further impacts and effects of war on several generations of the women in her family across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. As she unveils this secret family history, Maddy finally discovers her brother’s gift, learning that she must accept and process a healing of this intergenerational trauma.
Reviewing The Running War, a Kirkus Reviews critic applauded it, noting that Carter’s first novel is “lyrically written” and contains “vivid passages.” However, the critic also felt that Carter’s “reliance on a near-poetic style of prose obscures much of the plot.” In the final analysis, the Kirkus Reviews contributor felt that The Running War is trying for “something more meaningful than it achieves.”

After her brother's suicide, a young woman with a history of running from her problems tries to find a
mysterious gift that leads her to a deeper understanding of her family's history.Maddy and her brother, Kris,
always shared a close connection, even when adulthood put geographic distance between them as Maddy
began compulsively traveling and Kris pursued the study of butterflies. But his decision to join the military
in the early years of the war in Iraq changed that; after an accident, he came back to the United States
depressed and died by suicide shortly thereafter. In the wake of his death, Maddy is drawn back to her
parents' home, where she is given a note Kris left behind for her, alluding to a mysterious gift she has to
find. Her search for that gift kicks off a journey that unearths long-held secrets about her grandmother, a
Romani Holocaust survivor, and the impact war has had on multiple generations of women in her family.
This debut novel is lyrically written and lands some vivid passages, but the author's reliance on a near-poetic
style of prose obscures much of the plot. The connection between Maddy and Kris, though clear, is so
central to the book that much of it feels like an inside story the reader isn't in on. A novel that seems to be
reaching for something more meaningful than it achieves.
