WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Laura V. Hilton is the author contemporary romance novels, most of which feature Amish characters, as Hilton’s maternal grandparents were Amish. She is the author of a number of stand-alone romances as well as three series: “Amish of Seymour,” “Amish of Webster County,” and “Amish of Jamesport,” all of which are set in Missouri.
In an interview with Fiona Mcvie on Authors Interviews Website, Hilton, who formerly worked in business, remarked on when she began writing: “I think I’ve always been writing. The first serious attempt came when I was in third grade–but even before then I dreamed of writing stories. … I became serious when my two oldest children were toddlers and told people I wanted to write stories. I got the usual flack–‘You’ll never sell.’ ‘Most writers never get published.’ Stuff like that. So I decided to write for me and get the stories in my head out. Not worry about publication.” Publication did follow, however: Hilton has published more than a score of novels since her 2011 debut.
In an Amish Wisdom Website interview, Hilton commented on her work habits: “I have my computer open all day long for whenever I have a moment to work. I do my best work in the afternoon so I usually devote my morning to marketing and housework and my evenings to reading and reviewing. I drink no more than two cups of coffee a day–and I drink unsweetened tea after I’ve reached my coffee limit. I don’t listen to music because it distracts me and I have enough distractions since I write in the living room, surrounded by my family (five children, a dog who thinks he’s a person, my husband, and a phone that demands attention whenever I walk away from it.)”
"Amish of Seymour" Series
Hilton’s first novel, Patchwork Dreams, also launched her first series, “Amish of Seymour,” set in and around the actual town of Seymour in Webster County, Missouri. The largest Amish settlement in Missouri is located near the town, and it is here that Jacob Miller is sent one summer by his father, who disapproves of his girlfriend, Susie. Jacob ends up at the Troyer farm to work this summer, and there he meets Becky Troyer, who is the outcast of the community because she had a child out of wedlock. She thinks she will never find a man to marry and Jacob is at first intent on finding her one until he discovers that he himself is the perfect choice. “The strong characters and fast pace keep the reader engaged and rooting for Becky and Jacob,” noted RT Book Reviews Website contributor Leslie L. McKee.
The series continues with Harvest of Hearts, in which another Amish man from Pennsylvania comes to Seymour to make a fresh start. Matthew Yoder rooms with the Stoltzfus family until he can find a place of his own, and there he meets the family’s prodigal daughter, Shanna, who is studying to be a nurse but is spending the summer at the family home. Shanna intends to return to the world of the Englisch after the summer, never believing that her plans to be a nurse would fit in with the Amish way. But Matthew soon spins an argument she cannot refuse. McKee again had praise for this second installment in RT Book Reviews Website, noting that the author’s “characters … remind us that despite our desires, God has plans that are greater than any we could ever envision.”
Promised to Another concludes he series, with yet another Amish man from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania arriving in Seymour to begin a new life. Joshua Esh is eager to build his new farm and home and thinks he has found a good mate in spunky schoolteacher Annie Beiler, until he learns that she is promised to another man who has left the Amish but says he will return someday to claim Annie. But Joshua can be patient for only so long. “This is a fantastic romantic story for anyone who enjoys Amish books as well as just a great love story,” noted Angie Howatt in RT Book Reviews Website.
"Amish of Webster County" Series
Hilton features more stories of love overcoming all odds. in her ‘Amish of Webster County’ series. Healing Love launches the series, featuring Amish midwife Kristi who falls in love with Englischer veterinarian Shane. RT Book Reviews Website contributor Patsy Glans felt this novel has “well-defined characters who wear their emotions on their sleeves and are not ashamed of letting their flaws show.”
Surrendered Love is a novel of second chances between former sweethearts Janna and police officer Hiram Troyer, who has left the Amish faith. RT Book Reviews Website contributor Glans termed this a “wonderful romance with a believable storyline that flows smoothly throughout.” Glans added: “Hilton gives the Amish way of life a voice in her book.” A bashful Amish baker and a young man with a troubled past find true love in Awakened Love, a “sweet romance with some mystery thrown in,” according to RT Book Reviews Website contributor Glans
"Amish of Jamesport" Series
Further tales of love in Missouri’s Amish communities are offered up in Hilton’s “Amish of Jamesport” series which begins with The Snow Globe. Here, an Amish caregiver and the rakish grandson of her client rekindle childhood connections. RT Book Reviews Website contributor Susan Mobley felt that this novel “shows the difficulties facing those who chose the Amish way of life and the strict rules they follow.”
The Postcard, the second novel in the series, is an “interesting look at Amish beliefs and the need to discover God’s will for one’s life, even when it goes against a lifetime of instruction, noted ” commented Mobley in the online RT Book Reviews. Another novel of second chances at love is offered in The Birdhouse, “a fine story of the trials and questions that can arise for those learning of God in the Amish community, showing both the good and bad that can be found there,” according to Mobley in RT Book Reviews Website.
Stand-Alone Novels
Hilton teams with fellow romance novelist Cindy Loven in Swept Away. Sara Jane, a teacher, is also caring for her grandmother and working on a quilting project with the elderly lady. Andrew, a handyman for the grandmother, has secrets in his past that intrigue Sara. “This charming tale brings together two people who realize they have more in common than they assume at first glance, and show that first impressions are not always the end of a story,” noted RT Book Reviews Website contributor Sarah Frobisher. A Publishers Weekly contributor also had praise, commenting: “The authors blend a simple romance with the somber, universal issues of death, illness, and forgiveness in a relatable tale full of likable characters.”
Amish Firefighter features Sam Miller, eager to start a new life by volunteering as a firefighter. When arson destroys a local barn, newcomer Abigale is everyone’s prime suspect for starting the fire, but Sam thinks differently. RT Book Reviews Website contributor Jenny Falcone had praise for this novel, commenting: “An original, intriguing Amish story of finding ones place. This story has a fast, steady pace and relatable, thoroughly developed characters who will make you laugh and cry right along with them.”
Love by the Numbers is set in Jamesport, Missouri, where Lydia has come after an accident claimed the life of her fiancé. In Jamesport, she is managing a gift shop for which Caleb does the bookkeeping and also crafts cuckoo clocks sold in the store. There is mutual attraction, but Caleb wonders if the effervescent Lydia is right for him. Then accusations from her previous bishop threaten to harm Lydia’s reputation and Caleb comes to her aid in this “tender story that will touch readers’ hearts,” according to Melanie Bates in RT Book Reviews Website. Bates added, “Fans of Hilton will be left with one inspiring read.” A Publishers Weekly reviewer was also impressed, commenting: “Hilton unflinchingly demonstrates the personal consequences of being judged guilty by one’s community.”

Hello and welcome to my blog, Author Interviews. My name is Fiona Mcvie.
Let’s get you introduced to everyone, shall we? Tell us your name. What is your age?
My name is Laura V. Hilton. And I’m old enough to know better.
Fiona: Where are you from?
I currently live in Arkansas but I’ve also lived in Missouri and in Michigan.
Fiona: A little about yourself (ie, your education, family life, etc.).
I have a business administration degree, but I don’t work in that field currently. I’ve been married thirty years to Steve and we have five children. Three are adults and two are still in the home. I homeschool the two youngest. I am a pastor’s wife and a breast cancer survivor.
Fiona: Tell us your latest news.
My book Christmas Admirer recently released with Whitaker House, and I have an Amish novella releasing in October, and a Christmas contemporary romance releasing in November. I’m currently writing an Amish romance that is slated for release in July 2018.
Fiona: When and why did you begin writing?
I think I’ve always been writing. The first serious attempt came when I was in third grade – but even before then I dreamed of writing stories.
Fiona: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I became serious when my two oldest children were toddlers and told people I wanted to write stories. I got the usual flack – “You’ll never sell.” “Most writers never get published.” Stuff like that. So I decided to write for me and get the stories in my head out. Not worry about publication.
Fiona: What inspired you to write your first book?
It was one of those stories in my head.
Fiona: How did you come up with the title?
Well, some of my stories have titles I came up with and some have titles the publisher came up with. I think it’s about fifty/fifty right now. I try to think of something related to the story and name it that way. Christmas Admirer I named The Christmas Challenge, but the publisher changed it because there a lot of books with that name. Gingerbread Wishes and Carousel Christmas I named and I get to keep those titles.
Fiona: Do you have a specific writing style?
Is there anything about your style or genre that you find particularly challenging? I mostly write Amish contemporary romance and my maternal grandparents were Amish. I don’t really find my genre or style challenging.
Fiona: How much of the book is realistic and are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Depends. The Amish Wanderer is based on a true story. It is my maternal grandparents story. None of the others are based on my own life – BUT that said I do have real events in them. In Surrendered Love, the bear in the tree and the buggy / police car slow speed chase really happened – my husband’s aunt lives in that town and sent me the clippings. I have other examples too.
Fiona: To craft your works, do you have to travel? Before or during the process?
Depends. On Swept Away, my cowriter wanted it set in West Virginia. And I’m like can’t write realistically about that. Then she named the town and when I looked it up, I realized I’d been there! And I could see it in my head. I’ve been to Webster County Missouri / Seymour several times, but didn’t research there until I was contracted. Jamesport, I went while I was proposing my first story set there. And the current book I’m writing, is set in Michigan and I’ve been in that area several times.
Fiona: Who designed the covers?
The publisher designs all the covers. The three books that I self-published, my husband designed those covers.
Fiona: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I leave the messages up to God and the reader. What I get out of it might not be what you do.
Fiona: Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? Who is your favorite writer, and what is it about their work that really strikes you?
I can’t think of any new writers right off hand, though I do need to read some for endorsement soon. My favorite writer – how can I choose? To name a few: Susan May Warren, Colleen Coble, Denise Hunter, Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason, Susan Sleeman, Val Comer, etc etc etc.
Fiona: Outside of family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author.
My critique partners and my agent.
Fiona: Do you see writing as a career?
It’s a calling, for sure. Financially speaking – you have heard the term “starving artist.”
Fiona: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No. I really love the story.
Fiona: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?
I always learn something. Christmas Admirer taught me about lion fighters both biblically and spiritually as I did a lot of research about a biblical character named Benaiah – after King David’s bodyguard.
Fiona: If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
I have no idea. We don’t have TV or watch movies so I don’t know who is out there.
Fiona: Any advice for other writers?
The advice that was given me. “Put your butt in the chair and write.” Or this one. “What God’s given you a passion for He’s given you permission for.”
Fiona: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
Don’t be afraid to contact authors and tell them how their books touched them. Or if you fall in love with a secondary character, let them know. Maybe they’ll use that character in a future book.
Fiona: What book are you reading now?
These Healing Hills by Ann H. Gabhart.
Fiona: Do you remember the first book you read?
Um. No. But I was born reading. So I don’t know.
Fiona: What makes you laugh/cry?
I have kids. Five of them. They make me laugh and cry.
Fiona: Is there one person, past or present, you would love to meet? Why?
I’d like to talk to my mom again and get her advice about something.
Fiona: Do you have any hobbies?
Other than writing/reading/teaching school/being a pastor’s wife… No. Not really. I seem to collect postcards, challenge coins from stations my Coast Guard son has been stationed at, and lighthouses.
Fiona: What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?
No TV. No movies. We read.
Fiona: Favorite foods, colors, music?
Food depends on my mood. Colors I love pretty much all of them, but white is my favorite. Music praise and worship, pop…….. 50s and 60s and 70s and 80s……….
Fiona: Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?
I’d be physically unable due to a stroke or something. I’d probably daydream stories. Like I did before I started. Or I’d pray a lot.
Fiona: What do you want written on your head stone?
The basics are fine.

The Christmas Admirer
Benaiah Troyer has loved Susanna King for as long as he can remember, but other than a lone summer filled with romantic buggy rides, marrying her remains an elusive dream. When his parents died in an accident a year ago, he broke up with her—for her own good. After all, they left him as the sole caregiver for his three younger sisters and his grandparents. What woman wants to step into a ready-made family like his? Still, he leaves her monthly gifts from “A Secret Admirer,” hoping she’ll know that someone loves her, even though he isn’t free to step forward.
Susanna has never gotten over losing Benaiah, and hopes he’s her secret admirer, but now the clock is ticking. Susanna’s father is remarrying in January and his wife-to-be doesn’t want to leave her Amish community and family in Iowa. So when Susanna’s daed sells his glass-blowing business to his right-hand man, Benaiah, she’s left with three options: 1) Go with Daed to his new home with a new frau and step-kinner, 2) Flush out her mysterious secret admirer, or 3) Resign herself to life as an old maid. She doesn’t want to follow Daed where his new frau is leading him. And number three isn’t happening. Marrying Benaiah is her greatest desire—but he broke her heart, and now he treats her like a pesky younger sister. Can she make him see her as a woman, one who could stand by his side as he cares for his family?
As Christmas approaches, Susanna and her friends start making gingerbread houses for select members of the community. Susanna plans for hers to go to Benaiah’s family. But while her gingerbread may find a home—will her heart?

Love by the Numbers
Laura V. Hilton. Whltaker, $13.99 trade paper (272p) ISBN 978-1-62911-932-8
Hilton (Patchwork Dreams) offers a tale about the fallout of one's character being unjustly called into question. Living in a small, unnamed Amish town, Lydia Hershberger is shunned by her neighbors after her fiance dies when his buggy is struck by lightning. To escape local gossip surrounding a claim she makes against a married man who approaches her after the death of her husband, Lydia takes a job working in Jamesport, Miss., at her aunt and uncle's gift shop while they go on a missionary trip. Lydia's best friend, Abigail, also lives there, and she's anxious to see her. Caleb, an employee of the gift shop, becomes lovestruck when the girl he admired from afar at Abigail's wedding earlier that year turns out to be the temporary helper. But Lydia, at least at first, wants nothing to do with romance after the disastrous end of her engagement. When false allegations reach Jamesport thanks to a visiting bishop, Lydia has to choose whether to face her accuser or run away again. Caleb, determined to win Lydia's trust, decides to rely on God's wisdom and intervene or her behalf. Hilton unflinchingly demonstrates the personal consequences of being judged guilty by one's community. (Feb.)

Laura V. Hilton. Whitaker, $13.99 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-62911-894-9
Hilton (The Amish Wanderer) transports readers to an Amish community in modern-day Missouri in this enjoyable inspirational romance. Twenty-year-old Susanna King has known she was destined to be the wife of Benaiah "Ben" Troyer since they were young, yet he inexplicably broke her heart and ended their engagement after the death of his parents. In the year since, Susanna has been receiving unexpected, thoughtful gifts from a secret admirer. Now Susanna's life is falling apart, quickly. In the space of a few hours, she finds out that her father is marrying a woman Susanna knows nothing about and that she's expected to uproot her life and move to Iowa with him. Benaiah's life is not the easiest, either. After his parents were killed in an accident, he has been the caretaker for his younger sisters and grandparents--circumstances which con vinced him that there was no room in his life for another responsibility. The sweetness and joy of the romance is heavily overshadowed by the seemingly unrelenting hardships the young couple are forced to endure as well as the on-again, off-again quality of their relationship. Although many lingering questions are left unanswered, the faith component of the book is subtle and practical. Agent: Tamela Hancock Murray, Steve Laube Agency (Sept.)

This first collaboration between seasoned author Hilton (Patchwork Dreams) and fellow pastor's wife Loven is an easy read. Sari Morgan is set on marrying her granddaughter Sara Jane off to new handyman Drew Stevenson, but she's in a race against time as Alzheimer's threatens her matchmaking and the stubborn pair resist her efforts. Sara Jane views Drew as a "John the Baptist wannabe"; he sees her as a "high-maintenance drama queen." Each has experienced a loss too great to speak of with the other. Yet their mutual attraction draws them together as strongly as their misconceptions work to keep them apart. Drew has overcome grief and found his way back to God by hiking the Appalachian Trail, while Sara Jane struggles to believe that God exists and continues to blame herself for the deaths of her parents. Intermittently, the three of them work on Sari's ballad quilt, sewing a story that resembles their own lives as much as it does the folk ballad "Pretty Saro." The authors blend a simple romance with the somber, universal issues of death, illness, and forgiveness in a relatable tale full of likable characters. Agency. Steve Laube Literary Agency (Nov.)

The Story Behind ‘The Amish Firefighter’ by Laura Hilton
May 2, 2016 By Amish Wisdom Admin 23 Comments
aw-bn-the amish firefighter
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, Nor will the flame burn you. —Isaiah 43:2
Some time ago, I was surfing Pinterest, and I saw a picture of an Amish man with a team of firefighters, holding a fire hose and rushing toward a brush fire. That picture intrigued me, and I saved it to my Pinterest story board, The Amish Firefighter.
Then I ran across some articles written about Amish firefighters and paramedics. The Amish believe in giving back to their community and that is one way they are allowed to do so. Some of the girls even take EMT classes to work on ambulances or as first responders. Some Amish communities even have signs up, showing Amish men on scooters racing for the fire station or the scene of the fire.
Wow, impressive!
Sammy Miller, my hero in The Amish Firefighter, survived a fire in The Postcard. He had already started school to become an EMT and paramedic before the book starts due to an accident in Pennsylvania which killed his best friend, Ezra Weiss. The fire he was rescued from in The Postcard cemented his desire to help others and he became a volunteer fire fighter in Jamesport.
Abigail Stutzman has relocated to Jamesport due to her mother’s marriage to an Amish widower. She thought she was sent there to force her to break up with her boyfriend, who happened to be her step-father’s son. But the story behind her story was so much more volatile than she ever imagined.
AmishFirefighter coverWhen the book opens, Abigail is following a new friend into a barn to meet her boyfriend and some of his friends. But before she makes it back to where the men are, everyone runs out and Abigail is stunned to discover that someone there had set the barn on fire! She tries to think how to best proceed, let the animals out, then call for help? Call for help and start fighting the fire? Fight the fire and then proceed from there? But when running out of the barn she trips and falls over something and there she is discovered by Sammy who is returning from a late class and hears the family dog barking a warning.
An unknown girl. Alone. In a burning barn. What is a man to think?
Sammy went with the obvious. She was a firestarter. An arsonist. And he was going to have her pay.
The flames between Abigail and Sammy were just as dangerous as the fires that were set around the Amish community. And in Abigail’s words, “The spark between them is undeniable, but she could never trust her life—or her heart—to a man who thinks her guilty.”
I absolutely loved The Amish Firefighter, and writing this story. It was fun, exciting, and not at all predictable. Not only that, but both Abigail and Sammy go through the refiner’s fire, growing spiritually and in ways they never expected.

Laura Hilton talks about A White Christmas in Webster County on www.amishwisdom.com
Before we get to your talent for writing, let’s learn more about you as a person. What part of the country do you live in?
I live in the Midwest—always have. We lived in Missouri, Michigan, and northern Arkansas.
Tell us about your writing habits: how many hours a day do you devote to writing? What time of day? Where do you write? Any interesting work patterns…like a certain type of music? Or continual infusions of coffee?
I have my computer open all day long for whenever I have a moment to work. I do my best work in the afternoon so I usually devote my morning to marketing and housework and my evenings to reading and reviewing. I drink no more than two cups of coffee a day – and I drink unsweetened tea after I’ve reached my coffee limit. I don’t listen to music because it distracts me and I have enough distractions since I write in the living room, surrounded by my family (five children, a dog who thinks he’s a person, my husband, and a phone that demands attention whenever I walk away from it.)
Let’s talk about the Amish. Have you been influenced by the Amish in a positive way?
I know some Amish personally. Some of them are friendly and outgoing and once you become friends with them, they are willing to help out in some ways. I am friends with an Amish man who lives near me and he gifts me with vegetables and fruits occasionally and if he isn’t busy answers questions I may have.
What are your thoughts about the growth of Amish fiction? Why do you think it is such a popular sub-genre?
I love Amish fiction. I think it is popular because it is usually quiet. Calm. Even the Amish mysteries have a quiet peaceful tone to them. And that is lacking in most of our lives.
Laura Hilton talks about A White Christmas in Webster County on www.amishwisdom.comTell us about your most recent book, A White Christmas in Webster County.
Wanting to relocate from Shipshewana to somewhere new in order to heal from losing her beau in a tragic accident, Mercy Lapp answered an ad in The Budget to work as a mother’s helper for Matthew and Shanna Yoder in Seymour, Missouri.
Meanwhile, her childhood acquaintance, Abner Hilty had fled Shipshewana to Montana to work on a ranch after he witnessed a murder. Now that the killer is safely behind bars, Abner decides to visit his brother in Missouri. Mercy is surprised to see Abner there, and equally surprised by how much he’d changed physically since she’d last seen him.
As Christmas approaches, an unexpected heavy snow lets Abner and Mercy spend a lot of time together. Abner hopes to interest Mercy in a more permanent relationship, but Mercy makes a potentially life-changing discovery. Readers will enjoy the tension as Mercy tries to decide where she will make her life.
What kinds of “Christmasy” things did you do to get in the mood to write a Christmas-themed book?
Oh, this was fun. I found some Christmas ornaments – one was a gingerbread man, one a snowflake, and set them in prominent view of my computer. I tried playing Christmas music, but that was too much of a distraction, so I loaded a snow picture as background on my computer. I also put a Christmasy-scented candle nearby. And I picked out Christmas-themed books to read for when I needed a reading break. It also helped that my son was on a baking spree right then and made cookies, homemade pretzels, homemade peppermint patties and more.

LOVE BY THE NUMBERS
Author(s):
Laura V. Hilton
Hilton’s latest is a tender story that will touch readers’ hearts. With a plot set in a quaint Amish town with its endearing residents, this story, focused around love, will resonate with readers. An engaging heroine in Lydia and an intriguing, reserved hero in Caleb will have readers turning the pages because of the connection and tension that lies between them. The obstacles within the story feel genuine to its characters, and the honest, heartfelt storytelling make this story shine. Fans of Hilton will be left with one inspiring read.
Lydia Hershberger is starting anew in Jamesport, Missouri, running her aunt Judith’s store while her aunt is away and trying to move past the tragedy of the death of her fiancé. It’s at the end of the day that handsome Caleb Bontrager enters the store; he is taciturn but there to handle the store’s bookkeeping. Caleb wants nothing to do with the bubbly Lydia — he considers her trouble, as are all girls who are glittery and animated. He desires a more reserved woman, and yet, he finds himself as drawn to Lydia as she is to him. Spending time around Lydia appeals to Caleb’s heart and affections, making her hard to resist. When unexpected accusations are made about Lydia from a clergyman from her hometown, she is extremely discouraged. Her reputation is at stake, and the feelings Caleb and Lydia share for each other are tested. Will their growing affection overcome their perceptions and circumstances? This is a fine story of the trials and questions that can arise for those learning of God in the Amish community, showing both the good and bad that can be found there. Joshua Yoder has returned to the Amish community. He had tried to run from some poor decisions he made that ended in tragedy, but found they only followed him. He hopes to make things right with Greta Miller, the girl he left behind. Greta is struggling to help her family after her father is badly injured. THE POST CARD
Author(s):
Laura V. Hilton
An interesting look at Amish beliefs and the need to discover God’s will for one’s life, even when it goes against a lifetime of instruction. It gives a strong message of God’s love and the acceptance of His presence, even in the tragedies of life. But the use of Amish terms and phrases is unnecessary, distracting and often irritating.
David Lapp travels to Jamesport, Mo., in the hopes of meeting Rachel Miller, the young woman who wrote him letters when he was recovering from injuries incurred in a carriage accident, and with whom he believes he is falling in love. When he arrives, the bishop of Jamesport treats him with contempt, while Rachel’s brother, Sam, is quite obvious in his hatred for him. Yet David feels that this is where God wants him, and so he accepts the temporary position as schoolteacher, determined to woo Rachel even though she is promised to another. He also wants to discover why the bishop and Sam dislike him so. (WHITAKER HOUSE, Apr., 256 pp., $13.99)

THE SNOW GLOBE
Author(s):
Laura V. Hilton
Book one in The Amish of Jamesport shows the difficulties facing those who chose the Amish way of life and the strict rules they follow. The lack of freedom and reliance on works for salvation is well depicted. The Amish terms and phrases add nothing to the story and are an unfortunate distraction.
When Viktor Petersheim returns to Jamesport on break from his English job, he discovers Esther Beachy living in his home with his grandparents. At first resentful of her presence, Viktor soon realizes she is very important to the running of his home. Not ready to commit to being Amish, plus feeling guilty for the loss of his parents and siblings, Viktor is unhappy about his attraction to Esther. Esther also struggles with her desire for Viktor. However, circumstances may force her to marry another, even after she makes it known she has no wish to do so. (WHITAKER HOUSE, Nov., 256 pp., $13.99)

Hilton’s first Amish of Webster County book has well-defined characters who wear their emotions on their sleeves and are not ashamed of letting their flaws show. Readers will find a glossary in front of the book with the meaning of the Amish words. The author’s knowledge of, and respect for, the Amish is apparent in this tale.
Webster County midwife Kristine Lapp finds herself in an accident, and help comes in the form of Shane Zimmerman, the local vet. Shane used to be Amish and has no plans of returning to that way of life. He is very suspicious of Kristine’s use of herbs and other natural remedies, since he blames the use of those for the death of his wife during childbirth. When they are constantly thrown together because of Chinook, Kristine’s dog, they discover they both have feelings for each other. Can Shane go back to the Amish, or will Kristine be willing to leave her ways behind and become English? (WHITAKER HOUSE, Oct., 336 pp., $10.99)

PATCHWORK DREAMS
Author(s):
Laura V. Hilton
This is the first book in Hilton’s Amish of Seymour series. The strong characters and fast pace keep the reader engaged and rooting for Becky and Jacob. The unorthodox topic of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy is handled tactfully.
Jacob Miller’s dad is send- ing him to stay with their cousin in Missouri. Jacob does not realize he is there as part of an exchange program to bring new blood to the community. Jacob plans to return home in the summer to wed Susie, who wants to take a break from their courtship. Becky Troyer is sure that no man will want her, as she had a child out of wedlock. Jacob is determined to find her a beau. They are not sure how to proceed when they realize they are drawn to each other … especially when Susie re-enters the picture.
