Carolann Camillo made her debut as a novelist with the contemporary romance Southern Star, cowritten with Phyllis Humphrey. “I knew even as a child that I was captivated by words,” Camillo said in an autobiographical statement found on her eponymous home page, the Carolann Camillo Website. “When my mother told me to go and play in the backyard … I would make up plays … and direct the action.” Other works include the novels Eyewitness (also cowritten with Humphrey), Moonlit Desire (republished under the title The Frenchman and the English Rose), The Very Thought of You, and Forever Mine.
Southern Star and Eyewitness
Southern Star tells the story of a young woman named Marilee Shaw whose sole inheritance from her father’s estate is his yacht, the eponymous Southern Star. However, the ship also comes with an encumbrance: a huge amount of debt. Furthermore, the only person who will agree to pilot the ship is Gary Pritchard, the man she rejected. “Other problems plague the would-be couple,” stated a Publishers Weekly reviewer, “including some tourists with a secret agenda.”
In Eyewitness, Camillo and Humphrey relate the tale of a soap-opera actress, Toni Abbott, who falls afoul of the law after her professional photographer is murdered. Toni was on the scene when the murder occurred, but a blow to the head has fogged her memory. “With the help of Michael Benedict, a handsome young criminal lawyer,” declared a Cozy Mystery Book Reviews contributor, “Toni sets out to awaken her dormant memory and unmask the killer. Meanwhile the character she plays, Alexandra, is in a coma, fighting for her life.” Camillo’s and Humphrey’s second collaboration “is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next,” enthused a Vic’s Media Room contributor. “Don’t start this book late at night because you will lose sleep while you excitedly try to finish without guessing.” The authors, the Cozy Mystery Book Reviews contributor concluded, “have a winner in this book.”
The Frenchman and the English Rose
Camillo’s historical romance Moonlit Desire (also published as The Frenchman and the English Rose) is set in colonial America at the conclusion of the French and Indian War. It features Catherine Bradshaw, an Englishwoman who has come to New York to contract a marriage with Jeremy Flint, a man she barely knows. Flint has offered to rescue Catherine’s father from debt, but the price for doing so is Catherine’s hand. However, “she is abducted immediately after the wedding by Rive St. Clair,” wrote Majanka Verstraete on the InD’tale website, “a French army captain who suspects Flint is responsible for several heinous crimes.” “Sixteen years earlier, Flint instigated a massacre at an Indian village,” explained a contributor to the Camel Press website, “and now Rive hopes to lure him back to that same village and make him pay for his crimes. As Rive forges a path through the wilderness, Catherine’s indomitable spirit and resilience are put to the test. She is frightened of her surroundings and the man who holds her fate in his hands. Rive makes no secret of his desire for her, and she is determined to resist her own growing attraction. As for her scoundrel of a husband, Catherine harbors no more illusions.” The two make their way to Quebec—but the city falls to the attacking British army. What will happen to Catherine and Rive now?

I was born in New York City and am a graduate of St. John’s University. I loved living in the Big Apple but eventually succumbed to the lure of the West. It turned out to be a very good move. I met my husband, a college professor, in San Francisco, and we now live in the ‘burbs’ only twenty miles south of the city. We take every opportunity to attend plays, visit museums and patronize the ballet. We usually vacation during my husband’s two semester breaks. Our most recent travels have taken us to the Greek Isles, New Zealand and Australia. We’re looking forward in the future to a South American cruise.
I knew even as a child that I was captivated by words. When my mother told me to go and play in the backyard (read that as her wanting me ‘out of her hair’) I would make up plays, collect the props, take all the parts and direct the action. I must have been the only director in history to never get a complaint from the cast! I always wrote poetry and, in high school, wrote several cheers that were performed at the basketball games. I acted in school plays and attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. I appeared as an extra in films and in a couple of way off-off Broadway productions.
I have three published novels. Southern Star which I co-wrote with Phyllis Humphrey. My award winning historical romance Moonlit Desire which was published in March 2012 by Camel Press. My contemporary romance The Very Thought Of You which was published in November 2012 by Crimson Romance. My new romantic suspense novel Forever Mine will be published by Resplendence Publishing on September 24, 2014. I was a finalist in the Windy City Romance Writers Contest and have won the Foster City International Writers Contest in the children’s story division. At the time, I envisioned myself as another Dr. Seuss. However, my heart is in romance writing, and that is what does it for me today.
I lead a pretty full life. And seeing my novels published is, indeed, a dream come true.
From childhood, words captivated Carolann Camillo. She would write plays, collect props, take all the parts and direct the action. She attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, appearing as an extra in films and a couple of way off-off Broadway productions. She is a co-author of "Southern Star". Her historical romance, "Moonlit Desire", was published by Camel Press on March 16, 2012. Her contemporary romance, "The Very Thought Of You", from Crimson Romance was published on November 19, 2012. Her new romantic suspense, "Forever Mine", is due to be published by Resplendence Publishing on September 24, 2014. A member of the Writers Of America, she has won the Foster City International Writing Contest and was a finalist in the Windy City Romance Writers Contest. Humphrey and Camillo weave a predictable tale of love in the Bahamas in this skimpy contemporary.
Marilee Shaw inherits her father's yacht, the Southern Star, and the crushing debt that goes along with it.
Desperate to keep the Star, Marilee agrees to honor one last cruise that her father booked. To do that, she
needs a captain, and the only one available is Gary Pritchard, a former lover she refused to marry. Gary
agrees to pilot the Southern Star on one condition: Marilee must make the trip with him. Marilee can't deny
her attraction to Gary, but she's determined not to get involved with him again. Other problems plague the
would-be couple, including some tourists with a secret agenda. Lackluster prose and Marilee's erratic
emotions ultimately sink this short tale before it ever sets sail. (Mar.)

Catherine Bradshaw has travelled from London to New York to join her future husband, Jeremy Flint. Although she barely knows Jeremy, she already fears him. She is abducted immediately after the wedding by Rive St. Clair, a French army captain who suspects Flint is responsible for several heinous crimes, and has sworn to take revenge on him. As Rive and Catherine travel through the wilderness her wit, spirit and resolve are all put to the test. Meanwhile, Rive’s biggest test comes in the form of the attraction he feels toward Catherine. Can he prove himself worthy of her love, especially after the strange way they met?
"The Frenchman and the English Rose" is a character-driven historical romance. While both characters are intriguing, Rive St. Clair is by far the more compelling of the two. He is handsome, charming and dashing. He is also stubborn, and when he puts his mind to something, he refuses to let it go. Catherine, however, is a cookie-cutter heroine. Her personality is generic. She makes a fuss over things she shouldn’t, and then lets certain things go completely over her head — things she should complain about, or at least mention. She complies when she needs to and argues when it’s important, either to drive the plot forward or to ignite the passion between her and Rive. It’s hard for the reader to picture what exactly Rive finds so compelling about her. The historical setting is rich and detailed, and will transport readers to Quebec City in 1759.

Carolann Camillo and Phyllis Humphrey in their new book, “eyewitness book coverEyewitness” published by Camel Press gives us an adventure with Toni Abbott.
From the back cover: The big break Toni Abbott longed for has finally arrived. She has been cast as the soap opera villainess everyone loves to hate, and because of her, ratings are soaring. Then her lucky streak runs out. During a late-night photo session, Craig, the photographer, is shot to death. In the confusion Toni hits her head and is knocked unconscious, and when she awakes, she can’t recall what happened. If she could regain her memory, could she identify the killer? Apparently the killer thinks so, because soon after the incident, Toni hears someone breaking in to her apartment and barely escapes. Too bad the police believe she is somehow responsible for Craig’s murder. It doesn’t help that her character on the show is so convincingly nasty and conniving.
Was the target really Craig, or did the killer aim for Toni and miss? Craig was an unscrupulous womanizer. Any number of people might have wanted him dead, including a career criminal he helped convict, his business partner, his wife, and his mistress. Despite her winning personality, Toni has her share of enemies, among them an older actress jealous of her success and the show’s director, whose animosity baffles her.
With the help of Michael Benedict, a handsome young criminal lawyer, Toni sets out to awaken her dormant memory and unmask the killer. Meanwhile the character she plays, Alexandra, is in a coma, fighting for her life. The writers will decide Alexandra’s fate, but Toni must save herself.
This is one very clever murder mystery. There was a murder. Toni may have seen it however she has temporary amnesia. However the killer does not know that and feels that she can identify him so he is gunning for her. Was the cameraman really the killer’s target or was he really after Toni all along? How do you investigate when no one believes you? And is it possible that it ties in with the Soap Opera? If Toni doesn’t figure this all out soon she might wind up like the cameraman. “Eyewitness” is a wonderful thriller as the tension mounts as Toni is trying to identify the killer. “Eyewitness” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Don’t start this book late at night because you will lose sleep while you excitedly try to finish without guessing the end. Ms. Camillo and Ms. Humphrey have provided us with a great character in Toni Abbott and I think it would be nice to have her return in another adventure.

A shiver rippled though Catherine’s body, a shiver having naught to do with the lack of sunlight or the cool, damp air. She had responded to him, and she could no longer deny it. It had something to do with the tilt of his mouth when he smiled and everything to do with his touch, now so surprisingly light, considering that he must be furious with her. When he threaded those long, sculpted fingers through her hair, her scalp prickled with the most delicious sensations. She wondered when he would stop, was afraid to contemplate where he would stop. It took all her willpower to smother the moan that was forming dangerously in her throat. She could still feel his body imprinted against every part of hers.
It also took a considerable dose of common sense, combined with a stout mental kick to the posterior, to gather her defenses. Admittedly, he treated her with some respect. He touched her, but in a far less intimate way than he might have done, and had been generous in sharing his breakfast. Still, she was loath to think of his actions as gallant. She had no guarantee he would continue playing the role of a gentleman if they were to spend many more days and nights together. Her body’s betrayal frightened her, and she resolved to give him no cause to abandon all decency.
After what seemed an eternity, he said, “Don’t ever do that again. There are dangers about far greater than any you will ever suffer from me.”
She pushed against his chest with her arms. “I cannot breathe.”
He tipped her face up and gazed into her eyes. “I cannot trust you. So, Catherine, it seems I had better keep you close.”
He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the stream, setting her on her feet at the water’s edge. A flock of wild geese flew overhead in a V formation. On the opposite bank, a doe and her fawn stepped out of the trees and approached the stream. Rive placed a finger against his lips, and together they watched the animals drink.
Having experienced such an idyllic scene only in books, Catherine stared, enthralled. The doe raised her head and stood perfectly still for a moment before she turned and bolted for cover, followed closely by the fawn.
Rive slipped free the lace ruffle Catherine had tucked into her bodice, dipped it in the water and dabbed at the tiny cuts on her arms and hands. Throughout his ministrations, she stood as still as one of the surrounding trees. Spent from her flight and desperately in need of refreshing, she let him cleanse her wounds. While he did, she deepened her resolve to allow nothing he said or did to affect her in that way.
The task completed, he led her to where he left his horse, saddled and ready to ride.
“Madame’s transport awaits.” Then he lifted her onto the horse’s back, gathered the reins and bounded up behind her. Looping one arm about her waist, he murmured against her ear, “Yes, from now on, I intend to keep you very close indeed.”

Carolann absolutely loved living in the Big Apple, but the lure of the West grabbed hold of her and she chose to move. It was in San Francisco where she met her husband, a college professor. When her hubby has his two semester breaks, they find time to travel. Her most recent being the Greek Isles, New Zealand and Australia. They hope to soon take a South American cruise. (Oh, that sounds really fun. Hmm, I wonder if they have room for one more, since I missed the one to Australia?) Her heart is in romance writing, and being able to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Carolann has tremendous beauty, and iconic images to grant her some great inspiration to compose. Her life is pretty full and being able to see her books published is a dream come true. Moonlit Desire is one that this reader thoroughly enjoyed.
Moonlit Desire is a poignant story that carried this reader from the beginning to the end not wanting to stop. I love the strong and robust characters that undeniably stand out. The dialogue is truly impeccable. Catherine and Rive have a chemistry that is astonishing. I love all the expressions they emit toward the other. Jeremy comes off as the perfect guy that the reader wants to throw punches at and never stop. Carolann Camillo pens a wonderfully inspired story of love, devotion and honor. This is positively a heart-warming gem with all the makings of a great book. Indeed a journey worth traveling in every page.

What an amazing story. What would you do if you are involved in a murder but don't remember it ? And you may have seen the killer ? What if there have been a few "attempts" on your life ?
