SIDELIGHTS
Martin Gitlin, also known as Marty Gitlin, has written numerous nonfiction books. Based in Cleveland, OH, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University and went on to work as a sports reporter for Willoughby, OH’s News-Herald for over a decade. Gitlin began working as a freelance writer in 2006. In 2009, he became a Cleveland Browns beat writer for cbssports.com. He was later named the website’s fantasy football writer. Gillian’s nonfiction books have included biographies, as well as chronicles of historical events, cultural phenomena, and current events.
Jeff Gordon and George S. Patton
In Jeff Gordon: Racing’s Brightest Star, Gitlin chronicles the life of an important figure in NASCAR history. Deb Fowler, reviewer on the Feathered Quill website asserted: “This biography gives the reader a real feel for Jeff Gordon, his personality and zest for life and his sport.” “Confirmed fans will appreciate the close attention paid to the details of his career,” suggested John Peters in Booklist.
Gitlin profiles a celebrated military figure in George S. Patton: World War II General & Military Innovator. Reviewing the volume in Booklist, Ed Sullivan remarked: “It is … effective in introducing the facts of Patton’s life and career.”
Sonia Sotomayor and Billie Jean King
Gitlin profiles a member of the highest court in the U.S. in Sonia Sotomayor: Supreme Court Justice. Writing in School Library Journal, Carol Fazioli suggested: “The writing is accessible, the format is open.”
Billie Jean King: Tennis Star & Social Activist is another biography by Gitlin. Ilene Cooper, reviewer in Booklist, noted that the book featured an “accessible and well-written narrative.”
Wounded Knee Massacre, The Baby Boomer Encyclopedia, and Cheerleading
Gitling begins his 2010 book, Wounded Knee Massacre, with an overview of the tensions between the U.S. government and Native Americans. He goes on to explain how this tension affected the tragic events that occurred at Wounded Knee in 1890. A Reference & Research Book News critic remarked: “The book’s reader-friendly layout and plain language make it accessible to all.” “Gitlin gets behind the myth on both sides and constructs a narrative that presents the facts of the tragedy,” commented Brian Odom in School Library Journal.
Gitlin focuses on the generation of Americans born between the years 1946 and 1965 in his 2011 book, The Baby Boomer Encyclopedia. He explains that the increase in children born during this time period is connected to the conclusion of World War II. Gitlin highlights key political and cultural events involving the Baby Boomers. “Martin Gitlin’s Baby Boomer Encyclopedia is a fun read,” asserted Carla Wilson Buss in Reference & User Services Quarterly. Buss added: “The Baby Boomers Encyclopedia provides an interesting way to pass an afternoon and is useful to look up information on what may have been favorites for a reader, but other works are more useful to the reference collection.” Similarly, A.B. Johnson, writer in Choice, suggested: “For those seeking detailed analysis or rigorous scholarship, longer and more specifically focused works will prove a better resource.” “Though somewhat limited, this title may prove useful to secondary schools or public libraries that consistently serve high school students,” remarked James Langan in Library Journal.
In Cheerleading: Girls Play to Win Series, Gitlin offers an overview of the sport. He highlights it’s history, key figures, training, important techniques and strategies, and competitions. The book includes color photographs. A writer in Children’s Bookwatch commented that the book was “written in clear, expressive action prose.”
The Great American Cereal Book and Vietnam War
Gitlin collaborated with Topher Ellis to write The Great American Cereal Book: How Breakfast Got Its Crunch. In this volume, they trace the history of the cereal industry, beginning with the release of Granose Flakes in 1896. This cereal was created by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, who later introduced Corn Flakes, a cereal still on grocery store shelves today. Gitlin and Ellis go on to discuss cereal’s wave of popularity in 1902. Numerous cereals began to be industrially produced at that time. The book mentions cartoon characters that cereal companies created in order to appeal to children. Among them are Tony the Tiger, Baron Von Redberry, and Toucan Sam. The volume includes pictures of these characters, as well as old cereal box designs. “Rare memorabilia combines with chatty fun facts,” noted a California Bookwatch writer. Neil Pond, contributor to the American Profile website, praised the book’s “cool collection of vintage ads, trivia and history.” George Gene Gustines, a New York Times reviewer, suggested: “The best parts of the book … are the eye-catching cereal boxes.”
In Vietnam War, Gitlin offers a history of the protracted conflict. School Library Journal reviewer, Eldon Younce, stated that Gitlin did “an excellent job of describing the history.”
The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time and Cyber Attack
Gitlin calls out important television shows in his 2014 book, The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time. Jasmine L. Jefferson, critic in Reference & User Services Quarterly, commented: “The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time is a fun read and would be helpful for students doing general projects on the history of television.”
Gitlin and Margaret J. Goldstein comment on current cybercrime and looks back on its origins in Cyber Attack. “Mr. Gitlin’s little book is a good introduction to the subject of cyber attacks,” remarked a writer on the Semicolon website. A Kikrus Reviews critic described it as “a bare-bones introduction for readers without a pre-existing interest.”
Powerful Moments in Sports and A Celebration of Animation
Gitlin highlights pivotal events throughout sports history in Powerful Moments in Sports: The Most Significant Sporting Events in American History. Among the moments he discusses is Babe Ruth’s joining the New York Yankees baseball team after having played for the Boston Red Sox. Gitlin also explains how theories on eugenics were overturned when boxer Joe Louis fought Max Scheming in 1938. “Gitlin expertly digs below the surface of each [event],” suggested a reviewer in Publishers Weekly.
In A Celebration of Animation: The 100 Greatest Cartoon Characters in Television History, Gitlin and Joe Wos call out important animated characters, including Bugs Bunny, Rocks, Charlie Brown, Beavis and Butthead, and Homer Simpson. A Publishers Weekly critic remarked: “The book will inspire countless debates and arguments.”

I have authored about 110 for more than a dozen publishers since turning my attention to strictly freelance writing in 2006. I am also proud of my work as the Cleveland Browns beat writer for cbssports.com, which began in 2009, and my current work as a fantasy football and baseball writer for the same site.
Also exciting has been the national and local attention received by The Great American Cereal Book, a fun, funny, colorful breakfast cereal encyclopedia and coffee table book. It has been featured in dozens of newspapers and magazines across the country, including the New York Times, Time Magazine, Reader's Digest and Wall Street Journal. I have also been interviewed on several national radio programs and major city TV shows.
My goal is to maximize my potential as an author. I am hoping to gain more educational book assignments. I have received wonderful feedback from publishers and book packagers. I specialize in history/social studies, sports, entertainment and biographies of notable people in all walks of life.
I have also gained experience as a public speaker. I would like to expand my horizons in that area. I am looking for opportunities to speak at schools, businesses, libraries ... wherever ... about The Great American Cereal Book and all my book writing, as well as my experiences as a sportswriter.
Specialties: Sports, history, writing, social studies, public speaking, classic TV, classic rock and, of course, cereal. See less See less of Marty’s summary

''THE GREAT AMERICAN
CEREAL BOOK,'' by Marty
Gitlin and Topher Ellis, instantly evokes feelings of childhood, watching Saturday morning cartoons while being bombarded with commercials for sweet cereals with colorful mascots like Toucan Sam and Tony the Tiger. There are factoids to be learned, like the 1902 boom in the manufacture of cereal that followed in the footsteps of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's introduction of Granose Flakes in 1896. But the best parts of the book (Abrams Image, $19.95) are the eye-catching cereal boxes. The image of Baron Von Redberry and his counterpart, Sir Grapefellow, were immediate favorites. To use the vernacular of the book, both cereals were first poured in 1972 and were milked until 1975. We salute you, gentlemen! GEORGE GENE GUSTINES

A Celebration of Animation: The 100 Greatest Cartoon Characters in Television History
Martin Gitlin and Joe Wos. Globe Pequot, $35
(256p) ISBN 978-1-6307-6278-0
Cultural historian Gitlin (Powerful Moments in Sports) and cartoonist Wos (Myths and Monsters) set themselves an
almost impossible task: ranking "the greatest cartoon characters ever to grace the small screen." Readers may disagree
with the individual rankings--Bugs Bunny at #1, Homer Simpson at #2--but the authors succeed in their goal of
capturing a near definitive list of animated legends in this thoughtful and funny book. Starting with "an objective set of
criteria" for placement, including factors such as "legacy," "longevity," and "uniqueness of voice," the authors lucidly
explain their decisions. Each entry provides basic historical information, a section of "tidbits essential to understanding
the animated subject" (e.g., Peter Griffin of Family Guy was inspired by Archie Bunker), and a final section that
explains the basis for the actual ranking (Bugs Bunny is #1 because of his "status through three quarters of a century";
Homer Simpson is #2 because he is "the central character in easily the most successful primetime cartoon ever"). But
the real fun comes in the middle: Is Rocko (#51) really better than Charlie Brown (#56)? And are Beavis and Butthead
(#26) really better than both? The book will inspire countless debates and arguments. (Oct.)

Powerful Moments in Sports: The Most Significant Sporting Events in American
History
Martin Gitlin. Rowman & Littlefield, $36
(304p) ISBN 978-1-4422-6495-3
This is a fascinating look at the sporting events that have "altered the American psyche," a history of American sports
not in terms of individual players or teams or games themselves but how they "affected America and sometimes its
place in the world." Sportswriter and popular-culture historian Gitlin (The Greatest College Football Rivalries of All
Time) examines how matters of race and sex have been at the heart of some of the great sporting events in the nation's
history. His look at the famous 1938 fight between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, for example, is both excellent boxing
reporting and an insightful depiction of how the bout "exposed the Nazi racial theory for the sham that it was and
provided a reason for white and black American to celebrate." Gitlin expertly digs below the surface of each events,
whether he's analyzing the national impact of Babe Ruth's trade from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees,
explaining Bernice R. Sandler's fight to implement Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, or describing the friendship
between basketball legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. (Apr.)

Gitlin, Martin CYBER ATTACK Twenty-First Century/Lerner (Children's Nonfiction) $33.32 4, 1 ISBN: 978-1-4677-
2512-5
A quick history of hacking, from the "phone phreaks" of the 1960s to today's attacks on commercial data stores large
and small.Drawing solely from previously published reports and documents, the authors paint an alarming picture
("The internet has become a cyber criminal playground") as they trace the growth of increasingly sophisticated digital
attacks on personal, corporate and government data systems. Though they rightly point out that many hackers, from
early "phreaks" like Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak on, have been motivated more by the pleasures of creating software
or high-tech gear (or, as they acknowledge in the case of Edward Snowden, idealism) than criminal intent, most of the
incidents they describe involve theft or espionage. Noting that attacks can come from anywhere in the world and that
malware can be secretly installed not just on computers, but on any number of gadgets, the authors project little hope of
keeping our information safe from bad guys. Nor do they offer more than, at best, bare mention of firewalls, encryption,
two-step verification, strong passwords and other protective countermeasures. Still, readers will at least come away
more aware of the range of hazards, from phishing and ransomware to botnets and distributed denial of service, as well
as the huge, rapidly increasing amounts of money and data shadowy entities are raking in. A bare-bones introduction
for readers without a pre-existing interest. (source notes, bibliography, further reading, index) (Nonfiction. 12-14)

Many factors influenced the children born between 1946 and 1965, just as much of society has been influenced by
them. Arranged alphabetically, the 93 articles here document what journalist and writer Gitlin (Diana Princess of
Wales) considers the most significant political, social, cultural, and historical events of the last 65 years. Entries are
brief and readable, usually one to three pages in length. Because historical events do not happen in a vacuum, each
chapter contains See also references and pointers to further readings. Researchers may find a few factors that detract
from the book's usefulness, however. Entries focus more on social and cultural events (e.g., television, motion pictures,
and music) that have been changed by the boomers and less on political events and figures. For example, while John
and Robert Kennedy each earn entries, there is no separate entry for President Johnson (though some of the oldest
boomers might have concerns about Medicare or Medicaid) or President Nixon. A longer book or more volumes might
alleviate this problem. While the book does present a good snapshot of a cultural event or individual, collegiate
institutions might find Gale's "American Decades" series more appealing to researchers, particularly volumes focusing
on the 1960s and 1970s. BOTTOM LINE Though somewhat limited, this title may prove useful to secondary schools or
public libraries that consistently serve high school students. Buy if your budget permits.--James Langan, Univ. of
Pittsburgh at Johnstown Lib.

This volume in the Military Heroes series offers a solid introduction to the controversial World War II commander,
chronicling Patton's life from his childhood through his untimely death from injuries suffered in an automobile
accident. Proving his greatness in the battlefield was Patton's central ambition from an early age, and Gitlin discusses
how Patton aggressively pursued his goal by lobbying for prestigious commands. Gitlin also demonstrates how Patton
was instrumental in his own undoing through bad temper and a penchant for speaking bluntly. Quoting primary sources,
Gitlin effectively portrays Patton as an aggressive, ambitious, courageous, often reckless, and occasionally visionary
military commander. The volume is illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs and appended with a time
line, glossary, suggestions for further reading, and source notes. Although this biography could have had a stronger
overall assessment of Patton's contributions to or influence upon military strategies and tactics, it is nonetheless
effective in introducing the facts of Patton's life and career.--Ed Sullivan

This one-volume work is a compilation of the best television sitcoms, spanning from the 1950s until today. In the
introduction, Gitlin states that identifying the best television sitcoms was not an easy task and explains the six criteria
used to determine the quality of the sitcoms included in this work.
The first criterion taken into account was the impact of the sitcom. As television became more and more popular,
sitcoms began exploring more issues that were not necessarily brought to the forefront of popular culture. The next
criterion used was the longevity of a show. Gitlin stated that it was important to take into account the ability of cast
members, writers, and producers to expand story lines and stay relevant when considering a spot on the list of the
greatest sitcoms of all time. The third criterion was television ratings. This criterion usually goes hand in hand with a
show's longevity. The fourth criterion was the amount of awards a sitcom had acquired. Although there have been some
sitcoms that have been passed over for awards that have still been praised as great sitcoms, most sitcoms use the
amount of awards they receive as an indication of the quality of the show. The last two criteria used were humor and
legacy. The ability of a sitcom to continue to be respected long past its initial television run speaks volumes to the
quality of the sitcom.
Each entry is listed numerically with number one being considered the best and ends with its seventieth entry. Within
each entry, readers can find the credits, dates the sitcoms originally aired, broadcast history, number of seasons, number
of episodes, and ratings history. There's also an overview of each show along with famous quotes or occurrences and
major awards. This book also includes appendices that include lists referring to popular male and female characters, the
best spin off sitcoms, as well as a few other lists. Although each entry includes at least one photo, there are no color
photos, which is a slight disappointment.
Overall, The Greatest Sitcoms of All Time is a fun read and would be helpful for students doing general projects on the
history of television. It is for this reason that I would suggest this item for both the academic library's and the public
library's reference collection. The entries are just long enough for you to decide whether or not you would like to know
more about a sitcom, and most entries include a section for suggested readings for more information. This is an item
that I could see being used for a class assignment or for pleasure reading as well.--Jasmine L. Jefferson, First Year

Gr 6-8--These titles do an excellent job of describing the history of three 20th-century wars in which the United States
has been involved. The main causes of each conflict are briefly described, and some of the major battles are discussed.
Numerous archival photos with good captions appear in all of the volumes: some of those in Vietnam are in color.
Some readers may find the placement of the information boxes annoying as they break the flow of the main texts, and
the books don't have enough maps. Substantial back matter includes a time line, graphic representation of the scope of

Martin Gitlin's Baby Boomer Encyclopedia is a fun read, especially if you fall into one of the categories that the
Library of Congress has supplied as one of the subject headings for this work: "Middle-aged persons--United States--
Encyclopedias." Gitlin's stated purpose was "to broadly encapsulate the generation" (vii) and to "[inform] later
generations about their Baby Boomer parents and [to give] Boomers insight into their generation." (vii) With nearly one
hundred entries, there is a lot of information to support these goals. Under the entry for "Games" (77) are descriptions
of chicken fights and red rover. The TV show M*A*S*H has an entry, as does Ronald Reagan. The entire book is a
short trip (see also "LSD" (119-20)) down that well-worn path, Memory Lane. Entries are generally at least a page in
length, although some are longer. Most entries have at least two citations for "further reading." A brief chronology
opens the encyclopedia beginning with the end of World War II in 1945 and the birth of the first babies of the baby
boom in 1946 and continuing through 2010 when the first baby boomers reached retirement age. An alphabetical list of
entries is provided at the beginning, as is a topical list. Topics include "Arts and Culture," "Events," "Family," " Music,"
and "Politics and Activism," among others. Scattered black and white photographs provide illustrations.
As with any encyclopedia of this nature, there is always the problem articulated by Bob Seger: "So much more to think
about / Deadlines and commitments / What to leave in, what to leave out" (Against the Wind, 1980). Gitlin indicates
that he chose topics "based on relevancy to the generation as a whole" (vii). This is understandably a huge task and will,
perforce, be rather hit or miss. At only 231 pages, it is nearly impossible to be completely comprehensive. However,
while there are essays on various topics such as "Aging" (3), "Career Changes" (23), and "Marriage and Infidelity"
(131) there are rather conspicuous absences. The Cold War is mentioned in passing but doesn't get its own entry. If
worried parents coupled with school children practicing what to do when "the Big One comes" didn't shape the baby
boomers, what did? Steve Martin, the Monkees, I Love Lucy, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Flintstones, and the
campus shootings of 1970 are among the many notable gaps. The selections seem to reflect the author's personal
preferences, less than a sense of scholarship. Happily, the "Space Race and Moon Landing" (178-80) made the cut, but
Neil Armstrong does not merit his own entry.
The Baby Boomers Encyclopedia provides an interesting way to pass an afternoon and is useful to look up information
on what may have been favorites for a reader, but other works are more useful to the reference collection. The St. James
Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, edited by Tom and Sara Pendergast (St. James, 2000), and the Salem Press's titles The
Fifties in America (Super, 2005), The Sixties in America (Singleton, 1999), and The Seventies in America (Super,
2006) are all good alternatives. These are multivolume sets and, as such, have more scope and depth. The ten-volume
set American Decades, edited by Vince Tomkins (Gale, 1994--) is another good choice for information for researchers
looking for information on those "middle aged persons" and the baby boom generation. Recommended as a
supplemental purchase for most libraries or only for private collections.--Carla Wilson Buss, Curriculum Materials &

A single-volume reference work of less than 250 pages, 2/he Baby Boomer Encyclopedia does manage to touch upon
the major figures, trends, and touchstones of this influential generation. Arranged alphabetically, the nearly 100 entries
cover the era from 1946 to the present and include politically significant events such as the JFK and MLK
assassinations, Watergate, and the Vietnam War. Profiled in one- to two-page articles are cultural and social movements
such as civil and women's rights, the environmental movement, trends in family makeup, and trends in political
inclinations, e.g., the rise of conservatism in the late 1970s and 1980s. Each article is followed by a "further reading"
bibliography that typically consists of secondary sources (chiefly books). Web resources such as government data from
the Census Bureau, or even the Web site of the AARP, are not included. A topical list of entries is featured, as is a
selected longer bibliography and index. This is an adequate, basic introduction for American social history students,
chiefly useful for upper-level high school or undergraduate students seeking research topics. It is also appropriate for
public library reference collections. For those seeking detailed analysis or rigorous scholarship, longer and more
specifically focused works will prove a better resource and use of collection development dollars. Readers may want to
consider works such as Boomer Bust, edited by R. B. Hudson (CH, Aug'09, 46-6910). Summing Up: Optional. *

This b&w photo-illustrated reference for students in high school and up presents about 100 cross-referenced entries on
the Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1965). From the anti-war movement and "All in the Family" to the
women's movement and Woodstock, the alphabetical entries cover key figures, trends, and events in politics, activism,
music, entertainment, pop culture, literature, religion, sports, and lifestyles. Special emphasis is placed on the Civil
Rights, anti-war, and environmental movements, and on rock and roll icons. Politically oriented entries focus on
significant events such as assassinations, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Iraq War. There
are also entries devoted to individual recreational drugs. Each entry ends with suggestions for books, articles, and
websites. An introduction offers a brief overview of the generation. The book includes a chronology from 1945 to 2010.

Gr 7 Up-Following a brief introduction and a "Chronology of Native American-U.S. Government Relations, 1804-
1891," this concise, chronologically arranged text places the massacre in context by concisely examining the "seeds of
the conflict" into the late 1860s; the fallout from Little Big Horn; the reemergence of the Ghost Dance; and, ultimately,
the worst slaughter of Native men, women, and children in American history. Gitlin gets behind the myth on both sides
and constructs a narrative that presents the facts of the tragedy. Along the way, readers are introduced to compelling
figures including Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and Crazy Horse, all charismatic leaders of the Plains Indians who attempted
to maintain cultural and political independence from white settlers and the U.S. government. Substantial back matter
includes lucid biographies of key figures and 13 primary documents, including Red Cloud's 1870 "Cooper Institute

While this reference for students in high school and up looks at factors that led to the Wounded Knee massacre in South
Dakota, overviewing the relations between white settlers, the US government, and the Plains Indian in the 18th and
19th centuries, the focus is on the events of the massacre itself. Material is organized chronologically, from the Battle of
Little Bighorn in 1876 to the slaughter of 300 Lakota Sioux at Wounded Knee in 1890. The book closes with an
examination of the massacre's legacy, including a discussion of the Native American siege of Wounded Knee in 1973.
Reference material includes a timeline of Native American-US government relations, biographies of key figures,
excerpts from primary documents (organized chronologically), and a glossary of Sioux terms as well as places and
legislation, plus an annotated bibliography. The book's reader-friendly layout and plain language make it accessible to

The name Billie Jean King may not be as well known as it once was, but it's certainly at home in the Legendary
Athletes series. Readers are initially drawn in by the story of the 1973 death match between King and Bobby Riggs--an
exhibition game to establish if a woman could beat a man in tennis. The accessible and well-written narrative moves
chronologically, beginning with King's early life before covering her tennis triumphs, including a more detailed
explanation of the King-Riggs tennis match and her life after she left the sport. Well integrated throughout is much
information about King's transformative role in society as a proponent of women's rights and as a bisexual. Without
being explicit, the book frankly discusses King's affair with her assistant, which led to a court battle, and the feelings
she had for both her husband and another woman tennis player. The sidebars sometimes seem oddly placed (one about
tennis serves appears alongside a description of the lawsuit), but the photos are nicely chosen. A time line, fact page,
source notes, and other back matter are appended.--Ilene Cooper

This entry in the Heroes of Racing series profiles a flamboyant figure who went behind the wheel at such an early age
that he had more than 100 victories before graduating from high school. Despite his youth, Gordon became a dominant
NASCAR driver in the 1990s, and Gitlin credits him with being a major force behind this style of racing's current
popularity. Though no direct interviews were conducted for this book, Gitlin draws a great deal from Gordoffs 2003
memoir, Jeff Gordon: Raeing Back to the Front, My Memoir. The quotations sometimes seem like sound bites, and
beyond Gordon's highly public divorce, there is little here about his life off the racetrack. But confirmed fans will
appreciate the close attention paid to the details of his career, whether about his victories at the SaveMart/ Kragen 350,
the USA Sheetrock 400, or the Daytona 500 (three times!) Closing with his strong showing in 2007, this portrait
includes occasional color photos, a bibliography, and end notes for quotes. Steer interested readers to NASCAR in the
Driver's Seat, by Mark Stewart and Mike Kennedy, reviewed below.--John Peters

Ohio-based journalist Gitlin chronicles the history and philosophy of the Ku Klux Klan, which was founded in 1865
and today maintains a presence in pockets around the US. A timeline opens the text, followed by six loosely
chronological chapters covering the following themes: origin of the Klan, its growth after the release of the 1915 film
Birth of a Nation, Klan terrorism during the Civil Rights era, attempts to depict a "cleaner" clan after 1970, the Klan
philosophy, and the demographics and motivations of members. Following are a glossary of terms used within the KKK
and biographical sketches of major leaders. Finally, 20 excerpts of primary press documents with reflections from the
author are provided, including notes from Stetson Kennedy's undercover infiltration of the Klan that resulted in the
group's secret codes being broadcast on the Superman radio show.

QUOTED: "Mr. Gitlin’s little book is a good introduction to the subject of cyber attacks."
Cyber Attack by Martin Gitlin and Margaret J. Goldstein
Posted by Sherry on 9/28/2015 in 2015, Current Events, General, Nonfiction | ∞
Well, I certainly know a lot more about cyber crime and computer security and hacking than I did before I read this young adult nonfiction treatment of the history and current state of cyber attacks on the information we keep in our computer networks, thumb drives, hard drives, cell phones and and other internet connected devices. I also don’t feel nearly as safe as I did before I read about worms and viruses and bots and phishing and ransomware and Blackshades and lots of other nasty cyber-stuff.
Cyber Attack provides students and computer innocents (like me) with a basic introduction to the state of the internet, security-wise. Anyone with an interest in the subjects of cyber crime and cyber warfare is going to want to go deeper, and a bibliography in the back of the book provides readers with several avenues for exploration. I was freaked out enough by the information in the 72 pages of this little book to want to go off-grid for the duration.
Did you know that the computer software called Blackshades, which can take over the camera in your personal computer and take pictures of you in your own home, is a reality, not a myth? According to the author, “one Dutch teenager used his copy of Blackshades to take secret pictures of women and girls on about two thousand computers.”
Did you know that the U.S. has been involved in a secretive cyber war with Iran, trying to shut down or damage their nuclear facilities and capabilities, since 2008? And it’s probably still going on.
Did you know that the Russian and Chinese governments are actively engaged in cyber spying and attacks on U.S. companies and government computer networks, trying to get information about our economic secrets as well as military and other governmental information? And they’ve been quite successful in stealing quite a bit of information that has been of use in business negotiations and could be useful in the future if we ever do have a military confrontation with either country.
Did you know that the entire nation of Estonia–government services, banks, media outlets and other computer networks—came under cyber attack in 2007 from hackers located inside Russia? And even when the hackers were identified, Russia refused to arrest them or do anything to restrain or punish them.
Maybe you knew a lot of this stuff and more that’s in the book, but I didn’t. Again, Mr. Gitlin’s little book is a good introduction to the subject of cyber attacks. And how can a simple little old woman keep her herself and her information secure? Well, says the book, “You could cancel your Internet service, ditch your cell phone, close your bank account, throw away your debit card, and turn off your electricity. You could quit school and never take a job, vote in an election, get a driver’s license, or fly on an airplane. Of course, such a solution is completely unrealistic.”
Of course, the information in this book, published in 2015, is already incomplete and out-dated, to some extent. There’s a publisher’s note in the front of the book:
“This book is as current as possible at the time of publication. However events change rapidly and hacks, big and small, occur on a daily basis. To stay abreast of the latest developments related to hacking, check the New York Times and other major national newspapers for current, up-to-date information.”
Here are a couple of hacking-related news items that were not included in the book because they just happened in 2015:
Hillary Clinton, our Secretary of State, kept her emails on a privateserver located in some part of her house. (Hackers’ goldmine!) She says her information was secure, but no one really knows. “Was her server hacked? We don’t know. Private servers are considered more difficult to protect, in general, than the ones big e-mail hosts like Google use.” (Everything we know about the Hillary Clinton emails, September 15, 2015)
A hackers’ group calling themselves The Impact Team stole and published the private information for millions of users of the website Ashley Madison, a portal for people (mostly men) who wanted to commit adultery. Reporters and cyber security insiders keep saying that if it could happen to Ashley Madison, it could happen to any company on the web. So just know that your financial and personal information is not really safe anywhere on the web.
And the cyber attacks go on.

In 1993 Jeff Gordon looked more like he should be working as a bag boy in a grocery store rather than soaking up the applause as the "youngest driver to ever win at the famed Daytona International Speedway." He had all the right stuff and would go on to be one of the best drivers of the decade. Reckless could have been his middle name when he first started out, but then he began to win some big time races.
Racing wasn't new to Jeff. In fact he won his first race at the tender age of five against much older children. From a BMX racing bike to NASCAR by the age of twenty-one was something else!
Jeff's stepfather John Bickford was his mentor and without him Jeff never would have gone anywhere. Later on his crew chief, Ray Evernham, picked up where John left off. Jeff was mature enough to realize "he had a great deal to learn as a rookie." He tacked a list in his garage that read:
"From Nobody to Upstart
From Upstart to Contender
From Contender to Winner
From Winner To Champion
From Champion to Dynasty"
Jeff was and is one of the most popular race car drivers in the history of the sport. I enjoyed the way Marty Gitlin wrote this book and stayed away from sheer statistical analysis like many sports books I've read. This biography gives the reader a real feel for Jeff Gordon, his personality and zest for life and his sport. On the back of the book there are career statistics, career achievements, a glossary, an index, an excellent section on notes and further recommended reading and web links.
Quill says: From that "Nobody," Jeff Gordon became a real somebody to contend with!
