SIDELIGHTS

Linda Broday is a writer based in Texas. She writes in the romance genre, and most of her novels are set in the Old West. Broday has also collaborated with other writers on joint novels and anthologies. One of these collaborations is a collection of short stories called Give Me a Texas Outlaw, about which a writer in Publishers Weekly remarked: “The stories emphasize emotion over sensation, creating a sweet, sunny anthology perfect for rainy-day reading.” In an interview with a contributor to the Word Wranglers website, Broday explained why she chooses to write about cowboys. She stated: “What I like about cowboys could fill a whole volume. But to keep it short, cowboys represent honor, respect for others, love for animals and the land, and the code they live by. They seem to know the secret of life and there’s something very striking about them from the way they carry themselves (that slow sexy amble) to the way they talk. Here in West Texas real cowboys are everywhere. I certainly don’t mind when they smile that crooked little grin, tip their hat and call me ma’am.”

Knight on the Texas Plains and The Cowboy Who Came Calling

In an interview with a writer on the Abbie Roads website, Broday described the plot of her 2002 novel, Knight on the Texas Plains. She stated: “Duel McClain has lost everything he’s ever loved: his wife, his son, his sense of self. But when a strange twist of fate—and a poker game he’ll never forget—leaves an innocent little girl in his care, Duel vows to defend his new family to his very last breath. If only he knew a single thing about taking care of babies. Just as Duel swears his life can’t get any more complicated, a beautiful woman stumbles into the light of his campfire, desperate for help.” A reviewer in Publishers Weekly commented: “Fans of historical romances will be pleased.” Anne Black, critic on the RT Book Reviews website, suggested: “Gentle readers be warned; this story is a tale of brutal spousal abuse and is told in unflinching detail.”

In The Cowboy Who Came Calling, Luke, the brother of Duel, protagonist of the previous novel, is hired to help a woman named Glory save her family’s land. Despite a rocky start, the two eventually fall in love. Black, the writer on the RT Book Reviews website, called the book “a compelling tale of one woman’s attempt to rekindle faith in the man she loves.”

Redemption

In 2005, Broday released Redemption. The volume was rereleased in 2017 under the title Texas Redemption. In an interview with Joyce Lamb, contributor to the Happy Ever After website, Broday described the book’s plot, stating: “This post–Civil War, Reconstruction story is set amid the backdrop of East Texas’ swamps and bayous. Brodie Yates, still hunted as the rebel spy, Shenandoah, goes home to visit his brother in the town of Redemption. Hungry, he stops at a café to eat and comes face-to-face with a woman he’d known only as Lavender Lil.” Broday continued: “He’d met and fallen in love with her in a brothel during the war and vowed to go back for her. Except the war and the aftermath prevented it. She’s even more beautiful than he remembered but it stings to have her pretend not to know him.”

A critic in Kirkus Reviews commented: “The chemistry and attraction between Laurel and Brodie feels authentic, and their love scenes are fun and sensual, though at times they can get bogged down with cliched language.” Referring to Broday, Kathe Robin, contributor to the RT Book Reviews website, suggested: “She brings strong characters and deep emotions into a very realistic western romance that pulls no punches.” Black, writing again on the RT Book Reviews website, noted: “Though the subject is difficult, Broday gives it due gravity and the story a believable ending.”

"Bachelors of Battle Creek" Series

Texas Mail Order Bride begins the “Bachelors of Battle Creek” series. It finds Delta Dandridge, a mail-order bride, arriving in Battle Creek expecting to marry Cooper Thorne. Cooper claims not to have sent for her, but he quickly falls for her anyway. “Broday’s first ‘Bachelors of Battle Creek’ historical . . . is packed with TV western clichés,” noted a Publishers Weekly critic. Though Robin, the writer on the RT Book Reviews website, acknowledged problems with the pacing, she stated: “As the action increases, readers will be glad they hung on for the ride.”

In Twice a Texas Bride, Callie and her nephew have been squatting on the ranch that used to be hers. Though she is initially wary, she falls for the ranch’s new owner, Rand. Shelley Mosley, critic in Booklist, described the volume as a “riveting tale of the Old West.” Writing again on the RT Book Reviews website, Robin remarked: “With a touching and gentle, yet rugged and real story, Broday captures the West—and readers’ hearts.”

Forever His Texas Bride tells of a red-haired women named Rayna, who opens the heart of a half-Iroquois man. A reviewer in Publishers Weekly described the novel as a “sweet but faltering story.” Maria Ferrer, critic on the RT Book Reviews website, noted that the book offered “a bone-chilling thrill.”

"Men of Legend" Series

To Love a Texas Ranger, first in the “Men of Legend” series, tells the story of Sam Legend, who saves a damsel in distress. “The nonstop action and tantalizing ending make for an appealing new series,” asserted Black, the contributor to the RT Book Reviews website. A writer on the Kirkus Reviews website remarked: “While die-hard historical Western romance fans may enjoy the book, clichéd writing, repetitive character descriptions, and too much telling and not enough showing make it hard to recommend.”

Two emotionally wounded people fall in love in The Heart of a Texas Cowboy. A Publishers Weekly critic remarked: “The exciting plot, rich setting, and superb writing will delight fans of historical romances.” “This compassionate, poignant marriage-of-convenience love story demonstrates Broday’s ability to bring a wide range of emotions to her characters,” asserted Robin on the RT Book Reviews website.

In To Marry a Texas Outlaw, a wanted man named Luke rescues and falls for a mysterious woman. Mosley, the Booklist writer, described the book as “an unforgettable journey through the Old West.” “This densely plotted historical continues Broday’s tradition of well-realized, emotionally rich novels,” asserted a contributor to Publishers Weekly.

    Bio
I’m a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical western romance. I’m a Texas girl through and through and reside in the panhandle. From an early age, I was lucky enough to discover wealth didn’t exactly pertain to money. Though my parents could barely afford the necessities, they managed to instill deep rooted values and a thirst for books. My favorite memories are the yearly road trips we made to California on Route 66 to visit grandparents. We’d stop at museums, trading posts, ghost towns and anything else that held our interest. I’m sure that’s where my love of history and the Old West was born.

I’ve been a “writer in training” my whole life. As young girls, my sister and I became obsessed with books. Many nights long after the house grew dark and everyone else was asleep, we’d lie beneath our covers and read by flashlight until we either reached the end of the book or our eyes got too heavy to see the words. Books opened up entirely new, exciting worlds that seemed limited only by our imaginations. I never imagined in a hundred years that I could create my own worlds. That undertaking seemed as far-fetched as scaling Mt. Everest. But write I did. It took me five years to finish that first novel and it will never be anything more than fire-starter material. With a small measure of confidence though, I wrote others that found their way onto an editor’s desk and then into bookstores.

Cowboys have always fascinated me so it’s no wonder that I love to write about them and their ladies and the struggles they endure in trying to carve out a small place to call home. It took some awfully tough men and women to settle this great country of ours.

I grew up watching TV westerns and hated that the cowboy always rode into the sunset all by his lonesome. I vowed to write stories that gave the cowboy someone to share his life with besides his trusty horse. I wanted him to marry that pretty woman he fell in love with, not leave her behind. That’s what I’ve endeavored to do and I think in that aspect I’ve succeeded. If I can capture one small portion of his grit and determination, that’s an added bonus. I want to show in my stories people who might’ve lived at one time. They’re ordinary, but they have more guts and more backbone than anyone.

Western romance is my passion. I feel truly blessed. Humble roots and the love of family have become focal points in my stories. I sincerely hope readers enjoy the characters and tales I strive to bring to life on the printed page.

I'm a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author and make my living writing western historical romance. I am truly fortunate to live in the Texas Panhandle on land where the American Indian and Comancheros once roamed. I'm inspired every single day. I've always been fascinated with cowboys and the American West way of life because to me these men and women embody the spirit and strength I want in my characters. My desire to keep history alive is what drives me. Also, these pesky characters in my head that refuse to go away! I can't imagine writing anything else. My wish is to touch a reader's heart in some way and have them coming back for more. If I can do that, I'll have succeeded.

I'm a regular contributor at www.PetticoatsandPistols.com and blog there every third Tuesday of the month. You can also find me at www.casablancaauthors.blogspot.com. I think it's important to promote western historical romance any way I can and that's what I strive to do.

My Best to each of you! May you always find a book that takes you on an unforgettable adventure.

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Linda! Please tells us about Texas Redemption.

Linda: When Sourcebooks decided to reissue Redemption (2005) with a new title, I was beyond excited to put it in readers’ hands again. This post-Civil War, Reconstruction story is set amid the backdrop of East Texas’ swamps and bayous. Brodie Yates, still hunted as the rebel spy, Shenandoah, goes home to visit his brother in the town of Redemption. Hungry, he stops at a café to eat and comes face-to-face with a woman he’d known only as Lavender Lil. He’d met and fallen in love with her in a brothel during the war and vowed to go back for her. Except the war and the aftermath prevented it. She’s even more beautiful than he remembered but it stings to have her pretend not to know him.

Laurel James has only one thing in mind — gaining respectability and finding redemption for what she was forced to become. Being the wife of the town mayor will bring about both. Only one big problem — she’s still in love with the mayor’s brother, Brodie, and he gives her an ultimatum. Break off the engagement within three days or he’ll reveal her past as a scarlet lady.

She knows she should tell Brodie the truth — that she was abducted at 15 and recently escaped the brothel where she was taken, but the secret is too painful and raw. Before she can break off her engagement, her fiancé is shot during a bank robbery and lies near death. As Laurel and Brodie fight the deep love they can’t claim, a sinister man rides into town. Has he come to kidnap and take her back to the brothel? Spread the information and ruin her? Or will he give the army Brodie’s whereabouts? It’s anyone’s guess.

One brother offers the redemption she seeks. The other his heart. Will she survive long enough to choose?

Joyce: Would you like to share a favorite moment from your writing career?

Linda: There have been so many it’s difficult to pick just one, but I think it has to be at a book signing for the release of my first book — Knight on the Texas Plains. First, let me explain what that book is about. A drifter who has no reason to keep living sits down at a poker table and wins a baby that his opponent wagers as his bet after he runs out of money. A lady came to my autographing and told me that she, too, was won in a poker game. I stared at her in disbelief. I didn’t realize that such a thing still happens in this day and age. Knowing it did validated my story more than anything else could. We talked for a bit and she told me the circumstances which were almost exactly as in my story. That book will be reissued in August.

Joyce: Do you write by the seat of your pants (pantser), or do you carefully plot your stories (plotter)?

Linda: I’m a panster. I want the story to unfold as I go and have the spontaneity that it needs to develop. I love to find surprises that almost knock me from my chair. And I want my story to feel fresh and new each time I sit down to write or I have no passion for it. Early on before I was published, I tried to plot everything out, not only the book, but each scene. That killed my creativity. I just can’t do it, but I support those writers who do plot. Everyone is different and there is more than one “right” way to write a book. Each person should do whatever works for them.

Joyce: What inspires your book ideas?

Linda: Everything around me inspires. Ha! If I’m breathing, I’m finding inspiration. I find it when I run across some historical fact that grabs me. From a TV or movie I watch. Commercials. A piece of a song or poetry. In dreams. I especially find inspiration from things that happened in my past. There are pieces of me in every book. But I found inspiration for Texas Redemption in a romance-writing workshop. I can’t recall the speaker, but she talked about creating heroines and said that you can make any woman into a heroine if you provide the right motivation — even a prostitute. The wheels started turning in my head and I immediately saw Laurel James. Laurel didn’t choose that life but rather it was forced on her. Back then, publishers avoided the subject of prostitution and if a lady worked in a brothel the writer had to make her a maid, cook or she kept the books. The speaker of this workshop encouraged me to go all-out and put Laurel down in the trenches, make it real. So I did and Dorchester Publishing bought it.

Joyce: Is there anything interesting that’s happened while researching a book?

Linda: Several things happened while researching Texas Redemption. This is set near the actual town of Jefferson on the banks of Big Cypress Bayou. Jefferson plays an important part in the story. It was one of the most important shipping ports in Texas until 1872. So much history there. I stayed in an old haunted hotel, The Excelsior, and what an experience. Although I didn’t specifically encounter any ghosts, I did “feel” something. In the middle of the sultry August night, I awoke and the room was freezing. I snuggled under the covers and a few minutes later it was warm again. The next day I took a ride on a small paddleboat through the moss-covered cypress in the swamps. That was kinda creepy. I came away from East Texas with the perfect “feel” for the story. Walking the land where my books are set has always proven invaluable.

Joyce: Is there a TV show you’ve recently binge-watched?

Linda: Oh, my goodness, yes! Poldark on PBS. I missed the entire first season so I’ve been trying to catch up. The show that’s set in the 1700s in Cornwall, England, is a tale of romance, intrigue, danger and love. Ross Poldark, a man of means, is married to a common scullery maid named Demelza and he offers no apology for it. The flame-haired beauty wants nothing except to be loved. The show is full of historical content, beautiful costumes and breathtaking coastal scenery. And it doesn’t hurt one bit that Aiden Turner (Ross Poldark) is one drop-dead, gorgeous man!

Joyce: What are three romance novels on your TBR list?

Linda: A Thousand Yesteryears by Mae Clair, Luck is No Lady by Amy Sandas, Claim Me, Cowboy by Charlene Sands.

Joyce: What’s your favorite snack or beverage while you’re writing?

Linda: Oh goodness, I’m a bad, bad girl. I always keep something like cookies, candy or pretzels near along with cups of hot tea. I have a horrible sweet tooth and I keep telling myself that the sugar will fuel my brain and provide inspiration — also help me type faster. (Shhh, don’t tell. My doctor will have a cow.)

    Joyce: What’s coming next?

Linda: Next up is The Heart of a Texas Cowboy (book two of my Men of Legend series) on May 2. After suffering a devastating loss, Houston Legend is forced to marry in order to give Lara Boone’s baby a name. He considers this nothing more than a job so isn’t prepared to fall in love. This marriage-of-convenience story is sparked with danger and suspense as he drives a herd of cattle from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas. He soon spots a group of riders following them, always staying the same distance back. Anyone who tries to take his cattle — or his wife — will have to face his guns.

Also — the reissue of Knight on the Texas Plains (No. 1 Texas Heroes series) comes out in August. A Christmas anthology in October and No. 3 Men of Legend (To Marry a Texas Outlaw) in November.

I’m currently finishing up the sequel to Knight on the Texas Plains and The Cowboy Who Came Calling (No. 2 Texas Heroes series).

    About Texas Redemption:

    Two brothers

    One woman

    A final chance to find…

    Redemption

Desperate to escape her dark past, Laurel James agrees to wed the mayor of a small east Texas town. With him, life will be quiet. Respectable. Safe. It should be everything she ever wanted.

And it is. Until Shenandoah rides back into town.

Shenandoah never thought he would find the woman he’s loved and lost…and he certainly never dreamed she’d be pledged to his brother. He knows he should step aside—he has nothing to offer a woman like Laurel James—but the moment their eyes meet, Shenandoah is lost. He can only find peace in her arms…but can redemption be more than a dream for a man who has known nothing but war?

Armchair Interview With – Linda Broday

    About Linda

( Connect With Her: Website / Facebook / Twitter )

Though I now reside in the Texas Panhandle, I grew up in a small town in New Mexico.

On your nightstand now: Actually, I have two and read back and forth on them.

    1. STARS GO BLUE by Laura Pritchett—about a woman’s journey with her Alzheimer’s father. This is beautifully written. I met Laura when she came to lecture at the university. I really envy her ability to wring so much emotion from her words.

    2. THEN SINGS MY SOUL by Sonny Sammons—this story is set in the Deep South with all its humor and irreverence. Sonny has a wonderful gift for storytelling. I feel as though I’m sitting down across from him and we’re sipping a mint julep!

Favorite book when you were a child: LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE books by Laura Ingalls Wilder—these books sparked my love for the old West and life on the frontier. Though I was only in the fourth grade, I knew I wanted to write stories set in that time period.

Your top five authors: Kaki Warner, Jodi Thomas, Lorraine Heath, Linda Lael Miller, Kathleen Rice Adams

Book you’ve faked reading: Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier – I found the book very draggy. I much preferred the movie. But when people asked me, I lied. The book was such a hit and I didn’t want to say that it didn’t hold my interest.

Book you’re an evangelist for: THE OUTSIDER by Penelope Williamson—I think this is perhaps the greatest western book of all time. The author is a masterful storyteller and has an amazing gift for capturing emotion and wringing every ounce of it from the pages. A hardened gunslinger staggers to the home of a Plain Woman. He lingers near death for days. She’s just suffered the loss of her husband who was murdered and is afraid to trust her heart or to risk being shunned by the strict religious community.

Book that changed your life: THE FLAME AND THE FLOWER by Kathleen Woodiwiss – this book was the first one I read that showed how powerful love could be—that love was gentle and kind. It was different and fresh from the others I’d read where the heroine suffered much abuse at the hands of the hero. This one didn’t and I knew how special it was. By this time, I already knew I wanted to be a writer, but The Flame and the Flower cemented the romance genre in my heart.

Favorite line from a book: “The wind caught his black duster, making it billow so that he looked like a crow, wings spread for flight, silhouetted against the pewter sky.” From THE OUTSIDER by Penelope Williamson

Which character you most relate to: Of mine: Delta Dandridge in TEXAS MAIL ORDER BRIDE. Delta is full of stubborn determination to get past the hurt and pain of her past. And when she found out she isn’t going to be Cooper’s mail order bride, she pulls herself up, grabs her pride and gets a job. That same plucky determination drives me every single day just about. Don’t give me lemons or I’ll make a pitcher of lemonade.

Book you most want to read again for the first time: TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee – this book captured my heart the first time I read it. I never tire of the timeless story with so many rich, memorable characters.

Tell me about YOUR book: Former saloon owner, Rand Sinclair, finally has his dream—land and a ranch. He knows two certainties—he’ll never fall in love again. Never Marry. Everyone in his life—from his parents to every woman he took a chance and opened his heart to—always leaves and he can’t take any more pain and disappointment. He’s closed off his heart and put a padlock around it.

In the dead of winter, he discovers a woman and six-year-old boy hiding in one of his outbuildings. They’re half-frozen and starving. He takes them into his home, feeds and gets them warm. One look at Callie Quinn tells Rand she’s running from something or someone. He can’t send her back out in the cold. So he offers her a job cooking for him and the future ranch hands he intends to hire.

In the days and weeks that follow, he learns a killer outlaw is after her and the boy. Rand assures Callie that whoever wants to harm her will have to go through him—and that will be a hell of a job.

While Rand is fast losing his fight to stop the attraction for her, the outlaw shows up and demands the boy, saying he’ll let Callie live if they’ll hand him over. Rand pushes all his chips to the center of the table. He risks everything…his name…and his heart…for the woman who’s awakened a fierce hunger for love.

Locked in a desperate battle to rid themselves of the outlaw’s special brand of terror, He reaches deep inside for every weapon in his arsenal. This is a fight to the finish and he’ll win, come hell or high water.

They seem to know the secret of life and there’s something very striking about them from the way they carry themselves (that slow sexy amble) to the way they talk. Here in West Texas real cowboys are everywhere. I certainly don’t mind when they smile that crooked little grin, tip their hat and call me ma’am."

    TUESDAY, APRIL 10
    Welcome Author Linda Broday!
Good morning, Word Wranglers! Joining us today, chatting about books but more importantly and cowboys is USA Today Best Selling author Linda Broday! Welcome, Linda, let's chat!

D'Ann: You write cowboys. What draws you to them?

Linda: Ha! What I like about cowboys could fill a whole volume. I certainly don’t mind when they smile that crooked little grin, tip their hat and call me ma’am.

D'Ann: Who is your favorite cowboy, living or fictional?

Linda: My favorite fictional cowboy is Johnny Diamond in my story Trouble in Petticoats in the GIVE ME A TEXAS OUTLAW anthology. Johnny is the complete package. He’s fearless and tough yet gentle and caring. Plus being tall and sexy as all get out didn’t hurt a bit.

As for a favorite living cowboy I’d have to say Sam Elliott. Now there’s a man who can still make my heart sit up and say “Howdy.”

D'Ann: Do you live on a farm or ranch? Ride? Shoot?

Linda: Can you believe that I’m a city girl? No ranch or farm to my name. I’ve only been on a horse a couple of times and the only thing I shoot are rubber bands. *sigh* I wouldn’t have made a very good cowgirl I’m afraid. Still, it sure is nice to dream!

D'Ann: If you could flash back into the old west, who would you like to spend a week with?

Linda: I think I’d choose Annie Oakley to hang out with. She was an interesting woman who lived life as she wanted and didn’t apologize. And she seemed to have a lot of fun with whatever she did. She sure got noticed. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t love to tour the country with Bill Cody and his Wild West Show. That must’ve been exciting.

D'Ann: What childhood book sticks with you to this day?

Linda: I think that would have to be Cinderella. I love that story. She went from rags to riches and earned every bit of joy that came her way. Plus, she got the handsome Prince, the glass slippers, and lived happily every after.

D'Ann: What contemporary authors do you read?

Linda: Jodi Thomas, Sharon Sala, Kat Martin, Helen R. Myers, Charlene Sands, and Debbie Macomber to name a few.

D'Ann: How does a story idea come to you?

Linda: More often than not, story ideas come from the blue when I’m least expecting it. Sometimes they’re from the line of a song, a movie, a snippet of conversation, a commercial, and even in dreams. I love it.

D'Ann: What’s the best thing about being a writer, for you?

Linda: That I get to do what I love and get paid for it. That I get to meet so many interesting people both online and in person. But the main thing is that I love being able to create something from a spark of an idea and turn it into a story that can touch someone or make them look at something in a whole different way.

D'Ann: What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?

Linda: Never ever give up. I had enough rejection letters to wallpaper my office but I never quit. I just kept honing my craft and tightening my stories until I finally sold. The key to becoming a published writer is perseverance. That’s it plain and simple.

D'Ann: Do you have any thoughts for the aspiring writer?

Linda: Who doesn’t dream of fame and fortune? The sad fact is that most writers will never make a whole lot of money. If you’re writing because you think you’ll get rich, you need to stop now.

Join writing groups and learn how to improve the way you write. I honestly don’t think I’d be a published author today if I hadn’t joined Romance Writers of America and my local writing chapter. They’ve provided invaluable help. Another big thing I think is to find the joy and hang onto it. If you don’t love what you’re doing you’ll most likely never sell anything.

Me: Tell me about an experience that had a profound impact on your life?

Linda: There have been so many – being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, finally publishing my first book or making the New York Times bestseller list. It was very difficult to choose one. But I think what had the biggest impact on my life was surviving a devastating tornado and the aftermath that followed. The tornado happened in 1979 in Wichita Falls, Texas. It was a mile wide and barreled right through our house. My husband and I barely had time to get our two kids and baby into a hallway. I knew it was going to be bad. We laid on top of the children and I didn’t see any way of making it out alive. The deafening sound, the walls buckling, the roof and debris raining down on top of us. It seemed like we laid there a lifetime with our house disintegrating around us but I know it was probably five minutes or less. When it was over, we dug out from under the mountain of debris. Devastation lay as far as I could see. For all I knew the whole town was gone. The wind had sucked the shoes off my oldest children’s feet but, except for a minor cut on top of my baby’s head, we were all unhurt. We lost every single thing we owned and were homeless for a year, living with first one relative then another. We were dependent on family for even the basic necessities. I learned to appreciate the small things more and be grateful for a place to lay my head. I worried about my older children. They slept fully clothed, including their shoes, every night for about a year, afraid that the tornado would come again and they wanted to be ready. Such a horrible, horrible time of displacement. I came away with a greater sympathy for the homeless because I knew what it was like.

Me: What personality trait of yours helps you most as an author?

Linda: I have this dogged persistence and when I get my teeth in something, I won’t let go or give up. This pushes me forward and provides the drive I need to keep writing. And it’s why I won’t let MS rule my life.

Me: What personality trait of yours hinders you most as an author?

Linda: I’m a perfectionist and more than a little OCD. That need to make things perfect slows me down. I keep going back and going over what I’ve already written instead of moving forward. I’m working to change this and it is getting better.

Me: What was your high point as a writer—a time when you were happiest, on cloud nine, flying high? What happened?

Linda: I had always dreamed of making the New York Times bestseller list. Man, I wanted that. So in 2011, I finally made it with A Texas Christmas. It didn’t matter that it was an anthology. I made it! Talk about being excited. I walked around for months with my feet off the ground.

Me: What was your low point as a writer—a time when you questioned your path, a time when you felt really crappy about your writing? What happened? How did you get over it?

Linda: The lowest point I’ve been was in 2006 following the death of my husband. I just didn’t see how I could go on and the truth is, for the first 8 months I prayed to die every night when I went to sleep. All the words were frozen in my head. I couldn’t even write emails. I stopped living. I’m grateful that I didn’t have a contract to fulfill.

That was a blessing and allowed me to heal without pressure. I had just dropped into a dark pit and climbing out was almighty hard. Slowly, I began to hear the stories in my head again. Then writer friends of mine, Jodi Thomas and Phyliss Miranda, called in June the next year with an offer to join them in writing an anthology for Kensington. I was really scared that I couldn’t deliver but I said yes. We went on to publish five more and then I was strong enough to resume writing full length novels.

Me: Which of your characters are you most like and why?

Linda: I’m most like Jessie Foltry in my latest book Knight on the Texas Plains. She’s faced unbelievable heartache and trials but refuses to let her past rule her life. She has a lot of love she’s aching to give and her strength and dogged determination push her forward and reach for the man whose arms she can’t forget.

Me: Who is your book boyfriend?

Linda: That would have to be Luke Weston in To Marry a Texas Outlaw – Book #3 Men of Legend that comes out in November. Luke is a wounded soul. He killed his first man at fourteen and has been through sheer hell. My heart went out to this man, I ached over each bitter disappointment. He’s an outlaw but he’s trying very hard to change so he won’t bring shame to the family he just learned he has. The need to belong goes bone deep. He yearns to claim the Legend name and accept his birthright but he can’t until he straightens out his life. I see such honor and love in him, hidden beneath his hard exterior. He’s full of so much regret and longing for all he’s been denied. I just love the depth of his heart.

Me: What is your life’s motto? Why does it speak to you?

Linda: Always do your best and when life knocks you down, get right back up. It reminds me to keep trying and pushing forward even when trials come.

Me: Tell me a little bit about your Historical Western Romance novel KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS!

Linda: Duel McClain has lost everything he’s ever loved: his wife, his son, his sense of self. But when a strange twist of fate—and a poker game he’ll never forget—leaves an innocent little girl in his care, Duel vows to defend his new family to his very last breath. If only he knew a single thing about taking care of babies…

Just as Duel swears his life can’t get any more complicated, a beautiful woman stumbles into the light of his campfire, desperate for help. Jessie Foltry is hungry, tired, and running for her life. She agrees to help Duel care for the child in exchange for his protection, even as she fights to guard her broken heart. But Duel will do whatever it takes to make Jessie see that the Texas plains have more than one kind of knight, and perhaps their salvation is closer than either of them could have dreamed…

Me: Share a little of KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS with us.

    Linda:
In the midst of the blaze of color, the tall figure of Duel stood alone, facing the haunting demons that almost had destroyed his will to live. Head bowed, he knelt, then sat cross-legged amid the wildflowers that blanketed the grave. Not strong enough yet, she sensed, to slay the demons. Instead, he sized them up in the true fashion of a gunfighter who eyed his enemies before a duel.

Maybe someday her brave knight would fight that battle—and win. For Marley Rose’s sake, Jessie prayed that day would come soon.

“He’ll love you like a daughter, little one,” she murmured against Marley’s soft black curls. “I know he will, even though his heart still aches with pain.”

“Pa pa.” The child gently patted the windowpane. Her serious expression suggested understanding despite the impossibility of it.

    * * *
I love this section of the book because it provides the catalyst for change. Duel says goodbye to his old life here and is finally able to put aside the wife and child he lost. He’s able to focus on being a husband and father to Jessie and the child he rescued. The depth of his heart amazes me.

* To Marry a Texas Outlaw.
By Linda Broday.
Nov. 2017. 384p. Sourcebooks/Casablanca, paper, $7.99 (9781492630234).
On his way to even the score with the notorious Ned Sweeny, who framed him for murder, gunslinger Luke Weston
rescues a woman who's been kidnapped by two outlaws. He'd love to return her safely to her home, but she remembers
nothing, not even her name. As Luke continues his quest for Sweeny, he discovers things about this gorgeous woman
that make her even more mysterious. For instance, where did she learn her expert marksmanship, and why is her
language so salty? All Luke knows is that he admires her courage and gumption, and every day on the trail, he's falling
for her a little bit more. A gunslinger who's better than he thinks he is; a lovely amnesiac; a young, wannabe gunslinger;
an abused boy; a scruffy dog; and a sadistic killer make the third book (following To Love a Texas Ranger, 2016, and
The Heart of a Texas Cowboy, 2017) in Broday s outstanding family saga, Men of Legend, an unforgettable journey
through the Old West. Fans of historical western romances by such authors as Jodi Thomas and Georgina Gentry will
be sure to add Broday to their lists of favorites. --Shelley Mosley

To Marry a Texas Outlaw: Men of Legend, Book 3
Linda Broday. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-1-49263023-4
Broday's dramatic third Men of Legend romance (after The Heart of a Texas Cowboy) centers on Luke Weston, a halfSpanish
outlaw on the 19th-century Texas frontier. Luke, who has been falsely accused of killing a federal judge, wants
to clear his name, which means finding the real killer. But rescuing an amnesiac woman from a posse of thugs
complicates his search. As Josie Morgan tries to regain her memory and they fall prey to their strong mutual attraction,
the two travel all over seeking their answers. Luke's insistence that he is unworthy of love and unable to settle down
comes across as a sincere, as do his fierce protection of the weak and powerful anger toward abusers. The pair
encounter boastful bounty hunters and an abused little boy, navigate Luke's strained relationship with his father and
half-brothers, and use Josie's impressive acting abilities and Luke's steely gunslinging to survive battles. This densely
plotted historical continues Broday's tradition of well-realized, emotionally rich novels. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot

Knight on the Texas Plains
Linda Broday. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-1-49264650-1
In Broday's strong first Texas Heroes historical romance, a marriage of necessity develops into genuine love in 19thcentury
Texas. Duel McClain has little to live for until he wins a baby girl in a poker game. The same night, a blooded,
bruised, frantic' woman, Jessie Foltry, rushes into his camp and begs for help. Duel pledges his protection and offers to
take her back home to his family's ranch in Tranquility if she'll help raise his unexpected daughter. Once settled, she
admits to having killed her abusive husband. To help keep her past a secret, Jessie and Duel stage a quickie marriage,
but hiding her crime gets more complicated when Duel's younger brother, Texas Ranger Luke, comes looking for the
fugitive husband-killer. Broday (the Men of Legend series) has a knack for capturing the hesitations of both Duel and
Jessie and unfurling a twisting plot without resorting to melodrama. Through carefully deployed flashbacks, she slowly
exposes the horrors of Jessie's marriage, culminating in a truly grisly image of depravity without overwhelming the
tender love story. Fans of historical romances will be pleased. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot Fortune. (Aug.)

Broday returns to the tough but tender men of Texas's Lone Star Ranch in her thrilling second Men of Legend 19thcentury
western (after To Love a Texas Ranger). Houston Legend shuts himself off from love after his fiancee's death
exposes how she deceived him. Then his father loses some land in a poker game, and to get it back, he arranges for
Houston to marry Lara Boone, the daughter of his poker rival. Lara was assaulted by the villainous Yuma Blackstone,
who left her scarred and pregnant; Houston honorably gives her child the Legend name. Newly wed, Lara and Houston
set out on a cattle drive across unforgiving and dangerous land, and soon discover that Yuma is stalking them. When he
starts killing off Houston's men, the Legends seek the help of friendly Cherokees, a polygamist family, a libidinous
young couple, and others as they rush toward safety. Broday brilliantly captures Lara and Houston's hesitations and
growing love. At times it's hard to reconcile Houston's extreme gentleness toward his wife and daughter with his
furious rage at Yuma, but the combination makes him a very desirable hero. The exciting plot, rich setting, and superb
writing will delight fans of historical romances. Agent: Gail Fortune, Talbot Fortune Agency. (May)

In an East Texas town called Redemption, actual redemption doesn't come easy.Laurel James has finally escaped her
scandalous past to settle in the small town of Redemption, where she works in Ollie's Cafe and is engaged to
respectable Murphy Yates. Murphy doesn't know that during the Civil War, Laurel was abducted from her family by a
villain named Will Taft and sold into prostitution in St. Louis. Known there as Lavender Lil, she did what she needed to
in order to survive. Yet a Confederate spy named Shenandoah promised dreams of rescue before he disappeared and left
her heartbroken. Now, in 1869, the man she once knew as Shenandoah has mysteriously reappeared. In fact, he is
Murphy Yates' brother, Brodie, and he holds the power to uncover Laurel's disreputable past. Brodie is opposed to the
marriage, of course, but he can't say whether it's because of Laurel's deceit about her identity or his own buried feelings
for the woman he left behind in St. Louis. He gives Laurel one week to break off the engagement to Murphy, with a
veiled threat to expose her. Before she can come up with a plan, Murphy is shot during a bank robbery and comes
dangerously close to death. Suddenly, both Brodie and Laurel feel a renewed loyalty to him, all the while embarking on
an escapade to seek outlaws and knowledge of their own hearts. Author Broday's charming mix of Texas vernacular,
history, and storytelling, along with her earnest characters who care about family above all, makes this an enjoyable if
somewhat long romantic adventure. The chemistry and attraction between Laurel and Brodie feels authentic, and their
love scenes are fun and sensual, though at times they can get bogged down with cliched language. Great for fans of
history, romance, and some good old Texas grit.

Broday finishes her Bachelors of Battle Creek trilogy (after Twice a Texas Bride) with this sweet but faltering story. In
1879, mustang wrangler Brett Liberty seeks solitude on the Texas plains, only to find the heart of a feisty young
woman. A chance meeting as they share a jail cell Is all it takes for sparks to ignite between Brett and Rayna Harper.
He falls for her gentle touch and fiery hair. She mostly likes the moccasins he's promised that she'll inherit after he's
hanged by a racist sheriff for the "crime" of being part Iroquois. Thanks to a timely intervention, they're both freed and
he's able to take her to Battle Creek, Tex., to start her new life. But where Rayna goes, trouble usually follows. The
story bounces back and forth between battles and intimacy with impressive regularity, with a little bit of every
imaginable western romance trope and Native American stereotype thrown in for good measure. New readers may feel
disconnected from some of the characters, especially since many of them are only very briefly revisited. Agent: Gail

Four honorable outlaws find romance in this uneven collection of novellas, the fourth from this group of writers (after
2010's Give Me a Texas Ranger). In headliner Thomas's flimsy "The Outlaw," pretty little liar Cozette cons outlawwith-a-heart-of-gold
Michael into marrying her so she can inherit her neglectful father's ranch. In Broday's strong
"Trouble in Petticoats," Larissa Patrick falls for wily Johnny Bravo when her father hires him to rescue her young sister
from kidnappers. Outlaw Savannah Parker finds hope for justice--and redemption--in the arms of Texas Ranger Ethan
Kimble in Miranda's "Texas Flame," which deftly weaves layers of secrets into a narrative that keeps readers guessing.
Pace's delightful "Most Wanted" Captures the flavor and diversity of the genuine Old West as retired gunslinger
Shadow Rivers pays back an old friend by helping distressed damsel Odessa Kilmore. The stories emphasize emotion
over sensation, creating a sweet, sunny anthology perfect for rainy-day reading. (July)

When Rand Sinclair discovers a ragged woman and a little boy hiding in his barn, he figures they have a secret. What
he doesn't know is how big their secret is and how many more things they're keeping to themselves. Most important, he
doesn't know that this secret could get all of them killed. Broday has created an honorable hero who has to learn to trust
again; a sadistic villain and his evil, outlaw brothers; and a beaten-down but brave heroine determined to keep those she
loves alive, even if it means sacrificing herself to do so. Broday's novel tugs at readers' heartstrings while keeping them
on the edge of their seats in suspense. Those who enjoy historical western romances by such authors as Kaki Warner
and Maggie Osborne will also be captivated by this riveting tale of the Old West, the second book in Broday's
Bachelors of Battle Creek series, following Texas Mail Order Bride (2015).

The authors' sixth Texas-themed collaboration (after Give Me a Texas Ranger) is all hat and no cattle. Thomas's quietly
effective story unites a two-time widow and an itinerant Yankee cowboy looking for human comfort in a lonely world.
Nuanced writing brings the couple to almost cinematic life. Far less readable is Broday's story, which reunites two
characters duped into believing they were betrayed by each other. The responsible party is obvious, and a second villain
is so nasty he actually kicks pregnant dogs. In Miranda's contrived contribution, a former heiress returns from back East
to live . like Cinderella with her uncle and his rude family. Pace wraps things up with her story of a wheelchair user and
a doctor brought together by pet lovebirds. The terminally cute premise and the heroine's spoiled, meddlesome sister
sink the story. (Jan.)

Broday's first Bachelors of Battle Creek historical, set in 1878 Texas, is packed with TV western cliches. Cooper
Thorne and his two buddies formed a brotherhood bond during their childhood years at an orphanage. Now someone's
played Cooper for a fool and ordered him a bride. He quickly tells Delta Dandridge it's all a mistake, but she's escaping
her own past and refuses to return to it. After she lands a job at the mercantile, she charms everyone in Battle Creek--
including Cooper. The episodic story jolts from one melodramatic scenario to the next: someone infects Cooper's cattle
with a deadly disease, a man beats his pregnant wife, and Cooper and Delta abruptly go from standoffish to smoochy.
There's little real history underpinning the story, and much of the sparse character development goes toward setting up
Cooper's brothers to be protagonists of future installments. (Jan.)

    KNIGHT ON THE TEXAS PLAINS
    Author(s): Linda Broday
The Dead Man's hand saves his life. The legendary combo of Aces and Eights becomes a lucky hand for Duel McClain when he ends up winning Marely Rose. This mistreated toddler wakes the once-famous bounty hunter from years of grief and forces him to turn to his family for help. On his way home, he encounters a woman wearing blood and little else.
He takes her home, where Jessie, out of options and hope, finds kindness from Duel and salvation from the little girl. But her past forces her to accept Duel's proposal—strictly a business deal to ensure Marely's safety.
Their newfound family happiness lasts only until Duel's brother, Texas Ranger Luke McClain, arrives. He's hunting Jessie, who is accused of killing her husband. Jessie confesses and must go to trial.
Even though their time together is brief, Duel discovers that Jessie's love has brought him the family he thought he'd never have, and that to save the woman he loves, he will have to face his own past and ask forgiveness.
Gentle readers be warned; this story is a tale of brutal spousal abuse and is told in unflinching detail. After years of torture, Jessie fights her way to freedom, suffering physical and emotional trauma, yet able to find a loving and healthy connection with Duel almost instantly. This reader found the extreme violence real, but the quick healing somewhat difficult to believe. This novel contains explicit violence, but no sex. (Oct., 320pp., $5.99)

    THE COWBOY WHO CAME CALLING
    Author(s): Linda Broday
Linda Broday's sequel is a compelling tale of one woman's attempt to rekindle faith in the man she loves. Luke McClain is no longer the brash Texas Ranger we met in his brother's story; broken by false accusations, he now hunts for vengeance.
Glory Day is out to save her family ranch any way she can, and bringing in a famous outlaw is the surest bet. But Luke and Glory tangle, and she ends up shooting him then taking him in to recover. While in her care, he charms her entire family and offers what seems like victory.
But Glory can't trust Luke's generosity, not when she keeps a devastating secret sure to ruin what's left of her family. Between the greedy bank manager and an outlaw bent on revenge, Glory and Luke are forced to accept the help of family and friends before facing love's final test.
This tale is sure to touch western romance fans seeking a sentimental love story. SENSUAL (Aug., 352 pp., $5.99)

    TEXAS MAIL ORDER BRIDE
    Author(s): Linda Broday
Broday introduces readers to three memorable heroes, a small town and one feisty Southern beauty. She spices up the sweet and gritty tale with plenty of adventure, meddlesome townsfolk and some ruthless villains. A slow start leaves the pacing uneven, but as the action increases, readers will be glad they hung on for the ride.
Cooper Thorne’s ranch is thriving and he’s content with his life in Battle Creek — until mail-order bride Delta Dandridge arrives. Delta is looking for a new start, and Cooper’s proposal is the answer to her prayers. Cooper, however, denies writing to her, and claims he will never marry, so Delta must take charge of her life. But now Cooper can’t get her off his mind — or out of his heart — but he also can’t risk falling in love. Someone is sabotaging his ranch, and the ghosts of his past have returned to destroy everything he cherishes. (SOURCEBOOKS, Jan., 352 pp., $7.99)

    TWICE A TEXAS BRIDE
    Author(s): Linda Broday
Broday crafts a richly atmospheric Western complete with the grittiness of the frontier as well as the tenderness of blossoming love. With characters from her previous novel, a delightful young boy, an orphaned baby girl and a raggedy dog, Broday proves love and trust can make a family as much as blood can. With a touching and gentle, yet rugged and real story, Broday captures the West — and readers’ hearts.
Callie has every reason not to trust men, but Rand Sinclair might change her mind. Rand has just bought an abandoned ranch when he finds Callie, along with a young boy, in his bunkhouse. He has no idea the ranch was once her home, or that Toby is her nephew — and the outlaw Nate Fleming’s son. Callie’s vulnerability and wariness touch Rand. He is determined to prove to her that he’s one man she can trust, and when she needs his help, he’s there. He’ll marry her to help her keep Toby, save her from her enemies, even help her find her own daughter. Most of all, he’ll give her his heart, and it’s this unconditional love that frees Callie from fear and helps her open her heart to the love she deserves. (SOURCEBOOKS, May, 378 pp., $7.99)

    CHRISTMAS IN A COWBOY’S ARMS
Author(s): Leigh GreenwoodRosanne BittnerLinda BrodayMargaret BrownleyAnna SchmidtAmy Sandas
A coterie of Western writers explore the very heart of the holiday season: the love of home, family and friends. The beauty of the season melds with the harsh reality of the Wild West in magical ways as each author delves into an aspect of Christmas. These well-paced, carefully crafted, tough and tender tales sweep readers into stories that are often tied to an author’s series and bring an extra added attraction for their fans. Best of all, everyone will be uplifted and believe in the joy and wonder of the season through these wonderful novellas.
“Father Christmas” is Greenwood’s gift as a lone spinster and a man on the run find unexpected love. Mary is pregnant and attempting to hold the ranch together when Joe arrives. Joe admires Mary’s fortitude, determination and pride, but falling in love is a surprise.

Readers have come to know Jake Harkner’s family from Bittner’s Outlaw series, but in “A Chick-A-Dee Christmas” they will see a new side to the tough man. As the holidays approach, the happiest of times turns to tragedy as Jake’s granddaughter Sadie Mae, is near death. Is it possible there’s a miracle left for the Harkner’s?

After spending years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit, Hank is drifting through the Texas plains when he’s caught off guard by a snowstorm and rescued by Sidalee, who brings him to the Legends’ ranch in Broday’s “The Christmas Stranger.”

“A Texas Ranger for Christmas” by Brownley is a heartwarming novella. Sadie has already lost her father to the Texas Rangers and now Ranger Captain Cole Bradshaw has let her know that her husband is dead, too. Sadie is a strong woman, but with an infant and a ranch to care for, Cole realizes that he can’t just walk away.

In Schmidt’s beautifully rendered novella, “A Christmas Baby,” the birth of a baby brings together families torn apart by racial prejudice. Louisa’s love’s for Rico is pure and beautiful. But to Louisa’s father it is an abomination. Yet their forbidden love flourishes, and together they vow to build a new life.

The Runaway Brides are back in Sandas’ “A Christmas Reunion.” Blindfolded and taken from his office, Dr. Warren Reed must care for an outlaw wounded in a robbery gone wrong. He finds the woman he loved long ago nursing her brother. Honey believed she was only a summer fling for Warren and he thought she betrayed him by marrying soon after he left. It will take a lot of explaining and holiday magic to bring them together again. (SOURCEBOOKS, Oct., 512 pp., $7.99)

After narrowly escaping death, Sam Legend boards a train back to his family’s ranch but, on the journey, is embroiled in a woman’s escape from brutal captors and helped by an enigmatic ally he’s not sure he can trust.

Miraculously saved by a stranger after being nearly hanged by a group of cattle rustlers, Texas Ranger Sam Legend doesn’t feel able to do his job safely and adequately. Taking time off, he heads home to his family’s huge ranch, but on the train he runs into Sierra Hunt, who has escaped from the villainous Ford gang. Sam vows to help her, and the two flee the train at a remote stop, only to be followed by Ford and his men as well as a fellow passenger who's wounded helping them. Sam recognizes him as thief Luke Weston, who, it turns out, is also his half brother. Trailed by the outlaws, the three cross Texas on horseback, then team up with a caravan of Mexican refugees who help them treat Luke's wounds. Once they reach the ranch, Sam and Sierra give in to the attraction they fought on the road, while Luke has to adjust to the idea of family, which he’s not so sure about, even while he keeps a slew of secrets: a bounty hangs over his head, and the true villains are still on the hunt for Sierra. Broday launches a new series that revolves around the Legend family, and while die-hard historical Western romance fans may enjoy the book, clichéd writing, repetitive character descriptions, and too much telling and not enough showing make it hard to recommend. Plus, Sam’s description of his feelings after lovemaking—“If the world stopped revolving, spinning slowly down to die…”—is both corny and lifted from a 1970s ballad by Bread.

An appealing story idea with sluggish and disappointing execution.

Delta Dandridge’s prospects are bleak at best. Her mother has died, and she has no means of support. Desperate, she answers an ad for a mail-order bride, and after receiving a few romantic letters, she leaves Atlanta for the tiny town of Battle Creek, Texas. Rancher Cooper Thorne, owner of the Long Odds Ranch, is being targeted by an unknown enemy who is deliberately exposing his healthy cattle to hoof-and-mouth disease. That’s bad enough. Now this woman shows up in town, claiming to be his fiancée. Cooper has plenty of problems without adding a woman to the equation. After all, he is the cofounder of the Battle Creek Bachelor’s Club, and he doesn’t intend to lose his membership. Readers will enjoy the witty banter, the colorful descriptions, the mystery of the villain’s identity, and, most of all, the obstinate hero and heroine. This entertaining war of the sexes seems mighty large in a town so small there’s only one of everything. Broday (Redemption, 2012) will appeal to fans of such authors as Georgina Gentry, Leigh Greenwood, and Jodi Thomas.
