SIDELIGHTS

Michael Johnston is an architect and writer. He attended college at Lehigh University, where he studied architecture and ancient history. He received his master’s degree in architecture from Columbia University. Following graduation, Johnston worked as an architect in New York City. He then moved to Los Angeles and continued working as an architect

As a child, Johnston was an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy books. When he moved to Los Angeles he began a routine of architectural work during the day and novel-writing at night. After several years of this schedule, he had written a fantasy novel inspired by the history of ancient Egypt and the story of King Lear. Johnston retired from architectural work and writes full-time. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, writer Melissa de la Cruz, and their daughter.

Frozen

The first in Johnston and de la Cruz’ “Heart of Dread” series, Frozen takes place in frozen, grim, dystopian world. The world is covered in pockets of polluted ice, littered with mountains made of trash and surrounded by contaminated water. The book is both science fiction and fantasy, as the icy waters are filled with magical creatures.

The story opens in New Vegas, a city in what is now called the Remaining States of America, that exists for those with funds to distract themselves with gambling. Nat Kestral, a 16-year-old blackjack dealer in New Vegas, has come into possession of a mysterious map. She believes it may be a map to “Blue,” a rumored land of clean air and pure land, that many have tried, and failed, to find.

Nat is “marked,” meaning she has secret powers. “Marked” people are often feared for their abilities, which vary in powers ranging from telekinesis, self-healing, or telepathic powers, but they all have brightly colored eyes. Nat decides to follow the map in hopes of finding mystical “Blue.” To get there, she befriends teenage Ryan Wesson, called Wes, to help bring her across the frozen ocean. While the journey grows evermore dangerous, the two teens begin to feel an attraction to one another.

Stolen

In Stolen, the second in the “Heart of Dread” series, Nat has left Wes in order to fight for her lost homeland, Vallonis. Flying across the lands on a magical drakon, she finds support in the people she comes across, including humans pilgrimaging to find “Blue.”

Wes has returned to his life in New Vegas. While attempting to find his lost sister, he is captured by the army and reenlisted against his will. As the two teens continue in their personal journeys, they also find themselves pulled back together.

Soleri

Soleri,  a standalone novel, nopens with an introduction to Ren Hark-Wadi, son of Arko Hark-Wadi, the king of Harkana, one of the four kingdoms of Soleri. The Solari empire maintains control over its kingdoms by holding the sons of their kings hostage. Although Ren is hostage, when his father is summoned to meet with the emperor it means both that Ren will be released as prisoner and that his father Arko will be murdered.

The godlike rulers of Soleri never appear in public, because if a human sees the face of one of the leaders, they will die. Instead, the Soleri rulers appoint a First Ray, a human that serves as the messenger between the demigods and their subjects.

Arko is summoned by the emperors, essentially a guaranteed death, at the same time that his estranged wife, Sarra Amunet, becomes the next First Ray. Sarra must secretly convince the emperor to spare Arko, while simultaneously figuring out why the sacred grain of Soleri is dying. A contributor to Publishers Weekly wrote, “Johnston relies on history and myth to ground his work, but the uneasy mix of ancient practices of marriage and modern sensibilities toward love muddy the characters’ motivations and make reader loyalties uncertain.”

Michael Johnston was born in 1973 in Cleveland, Ohio. As a child and a teen he was an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy. He studied architecture and ancient history at Lehigh University and during a lecture on the history of ancient Egypt, the seed of an idea was born. He earned a master’s degree in architecture from Columbia University, graduating at the top of his class. Michael worked as an architect in New York City before moving to Los Angeles. Sparked by the change of locale, a visit to the desert, and his growing dissatisfaction with the architectural industry, he sought a way to merge his interests in architecture and history with his love of fantasy. By day he worked as an architect, but by night he wrote and researched an epic fantasy novel inspired by the history of ancient Egypt and the tragic story of King Lear. After working this way for several years, he shut down his successful architecture practice and resolved to write full time. He now lives and writes in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.

Soleri. By Michael Johnston. June 2017.368p. Tor, $27.99 (9780765386489); e-book (9780765386496).
Johnston's latest fantasy saga follows several members of the Hark-Wadi family, rulers of the Harkana kingdom. The
story begins by introducing the reader to Ren Hark-Wadi, son and heir of Arko Hark-Wadi, king of Harkana. Ren, as
called for by tradition, was ransomed to the Priory as a toddler. This ransom causes his father to feel extreme guilt, as
Ren's grandfather was killed fighting to keep Arko out of the Priory. Readers also meet Ren's father, Arko, his sisters
Merit and Kepi and their significant others, Sarra Amunet, Mother Priestess of the Desouk, and Amen Saad, Sword of
Mithra and Father Protector. Soleri is a twisting tale of ambition and betrayal. Every time a question is answered, more
are raised. Relationships are not always what they seem to be; people are not always who they seem to be. The story is
like a snake, twisting and turning on itself. Readers will be looking for the next book in the series, as there are questions
to be answered, relationships to be explored, and quite possibly a war or two to be fought.--Lois Ray

Johnston, Michael SOLERI Tor (Adult Fiction) $27.99 6, 13 ISBN: 978-0-7653-8648-9
First installment of a fantasy series featuring a power struggle over the remains of an ancient empire, from the co-author
(with wife Melissa de la Cruz) of the Heart of Dread trilogy (Golden, 2016, etc.).The vast Soleri empire controls its four
subject kingdoms by holding the kings' heirs hostage. Since the godlike Soleri rulers never appear in public--it's death to
look upon their faces--a human First Ray serves as intermediary between them and the people. King Arko Hark-Wadi of
Harkana never became a hostage (his father fought a war to prevent it), but Arko's son, Ren, isn't so fortunate. While
Ren's older sisters, Merit and Kepi, quarrel over marriage to a neighboring king, Arko receives a summons to attend the
emperor (a virtual death sentence), thus triggering Ren's release. Meanwhile, Sarra Amunet, Mother Priestess of the
imperial sun god cult and also Arko's estranged wife, schemes against a powerful rival to become the next First Ray.
Her main duty is to preside over the annual eclipse ceremony, or Devouring, but, ominously, the eclipse fails to occur
for the first time since the empire's founding. These developing plotlines gradually expose the empire's rotten heart, with
gods nobody believes in, imperial weakness concealed by a ruthlessly bureaucratic cruelty, and impending mass
starvation. The hardworking backdrop borrows heavily from ancient Egypt and similar sources, but the sensibilities
displayed are entirely modern. In broad outline all these portentous events sound quite feasible and intriguing, but the
details quickly blur and dissolve in the light of the characters' persistent blundering and lack of forethought. And of real
originality there is little evidence. A pedestrian opening volume.

Michael Johnston. Tor, $27.99 (368p) ISBN 9780-7653-8648-9
The political is personal in this elaborate opening segment of a high fantasy series that entwines family quarrels with
imperial ambitions. An enormous empire controls its subject kingdoms through the ancient practice of hostage taking.
King Arko Hark-Wadi, spared being a hostage in his youth, is given back his son but must surrender himself to the
imperial court, a virtual death sentence. His daughters quarrel over a hastily arranged marriage to a usurper, uniting their
subject kingdoms but splitting their romantic hopes. Their mother, now the chief priestess of the imperial sun god,
schemes to become first minister for the unseen emperor and must play off the ambitious top general against her
estranged husband, all while trying to discover why the sacred grain crop is failing. Johnston (Golden) relies on history
and myth (a god named Mithra-Sol, an emperor named Tolemy, five sacred days at the end of the year) to ground his
work, but the uneasy mix of ancient practices of marriage and modern sensibilities toward love muddy the characters'
motivations and make reader loyalties uncertain. Agent: Richard Abate, 3 Arts Entertainment. (June)

Heart of Dread: Stolen. By Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston. Nov. 2014.304p. Putnam, $17.99
(9780399257551). Gr. 7-12.
Alternating chapters follow drakonrydder Nat and her boyfriend, Wes, in their respective parallel worlds: Blue, where
magic is real and the earths environment is stable and unpolluted, and the RSA (Remaining States of America), where
most of the earth has been swallowed by the oceans, and what's left battles a constant winter. De la Cruz and husband
Johnston combine dystopian futures with more standard fantasy conventions, all the while maintaining the giddy pace,
nonstop action, and comfortably predictable romance of their first title, Frozen (2013). Two interesting new characters
have been added: the enigmatic sylph Faiz, Nats teacher in all things magic, whose handsome presence makes Wes
jealous; and Wes' twin sister, Eliza, who emerges after years of internment in the hospital system reserved for "marked"
children with special powers. The concept of overlapping worlds on one planet will intrigue readers and raise
philosophical questions about the nature of reality. The cliff-hanger ending assures readers that a finale is in the works.--

In a frozen wasteland surrounded by polluted waters and punctuated by mountains of trash, humanity struggles to
survive a world of its own making. Rumor has it that there is a place called the Blue, a land uncorrupted, for which
many have searched and failed. When she comes into possession of a stone she thinks might be a map, Natasha "Nat"
Kestel hires Ryan "Wes" Wesson and his crew to get her to New Crete, the closest point to the Blue. But Nat is one of
the marked, people with special abilities and who bear an accompanying mark, something she must keep hidden from
the others.
de la Cruz and Johnston kick off a brilliant new series, blurring the lines of science fiction and fantasy to craft a bleak,
frozen dystopian world. This swift-moving, action-packed plot is a compelling read that readers will quickly devour, but
they will be left hungry for more. The characters are an interesting though rather predictable lot, with a semi-flat
supporting cast. Overall, it is very well written, although it does stumble a little at the end. This is an excellent kick-off
for the Heart of Dread series and one that will likely appeal to fans of Veronica Rossi's Under the Never Sky.--Susan

Frozen
Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston. Putnam, $17.99 (336p) ISBN 978-0-399-25754-4
In this post-apocalyptic first book in the Heart of Dread series, the husband-and-wife team of de la Cruz and Johnston
blur the lines between science fiction and fantasy. In a future in which much of the world is covered in ice--ice that has
brought with it strange and powerful creatures--it's business as usual in New Vegas for those with the funds and where
withal to gamble. When 16-year-old blackjack dealer Nat Kestal gains possession of a map supposedly leading to the
mythical, paradisiacal "Blue," she looks for a way out of the totalitarian Remaining States of America. She gains
passage with unpredictable Ryan "Wes" Wesson and his misfit band of mercenaries, only to develop feelings for him.
With government troops on their heels, slavers on the prowl, and potential traitors in their crew, can Nat and Wes trust
each other long enough to find the Blue, assuming it exists? Romance, magic, and excitement drive the pace of this
genre-defying adventure, though some of the more fantastical elements can clash with the futuristic, dystopian
atmosphere. Ages 12-up. Agent: Richard Abate, 3 Arts Entertainment, (Sept.)

De la Cruz (Blue Bloods, 2013) and her husband, Johnston, begin a new dystopian-future series that focuses on
environmental catastrophes--specifically, a new Ice Age. Their imaginative vision of the Remaining States of America
(RSA) includes polluted oceans that have swallowed entire coasts, ruthless mercenaries, rigid class systems, and magic.
It's a world where potable water is a rare commodity only the rich can afford, and the population is young simply
because no one lasts very long in such social and physical conditions. Nat is a 17-year-old blackjack dealer in New
Vegas, where casinos and corruption reign. She seeks a mythical land called the Blue, a paradise where the sun still
shines and magic is accepted, and she hires a dashing young mercenary, Ryan Wesson, to take her there. Ryan's ragtag
team guides Nat on a journey that is essentially one long chase scene filled with gangsters, unethical government
officials, and danger from every possible source. Predictable romance and writing will not deter de la Cruz's many fans
or those hungry for yet another postapocalyptic future. The abrupt ending suggests there's much more to come.--Debbie

Gr 9 Up--Natasha Kestral is a blackjack dealer in New Vegas. She is also one of the "Marked," a group of oft-feared
power wielders. They are sometimes telekinetic, self-healing, or telepathic, but always discernible by their brightly
colored eyes. With the United States almost destroyed and the world engulfed in a new ice age, most people have lost all
hope. Having escaped from the institution in which she was being held against her will, Nat has reinvented herself with
a new identity. But a voice in her head is forcing her to go to a rumored paradise called The Blue. To get there, she hires
Ryan Wesson and his band of ragtag underage pirates to book a passage over the frozen ocean. Upon meeting, Wes feels
an instant connection with Nat. As the two teens begin to trust each other, Nat begins to understand her true destiny. Can
she reach The Blue in time? While some plot elements are a little hard to swallow, such as Wes being a military veteran
at only 16 years old, there is a concentrated effort to build a glacially complex dystopian setting that is unrecognizable
from the world we know. The romance seems a little forced, but the well-developed supporting characters among the
crew help to provide a well-rounded ensemble. The plot flows steadily while providing glimpses into familiar sciencefiction
concepts that the story uses as its foundation. Fans of The Hunger Games will no doubt enjoy sinking their teeth
into this exciting book.--Ryan P. Donovan, New York Public Library

Gr 9 Up--In this follow-up to Frozen (Putnam, 2013), readers are reunited with Nat, who as reclaimed her flying drakon
and has left the love of her life, Wes, in order to defend her lost homeland, Vallonis. Nat finds growing support among
the populace and with ships filled with pilgrims seeking "The Blue," the mythical nickname for her lost kingdom. When
the Remaining States of America soldiers find a way to magically disable her drakon, she rejoins her mysterious
guardsman Faix in an attempt to learn more about her own power. Meanwhile, Wes has attempted to settle back into his
old life in New Vegas without Nat. Still looking for his lost sister Eliza, he suffers further setbacks when the slyph
(mage) Liannan and the two dwarfish smallmen on his team mysteriously disappear. Wes is ultimately recaptured and
redrafted into the army against his will. As his trajectory propels him closer to the ocean and to Nat, he struggles to find
his place in the growing war between the marked (humans with powers) and the wealthy elite. De la Cruz and Johnston
further the adventures of the frozen dystopian wasteland. The story slightly drags as Nat learns to harness her newfound
abilities, but the narrative is intercut with Wes's thrilling quest to save his sister, which picks up the slack. Readers who
haven't read the previous installment will be lost, but fans of the first book will no doubt be very happy with where this
action-filled trilogy is headed --Ryan P. Donovan, Southborough Public Library, MA
