SIDELIGHTS

Heather Van Fleet released her debut romance novel, Reckless Hearts, in 2017, and the book is marked as the first installment in a proposed series. As the author noted in an online Happily Ever After interview with Joyce Lamb, “I’ll never forget the day when my agent called me to tell me we had an official offer of publication on my series. It was through a FaceTime call via Facebook, and the second I heard her voice and saw her face, I burst into tears because I just knew. Then, seconds later, she was crying, too. It was a huge moment—one I will forever ingrain into my mind. That was the day I truly felt as though dreams were meant to come true.”

Reckless Hearts features former Marine Collin Montgomery, who leaves the Corps to raise his infant daughter, Chloe, after his girlfriend is killed in an accident. Collin mourns the loss of his girlfriend and struggles with single fatherhood, so his Marine Corps friends, Max and Gavin, move in to help him out. Collin also leans on his sister, Lia, for help, but when she gets a new job, she isn’t able to babysit anymore. Lia finds a suitable replacement in Addison, but it turns out that Addison and Colin have met before, and not under the best of circumstances. In fact, Collin and Addison clashed one night in a bar, and while they both dislike each other, Addison needs a job and Collin needs a nanny.

Kirkus Reviews contributor panned the novel, advising that “there’s way too much fighting, jealousy, and misunderstandings that could be easily untangled if the characters would simply talk to each other.” A Publishers Weekly correspondent was also reserved, finding that the “awkwardly presented back stories of family heartbreak fail to add character depth while damping the sexual tension.” Kaelan Rhywiol in the Kaelan Rhywiol Blog, however, announced: If you like an emotional rollercoaster of a read, this one will do that for you, I snickered, belly laughed, wanted to smack both Addison and Collin a time or three and still smiled when I finished the book.” A writer on the Red Hot Books Website was also impressed, noting that “Collin and his two buddies, Gavin and Max, worked well sparking off each other. The bromantic male bonding and how they handled the baby between them was the best part of this story. Their dialogue made me laugh out loud.”

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Heather! Please tell us a bit about your new release, Reckless Hearts.

Heather: Reckless Hearts is a Three Men and a Baby retelling, Heather-Style. It features three alpha Marines, one overwhelmed nanny and little Chloe Bean, the 6-month-old baby that steals the guys’ hearts. It’s basically a second-chance romance for Collin, Chloe’s dad, who is still getting over the death of his daughter’s mom.

Joyce: What do you do when you get stuck?

Heather: Usually when I get stuck, I tend to go on reading binges. I find that when I read the words of others, it motivates me to get words down on my PC. Sometimes I can go a good month without writing, but when the inspiration hits, I write like there’s no tomorrow.

Joyce: What distracts you the most when you’re trying to write?

Heather: My biggest distraction comes in the form of three little girls which (on their good days) I call my kids. My overly broody — but lovable — husband and is also quite distracting, too. I wouldn’t trade any of them for anything, but I do appreciate my quiet days when the hubby is at work and the kids are at school.

Joyce: Who are three romance authors who turn you into a fangirl?

Heather: This is an easy one. Sawyer Bennett, all the way, for my top spot. She’s one of the only authors out there that turns me into a blubbery, shaky, total hot mess. My close second and third are Jennifer Armentrout and Penelope Ward.

Joyce: Would you like to share a favorite moment from your writing career?

Heather: I’ll never forget the day when my agent called me to tell me we had an official offer of publication on my series. It was through a FaceTime call via Facebook, and the second I heard her voice and saw her face, I burst into tears because I just knew. Then, seconds later, she was crying, too. It was a huge moment — one I will forever ingrain into my mind. That was the day I truly felt as though dreams were meant to come true.

Joyce: Is there a TV show that you’ve recently binge-watched?

Heather: Yes! Fuller House, season two. My daughters and I spent an entire weekend bingeing on it, and though our Team Matt or Team Steve arguments escalated to eardrum-piercing levels that forced my hubby to the basement, it was completely awesome that the four of us could sit down and do something together for such a long period of time.

Joyce: What TV show or other activity interferes with your writing schedule?

Heather: I actually have two TV shows that interfere with my writing time. The first is Z Nation on Friday nights, and then The Walking Dead on Sunday nights. (My obsession with zombie shows knows no bounds.) No matter the deadline, I will never miss either of these shows.

Joyce: What are three romance novels on your to-be-read list?

Heather: This is a hard one because I am VERY far behind on my TBR right now. But these are three I’m dying to dig into sooner rather than later: The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, Semi-Scripted by Amanda Heger, Filthy English by Ilsa Madden-Mills.

Joyce: Do you have a pet that hangs out with you while you’re working?

    Stampy has a seat.
    Stampy has a seat.

Heather: Absolutely, I do. He’s my foot warmer on cold, snowy days and pretty much the best dog ever. His name is Stampy and he’s a Goldendoodle. (And yes, that’s my daughter he’s sitting on in the picture.)

    Joyce: What’s coming next?

Heather: Book two in the Reckless Hearts series (The Right Kind of Reckless), featuring Max and his love interest, releases in July. I’m super excited for the world to delve deeper into his crazy mind and am hoping I turned this playboy into a lover boy.

    Joyce: Thanks, Heather!

    About Reckless Hearts:

    Collin Montgomery

Between boot camp and two TOD’s in Iraq, my buddies Max, Gavin and me have been through some serious hell. So the last thing I ever expected was to find the biggest challenge of my life back home.

My girlfriend died. I couldn’t even attend her funeral, let alone tell her goodbye or that I’m sorry I wasn’t there like I should’ve been.

But she left me a gift. The best and scariest one I could’ve ever asked for. One I didn’t think I could handle…until the day I saw her tiny blues looking up at me in that airport. Chloe.

Now here I am, raising my baby girl—with the help of my two best friends. Things couldn’t be better. Until she walked into my life.

All I wanted was a nanny. Someone to take care of my girl when I couldn’t. What I didn’t count on was Addison, the brown-eyed temptress with a body of sin, and everything I didn’t need, but suddenly wanted.

Reckless Hearts series: Reckless Hearts (Book 1), The Right Kind of Reckless (Book 2), Recklessly Ever After (Book 3).

An ex-Marine raising his daughter with the help of his two best friends meets the perfect nanny for his daughter, but
when their mutual attraction creates tension in their business relationship, he's not sure how to handle it.Collin
Montgomery didn't expect to leave the Marine Corps to raise his infant daughter, Chloe, but after his girlfriend dies in
an accident, he's left with little choice and is grateful when his two Marine buddies Max and Gavin come with him to
help. Their odd work schedules make it hard to have someone on call all the time, especially after Collin's sister, Lia,
gets a new job that leaves her unable to fill the gaps. Lia introduces him to Addison, a currently unemployed preschool
teacher who'd make a perfect nanny. Unfortunately Addison and Collin have already met at a bar, a meeting that was
out of character for both of them and left them with really bad first impressions, so their ability to form a positive
working relationship is in question and is hindered further by a smoldering yet unwelcome attraction. But when her
desperation for a job matches his desperation for child care, they meet in the middle, learn to respect each other, and
then become a couple--but they are continually burdened by their insecurities and personal wounds. Debut author Van
Fleet starts with an interesting concept, "Three Marines and a Baby," and creates a set of characters who should be sexy
and just flawed enough to make readers root for them but instead makes them immature, annoying, and so incapable of
communicating in even the simplest ways that one wonders why they care about each other, much less why the reader
should care about them. There's way too much fighting, jealousy, and misunderstandings that could be easily untangled
if the characters would simply talk to each other; in other words, too much of the wrong kind of conflict to sustain a
novel. A disappointing effort.

Reckless Hearts
Heather Van Fleet. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 mass market paperback (384p)
ISBN 978-1-4926-3716-5
Even fans of the aggressive, impulsive energy of damaged alpha men, hate-to-love story arcs, and romances centered on
the exploits of postmilitary buddies may be turned off by the flip-flop of risk aversion and entitlement around women's
bodies in Van Fleet's (A Long Time Coming) series starter. Former Marine Collin Montgomery, struggling to raise his
late girlfriend's infant daughter despite the help of his two best friends (both ex-servicemen), is distressed to find that
the competent nanny his sister has recommended is Addison Booker, the hot woman who rejected his attentions at a bar.
Addison is equally unhappy to learn that her last-ditch job opportunity involves working for the sexy but boundaryignoring
Collin. The three ex-military buddies trade fun, natural banter, but their incompetence when confronted with
caring for a baby is unrealistic, and the parallels between Collin's protective possessiveness of his daughter and his
romantic interest in Addison are downright creepy. Awkwardly presented back stories of family heartbreak fail to add
character depth while damping the sexual tension. Agent: Stacey Donaghy, Donaghy Literary. (Feb.)

First, I have to say (both as a reader and cover artist) that I love the cover, it’s very eye catching and made me want to pick up the book.

Real characters, real conflict and a sweet, sexy romance sum up RECKLESS HEARTS

I don’t like pat characters, I swoon over the broken dudes and the messed up misses who still have the courage to keep trying and fight for what they need.

Heather Van Fleet nails those for me.

(and, hot ex-military, rugby playing, alpha guys? Yes please.)

If you like an emotional rollercoaster of a read, this one will do that for you, I snickered, belly laughed, wanted to smack both Addison and Collin a time or three and still smiled when I finished the book.

Also, can we say bromance? I’m a sucker for that too. The interactions between Collin and his buddies is perfectly written and made me incredibly happy as a reader.

Pacing is good with few slow spots, and the side characters are intriguing, I’m looking forward to the second book.

    SCORES:

Readability: 4/5 stars: This one was a bit slower for me, I didn’t need to keep reading yet still thought about the characters when I was away. I also remembered to drink my coffee.

Arcs: 5/5 stars: Well planned out romantic beats throughout with a satisfying conclusion and lead-ins to the next books.

Writing Craft: 5/5 stars: Few issues I noticed other than a couple of sentences that could have been written in a more active voice. I deeply enjoyed the expertly written dual point-of -view which I know from experience is hard to nail.

Would I buy it for a friend?

If they liked ex-military alpha guys and sassy heroines? Yep. No question.

Review: Reckless Hearts by Heather Van Fleet
    Reviewed by Joanna
Three men and a baby is the core of this story, and who doesn’t want to read hapless guys juggling a cute kid? Great premise. But the love was a little harder to come by in this tale of a teacher and an ex-marine.

Addison is our unemployed teacher. She needs a job, and it just so happens Collin needs a nanny for his baby daughter. They meet in a bar where he’s pushy in offering help to her and her very drunk buddy, but Addie’s not having any of it and leaves him in her dust. They meet again when his sister, Lia, her sort-of friend, brings her to interview for the nanny post. But again our H&H don’t hit it off.

Despite the mutual attraction, neither likes the other. In fact they’re quite rude every time they meet. Collin hasn’t has sex in eighteen months and blames that for his mood swings. Addie needs money as she’s being evicted but she doesn’t exactly make it easy on herself. She’s brittle, and not very chill, snapping her fingers in Collin’s face and barking at him.

Collin was a marine, and is now raising his motherless daughter, Chloe, with the help of two buddies who were squad mates. Even between them they can’t cover Chloe’s needs at all times, and help is required.

Addison ends up in his employ, of course, but it takes a winding path to get there, and the story didn’t always feel perfectly balanced. They took a long time to get to know one another, and though there was a sexy spark, it was more on Collin’s side. I wanted more talking and bonding with some happy ‘yes, I like you’ moments earlier on.

When there were opportunities to connect them more deeply, they sometimes sidestepped. For example: Addison is in an accident. Collin sees her car surrounded by flashing lights, pulls over and freaks out about a previous accident he’s been left damaged by. He doesn’t go with her to the hospital. She insists he doesn’t, but he really should’ve gone. Then he should’ve brought her flowers and food when she was home. Instead he turns up the next day to take her out for breakfast, which is great, except she doesn’t want to go and is trying to conceal her pajama-clad self from him.

He mooches in her room, looking at photos then asks a question about her family – but the short version of the story as he’s hungry. He doesn’t enquire about how she is, whether she’s in pain or if she slept okay. He’s not the most emotionally aware of men.

In fact the only time the accident was mentioned was at the cafe where he whined about her flirting with the EMT. Which he then sulked about. I get that he’s meant to be the brusque cave man type, but telling me he’s all horny for her and likes seeing her holding his daughter doesn’t make me love him when he treats her badly. I wanted to like him, but it was difficult in moments like this.

Similarly with Addison – she fancies Collin but shows the opposite in her behaviour, actively avoiding him and being snappy. I’d liked to have known more about her back story earlier, so I could understand her life and why she was reticent to build relationships. Once I knew what was going on, I felt empathy for her, but by that point I’d already been wondering if they were ever going to work as a couple.

Collin and his two buddies, Gavin and Max, worked well sparking off each other. The bromantic male bonding and how they handled the baby between them was the best part of this story. Their dialogue made me laugh out loud and I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen in Max’s story which looks like it’s up next. He’s hot, and always chasing (and catching) women, but it looks like his heart belongs to Lia.

I’ll read on in the series, as there were aspects of the writing I liked, though I’d really love to see more love and affection before the end game.
