SIDELIGHTS

In addition to her career as a teacher of special education, Mary Jennifer Payne also works as an author and graphic novelist. She has published several works under the Young Adult category.

Since You've Been Gone

One of her books, Since You’ve Been Gone, stars protagonist Edie Fraser, who is far from the average teenager. She has spent much of her life trying to escape from the clutches of her father, a policeman who has been terrorizing Edie’s mother and Edie for years. Their trek has led them to London, England. In making this move, Edie has had to abandon everything and everyone else she knows and loves. Soon Edie starts to see the move as a blessing, especially as she and her mother are able to live independently and seem to have finally found safety. However, Edie’s life takes another unexpected turn when her mother vanishes one evening. Edie takes it upon herself to track down her mother. Edie suspects that her mother’s disappearance is far from coincidental, and that she is the only one who can save her mother from danger. She enlists the help of a friend, a boy named Jermaine, and the two of them wind up touring England in their search. Along the way, Edie reaches a point of self-discovery that may change the course of her life even further.

Booklist reviewer Bethany Fort remarked: “This Canadian import makes for a quick, exciting read.” Resource Links contributor Angela Thompson wrote: “If you are looking for a book around the theme of abuse, this novel will certainly fill that gap.” Jennifer Furuyama, a reviewer in School Library Journal, stated that readers “will enjoy this fast-paced sojourn through London.”

Finding Jade

Finding Jade, the first in the “Daughters of Light” series, takes place in a somewhat distant future, where global warming has taken its toll on the world and left the world’s population to sort through the ruins. The novel tells the story of Jasmine Guzman, a young girl whose life has been fraught with trouble ever since the sudden abduction of her twin, Jade, half a decade ago. Jasmine was the sole witness to the incident, and bears emotional and psychological scars from it. Jade’s kidnapping has also deeply affected their mother. She is seriously ill with lupus, to the point that she may not survive. Jasmine has had to switch roles with her mother, taking care of the household. Her life is destined to change when she enrolls in Beaconsfield Collegiate, a school composed entirely of pairs of twin siblings. It is at the school that she learns she has a larger purpose in the world than she could have ever imagined. In this world, twins are destined to keep Earth safe from demonic entities; people placed in this role are known as “seers.” Jasmine is also meant to assume this responsibility, but also discovers that Jade has been taken captive by the very demons they were meant to fight together. It is up to Jasmine to find a way to pull Jade out of the “Place-in-Between” so they can be reunited. To do this, she must gain control of her abilities as a seer. However, her powers don’t guarantee her safety from the dangers of the Place-in-Between, especially as its residents have been hoping to lure her into their clutches.

Publishers Weekly contributor expressed that “there are many promising elements in Payne’s first entry in the “Daughters of Light” series.” Booklist reviewer Becca Worthington remarked: “This is an inventive read with thought-provoking themes.” In an issue of School Library Journal, Rachel Reinwald concluded: “Fans of apocalyptic novels may find this a fast, action-packed read.”

Jasmine Guzman expects her first day of ninth grade at a new school to be relatively uneventful, despite living with her
terminally ill mother and mourning the disappearance of her twin sister, Jade, years ago. Jasmine's assignment to
Beaconsfield Collegiate, which has an unusually high number of twin students, begins of a series of events that
challenges everything she knows. She, like many other twins, is actually a powerful Seer, responsible for protecting the
world from demons, and she must find Jade, who now lives in the demon-riddled Place-in-Between. Though Payne's
(Since You've Been Gone) story takes place sometime in the future after much of the world has been ruined by climate
change, leaving refugees to seek asylum, the setting is largely irrelevant. Most of the action occurs in the Place-inBetween,
a changing landscape that mirrors tragic events in human history. Competing mythologies, including
Armageddon, angels, demons, and African folklore create confusion, and although there are many promising elements
in Payne's first entry in the Daughters of Light series, they don't come together in a cohesive way. Ages 12-up. Agent:

Finding Jade. By Mary Jennifer Payne. Feb. 2017. 200p. Dundurn, paper, $12.99 (9781459735002). Gr. 7-10.
When they were 10 years old, Jasmine Guzman's twin sister, Jade, was abducted right in front of her. Jasmine has since
learned to live with the guilt and grief, struggling to help her ailing mother suffering from lupus. But when she gets
assigned to a bizarre new school where many students are twin girls, her past comes flooding back. It turns out that she
and Jade--who was abducted into another realm entirely--are Seers, teenagers with psychic and physical powers, from
mind reading to time travel. The final battle approaches, dark forces gain power, and Seers are the only hope to save
humankind. This first book in the Daughters of Light series combines dystopia (it's 2030, but already dark with climate
change and water shortage) and time-warping (the Toronto subway system transports them into a realm that morphs
from bomb-threatened WWII London to the time of the Black Plague). The rules of the Demon world can be hard to
follow, and some of the results feel anticlimactic, but overall this is an inventive read with thought-provoking themes. --

Dystopian literature fills a particular niche: near-future speculative fiction predicated on a negative outcome to current
issues. In Finding Jade, Payne has combined a dystopian setting with the fantasy elements
of angels and demons and supernatural powers. The novel is specifically set in the year 2030, and Canada is dealing
with the twin challenges of climate change and environmental refugees. Jasmine Guzman and her mother have been
grieving the mysterious loss of her twin sister Jade four years ago, and the stress has caused her mother's health to
decline dangerously. Jasmine has taken on many of the adult roles, with the help of her mother's friend Lola. Now
Jasmine is starting Grade nine, and is oddly redirected to an unfamiliar school. Once there, she sees a statistically
unbelievable percentage of twin girls. She also meets, and instantly crushes on Raphael. He is not just incredibly
handsome, but seems to know her thoughts and feelings. It turns out he lives in her building, and makes everyone he
contacts healthier and happier.
When Jasmine decides to skip school and take the subway downtown, an apparent transit accident transports her to the
London tube during an air raid in World War II. Raphael appears to explain: he is an angel, and she is a Seer, who has
been designated for special training to protect the world from demons who can enter the mortal realm from The-Placein-Between,
gaining strength from human fear and suffering. Jasmine then sees her sister Jade, and learns that she can
bring Jade back with the help of Raphael and her fellow Seers, the Daughters of Light. The twins should have been
safeguarded by their Protector, her mother's friend Lola. Now Mr. Khan, a teacher at her new school, will become their
Protector, as they and their classmates learn to use their powers to battle the demons.
This novel is intended as the introduction to a much bigger narrative arc as the Daughters of Light Series. Payne tries to
place a complex plot within a larger framework of unanswered questions. It a test of the reader's patience to work

Payne, Mary Jennifer FINDING JADE Dundurn (Children's Fiction) $12.99 2, 14 ISBN: 978-1-4597-3500-2
A Canadian teen discovers paranormal powers in the near future. Not even two decades from now, climate change has
damaged our world drastically and societies are struggling to deal with the repercussions of our abuse of the planet. On
top of all this, 14-year-old Latina Jasmine Guzman must deal with the trauma of losing her abducted twin sister as well
as her mother's lupus. After a series of bizarre events leave Jasmine questioning her sanity, she learns from Raphael, a
beautiful, brown-skinned boy at her new school, that she is a Seer and that she's in danger. Even more surprisingly, she
discovers that her sister is in fact alive and that, in order to get to her, Jasmine must go to the Place-in-Between, where
demons dwell and await her arrival for nefarious reasons. The plot suffers from uneven pacing, with drawn-out
moments that add little and gaps left from rushing through important parts of the story. Narrator Jasmine does a lot of
telling, not showing, so her character feels more like a set of assertions than a fully developed person; her regrettable
overuse of "crazy" is both tedious and off-putting. The obvious statement about the effects of climate change is
executed clumsily, and story is sacrificed in the process. With repetitive language, underdeveloped storyline, and
lackluster worldbuilding, this series opener leaves much to be desired. (Paranormal adventure. 12-16)

When Lizzie's father died four years ago, her mother lapsed into alcoholism and bad judgement. A string of bad
boyfriends has culminated in Dean, also unemployed and also alcoholic. But when he sexually assaults Lizzie, she
knows that she can no longer stay to protect her physically challenged younger brother, her aged family pet, or her
mother. Lizzie's grandmother takes her in, and helps her start at a new school. But when her brother calls to warn her
that Dean is threatening to put the dog down, Lizzie knows she has to step back in. She gets the dog to safety, but loses
her boyfriend due to all the family drama. It takes a chance encounter with a street walker to make her realize what she
needs: "You need someone in this world to love you like your nan does, but, more importantly, you need to love
yourself, Lizzie." (p. 140) When her brother calls in desperation, Lizzie knows what she must do.
Enough is in the gritty tradition of many of the Orca novels, and is similarly powerful. Lizzie is a real world example of
a teen tom apart by decisions she should not have to make at her age. We must admire her courage and resilience in the
face of these challenges.

Fifteen-year-old Edie Fraser has spent her whole life running away. After she and her mother, Sydney, move to London,
Sydney doesn't come home after work one night, and Edie is left alone. Edie and her new friend Jermaine begin to
search for Sydney, but they soon realize that England wasn't far enough for Mrs. Fraser to escape her past. The novel
starts with a great first line--"Today I punched Ranice James in the face"--which sets the tone for this fast-paced
mystery, and the tension only increases as they find clues. But this is also a good character study of both Edie, who,
despite her desire to stay safe and avoid danger, now must face her fears in order to find her missing mother, and
Jermaine, who struggles to find his place in life. This Canadian import makes for a quick, exciting read. --Bethany Fort

Edie and her mother are on the run. Her father, a police psychologist who seems to everyone else to be a model husband
and father, is violently abusive --perhaps murderously so. No matter where they run, he unfailingly tracks them down. A
rapid-fire relocation to England is Edie's mother's latest attempt to evade his wrath and manipulation. Edie is nervous
about a new country and a new school, but she takes comfort in their small apartment and the knowledge that her
mother has a job that will cover their expenses. No sooner is this thought out of Edie's head, then the train comes off the
track. Edie's mother doesn't return from her first shift at her new job. Edie knows in her gut that her father has
something to do with it and also knows that it is up to her to find her mother in this completely new and foreign place.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Payne's story is pretty standard, predictable fare. A teenager has to resolve an adult problem and becomes more capable
or adult him/ herself in so doing. It is also not surprising that the story ends as it does with the "accidental" death of
Edie's mother and it is also convenient that Edie has an aunt who lives in Ireland who assumes responsibility for her
care. If you are looking for a book around the theme of abuse, this novel will certainly fill that gap. but there isn't
anything ground-breaking or unusually brilliant about this title or Payne's treatment of the theme.

Gr 9 Up--In this first book in a new Canadian fantasy series, 14-year-old Jasmine's twin sister was abducted five years
earlier, and her mother has been sick ever since. Things get even stranger when Jasmine is forced to go to a new high
school for her own protection. Jasmine learns that she is a Seer, a person with special powers to see demons, and it is up
to her and the other Seers to save the world from both evil demons and climate change. Raphael, a boy from school,
guides her through the parallel in-between world where the demons are starting to enter, and she sees that her sister is
not really gone; she is stuck in this same realm, and Jasmine and her new friends are tasked with breaching the divide to
rescue her sister. This plot-driven story relies heavily on dialogue to develop the setting. As a result, the world-building
sometimes feels insufficient and the characters (and their relationships) two-dimensional. The lack of detail also leaves
a lot of unanswered questions: Why do the Seers exist? How is Jasmine's mother's illness connected to Jasmine's
abilities? The sequels will hopefully fill in plot points. VERDICT This lacks a well-built world and complex characters,
but fans of apocalyptic novels may find this a fast, action-packed read.--Rachel Reinwald, Lake Villa District Library,

Gr 8 Up--Fifteen-year-old Edie is no stranger to starting over. She and her mother have been evading her abusive father
for longer than she cares to remember. This time however, things are different. Edie doesn't just have to move to a new
town and make new friends. She is forced to relocate to London, leaving her beloved cat behind at a moment's notice.
As if adjusting to a new country weren't enough of a challenge, Edie finds herself at the center of a missing person case
when her mother does not return home from her new job. With the help of unlikely ally and romantic prospect Jermaine,
Edie's search for her mother takes her all over the city. It is on this journey that she realizes it's time to stop running and
