WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Lucy Banks grew up in Hertfordshire, England, and began writing at the age 0f ten. She is a former English teacher who established her own copywriting company. Banks never lost her desire to write fiction and penned several novels before she found a publisher for her debut, titled The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost, the first book in “Dr. Ribero’s Agency of the Supernatural” series. A Publishers Weekly contributor called the debut novel “something like Ghostbusters with a British accent.”
Commenting on her inspiration for the novel and the series, Banks noted in an interview for the Qwillery Web site that she “grew up in a fairly strange house (plenty of people liked to say it was haunted)—so I wanted to write a book that normalised the supernatural—because that’s what was normal for me. The character of Dr. Ribero was actually conceived in a writing class in Exeter, though originally, he was investigating rhubarb theft, not dangerous spirits.”
The novel begins with Kester Lanner’s dying mother telling her son to contact Dr. Ribero, who runs a paranormal investigative agency. However, when Kester follows up on his mother’s final request, he is astounded to learn that Dr. Ribero is actually his father. A nervous young man, Kester is more than a little afraid when he learns what his father does for a living, which is basically trapping and removing ghosts.
The agency, however, is not that successful and has no state-of-the-art equipment. Rather, it uses water bottles to capture spirits. Kester is not all that keen on joining in on his father’s work when his father lets it be known he would like his son to work with him. However, it turns out that Kester has a secret talent that would be a boon to the agency. It seems that Kester is able to access portals into the spirit world. Kester is reluctant but agrees to go on a case in which a ghost has inhabited her portrait, that of a woman dressed in green who seems to charm all the men who gaze upon the painting.
The goal is to somehow draw the ghost out of the portrait and then capture her so she can be removed from the house. However, as Kester delves deeper into the issue, he learns things that put his father’s agency in jeopardy. “This is a cozy haunting story, instead of a poltergeist-filled destination tale,” wrote Emily Whitmore in Booklist. A Publishers Weekly contributor remarked: “Contemporary fantasy fans hungry for a new angle will enjoy this one.”

about lucy
I first started writing when I was 10. Needless to say, it wasn't very good. It was very whiny, very self-obsessed and used horrendous spelling.
Thankfully, as I grew up, I whined less. This improved the quality of my writing. By 23, I’d written my first full-length book, and thought it was amazing. Sadly, it wasn’t. I realised that I’d need to keep trying, if I was going to master this writing lark. So I wrote another full-length book. Then another.
Six attempts later, I’d finally produced something I was (dare I say) pleased with. I sent it out, and Amberjack Publishing saw something in it. Hooray! I’m happy to say that Dr Ribero’s Agency of the Supernatural – The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost, will be arriving online and in paperback at the start of 2017.

Lucy Banks is the author of The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost, described by Publisher's Weekly as 'Ghostbusters with a British accent'. It's the first in the series, exploring the strange, sinister (and often slightly silly) world of Dr Ribero's Agency of the Supernatural.
In 2016, Lucy also won Amazon’s A New Night Before Christmas writing competition with her entry about a slug living under a family’s floorboards, who assumes Christmas is not for him, until he comes face to face with Father Christmas.
As you might guess (being all too familiar with slugs and ghosts), Lucy hails from South-West England - an area rife with spectral tales and plenty of bugs. She lives in Devon with her husband and two children, and in addition to writing, is an avid reader - less of a bookworm, and more of a book-python!

Interview with Lucy Banks, Author of The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost
TQ: Welcome to The Qwillery. When and why did you start writing?
Lucy: Thanks for having me here! I think I was always a bit of a compulsive writer – I’ve got diaries going back to when I was nine years old. Over time, that progressed into writing novels, though the first ones weren’t very good. The other day, I found one I’d written when I was 20, and it really made me wince. But, we’ve all got to start somewhere, haven’t we? And thankfully, things have improved a lot since then!
TQ: Are you a plotter, a pantser or a hybrid?
Lucy: I like to imagine I’m a plotter, though I think it depends on the story. Sometimes, if the characters are strong, it’s easier to let them take over and tell the stories themselves. I’m not sure I could ride entirely by the seat of my pants, I think I’d be too worried that I wouldn’t be able to think up a satisfactory ending – but I have a lot of respect for those that can.
TQ: What is the most challenging thing for you about writing?
Lucy: Finding the time, definitely. I’m a new author, so I still have a day job, and I’m a mother of two young, boisterous boys. It’s hard not to feel guilty writing when you have a chorus of little voices asking why you’re not playing with them!
TQ: What has influenced / influences your writing?
Lucy: First and foremost, other great writers. I read novels by Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, Stephen King, JK Rowling, and I’m just blown away by their ability to create these immersive, believable, captivating worlds. From an early age, I used to read and think ‘one day, I want to be able to do that’. Other than that – great teachers at school, creative friends… I’m lucky, I’m surrounded by amazing, talented people, who are a constant inspiration.
TQ: Describe The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost in 140 characters or less.
Lucy: Kester heads to Exeter to find Dr Ribero, but finds his father and a supernatural agency instead, plus a murderous, malevolent spirit. Eep!
TQ: Tell us something about The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost that is not found in the book description.
Lucy: Dr Ribero’s supernatural agency are inept and rather short on cash, so use water bottles to trap spirits (they simply can’t afford state-of-the-art equipment). It’s not too much of an issue, unless they accidentally throw the bottles out for recycling!
TQ: What inspired you to write The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost?
Lucy: A few things, really. I grew up in a fairly strange house (plenty of people liked to say it was haunted) – so I wanted to write a book that normalised the supernatural – because that’s what was normal for me. The character of Dr Ribero was actually conceived in a writing class in Exeter, though originally, he was investigating rhubarb theft, not dangerous spirits.
TQ: What sort of research did you do for The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost?
Lucy: My office is overflowing with books on the occult – my friends come over and probably imagine I’m a complete weirdo! However, it’s great fun diving into them and finding out about obscure spirits. Exeter Library is also a popular haunt of mine, particularly for books about the local area. All the Dr Ribero books are set around South-West England, so it’s a great place to find out information. And of course, Google is always incredibly handy.
TQ: Please tell us about The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost's cover.
Lucy: The house on the front cover refers to a key location in the book… the place where the green-dressed ghost is misbehaving, and where Dr Ribero and his crew spend plenty of time trying to get her out. My publishers were looking for something that also highlighted the gothic / Sherlock Holmes edge to the story – although it’s a light-hearted book, there’s a strong element of mystery and a few spooky parts. However, whilst it does give a nod to the great Sherlock Holmes, it’s fair to say it’s probably a little bit ‘Scooby Doo’ and ‘Ghostbusters’ in places too!
TQ: In The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost who was the easiest character to write and why? The hardest and why?
Lucy: For me, writing the characters was definitely the most fun part. The main character (Kester Lanner) was particularly easy – because he’s essentially a male version of myself in my early twenties! Slightly socially inept, a bit bumbling, likes a good mystery… and is obsessed with books. The characters of the spirits were obviously a bit more challenging, particularly as I wanted to break the whole wailing, moaning, transparent, floating ghost stereotype. That took a bit more plotting, though hopefully I got there in the end.
TQ: Which question about The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost do you wish someone would ask? Ask it and answer it!
Lucy: Why do they drink so much tea? Answer – everyone I know drinks tea. It’s immersed in our culture – all events are invariably begun with the golden question, ‘do you want a cup of tea?’ Ironically, I don’t drink it myself, but I’m partial to a herbal tea or two, especially if it comes with an accompanying biscuit.
TQ: Give us one or two of your favorite non-spoilery quotes from The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost.
Lucy:
“I do hope,” Dr Ribero interrupted, his eyebrows bouncing up and down in a vaguely threatening manner, “that my only son in the world is not a coward. Kester, are you a coward?”
“Yes! Yes, I very much am!”
TQ: What's next?
Lucy: The second book in the series is due for publication early 2018, and I’m currently polishing the third /writing the fourth as we speak.
TQ: Thank you for joining us at The Qwillery.
Lucy: Thank you, I’ve enjoyed answering your questions!
The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost
Dr Ribero's Agency of the Supernatural 1
Amberjack Publishing, March 7, 2017
Kester Lanner didn’t know what to expect when he followed his mother’s dying request to contact the mysterious Dr. Ribero, but he wasn’t expecting to find his long lost father. Nor was he expecting to join the family business: catching supernatural spirits.
Kester is intrigued despite his fear, and finds himself drawn into an ancient ghost story that will test the entire agency. He soon becomes enmeshed in a struggle with the spirit, who is so malevolent and haunting that his first real case might just be his last.
About Lucy
(from the Publisher's website)
Lucy Banks grew up in provincial Hertfordshire, before fleeing to the wilds of Devon, where she now lives with her husband and two boys. As a child, she spent a disproportionate amount of time lurking in libraries, and prowling car-boot sales to feed both her hunger for books and her book collection. It’s fair to say that she’s bypassed being a bookworm, and become a book-python instead. Today, most of the available space in her house is stuffed to the brim with literature, which is just the way she likes it.
After teaching English Literature to teens, Lucy set up her own copywriting company and turned her love for the written word into a full-time career. However, the desire to create never went away, so Lucy turned her insomnia into a useful tool—penning her novels in the wee small hours of the night and the stolen moments of the day.
Lucy has enjoyed inhabiting worlds of her own creation from a young age. While her initial creations were somewhat dubious, thankfully, her writing grew as she did, becoming more coherent, as well as riveting. Writing has been a lifelong exercise for Lucy, and she loves the process from the beginning inklings of an idea to the care spent editing to craft interesting tales. She takes particular delight in creating worlds that closely overlap reality with key intriguing differences. The odd, the jarring, and the curious are all themes that often feature prominently in her stories.
The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost is Lucy’s first published novel, and the first in a series titled Dr Ribero’s Agency of the Supernatural. The series unites the realm of the strange with the everyday world. It’s a place where chaotic spirits rub shoulders with businessmen, and nothing is quite as it seems.

The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost.
By Lucy Banks.
Mar. 2017. 266p. Amberjack, paper, $14.99 (9781944995041); ebook (9781944995126).
Ghosts and ghost hunters are a well-kept secret in the England presented in Banks' first novel, the start to the Dr.
Riberos Agency of the Supernatural series. Kester Lanner, our protagonist, discovers the Agency after his mother sends
him to find Dr. Ribero. Lanner is quickly found out to have a special and rare gift: he can open doors into the spirit
world. When the agency lands a dangerous and important mission, they insist on taking Lanner along to help. The case
proves tricky as the ghost has ingrained herself into her portrait, and to remove her from the house, they must pull her
out and put her in the storage container. The team interacts with a few spirits in the book, but none of the missions are
scary. The story lacks the atmosphere of a truly terrifying haunting, but the mystery itself and the members of the
agency are fun and compelling. This is a cozy haunting story, instead of a poltergeist-filled destination tale.--Emily
Whitmore

The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost
Lucy Banks. Amberjack, $14.99 trade paper
(266p) ISBN 978-1-944995-04-1
Banks's debut marks the start of a promising urban fantasy series, something like Ghostbusters with a British accent.
Kester Lanner was raised by his mother and only discovers after her death that his father is alive and eager to welcome
him into the family business in Exeter: Dr. Ribero's Agency of the Supernatural. A job as a spirit-hunting investigator
doesn't exactly thrill this nervous academic, who prefers "the predictable, the reliable, and the well-established."
Despite his misgivings, 22-year-old Kester joins the firm and soon discovers that he has a rare skill that could help give
the company the edge it needs over the competition. The real challenge comes with a dangerous case dealing with a
haunted painting of a mysterious lady in green that charms every man who sees it. Banks introduces all the necessary
background of a series launch, including Kester's uneasy relationships with his new job, the father he never knew he
had, and coworkers who aren't sure how much they can trust him, as well as a supernatural landscape that mixes
folklore, legend, and deadly reality. Contemporary fantasy fans hungry for a new angle will enjoy this one. (Mar.)

THE CASE OF THE GREEN-DRESSED GHOST
Author(s): Lucy Banks
This debut is a masterful marriage of the paranormal with the everyday world as it introduces Dr. Ribero's Agency of the Supernatural and an unlikely, initially unremarkable hero. With a unique, charmingly English story, a hilariously cantankerous cast of characters, and plenty of unexpected twists, Banks delivers a captivating read destined to be a favorite with paranormal fans -- and mystery lovers will find much to enjoy as well. Readers will be clamoring for the second installment of this fantastic new series.
With her dying breath, Kester Lanner's mother insists her 22-year-old son contact the mysterious Dr. Ribero at his paranormal investigative agency. Shy and nervous by nature, Kester is shocked to discover that Dr. Ribero is his long-lost father, and more than a little terrified at the nature of the agency's work of trapping ghosts and spirits. Kester grudgingly participates in the agency's cases, discovering he has a special talent that could help the agency withstand its competition. His first major case involves a haunted portrait of a woman in green, and as Kester digs into the mystery, he unveils secrets that threaten the agency's survival. (LUCY BANKS, Mar., 284 pp., $14.99)

THE CASE OF THE GREEN-DRESSED GHOST Author(s): Lucy Banks This debut is a masterful marriage of the paranormal with the everyday world as it introduces Dr.
