WRITINGS
SIDELIGHTS
Kim Redford grew up on a Texas ranch, and this serves as the basis for her “Smokin’ Hot Cowboys” contemporary romance series. Discussing her writing process in a USA Today Online interview, Redford told Joyce Lamb: “I’m definitely a combination of plotter and pantser. I usually start a book as a plotter by writing a short synopsis that gives me the basic idea of where I want to go with the theme, the story and the characters. As I write, my pantser self comes out to play, giving my characters room to grow so that they fully express their needs and desires.”
Redford’s series combines cowboys with firefighters, beginning with the 2015 novel A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas. The second and third installments, Blazing Hot Cowboy and A Very Cowboy Christmas, both followed in 2017. As Redford told Lamb, her inspiration comes from the people and nature around her. “I enjoy chatting with folks from all walks of life,” she stated, “learning their stories, their hopes and dreams, their dedication to families, towns and jobs. I’m appreciative of first responders, such as our volunteer firefighters and EMTs who put their lives on the line and on hold to answer urgent calls for help. I’m also inspired by the cowboys and cowgirls who keep alive a long tradition of strength and resilience — as well as a deep love for animals.”
A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas
A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas follows cowboy rancher and firefighter Trey Duval. Trey lives in Wildcat Bluff, Texas, and when he’s not working on his ranch, he’s working to protect his hometown from wildfires. When Trey and the rest of the inhabitants of Wildcat Bluff are faced with a serial arsonist, Misty Reynolds is sent to investigate. Misty goes undercover to smoke out the culprit, but Misty is deeply afraid of fire. She is not afraid of Trey, however, and the sparks between them are immediate and undeniable. Christmas approaches, and the entire town is on edge. Will Misty and Trey fight the flames that threaten to engulf them?
Praising the story in Publishers Weekly, a critic announced the “the attraction between Trey and Misty is instant, scorching, and flavored with just a hint of sweet innocence.” Cristina Merrill, writing in the online RT Book Reviews, was also impressed, and she called A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas “a fun, sexy read, one that is perfect for the upcoming holiday season.” Offering further applause in the online Fresh Fiction, Kay Quintin announced: “This very hot and passionate love story has everything: excitement, hot sex and suspense . . . I found myself riveted to each page, waiting for the next “outbreak of fire” to hit the county. This is a very entertaining and emotional tale that is sure to delight the reader.”
Blazing Hot Cowboy
Blazing Hot Cowboy follows Lauren and her daughter, Hannah. Single-mom Lauren heads to her childhood home to care for her sick aunt, bringing Hannah with her. When she arrives, Lauren runs into Kent, her high-school sweetheart. The attraction is still there, but Lauren isn’t looking for romance, and she goes out of her way to avoid him. Kent, however, is more interested in a relationship, and given the small-town setting, he and Lauren keep running into each other.
A Publishers Weekly critic applauded the novel, advising that “readers will long for sizzle, but all that’s here is damply smoldering.” Fresh Fiction correspondent Lee Erin Berryhill was equally laudatory, announcing that “Blazing Hot Cowboy takes place in a well-described country town, and readers will be able to imagine themselves in Kent’s farmhouse or on Lover’s Leap right along with the characters.”

Joyce: Welcome to HEA, Kim! Please tell us a bit about your new release, Blazing Hot Cowboy.
Kim: Blazing Hot Cowboy is second in my Smokin’ Hot Cowboys series about cowboy firefighters in Wildcat Bluff County, Texas. Horse-assisted therapy is an important theme in this book because I want to share with readers the amazing health benefits of hippotherapy.
Lauren Sheridan’s return to Wildcat Bluff after the death of her husband is bittersweet. Thirteen years have passed since she set foot in the place that’s always held her heart, and the sizzling memories of her high school sweetheart. She’s a physical therapist now, and she’s looking for a place to put down roots.
Kent Duval is a rancher and volunteer firefighter in the small town of Wildcat Bluff. He’s missing only one thing in life: passion. He last saw Lauren when she was sweet 16 and they were head over heels in love. Now that she’s back with her spunky daughter in tow, the heat between them builds again. And he can’t help but hope they might get a second chance at love.
Joyce: What inspires your book ideas?
Kim: I enjoy chatting with folks from all walks of life, learning their stories, their hopes and dreams, their dedication to families, towns and jobs. I’m appreciative of first responders, such as our volunteer firefighters and EMTs who put their lives on the line and on hold to answer urgent calls for help. I’m also inspired by the cowboys and cowgirls who keep alive a long tradition of strength and resilience — as well as a deep love for animals.
Joyce: Is there anything interesting that’s happened to you while doing research for a book?
Kim: “It’s life imitating art!” my Sourcebooks editor said on the phone as I described the arrival of volunteer firefighters to tackle a grassfire across the road from my home in the mountains. She was exactly right. A Cowboy Firefighter for Christmas, first in my Smokin’ Hot Cowboys series, begins with an out-of-control wildfire. That day I smelled smoke and glanced out my front door to see a wide-spread, wind-whipped blaze headed straight for my house across a pasture. I quickly called my local fire-rescue department for help. I can’t tell you how glad I was to see those volunteer cowboy firefighters arrive in their booster and set to work. They saved animals and my house that day. I’ll always be grateful, so I particularly like to give first responders credit for their expertise and bravery in my cowboy firefighter books.
Joyce: Do you write by the seat of our pants (pantser), or do you carefully plot your stories (plotter)?
Kim: I’m definitely a combination of plotter and pantser. I usually start a book as a plotter by writing a short synopsis that gives me the basic idea of where I want to go with the theme, the story and the characters. As I write, my pantser self comes out to play, giving my characters room to grow so that they fully express their needs and desires. In this way my original plot changes and adapts to the emerging storyline.
Joyce: Do you have a pet that hangs out with you while you’re working?
Temple, a rescue cat ... or perhaps a rescuing cat.
Temple, a rescue cat … or perhaps a rescuing cat.
Kim: Temple is a wonderful rescue cat. One evening, I happened to be looking out my front door as a furious rainstorm inundated my neighborhood, turning my street into a wild raging river. I saw a white cat that I’d never glimpsed before struggling to stay afloat in the swift current. Worried for his safety, I hurried outside, but he was swept into a storm drain and disappeared from sight. I was concerned for him, but there was nothing I could do to help. And yet, I had hope, so I went outside early the next morning, wishing that he might somehow have survived the storm. I heard a meow and turned to see him walking toward me, all dry and clean as if he’d never had a bit of trouble. Maybe he thought I needed rescue, because he adopted me on the spot and has been helping with my writing since that time.
Joyce: What’s your ideal scenery while you’re writing?
Kim Redford enjoys watching the horses as part of her writing scenery.
Kim Redford enjoys watching the horses as part of her writing scenery.
Kim: The Kiamichi Mountains in Southeast Oklahoma. I love to watch the hills change color from orange to crimson to magenta as dawn slowly gives way to dusk, or catch a summer storm that plays peek-a-boo across the towering trees with silver clouds and curtains of rain. Closer to my windows, I enjoy watching horses graze and frolic in their pasture. Summer or winter, spring or fall, I’m always inspired by this beautiful scenery.
Joyce: What is coming next from you?
Kim: A Very Cowboy Christmas is the third book in my Smokin’ Hot Cowboys series. It’ll be released in October. I had fun writing this story since I explore a vintage Christmas theme that resurrects warm memories of small towns, close-knit families and holiday cheer.
Sydney Steele’s 1959 Cadillac with tinsel-decorated long-horns on the chrome grille breaks down on Wildcat Road, setting her behind schedule. She is determined to make this a Christmas to remember for Wildcat Bluff County. As a cowgirl, single mom and volunteer firefighter, she’s carving out time to get Christmas at the Sure-Shot Drive-In holiday celebration and the Wildcat Bluff Fire-Rescue benefit calendar off the ground. But she’s running out of time and needs help to complete everything by Christmas.
Dune Barrett works as a cowboy, as well as a volunteer firefighter, on Cougar Ranch while he recovers from fighting an oil refinery fire. He’d be content to spend the holidays alone, except for the cowgirl he can’t get off his mind: Sydney Steele. When he sees her on the side of Wildcat Road, he’s eager to stop and assist her.
Sydney isn’t happy to see Dune because he’s been birddogging her for months. Yes, he ups her heat, but no, she’s not ready for love again. Still, she needs him now. By the time he gets her Caddy up and running, he’s volunteered to help, agreed to appear in the firefighter calendar as Mr. December and given her a kiss that definitely makes this a Christmas for her to remember.
About Blazing Hot Cowboy:
He’s all the heat she’ll ever need.
Lauren Sheridan’s return to Wildcat Bluff after the death of her husband is bittersweet. Thirteen years have passed since she set foot in the place that’s always held her heart…and the sizzling memories of her high school sweetheart.
Kent Duval has it all. A proud rancher and volunteer firefighter in the small town of Wildcat Bluff, he’s missing only one thing from his life: passion. Kent last saw Lauren Sheridan when she was sweet sixteen and they were head-over-heels in love. Now she’s back, spunky daughter in tow, and he no longer knows which way is up. As the heat between them builds, Kent can’t help but wonder if past flames can be rekindled and second chances really do exist.

Hi Kim and welcome to HJ! We’re so excited to chat with you about your new release, Blazing Hot Cowboy!
Please share your favorite scene from Blazing Hot Cowboy:
My favorite scene from Blazing Hot Cowboy is when Kent Duval and Lauren Sheridan return to their favorite high school hangout under an ancient oak tree on a bluff overlooking the Red River.
After thirteen years apart, they renew their vows of love in this very special place. Here is a short excerpt from that pivotal scene.
On a full moon night at Lovers Leap in Wildcat Bluff County, Texas . . .
Kent Duval gazed out over the Red River Valley, realizing how much he’d changed since Lauren Sheridan came back to town. He tugged her closer, not wanting to ever be separated from her again now that they stood—after all these years—in the very spot where she’d declared her love for him when she was only sweet sixteen.
“Wildcat Bluff is the very best place on Earth,” Lauren said, sounding wistful and hopeful at the same time.
“Now I agree, but not a few days ago.”
“What do you mean?” She lifted her head from his chest to look at him with eyes turned mysterious dark pools of silvery moonlight.
He tucked a soft strand of hair behind her ear, taking a deep breath as he considered his next words. “I guess I was pretty dense for a long time or maybe just too young.”
“You’re confusing me.”
“Once you left, Wildcat Bluff was never the same. I kept twisting and turning to make it right, but it just wasn’t.”
“But—”
“Wait. What I’m trying to say is that I realize now that you’re home with Hannah that this is the very best place on Earth.”
“Oh, Kent, that’s so sweet.” She pressed a hot kiss to his mouth before nibbling across his lower lip.
“It’s true.” He groaned as he felt a rush of heat spiral outward in a blaze of desire. “One thing for sure, I’m not feeling one damn bit sweet.”
“Good. I’m not either. Or hungry.”
“I’m hungry all right, but not for barbeque.” He licked across her lips, tasting her tangerine lip gloss that made him want her even more.
“Oh Kent, I just wish, I wish—” She clasped his shoulders and tugged him closer, as if she would never let him go.
“I know. I wish this was our first time. It could’ve been. It should’ve been.”
“But we were waiting for—”
“We waited too damn long.” He pressed hot, hard kisses across her jaw to her ear where he traced the intricate scrolls with the tip of his tongue.
“But how could we have known Daddy would get that great job and I’d be gone in a week?”
“Just another year. That’s all it would’ve taken. You’d have been out of high school and we would’ve gotten married right here in Wildcat Bluff.”
“I know. And then—”
“I should’ve come after you.”
“No. It wouldn’t have worked, not after I’d been in Connecticut a year and we’d both moved on with our lives.”
“I figured you’d taken to city life and wouldn’t want a country guy anymore.”
“Silly.” She lightly bit the tip of his nose in a rebuking tease. “You’re twice the man of any guy I ever met.”
“And you’re the love of my life.”
“Oh, Kent, really?”
“Can you doubt it?”
“I love you so much. I’ve always loved you.” She held his face with both hands and looked deeply into his eyes, blinking back tears of happiness. “Forget the past. Let’s make this our very first time.”
He crushed her to him, feeling his heart thud hard at her words. He’d never thought to have her love again. Now that they’d given each other their hearts once more, he’d do everything within his power to make her happy. He couldn’t go back in time, but he could make the intervening years a distant memory that no longer mattered to either of them.

Blazing Hot Cowboy
Kim Redford. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $7.99 trade paper (384p) ISBN 978-1-49262150-8
Redford tries hard to create romantic tension in this contemporary rural Texas romance, but Lauren
Sheridan, a recent widow returning to her small-town roots, and Kent Duval, a successful rancher and
volunteer fireman with a Ph.D. (and painted-on, stereotypical Comanche heritage), are stereotypical stuff of
"hot, sweaty dreams" that here never quite become convincing reality. Wildcat Bluff, Tex., is a sanitized
version of a prairie cowtown that's never seen a drought or a drop in cattle prices, and the many secondary
figures who surround Lauren and Kent in their mating dance are likewise familiar. When they reunite years
after their adolescent romance, sparks predictably flare up, fueled by memories of wild teenage kisses in the
bed of Kent's pickup. But Redford doesn't seem able to conjure up convincing obstacles to reigniting that
fire, instead relying on gushy sentimentality, as when Lauren's four-year-old daughter, Hannah, meets Kent
and shrieks, "Cowboy Daddy!" Readers will long for sizzle, but all that's here is damply smoldering
kindling. Agent: Elaine P. English. (Jan.)

A COWBOY FIREFIGHTER FOR CHRISTMAS
Author(s): Kim Redford
Redford’s novel is a fun, sexy read, one that is perfect for the upcoming holiday season. The hero’s affections for the leading lady can be a little over the top, and some of the supporting characters border on caricature. Still, this story would make a fun stocking stuffer for one’s fellow romance readers.
Misty Reynolds has come to Wildcat Bluff to investigate some mysterious fires. Upon her arrival, she runs into Trey Duvall, a volunteer firefighter who enlists her help to stop a fire. Trey is instantly smitten with the mysterious newcomer, but Misty, who is pretending to be on vacation, is a little more reserved. She needs to figure out who is behind these dangerous fires, and she sure hopes it isn’t Trey. Together, they look into the problem and deal with their growing attraction for each other. Misty Reynolds arrives from Dallas to the close-knit community of Wildcat Bluff as an independent troubleshooter to find out who was burning down Texas Timber's Christmas tree farms. Arriving at Christmastime is unusually hard on Misty as at twelve she lost both parents in a tragic fire on Christmas morning and this town is all out for Christmas. Brought up by her Aunt Cami, they both avoided any future Christmas holidays.
The last thing she expected was to be stopped on the two-lane highway by a buff, bronzed and sweaty body waving a bright red shirt over his head. Even with her fear of fires, Misty was coerced into helping hunky Trey Duval stop the fire with towels from her SUV. Wildcat Bluff County Fire-Rescue Volunteer and owner of Wildcat Ranch now labels Misty the town's Christmas Angel. Unknown that Misty was there for anything other than a vacation, they each begin to suspect the other of being involved in the deliberate fires covering the county. Trey hasn't met that special woman, but the green-eyed woman with a knockout body really gets under his skin. Revealing her true reason for being there, they work together to solve the crime while giving in to that sweet, sizzling sex. Both feel this could be the real deal but could never work as they come from completely different lifestyles with different dreams.
A COWBOY FIREFIGHTER FOR CHRISTMAS is the first book in the Smokin' Hot Cowboys series by the talented storyteller, Kim Redford. This very hot and passionate love story has everything: excitement, hot sex and suspense involving a sassy and sexy woman and a proud half-Cherokee rancher. It doesn't take these two long to figure out "this time is different" for both of them. I found myself riveted to each page, waiting for the next "outbreak of fire" to hit the county. This is a very entertaining and emotional tale that is sure to delight the reader.

Romance Western
After thirteen years Lauren Sheridan has returned to her hometown of Wildcat Bluff a widowed mother. Wanting stability, and the same country lifestyle she grew up with for her daughter, Lauren is excited about her return. What she didn't except was the return of her feelings for her high school sweetheart, Kent Duval, and how easy it is to fall back into a relationship with the handsome cowboy and firefighter. But when someone starts setting fires throughout the town Lauren's happiness is threatened and she wonders if she will ever find her true home.
BLAZING HOT COWBOY is the second book in Kim Redford's Smokin' Hot Cowboys series. Romance readers will enjoy the sweet romance set in the small Texas town of Wildcat Bluff. Kent is almost too good to be true as both a firefighter and cowboy, who is also extremely handsome and willing to raised the heroine's daughter as his own. His caring nature and easy-going attitude will have readers smitten. Lauren is a strong heroine, and her vulnerabilities will connect her to readers. Her growing confidence as she returns to the familiar world of Wildcat Bluff creates a well-rounded character easy to like. Redford writes humerous and imganitive secondary characters, such as Ruby, Sydney, and Hedy, and readers will enjoy the complex nature of the town's residents.
BLAZING HOT COWBOY takes place in a well-described country town, and readers will be able to imagine themselves in Kent's farmhouse or on Lover's Leap right along with the characters. The town's history was mentioned a few too many times for my liking, but I appreciate that the town's history speaks to the characters. The plot twist with the fires in Wildcat Bluff and Sure-Shot gives the story some excitement and mystery, and readers will be surprised when the outcome is finally revealed. The romance is steamy and tension filled, and there is no question that Kent and Lauren belong together. BLAZING HOT COWBOY by Kim Redford is a sweet, easy, and enjoyable read that many romance readers will enjoy.
