Porath is an expert in the consequences of incivility, especially as it pertains to the workplace, and she has extensively researched methods for cultivating positive environments as a means to combat and discourage incivility. She has shared her findings as a consultant to Google, as well as to such notable organizations as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Justice, and the National Security Agency. Porath’s books are also on the topic of civility. She is the coauthor of The Cost of Bad Behavior and the author of Mastering Civility: A Manifesto for the Workplace. In the latter book, Porath explains how incivility in the workplace undermines employee productivity and retention, leading to higher operational costs and higher training costs for companies. From there, Porath addresses the ways in which companies and organizations can foster and cultivate positive work environments that are equally beneficial to both staff and management. Porath additionally explains how seemingly innocuous behaviors can be uncivil, and she offers tips for replacing those behaviors in a more positive way. The author draws on her extensive research, and she also supplements her findings with discussions regarding the neuroscience behind civil interaction. Anecdotes regarding management are included as well, and Porath thus addresses how institutional change and personal change can work together to result in positive outcomes. The book also includes a list of additional resources, coupled with chapter-by-chapter summaries and helpful tips. Praising Mastering Civility in Library Journal, Jane Scott advised that it “will appeal to business, management, and organizational psychology students as well as general readers.”

Porath (management, Georgetown Univ.; coauthor, The Cost of Bad Behavior) has devoted her professional life to studying the cost of incivility
in our workplaces and identifying the ways in which we can build positive work cultures that are good for people and good for businesses. In this
book, she documents the costs of incivility for the individual and the company by focusing on what such behavior looks like, the actions that
create both it and its counterpart, and the tools for thriving when confronted with incivility. Filled with examples from her research and consulting
work as well as illustrations from the fields of management and neuroscience, Porath's manifesto invites readers to implement personal and
institutional change. Key point summaries at the end of chapters, tools for becoming your best civil-self, and extensive resources are valuable
additions. VERDICT Highly recommended. Porath's work will appeal to business, management, and organizational psychology students as well
as general readers.--Jane Scott, Clark Lib., Univ. of Portland, OR
