Born June 25, 1936, David Muench is a landscape and nature photographer who photographs American western landscapes and National Parks and is known as the “Ansel Adams of color photography.” Muench has contributed to more than seventy books, and his work has appeared in numerous magazines, posters, and private collections. He has worked as a freelance photographer since the 1950s and was once commissioned to photograph thirty-three large murals on the Lewis and Clark Expedition for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, producing 350 smaller photographs to accompany the murals.
As a child, Muench hiked in the Sierra Nevada with his photographer father and writer mother. In a Pasatiempo article by Paul Weideman, Muench said: “Anything in the wilderness is very exciting to me. … When you look at my photographs, I want you to see the wildness—not just glamorous contrast, light and shade, but to actually feel and sense a place.”
In 1984, Muench published Santa Barbara with writer David Temple. The book features photographs from in and around Muench’s hometown, with places like Big Sur and the rocky coastline highlighting “the lush splendor of the surrounding landscape,” according to Catherine Calhoun in Modern Photography. Calhoun added that the reproduction quality is sometimes lacking, but the pictorial prettiness makes up for it. The photos are accompanied by short paragraphs describing the origin and significance of each subject.
Also in 1984, Muench published Nature’s America, with text by Patrick O’Dowd. Celebrating the American landscape, Muench “concentrates exclusively on vistas unmarred and unscarred by human interference,” according to a reviewer in Modern Photography, who asserted that he embraces conservative notions of what is considered “scenic” in America. The reviewer described Muench’s photographs’ golden tones and crisp detail, presented in sweeping compositions that catch the viewer’s attention.
Muench’s 1991 volume New Mexico II: Photography is a sequel to his first New Mexico book, published in 1974. This new collection features wild rivers, pristine wilderness, exotic desert beauty, canyons, the Shiprock formation, sandhill cranes, snow geese, cacti, yucca (the state flower), and Indian ruins. Muench captures this enchanting state’s history, natural beauty, and deep cultural roots. A reviewer in PSA Journal commented on the dramatic colors, Rocky Mountains, softness of the desert, and ancient Indian culture, saying that Muench “is drawn irresistibly to this variety of images and, in turn, gives to the reader a powerful and intimate appreciation of New Mexico.”
In 2001, Muench photographed some of the most beautiful and spiritual landscapes in America for Sacred Lands of Indian America, written by Jake Page and Charles E. Little. A collaboration of Natives and non-Natives, the book features vivid photographs of twenty-five sacred places, including rock art in New Mexico used for spiritual purposes for 3,000 years and a recently rediscovered shaman’s cave in the Mojave Desert. Accompanying the pictures are short essays by poets and scholars, along with “text explaining the area’s history and religious significance,” noted Tim Markus in Library Journal. The authors and collaborators add information on legal hurdles involved in protecting these sites and call for assistance from the public.
In 2015, Muench published photographs in Monument Valley: Navajo Nation Natural Wonder, written by Anne Markward. Muench centers his camera on Monument Valley Tribal Park and its beautiful weather-carved rock, wind-driven sand, massive buttes painted with dark desert varnish, and hardy plants clinging to the earth. Photographed at dawn and sunset, the vibrant colors show silhouettes of dark-looming monuments and millions of years of contrasting land layers of ancient sands.
Muench provided the photographs for the 2016 volume Wild America: A Personal Celebration of the National Parks, with text by Roly Smith, a respected outdoor writer. Chapters focus on eighteen national parks and three protected areas–Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, and Mount Hood Wilderness. Featuring stunning photographs of twenty-one wilderness sites from Acadia in Maine to Zion in Utah, the book’s publication coincides with the centennial of the Organic Act of 1916, the federal law that established the U.S. National Park Service, the world’s first park service. Text explains when each park was established and provides notable facts, such as the heights of peaks and historical anecdotes. There is also recognition for the Civilian Conservation Corps.
According to a contributor to Publishers Weekly, Smith’s text leaves something to be desired, but Muench’s photos will encourage tourists to find their favorite park. Calling the book “a rather fine coffee table tome,” Footless Crow Web site reviewer John Appleby observed that Smith’s writing is “rather touristy and tame. Lacking the investigative spirit of ‘Cactus Ed’ [writer Edward Abbey].” Appleby added: “Without this spirit of adventure, the book lacks the excitement that a seasoned backpacker like say Chris Townsend would have brought to life. That being said … I’m sure [the book] will stimulate interest in areas unfamiliar to the reader. The photographs are never less than exquisite.”

My biography begins in the Sierras, a child on pack trips with my parents, my photographer father, my writer mother. It begins in my first views of the wild places that became the subject for my own photography, but more than that, the places that have offered me a lifetime of solace, of adventure, of joy.
Our childhoods set our paths. Finding in them the directions we wish to go, the paths lead us deeper and deeper into our lives. I was lucky. I watched my father do the work that led me into my own work. I helped him in that work . . . as a young child as his model, as a teenager, printing his black and white photographs.
I made my first photographs as a teenager in the late 1950s, and had my first photographs published as front and back covers of Arizona Highways when Raymond Carlson was editor, and I was still in high school. There was never any question of my career. My education in photography and in art — both at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and the Los Angeles Art Center School of Design — provided me with the formality of a degree in photography, and an understanding of the technology of the time, but I felt — and continue to feel — that my most profound learning experiences were in the field. Even now, as the technology of photography explodes in directions undreamed of in my early days, and as I continue to learn, to expand in new directions, it is nature that remains my teacher.
Although my work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, including Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Center for Creative Photography, Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff , what is most enduring are the more than 50 exhibit format books I’ve published. The books allow me to share in depth the subjects — the landscapes — that inspire me. Two of these (and a number of articles) have been done with my wife, the writer Ruth Rudner.
I am among the archived photographers at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson, short-listed for this honor by Ansel Adams, founder, with John Schaefer, of the CCP.
As a two-time Canon Explorer of Light, I worked with the Canon Systems cameras that were the mainstay of my 35mm work. Participation in a UNESCO/Panasonic sponsored project to photograph World Heritage Sites propelled me into learning to photograph with digital cameras. I revel in the freedom these cameras bring. But, for me, photography — with any kind of camera — is a matter of seeing.
Perhaps, for me, all of life is that. Which makes my biography quite simple. I photograph as I see. I see what is wild. I care that my photography speak for the wild beauty I treasure. I care that my children, Zandria and Marc, both photographers, continue that legacy.
Do biographies have a beginning and an end? Or do they simply have a continuing mission in the work one does . . . . for me, the journey continues . . . .

Dwight Pitcaithley: History boy
In grade school, some kids already know what they want to do when they grow up. Dwight T. Pitcaithley was not one of those. “I grew up in Carlsbad, and I was a terrible student, but I was pretty good at music,” he told Pasatiempo recently. Pitcaithley would go on to a 30-year career with the National Park Service, retiring from NPS in 2005 after serving as chief historian for 10 years. > READ STORY

Paul Weideman
For more than six decades, David Muench has focused his cameras on awesome American landscapes. A high percentage of his best-known photographs were made in the national parks. “For some reason I’ve gravitated to them, including national parks in other countries,” Muench said in a recent interview. “It’s the greatest idea we’ve given the world.”
Muench’s photographs have filled the pages of more than 50 books, the most recent being Wild America: A Personal Celebration of the National Parks (Interlink Publishing), which came out in February. Its publication marks the centenary of the Organic Act of 1916, the federal law that established the world’s first national park service.
Thirty-six framed photos by Muench are featured in Timeless Moments, an exhibition at Christopher Webster Enterprises on the Santa Fe Plaza. Among the national parks represented are Canyonlands, Joshua Tree, Haleakalā, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, Shenandoah, and Glacier Lake.
Muench is the son of a landscape photographer who contributed to Arizona Highways magazine for half a century, and David had his own first cover photo at age eighteen. He started out in commercial work, but at a certain point he decided to focus on the photography of America’s wild places. “Anything in the wilderness is very exciting to me,” he told Arizona Highways for its December 2015 issue, which is devoted to his work — the first time the magazine has ever focused on one person. “When you look at my photographs, I want you to see the wildness — not just glamorous contrast, light and shade, but to actually feel and sense a place.”
He told Pasatiempo that he began witnessing landscapes going on excursions with his parents to parks like Kings Canyon and Sequoia. “That got me started early, and I’ve done a lot of work in Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains. I haven’t done quite so much in Acadia, but I love the North Cascades and Mt. Rainier; I think my favorite is Big Bend.”
Muench shifted from black-and-white photography in the 1970s because the market was pretty saturated with the well-known work of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. A decade or so later, he reluctantly switched from film to digital work. And lately he often forsakes the big tripod-mounted cameras for a compact Panasonic Lumix. “It’s more spontaneous work, and that’s really exciting; it’s really fun,” said Muench, who turned eighty in June.
“I’ve been criticized for carrying a Lumix, but it keeps me moving. I can see what people are doing quickly and also record things quickly. I get to good spots, and I’ve been very lucky about sensing the time of year, the time of day. You know, you get up at 4 a.m., and it’s a great feeling; then you go out again in the evening. That light just pays off.”
In mid-August, the Corrales resident was just back from leading a workshop on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula. Later in September, he leaves for Mongolia, where he serves as an instructor for a workshop sponsored by Arizona Highways. In the meantime, he’s working on a Grand Canyon book that will include some of his earliest film images, and he’s forming an LLC with art- and real-estate dealer Chris Webster to help market his prints. “I have the name, and I have the work, but I really need some promotions. And I’m also from a past era. I’m supposed to be outta here, but I’m still around, and I think he can help me.”
Muench looks forward to finding the time to revisit Big Bend National Park and other places where he still loves tramping around looking for special scenes to photograph. “As long as I can keep it moving,” he said, laughing. “I just have to be careful clambering around on rocks.”
David Muench is a leading landscape photographer who has spent the last 50 years photographing America's National Parks and other wilderness areas. He is the primary photographer of over 50 books and his work appears in many magazines, posters and private collections.
He has travelled widely and has published stunning images from many continents, but the National Parks occupy a special place in his work and many have extensive portfolios on his website.

Landscape photographer Muench (Monument Valley) and travel writer Smith honor the centennial of America's National Parks by sharing a personal selection of photos and experiences from 17 national parks and four protected areas. The included parks, organized alphabetically from Acadia in Maine to Zion in Utah, are mostly located in the West, their natural and monstrous beauty easily captured in Muench's colorful landscape photos. The most notable photos feature mountains reflected in waters, including Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, Kearsarge Pinnacles, and El Capitan. The text notes when each park was established and includes heights of peaks and historical tidbits, but Smith's descriptions are riddled with cliches ("died and gone to heaven," "awe-inspiring sight"). Fortunately he includes quotes from more eloquent writers such as John Muir, Frank Lloyd Wright, Edward Abbey, and Rudyard Kipling. Smith also pays deserved homage to the Civilian Conservation Corps. More than Smith's narration, Muench's photos will seductively encourage tourists to "find your park." Color photos. (Aug.)

Edited by prolific author Page (Mythology of Native North America), this unique collaboration between Natives and non-Natives is intended to draw attention to several threatened sites considered sacred to Native Americans. Loosely organized by the affected tribe(s), entries on the 18 sites include a locator map, spectacular color photos by nature photographer Muench (Plateau Light), and text explaining the area's history and religious significance. Also included are short essays by such contributors as Laguna-Sioux poet Paula Gunn Allen, Cherokee-Osage legal scholar Rennard Strickland, and James Park Morton, former dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. A postscript lists some of the legal hurdles involved in protecting these sites and advice for readers who wish to help, and an annotated bibliography and list a of concerned organizations round out this beautiful call to arms. Recommended for public and Native American collections.--Tim Markus, Evergreen State Coll. Lib., Olympia, WA

New Mexico II Photos by David Muench, foreword by Frederick Turner. Published by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co., P.O. Box 10306, Portland, OR 97210. 160 pages, 180 color pictures, $37.95.
New Mexico II is Muench's sequel to the first New Mexico book published in 1974 which enjoyed phenomenal success for more than 16 years. This latest collection of photographs has been carefully accumulated throughout the past three years. All of the images in New Mexico II are new, dynamic, and so true to the spectacular beauty of the state.
Foreword author, Frederick Turner states "Surely, one of the primary functions of art is to do this reminding of what is, and must be, enduring-whether it be in the form of a petroglyph or photograph. And though the American West lies under the threat of changes greater than those that have already transpired, there is still the great and heart-breakingly beautiful land, still the human pulse to create something in celebration of it, for the human to say not only, 'I was there,' but also, and more significantly, 'I was here.'"
Muench has photographed books on Colorado, The Rockies, Utah and Arizona, yet he consistently returns to New Mexico. Muench simply loves this state. The dramatic colors, the Rocky Mountains which meander with rugged authority, the spring softness of the desert and the winter chill, the ancient Indian culture and the Spanish imprint. He is drawn irresistibly to this variety of images and, in turn, gives to the reader a powerful and intimate appreciation of New Mexico.
For the past forty years Muench has been shooting the American landscape with a finesse that has awarded him a national following. His work consistently appears in Life Magazine, Smithsonian, and the New York Times Magazine.

Of the two, Big Sur generally has better quality photographs. Muench concentrates on the dramatic qualities of the rocky coast and the lush splendor of the surrounding landscape. In Santa Barbara, each photograph is accompanied by a short paragraph describing the historical origin and/or significance of the pictured site. What is sometimes lacking in the reproduction quality is made up for in pictorial prettiness. Both books offer a comprehensive, inconsistent picture of the two regions.

NATURE'S AMEICA By David Muench. Text by Patrick O'Dowd. Arpel Graphics, Santa Barbara. 155 pp. Hard cover, $40.
When pollsters announce that neopatriotism's the thing, you can bet that photographers (and book publishers) are not going to be left behind. These two books represent the best of the new crop of celebrations of the American landscape, and it is perhaps symptomatic that they embrace conservative notions of what constitutes the "scenic" in the American scene. This is especially true of Muench's photography, since he concentrates exclusively on vistas unmarred and unscarred by human interference--much in the manner of Ansel Adams, only in color. Relying on golden tones crisp detail and sweeping compsitions to catch our attention, he produces stunning calendar image after calendar image.
Ruetz, a German photographer, is somewhat more inclusive, showing us gleaming cityscapes and tacky Vegas neon along with vast empty deserts broken by distant buttes. Many of these color pictures were taken with a Linhof roll-film panoramic camera, resulting in long, wrap-around images that suggest the sweep of the American scene. (These are printed as three-page foldouts for maximum effect.) But Moon's contention, in his brief introduction, that Ruetz is following in the footsteps of Roberts Frank's The Americans is overreaching, if not offensive; Ruetz has no critical relation to what he sees, and little apparent narrative intention. His is a paean to a country he loves more than he understands, and on those terms, its beauty functions to affirm the way things are.

Wild America: A personal celebration of the national parks....review
Veteran outdoor journalist Roly Smith and acclaimed photographer David Muench have brought their respective skills to bear on a rather fine coffee table tome, 'Wild America: a personal celebration of the national parks'. Although the work will of course be of interest to US readers, it will probably be equally appreciated here in the UK where most people's knowledge of US national parks begins and ends with Yosemite and Yellowstone.
In fact the US National parks-of which there are now 59 across 27 states-precede our own by almost 80 years. Compared to the relatively recent first UK national park established in The Peak District in 1951, the aforementioned Yellowstone national park spread across Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, was established in 1872.
In 'Wild America' the author's offer a modest 21 of the sum total of US parks based on personal favourites. However, included in this 'Greatest Hits' selection are some real humdingers, including many of which were unfamiliar to myself. The vast majority are as expected, concentrated in West/Mid West of the United States with a high concentration around 'Abbeyland'; the mountains and deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. Only two parks in the East appear. Arcadia in Maine and Shenandoah in Virginia.
With roughly four pages allocated to each national park, Roly Smith's text combines his personal impressions and descriptive notes with historical details and anecdotes. Each section beautifully illustrated by David Muench's sumptuous photographs.
Some fascinating historical facts jump out at times. For example, when the Shenandoah national park in Virginia was created in 1935, the indigenous 'hillbilly farmers' were evicted off the land by the state. The theory being, that national parks had to be empty uninhabited wilderness. Perhaps that would explain the present day survivalist tendencies and paranoia displayed by the redneck constituency!
For the casual observer of national parks stateside,it has always seemed ironic-for me at least-that the land of the free appears to operate quite a rigid, structured and decidedly authoritarian approach to how its parks are used. For example, entrance fees and strict control over wild camping within the confines of the park. Edward Abbey in his essays describes taking a great delight in ignoring 'keep out' signs and tearing down fences in the wilderness areas whenever he had the opportunity! As a former national park employee,he was on record as lamenting the drift towards tourist consumerism and the taming of the wild places of south western America.
That being said, the US's approach to establishing national parks-the latest being the magnificent Black canyon of Gunnison, granted national park status by President Clinton in 1999- shows up the UK's rather timid approach. For example, anyone familiar with north Wales would ask why the boundaries of the Snowdonia park have been so arbitrarily set? Why is most of the wild Hiraethog, The Berwyn mountain range, The Dee Valley, even the Clwydians not included in an extended national park or even set in a new NE Wales national park?
Probably because the farmers and landowners object,as they did when the Cambrian Mountains were proposed as our first national park in the 1930's. But I digress; to get back to Wild America. It's only flaw as far as I'm concerned is the fact that the author is no Ed Ebbey. The approach is rather touristy and tame.Lacking the investigative spirit of ' Cactus Ed' the author contents himself to guided walks and looks on from a safe distance as it were. Without this spirit of adventure, the book lacks the excitement that a seasoned backpacker like say Chris Townsend would have brought to life.
That being said, it's still a lovely little book-just 96 pages- which I'm sure will stimulate interest in areas unfamiliar to the reader. The photographs are never less than exquisite and its a nice little work to dip into for inspiration when the grey skies of Britain threaten to tip you into depression!
Wild America will be published in the UK in April. You can pre-order it from Rucsac Readers
