Maure Ann Metzger specializes in youth leadership and service learning and has experience as an educator, trainer, and speaker. She worked as an educator and school psychologist, primarily with high school youth in alternative and special education settings. Metzger and her students received numerous awards for their leadership program and projects. She is also the author of solution-focused practices listening groups and a sexuality curriculum for the state of Minnesota titled “Everything You Wanted Your Students to Know about Sexuality but Were Afraid to Teach.” Metzger is also the founder of MPower Solutions, through which she provides training, consulting, and leadership advice focusing on positive change for youth. Specific topics addressed include school culture, school programming, project and program development, and professional development. Metzler is also a public speaker on topics such education-system transformation and youth leadership.
In her first book, A Prison Called School: Creating Effective Schools for All Learners, Metzger addresses why many educational institutions and practices in the United States do not meet student needs as students struggle with numerous challenges within the educational system. According to Metzger, these students just do not fit within the standardized model of education in the United States and end up being penalized for not achieving. Metzger writes that penalization of students is unfair and fails to consider the institution’s accountability. Metzger believes that the onus is on the educational system to change and adapt in order to provide opportunities for a broader range of students to succeed within the system.
Metzger points out that many of the students struggling in school have numerous stressors in their lives outside of schools, from economic circumstances to serious family issues. Metzger argues that schools should not be another stressor in their lives. “Instead, it should be a place where students thrive, succeed, and prepare for life beyond school,” Metzger writes in the introduction to A Prison Called School, adding: “It ought to be a place that students look forward to going everyday, not one that feels like prison where they are fighting everyday to survive.”
In addition to drawing from the literature and her own years of experience, Metzger incorporates interviews with high school students that she conducted primarily for her doctoral research. She notes in the book that it was during this period that she became well acquainted with many students’ dissatisfaction with school and their repeated reference to school as a “prison.” Metzger shares many of the students’ stories and experiences, providing examples of how and why they struggled in school. In her own analysis, Metzger makes the case that society discriminates against and disempowers young people, especially by sending them into an educational system that is more like an assembly line than a place of true inquiry and learning.
A Prison Called School is broken up into two parts. The first part contains four chapters focusing on the students and the dilemmas they face in the educational system. “The students’ voices and stories in this book provide critical lessons for us,” Metzger writes in her introduction, adding: “These young people were among the fortunate ones who survived, but who did so largely in spite of, not because of, the system.”
The second part of the book consists of six chapters examining what needs to be done to transform schools. Metzger is highly critical of the current educational system. She has specific complaints against staff and faculty who maintain an outdated environment and curricula that have become disconnected from students and lack the elements needed to make it engaging. Metzger also examines the broader educational environment in high schools that is impersonal and marginalizing. Furthermore, Metzger claims that the entire system is essentially operating for its own continuation and for the careers of those adults who are within the system. As a result, little action has been take even though there is research and literature concerning how best to transform schools so they are more effective in producing happy and productive adults. The book includes resources, a bibliography, and an index. D.L. L. Norland, summed up the review in Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, by stating: “Highly recommended. All readers.”

Maure Ann received her Ed.D. in Leadership from St. Mary’s University, where her research topic was An Appreciative Inquiry of Youth Perspective on Effective Youth Leadership Programming. She received her M.S., School Psychology, and her B.S., Special Education, EMH, from Moorhead State University. She is a member of the American Society of Training and Development. Maure Ann and her students received numerous awards including: Minnesota Outstanding Contribution to Service Learning Award in 2009, Minnesota State Service Learning Practitioner’s Award in 2008, Minnesota Student Service Award for Children of Compassion Project in 2007, Minnesota Student Service Award for Outstanding Service Learning in 2006, and her Leadership students were presented the Governor’s Recognition Award in 2005.

A Prison Called School addresses the many challenges that students who struggle with school face in our school systems. Dr. Maure Ann Metzger shares the compelling voices and stories of students whose experiences and struggles represent those of many other students in schools throughout our nation. Young people are devalued, disempowered and discriminated against in our society. They then enter an educational institution that is based on an assembly-line model meant to serve the masses. Maure Ann was the project manager for one of my projects - selecting budget software. This was the first project at Goodwill Easter Seals that she managed and although she was learning as she went, one would have sworn that she had years of experience. She did a outstanding job in keeping the project moving forward and and despite a very ambitious timeline she was able to meet all deadlines. She brought the project in on budget and had the foresight to put in a "do not exceed" contract for implementation costs which has saved the organization significant money. Maure Ann went above and beyond for this project and was such a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Maure Ann.

Metzger builds this study on multiple sources: interviews with high school students (from her doctoral research and earlier); observations of young adults struggling in schools; literature reviews; and personal experiences in education--as a teacher, psychologist, and youth advocate. Her aim is to raise the visibility of high school students by describing their experiences; pose questions about school effectiveness; suggest changes in schooling; and emphasize the need to value, empower, and engage young adults in educational settings. The four chapters in part 1 describe the struggles, challenges, and attributes of high school students; the six chapters in part 2 discuss the elements, features, and requirements for transforming (versus reforming) schools. Metzger chastises schools--specifically, staff and teachers--for creating and maintaining high school environments and curricula that are sterile, disengaging, marginalizing, outdated, oppressive, disconnected, standardized, impersonal, passive, and devaluing. Metzger suggests that though one can find research and literature that provide the bases to transform schools, the educational system continues to exist for itself and for the adults responsible for educating young adults. In fact, schools ought to exist for the students--for supporting, empowering, engaging, respecting, and trusting them and for fostering inquiry and partnerships using strategies leading to "succeeders," i.e., skilled graduates with dispositions to be active, participatory citizens.
