SIDELIGHTS

Angela Walters is a writer, quilting teacher, and fabric designer. She was taught how to quilt by her husband’s father. Walters teaches quilting classes and travels to give lectures about quilting. She also teaches online quilting classes with Craftsy. Walters has written ten instructional quilting books, which range in topic from books for young quilters to books about free-motion quilting. Walters has quilted for several books, magazines and publications. She is married and has three children.

In The Studio with Angela Walters

Walters’ second published book, In The Studio with Angela Walters provides readers with a how-to guide to machine-quilting design concepts. While most quilters place more importance on the piecing of the quilt top to achieve a desired look, in In The Studio with Angela Walters Walters argues that quilting itself is integral to achieving a desired effect. Walters writes about how to work with the negative space, or the large swathes of solid fabric common in modern quilts, to add detail, contrast, and depth to the final piece. Like hand-quilting, when one begins machine-quilting, it is difficult to be sure that your intentions for a project will come to fruition. The book seeks to encourage quilters to get past this fear and find motivation through the many patterns and ideas provided.

In The Studio with Angela Walters includes ten modern quilt patterns. Each chapter of the book focuses on a design concept and technique that is to be used with each pattern. Walters also includes sample patterns from her earlier work. She provides both quilting projects as well as ideas that quilters can use within the projects to add character and flair.  Walters’ intent is to offer readers techniques to use in quilting negative space to improve the overall design quality of quilt tops. She also includes details of how to sketch a quilt plan in a notebook before beginning a project in order to avoid missteps in the actual machine-quilting. Nanette Donohue in Library Journal wrote: “The style is friendly and pleasant, and Walters’s gentle guidance will help increase quilters’ confidence in their machine-quilting abilities.”

Shape by Shape Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters

Shape by Shape Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters is a book aimed to educate quilters on how to make certain quilting designs, as well as how to experiment with the designs and patterns to add unique variety to their work. The focus of the book is geometric shapes, and how quilters can build on their quilting knowledge to achieve desired looks.

The book includes more than seventy free-motion quilting designs. This includes triangles, squares, circles, hexagons, diamonds, borders and negative space. The design instructions are step-by-step and detailed, and the book includes full-page quilt photos as well as close-up images of the stitched designs. Walters begins each new pattern section with an introduction detailing what the reader can expect in the coming pages. Each section of the book is dedicated to a particular shape or an area of the quilt, such as the borders or negative space. This allows readers to figure out the shape they need to match and choose the design that will work best for their project.

The book is intended to be useful for both beginner and advanced quilters. Walters shares a plethora of quilting tips and techniques, useful for advanced quilters, and her descriptions and instructions are very detailed, appropriate for beginners. The instructions are presented as written steps alongside detailed visuals, that include arrows and numbers.

Shape by Shape Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters also provides insight into Walters’ thought process. As she describes tips and techniques, she discusses her creative process. In doing so she encourages readers to experiment with different designs, patterns, and shapes, offering advice as to how to add variation to each style. Shannon Reed in Quilter’s Review wrote that Walters “makes each design effortless, and the variations help fuel your own creativity, so you can make your own designs.”

Quilt with Tula and Angela

In Quilt with Tula and Angela, Tula Pink and Angela Walters pair up to offer tips from both of their quilting specialities. The book focuses on quilting with an emphasis on using color and shape. Pink is known as an expert in quilt design and is notorious for using colorful fabric lines. She has designed over twenty fabric collections and has her own line of sewing tools. She has written three books on quilting. Walters is considered a master in long-arm quilting, or quilting using a long arm quilting machine, a technique that is faster than traditional home sewing and allows users to work more efficiently on larger projects.

Quilt with Tula and Angela is aimed toward intermediate or advanced quilters, but it also includes more basic instructions for beginners. The book opens with an introduction to the authors, followed by a chapter about how to build a quilt. After the introductory chapters, the rest of the book is divided up into sections named after colors. The chapters are colorful and the instructions are detailed and easy to follow.

Each chapter covers a quilting skill, such as quilting with contrast, quilting waves, and how to quilt using straight lines. These skills are paired with a quilting pattern for readers to work on and test the skills they have just learned. The quilt designs are provided by Pink, while Walters offers tips and suggestions. Beginners can use the skill section of the chapter to understand basic and intermediate skills, while intermediate or experienced quilters can utilize the provided pattern in an actual quilting project.

In addition to detailing skills and patterns, each chapter comes with information on backing, batting and binding, and general fabric needs. The book also includes a resource section, templates and a tutorial on how to make a bias binding. In Library Journal, Nanette Donohue wrote: “Fans of the authors will find inspiration in this guide, which also serves as an excellent introduction to two of modern quilting’s most creative minds.”

    My Biography:

I love all things related to quilting! I started my quilting career over 10 years ago and the side of my husband’s grandpa. He patiently taught me the art of quilting by helping me make my first quilt, a 9 patch quilt that is still on my bed today. I can’t believe how much has changed since that first quilt! I am still a quilter, of course, but now I can add Author, Quilting Teacher, and Fabric Designer to my resume. I am still so amazed by that! I have written several books, including “Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters”, “In the Studio with Angela Walters” and the “Free-motion Quilting Workbook” If there is one thing that I love as much as quilting, it’s talking about quilting. I love to give lectures and teach quilting classes (check out my events page to see if I am coming to a town near you!). I also have classes online with Craftsy with the most recent being “Dot to Dot Quilting”. And, since I don’t think I am quite busy enough, I also design fabric. I have also quilted for several books, magazines and publications, and I feel that I am so fortunate to have the best customers! But, no matter what accomplishments I list on my bio, it pales in comparison to the titles I hold in my personal life: Mother to three adorable children, Wife to my awesome husband for over 13 years, and confirmed coffee addict. And of course, Grandpa’s Girl.

    What to Expect:

I know that your time and attention is valuable and I don’t want to take advantage of that! You can expect the content on my blog to be related to all things quilting. FRIYAY FRIENDS: AN INTERVIEW WITH ANGELA WALTERS

    APRIL 7, 2017

    FriYAYYYYY!

And, y'all, there is no way to introduce this other than: OHMYGOSHANGELAWALTERSISONMYBLOG!!! I wish I could tell you that's the end of my fan girl-ing, but it's not. Why? Because in the Summer of 2015, when I first thought about maybe dipping my toe into quilting, I checked out every.single.book my library had by Angela Walters (which I'm pretty sure was all of the books she'd published up to that point). I traced my fingers over her stitches, I read the little blurb about Grandpa, and I thought, "WOWWWW." That's what led to me piecing My First Quilt, the tan and purple number that's been popping up on my Instagram. I drew out how I wanted to quilt it, even marked parts of the quilt itself with a chalk pencil that I'd dug from my mama's sewing supplies, and stitched in the ditch (poorly) in the center blog, then froze. Only now am I returning to that little quilt and actually stitching it down. I'm using a mix of straight lines and paisleys, and I think maybe Angela would approve of the unlikely combination.
My First Quilt: Pieced 2015, just now being quilted
My First Quilt: Pieced 2015, just now being quilted

Fast forward to QuiltCon 2017. There was only one scheduled thing that I was dead-set on attending: Christa and Angela's book signing of The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting. Christa and I had met online, and I was over the moon to actually hug her and chat. Then, Christa introduced me to Angela and even mentioned that she'd been on my blog. In true fan girl style, I put Angela on the spot and asked her right then for this interview. Bless her, like Christa, she is a very generous and kind human, and she said YES! HUZZAH! The fact that I've been able to be emailing with both Christa and Angela as we prepare for the #MachineQuiltingBlogHop next month-- well, I'm one happy gal!

So, without further ado, the lovely Angela Walters!
Angela and Christa --insert fan girl happiness here--
Angela and Christa --insert fan girl happiness here--

    1) Tell us a little about yourself-- your family, your creative background, your hobbies, etc.

I love all things related to quilting! I started my quilting career over 14 years ago at the side of my husband’s grandpa. He patiently taught me the art of quilting by helping me make my first quilt, a 9 patch quilt that is still on my bed today. I can’t believe how much has changed since that first quilt! I am still a quilter, of course, but now I can add Author, Quilting Teacher, and Quilt Shop Owner to my resume. I am still so amazed by that! I have written several books, including “Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters”, “In the Studio with Angela Walters”, “Free-motion Quilting Workbook” "Get Quilting with Angela and Cloe", "Shape by Shape" "Shape by Shape 2" and I have co-authored several books with friends, including Tula Pink and Christa Watson. If there is one thing that I love as much as quilting, it’s talking about quilting. I love to give lectures and teach quilting classes. I also have classes online with Craftsy with the most recent addition being the Midnight Quilt Show which is so fun! And, since I don’t think I am quite busy enough, I also write patterns. I have also quilted for several books, magazines and publications, and I feel that I am so fortunate to have the best customers! But, no matter what accomplishments I list on my bio, it pales in comparison to the titles I hold in my personal life: Mother to three adorable children, Wife to my awesome husband for over 15 years, and confirmed coffee addict. And of course, Grandpa’s Girl.

    2) My background is in painting, and the best comparison I have for quilting is the it creates the peaks and valleys of brushstrokes. Quilting adds another layer to the quilt. How do you decide what motifs to use, and how do you picture the movement and effect on the whole quilt?

When deciding how I want to quilt, I try to first decide what do I want to stand out on the quilt top. Do I want the pattern, the fabric, or the quilting to show up the most? That helps me choose how I want the quilt to be textured when I finish. For instance, If the pattern is the most striking feature, I try to really play that up by stitching in the ditch around the blocks in order for them to really "pop"! I love to look at the quilt top before I even load it on my machine to really let it marinate for a while before I get started. Taking pictures of the quilt and then using a drawing app on my phone has been a really fun way to audition designs. That way I can see how different designs will affect the movement and overall design without actually starting on the quilt top.

    3) What is your funniest, not-often-told quilting-gone-wrong story?

Oh goodness, when I think of quilting gone wrong...it is almost never funny, even though I love to laugh!! The most recent example was last night when I was teaching a class on needles, tension and thread. I was showing examples of how to work with tension, and accidentally put the bobbin in wrong and it broke the needle on the longarm which caused everyone to jump! The students asked what caused that and when I realized it was user error, it was so embarrassing!!

    4) How has creative community influenced and been important to your work?

There are so many quilters that have influenced my work by their talent and encouragement. People like Karen McTavish and Linda Taylor really inspired me with their great work. The people who take my classes are my greatest source of encouragement. They always leave me feeling so encouraged and inspired!
Do you watch The Midnight Quilt Show on Instagram? You should!!
Do you watch The Midnight Quilt Show on Instagram? You should!!

    5) What advice do you have for other creatives on their journey?

    Enjoy the process!!

Thank you so much, Angela, for taking the time to be on the blog! I think I've made my fan girl status obvious, but I know I'm not the only one. Thank you for being a generous, joyful part of the quilting community!

Y'all can find Angela on Instagram @angelafmq, the source of these gorgeous images, to keep up with her many adventures. You can also find me on Instagram and Facebook @stringandstory. I started my #the100dayproject this week which I'm calling #100daysofstringandstory. Yesterday I posted a video of me quilting some paisleys, and there was a bit of interest in a video showing more breakdown of the design, so I uploaded a video of that to Facebook last night. Please let me know if you enjoy it and if you'd like more little step out videos in the future!

Today's #100daysofstringandstory prompt is "Ode to Quilting." You won't want to miss this, so be sure to follow me on Instagram!

I have sweet friends coming into town tonight, so I'll do a little sewing during nap time, then be back to work in earnest tomorrow night. Have a wonderful weekend, and happy stitching!!

    HollyAnne

Pink, known for her colorful fabric lines and creative quilt designs, and Walters, known for her intricate longarm quilting, join forces in this
rainbow-themed exploration of modern quilting. Each chapter focuses on a different color or color family and features a quilt design by Pink
combined with quilting tips and suggestions from Walters. The patterns are diverse, with bold geometries alongside an ikat-style moth, as well as
a skull quilt pattern that delightfully combines the spooky and whimsical. Each of the samples features the dense, elaborate quilting that is
Walters's specialty, and her designs can be incorporated into blocks of similar shape. VERDICT Fans of the authors will find inspiration in this
guide, which also serves as an excellent introduction to two of modern quilting's most creative minds.

Walters is a professional quilter, and her name often appears in a nine-point cutline following "quilted by" in books authored by designers. Here,
the print is bold, and the quilt designs are hers as well as others'. Her story is delightful. She describes how she went from a quilt ignoramus to an
expert at long-arm machine quilting. She begins with her husband's grandfather, Grandpa Ford, a quilter who helped her make her first quilt and
praised her every effort along the way. She relates her mistakes and the fruits they bore. Her theme: "Even a blind squirrel gets a nut sometimes."
She annotates sample quilts, describing the stitches--wishbone, matchstick, ribbon candy--that she applies as fillers and how she fills negative
space by playing off the quilt design itself. Her bricks shore up Tula Pink's "Gothic Arches." She admits that some of her best work springs from
Pink's piecing, but her own quilts, such as "Cream Wholecloth" and the painted "Legacy," inspire too. Her attitude mimics Grandpa Ford's
encouragement: "I am not sharing my story to tell you how great I am; I am trying to show you how great you can be." Gorgeous full-page photos
show off the texture and stitch of this intricate craft. Color photos. (Oct.)

Walters [In the Studio with Angela Walters) is the go-to machine quilter for some of the best-known names in modern quilting, and for good
reason--she has a knack for matching the design of the quilting with the design of the piecing. Her latest book builds on her earlier work,
demonstrating some of her favorite designs to use in common geometric shapes. Each section focuses on a particular shape (squares, triangles,
circles, diamonds, hexagons) or area of a quilt (negative space, borders), allowing quilters to find the shape they need to match and choose the
design that works best. Each free-motion quilt design includes diagrams that illustrate each step, as well as variations on the basic design. Walters
also shares a variety of tips and tricks for choosing the right design, and for machine quilting in general. VERDICT Walters is a big name in
machine quilting, and her titles go beyond the typical "design catalog" approach, getting into the hows and whys of machine quilting. Beginners
should start with her first book, Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters, which gives a strong grounding in the basics; this new work is most
appropriate for those who know their way around free-motion quilting and are ready to take on new challenges.

In her latest book, free-motion quilting master Walters presents additional designs for free-motion quilting geometric shapes, including squares,
circles, hexagons, and diamonds. As with her first Shape by Shape book, the patterns are organized by the shape of the patchwork, with additional
styles for backgrounds and borders. Step-by-step instructions and diagrams demonstrate the quilting path for each of the designs, and Walters
offers an array of suggested variations, including ideas for adapting the designs to fit within a different shape. VERDICT Walters is a rock star of
the free-motion quilting world, and her instructions take complex-looking quilting designs and create manageable steps that can be completed on
both longarm and home sewing machines. Quilters will be inspired.

For many quilters, the quilting is secondary to the piecing of the quilt top. In her second book, Walters makes a strong argument for the
importance of quilting to make beautiful patchwork shine. The focus of this book is quilting negative space--the large expanses of solid fabric
often used in modern quilting. With a selection of projects as well as samples from her other work, Walters demonstrates a variety of techniques
for quilting negative space to enhance the design of quilt tops. VERDICT Like her first book, the style is friendly and pleasant, and Walters's
gentle guidance will help increase quilters' confidence in their machine-quilting abilities.

Walters thinks machine quilting is more fun than cutting or piecing. She amply proves that quilting is "another layer of art" through careful
instructions in the art of free-motion quilting. Her book is not rule filled: she insists throughout that she's describing what works for her, and she
encourages quilters to experiment to find what works for them. The book flails into three sections. "Getting Started" includes definitions and
supply lists; "The Designs" presents 28 patterns of swirls and circles, squares, lines and vines, and arcs and points. The final section on working
with designs of modern quilts considers designs of squares, zigzags, strips, and off-kilter ("wonky") pieces. Instructions direct quilters step-bystep
in text and graphic illustrations, backed by closeup photographs of the designs quilted by Walters. In the final section of tips (followed by a
helpful glossary), Walters exhorts quilters to answer a question to reveal the most important thing about the quilt at hand: the fabric? the piecing?
the image of a child hugging the coverlet? (June)

Walters (Shape by Shape Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters) is best known for her popular free-motion quilting books, so it's no surprise
that her daughter Cloe has caught the quilting bug. This mother-daughter collaboration is written with preteen and young teen quilters in mind
and features a variety of beginner-friendly projects that will appeal to budding sewists, including a basic T-shirt quilt, a cut-away rug highlighting
free-motion quilting, a school supply roll, and an appliqued pillow. The finished projects presented in the photos are delightfully imperfect, which
will help motivate young quilters who are still building confidence at the sewing machine, and the instructions are comprehensive yet appropriate
for the target audience. VERDICT Reminiscent of Sara Trail's Sew with Sara, this book will appeal to young quilters who are just starting out--
and the grown-ups who are helping them learn.
