SIDELIGHTS
Jennifer Hockenbery Dragseth earned her bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and classics from Bowdoin College. She then went on to complete her master of arts degree in philosophy and doctorate in philosophy, both from Boston University. Dragseth continued her academic career by joining Mount Mary University, where she serves as a professor specializing in philosophy and gender studies. Dragseth’s work particularly focuses on women in the history of philosophy, but she also teaches and writes about ancient philosophy, ethics and political philosophy, the philosophy of gender, late-antique and medieval philosophy, the philosophy of religion, and the philosophy of science. Other research projects that Dragster has conducted center on the work of such notable theologians and philosophers as Augustine, Luther, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Hildegard of Bingen.
Dragseth is a member of the American Philosophical Association, American Academy of Religion, and Lutheran Women in Theology and Religious Studies, and her articles have appeared in such periodicals as Lutheran Forum and the Journal of Lutheran Ethics. She edited The Devil’s Whore: Reason and Philosophy in the Lutheran Tradition in 2011, and then authored Thinking Woman: A Philosophical Approach to the Quandary of Gender four years later. In the latter volume, Dragseth takes on womanhood from a philosophical standpoint. What does it mean to be a woman, she asks. Beginning with philosophies surrounding the subjects of sex and gender, Dragseth then profiles several woman philosophers and their work. Biographies of each philosopher are provided, as are historical contexts, and an analysis of each philosopher’s writings. Ultimately, the author finds that women philosophers have addressed the issues of gender through several lenses, including fluidity, neutrality, gender essentialism, and existentialism. In this manner, the book spans issues of philosophy, the history of philosophy, women’s studies, and gender studies. Praising Thinking Woman in Choice, L.L. Lovern announced that it is “an interesting read for students and scholars of philosophy” as well as “to those outside philosophy.”

"I feel blessed to be at an institution where I can teach a wide variety of philosophical subjects from the Ancients to the Post-moderns constantly stretching my own thinking and understanding. I am especially lucky to teach a bright and interesting diverse group of women in small classes at a faith-based university that believes that philosophy is a core part of educating the whole person."

Dragseth (philosophy, Mount Mary Univ.) is interested in the question of what it is to be a woman, and she takes seriously the philosophical
questions surrounding sex and gender. In this comprehensive, introductory treatment, she examines the lives of women philosophers and their
works. The author first provides biographies of the philosophers, by way of context, and looks at them--and the philosophical questions
surrounding gender--in sections devoted to gender essentialism, neutrality, existentialism, and fluidity. The book will be an interesting read for
students and scholars of philosophy, but it will also be useful to those outside philosophy, for example readers interested in gender and women's
studies. Summing Up: ** Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty.--L. L. Lovern, Valdosta State University
